Komodo Kolektif - Sundada

Komodo Kolektif

Sundada

12inchINVINC22LP
Invisible, Inc.
28.05.2019

At long last Komodo Kolektif have brought us the long-awaited follow-up to their outstanding 2017 EP “Sumantras”.

With “Sundada” we see the group delve even deeper into hypnotic territory with an even stronger focus on their Indonesian gamelan instruments, wall-shaking basslines and trance-inducing percussion. A dual focus on tribal primitivism in parallel with a futuristic vision of the possibilities provided by their vast arsenal of electronic gear and processors, the overall outcome has produced something beyond 'world music' that is positively ritualistic.

Again aided by veteran Seattle-born multi-instrumentalist Jon Keliehor (James Brown, The Doors, Peter Murphy/Bauhaus, The Daily Flash, Emotional Response, Optimo Music) on suling (Indonesian flute) and percussion, Komodo Kolektif seem to have explored even more meditative and profoundly esoteric avenues than they did with “Sumantras”.

Much of the material is a refinement and distillation of what has been featured in their live shows for almost a year and a half and which has been met with rapturous applause at the likes of Convenanza festival in France to Sonic Cathedral & Ulrich Schnauss' Ambience Chasers in London.

Other pieces are the result of improvisations; experimenting with the Indonesian sarons, gendèrs and kempul at their disposal (courtesy of Gamelan Naga Mas of which two of the group are long term members) to create new patterns that resonate to both eastern and western ears.

Komodo Kolektif have received praise and plays from Hardy Fox (The Residents), JD Twitch (Optimo), Andrew Weatherall, Peter Power (Multi Culti / Voodoohop) and many more.

Pantene was a live performance art-pop group that existed in Berlin, Germany in 2015. Its four core band members; Marijn Degenaar, Molly Dyson, Olle Holmberg, and Rahel Tierbach took a DIY approach to instrumentation and arrangement, where intergenerational low-fidelity samples collide with subversive and pithy lyrics. Using laptops, MIDI, samplers and effects units to deliver re-contextualised pieces of music, Pantene explored issues surrounding cultural constructions of power, identity and sexuality with effortless aplomb.

Algebra Suicide - Still Life

Algebra Suicide was a Chicago poetry-music duo consisting of poet and visual artist Lydia Tomkiw and musician Don Hedeker. They formed in 1982 and self-released a 4-song EP that year. It featured a 60's Vox Guitar Organ, a precursor to the synthesizer guitar, and a Multivox Rhythm Ace drum machine. In 1984 they released their 2nd EP ditching the guitar organ for a Casiotone MT-40. Their debut album ‘Big Skin’ was released in 1986 on cassette and featured 13 new compositions with more complex arrangements. A vinyl compilation album, "The Secret Like Crazy", was released in 1988. It collected 20 tracks picked from ‘Big Skin’ and the first two EPs plus unreleased songs. In 2012 Dark Entries released an 18-track compilation of their first 3 singles with bonus tracks.

‘Still Life’ is a 16 track compilation that collects the 9 remaining songs from ‘Big Skin’, 3 songs from ‘The Secret Like Crazy’, and 4 songs from various compilations. Lydia and Don call their approach "Avant Garage" citing inspiration from Patti Smith, Frank O'Hara, Leonard Cohen and Lou Reed. Don plays guitar in a hauntingly stark style like Glenn Branca, Tom Verlaine, or Vini Reilly. He then adds Casio keyboards and minimal electronic percussion, creating a moody, atmospheric backdrop for Lydia's poems. Lydia's words span a broad range of twisted real-life observations, and are delivered in a deadpan fashion with her distinct Midwestern accent.

All songs have been remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Each LP is housed in a jacket designed by Eloise Leigh and includes a 16-page booklet with lyrics, press clippings and photos. Though Lydia passed away in 2007, her genius lives on in these recordings. Please respect her decadence.

Various - MonoTrax Volume 2

The HACKER/LARRY McCORMICK/COSMIC FORCE/DEFEKT

Hot off the heels of MonoTrax Volume 1, Monotone is not letting up with this vinyl only compilation of what could be considered some of the best Electro has to offer. To prove that things get started by legend The Hacker with this pure Electro outing. This one is a littler slower but still a powerful number that will put you into the groove. The second cut on this plater comes from the Monotone boss himself with Root Code. This is actually one of the hot tracks from his Intelectro album however this has not seen wax until now. This jam picks things up with his patented solid drum patterns while the rhythms build up until the middle breaks off into epic keys that lift the track even higher until the end drop into the bass. Side B starts off with the Dutch hero Cosmic Force. Maximilian of Roma is a hybrid of grooves and textures throughout. The energy on this carries the track throughout. Just the unique composition you expect from the Utrecht ninja! Last but far from least. The Irish man comes with a nice riding flow as DeFeKT shows why he is one of the hottest Electro/Techno artists at the moment. I Am Here is proclaimed as this riding tune is relentless and shows why this record is a diverse group of artists yet the spirit of MonoTrax is even clearer. To bring together top notch Electro producers for an exciting compilation series.

02.08.2019

PAREDO presents new and exclusive works by three female japanese music producers: KOPY, TENTENKO and MIKI YUI who are based in Osaka, Tokyo and Düsseldorf respectively and a radical reinterpretation using elements of the featured works by Lena Willikens, the PAREDO MEGA MIX. All four contributions showcase their highly individual approaches to contemporary electronic dance music. Paredo is directly informed by multi-directional encounters of four musicians and their close observations of musical production and reception in practice.

In 2017 Lena Willikens and TAL founder Stefan Schneider have both, though independently from one another, been invited to Japan under the auspices of the Goethe Institut. While Schneider researched electronic noise music cultures in Osaka, LENA WILLIKENS and her artist partner SARAH SZCZESNY developed aspects of audio mix and filmed footage for their collaborational art project PHANTOM KINO BALLETT while in residency at Villa Kamogawa in Kyoto.

"While in Kyoto, we often went to Osaka or Tokyo to explore the diversity of the music subcultures there. It was fascinating to witness how Japanese underground cultures adopt influences from abroad and turn them into something original and very much their own. We also saw live performances by KOPY and TENTENKO whom we quickly befriended."

KOPY is a consistant part of the vital electronic music scene from Osaka. Besides a few performances at Düsseldorfs famous SALON DES AMATEURS, she has also been invited by LENA WILLIKENS to her showcase at the MEAKUSMA FESTIVAL in 2018.

TENTENKO begun to enter into the japanese music scene with a steady flow of experimental cdr productions as well as collaborations with members of the legendary japanese noise band Hijokaidan.

MIKI YUI originally from Tokyo has lived in Düsseldorf for more than two decades now. Besides albums of her solo work for LINE (US), or more recently, for Cusp Editions (UK) she also collaborates with Carl Stone in the duo REALISTIC MONK (on the Meakusma label) and was a member of Klaus Dingers last band JAPANDORF (Grönland Records).

LENA WILLIKENS who has a background in fine art, first honed her unique approach during a long residency at Düsseldorf’s Salon des Amateurs. Outside of the club, the Cómeme label was home to her first EP, 2015's Phantom Delia. In 2017 she has released a remix of Kenyan singer OGOYA NENGO for the ON MANDE EP, TAL02.

Nicola Ratti - Continental

"Continental" is the new full length solo record by Milan-based multi-instrumentalist Nicola Ratti, following recent releases on Where to Now? and Room40. Conceived of by Ratti as a "series of big rooms or places to get lost in, full of small details and characterized each by a single flavor or perfume" it is a surprising and vibrant collection of music. Working with a palette of spare, expertly deployed percussive synthesis techniques, Ratti's work here is both labyrinthine and concise. These eight tracks are able to evoke spaces real and imagined with startling efficiency and clarity. Sprawling old world libraries, cliff caves inhabited by dripping water and rock doves, an automaton nearly slipping its axis but recovering just in time and finding a new sense of purpose in the process.

Credit 00 - The Cosmic Funk Collection EP

For more than half a decade Alexander Dorn has shaken electronic sounds, stirring shapes and forms as Credit 00 that adhere to few genre tags. His Bordello A Parigi debut is no exception. The alumnus of Uncanny Valley and Ratlife arrives with four tracks under the banner of The Cosmic Funk collection. Drawing on a spectrum of influences, the Leipzig based musician melts reimagined house with broken beats, blends Eastern acid aromatics with jazz abstractions and achieves a sound that is stunningly unique. Within this sonic cocktail you'll also encounter dashes of samples, a peppery head of 90s anthems and a liberal glug of freestyle funk. A one of a kind record from a one of a kind artist.

JAB - Erg Herbe

Jab

Erg Herbe

12inchSHELTER105LP
Shelter Press
22.05.2019

Last year John Also Bennett appeared on three collaborative full length releases – the CV & JAB album Thoughts Of A Dot As It Travels A Surface for Shelter Press in February, a fourth Forma album Semblance for Kranky in July and Outside The Disc, a new album for his Seabat project with Forest Christenson in October. He also appeared on Christina Vantzou’s solo album No. 4 (Kranky) in April. Whilst work continues on these long running collaborations (as well as other projects with artists such as noted Minimalist composer / performer Jon Gibson), 2019 will start for John with his first full-length solo release – Erg Herbe.

JAB says the record was gestated for nearly a decade while he worked out how to fully express his own sound and ideas. He notes that “My personality is all over this music”, elaborating that “the goal is to create nice, strange, and thoughtful music that reflects a genuine inner vision of self. I’ve been recording solo music for a long time without releasing any of it because I’m not able to let anything out that doesn’t satisfy this criteria.” Finally, Erg Herbe began to emerge during 2017 and 2018, recorded alone during spare moments between collaborative projects. JAB uses a mixture of synthetic and organic instruments throughout the album, including modified Aphex Twin DX7 presets played using a just intonation tuning system, eurorack oscillators “tuned according to intuitive structures using intervals of 30 hz,” and a number of flutes including a Chinese “dizi” flute borrowed from his father, noted avant-garde poet and mail-artist John M. Bennett (a contemporary of New York underground poets Richard Kostelanetz and Steve Dalachinsky). Through this unique mixture JAB creates a record which moves outside the conventional. Part New York minimalism, part ambient, part classic electronic yet uniquely JAB.

Primarily recorded at The Schoolhouse, the Brooklyn loft where he lives and works (that will also serve as the site of a launch event for the album this spring), Erg Herbe taps into the rich history of New York loft music, recalling downtown artists like La Monte Young, Phill Niblock and Laurie Spiegel. He also cites Takehisa Kosugi, Dominique Lawalrée, Jon Gibson (who JAB toured with in 2017 & 2018) and Pauline Anna Strom as important influences – “Their music seems to express their personalities so well, at least my perceptions of them. And those personalities are relaxed, inquisitive, friendly and unique – how I strive to be.” If you add his list of inspirations and his past projects, as well as his time spent working behind the scenes with noted NYC imprint RVNG Intl., then it becomes clear how much JAB is working within a very distinctly New York tradition of experimental, classical and electronic music. His various projects with filmmakers and installation artists like Peter Burr also add to this vivid impression of a New York artist out and about, working on many levels at once. The sound of Erg Herbe reflects this cross fertilization of artistic activity.

Beyond the cuts recorded in Brooklyn there’s also “Chanterai por mon coraige” derived from the 13th century French troubadour song by Guiot de Dijon, on which two flute improvisations upon a theme were recorded blind from each other and then combined afterwards, producing some exciting, unexpected harmonies. Appropriately “Chanterai por mon coraige” was recorded inside a decrepit mill in the French countryside at night – not far from where Shelter Press is headquartered. The title cut “Erg Herbe” features flute recorded inside Tilapia, a reverberant sculpture by Katsuhito Nishikawa at the Museum Insel Hombroich in Germany, which was then processed and overlaid with synthesizer in New York.

“Erg Herbe” in an invented turn of phrase – erg being the term for a sea of desert sand dunes, and herbe being French for grass – summoning the dreamlike image of a green, rolling dunescape. A fitting title for an album that combines worlds: minimal and lush, serious and playful, real and imagined. “Distant Patterns” – the longest track on the album at over twelve minutes – juxtaposes dry, pulsating oscillators with pillowy, occasionally dissonant pads, while a raga-like alto flute melody glides and dances over top, like a bird soaring across a landscape. Dreaming of distant places while absorbing what’s around him, and traveling the world while keeping one foot in New York, JAB has finally conjured up the unique, surreal sound world he has been looking for.

Erg Herbe features original artwork by Zin Taylor, who JAB collaborated with previously on Thoughts Of A Dot As It Travels A Surface and is mastered by Rashad Becker at D+M.

Miguel A. Ruiz: - Climatery

MiguelA.Ruiz is a veteran experimental/electronic musician from Madrid, Spain that has worked under numerous monikers since the early 80s as Técnica Material, Orfeón Gargarín, Codachrom, Dekatron II, Michel Des Airlines,Funeral Souvenir, etc. Some of these projects still active today.

Entering the world of Ruiz is a wonder to the mind and ears, each project yields authentic masterpieces of experimental electronic music. "Climatery" was originally recorded in the summer of 1986 and was published by the Madrid label Proceso Uvegraf and later again by Esplendor's Geométrico label (EGK 017). Its Ethnic Industrial sound of mantric loops and futuristic soundtracks draw similarities to Muslimgauze, O Yuki Conjugate, Cabaret Voltaire, and the avantgarde world rhythms of John Hassell.

"Six long environmental themes with ethnic and exotic touches, within a repetitive minimalism and layers of Korg Polysix synthesizer, combined with loops created with a sampler. Sequenced tribal rhythms, leathery and dragging, remind us of the origins of Techno and Industrial music. To the mix we only need to add the connective tissue of experimentation and the avant-garde, which make each theme acquire its own distinctive body" - La muerta tenía un blog

This is the first time this record is released on vinyl. Remastered by Miguel A.Ruiz and Sountess studio. Limited edition of 300 copies.

Depeche Mode - Black Celebration 5 LP Boxset

Sony Music Entertainment's Depeche Mode 12" vinyl singles project
continues with the release of Black Celebration | The 12" Singles and
Music For The Masses | The 12" Singles on 31st May 2019.
Each of these definitive box sets contains 12" vinyl singles
contemporaneous to either Black Celebration (1986) or Music For The
Masses (1987). Both pivotal releases in the Depeche Mode canon, these
albums advanced the band's musical mission, moving the DM sound from
industrial pop into darker atmospheric emotional territory.
Following its release in 1986, Black Celebration became the group's
then-highest charting album in both the UK and Germany, expanding
their influence across pop culture while inspiring myriad young
musicians to start bands of their own.
The next year, Music For The Masses furthered Depeche Mode's
international mass appeal, breaking open the United States and other
markets with the record-setting Music For The Masses Tour. An
electrifying and historic adventure for band and audiences worldwide,
the tour included Depeche Mode concerts in then-communist East
Berlin, Budapest, and Prague.
Both Black Celebration | The 12" Singles and Music For The Masses |
The 12" Singles extended Depeche Mode's increasingly mind-blowing run
of 12" singles and featured some of the band's most sublime artwork
to date. Each of the albums showcased some of the most enduring
singles in the DM catalog; Black Celebration featured "A Question of
Lust" and "Stripped" while Music For The Masses contained "Never Let
Me Down Again" and "Strangelove" (Depeche Mode's first #1 US Dance
chart hit).

releases from the album plus a 12" vinyl version of the limited
edition "A Question of Lust" cassette release, available for the

JINKU - Vagabond EP (El Buho, Sooma remixes)

The fourth vinyl release from Banana Hill comes from Kenyan producer Jinku, with the deeply personal 'Vagabond' EP. Through sound textures and patterns, the waning lights of a relationship are exemplified through tension, discordant sound layers and African polyrhythms examining the damage caused through infidelity and repercussions faced for one's own actions.

Vagabond's remixes come from El Buho and Sooma, both purveyors of polyrhythmic multicultural music. El Buho's remix of A2 brings his Latin American music rhythms warping and twisting Loa Myst's vocal around accordion stabs and a constantly bouncing bass. Sooma's remix of A1 leans towards her house roots, layering complex polyrhythms, creating a hypnotic groove, majestically tied to a hypnotic tribal call.

Datach’I - Bones

Bones

12inchTIMESIG010
Timesig
30.07.2019

Having broken a decade's silence with 2016's 'System', LA-based electronic musician Joseph Fraioli, a.k.a. Datach’i, returns this summer with his eighth album 'Bones'.
Released on Venetian Snares' Timesig imprint, 'Bones' features 12 tracks of mind expanding electronica, once again recorded on his custom-built Eurorack modular system. Much like its predecessor, 'Bones' manages to make the most of the possibilities modular systems offer, whilst avoiding their many pitfalls that can often turn such music into little more than a dry academic exercise. Indeed 'Bones' is a remarkably intimate album, written and recorded in the time following his father's death, and reflects this intense period of personal change in Joseph's life.

"Creating this music was a therapy of sorts," Joseph recalls. "It was almost like a close friend being there for me, and it's something that I hope others can perhaps utilize in the same way."

The connection to his father is something that is reflected not just in the emotional intensity of 'Bones', but in the actual production itself. "My father and I were very close," he explains. "Whilst he was sick with cancer I bought him a guitar as he wanted to learn how to play, just to have something to do while he was getting treated. After he passed away my mother gave me the guitar to have as a sort of memory of him. I had the idea to record some sounds and music on the guitar and load it onto granular sample players on the modular synth so I could make new music from those sounds as a sort of tribute to my dad. You can hear some of those sounds on a few of the tracks here like 'Arrivals', 'Motion in the Living Room' and 'Undimension'."

The resulting album grapples with the intensity of these emotions. But for all their weight, tracks like 'Saugerties Road', ‘Rockledge 3A’ and ‘Antumalal’ transform that heaviness into something warm and comforting whilst the aforementioned 'Arrivals' or ‘Wand’ ultimately achieve some kind of escape velocity and soar. Even though 'Bones' is about endings and finding closure, it also looks forward to new beginnings.

"It was something very much on my mind throughout recording this album," he relates, "ends being beginnings and beginnings being the end. Cycles of time and how time works, it's all reflected throughout the album right down to how the tracks are ordered."

Ranging from blissful ambience and guileless, starry eyed melodies, to intricate claustrophobic rhythms that forever sound close to collapsing in on themselves before expanding into bold new patterns, 'Bones' is the work of a producer who, twenty years on from his debut, continues to push the boundaries of electronic music.

It was all done on headphones, which was rather a frustrating situation at first but later on it felt like back in the day when I produced my first records in the 1990s. In the end it was inspiring. Ochre - A Midsummer Nice Dream - 15th Anniversary Edition

Lapsus Records proudly presents the third release in its “Perennial” series, dedicated to reissuing
contemporary electronica classics from established artists.

The third release is from Christopher Scott Leary, who over the last two decades has produced a plethora
of material under his pseudonym, Ochre. 2019 marks 15 years since the original release of “A Midsummer
Nice Dream” in 2004; on British label Toytronic, which pushed Leary to the forefront of the experimental
electronic music sphere. To celebrate the releases’ fifteenth anniversary, Lapsus Records will reissue a
special collector’s edition of this IDM classic in the form of a double tri-colour vinyl release, re-mastered by
John McCaig (panicStudios). It will also include a full-colour print of the new artwork, re-designed by
Portland (Oregon) illustrator Nathaniel Reeves, who has worked alongside Ochre for almost a ten years.

This special deluxe reissue entitled “A Midsummer Nice Dream (15th Anniversary Edition)“, features
unreleased material from the same period and includes three bonus tracks on its vinyl version, six on its
digital version, making it a truly unique release. It therefore offers a golden opportunity to rediscover an
album that navigates through several genre domains such as ambient, IDM and experimental electronica in
its purest form, stylistically reminiscent of the likes of Autechre, conveying a sound considerably ahead of its
time. In its entirety “A Midsummer Nice Dream” is undoubtedly one of the most remarkable electronica glitch
albums to be released in the 2000s, when the genre experienced its zenith, largely thanks to the advent of
significant breakthroughs in digital production tools.

Rhythmic Theory - Mechanised Dreaming

Bristol based Rhythmic Theory, known for working the dark and mysterious edges of bass heavy techno and drum & bass, returns to Creme Organization. After his first work for the label in 2017 he now brings a fulsome nine track mini-LP 'Mechanised Dreaming', exploring the dark corners of ambient and synth based intrigue. Previous releases landed on his self-titled imprint and labels like Idle Hands, BRSTL and Blackest Ever Black offshoot A41. Atmospheric sound design is at the fore here, with cinematic soundscapes crafted from broad synth smears and plenty of subtle little motifs. The music paints pictures of a metropolis during the dead of night, or a former industrial factory reduced to a hall of echoes and shadows. There is subtle tension built from sustained chords and plenty of suggestion of weird lifeforms in the icy ticks and scuttling footsteps of thew a-side. Side b is less dark and dank, with slightly brighter synths and wider horizons all explored. This is a truly immersive and emotive listen that always keeps you absorbed.

404 , Malcolm , Vidock - Dreamtown Ethnic Cylinders

Second release for Nantes based Abstrack crew. Three takes on obscure ethnic recordings with an unknown origin! Abstrack comeS up with A batch OF music that sounds like them : spanning all the way from trippy grooves to heady dancefloor material.

An unbelievable anecdote from the 20th century led to these three tracks. Breaky and trippy vibes are played with on the opener : coming in and out of the groove, while the ambient air is sparkled with surprises. Malcolm TURNS up with a rolling acid and drums workout, coming up subtly and bringing hands upwards for sure.
Label man Vidock goes afro, epic and vocal on the last piece. A track to open up the vibe without losing dancefloor intensity. Super emotional and beautiful.

The (true?) story behind the record :

The Traumstatter Phonogramm Archiv is host to one of the world’s largest ethnographic recording collections. It was created in September 1901, when a group of Indian musicians came to Traumstatt, where Blois Schauder, a psychologist at Berlin’s university and Xiu Pu Sonmi, a physicist from China recorded them on an Edison cylinder.
150 000 ethno-musical recordings have joined the collection since then. During the cold war, many cylinders and tapes were safely kept out of danger out of the country and sent to the four corners of the globe.
After the wall came down, the repatriation operations started, and in April of 1990, the Miquelon-based ship “l’Herminie” sailed out, with a large number of recordings on board. Ten days later the ship sinks. The eight crew members were rescued by a Swedish cargo ship and a few floating trunks along with them. The few tapes that didn’t sink aren’t the main concern, and they end up in the posession of a swedish sailor.
After reading this unbelievable story in a collection of anecdotes from the 90’s, an investigative work began, leading us to track down two of the tapes. We digitized them and sent them to several musicians and producers. The difficulty to give them an age or a geographic origin gives us the feeling that they come from an unknown land and time. Dreamtown Ethnic Tapes is intended as a wink to this beautiful story, that started a century ago, in the city of dreams…

We digitized them and sent them to several musicians and producers. The difficulty to give them an age or a geographic origin gives us the feeling that they come from an unknown land and time. DJ Lag & Okzharp - Steam Rooms EP

Dj Lag&Okzharp

Steam Rooms EP

12inchHDB123
Hyperdub
26.07.2019

Durban gqom ambassador DJ Lag and London-based Okzharp combine over four club heavy tracks rooted in their long-term long-distance connection, the EP’s title originating from the Durban nickname for the local clubs where much early gqom-style music was played. Opener ‘Now What’ layers a wooden percussion scraper with a ticking cow bell and chants. Set at a slightly faster pace than most gqom, the track harbours a dark energy at its core generated by a low rumbling background synth and pitch shifting claps.

‘Steam One’ - inspired by DJ Lag’s set at Hyperdub’s club night Ø after he brought the heavy steam room vibe - has a slow and entrancing build up with a subtle melody layering on stabbing syncopated kicks, leading up to awoozy synth breakdown. “We were inspired by that moment in the club when things get hazy and bendy and glowy. It has South Durban via South London DNA, so inevitably there's a heavy kwai-gqom vibe with a grimey funky London twist running through it”. ‘Nyusa’ opens with a grinding acidicbass line overlaid with a metallic and gravelly melody with suppressed chants.

Sharp kicks drive the track leading up to a wobbly synth breakdown and back up synth stabs raising the energy. Finally, ‘Sambe’ pairs menacingstrings with a steel drum melody, displaying characteristics of both funky house and gqom in a subtle meeting of the two styles. ‘Steam Rooms’ is a collection of dancefloor heaters set to make the club sweat, the amalgamation of a London / Durban link up reflecting both producers environments and sound palettes for icey cold gqom tracks with funky house shadings.

Equiknoxx - Eternal Children

On Eternal Children, “forward thinking music group” Equiknoxx, comprising of – (Shanique Marie, Bobby Blackbird, Gavsborg, Kemikal Splash & Time Cow) do something they have never done before: express themselves as a collective.

For the better part of a dancehall decade, producers Gavin “Gavsborg” Blair and Nick “Bobby Blackbird” Deane have created a who’s who list of collaborations including Aidonia, Busy Signal, Masicka, Kabaka Pyramid, Spice, Beenie Man & Missy Elliott; while Jordan “Time Cow” Chung and Gavsborg have scored numerous ‘Album of the Year’ accolades from publications such as FACT, Pitchfork, The FADER, Passion Of The Weiss & Rolling Stone with their Bird Sound Power and Colón Man releases parsed and pieced by Demdike Stare & Jon K for Demdike Stare’s DDS imprint.

Eternal Children however is the result of five (5) creative forces combined to form the group Equiknoxx. Three producer/vocalists (Blair/Chung/Deane) combine with two (2) vocalists: Shanique Marie and Kemikal for a comprehensive family affair. Shanique Marie’s debut EP “Uno” was produced by Gavsborg & Bobby Blackbird while the lyricist Kemikal’s only previous solo foray “Graffiti” was handled exclusively by Chung. Eternal Children represents the synthesis of ideas as the group created the album in typical organic style, recording half of it in a single session at the legendary Anchor studios in Kingston, Jamaica.

The resulting eight track effort is as eclectic as the collective; spanning experimental and classic dancehall, hip hop and even a ballad, all while staying true to the unique sound they have become known for. From abstract sound and astral storytelling from Kemikal and Shanique Marie on the opening track Solomon Is A Cup, the pace jumps several notches on the energetic ode to the borough of Brooklyn. Shanique Marie returns to the dancehall lashing line after line on the Riddim driven Corner and takes the lead once more on a tribute to the city of Manchester (fast becoming a second home to the group). The track also features Swing Ting lyrical heavyweight Fox and was co-produced by the younger brother of Gavsborg: Brent Blair aka Brent Bird.

Side C sees Time Cow on the buttons for Good Sandra complemented by the pen of a witty Kemikal & Gavsborg plus the suave of a cool Shanique Marie. Move Along performed by Shanique Marie & Time Cow is a sub 150bpm belter that was conceptualized somewhere in Eastern Europe prior to an Equiknoxx Live Set. Both tracks are reminiscent of the hard hitting off-kilter rhythms of Bird Sound Power and Colón Man with vocals that could only be delivered by those intimately familiar with the psychedelic offerings. In keeping the family close, longtime Equiknoxx collaborator Alozade makes a feature appearance alongside Kemikal & Gavsborg on the penultimate Grave: a dark assault on the senses. Eternal Children closes with the soothing Rescue Me, a duet with Blackbird and Shanique Marie that occasionally trespasses into a pseudo-pop territory.

Eternal Children represents a new direction for the collective, venturing into parts unknown. They are not totally alone on the journey as several familiar faces were key in the release of the project: Karen Cazabon (Sleeve design), Rub-A-Dub (Distributor), Mothashipp (Mixing) and Nick Sinna (Mastering). The cover art was done by Bobby Blackbird himself. The direction of the entire project would have been an impossible task without the guidance of Balraj Samrai of Swing Ting Records

Repress!

Leaving convention at the door with the industrial ambience of opening track ‘Belief System’, before delivering a collaboration with label boss Mønic in the shape of ‘Loyal to the Unsung’, Jason Luxton’s latest outing as Overlook is no way concerned with conformity — something that should come as no surprise to anyone following an artist who’s always been comfortable walking the fine lines between multiple genres. On the B side, ‘Séance’ brings high-frequency tension over distorted drums, before proceedings conclude with a half-time swagger of ‘Sleight of Hand’.

Konx-om-Pax - Ways Of Seeing

On ‘Ways Of Seeing’ Konx-om-Pax has switched up the mood and hit gold. He has made an album that is filled with joy and sunshine, saturated with the classic feel of Berlin Techno.

Tom Scholefield has moved on from the dark ambient and brittle rave of the first two Konx-om-Pax albums, which were a reflection of his hometown Glasgow's electronic music scenes. After a recent move to Berlin, the textures of Glasgow's musical strains have fused into an accessible and friendly mix of poppy melodic electronica built from a stricter 'less is more' sound pallete, closer in spirit to the music of his adopted city. It is also a record which was made in opposition to recent music he has been hearing, in particular the troubled, dark and noisy experimental music coming out of Berlin. Tom wanted to focus on more joyful qualities, making this a record imbued with warmth and happiness, a panacea to the darkness and disorientation all around in 2019.

Having a social scene full of producers has also influenced the album. The opening track 'LA Melody' came from staying with Ross Birchard (Hudson Mohawke) at his house in LA, hanging out in the glorious sunshine with him and Lunice working on tracks.
"Initially Ross asked me to write some melodies to use in a project he was producing, but I ended up liking it so much I decided to keep the riff. I generally write music alone, but being around other producers gave me a certain excited energy that reminded me of after-parties back in Glasgow where Ross and myself spent our youth together. Spending time in Clark's studio also helped me improve my workflow and sequencing the album by seeing the way he does things". On 'Säule Acid' he collaborates with Silvia Kastel and in 'I’m For Real' the vocals of Glaswegian DJ/producer Nightwave filter around the track.

Antwood - Delphi

Antwood

Delphi

12inchZIQ408
Planet Mu Records
19.07.2019

Tristan Douglas returns to Planet Mu with his third Antwood album, the epic ’Delphi’. Tristan has always used conceptual frameworks to facilitate the writing process and ‘Delphi’ is no exception. This time Tristan worked with his girlfriend Olivia Dreisinger to develop a fictional character: the young lovelorn Delphi. She is represented throughout by a recurring melody, with the album developing the story around her. Deeper than this however, ‘Delphi’ represents the hurdles faced by modern lovers, and those felt personally by Tristan, as the album encompasses a wide range of his emotions. The character ’Delphi’ finds solace in escaping to a place, her namesake, the ancient Greek city. She gets lost in her fantasy, realising it is not as she had idealised. “Olivia and I started making the album cover as soon as I knew what direction ‘Delphi’ was headed in. I took objects that had significance to me at the time of production and physically recreated them as “Delphi world” objects, so that the album’s narrative and each track are represented in the cover photo. If you flip the album over, there is a computer rendering by Paulin Rogues of the two landmarks in the ancient city of Delphi - not quite ancient or modern Delphi, somehow real life but also fantastical.” Delphi is an album where the real and the fantastic combine, where functional club music meets evocative piano miniatures. “I ended up working on ‘Delphi’ for over a year, where it developed and grew in parallel to my own life. It became story-like, and I embraced the story-like quality of it.” Perhaps the story of ‘Delphi’ is the story of our own lives. Special Request - Bedroom Tapes

Bedroom Tapes is comprised solely of lost material from a recently discovered box of cassettes that emerged in the process of a house move. These tracks capture some of Paul Woolford’s most wide-eyed and naïve creative impulses at a tender age.

Seemingly lost forever, some were part of sessions that led to him being signed to now-defunct UK techno imprint Blue Basique. This is the first chapter in this archive and an intimate portrait of the artist at a key stage of his creative development.

The tracks have been carefully mastered with a loving hand by Matt Colton who has been meticulous to retain their idiosyncrasies.

Zillas On Acid - She Takes NRG

Welcome to a new chapter to the LDDLM American branch. Hailing from Philadelphia, city of the founding fathers and new resistance, Thomas Roland and James Weissinger, residents of local church Making Time, have been on our radar for a while now. It’s a pleasure to have them and their personal LSD spreading their gospel through our humble label:
“It’s strange days in Philadelphia: antihistamine dreams, cellar dwellers on the run, wet money plugging up cracked fish tanks. Searching for songs of self-care from the pit *and* the pedestal? Let your pupils roll back in your head, we all need to find our NRG somewhere…”

On remix duty, another beloved duo, Khidja, turn the slow burning SHE TAKES NRG (a personal hit, electroclash stucked in tar) into a stripped down tripped out electro groove; While BAD BATH and DON’T YOU LOOK AT ME (THAT WAY) burn the border between wave and lysergic chug.

Enjoy. Do not respect the dosage.
