Black Vinyl

Requiem for Jazz is a 12-movement suite composed and arranged by Angel Bat Dawid, inspired in part by dialogue from Edward O. Bland’s 1959 film “The Cry of Jazz.”

The original form of the music was premiered at the 2019 edition of the Hyde Park Jazz Festival in Chicago, where Angel conducted a multigenerational fifteen-piece instrumental ensemble (all Black musicians from Chicago’s creative music community) alongside a four- person choir (featuring singers from Black Monument Ensemble), dancers, and visual artists in performance.

Angel mixed and post-produced recordings from the performance – adding interludes, vocals and additional sounds, as well as transcribing a piece from “The Cry of Jazz” film. The final movement of Requiem for Jazz features Marshall Allen and Knoel Scott of the Sun Ra Arkestra. Their contributions were recorded remotely at the historic Arkestral Institute of Sun Ra in Philadelphia in late 2020.

The final Requiem for Jazz work in album form is an immersive 24-track, double LP experience. The physical package is a deluxe, heavyweight gatefold jacket with liner notes by South African writer Nombuso Mathibela, artwork by Damon Locks, and a large fold out poster designed by Jeremiah Chiu, featuring poetry written by Angel Bat Dawid in dedication to all of her collaborators on the project. Additionally, there is a limited Thy Kingdom Come purple color vinyl edition of Requiem for Jazz available for the first pressing only.

Boora & Mr. Robberhood - Soviet Aesthetics Vol.1

Boora & Mr. Robberhood (the latter is one of 3 members of KOVSH), out of Soviet Russia, release their first joint project, Soviet Aesthetics Vol.1. The title derived from the idea of conveying the Soviet art form on vinyl, using only soviet samples and synthesizers to present the new Russian-style, Golden Era 90's-influenced, instru-mental hip hop.

The initial cover concept was slightly different to how it materialised, quite plain and simple; with the traditional Soviet white and black colour scheme and a cover photo taken by Volodya Kurashev, a Soviet sculptor at the exhibition for Eugene Vucetic. The back cover is a picture of the duo 'cooking up heat' in the kitchen.

The duo are set to release volumes 2, 3 and maybe 4 in the future.

ROTCIV / Das Komplex - Magic Silk #1

The Magic Silk EP marks ROTCIVs return to Luv Shack Records - with three fresh original joints, this time alongside brother in arms Das Komplex, who delivers two new originals on the B side.

“It’s the Magic” is an italo infused house track, brimming with dramatic leads, a super tight and intelligent drum sequence, deep harmonies and solid bottom end. While being a lot slower in tempo, “Your Highness” lacks nothing in the power department - a fat rhythm section and a soaring acid line are the spine of this extraordinary cosmic stomper. Lastly, ROTCIV takes us on to a trippy tropical island with the synth heavy shuffler “Moleggio”.

On the flip, we have “Silk” by Das Komplex. Starting off as an EBM track with industrial feel, it gradually evolves into a hypnotic chugger with a sneaky boogie Bassline. The EP closes with “Aurora”, a perfect blend of NY disco attitude, synthesizer weirdness and balearic sleaze.

Ochre - A Midsummer Nice Dream - 15th Anniversary Edition

Lapsus Records proudly presents the third release in its “Perennial” series, dedicated to reissuing
contemporary electronica classics from established artists.

The third release is from Christopher Scott Leary, who over the last two decades has produced a plethora
of material under his pseudonym, Ochre. 2019 marks 15 years since the original release of “A Midsummer
Nice Dream” in 2004; on British label Toytronic, which pushed Leary to the forefront of the experimental
electronic music sphere. To celebrate the releases’ fifteenth anniversary, Lapsus Records will reissue a
special collector’s edition of this IDM classic in the form of a double tri-colour vinyl release, re-mastered by
John McCaig (panicStudios). It will also include a full-colour print of the new artwork, re-designed by
Portland (Oregon) illustrator Nathaniel Reeves, who has worked alongside Ochre for almost a ten years.

This special deluxe reissue entitled “A Midsummer Nice Dream (15th Anniversary Edition)“, features
unreleased material from the same period and includes three bonus tracks on its vinyl version, six on its
digital version, making it a truly unique release. It therefore offers a golden opportunity to rediscover an
album that navigates through several genre domains such as ambient, IDM and experimental electronica in
its purest form, stylistically reminiscent of the likes of Autechre, conveying a sound considerably ahead of its
time. In its entirety “A Midsummer Nice Dream” is undoubtedly one of the most remarkable electronica glitch
albums to be released in the 2000s, when the genre experienced its zenith, largely thanks to the advent of
significant breakthroughs in digital production tools.

Coco Bryce - The Ayakashi Ep

7th Storey Projects is pleased to welcome back the Myor Massiv head honcho for his 3rd release on our label.

Earlier this year, Coco Bryce travelled to Tokyo and Osaka for a small series of gigs. Thoroughly impressed by his experiences there, upon returning home, he immediately took to crafting a slew of jungle and hip hop tracks, heavily influenced by everything he'd seen, heard, felt and tasted in the Land of the Rising Sun.

The ep kicks off with its title track, Ayakashi. Dark, fierce and mysterious like the mythical creatures it was named after, it builds up slowly, utilizing a combination of chopped up Japanese percussion, haunting flutes and Hot Pants breaks, before switching to full on Amen assault mode halfway through the tune.

Shinjuku is one of Tokyo's most well known wards, and also the place where Coco found the records from which the samples were sourced to construct this number: a turntablism beat/scratch album, and a compilation of traditional work songs, this particular one originating from the gold mines of the island of Hokkaido.

On the B1 track, Kaguya, he takes a more gentle approach: sweet, yet melancholic, like the Miyazaki movie of the same name.

The ep is rounded off with Hotaru, which borrows from an entirely different source of inspiration, namely DJ Krush's abstract take on boom bap hip hop. Shards of mid-90s Mo Wax are blended with anime samples, making for a solid two and a half minutes of Golden Era-esque head nodding.
