Footsie - King Original Vol 2

*Second instalment in the 'King Original' series (First edition awarded 5/5 in Mixmag)
*18 previously unreleased Footsie instrumentals
*Includes tracks vocalled by Dizzee Rascal and Maverick Sabre
With renewed focus on its producers, the Grime scene - now approaching its tenth year - is in rude health. One of the artists leading the instrumental charge is Footsie, a veteran of the Grime and Dubstep scenes whose beats have been the toast of live shows and radio sets for years.
*In March, 'King Original Vol 1' - a compilation of classic unreleased material - saw Footsie claim Mixmag's coveted 'Dubstep Album of the Month' accolade.
*And having gone back...Footsie's ready to go forward.
*'King Original Vol 2' is an exploration of Grime, Bass and Dubstep with swing and bounce at its core.
*Beats used by Platinum-selling artist Dizzee Rascal and Maverick Sabre start proceedings, ensuring levels are set from the off. A couple of classic unreleased Newham General beats - 'Violence' and 'Move To The Beat' - follow, which will undoubtedly please heads on the underground.
*Channeling that raw, uncompromising Newham General energy throughout 'King Original Vol 2', Footsie shows just how adept he is behind the boards, drawing from decades of experience and fusing together forgotten elements of Dub, Jungle and Bassline to create fresh, vibrant sounds.
*On 'Congo' and 'No Matter', Footsie even pays homage to his roots and the Reggae music that first inspired him to become a musician, with deep, chugging basslines and sweet melodies that ooze real depth. It is in this mode that his ear for a great riddim, really shines.
*The key to successful artist volumes is progression, and here, Footsie's development as a producer is self-evident, proving that he, and in a wider context, Grime, will continue to lead the way on the underground, for many years to come.
*RADIO: Support from DJ's Spyro, Score 5, Julie, Plastician, Faze Miyake, N-Type and more on Rinse FM. Support from DJ's Logan Sama and Swerve on KISS FM. Support from Mista Jam on 1xtra. Regional radio across UK as well as Czech Republic, Holland and US also targeted.
*PRINT MEDIA: Review pieces to be featured in Wire, Mixmag, Trap Magazine, Clash and RWD.
*ONLINE / PODCAST: SBTV video specials (exclusive freestyles from MC's over selected King Original tracks)

Vesicle - Inconvenient Truth Ep

comes in marbled red vinyl

Finland's baddest bassmakers make a triumphant return to Dubstep after a quiet year following the release of their critically acclaimed "We Are Lost EP". Recycling und reinterpreting musical styles like it's going out of fashion, Vesicle cause pure crossover mayhem at the highest level with their "Inconvenient Truth EP". The title track "Inconvenient Truth" - a bastard full-vocal Dubstep-Hiphop hybrid - is a collaboration with MC collective The Cyclops from Portland, USA and it mercilessly destroys all in its path with sledgehammer 808 kit work and trademark Vesicle bassline science. Continuing on the Hip Hop tip, cult classic "Cropkets" finally gets its well-deserved release, featuring insane vox-editing and more 808 sounds to delight the old-school crowd. "White Light" is simply one of the best, stripped-down, funk-tinted classic Dungeon tunes around, and "Rebellion" is full-on, smoked-out roots-dub fiyah for the real skankout massive. From their bass laboratory deep in the dark forests of Finland, Vesicle deliver the "Inconvenient Truth EP", yet another catchy, multi-faceted release that remains true to the underground while paying tribute to the roots of Dubstep, Hip Hop, Electro and a host of other musical influences.

Loungin Records
04.06.2013

Under the steer of Jesse Rose, Graeme Sinden and Chris Belsey, Loungin' Recordings's formative years were spent driving the broken-beat sound of postmillennial Notting Hill. With pioneering producers such as Domu and Dave 'Switch' Taylor mainstays on the roster, Loungin' steadily became the label most synonymous with the jazz-derived sub-genre.

Hailing from Rotterdam, C.O.N.E is a principal member of a collective of young producers making what's commonly tagged as 'Bruk-step': a sub-genre of grime that incorporates the percussive structure and production sensibilities of broken-beat. Having delivered two typically resounding remixes for Loungin' in the last 6 months, C.O.N.E now delivers a full artist EP for the West London-based imprint.

As an avid vinyl collector of Loungin's output in the early-2000s, the 4 tracks forming the 'Doppa' EP were purpose-made to reflect the influence Solid Groove's designs had on him in the early-2000s. Already aired on RINSE FM, the EP's weighty title track is supported by 'Pressure' - a more classic cut of percussion-heavy broken house. 'Reach' is deeper inclusion that feature's the vocals of Footsteppa Records affiliate Tink, before 'Ravi' completes the package in a fractured grid of dub-techno.

Kelpe - Fourth: The Golden Age

Fourth: The Golden Age

12inchDRUT002LP
DRUT
03.06.2013

London based electronic marvel Kel McKeown - aka Kelpe - celebrates ten years of sonic boundary pushing with new maxi single, DRUT001/ 'Answered' - out April 15th - and new LP DRUT002/ 'Fourth: The Golden Eagle' - out June 3rd - both on his brand new label DRUT. Setting to work with a selection of analogue synths - Moog, Korg Polysix, Korg MS10 and Doepfer Dark Energy - the Ableton aficionado and purveyor of warped, cut 'n' spliced cliq-hop beats has delivered a handcrafted, 10-track masterpiece of an album which draws upon the strengths of his previous three. It's softer, warmer and more graceful than 2009's 'Cambio Wechsel', with a strong melodic element, and one which will secure his place in the canon of post-IDM greats. Kelpe says of the LP: 'On the whole, I was trying to make the warmest and most analogue sounding thing I've done, and I think it came out best on 'Answered'. The rest of the LP, in a way, is an extended build up to that favourite track on the record, which in itself was an opportunity to take leave of everything preceding it and go off on an epic trip.' Rollicking opener and curveball 'Astrolomy' brings to mind the mesmeric Anatolian guitar of 'After Gold' - a standout track on 'Cambio Wechsel' - swishing its tail to syncopated drum rolls as it dodges electro bolts-out-of-the-blue. It's followed by the lush, soulful, heavenly Baths-esque future pop of 'Beaks of Eagles' - with gloopy synths, hollowed beats and obfuscated crowd chatter - the kind of song that chillwave probably wanted to be, but never quite was. The shoegaze-ready 'Nice Eyes In My Size', with twinkles of xylophone and twisted, subtractive synths aping the guitar's wah-ing licks, is pursued and offset by the squelchy industrial clamour of ensuing track 'Single Stripe', which metamorphoses from techno to dream-pop in one fell swoop, glossed over with fade-out vocals and a denouement of synthetic steel drums.

Atiq & Enk - Fear Of The Unknown 2x12"

Fear Of The Unknown
They are afraid of new ideas
They're loaded with prejudices not based upon anything in reality.
But based on: 'if something is new I reject it immediately because it is frightening to me'
What they do instead is just stay with the familiar You know, to us the most beautiful things in all the universe ...Are the most Mysterious...
Led by heavy wobbly basslines and pulsing synth pads, 'Fear of the Unknown' exhibits a dark yet airy approach to beat-driven electronic music, injecting each song with an unmistakable groove and flow. Striking atmospheric breakdowns facilitate transitions among the infectious beat movements, while subtle glitches and echoing snares accentuate the overall flow of each song. Sometimes brooding, sometimes wondrous, Atiq & EnK's '
'Fear of the Unknown' manages to hold the listener's attention throughout with a steady and cohesive tapestry of expansive beatwork, contorted melodies, and enveloping atmospheres that all seem effortless and natural to these talented new Dutch sound designers. A remarkable and impressive debut, 'Fear of the Unknown' burrows deep into the subconscious and ascends into an unknown inner universe. They proved that electronic music is a never-ending universe of possibilities, but some are just wandering in it and others are experiencing it. Their album 'Fear of Unknown' is the perfect example of it.
Are you afraid of the unknown, or will you embrace it

Baby / Can't You See

12inchHDB072
Hyperdub
27.05.2013

Walton returns with a strictly-limited EP to precede the release of his debut album 'Beyond'. This is a vinyl-only, once it's gone it's gone kind of release, just 300 copies available. 'Baby' is a brilliant and extreme mutation based around an R&B accapella, one that seems energised by R&B's avant-garde but danceable late '90s period. A hiccuping giggle over stuttering rusty engine stabs, and a so-stiff-it's-funky kick and and snare combination, make this a track that works brilliantly on the dance floor by sheer force of ideas and wildness. 'Can't You See's' widescreen ambience is held together by epic swelling chords, punctuated with rolling 8-bit spirals, trap-like bass, and snares. It's held together so tightly, it feels like it's going to 'drop' at any time, but prefers to just tease the listener in a state of excited suspense. Also included is an instrumental version of 'Baby'.

Laurel Halo - Behind The Green Door Ep

Laurel Halo returns with 'Behind The Green Door', a stripped back, rhythmic, and sonically absorbing EP. While re-injecting rhythm as the central focus, Laurel's compositional senses of elevated flow and ambient detail remain intact, harking back to earlier releases like 'Hour Logic' on Hippos In Tanks, and the 'Spring' 12" under the King Felix alias. However, the rugged, minimal grooves on display point to a new direction and shift in sound; these four tracks are hardware-only affairs developed from her live set, built from a kit focused on dancefloor-ready rhythms, enveloping bass, psychedelic detail and lush harmony. On 'Behind The Green Door', Detroit Techno influence from her Michigan upbringing shines in tandem with stylistic nods towards contemporary UK club music; at times cold, lush, sinister and elated, the EP is a meditative rush of exploratory dancefloor electronics.

Pattern is the latest innovative new artist to emerge
from Manchester's burgeoning bass music scene.
By day working in the infamous Eastern Bloc record
shop while by night joining the production ranks of
fellow Mancunian luminaries like Synkro and Indigo.
His debut, the sublime 'Draft'.
'Draft' is in every respect rebel music. A mix of
opposites pulling together before equally repelling.
Tonal bells and pads flow over coarse bass sounds
and punching kicks. Meanwhile subdued apache
breaks reference a musical root within drum & bass,
set against Pattern's vision of modern 170 BPM
music.
Staying true to the release's Manchester theme,
AnD deliver an unapologetically hard remix. A
relentless 4/4 kick sets the pace for a complete
reinterpretation of Pattern's original composition.
This is a Manchester remix, but it is infused with the
sounds of Detroit, Berlin and Industrial noise. This is
powerful stuff!

Shackleton - Music For The Quiet Hour / The Drawbar Organ Eps Cd X 2

2 x CD in gatefold sleeve For those who want to know the background, it is something like this. I bought an Italian drawbar organ module around two years ago. Apparently Italian organs from that period had a bad reputation but I was so happy with it that it appeared on most of the tracks I had been working on. I thought I had an album together and was supposed to get it mastered on the day after the mastering session for the Pinch and Shackleton release on Honest Jons (sometime towards the end of Summer 2011). I had also been working on a 12 of more spacious music to go with that album as a limited vinyl 12. By the time that I finished the music though, the tracks for that 12 became so long for that I couldn't contain them to two sides of a vinyl. This is what became Music For The Quiet Hour album. In the end we didn't get time to finish the mastering on that day in late Summer 2011 and for one reason or another the date got pushed back three months. Then there was the artwork. There was a lot to do and that took a long time to finish. On top of that I then moved house and studio. To cut a long story short, these things stacked up to a six months or so delay in the release. In the meantime I listened back to the whole 2 hours plus of music a few times and it struck me that Music For The Quiet Hour was an album (yes, a proper album) to be listened to all the way through, whilst the drawbar organ tracks were better suited to 12 releases. Hence the format you have in front of you. A proposed 12 that actually turned out to be an album and a proposed album that turned out to be a series of 12s. In short, there is some new music from me. It's generally bass heavy and percussive with an involved narrative. Some people will like it and some people won't. I think that it is quite different to music I have released before, I suspect that other people won't. Many thanks to musical contributors Andreas Gerth and Kingsuk Biswas. Many thanks as well to Zeke who has done wonderful artwork again and Vengeance Tenfold who has provided great vocals and also the superb letter that proved to be a big inspiration for both the artwork booklet and the music from Music For The Quiet Hour (Part 4 is based on a letter he wrote to his granddaughter who lives in the year 2065). Many thanks to all the people who have supported over the years. I hope that you enjoy the music and only ask that you do not put it on the internet.

Truth - Iron Lung / Medusa

Nearly five years have elapsed since Truth's seminal Deep Medi plate 'The Fatman' announced their arrival as serious talents on the
international dubstep scene. In that time they have nurtured and
developed their reputation as architects of the fiercest, sub-low beats that balance raw dancefloor-rupturing force with the meditative,
eyes-down characteristics of dubstep's earliest formative sound. Their output has been prolific whilst maintaining the highest of
quality control; releases span Black Box, Argon, Boka, Wheel & Deal, Tempa and with their Aquatic Lab LP 'Puppets' they delivered
classic album that hits as hard today as it did back then. In 2013 they remain at the
forefront of dubstep innovation, possessing the ingenuity and creative drive to continue to push the sonic envelope with their
innovative,bass-ravaged sounds.
The latest chapter in their illustrious music careers sees two cuts of intense halfstep pressure released on New Moon Recordings, an
imprint still riding high from the success of the NMN006 transmission provided by kiwi compatriots Perverse. 'Iron Lung' and
'Medusa' are up there
with some of the deepest beats Truth have ever built, as they paint cavernous and paranoid soundscapes on top of supremely
engineered dread basslines. There's an element of cohesiveness across the two tracks with both utilising haunting vocal melodies to
create an icy-cold, ghostly aesthetic that chills to the core; Truth have long been masters of layering beautiful voice-based harmonies
in their music, and it works to great effect here. On 'Medusa', underneath the
precise rigidity of the halfstep drum structure, they imbue so much movement and swing with the subs, as they jump and sink
through varying frequencies with real buoyancy; it's an absolutely killer bassline and something you really have to experience on a
soundsystem. Similarly, on 'Iron Lung' the low-end is of course a focal point, with slow-burn oscillations providing some wicked
syncopation. The beat is typically sparse and skeletal, but the intersection of a collection
perfectly timed growls, pads, muted horns and quaint strikes of percussion all combine to create an intricately detailed piece that
keeps you vigorously rocking from side to side. The 12' as a whole is
another example of fresh, impeccably produced bassweight excellence from the duo, and another firm indicator that Truth's signature
sound is in the rudest of health.

Following on from his long awaited album KU:PALM in November of last year, we now see its lead track Pyramid get a vinyl release

on Dusk & Blackdown's Keysound Recordings, as well as a 12' on Pinch's influential Tectonic Recordings. Mixing the darkest
elements of funky, dub and syncopated grime with a distinctly UK edge, Beneath's complex layered beats result in a truly unique
