Surely Bassy - 001 Ep

Surely Bassy

001 Ep

12inchSB001
Surely Bassy
31.07.2012

Varying in styles on an overall contemporary bass theme, the debut release from the fantastically-named Surely Bassy Records comes in the form of a four track EP featuring four new producers. The first track is provided by London based producer Glentron. 'Cast a Light' sets the tone, with shuffling drums, chopped vocal harmonies and soothing bass line, exploring similar minimalist garage ground and in equally effective fashion as the mighty Spatial. Mepham takes it deeper with his contribution, 'Shack'; a haunting soundscape of atmospheric delayed techno with pounding bass, eerie sampling and progressive undertone, riding an emphasised stepper rhythm. Isaac Martin delivers a more experimental house edge with his track, 'A New Dawn (Oh Baby)'. It's driving 2-step beat and warm jets of rising melodic synth are sure to drive the dancefloor, while propulsive sub and soundsystem / deejay effects add extra flavoursome punch. Leeds based A. Ashdown closes the EP with his deep and melancholy drift through gallic themes on the shuffling, Clubroot-esque 'Stems'. So far these tracks have been received well by DJs and producers, with Glentron's 'Cast a Light' featured at number two in Dom Servini's Allo Love Ten chart for November, and the release has been gaining radio play on London's Colourful Radio and Sub FM, as well as plenty of club play across the country. With several more equally high grade questing releases in the can, Surely Bassy is definitely a label to listen out for in 2011.

Farkas - Farkas

ompleting his debut release on the label, Meet The Farkas Part Two features three more tracks showing Farkas' raw talent. Ironman 2 is a collaboration with Danish artist RDG that has been getting massive support from NType and Walsh on Rinse FM, smashing clubs worldwide for the last couple of months. Farkas brings another deep sub roller to the label with a catchy melody that will stay in your head all day! Idiomatic is Farkas' spin on the early garage sound. Raw and punchy drums sit predominantly on top of jazzy synths from start to finish. This track is perfect for those sunny summer days. 'I've loved this track since I first heard it! It's got a wicked bassline and a groovy-funky melody, love it!! ' - label owner, Walsh Body Language completes the release. Blending a silky piano riff with elements of jungle, this track is a true reflection of Farkas' unique and fresh sound. Wheel and Deal artists, Soap Dodgers, have supported the release with the tracks featuring heavily in recent sets, ' Ultimate party every time! Ironman and Idiomatic never fail to get the floor movin'.' All three tracks have been getting huge support from Hatcha (KISS FM/Sin City Recs), Von D (Disfigured Dubz), Dismantle (BBC Radio 1/Rinse FM/Wheel and Deal Recs), LAXX (BFR/Wheel and Deal Recs) and Mistajam (BBC Radio 1) amongst other top DJ's. Future releases on the label are planned with fellow Biscuit Factory artist' LAXX. Farkas also has releases planned with Wheel and Deal Records, further cementing himself as a key upcoming artist.

Guy Andrews - The Wait / Hands In Mine

Following last year's triumphant debut on Untold's imprint Hemlock, Brighton based producer Guy Andrews is back with his first 12 for Hotflush Recordings. A superb followup to his 2011 auditory missive, The Wait / Hands in Mine merges percussive elements with heavy basslines resulting in two dark dancefloor cuts. Shuffling and persistent, Side A is bass-driven track filled with arpeggiated goodness, while on the flip, Andrews shows off his ability to manipulate genres by using a bass kick and frenzied rhythmic percussion to dial up an atmospheric tune. With recent acclaim from XLR8R, Resident Advisor and Truants along with DJ and radio support from the likes of Benji B, L-Vis 1990, Brackles, Sound Pellegrino, Shortstuff, Benjamin Damage and Throwing Snow, Guy Andrews is on the rise. Lookout for another 12 via Hotflush this Fall.

Biome & Demon ^ - Incubus / Symmetry

Macabre Unit Vinyl touches down for its second offering on wax, following up DCult and Biome's first plate earlier in the year with 2 tunes from the combo of the irrepressible Biome, and MUD/MUV head-honcho and Macabre veteran Demon.
A Side 'Incubus', catches you by surprise. It's not quite what you expect from this pairing, but certainly does the job. Haunting eastern vocals rise from the intro, building the atmosphere and intensity before the drop smashes you in the jaw. Long low slung bass notes rise into aggressive snarls, brooding under the crisp, rolling percussion and brain-tunnelling riff, with Biome and Demon each adding their individual touches to cover depth and darkness, whilst still generating a warm and uplifting feel. It catches you out again, the 32 bar switch almost Grime like in its intensity and structure changes the pace completely, scrambling the signals in your brain and instantly causing your hand to form a gunfinger and ventilate the nearest imaginary ceiling. A Jekyll and Hyde smasher. Flip Side 'Symmetry' sees the pairing fuse halfstep and tribal, layers of congo vibes shuffling amongst a neck snapping industrial undercurrent. Splattering snarls, growls and stabs zip across pulsating lows, with sinister flecks of world ending darkness. Both artists break loose on edits, perfectly punctuating this hard hitter with ferocity and malevolence. Killer combo death moves!

J : Kenzo - Invaderz/depth Charge

Over the past few years, J:Kenzo has gone from being a promising one-to-watch in the dubstep scene, to a deeply respected producer capable of approaching the genre from all manner of angles. Alongside fellow Tempa signings SP:MC, LX ONE and Proxima, his tracks - deep, dense and physically overbearing - offer continued proof that a minimalist approach can, if wielded properly, give devastating results. Having made his Tempa debut last year with the cinematic halfstep of 'The Roteks', and followed it up with the subtly anthemic 'Ruffhouse', his third 12" for the label shows off two varied sides of his sound.

Ruben Da Silva Ft Skinnyman - Sensi Skank

With a reputation as one of the UK's leading labels for contemporary dubwise produce forged in the last year with releases by dub heavyweights such as Earl 16, Mungo's Hi Fi, Nick Manasseh, and RSD, Reggae Roast come with the new single from Ruben Da Silva featuring Skinnyman. 'Sensi Skank' is yet another home grown slice of hard hitting digital roots, set to shake speaker stacks across the land. Ruben Da Silva is quickly becoming a major force on the British roots scene and one of the hottest new voices in town. The beautifully distinctive tone to his vocal carries the track as he begrudges the fact that he is criminalized and forced to smoke undercover. Skinnyman, the long time outspoken advocator of the legalisation of cannabis, makes a rare but unforgettable appearance, and as ever his flow and delivery are second to none, delivering a socially analytical commentary. The dub version appears courtesy of Murray Man, a true veteran of the scene, who has been running sound systems since the '80s, his distinctive Digi-Roots production style smashing up dancefloors across the world. Finally, Placid from the Undiluted Records camp, also the home of Ed Solo and Brockie, are on remix duties and come with a hard hitting drum & bass stomper that is sure to mash up the place. Already receiving plays from junglist A-listers such as Hype (Kiss FM) and Sub Focus (Ram Records), their DnB refix sure brings some added heat to an already red hot smoking release.

Cluekid - Into The Jungle / Snotling / Pluto

Cluekid, part of the croydon fraternity, who emerged in the early days of Dubstep. With a back catalog of successful releases and collaborations with the likes of Skream and Cotti, Cluekid has his debut release on N-Types Terrain records. Into the Jungle: Fits perfectly into the Terrain sound. Jungle and tribal influences rain through, with congo drums rolling over a thunderous sub line. This is bound to have all old school and future junglist steppers skanking out warehouse style. This is reminiscent of the tribal Dubstep Hatcha championed in 2001. With continuous support from Mistajam, N-Type, Caspa, Surge and Walsh. Snotling: Dark half step roller with complimentary euphoric melodies. Older style halfstep with a touch of future technology. Exclusively played on N-Types Rinse FM show, and by Surge and Walsh. Pluto: Back to the jungle, one for the old school heads. Classic old school breaks, popping 808 baseline, sirens and Ragga sample. This one takes it back to the early Jungle Techno days. As the track says, 'Murder dem from early'. Salute!

0DEEP MEDi are very happy to welcome Jack Sparrow to the label with his latest single 'Afraid of Me'. Leeds based Ryan Wild aka Jack Sparrow has ben producing his own strain of Dubstep since 2006 and in that time has shown his versatility with releases on Contagious, Earwax and Tectonic ranging from dark tribal techno to heavy Soundsystem pressure. With residencies at Exodus/DMZ Leeds, Outlook festival, numerous shows and tours worldwide Jack Sparrow is becoming a highly in demand DJ and producer. Jack is also one half of production duo 'Author' who released their debut album in November 2011. His first release on MEDi shows Jacks love of Techno and Soundsystem culture with the lead track 'Afraid Of Me'. 'Afraid Of Me' intros with a heavy kick and twisted techno influences which drops straight into the pulsating sub bass which is tenacious throughout, only pausing for the beautifully dark breakdown where the track opens up and threatens to roll into a film score evocative of the 'Watchmen' from where the sinister vocal sample is taken. 'This city's free of me, I've seen it's true face'. The flip 'Good Old Days' is a far more laidback, meditative and blissful vibe, Moody old skool jazz running's with tripped out blissful sax, one for the hot summer nights!

Jamie George - Flying Saucer

Roska's Kicks and Snares/RKS is back with another big release, and this time it comes courtesy of Jamie George with the hotly anticipated Flying Saucer. First picked up by DJ Oneman, making it a feature on his Rinse mix cd, support for this track has grown and grown with well known acts such as Toddla T, Hot Chip and Tomb Crew repping it hard. Combining elements of UKG, House and Dubstep Jamie has created an instant classic that has worked hard to earn this release and the plays of DJ's all across the country. Roska himself steps up with the first remix, a re-imagining with special attention on the percussion, elements of tribal and dancehall peel back the layers of the original in the way that only a talented minimalist like Roska can. With his speciality lying in the truly funky Roska drops a mix that literally drags you up to your feet and pushes you harder the longer it's played. J Kenzo, of Dub Police fame, completes the package with a much darker, harder affair. You get the impression he took the original track and made it watch the entire Saw series back to back with Halloween then sent it back scarred forever. In all seriousness Kenzo has a real talent for creating dark, bass driven tracks and he has expanding on that here adding heavy portions of electro and old school to compose a truly original mix. Check them out and get back to us.

Kowton - Keep Walking / Show Me

Kowton's EPs are the best possible fit for 'the devil's workshop' - they're not only deep, dark and warm, but also seductive and, at a pinch, sexy - just like the Dark Prince, or so I've been told. Perhaps I've come under Satan's sway, but for me, both EPs released so far on Idle Hands sound like someone who's been at it for much, much longer: this is a music knowledge which is anything but basic. Quentin Hiatus / Stunna - Different Strokes Ep

Straying away from their more familiar cutting-edge Drum & Bass landscape, IM:Ltd are taking to pastures new with their latest offspring from the somewhat uninhibited and off-kilter Quentin Hiatus. With a deep sun-dappled atmosphere, mixing old-school house vibes and snappy hooks with a dirty south laidback feel, the 'Different Strokes EP' might be another mellow and melodic release but it's not going to blend into the background. Showing a real sense of movement and progression, this EP surely deserves a full play through as each track unravels in its own time, and fits together in order like an audio jigsaw puzzle. Comfortingly criss-crossed between genres, 'Serena' smoothly tips this release over the edge almost immediately when the delicious sound of old school House
ripples through. Chilled but somehow lively, 'Ascendamental Drop' is a warm haze of synthy mirages bubbling over a more solidly recognisable dubstep beat.
On the B side, far dubbier, far creepier, you will find Stunna's take on 'Different Strokes' who turns the original into a classy cinematic urban reggae dub piece.
Babylon fighter style... live and direct from Chicago (!).
Digital Only Track - As a conclusion, the original mix of 'Different Strokes' is a drumstep track filled with toweringly eerie sounds and textures, all culminating in a bass music world unlike so many others.

Blu Mar Ten - Love Is The Devil Remixes Part Two

This July Blu Mar Ten releases the second in a three-part series of remixes from their album 'Love is the Devil'. The Beginning (Joe
Syntax remix) - Rising star of Med School Music, Joe Syntax, channels the spirit of 90s Bristol and transforms 'The Beginning' from
its original esoteric moodiness into a militant bassline stepper that recalls the high points of V Recordings and Full Cycle. Metronomic
pulses and vocal samples lead up to an almighty analogue bassline guaranteed to do the required damage to any club. Truly, 'High
Tech Soul'. Blue Skies (Unquote remix) - Joe Syntax's Med School brother-in-arms, Unquote, tackles the frenetic percussion and
dense sound design of the original 'Blue Skies' head-on, stripping it down and folding it back in to itself in a bleak, rain-filled dub
workout. Fragments of the original can be heard in the far distance, pitched down, chopped up and smothered in static while a river
of deeper-than-deep basslines carry lo-fi vocal chops, dubbed out instrumentation and rusty drums in its current. BMT008 will be
available as a strictly limited 12' pressing together with mp3s. This will be a single-run only with no repressings. Full sleeve artwork
by resident designer ithinkitsnice. Blu Mar Ten receives regular DJ support from: Marky, London Elektricity, SPY, Teebee, Instra:
mental, D Bridge, Hype, Logistics, Ed Rush, Marcus Intalex, Utah Jazz, Makoto, Spectrasoul, Kasra, Ulterior Motive, Apex, Craggz,

Deft - Clotting Ep

Deft

Clotting Ep

12inchWOT004
WOTNOT MUSIC LTD
28.06.2012

Quickly rising on the horizon of the London electronic scene, Croydon-based Deft joins forces with WotNot Music for an enchanting two-track EP with three beastly remixes. Deft's frenetic live sets and full-bodied productions have led to support slots for Tokimonsta and Bullion, the opening track on Maya Jane Coles DJ Kicks mix, and remix duties for Gang Colours, Fybe:one and Graham Coxon, not to mention a forthcoming full-length release on Hypercolour offshoot Space Hardware. While driving dancefloors wild with an energetic and fresh brand of ghetto-tech and footwork to rival the more predictable elements of London's dance-music scene, Deft's production on this release betrays his hip hop origins in a whole new way, with seductive beats, G-funk-esque top lines and unlimited swagger.
Lead track Clotting begins with a sensual percussive atmosphere and deep wobbling subs before funky synth stabs hit like beautiful, talc-coated pimp slaps. B-side Thought You'd Fancy It takes the form of fluid wonk, with kitchen sink percussion and dreamy synths. Jimmy Edgar drops the talkbox on a skippy, toe-tapping, raw-funk remix that takes Clotting to the dancefloor without losing its subtlety, while JJ Mumbles' more playful 4x4 re-work is full-on headnod. Chesslo Junior shows no mercy with a dirty-dirty-south hip hop remix of Thought You'd Fancy It that will be receiving a whole lot of pull-ups in 2012.Veteran Jimmy Edgar aside, this release brings together some the most exciting new faces from across the UK's EDM scenes, reinforced by the appearance of Fybe:one, Soosh and (U) remixes on the bonus package. Gathering such a team together highlights the growing strength of the WotNot machine and sets big expectations for the year to come from both the label and Deft's future releases.

Distal & Hxdb - Booyant / Amphibian

Atlanta producer Distal teams up with Vancouver's HxdB for 'Booyant', an absolutely killer collaboration that fuses the best elements of both producers in fine style. Taking a 136bpm tempo and bridging dubstep with a cutting edge bass-heavy house vibe, the duo pull together an intimate dancefloor bubbler that fans of Night Slugs and Swamp 81 will most likely feel quite at home with. Awash with lush synths and gurgling sound bytes, 'Booyant' is a quality track to tickle many a fancy. Flip to Side AA for Distal's solo effort 'Amphibian', an excellent piece of 140bpm machine music, whirring and clicking in a roughly similar vein to Instra:mental's 'Rift Zone'. Experimental dubstep pressure for the open minded, guaranteed future-proof. Distal will release his debut album 'Civilization' on Tectonic later in the spring of 2012.

Grenier - Uncertain / Vendetta

Two swung, techy killers on Tectonic for the summer dances.
Having recorded a number of excellent deep, soulful but hard hitting dubstep releases under his DJG monkier, San Francisco's Dean J. Grenier decided to move into fresher pastures this year, announcing his new alias as Grenier. Kicking off with a killer release on Photek Productions early on in 2012 - and not many artists aside from Photek himself can claim a plate on his highly respected imprint - Grenier takes a dark-jungle and classic dubstep inspired perspective on the currently favoured 128bpm / house tempo, and he now delivers a stunning 12" for Tectonic in the process. 'Uncertain' featured on Tectonic label boss Pinch's acclaimed 'Fabriclive' mix earlier this year and has been highly requested ever since. Tough bass stabs punch in the intro before wheeling backwards and slamming into a hard, almost 4/4 rhythm, fully charged with a weighted sub. The track devleops with jazzy references and sonic flashes of musicality, almost reminicent of early Peshay and Metalheadz. It is, by any measure, a killer tune. On the flip, 'Vendetta' sticks again with the 128bpm tempo but takes a heavy dark wobble sound, a-la Skream circa 2006, and moulds it around a stepping 4/4 rhythm. This makes for a simple and effective rhythmical weapon of choice that encapsulates much of what made early dubstep so interesting, reincarnated here at the slower housey tempo

16.07.2012

Opening track 'What I Do' introduces the EP on a poignant note with its sombre keys and emotive vocal flourishes without forsaking
any of the force at its fingertips, driven by the bubbling subs and electric midrange. 'Fall' then sweeps in on a lush bed of glistening
keys, soft vocal flourishes and a skipping drum line before crashing back down to earth with waves of warping bass tones blasting
through the low end of the track. Counterpointed by the soaring synth notes that flicker above, Mydas balances the light and dark
elements brilliantly. Next, 'If I Ever' builds atmosphere with its smooth drum shuffle and crystalline chords, swelling into the track's
release with bright synth flourishes, smooth bass notes and a hollow snare crack that keeps it firmly anchored on the dance floor
Mydas then takes on Antiserum & 12th Planet's collab 'Purple & Gold' flipping the colourful synths from the original and funnelling
them through the maniacal waves of bass that run through the track.

Oneman may have started turning heads by melding old school UK garage with DMZ style dubstep, but he's proven on London institution Rinse FM that he is capable of more than marrying classics with current beats. An essential part of the station's roster, broadcasting his own agenda for two hours every Sunday night, he's known for his flawless mixing, his impeccable selection and his old meets new school mergers. His 'FABRICLIVE' mix manages to cement all of the above in an incredibly understated way. The selection bounds through choice cuts from the last couple of years by Joy Orbison, SBTRKT and Mosca to current productions from Pearson Sound, Lando Kal and Teeth, all the time peppered by garage classics from Nu-Birth, Steve Gurley and Youngstar.

Sküge is Hugues Croibien, a 30 year old Belgian electronic music producer who brings a whole new level of detail, sounds and expression to the current underground bass music movement. Seen live alongside some of the scene's most respected producers including Kanji Kinetic, Mustard Gunn, Ebola and Subjex, Sküge certainly has a unique and powerful sound you will struggle to find elsewhere. Imagine this... inspiration from the micro-edit, mash-up ways of breakcore, combine it with ragga and reggae vibes and then play it out through a towering sound system in an '80s video game arcade. An awesome concoction of well produced beats, blips and melodies enabling you to take control of any dance floor, get the most concerted beat diggers head-nodding as well as defeat that end of level boss! The opening track 'Runn On A Band' will take any current beatstrumental and permanently overwrite it with addictive head-nodding vibes. 'Mesecina' brings on the broken but flowing beats with an 8-bit, snake-charming lead. 'Katerish' lifts the pounding rhythm to the next level with it's dancehall beat, evolving and rumbling bassline and retuned rave hoovers. 'Robotator Kinely Abstract' brings a collapsing bit-crunched beat and chipped-out bass and lead, sure to make people pull all the shapes on the dance floor. 'Billy Hillys' takes over the club with its 4/4 percussion, driving yet stuttered kick drum and micro-edit bass. 'Gambula' drops the amens in to the mix to great effect with an amazing and complex combined bass and lead. 'Grieg' uses a clever bassline reworked from the Inspector Gadget theme tune and finally 'Mario' is the well-known Nintendo game theme tune with an awesome AFX-esque bouncing ball drum pattern. This release will be a strictly limited 100-copy CD with screen printed fold out poster-sleeve and digital download code.

Stray & Halogenix - The Pursuit / Poison

Stray & Halogenix have got together on the well established label, Warm Communications to present some pure drum & bass finery.
Both tunes have a much darker feel, especially 'Poison' which combines staggered bass jabs with rolling subs and distorted vocals.
The outcome is a jittery dance floor smasher that will trip out even the most avid dark and underground d&b fans. 'The Pursuit' has
been engineered by Stray individually, and this riddim similarly encapsulates the industrial sinister sound Warm Comms. are
attempting to push with this release. One word to describe it: success. http://www.mrgruffmusic.com

Truth - Babylon London / Red Light

The third release from Artikal Music UK provides us with a sub driven 12' from dubstep pioneers TRUTH. The A side 'Babylon
London' brings a dark, eerie soundscape with powerful 808 hits that will make ribcages rattle across the dancefloor. Dubby vocal
delays and spacious mids, combined with teasing pauses between the main sub continue the impact, keeping heads nodding
throughout. Babylon London has put some of the most legendary sound systems to test, at the hands of dubstep's finest selectas.
On the flip we have 'Red Light,' a dubwise roller consisting of a dominant roots reggae sub, complimented with simplistic pads and
atmospherics that provide a sinister feel. It's a darker twist on the dubbed out vibe, with a subtle female vocal processed with long
delays to sit nicely on top of this clean-cut production.

Utah Jazz - Groove Therapy

One of the shining lights of the noughties' liquid-funk boom, Luke Wilson's much envied library of rare soul samples continues to earn him legions of international fans and a unique perch in the d'n'b galaxy.
True to his defiantly old-skool production ethic, album number three is awash with the dusky sax trills, lilting piano rolls and shuffling breaks that have become his smile-inducing signature - a trove of unvarnished rollers entirely devoid of mechanoid modern gloss or studio gimmicks. You'll also find sassy reggae-flecked funk ('The Warning' feat. David Boomah) and loping 150bpm breakbeat grooves ('Infinity'), but it's the tear-jerking brilliance of mournful piano gems like 'Loops for Days' that do it for us. Get those jazz-hands ready, people - summer has officially arrived. 9/10

Keep Shelly In Athens - Campus Martius Ep

Hailing from Greece's capital, the duo Keep Shelly In Athens have been the toast of the blog world for a while now, and their first EP for Planet Mu is in keeping with a consistent level of odd synth-pop that the label has released this year from Tropics to Vezelay, and Heterotic to Solar Bears. With several releases under their belt they first came to the label's attention with their remix of Solar Bears 'Cub', an awesome re-imagining of the track from SB's 'She Was Coloured In' album. The remix is a monumental slice of cold but blissful synth pop, with stadium-sized reverbs and punched-in repetitive vocals over rumbling guitars and punchy drums. 'The Chains' has all the off-key atmosphere of an Italian horror film soundtrack with the band's female singer intoning a melody that could come from a 'Violator'-era Depeche Mode song. The whole song breaks down towards the end into an intense finale. The EP's title track 'Campus Martius' has a giant humming bassline, with electronic drums scratching away like insects flying at windows, as a gentle piano line ripples over the top painting a feeling of airy pleasure while vocal samples drop a melody at altered pitches in a scene of tentative bliss. Finally, 'Struggle With Yourself' pits Sarah's raw singing over a weird acidic bassline that could easily sound at home on a Coil record along with loose guitar strums, before the track breaks into light spoken word and angelic vocals, finishing off as it started, but with a stark warning. Limited pressing on blue vinyl.

Bok Bok - Southside Remixes

In true organic style - just like when Vonstroke asked to remix "Wut" - rather than being commissioned by NS this release happened because the remixers approached BOK BOK with their enthusiasm to work on his 2011 grime hit "Silo Pass".
