As Dub Reggae music becomes a global force, Vibronics & Conscious Sounds present an album that celebrates 50 years of dub music. Dougie Wardrop & Steve Vibronics present an album that takes classic music from each decade of dub, starting with 1970s Jamaica music right up 2010s worldwide dub sounds. The two prominent UK Dub producers will take each decade in turn, as the listener is catapulted across half a century of roots rocking Reggae music. This unique dubwise concept album will feature reworking of classic tunes from 1970s, 1980s, new versions of crucial music from the Conscious Sounds & Vibronics back catalogue from 1990s & 2000s and some brand new future dubs for the 2010s. This is lovely. Brand-new, rambunctious, rootsy, spiritual brass-band music from Lagos, with singing, drums and home-made percussion.
Obadikah is a group of old friends who play together in the Cherubim & Seraphim and Baptist churches of the Ikeja and Isale Eko districts. A couple of them were founder-members of the Eko Brass Band; they've played with pretty much all the key Nigerian reggae artists. The tunes are mostly traditional Yoruban melodies, often sung at bed-time. The songs are mostly original, sung in Yoruba (though Jomido is an Egun song from the Badagry area of Lagos state).

Alogte Oho is the number one Frafra gospel artist from within the explosive music scene of Bolgatanga in Northern Ghana. His international debut was the 2014 single Zota Yinne (Philophon PH45002), which has already become a collectors item. Alogte Oho is, as always, accompanied by his powerful female choir, the Sounds of Joy, comprised of Lizy, Patricia and Florence - all fantastic gospel performers in their own rights. The A-side, Mam Yinne Wa, is pure future gospel: a swinging rhythm with pumping synth bass and playful horns that weave around the eulogising choir of the group. As a highlight, the chasing flute solo of Free Jazz great Sabir Mateen (Cecile Taylor, Sunny Murray, Hamid Drake) catapults you into another dimension! On the B-side, Yu Ya Yumma, the rhythm section is driven by reggae master Josie Coppola on drums and gives a solid foundation for the brilliant performance of the singers. The title means: let's sing a song. And that is exactly what the group is doing.

The latest production of Mr. Alberto D'Ascola aka Puppa Albo aka Alborosie showcases established hit-makers Gentleman (in combination with Clay), Mr. Vegas, Alborosie, Etana, Christopher Martin, Sizzla Kalonji with all new exclusive tunes, alongside young lions like Dann I, Yung J.R., Skygrass, Sandy Smith and Martei Corley, with all great voices and excellent performances. Eleven superb tunes plus Alborosie's instrumental riddim version makes this a standout longplay release! The Apostles were disciples of a heavy kind of psychedelic soul/rock fusion. After The Funkees left for London, they stepped into the breach to become the champions of East Nigeria's flourishing post-war music scene. Based in Aba, and led by guitarist and charismatic chancer Walton Arungwa, they laid down a couple of singles with the city's newly-formed BEN label. EMI liked what they heard and in 1976 whisked the band to Lagos to record The Apostles with the legendary Emmanual Odenusi at the controls. A heavy mix of wailing guitar, swirling organ and James Brown-style vocals, it became a fixture in every east Nigerian home. 'Never Too Late' sets the stage with a scorching lead break that most believe was played by guitar-slinger-for-hire, Felix 'Feladay' Odey. Drummer Joel Madubuike and bass player Henry Tandu lay down the rock solid groove for Benji Davidson's righteous organ lines in 'Inflation' and 'Highway to Success.' And each is invested with an urgency from battle-hardened vocals of Chyke Fussion, a vetran of the Biafra war. Don't be fooled by the angelic white outfits worn on the cover of The Apostles. These guys were BAD. And 'Never Too Late' could well be the best Afro Rock song ever recorded.

By the mid 1970's in Nigeria, the Biafran War was a distant memory and the music scene in the eastern city of Aba was booming again. Bands like The Funkees, The Wings and The Apostles grabbed the headlines, but the more interesting stuff was coming from smaller groups like the Friimen. The Friimen, or the Friimen Muzik Company to use their official name, were influenced as much by pre-Saturday Night Fever Bee Gees as Jimi Hendrix and James Brown. In Beni Tudumey they had the best keyboardist in the city, and in Dan Igbaji, Charlie Eze and Ken Okogbue its tightest rhythm section. Throw in Gbemi Saka Toju channeling his inner Barry Gibb and you had a band quite unlike any other in the country. The result is We Can Get it On, a hybrid of West Coast ballads and dancefloor chuggers. One moment they are thanking God for making the mountains ('The Creator'), the next salaciously suggesting it's time to make the mountains move ('We Can Get It On'). Some of the songs simply state the obvious ('Music Makes You Move'.) However, it's the track, 'Salt Sweet Style', that sums up the Friimen best: We have the salt. We have the sweet. We have the style.' It's all present and accounted for on We Can Get It On.

Two rugged cuts of the 'Love and Broad Highway' piece from Mike Brooks and the Roots Radics, on Brooks' Harvest label. Love and Broad Highway first surfaced in the early 1980s and has never been re-pressed since. Comes with two cuts of Mike Brooks 'Long Long Time on the flip side.Long Long Time was released in the UK on Hitrun and again has never been re-pressed until now. Recorded in Jamaica and released in the UK without Mikey's knowledge. All remastered direct from master tape. Mikey is backed by the Roots Radics band, in their prime at the time of recording. Tough, sticky roots. Comes in a custom bag.

After two sold out 12" EPs on Optimo Trax, Boot & Tax head over to mother label Optimo Music for the release of their debut self-titled, 9-track album.

The Milanese duo are comprised of Cristian Croce (already part of The Barking Dogs) and Claudio Brioschi (Brioski), two of the most popular and respected djs/producers of the Italian scene who share a great passion for analog synths and experimentation, and a deep knowledge of both clubbing and production.

Dance albums are notoriously difficult to pull off and often fall flat but Boot & tax succeed where many fail by making a record that will work on open-minded dance floors but isn't necessarily a dance album. Indeed, my 80-year-old stepmother hasn't danced for years but has been listening to this on repeat all month. Incorporating Claudio's guitar playing, Boot & Tax's trademark eccentric instrumentation along with their analogue arsenal and the occasional vocal from Cristian, they have managed to forge a uniquely characteristic sound world.

Playful, psychedelic, hypnotic, captivating, the album comes in a gatefold sleeve on double vinyl and Boot & Tax will be touring live in support of the record throughout the summer and beyond.

Placed within legendary reggae producer Lee Scratch' Perry's prolific discography, The Upsetters Chapter 1 stands out as one of the eccentric genius's most interesting, adventurous works. Using a combination of established collaborators and new musicians, Perry creates a classic dub record that pulses with deep bass, echoing percussion and dissonant sound effects. Spiritual cuts ( When Jah Come') are balanced by grand dub productions ( Tighten Up'), creating a cohesive, infectious sound that rivals the Upsetter's finest material.
