Illuvia - Milla Remix Sampler Ep

Hypnus are pleased to present the second edition of their Serum series which is intended as a hub of collaborations. Every record will be some sort of joint effort with one or more of the Hypnus artists and they're hoping to push a more eclectic bouquet of musical styles in tandem with the regular Hypnus series.

The first year they launched the series by inviting rising talents Primal Code to release two tracks with interpretations by Feral and Luigi Tozzi. For the second edition we are now introduced to the amazingly deep dubs of Illuvia (real name Ludvig Cimbrelius, aka. Purl), interpreted by the before-mentioned Primal Code as well as label head Ntogn under his paradisaical pseudonym Blomkraft. Released as a sampler vinyl as well as a full-length digital album.

The music of Ludvig Cimbrelius comes in many shapes and forms with a handful of monikers making up a vast sea of ethereal and mesmerizing electronic music. His works range from classical piano excursions and evolving ambient music to drum & bass and dub techno. With that said, we easily get a sensation of taking part of a state of mind rather than listening to a set of musical compositions. Now, please bathe yourselves in the lush vibes of Illuvia.

Early support from Cio D'Or, Claudio PRC, Ness, TM404 and Etapp Kyle to name a few.

Ltj Xperience - Beggar Groove

Luca LTJ Trevisi (LTJ Xperience) began his dj/producer career in the 80s. As resident dj in two of the most famous Italian clubs of the time, Kinky in Bologna and Cap Creus in Imola, he was one of the first Italian jocks to spin House and to re-propose those black music, jazz and latin-bossa classics from the 70s that at the end of the same decade would have given birth to the Acid Jazz and Rare Groove movements. His first single release in 1988, titled First Job, together with Kekkotronics, was also the first release ever on Bologna based Irma Records. It was featured in a lot of compilations of the time and entered several playlists, rapidly reaching cult status for many UK and US djs. During the early 90s LTJ delivered a couple of singles in a kind of pre-breakbeat
style: Dont Stop The Sax, released all over Europe, and Funky Superfly. He also produced US singer Tameka Starrs single Going In Circles, always for Irma Records, still a
classic in the downtempo/r&b field. In the second half of the nineties Luca began to produce acid jazz bands like Bossa Nostra, still today one of Irma Records main acts. Their
first album had Vicky Anderson as special guest and today is still considered one of the most important European acid jazz albums. In the following years he concentrated on developing his activity as collector and rare vinyl merchant, which gave him the chance to get in touch with djs from all over the World and to discover many forgotten gems from the past years. Thanks to this experience he was able to create two extremely successful rarities series on Irma Records: Groovy and Suono Libero. In the meanwhile LTJ started to dj outside Italy too, performing in important venues like the Blue Note and Jazz Café in London, Giant Step in New York and Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. In 1999 saw the release of his first solo album under the LTJ Xperience moniker. The album was produced with the collaboration of fellow Irma artist and producer Ohm Guru and had Taka Boom and Jackson Sloan among the guests. Two of the
main tracks on the album are brazil house classic Sombre Guitar and title track Moon Beat, which became a true hit of the Chill Out genre, featured in dozens of important compilations

Fedbymachines - Mountains Fields Rivers

After the success of his alchemic Relapse EP, Fedbymachines returns to Shipwrec with his brand of genre splicing electronics. The 12" opens in the blurry haze of "Rest Rain." Drenched in static, dubby notes trudge next to whispered hi-hits as liquid notes sparkle. A deftness of touch permeates the entire record, coming to the fore in the gentle currents and sways of "Bestill" before the cascading resonance of "Solos." Nothing is overstated in this journey into deep absorption and introspection, instead Fedbymachines carefully crafts his soundscapes in complementary levels to construct fluid musical feats. The finale comes with "Bound." From an understated opening, the track comes to life as a textured beat takes hold allowing radiant keys shine. A multi-layered release from a multifaceted musician.

Aril Brikha - Dance Of A Trillion Stars

tehran born, stockholm, sweden based(now berlin) dj and producer aril brikha is no newcomer to the global electronic music scene.

since the late 1990ees his genre meltdown between techno and house seduces club music enthusiasts around the world. influenced by all sorts of electronic music - ranging from depeche mode, front 242 and jean-michel jarre to robert hood and underground resistance – his sounds always wind between straight up club tracks and more deep unwound moving arrangements.

as one of the most prolific producers around he released ep’s on labels like kompakt, poker flat, his own company art of vengeance as well as an album for derrick may’s transmat imprint and a long-player for legendary peacefrog records. after mesmerizing ep’s for mule musiq in early 2019, he now drops a quieter album on the tokyo based enterprise, showing his love for slow trance influenced compositions, that are perfect for meditative moments and thoughtful party situations.

his new productions listen to dreamy names like “a cautious gaze” or “everything was here first” and get constantly enlarged with melodies, sounds and harmonies that go beyond the usual characteristics of a dance album.

the overall touch is ambientish, partly discreet rolling bass-lines call for a physical movement while spherical synthlines drift across deep floating trance territory.

an album for dreamers, that love to get lost in a contemporary un-nostalgic musical journey without the dictation to dance. a record that explores an infinite space of sound with a heartfelt human touch delivered in eight slow grooving tracks mixed in perfection.

all hand out a moving story arc full of fluid in-the-moment moods who dance around subliminal bass shapes and dreamfully synth pads. you can call it ambient. you can call it trance. whatever you name it, the laidback enthusiasm of “dance of a trillion stars” brings an auditory experience that haunts deeply, gives space for the tones between the tones and prepares all aril brikha fans peacefully for his upcoming adventures for the dancefloor.

Fred Und Luna - Im Weltenraum

„Fred und Luna is a miraculous treasure chest with seemingly unlimited realms of Krautelektro and Elektrokraut music.“ FRANK WIEDEMANN (ÂME/INNERVISIONS)
„Fred und Luna’s universe is full of wonderful possibilities and greets you like an old friend whistling a long forgotten melody.“ PATRICK PULSINGER

Masayoshi Fujita & Jan Jelinek - Schaum

Repress!

Faitiche presents the release of a new album by Masayoshi Fujita & Jan Jelinek (faitiche13). Since their debut (Bird, Lake, Objects, faitiche03, 2010) they have played improvised concerts around the world. Japanese vibraphonist Masayoshi Fujita prepares his instrument with various percussion elements as well as metal objects and toys, while Jan Jelinek layers loops made using small-scale electronic devices. Schaum (German for froth, foam) is the duo's second album.

"The river, forcing its way through veins between the outposts of the forest, was a great heart. Placidly as it flowed, gently as its descent beat against its vague banks, it brought and gathered sustenance for the busily mediating humus that swelled sunwards in the strangest cell configurations, trees, plants, animals. The silence all round was uncanny and stuck on the ear. Spasmodic squelches, a gurgling in the muddy hollows of the bank beneath overhanging shagginess, the slurping of ominous cavities, that shot out now and again between the long-spun threads of time, like something detonating, testified to the steady monotony of the process. From the forest itself came a crackling rhythm. There the mighty Pan could still be heard to rumble." - from the novel Tropics by Robert Müller (translated by N. Grindell)

*****

Dear Masayoshi Fujita,
many thanks for the audio files. Your additional vibraphone recordings go wonderfully with the material we have already. Preparing the vibraphone with more percussion instruments was the right decision. Combined with my tightly woven synthesizer and sample loops, the result is a fragmented sense of space. I have taken the liberty of manipulating certain recordings. One might now say that our joint recordings are both a basis for further processing and new pieces in their own right.

While listening through our improvisations, I noticed a tendency towards atmospheric sounds. I am almost tempted to call them tropical. This has strengthened my resolve to work with dense background textures - among others, I'm using material produced in connection with my radio pieces Kennen Sie Otahiti (Do you know Otahiti SWR2, 2012) and Dialoge zur Anthropologie (Dialogs on Anthropology, SWR2, 2013): artificial field recordings, jungle and rain forest settings that do not hide their staged, fictional character. They are synthetic and speculative. As you know, I have long been obsessed with the tropics. This obsession involves a mental image of a specific quality of landscape: deliriously extravagant unstructuredness, hostile to life but also excessively productive. I am fascinated by the idea of installing clear minimalist forms amid such luxuriant tropical growth. Perhaps my image of the city of Brasilia is a good example: the utopia of elegant and ascetic modernism, surrounded by rampant vegetation.

Corresponding to this, I would like to expand our liner notes to include a quotation from Robert Müller's novel Tropics - an expressionist travelogue published in Germany in 1915. It goes without saying that this work cannot be wholeheartedly embraced: its imperialistic fantasies of omnipotence and its 'master race' posturing, characteristic of that time and place, are, of course, intolerable. Please excuse my casually dismissing this, but it is not what I am interested in here. Tropics is fascinating as a nervous jungle phantasm that openly indulges in exoticism at the same time as deconstructing it. In this way, the main character's adventure becomes a journey into the subjective. It resembles a feverish inner delirium, exposing exoticism as a simulated, utopian perspective. What it boils down to is insubstantial, nothing but foam and froth.

New Atlantis 2x12"

2x12inchOSTGUTLP31
Ostgut Ton
08.03.2019

Oh, lovely appearance of death, No sight upon earth is so fair; Not all the gay pageants that breathe, Can with a dead body compare.

- Charles Wesley, A Funeral Hymn for a Believer, 1780

So begins New Atlantis, the fourth full-length album by longtime Berghain resident Efdemin aka Phillip Sollmann. The words, sung by 60s California art icon William T. Wiley and embedded in glowing drone swells, set an otherworldly tone for Sollmann's first solo release on Ostgut Ton. Over eight tracks, New Atlantis oscillates between fast, kaleidoscopic techno, multilayered drones and acoustic instrumentation, fusing for the first time Sollmann's deep dancefloor productions as Efdemin with his sound art and experimental music projects. The latter include 2017's Harry Partch- inspired Monophonie performance and 2018's Panama / Suez EP with Oren Ambarchi and Konrad Sprenger. Long drawn to utopian musical traditions, Sollmann took inspiration for New Atlantis from Francis Bacon's unfinished 17th century novel of the same name, which describes a fictional island devoted to social progress through the synthesis of art, science, technology and fashion. In the story, Bacon imagines futuristic 'sound houses', which contain musical instruments capable of recreating the entirety of the sounds of the universe; a 400-year-old prophesy of today's digital sonic reality. Through Sollmann's lens, Bacon's vision ebbs and flows over 50 minutes in varying speeds and colors, emerging as a tapestry of different utopian musical traditions - through billowing synth lines, early Detroit techno, resonant wooden percussion, trance, droning organs, dulcimer, electric guitars, hurdy-gurdy, just intonation, poetry, hymns and murmuring voices. Sometimes they merge into epic, rhythmic journeys like the 14-minute long title track; other times they appear as a briefly open sound portal ('Temple'), or in the forlorn human voice on 'Oh, Lovely Appearance Of Death', calling to be freed from jail of the human body and pass into the afterlife. Like previous Efdemin albums on Dial, New Atlantis veers off the techno path to explore other musical territory. Here however, Sollmann occasionally abandons the club entirely, returning only to push its boundaries with other instruments, mythologies and psychedelic story telling.

Oh, lovely appearance of death, No sight upon earth is so fair; Not all the gay pageants that breathe, Can with a dead body compare.

- Charles Wesley, A Funeral Hymn for a Believer, 1780

06.02.2018

After numerous concerts and performances throughout the last years, Summe 1 is Andreas O. Hirsch's first release on makiphon. The album concentrates on peculiar soundscapes and drony pieces, carefully inter- woven by means of pitched harmonicas, electric guitars, mini fans, de- lays and the electric palm leaf, an electroacoustic invention of the artist. The eight titles evoke a space somewhere between interstellar geography (Maxwell Mountains - a plateau on planet Venus), abstract physics (Teilchenbeschleuniger), botanical scenery and animality: Kemeri 5 am features nocturnal crane calls that Hirsch recorded on a bike trip in a swamp near Riga while he was busy with decoding bird messages via morse code. Opossum Pravda is dedicated to the tenacious marsupial that likes to wander around at night and which is able to hang from trees by its tail. Kautschukwaage seems to suggest an exotic setting and provides a link to the rubber bands which one hears resonating in the miniature.
Sleeve designed by the artist. 300 copies. Mastered by Joseph Suchy.

27.02.2012

One of the most eagerly anticipated electronic albums of 2012 is finally released! After a series of groundbreaking singles: 'Pain In the Ass', 'I'm Week' and 'Ghetto Kraviz' (featured here) Muscovite Nina Kraviz is set to release her eponymously titled debut artist album on Radio Slave's superb Rekids imprint.

Nina's album is a combination of stripped-bare house, deepest Detroit sounds via beautifully ambient pockets and more soul infused slo-mo jams, all coated with an authentic analogue finish and Nina exquisite vocals. The music is emotive and engaging, whilst being something truly original and inspirational. The album features collaborations with Hard Ton and King Aus. Playing out like a full artistic statement rather than just a collection of tracks, the odd time signatures, innocent and waify vocals, muted acid lines and hypnotic loops layered up by Nina all work subtly at pulling you into her world. A superbly, executed and accomplished debut album that has already set the bar high for electronic albums this year.

Fabrizio Lapiana - Intraverso LP 2x12"

'Intraverso is a journey in that momentary 'inbetween land' that many of us experience sometimes. It explores the turmoil of feelings of when one gets stuck in the middle, floating in between ambition and complete stillness'.

Fabrizio Lapiana is a well-known name on the contemporary Italian techno scene. He has been involved in music since the 90's when he started DJ'ing in his hometown Rome. To date he has over two handfuls of releases on labels such as Figure Jams, Arts and M_Rec Ltd - as well as his own imprint, the well renowned Attic Music, founded in 2008.
Intraverso is Fabrizio's debut album, set for release on his label. The record is a very personal journey, according to the artist himself. You here find him examining different territory than where he usually heads within his productions. The album, which consists of nine songs in total, was composed between April 2016 and February 2017 in his studio in Rome. Written in a state of 'introspect', we here see an artist in motion. Changing. Evolving. The perfect moment to explore something new and unveil a different side of yourself to the world.

The intro 'Early Morning Waves' opens the album with its own quiet dramatic tone, waves hitting the shore as we move into 'Bret'. A cloud-walking kind of melody welcomes you, accompanied by a curious beat driving the journey forward. A deep heavy bassline and almost ancient sounding melody rises in 'Onironauta' (reflecting 'Early Morning Waves' mystical mood) until more playful elements blends in. The contemplative bass elements continue in the title track of the album; 'Intraverso' is a track of mind traveling discovery, yet before drifting too far you are grabbed by a snare, a clap of white noise and a pulsating beat to keep you on track. Further on, 'Lost In Negative Thoughts (reshaped)' reveals itself with its heavy ominous drumbeats and a dark spun web of strings is joined by sounds of distant life and machinery. Then there is 'Distance' which is the album's first flirt with more dancefloor friendly territory. Still under a veil of ill-lit melodies, expertly programmed percussion and claps creates something for a more personal body move experience. Moving into 'Again' sees the expedition continuing journeying through the dancefloor, albeit in a deeper landscape where flickering extraterrestrial sounds watches you go along. In 'Backlit' you find the albums most organic moment, an ambient slow thoughtful walk through the consciousness of the producer - only to end up with the album's final moment; 'Freckles (beatless)'. Here we drift deeper off into slow ambient melodies with a comforting thoughtful bassline taking us to the end of our voyage.

Lapiana has composed an album where you get to travel with him on a sonic journey into the deepest corners of his mind, baring vulnerabilities as well as strengths. Intraverso carries a feeling of ancient atmosphere via its melodic language through its whole running time, perhaps since the foundation of the album is based on emotions and the mind. Thoughts, feelings and mental states that always have been with us, no matter the time and place. It is a mature debut album for an artist that proves he is willing to risk going into different areas than the tried and tested ground. One might say Intraverso is a record created for an introvert introspective dancer, willing to see what lies beyond that of which is visible at first glance.

Alessandro Cortini - Sonno

Alessandro Cortini is best known as the lead electronics performer in Nine Inch Nails' live unit.
His recordings under his own name have gained prominence in recent years and he has become
known as one of the pre-eminent Buchla masters in North America. Cortini makes a surprising
departure into the 202 on his debut album for Hospital Productions - 'Sonno'.
Sonno' was recorded in hotel rooms, using a Roland MC 202 through a delay pedal, recorded direct,
sometimes into a small portable speaker system. 'I liked to walk around the room with a handheld
recorder to hear where the sequence would sound better, turn on faucets, open doors or windows
to see how the ambient sounds would interact with the MC 202/delay/speaker sound. It was very
relaxing and liberating to make music this way...'
The result is a beautifully restrained yet oddly emotive album that's quite distinct from the overly
academic approach so often undertaken by hardware driven devotees.

Aril Brikha - Prisma

Prisma

2x12inchMULE253
Mule Musiq
22.05.2020

Repress

aril brikha seems to be on a roll. with “dance of a trillion stars” he just recently released a laid back ambient album full of melodic slow-motion enthusiasm.

now, shortly after, the berlin based producer drops “prisma” – a record for dancers, that is more on the deeper side of the dance floor.

“five to six years ago i decided to take a break from releasing on my own label art of vengeance in order to see if i had it in me to make a new album. so, i found myself having this initial break that was intended to be six months but went on for almost five years!

during this time, i made a lot of music that i kept coming back to but i never managed to finalise it. after the release i did with sebastian mullaert, mule musiq kept asking me for more music but i just found myself not capable to look at this body of work of almost 50 tracks and choose what to finish.

as i was not able to make decisions, i asked mule to listen to 25 tracks of the 50 and tell me what they liked. the result was the “dance of a trillion stars” album early this year.

once we finished the ambient album, only dance tracks were left of whom some are featured on “prisma”. instead of having your usual "album" story arc featuring ambient intros mixed with dance tracks, we choose to release two separate albums.”

aril brikha confesses about the secrets behind his newly hectic release schedule that made him publish two albums within half a year.

since the late 1990's his music melds techno and house that seduces club music enthusiasts around the world. influenced by different kinds of electronic music - from depeche mode and jean-michel jarre to robert hood and underground resistance – his music dances between straight up club tracks and deep unwound moving arrangements.

he already released ep’s on labels like kompakt, poker flat, his own label art of vengeance as well as an album for derrick may’s transmat imprint and a long-player for legendary peacefrog records.

after two mesmerizing ep’s for mule musiq in 2016 and early 2019, and the ambient album “dance of a trillion stars” earlier this year, he now releases an all dance track album loaded with eight arrangements, that he produced during night time on his old hardware equipment which he started using again after years of them being tucked away in his stockholm basement.

“i always make music to listen to. it is never intended for a dance floor. i guess i'm not much of a dj-tool producer, i'm more a "music" producer.”, he confesses about his work.

his new tunes, who seduce with warm chords and pleasant melodies, tell a different story. they are all propelling, while staying somehow calm and avoid average party hysteria. precisely produced tracks between house and techno, that favour the warm soul of dance music.

underneath the grooves each track rolls out some ambient vibes and veils of trance, dancing to delicate hi-hat shuffles and starry chords.

“my 90's stuff was very detroit influenced, not in the hard techno meaning but more towards the soulful part of it. my 2000 productions were very melodic driven and i was trying to see how far i can push a "trance" sound without making trance music.

the newer stuff is probably mix of both.” aril brikha says about “prisma” and its power to unite different generic zones into one charmingly warm dance journey. together with his predecessor “dance of a trillion stars” it introduces a touching insight into a producer’s soul, that did not get lost in his very own creation of melodic electronic sci-fi dance-not-dance music.

Scrolling thru the mists of time to 2004, a very different world indeed, and The Boats formed as an outlet for Kraftwerk-addicted composer Andrew Hargreaves and his pal, Craig Tattersall, fresh from a decade spent with cult post-rock group Hood and as half of The Remote Viewer, to pursue the ideas of post-rock, modern classical and lo-fi electronica along more intimate, personalised ginnels of folk and ambient music, with the cherry on their home-baked treats provided by vocals from another close friend, Elaine Reynolds.

Songs By The Sea was their wistful and charmingly humble introduction to the world; ten tracks balancing exquisitely pop-wise songwriting with gently pulsing, elusive electronics and a patina of crackle that became a real signature of their sound long before everyone else cottoned on and starting putting out pale imitations.

At the time, it received heavy rotation in our record shop, Pelicanneck, and was something of a shared secret between fans from Manchester to Japan via their home-town of Burnley, and still owns a certain section of our memory banks to this day that's often triggered by the smell of coffee, waffles and toasted rye bread in the morning just as much as smudged Hulme sunsets in summertime.

We don't want to gush about it too much but, listening to it now, and on a format the album always quietly yearned for, it's just chokingly nostalgic in its own, low-key and endearing style and leaves little doubt in our minds that Songs By The Sea is one of the finest ambient-pop records to emerge from this region.

Catching Flies - Silver Linings

‘One of our favourites’ iD Magazine

‘Mesmerizing’ The Guardian

‘Keep an eye on this guy!’ - Gilles Peterson

Catching Flies’ music draws from a wide-ranging palette of influences including jazz, soul, hip-hop, house and electronica and has previously seen him handpicked by Bonobo to provide support on his World Tour. Over the past few years, his music has gathered the support of Gilles Peterson, Annie Mac, Lauren Laverne, Julie Adenuga & Huw Stephens, critical acclaim from the likes of iD Magazine, The Guardian, Dazed & Confused, and Nowness, and a growing fanbase which has seen him perform both Live and DJ sets across the UK, Europe, the USA and Asia. This has culminated in over 60,000,000 streams to date.

Catching Flies is set to release debut album ‘Silver Linings’ on 5th July 2019. Containing shades of house and jazz, to hip-hop and electronica, ‘Silver Linings’ is a melodic mesh of bright electronics and intricate rhythms. It’s a beautiful, moving record, with sounds that unmistakably come straight from the heart.

Producer, multi-instrumentalist and DJ George King began Catching Flies in late 2012, when he recorded and self released his first two EPs. With huge radio and press support around the world - including multiple #1’s on Hype Machine, BBC Radio support from Gilles Peterson, Mary Anne Hobbs, Lauren Laverne, Tom Ravenscroft, Nemone, Annie Mac, Huw Stephens; praise from i-D, Dazed, The Guardian, Complex, Notion, The Line Of Best Fit, Clash, Dummy and more - he’s since attracted millions of listeners.

Against his instincts he signed with a big management agency and got talking to a label: it almost derailed his career. He explains “What I'd found so inspiring originally was the total freedom to make a tune on my own terms and just decide to put it out the next week. There was a hunger that came with that, and a sense of achievement from being the driving force, but as soon as I tampered with that ecosystem, it wasn't as exciting anymore”.

Touring with electronic music giant Bonobo - who also included him on his BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix - allowed him to watch up close someone who had taken a slow and steady path from tiny clubs in Brighton to arenas worldwide, and see it was possible to do without any compromise. After being teased through a succession of warmly received singles this past year, and seven years on from that first EP recorded and released from his bedroom, his debut album ‘Silver Linings’ is now ready to be revealed.

“It's taken me a while because I didn't want to speak until I had something to say. I wanted to make something positive, hopeful and colourful...The world isn't in the best place at the moment, and the last thing it needs is another dark and moody electronic record. I wanted ‘Silver Linings’ to be a scrapbook of the last three years. It’s definitely eclectic, and it’s supposed to be. Over three years a lot changes, your perspectives change, your tastes change; and I wanted to celebrate that by picking tracks that meant the most to me. One of my favourite things about making music is that it takes me right back to where I made it - the keyboard I used, the chair I was sitting on, the room I was in. It kind of teleports you back to a certain point in your life. A bit like a diary entry.”

Recalling those moments brings back a range of memories: ‘Satisfied’ began by being tapped out on a £15 keyboard bought from Kentish Town Cash Converters, ‘Yǔ’ was made in the mountains of China during a few days off from touring, while an evening on Hampstead Heath inspired ‘Kite Hill Theme’. Also featuring on the album is ‘New Gods,’ a collaboration with London’s bright stars Jay Prince and Oscar Jerome and the beautiful and meditative ‘Opals,’ inspired by the likes of Ryuichi Sakamoto and Alva Noto.

Catching Flies is already looking to the future, closing the first chapter in an exciting and inspiring story, ‘Silver Linings’ is only the beginning.

“A few weeks after I finished the album, I moved out of my house I made all the music in, so it feels like the closing of one chapter and the beginning of another. I can’t wait to make the next one now.”

Cale Sexton - Melondrama

Butter Sessions proudly presents the debut LP from label mainstay Cale Sexton. Last seen on the imprint with his club-minded EP East Link in 2016, Melondrama accumulates over 12 months work writing in studio.

Having taken a step back from live performance, the album is a marination of Sexton's musicianship, flexing his abilities as a bass-man, and incorporating live instrumentation and drenched arrangements to tell a vivid story. With the new found freedom of playing for himself, his inspired creations span electro-synth, deep milky way ambience and mutant drum machine funk. Produced as a solo act from the bass up, he's only accompanied on Previous Employee, with drums, synth and fx from Maryouss. His zonked imagination is brought to clarity by Corey Kikos' final mix, further animated via Ben Jones' sleeve design.

Full of emotion and adventure, the nine patiently durational earworms on Melondrama are a welcome antidote to the deluge of modern electronica that's designed for speed listening. Find a comfortable seat and let the mind travel.

Clan Caimán

12inchEM1177LP

06.03.2020

The music of Clan Caima´n is primitive and hypnotic. It is located in the pre-rock era and from there, it proposes a different evolutionary path for music from the 1950' s to present day. Like a different musical development in a parallel timeline. Gamelan, Hawaiian music, surf, exotica, rainforest or aquatic; these elements make up the palette which constructs a mystic and profound music that seeks ancestral connection.

Formed in 2016 by Argentinian musician, composer and producer Emilio Haro, looking to create music generated by group dynamics, Clan Caima´n differs from his past two solo albums ( 'Panora´mico' in 2007 and 'Estrambo´tico' in 2012, both on Radiaciones Armo´nicas) in that these were studio works and not meant to be played live.

The quintet's enigmatic sound is built upon the kalimbafo´n, an instrument created by Haro using several kalimbas, Diego Voloschin's wild and hypnotic percussion (no cymbals, no snare), Gonzalo Cordoba's lap steel and baritone guitar, Facundo Gomez's psychedelic guitar tones and Claudio Iuliano's dry and percussive bass sound. This debut album contains eight anachronistic and oddly familiar compositions that range from introspection to trance, tracing their own sonic landscape.

04.05.2018

Mikkel Metal returns to Copenhagen's Echocord this May with his new mini LP 'Just Enough Light', comprising six originals from the Danish artist. Copenhagen based producer and DJ Mikkel Metal has been a beacon of light in the Danish electronic music scene and further afield for nearly two decades now, with the Dub Techno imprint from his hometown, Echocord, being the predominant home for his output, whilst also releasing material on Cologne's Kompakt, Tartelet, Semantica and Avant Roots, a telling sign of the quality embodied in his work. Here though we see Mikkel deliver a mini album concept in the shape of 'Just Enough Light' and opener 'Awake' perfectly sets the tone with emotive, dynamically unfolding atmospherics, tension building bass drones and spiraling dub chords subtly easing us into the project. 'Bregnan' then stirs in some classing Dub-Techno tropes with billowing stab sequences, lumpy subs and off beat high hats carrying the hypnotic groove for six and a half minutes. 'Jech' then strips things back to an almost beatless amalgamation of murky chords and modulating synth whirrs. Opening the flip side of the release is 'Include' which embraces a brighter feel via ethereal pad swells, jazztinged synth melodies and bumpy 909 rhythms before 'Konkin' edges back into the eerie, brooding aesthetic with bubbling echoes, broken drums and menacing bass swells at its core. 'Restore' then closes the package on a stripped-back vibe, laying focus on an ever- eveolving singular dub chord to ebb and flow around thunderous subs, kicks and bright hats.

Juni is the first joint release by Charly Schoeppner and Sascha Demand, two seasoned veterans of experimental and improvisational music. They call themselves Giraffe. Their longstanding friendship has now propelled them into making Juni. Juni contains 11 short pieces that effortlessly flow in and out of each other. Intuitive, yet controlled, subdued, yet at times nervously ritualistic, percussive elements drive the tracks with melodic and harmonic impulses weaved around them. The record references abstract jazz and contemporary experimental music. It is an original snapshot of what makes contemporary experimental music tick.

Simon Haydo - Redux

Redux

12inchHVNX-300

16.03.2017

We live in the era of 'more'. We spend our days trying to keep up with a seemingly infinite range of links to follow, pictures to see, sounds to hear, places to go, objects to desire, events to anticipate, heroes to cherish and villains to loath. But rather than freeing, too many options can become paralyzing. Consequently, we often find ourselves frustrated because of the experiences we will never have... without even knowing what we really want. The same goes with music creation in digital environments. Too many possibilities can also mean a tyranny of the "what if...". In this light, celebrating 'less' becomes vital. And that's exactly what swedish producer and Studio Barnhus affiliate Simon Haydo does in 'Redux'. All of the sounds in the album's nine tracks come from just one synth: the Korg MS20. As Simon puts it, the idea was to "maximize the use of less, basically. Less gear, less effects, less input from other people, less everything."Using only between 2 and 6 channels for every track, the result is a stripped but surprisingly rich sound, that delineates spatial Techno vignettes coated with the unmistakable charac- ter of the MS20 filters. Even more interestingly, this restraint is not only applied gear-wise, but also from an emotional point of view. "Instead of involving my own feelings, I let the voice of the MS20 take care of it", says Simon. All this makes 'Redux' an expression of techno in its purest form. After all, it's a kind of music that has always gravitated around simplicity, austerity and, of course, the believe that the machines have their own soul.

Amnesia Scanner&Bill Kouligas

Lexachast

12inchPAN83-COL
PAN RECORDS
Release unknown

Lexachast is an ongoing collaborative work by Amnesia Scanner, Bill Kouligas & Harm van den Dorpel. Initially birthed as a joint, improvised performance between Amnesia Scanner and Kouligas at the ICA, London in 2015, it was later recreated and extended
with visual artist van den Dorpel into a 15-minute online-only audiovisual work – known simply as Lexachast.

Since then, it has expanded into a live show that has been performed at Transmediale, CTM Festival, Unsound Krakow & Adelaide, Next and LEV Festival and during Paris Fashion Week in collaboration with the brand Ottolinger. Now to be released on PAN, is a new document of Lexachast in its current, full-grown form.

Whilst broadly inspired by the experience derived from and exposure to algorithmic patterns as generated by visual artist Harm van den Dorpel’s specially-devised program, the work is a sonic reference to the fallouts of avant-EDM and cyberdrone.

This in turn is simultaneously mirrored by the perturbing visuals, created by a unique algorithm that sources and blends various
filtered imagery from DeviantArt and Flickr in real time – with a bias towards the NSFW, extreme banality, and ornamental melancholia.

The results were a perfect fit for the deliberate intention of non-intent, an anti-video of sorts, which ended up as a defining element for the project.

Philippe Cam - Rotterdam

Philippe Cam

Rotterdam

2x12inchTRAUMV233
Traum Schallplatten
06.09.2019

Philippe Cam is the Thomas Pynchon of the electronic music world. Little is known about him and only a couple of pictures have been put online since he emerged on this planet to write his first and only album18 years ago. We know he worked as a sailor and that’s it. If you dig deeper you might find out that he worked as a DJ in the beginning of the 90ies in Brussels and began to study electronic music there and also began to write music for theaters and ballets.

The American distributor Forced Exposure once wrote that about him: „Philipe Cam is a star in his own field. He is among the few people who have succeeded to write hypnotic dance music without a conventional beat still conveying a thrilling, dramatic feel. Cam has developed an accurate, intense and complex formula of modulation-techno. Starting with music similar to Pan Sonic in 1996, his music turned towards a more elegant form of minimal music. Abstract soundtracks lead to an organic form of music, which was equally influenced by modern techno as Wolfgang Voigt's Studio 1/Gas or Basic Channel/Maurizio. Cam's music corresponds heavily to the Cologne scene, where his music is appreciated and played throughout the clubs by the likes of Michael Mayer, Tobias Thomas and various other DJs as well as experimental djs from the A-musik corner.“

So what’s new with his music? Basically the art of filtering is still his passion. Maybe he can be less associated with techno and the themes of his new tracks emerge in a more distinctive pattern? Well that’s hard to say, we would comment the energy of his early techno days in Brussels have returned here in a fierce way with some oft he tracks. The rhythmic movements are classy and stick with you. Whereas other tracks look for a distinctive relaxation of some kind.

We are releasing the album as a double clear vinyl with cover art by Yvette Klein who also designed the cover for his Philippe Cam’s album 18 years ago. Graphics for "Rotterdam" come from Cologne designer Daniela Thiel. We also would like to thank the cultural department of Cologne for supporting us to finance the album and to see the artistic value in this piece of minimalism.

The album kicks off with the mellow and soothing "Cocoa Beach". A Gentle beat that moves like bodies swaying in the hot summer sun. The clock moves a step forward and then a step backward as evolution takes a rest.

"Manga" feels like an acceleration to the moon, the contemplative moments come in spurts and hide in the intervals of the chords which are on the loose. Philippe Cam is the most energetic person in the world when it comes to core activity, this is head banging stuff for the ambient lounge.

"Short Summer" is a heavy and violent recognition. As intensive as it is it knows when to stop and disappear. In the ear and brain of the listeners it leaves an indisputable echo which lingers on for minutes. We suggest not to make a pause but jump directly into "Vermillions Sands".

What can be said about into "Vermillions Sands"? Be prepared some Terry Riley might lure around the corner to offer you some oranges on a silver plate, but don’t eat them. This is luring and beautiful at the same time. Maybe the best ambient track ever written and yet who can ever venture to say that without making a fool of himself. "Vermillions Sands" comes in waves and they could be longer we think.

"Rotterdam" the home of Philippe Cam for a long time but not anymore. He moved away. So that changes the perspective. But when was the track written? "Rotterdam" seems mechanical and rusty and spooky and divided. This arrangement is very different to all the other tracks so far and is almost dub in style but way more fractured. A steady stop and go emerges. But the longer it runs the better it gets. At minute 6 the brain resets itself and tries to grasp what has happened so far, reconstruction as a result of its own phantasmic imagination and hardly true at all, wonderful. Applause included!

Here comes "Bis", a short episode of a track and before we can comment on it, it is already over.

"The Game" is a mule of a track. It has a quiet stubborn sequence that bites and kicks you in the back without any change in near sight. We can hear a voice whispering, which sounds like a miniature vocoder featuring the voice of a child calling out - never stopping. This is treadmill to some extend but starts to breathe towards the middle of the track and slowly changes perspective. In fact there are some changes taking place here which go beyond a sound design that works heavily on the stereo image. Stick with it and the experience will be a great one.

"Ultimate Fly For Halloway" somehow orchestrates how you might feel after you climbed a 8000 meter high mountain and reached the top. A rejoicing off a special kind. Lava for the ears. No cheerleader murder plot sorry.

"Last Track" is a perfect example of a true minimalistic pice of music that manages to make contact with other genres and does this with elegance, determination and a lot of soul.

key selling points: The key selling point is the fact that Philippe Cam once was referred to as one of the main protagonists of the minimal music scene along with Wolfgang Voigt's Studio 1/Gas and Basic Channel/Maurizio. A true artist with a vision which is very rare.

Philippe Cam has picked up the sound he was famous for but has developed it further without selling out to any genre and expectation that rules our daily business.

Exactly this is the strength of the album to create a vivid world of impressions by using instruments in a whole different way than all software developers would suggest.

"Rotterdam" is a piece of art that can set off a firework when you listen to it and it owes nothing to anyone.

The newly founded label Yalanci brings you its first release from the series of deceptive music.

This debuting EP gracefully portrays a universe of atmospheric, bass-driven compositions, conveying a sense of spatial charm in its reverb-drenched sequences. Forming an alliance between dark and beautiful, the sinister vocals that are pronouncing poetry in Azerbaijani language, blend in a percussive conversation with the rustles, chirps and whispers that create a flavorsome sense of both gemlike lucidity and perpetual movement. The pensive hypnotic ambiance of some pieces in this EP is tastefully assembled together with machine-like percussive dynamics of others. This spiritually charged release allures into an exploration of darkness and light, emptiness and fullness; luring you forward but seeming to take you back. You don't know what you don't know.

What makes the release so special is its expressiveness, the duo originally used the tape medium to explore various facets of their sound, resulting in an explorative release that feels both invigorating and reflective.
