Pilot UK
02.12.2021

Last seen sharing vinyl space with 100Hz and Voightmann on his own E Numbers imprint a couple of years back, Bobby O'Donnell resurfaces via a collaborative outing with Reeshy, a fellow Leeds resident who is seen by many as a rising star of the Yorkshire scene. In keeping with the PILOT label's breakbeat-driven, retro-futurist feel, each of the four cuts on show doff a cap to turn of the '90s rave culture. This is arguably best exemplified by weighty, funky and spacey bleep & breaks jam '2', though the arguably even more sub-heavy, UK garage influenced opener '1' comes a close second. Elsewhere, '3' delivers subtle nods towards Rob Gordon and Richard H Kirk's short-lived XON project (look it up, kids) while '4' is an acid-flecked warehouse shuffler.

FJAAK - Your Time is Ov3r

The pandemic has affected people in all sorts of different ways, but for FJAAK, life in lockdown led to one key realization: nothing in life is permanent, and what you do have can disappear at any moment, no matter how solid it may appear. That idea is at the core of the Berlin duo?s new EP, Your Time Is Ov3r, a four-track effort that sits somewhere between a rallying cry and a desperate primal scream. It?s not a coincidence that the record?s jagged, electro-flavored title track contains an ominous vocal refrain (?Hypnotize me?), born out of a time when FJAAK were looking for something, anything to make the days go by more quickly. Still, there?s more to Your Time Is Ov3r than emotional strife. The tracks here have been primed for the dancefloor, and are easily some of FJAAK?s sharpest productions to date. Unbridled EP opener ?Identity? fuses elements of ?90s rave techno with modern electro, the whole thing powered by the song?s menacingly crunchy bassline. ?Chunks? drops the hammer even harder, its heavy kick and low-end growl rumbling along like a vintage muscle car. And for those seeking something a bit more chaotic, the blaring sirens and frenzied breakbeats of 'Falcon Punch' come off like the club equivalent of a nuclear sub attack. Throughout Your Time Is Ov3r, FJAAK tiptoe right on the edge of completely losing control, and while their skilled hands prevent things from ever veering off the road and into a ditch, the music?s inherent sense of instability is undeniably exhilarating.

Various - Limited Series 10

The Limited Series reaches it's 10th release milestone with another 5 track compilation from some of our favourite artists at the moment. BPLS010 is a collection of leftfield UK Techno and broken beats for the dancefloor.

The opening track comes from Bristol based Yushh, head at the Pressure Dome Label, with "Fidget Spanner" featuring a hypnotic garage vocal looped over steppy techno drums, followed by Kincaid on the A2, who returns to the label after his latest split EP "Single Cell" on BP016, this time working with vocalist J. Caesar on the deep spoken word trip of "Inside".

Tristan Arp, one half of the Asa Tone project, also returns after his solo EP "Slip" on BP012 in 2020, with "Circling The Abyss" with a refreshing use of the Cello laid expertly on polyrhythmic drum patterns. PinballSpider makes their label debut with a warm and stripped back minimal ear worm on "In One Ear", while Johnny Hunter, Pleasure Club Label favourite, closes things off with the drum heavy percussion of "89' Brakes". The mood is Red. One Love. BP x

Luca Lozano - Boss Moves Ep 2x12"

Assertiveness can be virtue. Hence, 'Boss Moves' - Luca Lozano's debut for Running Back - is aptly titled. Generously spread over two vinyl plates, Lozano investigates the hybrid sound that once was embodied by groups like Future Sound of London, labels like Guerilla and DJs such as Sasha or Dave Angel. Blessed with the production of skills of today, the eyes of a tailor and the chemoreceptors of a perfumer, the Klasse Wrecks and Grafiti Tapes man delivers nine tracks that do it all: tribal, trance, breakbeats, house, 303s, bleeps, rave, dubby deepness and pianos. Like a trip down the 3d-visual-kaleidoscopic-artwork* hole or a snake charmer without a flute. Intake as a whole, record it to your tape desk and feel like tuning into on a pirate station in '95. Happiness is just around the bend.

*None of that can be found here. See explosive black-and-white sleeve for further reference.

Various - Waxworkz EP Volume One

TUNNEL005 continues where the first couple of Time Tunnel releases left off. 4 track EP showcasing various styles, all true to the sounds of yesteryear.
This has been bounded about on TP and promo for a few months now and has been getting some heavy rotation from DJs on Eruption as well as Jay Cunning on his weekly show.

Gridzone, who actually featured on the first couple of Time Tunnel releases gets the EP underway. Purely Science eases you in with a suspenseful pad section and rolling terrorist style bass but gives you a feeling that something big is coming, which indeed it is. When the amens drop you’d better find something to hold on to.

Label debutant Opius has been around for time. He is know for his uncompromising and relentless tracks. Which is exactly what he delivers here. An absolute dance floor destroyer of the highest order.

Another new face on the label is DJ Ande. His track sounds like it's straight out of the ’94 Ganja Records camp. Massive bass and some Vietnam sample action.

The EP is rounded off with a stunning remix from Eternity of Kingsize’s Dream Tracking. One for the hardcore heads, it has a real Hectic records / Kniteforce 1994 feel to it.

Various - The Remixes - Part One

Well, well, well. The anticipation surrounding this release has been massive since Jay Cunning first dropped the A side track on his show way back before the summer. Pressing plant delays have lead to the release being put back time and time again but now, it is finally here.
The one and only Blame from Moving Shadow / Good Looking / 720 / Hospital etc was approached by Time Tunnel to do a remix. Here is what he has to say about it:
“Time Tunnel Recordings challenged me to step back to my ‘Moving Shadow’ years, and create a remix just as I would’ve back in the day.
So I dusted off my old keyboards and sample disks. It was a lot of fun!”
The remix is MASSIVE. It holds its own alongside many 90’s rave anthems. Pianos, lush female vocals and Omni Trio stuttering type breaks. Do not sleep on this.

The AA side remix from Russia’s Ant To Be is no slouch and won’t let Blames A side remix take all the plaudits. This takes the original Gridzone track to new levels. It really is a thing of beauty.

Look out for Part Two of the remix series coming next year!

KiNK - Piano Power

Kink

Piano Power

12inchRB081
Running Back
16.12.2021

The return of…KiNK. His first original record after the latest album and a few bits here and there, is an ode to the miraculous grip that a piano still holds over almost any dance floor. Unmistakably titled „Piano Power Ep“, the Bulgarian hit factory does what it does best: infectious melodies, moving bass and gnarly acid lines as well as the ill beats around. Born out of studio rehearsals for live sets, „2 love U“ is a freestyle jam with regular collaborator Rachel Row (see Hand Made EP or „Follow The Step“): KiNK on keys and Rachel in the vocal booth results in pure positivism, energetic hooks and a certain pop magic. Think Rozalla, Bizarre Inc. or any other sign long and you are almost there. Instrumental included for the faint at heart.
„I Remember“ on the other hand, which is also available as one of KiNK’s beloved video workouts, is presented here as a „303 Mix“ that loses the classic house sample of the first version, in favor of - well, another classic dance music ingredient - the squelchy sound that DJ Pierre invented.
Last, but not least. „Raw“ is the kind of happy-go-lucky piano-bazooka that revokes the spirit of Baltimore’s production outfit Basement Boys in todays’ pagan parties. Using the minimum amount of music tools (lack of effects, volume changes creating dynamics and no more than four instruments), it als feels like KiNK’s reply to Herbert’s infamous dogma. If the ingredients are good enough, you don’t need any spices.

Patrick Conway - Cellular Housekeeping

In pairing words with art, the ESP Institute often does everything journalists hate. We drown the reader in hyperbole, abstractions as opposed to didactic or literal depictions, and paint the press release with superlatives that construct an existential struggle around the art and its conditions. To articulate our reasoning behind collaborating with the artist, or the synergy between their work and our catalogue, is sometimes so challenging that crossing that finish line is achingly delayed. Patrick Conway’s 2xLP 'Cellular Housekeeping', his fourth release with the label, is one of these works so monumentally exciting for us that we’ve strained over how to deliver with honor his art unto the masses. After the initial hurdle of visual representation (in this case handled with gusto by artist Hassan Rahim), how do we directly and intentionally talk about the art we deeply love, when in reality we’re largely guided by instinct? We explore many angles, often failing along the way, until finding a final click in the combination that unlocks the floodgates. With Patrick’s album, that elusive impetus revealed itself in a literary gem that both symbolized his aggressive, melancholic, romantic, and bleak overtones, as well as synchronized his work and our task with a metaphor so grand it justified putting these words to paper. In the deeply British poem of despair and hope, 'Comus: A Mask Presented at Ludlow Castle', John Milton immortalized the classic idiom of the “silver lining”, and we find comfort in this transaction between struggle and what the poet considered divine intervention. Our bout of procrastination that brewed a cloud over the art may too tout a silver lining, the time that’s elapsed clearing a path for the album to exist in its rightful place, as opposed to fighting for a voice at an overcrowded table. In hindsight, this final hurdle might have only existed because without it, there is no glory, no resolution, but as all the pieces click and we collectively cross the finish line, Patrick Conway’s once captive 'Cellular Housekeeping' is now truly released.

Quincy Nicholson - TechnoPrimitive EP

The A side and first single from the EP, “Spotless Hero,” personifies elegance and sophistication as demonstrated with Glenn Underground tickling the ivory on piano. The track is further undergirded by Quincy’s poly-rhythmic drum programming, which drives the track in a pocket reminiscent of his father’s seminal Sentimental Journey track from 98. The B side, “One Eyed Monster,” flips the script completely. It’s a return to sleaze with a driving acid track, that builds this gem to a fever pitch. Fans of Larry Heard, Anthony Nicholson more abstract work will savor this composition.

The Connection Machine - The Dream Tec Album

The third release on U-TRAX in 1993 was also a third debut, this time by Natasja Hagemeier and Jeroen Brandjes. Early in their career, they used several artist names, but became most commonly known as The Connection Machine. With their debut mini-album The Dream Tec Album they more or less described their style: dreamy techno. It became an instant Dutch techno classic and U-TRAX is proud and delighted to offer a fully remastered re-release, including three never before released bonus tracks (one of which is digital-only).

Natasja and Jeroen resided in Utrecht back in the 90s. In 1991 they assembled all their ideas and recorded the track "24 Hours" with DJ Paradize. Soon after this experience, they started to buy their own gear, all strictly MIDI (which wasn't too obvious in those days). In their early recording years, they had three producer-names (Syndrome, The Connection Machine and Bitch&Bites), that were all collected under the The Utroid Machine Missions umbrella, which was used for their debut on U-TRAX.

All tracks on The Dream Tec Album are The Connection Machine's earliest works, from the 1991/1992 years.

"An Overflow of the Mind" is a beautiful, dreamy track with almost divine sounds and strange voice-samples that serves perfectly as an introduction to their entire repertoire.

Their first production was "24 Hours", and what a brilliant one it is! A well-known jazz-musician talks about a "24 hour party going on", on top of a sinister and trancey rug, woven of sampled sounds from pioneers in electronic music and nailed down to the floor with a deep pounding bassdrum. At the time they made this track, 141 bpm was unbelievably fast...

"Evilish Cosmos" is all about a very sad and personal emotion, so everything we say about it will be absolutely wrong. Just listen to the meandering piano line, distorted voice samples - and feel it.

The first bonus track on this release is "Recognized Pain", which was intended to be part of the original The Dream Tec Album. It had appeared on the Phuture Classical Section C cassette in 1993, on the famous Drome Tapes label that formed the roots of U-TRAX. It truly is an amazing track: pure sonic terror with haunting rhythms, psychedelic synth lines and shards of voice samples that make the listener feel slightly uncomfortable.

"X_Manray" is many electronic music lover's favorite track. It is sooo deep that it is hard not to get hypnotized by it. Warm strings are coupled with deep beats that show up and disappear every now and then. Could serve perfectly to start off any DJ's set, as long as she or he has the guts.

Though "Braindrain" is probably the most danceable track on this album, it is carefully designed to tease the listener. Everything in this track drops in too late and every tone, melody or loop last exactly a few bars too long. Designed as a DJ-teaser and so it is.

The second bonus track, "Cafe d'Anvers", is another previously unreleased work, of which unfortunately no master recording was saved. All that is left, as far as we know, was an old VHS Hifi tape from the U-TRAX Archives. And that is where this bonus track was taken from. Mastering engineer Thee J Johanz managed to restore the quality of the recording somewhat, while at the same time maintaining its dark, clubby sound, a tribute to the famous club of the track's name in Antwerp, Belgium.

"Dream Affected Dream" is one of the most recent productions on this album. It was recorded with CNN playing live on top of it. At this exact moment, CNN was having an interview with David Koresh, the leader of the infamous Branch Davidians sect from Waco, Texas, while they were under siege by an armed police force. Natasja and Jeroen were just ready to record Dream Affected Dream, and spontaneously decided to mix in the audio from CNN. Not very long after that, the cult members set fire to themselves. A very strange and oddly funky track, that also serves as a time-document.

The final track is another bonus track. Like Cafe d'Anvers, "Voight-Kampff" is taken from on old U-TRAX VHS Hifi tape and masterfully mastered into a lovely relaxed dreamtech piece. Very suitable to start the Sunday after a long night of clubbing. This track is available for free to buyers of the complete digital album only.

Original release date: July 1993.

Crash Party - Toxic Funk Vol. 5

Breakbeat Paradise Recording is back with the fifth installment of the epic Toxic Funk – 7" donut series.
For the next 45 we have called upon Crash Party (one half of Hardly Subtle with Aldo Vanucci) to sprinkle his production magic over 2 funked up, sample led tracks to get any dancefloor moving!

Crash Party dropped his debut EP on the legendary Ghetto Funk label, with follow up EPs on Scour Records and Cuttin' It Fine Recordings. He's remixed tracks on the U.S. based labels Dead2Me and Roaring City.
Crash Party's crowning glory, to date, was collaborating with Dutty Moonshine Big Band on the #metoo alternative anthem "Fever", from their top 40 album "City Of Sin"

We are chuffed to have Crash Party #crashtheparty with these 2 slices of breakbeat funk to get heads nodding and feet tapping.

Following up on Second Hand Audio's Vol. 4 release in the series, you are in store for some skilled sample selections, some classic funky breaks and a perfectly timed Hip-Hop vocals.

The lead track, Dirty Glass, sees the combination of "One Way Glass" with "Dirt Off Your Shoulder" blended together with extra beats and grooves for dancefloor flavour...
A modern-day classic in the making!

On the flip side we go deeper into the world of funk with World Gone Def, a skilled re-editing of "People Make The World Go Round" as the main music accompaniment to the vocals of Hip-Hop anthem "Release Yo Delf". Add to this extra funky beats, vocal samples and a smidge of rock guitar sampling for good measure!

As the electronic funk scene changes and adapts, some things remain best untouched. The sample-based beats and grooves is here to stay and the sound of the Old Skool is still as fresh as it comes.

Once again Breakbeat Paradise Recordings is on point to deliver you the funkiest soul and breaks available anywhere out there…

Nervous Horizon is happy to present 'Sogno EP', the new project by label co-owner Guglielmo Barzacchini, aka TSVI. Embarking on a journey inside the mind's most deep and intricate illusions and hallucinations, 'Sogno EP' is an exploration into various different types of dream states and altered states of consciousness. Characterised by intricate rhythms, slower beats inspired by techno, dancehall and little to no melodies, the record features Italian ASMR and spoken word to enhance the hazy and hypnotic mood permeating throughout. Taking a close look at his own states of unconsciousness and channelling them into his musical creation, TSVI dives into the abstract and eerie worlds of the subconscious with a project inspired by surreal dreamscapes, trance states and the concept of shadow work, in which each track explores a different aspect of the depth of the human psyche.

Liftin Spirit

* The original sister label to Ram Records from the old Ram HQ studio in Essex, Liftin Spirit Records now celebrates it’s 25th year with a special ‘RELOADED’ limited vinyl series of remastered classics, alongside rare and previously unreleased tracks since the beginning in1992.

* DATs from artists such as Andy C, Ant Miles, Shimon, Joint Venture, Interrogator and Red One have been located in the archives. Also from the Ram & Liftin HQ came tracks for the Deep Seven label in 1993 and all these rare DAT masters have been located and now re-cut by Simon, the original Ram & Liftin vinyl masterer at ‘The Exchange’. Initially, Deep Seven remasters will present on a printed white label and unreleased tracks will have a black label.

* Expansion (Remix 1 & 2): Andy C and Ant Miles's penultimate releases prior the the inception of Ram Records were released on local label ‘Out Of Romford’. Under their usual guise as 'Desired State', ‘Expansion' was originally the B side to their Hardcore smasher ‘Dance The Dream’. Not long after, two further remixes (Remix 1 & 2) were created for the flip side to the ‘Dance The Dream’ Remix that followed. Both feature here in all their original Hardcore glory. Remastered from the original DAT for 2021, they continue as part of the Liftin Spirit Reloaded series on limited heavy weight vinyl.
Turn On: This track was Andy C and Ant Miles’s first ever collaboration together as Desired State, from what eventually became the Ram HQ studio in Hornchurch, Essex. Originally signed to Karma Records in 1991, it was oddly licensed to a label in the States and returned to the UK as an import! The track did so well, even as a higher priced import, it gave the pair the encouragement to continue on their path in the studio together and the rest is history as they say. Remastered from the original DAT once again, this one holds a special place in their heart.
Move Your Body: This particular track was never released to the masses, originally made way back in 1991, it was recently located on a DAT tape and has been brought into the the Liftin Spirit Reloaded series as a special unreleased bonus track.
