Recording under different aliases, the Burrell Brothers were the backbone of Nu Groove Records. This New York label started in 1887 and took inspiration from Trax Records, both musically and aesthetically. This compilation compiles the absolute best of the Burrell's output and in doing so it gives a valuable insight to the much overlooked roots of New York house music. It is now close to 25 years ago that Nu Groove Records started operating from New York City, in which its house scene was starting to blossom at that time. In the four years the label existed, 1988 till 1992, it released over 100 records. Nu Groove started by releasing records by Rheji and Ronald Burrell and continued to do so until the label folded. The brothers were scouted by the label's a&r after they had recorded a ton of material for EMI America that never came out. The album that did came out flopped commercially. The deal with EMI was discontinued and the pair started to release stuff through Nu Groove. The label famously went on to put out early releases from other artists such as Bobby Konders, Frankie Bones and Joey Beltram, who went on to have big careers after that. The Burrell's have always stayed under the radar, which has largely to do with the various aliases they used for different projects, such as Aphrodisiac, Equation, Houz' Neegroz, Metro, N.Y. House'n Authority and Tech Trax Inc. This release is a celebration of the work of the Burrell Brothers. The album includes a wide variety of their music under all their various guises. And despite their different guises, all the music they made always had a grainy quality to it, like house music with a sepia tint. In Rheji's words: 'The first House'n Authority was straight to cassette. That's how we'd record our demos and stuff so we didn't want to change what we did because it worked. I liked the fact that house music was crusty. Like an old jazz record, I liked the hiss.' The first LP zooms in on Rhehi's N.Y. House'n Aurthority project. With its raw drum programming and going both in a energetic jacking direction as well as a more deeper reflecting direction, it reminds of early Fingers and Trax Records. Also included here is Ronald's K.A.T.O project which shows a deep and hypnotic side to their music. Another highlight is the much sought after house classic 'I'll Say A Prayer 4U' by Equation. Too much good music to mention, just listen and take it all in.

Jay Shepheard's Retrofit imprint reaches its seventh release with this fine EP of old school sounds with an undeniably modern feel. "Hefty Done Me Right" begins proceedings with a house-disco hybrid sporting a particularly meaty analogue bassline, 80s electro vocal samples and shimmering pop synths, while "The Electric Model" marries a distinctly Kraftwerk-esque motorik vibe with Balearic disco sweeps and horns. On the flip, "One Night In Puzon" opens with a tense rising string line, broken with a crystalline piano mosaic and deep squelching bass. Finally, TW closes proceedings with his own dub take on "Hefty Done Me Right", amping up the electro feel of the original with an MPC cut-up style reworking filled with heavy vocal samples and rolling piano stabs, transplanting the original from its Italian roots to 80s Harlem.

Foot & Mouth kicks of the year with J. Cub's slamming 'Warning' single, hot out of Leeds (home of house) with a superb narcotic infused Lil Mark remix!

'Warning evokes that heady summer of '89 as J. Cub dubs and twists the garage beats and vocal into submission, a sure fire barnstormer, make no mistake! J. Cub then get's deeper and more electronic with his great rendition of 'werds', hooky as hell. One the flip Lil Mark (Classic, Disco 45, Baker St) works his hallucinatory jacking magic, striping 'Warning' down to its rudiments whilst funking its rawness to the bone...

Following a pair of fine releases on Fine Art and Under The Shade, James Johnston delivers another superb EP for No Matter What. "After Everything" is a masterfully created slice of rolling deep house flirting with disco styles, punctuated with snippets of disco guitar licks and dubbed out vocal samples, all held together with a sumptuous chord sequence. The comparatively upbeat tempo rhythm and deep subs of "Lost The House Keys" which follows comes as something of a surprise, and the chopped up piano which causes the track to erupt into a flurry of jacking rhythms only add to the proto-Chi house mood. The rest of the tracks continue with the same kind of upbeat pace, with "Get Back To The Feeling" interlacing a variety of female vocal samples within its 909 rhythms, and "XTC" injecting some serotonin into the EP with its razor sharp synth stabs and snares, whose rhythms recall the deadly precision of Marc Kinchen's early productions.

Needwant call upon on the immaculate production skills of Bonar Bradberry for his second release on the label. Bonar's You Were Away EP is a journey through emotive disco dreams, with remixes from two rising producers Maxxi Soundsystem and Space Ranger.

'You Were Away' is a thought-provoking slice of day dreaming disco. Steady shakes and claps set the pace while sleek synth licks and emotive piano keys build the track into full momentum. Blissfully whispering through the melody is the dreamy vocal sung by Bonar himself, demonstrating his diverse artistic talents. The A-side also includes an instrumental version, that lets the music do the talking.

The Back On Track vinyl collection takes one of the most seminal and classic New York house labels of the late eighties and early nineties and lets the sort after producer Nicholas painstakingly update the sound for 2011. This special edition collection is made of three limited edition heavy weight 180 gram vinyls with printed sleeves. Each four track EP is individually coloured to make the complete set of three; light blue, orange and dark blue. On each EP there are four Nu Groove tracks re-edited by Nicholas that include vinyl only exclusives. The collection reinterprets classic Nu Groove artists including Bas Noir, Roqui and N.Y House'n Authority.

After a smash debut release that had house heads from around the globe taking notice, No Matter What Records is back with a vengeance for their second release.

The constant citation of "Chicago house and Detroit techno" as influences has very nearly reduced both to empty signifiers; such vague and vacuous overuse ignores the distinct aesthetic and conceptual ideals of the actual music. That tendency to play fast and loose with the defining traits of late '80s and early '90 house and techno is one Juan Maclean has studiously avoided in his new side project, Peach Melba. Built on tracks he felt were too "house-y" to be included amongst the more song-oriented singles on a proper The Juan MacLean release, Peach Melba is Maclean's vehicle for releasing a stream of upcoming DJ friendly 12"s. The project's output is decidedly faithful to the blueprint of those aforementioned early productions, emphasizing rolling melodies and big vocal hooks.

Matt Tolfrey certainly knows a dream team when he hears one as Leftroom Limited gets set to deliver the ´Dollsit EP, the debut full release from deep house head Sam Russo with garage/house up-and-comer Huxley featuring a killer remix from Simon Baker.

The collaboration of Huxley and Russo has already produced impressive results with their contribution to the Leftroom 'Summer Soundtrack EP', a record that has garnered huge support from the media and in the clubs. Leftroom Limited now brings their talent to the fore with the duo's first full EP and further reinforces the imprint's capacity for nurturing fresh and distinctive voices in house music.

This hot new Local Talk release from Dirtytwo comes in two versions. The original version clocks in at over 10 min with a Robin S styled bassline, deep chords and thumping beats. There is also a nasty dub remix which got a slightly more techy feel but still keeping the house feeling intact. If you like your house deep, slightly old school and with a nasty bump we're confident you wont be disappointed after blasting this loud!
