Shake A Leg 2x12"

Nice Up
23.12.2013

Mr Benn (aka Ben Menter) is a name that has been bubbling away on the Bristol scene for many years, having released a number of records on the local Leisure imprint and running nights around the Stokes Croft area for many moons. Often working with MCs such as Blackout JA and Souls Liberation, his bumping mix of hip hop beats and reggae always struck a chord on the cities dancefloors, although it was his track 'Long Time' with legendary UK rapper Blak Twang that really put him on the map and cemented his hip hop/reggae style in clubs across the world. Remixes of Horace Andy, Cutty Ranks, Monkey Mafia and Joe Driscoll followed, earning him a solid reputation for shaking dancefloors. Reared on a diet of Aswad, The Specials and King Tubby, with 90s hip hop as a backdrop as well as an emergent jungle scene, the musical influences behind his sound are vast and wide, not to mention the eclectic culture that his home town of Bristol exudes. However, his more recent involvement with the Bristol Hifi Soundsystem (alongside Massive Attack's Daddy G) has seen him digging deeper into his reggae roots for this, his debut album. 'Shake A Leg' is truly a labour of love, taking almost 4 years to complete (the title is a tongue in cheek reference to this!) and has seen Ben collaborate with some of his musical heroes such as The Ragga Twins, Tenor Fly And Top Cat - all certified veterans of the UK reggae scene. There are also a number of lesser known talents such as up-and-coming star Eva Lazarus, Canada's MC ZULU, Jamaica's Peppery and Nanci Corriea from the Congo Natty crew, not forgetting Toddla T's main hypeman Serocee, who featured on the lead single from the album 'Rising Star'. Taking in dub, roots, dancehall, bashment, hip hop, house, soca and dubstep - the album really is a true reflection of the UK's ongoing obsession with Jamaican soundsystem culture and music past, present and future. With its eye firmly on the dancefloor it is sure to be the soundtrack to many a festival this summer.

Mumdance & Logos - Genesis Ep

When Mumdance & Logos called their debut collaborative EP "Genesis" of what were they thinking Of birth or rebirth; the beginning of something new for them both for the future Or of the past; of histories and memories they have shared and raved to Perhaps both. Going both forwards and backwards comes naturally to the production duo, as demonstrated by the EP's lead cut "In Reverse PIV." Nominally "just" a VIP of their contribution to Keysound Recordings' 2013 mission statement compilation "This is how we roll," the PIV dares to go in two directions at once: synths and bass heading forwards, vocals and drums in, well, reverse. The result is shocking: with its glowing lava-like synths, cavernous Reese bass, caustic second drop and rhythmic vortices, it's genuinely unclear what exactly "In Reverse PIV" is. Better still, it doesn't just baffle dance floors it also destroys them; simultaneously demanding rhythmic participation and jaw-dropping bewilderment of its audiences. You've probably heard other people say that about big club tracks before: you can bet they didn't have drums running backwards. The rest of the "Genesis EP" is similarly headstrong. "Turrican 2" finds the gap between 909 funk and 8bar grime in a 130bpm context. "Wut It Do (12" mix)" has jungle's rhythmic chaos, dubstep's bass pressure and Baltimore club's nagging vocal infectiousness. Finally "Truth", a collaboration between Mumdance and Mao, brings an emotional end to the "Genesis," like the epic proverbial "one more tune" in a '92 warehouse rave; the crowd sweaty, teary and unified. As the sample intones: "Instruments were designed for people to use... for people to use. It's just a tool, another tool, the way an axe is a tool that can be used to cut wood and build a house... or to slaughter your neighbour. The same thing a synthesizer can be a tool to really hurt people's ears or interfere with their lives, or it can make a really nice sounding instrument that can affect people in a positive way."
Mumdance has high profile releases on Diplo's Mad Decent and No Hats No Hoods amongst others. His "Different Circles" mixtape saw him work with grime MCs Jammer, Trim, Boy Betta Know and garage legends MCs Sparks & Kie, while 2013's "Twists and Turns" mixtape garnered critical acclaim. Logos' career began with a split 12" with Narcossist - now better known as Kowton - and "Medicate" remixed by LV. Also a member of the emerging instrumental grime collective, Boxed, his 2012 Keysound "Kowloon EP" was lauded by Fact Magazine as "year zero" and "the catalyst" for a talented new wave of grime-inspired producers. In addition, the duo have a release inbound on Pinch's flagship Tectonic imprint. Listen: http://snd.sc/17iuxgQ

Secret Boyfriend - This Is Always Where Youve Lived

Blackest Ever Black's last release of 2013 comes from Secret Boyfriend, the solo project of North Carolina's Ryan Martin, who is also one half of Boyzone (not that Boyzone, unfortunately) and founder of the Hot Releases label - a catholic endeavour that has seen him release records from the cream of the contemporary N.C. underground as well as reissuing classic sides by the likes of Maurizio Bianchi, Ghedalia Tazartes and Ashrae Fax. To date, Secret Boyfriend's presence has been felt largely in the shape of live performances and short-run cassette releases (including Carved At Birth, Furnishing The Void and Skin On The Clock), as well as vinyl splits with Russian Tsarlag and Horaflora. This Is Always Where You've Lived is SB's first LP release and unquestionably his most potent, fully realised work to date. Twelve songs from under the floorboards: a heart-rending but hard-edged synthesis of downer folk, tape experiments, noise etudes and basement-mildewed pop for edgeland fuck-ups, loners and wanderers; recommended if you like Peter Jeffries, Flaming Tunes, Storm Bugs, etc. Arguably comes closer than any previous BEB release to articulating the 'mesmerised suburban daydreams of our youth".

Reviews: coming soon

Vice Noisey Italia will cast a review of HOPE EP with a bonus track from Vaghe Stelle(this track is not included in HOPE EP) in free download to support the release.

Vaghe Stelle is Daniele Mana (who is also one third of One Circle). Daniele is a Turin-based producer who could be considered an oddball by his peers. Vocaloid sounds for his bass lines and lead sounds, videos of cyber-wandering in Vatican's Saint-Peter church on Google Streetview, and DJ sets with Justin Timberlake tracks mixed with something that sounds like Cosmic Garage on acid, is just a glimpse of what you should expect from him. From synth-heavy Techno to lo-fi shenani-gans, he has mastered the concept of dream music and pushes it forward like a mad scien- tist. Having released his music on Margot Records, Shabu Recordings, Danse Noire, Astro:Dynamics, Monkeytown Records and Left Blank, and being remixed by established names such as Lukid, Peaking Lights, Nguzunguzu, Samoyed and BNJMN, it is safe to say that we will hear more of Vaghe Stelle's out of reality music, feeding the minds of the masses.

Georgia is a collaboration between Brian Close and Justin Tripp. On their own Georgia Sounds imprint, they have previously released one album, Asemic Club, a collection of sound recordings from the previous 5 years, woven together into a dizzying stew. Like Comment is their latest offering of polyrhythmic and wayward grooves, a stuttering and strutting exploration of edited improvisation and a comfortable confrontation between playful nonsense and deeper meaning. The album slides across a varied palette of sporadic rhythm pulses, ethno-tourist grooves, spiritual murk and 21st Century electronics, looking decidedly forward while nourished by the bounty of the past. In light of the group's extensive work in film and video for artists such as David Byrne, Lee Perry, Julia Holter and many more, the music on Like Comment often feels intended as an environmental accent or cinematic accompaniment, seemingly inspired as much by a location or visual as by other music. As the first full length album released by the Belgian meakusma label, Like Comment is a highly original and sophisticated take on modern club music.

25.11.2013

This is going to be Mixmag dub step single of the month for November courtesy Joe Muggs. Sherwood & Pinch is the ongoing collaboration between Adrian Sherwood, the magisterial dub innovator and owner of the seminal, cutting edge label, On-U Sound, and Pinch, the brains behind the Tectonic label and master of darkly filtered bass science. Since dropping their first single, 'Bring Me Weed' (June 2013), Sherwood and Pinch have continued to devastate the dance floors at events around the world with their deeply psychedelic, bass-driven, futuristic dub wizardry. The second vinyl offering from this hugely
exciting project is an up-tempo, surging, floor- killer entitled 'Music Killer'. It once again showcases the sound clash between these two producers who operate in the outer reaches of dub mastery and it's legacy in contemporary electronic music. 'Music Killer' is the result of the experimental and dynamic approach that the pair have applied to their !erce live performances and serves as a further taster of what is to come in 2014. Released as a strictly limited edition on beautiful green vinyl. Produced by: Sherwood and Pinch, Engineer: Dave McEwen. Artwork by Sam Whiffing.

Various - Light Sounds Dark 2x12"

All is fair in love and war, and with this in mind Light Sounds Dark deliver what is surely their most complex piece of work to date. Simply entitled 'Light Sounds Dark' it is a concept album telling the story, like an ancient persian carpet of a mind shot to pieces due to prolonged chronic alcohol abuse starvation and sleep deprivation. Why

Paranoia /pær'n/ (adjective: paranoid /'pærnd/) is a thought process believed to be heavily influenced by anxiety or fear, often to the point of irrationality and delusion. Paranoid thinking typically includes persecutory beliefs, or beliefs of conspiracy concerning a perceived threat towards oneself. (e.g. "Everyone is out to get me.")
Making false accusations and the general distrust of others also frequently accompany paranoia. For example, an incident most people would view as an accident or coincidence, a paranoid person might believe was intentional.
It is at this precise point that the mind is at its most perceptive, where telepathy is the common language and where a mistimed eyebrow movement could start an intergalactic meltdown. And It is at this moment when the choice of music becomes a live or die situation, something to hold on to, to give light and act as a torch, to guide one through the tunnel as the Demons come from all directions thirsting for their pound of flesh, incandescent with rage that you have dared enter their world of eternal darkness and are trying to get back to tell the tale.. They said no one gets out of here alive.. THEY WERE WRONG. R.I.P Syd Barrett. Long live Light Sounds Dark.

Light Sounds Dark would like to thank the Royal Free hospital (especially the kind night staff), the makers of Diazepam and above all else a certain ECSTASY UNDER DURESS whose incredible musical knowledge proved to be the torch in that long dark tunnel and provide much of the inspiration for the journey back home.

There is music that's made from the outside looking in. The textures are vibrant and the beats bang, but there's a hollow radiance at the core. It's pantomime. Then there's Los Angeles' Alfred Darlington aka Daedelus, who has released a dozen albums in a dozen years straddling countless sub-genres. They're united by his insistence on letting his emotions guide the blueprint.

If you've listened to his music, you understand. There is a balance between the direct and the obtuse that can't be articulated in words. This is part of the subtext for Drown Out, Daedelus' most elegiac album. His debut for Anticon is a heart-on-sleeve meditation devoted to loss, coded language, and the maddening failures of communication. And yet you can still bob your head to it.

"Music can be this ultimate form of poetry—a place to express huge ideas and a whole range of emotion in a few minutes,' Daedelus, says. 'But it can fall short because no one can quite share in the experience as much as you feel yourself. Someone can empathize, but your melancholy ultimately rests in you. Title the songs, name the album, but the music is what speaks in the end." Perfectly imperfect.

There's a sadness that courses through Drown Out. During its gestation, Daedelus grappled with deaths of his grandmother and close friend and collaborator, Austin Peralta, as well the debilitating illness of another close family member forced him to
take a sabbatical from touring. The grief is exorcised not through overwrought builds and releases, but through quiet ripples and agnostic hymnals—a winding and unraveling of nerves.

It can be alternately intense or mellow, melancholy or ebullient, danceable or introspective. Genres ransacked and sublimated include 90s West Coast gangsta rap, rave, classical, jazz, footwork, juke, and the heavy beats that crop up out of the Low End Theory. There are neither speed limits nor straight paths, but there's always a voice and a roadmap.

'I want the sound to be an emotion,' Daedelus says. 'When there's a sample it should relate the subject material. No matter if it's a little obtuse at times; the feelings are so murky.'

You'll hear the sounds of skateboards clattering, the chirps of crickets, even drying eyes. There is secreted fragments of morse code and other musique concrète kicking up dusty grooves. As well seraphic vocals and lively instrumentation. The album feels like a reckless encounter when no one is watching—when you know that you're really alone, awkward on the dance floor. The album feels like wildly encountering a crowded room with reckless dances, with no fear towards their awkward angles.

'Everyone deals with death and departure in their own way. For me, it started to stew and manifest itself in sound. Almost ridiculous to try to express because of how jagged it feels, it's easier to face through music,' Daedelus says. 'There was a longing to express myself louder then the grief. This is the album that I needed to make.'

All the music is made with computers as well as hardware synthesizers and effects.*This is the second album in a 26 release set and contains a diverse selection of styles, some of which you should have heard on the soundtracks of recent U.S. movies like 'Drive' or remake of 'Tron', if not 70's Italian cult crime classics! This is music for dancing too.
*Some have compared it to the music of Squarepusher, Underground Resistance, Drexciya or Aphex Twin or labels such as Warp, Planet Mu & Rephlex - but this is too rough an approximation really. *You'll find soundtrack music in here, futuristic club rinsers, ambience and a clutch of analog workouts,

Lustmord - The Word As Power

Lustmord

The Word As Power

2x12inchBLACKESTLP004
BLACKEST EVER BLACK
10.07.2013

The alias of Welsh-born, California-based Brian Williams, Lustmord first emerged as an associate of SPK in the early '80s, before embarking on a solo career that has yielded such classics as Heresy (1990), The Place Where The Black Stars Hang (1994) and (with Robert Rich) Stalker (1995). Lustmord has also contributed to numerous Hollywood films as music and sound designer, and collaborated with the likes of Clock DVA, Chris & Cosey, Geir Jenssen, The Melvins, Tool, Aaron Turner, Monte Cazazza and Coil's Jhon Balance. Often seen to epitomize 'dark ambient', it would be more accurate to say that his work simply goes deeper, further, than conventional ambient dares, or is able, to go. Half a decade in the making, The Word As Power is his new studio album and an exploration of ritual music without dogma. For the first time in his 33-year career Lustmord places vocals at the centre of his abyssal ambient creations, coaxing incantatory performances out of Aina Skinnes Olsen, Jarboe (ex-Swans), Maynard James Keenan (Tool) and Soriah. Those looking to properly decode the subject matter of the album are advised to study Simon Fowler's fiendishly elaborate, double-spread cover illustration. Suffice it to say here that it concerns "the word" as written - signs, ciphers, symbology, semantics, etymology - and as spoken - myths, mantras, chants, invocation and evocation. Of course it's also about the unwritten, the unspoken; that which exists beyond the reach of language. Sonically, The Word As Power is even more detailed, expansive and consuming than Lustmord's followers have come to expect, with voices, electronics, immense sub-bass, field recordings and other acoustic phenomena harnessed and arranged to stimulate feelings of dread and desolation, certainly, but also escape, renewal and rebirth.

Bone Sqaud - Skal & Bones

BØNE SQUAD. Four pieces of grime, hardcore and bashment channeling the lo fi noise aesthetics of black metal. Created by heavily sampling ambient sections of black metal cassettes and vintage grime records, the result is the sound of the UK underground filtered through the dark forests of Norway.

SKÅL & BØNES sets the tone with brooding drones and shimmering arps over a martial grime riddim littered with gunshots and grit.

Nate Wooley, Hugo Antunes, Giovanni Di Domenico, Daniele Martini, Chris Corsano - Posh Scorch

The third release on Orre is a mini-album recorded live by Nate Wooley (on trumpet and amplifier), Daniele Martini (on tenor sax), Giovanni Di Domenico (on Fender Rhodes and electronics), Hugo Antunes (on double bass) and Chris Corsano (on drums) in Les Ateliers Claus in Brussels on May 27, 2012. This improvisation is essentially a Free Jazz exploration that uses an abstracted, almost classical jazz template. Intuitive and beautiful, the 38 minutes piece builds up to a few more intense parts that touch upon noise and have a very explicit Free Jazz feeling. Quieter parts leave more room for its abstracted influences to flourish and seek direction. The five instrumentalists seem to pull the music open into many different directions at once, quickly regrouping and allowing a natural flow to run through the whole piece. Different instruments converse with each other at different times, others add background atmosphere and texture. All five musicians, at different times and intervals, shape and steer the track into its eclectic and informed form. Like flicking channels late at night, maximizing perception and input, this is big city music that is not afraid of the small nor the overstated. This record comes with a voucher that allows for a download of mp3's as well as a video registration of the whole concert.

Pierre Bastien - Machinations

Pierre Bastien is a musician (releasing since mid 1980's) who works with his own unique, self-built Meccano orchestra. This is far too simply put though, the musicians can be paperclips, insects, model birds, tubes or an old tonear perhaps. One perspective would be that he achieves his music via the construction of machines, or perhaps it's the other way round
*Having a profound love of old jazz and traditional World music, also a professional Bass player, he is noteable for sometimes picking up a trumpet or horn for accompaniment to the 'Mecanium' orchestra. Nowadays, on YouTube, you might find a robotic MIDI controllable guitar that can outplay any human, or a computer that will endlessly compose drum and bass and who knows what the future holds there. But Pierre Bastien has been evolving his own aims/methods/results/conclusions since he was a young boy and you will hear that his album is full of that natural charm, peace and purity; although after decades of exploration and experimentation, the music has achieved considerable sophistication.
*Pierre has already released 2 acclaimed albums with Rephlex; this one is accompanied by a bonus DVD and, although much of the source footage for that is lower resolution, once can get much closer to the full experience and enjoyment of his concerts and installations all over the world. Granparents and Grandkids and all in between will get something from this release. A chance to see and hear the machines in action, up close.
*As usual, all the audio track titles are palindromes, to echo some movements of the instruments.

Terror Danjah & Champion - Sons Of Anarchy Ep

Terror Danjah is an established artist, known for his incredible legacy of grime tracks, and DJ Champion is a younger producer who makes sub-heavy dread funky tracks which are heavily indebted to the sound that Terror helped create and develop. The 'Sons Of Anarchy' EP is the very fine result of their collaboration, featuring one track each by Terror and Champion, and two with them working together. Kicking off with Terror's 'Glide', the track builds up with ambient electronic birdsong, before a rough bassline punches a hole in the atmosphere, modulating and building and dipping in energy. The first of the collaborative tracks is 'Stone Island', which segues together Champion's sub-basslines and tough martial snares with Terror's ear for rhythmic details, fxs and breakdowns. 'Bowser's Castle' is Champion's solo track - a melodic sub-bassline bounces in a space around dancehall-like snares, guaranteed to get you making funny shapes on the dancefloor. 'Explode' is the second collaboration, mixing a ragga vocal, seasick rushing bongos and hard snares, balanced on a dread sub-bass and a daft p-funk riff ... an energetic mutant of a track with a wacky energy.

Bar the occasional remix, and of course the formation of Heterotic with his wife Lara Rix-Martin, who recently released their debut LP 'Love and Devotion', Mike Paradinas' µ-Ziq solo project has been quiet for a while. However, with XTEP, he makes a welcome return from hiatus and gives us a gentle taster for a forthcoming brand new µ-Ziq album due this summer. In stark contrast to a large percentage of his previous work, XTEP is joyous all the way through. The five compositions abandon the furrow-browed quest for cutting-edge exploration exchanging it for an altogether more carefree fun approach, with only the footwork-influenced Monj2 directly referencing any current electronic influences, however even on Monj2, the vintage sound palette dominates. Opening with the gorgeous XT; a smudged piano/moog melody recalls the abandon of 70s pop melodies before the composition falls out into airy arpeggiated funk with splashy drums. Ritm debuts with ravey piano and whistling synths, condensing early dance music tropes into a gauzy bitter-sweet haze. Pulsar is a perfect interpretation / tribute to late 70s electronic cosmic space-disco, gently nudged towards more modern dancefloors with pulsing electronics racing above robust kicks / claps. After the aforementioned Monj2, comes New Bimple which succinctly uses a short space of time, woody, swinging '2-step' drums and downcast piano melody, to bring the EP to a conclusion on a sadder, unresolved note. If one thing unites the approaches here it's a new-found sense of emotion transformed into sound with the skill of a truly seasoned innovator and soldier. Welcome back µ-Ziq!

20.05.2013

May 20th 2013 will see Koreless release his debut solo EP 'Yugen' on Young Turks. Following on from previous releases '4D/MTI' and 'Lost In Tokyo', and his collaboration with Sampha for 'Short Stories', Welsh born producer Koreless has well and truly defined his own sound. Existing somewhere between soulful electronica and Eno-like ambience, the emotion filled soundscapes of Yugen give the listener a glimpse into the vast concepts imagined by Koreless and presented through his music, artwork and performance.
Remarkable in it's restraint, sophisticated despite it's simplicity, and almost entirely beatless, Yugen is a bold statement that deserves to be listened to and lost in.
