After last year's extroverted and funky album "Be Who You Wanna Be," Stef Kamil Carlens presents a more introspective double album recorded with Nel Ponsaers and Rahmat Emonds. Featuring 14 songs—some of his own compositions and very surprising covers or reinterpretations—this album emphasizes lyrics, vocals, and a band sound primarily driven by acoustic instruments. Once again, it stands as a key addition to the already very eclectic catalog of one of Belgium’s most versatile and productive artists. Stef Kamil Carlens & The Poem will tour starting in October 2025.

Having worked together on his 2024 album Colours & Light, Project Gemini aka Paul Osborne joins forces once again with Wendy Martinez, French singer and composer, and also part of renowned psych-girl group Gloria on a new collaborative EP. Landing on Mr Bongo, ‘Time Stands Still / Le temps s'arrête’ is a sonic exploration that shows a shared love of the progressive music emanating out of France in the ‘60s and ‘70s and the celebrated film soundtrack composers of the time. A more melodic and romantic excursion than Paul’s previous recordings, this EP marries his richly textured, cinematic psych rock with Martinez’s captivating vocal presence.

A body of work born during the period Paul was finishing up his last LP Colours & Light, he penned an album’s worth of instrumental library-style music and had the idea of having Wendy add vocals and lyrics to a selection of them. The instrumental record got scrapped, but thankfully ‘Time Stands Still’ grew out of it.

Paul was a fan of Wendy’s work as both a solo artist and in the band Gloria, and her inclusion on the Project Gemini tracks ‘Entre chien et loup’ & ‘Extra Nuit’ showed a clear synergy to their musical approaches and sounds. For ‘Time Stands Still’ he sent over instrumental tracks one by one, with Wendy taking time to find melodies and French poetry she was happy with and returning her ideas from her home just outside of Lyon.

Drawing inspiration from French soundtrack composers such as François de Roubaix, Frances Lai and Michel Colombier, as well as French female artists including Léonie and Laurence Vanay, these productions are a contemporary love letter to this sound, not a homage. Mixing psych, folk, chanson, and French new wave, it’s music that pulls you in deeper, with groove, grit and passion at its core.

'Je n'ai plus peur' kicks things off with a sultry energy. It’s a psych-funk production drenched in attitude, swagger, and edge, which nods to the left-field side of Serge Gainsbourg’s music. Elsewhere, 'Âme contre âme' feels like the opener from a forgotten new-wave film, managing to be at both beautiful yet sinister and longing. 'The Crawler' could be incidental music from the same film, with Wendy using her voice as an instrument layering the backing track as Paul's bass takes centre stage. The ghostly spoken word of 'Ce qui est intact' echoes a funky version of what the Théâtre du Chêne Noir d'Avignon may have recorded.

A transportive journey ‘Time Stands Still’ is nostalgic yet new in the same smoke-filled breath. Fuzzed-up guitars and driving basslines meld with folk-leaning organs and mellotron vibrations to give that eerie, otherworldly edge. All of which are seasoned by the sensuous, layered vocal tones of Wendy Martinez, alongside crisp drums from Tony Coote and considered percussive touches by Paul Elliot.

Following the success of the 12” “Trip To Your Mind (The Reworks)”—where Delfonic and LTJ Xperience both brought their own magic to Hudson People’s disco/jazz-funk anthem—we’re back with a fresh twist: DJ Friction steps in for an official 7” rework, breathing new life into this cult classic in his own unmistakable style.

For those who’ve been following the story, you know “Trip To Your Mind” is a true favorite among DJs and collectors since decades, from its creative inception by the writer Reginald Hudson with the GI funk band Body Heat, to the original recording taking place in the late 70s in London that eventually paved the way for disco lovers to produce this recent string of reworks.

Where the 12” reworks stretched out the groove with extended intros and club-friendly builds, Friction’s version keeps things tight and energetic. He adds his own drums, claps, synth touches, and some new vocal layers—combining the standout parts from both the original mix and the classic UK remix. The result is a punchy new take that’s perfect for DJs who want maximum impact in a short format, but still want all the funk and psychedelic flavor that’s made this song a dancefloor staple for decades.

And for collectors? The original 7” of “Trip To Your Mind” is notoriously hard to find—and pricey when it turns up. This new release finally makes it easy to spin a fresh, fully licensed version on 7” wax, expertly mastered for today’s systems.

The collaborative A-side begins with the dynamic title-track, 'Cross Passage', a proactively future-facing number packing the kind of utopian drive that used to define the original techno sound. A highly cinematic narrative boasting Detroit-style vision and epic breath, 'Cross Passage' builds bridges between hi-tech elation and organic integration, transcending mere functionality to push back and expand the limits of techno as a deep communication vessel between the individual and the mass. Firing off like a binary script gone astray, 'Fibre Axis' takes us on a further bumpy ride across shape-shifting interfaces and blurred-out digital scapes, via abrupt pixel landslides and fractured 3D renderings. Side-B finds each producer dishing out a slice of his/her own musical idiom. Polygonia strikes first with the pulsating 'Voltage Blues' - a mesmeric roller cut from pure eerie synth algebra, boundary-pushing abstraction and surgical but experimental-leaning rhythmic assault. Erik K Skodvin's feature-length score to Thomas Roth's thriller "Schächten" feels like the epitome of all his musical projects, conjuring a dark cinematic trip through 1960's post-WWII Vienna in a film that touches on topics such as law, justice & revenge.

Releasing a soundtrack as a stand-alone album can be challenging; and "Schächten" is by no means a typical listening experience. The record contains 24 more or less short pieces evolving through dramatic movements, underlaying menace and deep emotive scenes. One thing that stands out is the linear atmosphere throughout the story which creates a wholeness that keeps your attention to the very end. Set in wintery Austrian landscapes in dimly saturated colours, the film's dramatic events with dark political undertones feels like a perfect situation for Skodvin's atmospheric collages - perhaps sounding closer than ever to his early works as Svarte Greiner or Deaf Center. Cello, violin, piano, analogue synth and plenty of hardly recognizable instrumentation come together in a record that feels very organic in its subdued tones. The score also features percussion by Andrea Belfi as well as a Chopin piano interpretation by Kelly Wyse to the bizarrely schizophrenic piece "Judenfreund".

With the contemporary world sliding into darkness again, listening to the soundtrack feels like coming to terms with ones own anxieties - something that in the end comes through as a cleansing experience. As quoted in the film "Everyone is their own devil. And we make this world our hell".

Short synopsis : "Vienna 1960s - The young Jewish business man Victor has to witness how the prosecution of a Nazi crime against his family fails. The political and legal system is still virtually run by former Nazis with large parts of society being entangled in the past. When Victor also loses his grief ridden father and his girlfriend’s family opposes their relationship and his identity, Victor begins to loose faith in formal justice and takes matters in his own hands."

Ska was the name given to the music that came out of Jamaica between 1961/66.Based on the American R&B and Doo Wop records that the Sound Systems in Kingston Town used to play.But the American records style started to mellow out while the Jamaicans preferred a more upbeat sound.So the Sound System boss's became record producers to cater for this demand.Sir 'Coxonne'Dodd and Duke Reid led the way putting the top musicians on the island in the studio to make music,its subtle twist that had an emphasis placed on the offbeat made the music unmistakably Jamaican.
W.I.R.L Records(West India Records Limited) was set up by the Jamaican politician Edward Seaga in the late 1950's.He had supervised the recording of an album of Ethnic Jamaican music and needed an outlet for its eventual release.In 1962 the year of Jamaican Independence ,Seaga became a member of Parliament, representing the Jamaican Labour Party and then decided to sell the label to Bryon Lee,the sale led to a name change from W.I.R.L to Dynamic Sounds.

Emily A. Sprague's Cloud Time traces an audio-spiritual journey through time and place, recorded across a long-awaited debut tour of Japan in the fall of 2024. Compiled from environmental improvisations captured in and for the moment, material at once welcoming, responsive, and inimitable, the album distills a voyage guided by psychic wayfaring, unbound presence, and activating performance for a reciprocal exchange with space, listener, and each fully engaged instant. The Japanese tour documented on Cloud Time held an almost mythic significance for Sprague, taking on properties of her own sonic white whale. After many near-departures and dropped plans to play in the country, "the empty spaces of cancelled trips and forgotten music turned into strange little misty spirits that I felt followed by," she says. "When I began preparing for the tour, I couldn't shake a sense that the invitation to Japan was more about opening myself up to this new place instead of bringing something into it tightly under my control. Improvisation has always been such a pillar in my music practice, and I really wanted to meet the country, spaces and people through that process." To amplify these intuitive whispers on-stage, Sprague reimagined her time-tested live rig, designed to be as free from error as possible, as a looser, more flexible set up that would allow her to interface with what was essentially a blank sonic canvas every night. Each performance became a collaboration between environment and instinct, Sprague processing the events, energies, and emotions informing the evening through her new sound ecosystem, and projecting an entirely present and unique version of herself to each open-eared and hearted crowd. "It was very much more than just an act of playing for me, but a total experience of time and place," she says. The seven long-form pieces that plot the course of Cloud Time, excerpted from over eight hours of recordings archived on the artist's on-stage recorder and generously shared on the album with no additional mixing and only minimal editing, invite listeners to become still in these deep-rooted moments of presence as the album moves from city to city, venue to venue. Cloud Time chronicles material recorded at each tour stop, Sprague selecting and sequencing the album around mood-based storytelling more so than linear chronology. "I tried to make the whole album flow in the way that any one of the complete live performances did," she explains, "while also keeping the spirit of the whole thing as a journey." The result is equal parts travelog, love letter, and impressionistic collage channeled from the potent ferment of a now encased in the glowing amber of memory. Intrinsically inspired by kankyo ongaku, an environmental music philosophy, known both in and widely outside of Japan that tunes into the similarly expansive ethos as Pauline Oliveros' deep listening practice and posits the listener as composer, Cloud Time is ambient music that seems to be listening right back, grounded in heartfelt synthesized frequencies that abundantly hold and heal. Pieces like "Nagoya," "Tokyo 1," and the ten minute "Matsumoto" in particular hum with the atomic resonance of gently tended landscapes, offering space for tuning way in and dropping far out from perspectives that stifle and bind. Cloud Time is an invitation to embrace each moment as both fleeting and eternal, floating by with nothing to grasp onto and absolutely everything to gain. The exercise in acceptance and letting go that Sprague practiced throughout the tour deeply impacted her understanding of self as both a guest and venerable performer. "The process of loving wherever I am, being present and focusing on a clear channel of communication for mind and emotion, rooted so deeply in respect for the space, those within it, and myself, ended up being profoundly healing," she says. "My vision and hope is that this album can be released as a gift back to anyone who either was or wasn't there. A cloud time of life passing by." Emily A. In syrupy slow pursuit of a strong 2023 debut, Yungwebster's somnolent sequel is bolstered by pitch-perfect production from Space Afrika and Nathan Melja, who vaporise the rapper's auto-tuned post-Future drawl with euphoric orchestral drones, brittle micro-trap beats and weightless pads.

Over a decade ago at this point, Future released 'Codeine Crazy', the decelerated finale of 'Monster', one of his best-loved mixtapes. The track neatly summarised themes the Atlanta rapper had been circling for years at that point, layering his slurred, lean-dizzy rhymes over producer TM88's rubbery, melancholy synths. "Take all my problems and drink out the bottle," he moaned robotically, using the track's minor key bounce to represent the crushing delirium that followed fame and its tasting menu of intoxicants. It's still Future's high water mark creatively, and its traces can be observed in a full spectrum of contemporary sounds, from 6LACK's downtrodden, self-aware R&B to Lil Uzi Vert's feverish trap. But it's Yungwebster who's taken the haze to its logical conclusion, reimagining the Magic City-sculpted bumps as hypnagogic Actavis- 'n Xanax-hued ambient music. You could argue it was bound to happen - the more you sip, the slower it gets - and plays as a cracked mirror to cloud rap's long-smoked hybrid of Southern psychedelia and post-OutKast eccentricity.

Webster's opiated POV is clearer than ever before on 'II'. Just peep the cracks in his voice on the Space Afrika-produced opener 'Skyfall' as he coughs and splutters over watery samples, booming subs and SA's patented collage of soundtrack-ready strings and sirens. Presented at regular speed and in chipmunked form, it sets the pace for an album that, like its predecessor, constantly fucks with the timeline, pitching the whole master into doubletime or slowing it down to a crawl to present a curved, inebriated narrative rather than a straight line. Even without the tempo switches, Webster singles out beats that accent his warbled rhymes that sound as if they'll fall apart at any moment. French DJ and producer Nathan Melja backs 'Disheveled' with Black Ark-styled oscillations and airlock'd echoes, filtering the bassline until it almost disappears entirely; with room to breathe, Webster's able to take the lead - you might not be able to pick out the words, not entirely at least, but you get the message.

In fact it's Webster's voice that's the revelation on 'II' - with a coherent mix from producer tnotsobad, the nuances and fluttering tonalities emerge more vividly than they have before. It makes the flip between the regular speed and fast on 'Txts Red on iMessage' a textural decision, the different pace shifting the warbled cadences so Webster's voice becomes far more important than the additional elements. And on the album's Space Afrika-produced eight-minute centerpiece 'Crochet / I Swear', Webster's mumbled bio-mechanical whines create a much-needed foil for the decelerated boom-clack and suspended save room ambience. We get to encounter a personality here, not just an aesthetic, so as the album moves into its twilit fourth side, the beatless, voice-led somniferousness of 'YA SA' and ululating 'Phone' come off like a descent into tranquillised sedation. Rap has rarely sounded so chimeric.

Ornette Coleman, who died in June 2015 from cardiac arrest, must be counted as one of the most influential musicians in the jazz genre. His importance does not only lie in his ground-breaking recordings in the late Fifties and early Sixties, but lies more significantly in the educational effect of his work – in the fact that he always went beyond himself to the very end.

Just a little more than a month after his ground-breaking release "Free Jazz", Coleman recorded the present album, in which he perhaps distanced himself somewhat from the conceptual idea, but still guided his quartet to ever more richness of detail and creativity. "Ornette!" was the first recording with bass-player Scott LaFaro and Coleman, and the difference in approach between LaFaro and Charlie Haden is noticeable from the very first note of "W.R.U.". His playing is more direct and agile, and one can hear how he drives Coleman and Don Cherry actively onwards and more aggressively than Haden’s warm, languid phrasing.

The tracks, with titles that are taken from the works of Sigmund Freud, are all gems and serve as a wonderful starting point for the musicians’ improvisations. By now, Coleman felt himself comfortable in lengthy pieces, and neither he nor his fellow musicians had trouble in filling out time, never once lacking for new ideas. Ed Blackwell deserves a special mention – he shows himself here at his very best. "Ornette!" is a superb release and an absolute must for all fans of Coleman and creative, improvised music in general.

Zelienople frontman Matt Christensen returns to Miasmah with Constant Green - a record of reverberant country inspired songs that puts the weight somewhere between Johnny Cash and Slowdive. Matt pours out his soul through flashes of life - small and large. His voice roaming over the guitars in a way which feels like a floating poetic deluge.

Appearing fresh from last years Zelienople album Hold You Up, Matt has made a very personal record that arrives as perfectly as it could be. It is full of beautiful sparse moments that capture the feeling of time standing still while simultaneously flashing in front of your eyes. As a child of the 70ies, growing up with country influenced AM rock on the radio, riding around in cars without seatbelts, Matt creates this nostalgic feeling of free riding through the city streets at dusk : a dream world where one can see green as a symbol for humanity and optimism. Not to say the album doesn't have it's share of darkness. Christensen always lingers deep in melancholy, driving his fears and anxieties out through music.

Visions of being able to move anywhere, picking his mother up from jail, family matters, change, the small things in life - all outtakes from what he sings about. Although it's hard to pick up on unless you really listen, as his ramblings can at one moment be fully clear while in the next drowned or muffled - becoming a mere meditative element to the music. Steady collaborators Brian Harding and Eric Eleazer from Zelienople accompanies on pedal steel and keys to further fill the sound into a warm dream, following in the footsteps of Matt ́s previous Miasmah album Honeymoons (2016). That said, while Honeymoons used drum machines and vast open spaces, Constant Green is another step closer towards the classic singer-songwriter folklore. Timeless gold from an artist that never stops creating.

Turning Into Small, the second album by shoegaze band All Natural Lemon & Lime Flavors from New Jersey, originally released in 1998 on local label Gern Blandsten,
is now being reissued on both CD and vinyl.

Formed in the mid-90s, All Natural Lemon & Lime Flavors were deeply influenced by UK shoegaze and alternative rock—most notably My Bloody Valentine—while
pursuing a uniquely experimental sound within the US emo and indie scenes. Their innovative spirit reached full bloom on Turning Into Small, which remains their
final album to date.

One of the standout tracks is the nearly eight-minute-long “Your Imagination,” a spacious sonic landscape that draws listeners into deep immersion.

American standard-bearers for glam rock and important precursors to punk rock, New York Dolls reunited (at the personal request of longtime fan Morrissey) nearly three decades after their early-1970s heyday. Original Dolls David Johansen and Syl Sylvain still have all the sass and swagger of their prime on CAUSE I SEZ SO. Todd Rundgren had helmed the band's debut and returns in the same capacity for this 2009 Atco album, helping the quintet push its sonic envelope a bit beyond the Stonesy racket of yore. The Something Rain was recorded in bursts over approximately a year, from May 2010 to August 2011 and mixed in September- October 2011. It was a time of experimentation, of searching and honing down a shape and sound. Of the twenty or so ideas they set out with, nine songs became the final album.

Es gab eine Zeit - nennen wir sie Saturn-Rückkehr, nennen wir sie die frühen 90er Jahre, nennen wir sie den letzten Atemzug, bevor das Internet alles verschlang - als wir von den Zero Boys uns plötzlich einer ganz anderen Art von Feuer gegenüberstanden. Wir waren aus unserer Hardcore-Haut herausgewachsen - nicht aus Ablehnung, sondern aus einer Weiterentwicklung heraus. Wir waren unruhig. Songs kamen nicht mehr in Ausbrüchen purer Geschwindigkeit; sie verdrehten sich, dehnten sich aus, stellten Fragen. Struktur war nicht mehr der Feind. Wir ließen die Songs atmen, und im Gegenzug erzählten sie uns Dinge, die wir nicht erwartet hatten. Die hier versammelten Songs aus ,Make It Stop" (1991) und ,The Heimlich Maneuver" (1992) fangen diesen Moment ein. Diese beiden Alben, die innerhalb eines Jahres entstanden sind, sind Dokumente einer Zeit, in der wir unserem Instinkt folgten - die Grenzen unseres eigenen Sounds ausloteten und persönliche spirituelle Erkundungen durch den Fuzz und die Wut hindurchflochten. Es war nicht religiös. Es war eine Suche. Der Versuch, das Selbst im Lärm der Welt zu finden. Der Versuch, ehrlich über Verwirrung, Widerstand und die Teile von uns selbst zu sprechen, die nicht so einfach in Slogans oder Genres passen. Damals wussten wir, dass wir uns veränderten, aber wir wussten nicht, in welche Richtung. Jetzt, Jahrzehnte später, offenbart das Zurückhören etwas Klareres. Diese Songs - textlich, musikalisch, emotional - fühlen sich heute dringlicher an als damals. Die politischen Aussagen sind gut gealtert, was sowohl ein Triumph als auch eine Tragödie ist. Was wir in einem Moment kreativer Verbrennung geschrieben haben, klingt jetzt wie Warnsignale - über Institutionen, über Gewalt, über das stille Bedürfnis nach Sinn unter all dem. Americana meets Ennio Morricone: Das fünfte Album von Other Lives

Fünf Jahre nach ihrem Vorgängeralbum "For Their Love" veröffentlicht die Indie-Folk-Rock-Band Other Lives ihr fünftes und passend betiteltes Album "Volume V". Der Titel markiert das neueste Kapitel in der fortlaufenden Geschichte von Other Lives, einem Album von großartiger musikalischer und emotionaler Tiefe. Schon die ersten Töne des Eröffnungsstücks "Mystic" machen deutlich, dass die filmische Bandbreite ihrer Arrangements und Melodien um mehrere dynamische Stufen zugenommen hat, mit einer vollen orchestrierten Reichweite und einer gewaltigen Dramatik in den acht Songs und zwei Instrumentalstücken des Albums. Auch wenn man sowieso bald wieder ran muss - nur für einen Moment spüren, die Macht zu haben alles lahm zu legen, hörten einfach alle auf: Wertschöpfung, Broligarchie, Kaufland, Deutschland. pogendroblem haben sich also nochmal zusammengerauft und ein neues Album gemacht. Drei Jahre für ein neues Album? In der Tat: Great Resignation. Oder zu wenig die Brotjobs gekündigt? Und wenn sie die Arbeit so hassen, warum haben sich pogendroblem dann noch weiter in die Musikindustrie reinbegeben? Widersprüche schärfen und aushalten. Ambiguitätstoleranz. Nachdem AWINHSMK Ende 2022 bei Audiolith erschien, ging es für die Band wild hin- und her zwischen Pop-Festivals, Punkbühnen, Preisverleihungen und Solishows für selbstverwaltete Kulturzentren oder gegen die extreme Rechte. Nun der Nachfolger Great Resignation bei Kidnap. Das Schulterklopfen der Kulturförderung darf natürlich auch nicht fehlen. Zwölf Tracks auf 1:22 bis 2:30. Ästhetisch nochmal diversifiziert und dennoch aus einem Guss, entstanden unter Regie von Gregor Hennig im Studio Nord Bremen, gemischt von Daniel Roesberg und gemastert von Christian Bethge. Musikalisch klarer und pointierter als zuvor. Obviously punk, poppige Niedlichkeit, Garage Vibes, bisschen Hamburger Schule, bisschen Kraut, etwas düsterere Gitarren und natürlich Brotschneidemaschine durch FX geballert. Wahrscheinlich Post-Punk. Doch Achtung, das ist keine Neue Neue Deutsche Welle! Große Resignation! Die große Traurigkeit zieht sich durch die Platte hindurch, auch in den auf den ersten Blick lustigen Liedern. Denn hier sind sich pogendroblem treu geblieben, es geht um absurde Alltagsgeschichten, um Subjektivierung, die nicht mehr zu funktionieren scheint. Um Fragmentierung von Gesellschaft, Arbeitsbeziehungen, der Linken. Wie durch die Zeit der Monster (Antonio Gramsci) navigieren, fragen pogendroblem. Wie weiter machen gegen Faschisierung und Klimakrise? Lösungsansätze werden diskutiert und ausprobiert. Es ist klar: Es kann nicht immer so weitergehen.

"When Are You Leaving?" ist das zweite Album des in Los Angeles lebenden koreanisch-amerikanischen Künstlers NoSo (Baek Hwong) und markiert eine kühne Entwicklung sowohl im Sound als auch in der Erzählweise. Während sein Debütalbum "Stay Proud of Me" aus dem Jahr 2022 eine zutiefst ernste Stimme vorstellte, die sich mit Identität und Zugehörigkeit auseinandersetzt und dafür Lob von NPR's "All Songs Considered", Paste, The Guardian sowie einen umwerfenden Auftritt bei "Tiny Desk" erntete, wendet sich der Nachfolger mit noch größerer Klarheit und Zuversicht nach innen.
Mit einer lebendigen Palette aus Disco-Grooves, zackigen Gitarren und atmosphärischen Balladen fängt NoSo die stille Kraft des Loslassens ein - von zerbrochenen Beziehungen, alten Narrativen und dem Bedürfnis, von anderen verstanden zu werden. Das Album ist reich an emotionalen Kontrasten: schwierige Wahrheiten, verpackt in eine verträumte Produktion, Verletzlichkeit, gepaart mit der Selbstsicherheit eines Künstlers, der ganz zu sich selbst findet.
Das selbst produzierte und klanglich furchtlose "When Are You Leaving?" ist eine Coming-of-Age-Platte für alle, die noch dabei sind, erwachsen zu werden, und ein Beweis dafür, dass NoSo zu den überzeugendsten Songwritern seiner Generation gehört.

Gravitate, in case you didn't know, is yet another label from James Burnham aka Burnski aka Instinct. It's hard to keep up with the man's unrelenting yet brilliant work rate, but worth making the effort to do so if you like minimal, tech and garage. The latest on this fledgling project goes deep and arrives just in time for some balmy Ibiza party nights. 'Gravitate 03-1' is loopy and lazy and invitingly mid-tempo, 'Gravitate 03-2' picks up the pace a touch but is still couched in warm, roomy grooves and soul-drenched chords. The flipside brings more gritty and turbo-powered tech on 'Gravitate 03-3' then a nice silky and blissed out cruiser to close on 'Gravitate 03-4'. Four more functional but well-formed sounds from the brilliant Burnham.

Jackie Mittoo’s ‘Reggae Magic’ is a new collection from the great Jackie Mittoo. The album features a mixture of classic tunes and rarities from the period 1967-74, when Mittoo was at the height of his musical powers. Mittoo’s solo career began after the end of The Skatalites in 1965. He began pushing new musical boundaries, creating a uniquely identifiable organ-led funky reggae sound that owed as much to Booker T and The MGs, Jimmy Smith, Stax and Motown as to the post-ska and emergent rocksteady island rhythms of Kingston, Jamaica. His solo work at the legendary Studio One spanned seven albums and hundreds of singles.

Aside from producer and founder Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd, it’s hard to think of anyone more central to the sound and success of Studio One than Mittoo; keyboard player extraordinaire, songwriter, arranger, musician, truly the Keyboard King at Studio One. Jackie Mittoo had been the youngest founding member of The Skatalites (at age 16), probably the most important group in Jamaican music. After they split, he became leader of the three pivotal groups at Studio One – The Soul Brothers, The Soul Vendors and Sound Dimension. He also became musical director for Studio One, helping create countless hits for singers Ken Boothe, Bob Andy, The Wailers, John Holt, Delroy Wilson and more – unforgettable tunes like Alton Ellis’ ‘I’m Still in Love with You’, Marcia Griffiths’ ‘Feel Like Jumping’, The Heptones’ ‘Baby Why’ and others. Between 1965 and 1968, many of the tunes created at Studio One can be attributed to Mittoo – timeless instrumental tracks, recorded either under his own name or those of The Soul Brothers, Soul Vendors and Sound Dimension, that have become the basis for literally 1000s and 1000s of Jamaican songs over many decades, giving the music an unsurpassed longevity.

The endurance of his music was as a direct result of significant developments in Jamaican music in the 1970s, namely the creation of three important new styles: Dub, Deejay and Dancehall. In the early 1970s Mittoo’s instrumental tracks were used as the musical source for a series of classic Studio One dub albums. At the same time Deejays at Studio One, including Dillinger, Prince Jazzbo and Dennis Alcapone, began toasting over these same popular rhythms to create their own new songs. In the mid-70s, a new generation of Studio One singers and deejays, including Sugar Minott, Freddie McGregor, Johnny Osbourne, Michigan & Smiley and others, began once again creating new melodies over these original instrumentals, signalling the birth of a new Jamaican style that became known as ‘dancehall’.

As dancehall swept across the island, rival producers copied these now classic rhythms. These original Jackie Mittoo-driven tunes spread like a virus throughout Jamaican music; be they the instrumental cuts to tunes such as Alton Ellis’ ‘Mad Mad’ , ‘I’m Just A Guy’, Larry Marshall’s ‘Mean Girl’, Slim Smith’s ‘Rougher Yet’, and instrumentals such as Mittoo’s classic ‘Hot Milk’ or ‘One Step Beyond’, The Sound Dimension’s ‘Real Rock’, ‘Heavy Rock’, ‘Full Up’, ‘Drum Song’, ‘Rockfort Rock’ … and the list goes on. These tracks became a constant soundtrack to the island, emitting from the ever-present sound of speaker boxes strung up around dancehalls. This recycling travelled even farther afield; The Sound Dimension’s instrumental ‘Real Rock’, updated by Willie Williams on his classic ‘Armageddon Time’ was in turn covered by The Clash. Lily Allen sampled Mittoo’s debut solo single ‘Free Soul’ for number one hit ‘Smile’; Dawn Penn’s ‘You Don’t Love Me (No, No, No)’, accompanied by The Soul Vendors, was revived by Penn and producers Steely & Cleevie in 1994, since covered by Rihanna, Ghostface Killah, Stephen Marley, Damian Marley and Beyonce. And so it goes; an endless time-leaping, continent-hopping diasporic musical map of the world with all roads essentially leading back to one man – Jackie Mittoo.

Hard Times and DJ Spen go back decades. The Baltimore house veteran has long been a fixture at the label’s parties, on the remixes, and now under his Muthafunkaz alias he cements the bond with a set that’s as much a time capsule as it is a renewal. The Muthafunking Hard Times EP revisits a clutch of Spen’s early-to-mid-2000s jams that, till now, have never been committed to wax. True to form, Spen hasn’t simply dusted them off: he’s remastered, refreshed, and imbued them with a 2025 gleam, bridging past and present in one irresistible sweep.

The A-side opens with the Funkee Kole Cappin’ Mix of 2008’s “(You Make Me Say) Woah!”, a gospel-fired stormer whose call-and-response vocals climb skyward while a cheeky Fab Four nod keeps things buoyant. “Holy Ghost” follows in its Holy Spirit incarnation, wringing church-floor catharsis from tribal percussion and sanctified chants - a blast of kinetic, almost Faya Combo-like fervor.

Flip the record and you’re hit with the swing and strut of 2010’s “Gotta Hold On Me,” Spen’s Vocal Mix turning horns and jazzy drums into a pure adrenaline surge. The closer, “Doin’ The Best I Can,” is a tonal shift: harmonica and guitar sketches circling loose-limbed beats, equal parts after-hours reverie and Sunday-morning balm.

Too vibrant, too joyous, too Spen not to press - The Muthafunking Hard Times EP isn’t just archival housekeeping. It’s an affirmation of what house music does best: uplift, electrify, and remind you that, even decades on, the spirit still moves.

Tool : The last Analog Records USA was in 2000... Why did you stop it and why do you wish to realese vinyls again ?


Mr Fresh : Ii actually never stopped I just made alot of other styles of music that I do not think were proper for my Analog and E.M.F. labels (Analog is now run by Mike McLure of SAuto Kinetic we work together on that label and Electric Music Foundation is all my label.. we did some great digital releases on E.M.F. recently with ADSX / Scott Radke/Dave Olson / Poor Boy Rich etc.. and can be found here

for me my last Techno Analog vinyl 12” Release was in 1997 Quiver 12"


But I did release a few Techno/Electro style tracks on my Electric Music Foundation labels as 12” singles

I always continue to make music and have hundreds of unreleased songs that I think some are not worth putting on 12” single as I fear to weird, experimental etc.. I try to isolate myself and make unique music hopefully not sounding like what others are making but try to be my own self




Tool : What are you favourite machines or software to make music these days ?


Mr Fresh : I still use many vintage synths like my Jupiter 8, Arp 2600, Roland System 100M, 303’s etc.. but now I also use some Eurorack Modules E950, Clouds, Metropolis Sequencer etc.. also TR8, Twisted Electrons Acid 8, Teenage Engineering Factory, PO Calculators, Korg Volca Sampler, Electrix Filter Factory, Space Echo (Boss) and MPC 4000 controlling Hardware and I usually record random ideas to a flash recorder and sometimes import into ableton tracks etc.. then use Reaktor or some other soft synths but I always start Analog. I also use Critter and Guitari Looper to record organic sounds to use for percussion.




Tool : What are your forthcoming projects on vinyl in the near future ?


Mr Fresh : I have a remix electro style for New Zealand Independent Cardboard and Computers soon on 12” single

I have COMACID EP coming out of Belgium on 12” single very soon which features some older tracks (Binder, Scared, Slow Death, Spacefunk) mainly re-release of Techno/Acid stuff all analog of course

Then I have two releases with Toolbox Records and possible new stuff with Acid.Paris and hopefully we start a nice relationship with Toolbox for a long term ha ha! My daughters start school next month so I am preparing new Eurorack Modules and getting Syncussion to really hit it and spend some serious time in the studios. I am really inspired to do the more electronic vibes now and feeling the A.C.I.D. alot lately with the newer technology

In jedem Titel erkundet triosence-Bandleader und Komponist Bernhard Schüler die Tragik und Schönheit von Geschichten aus dem Alltag und malt diese Erlebnisse in betörend melodiöse, mitreißende Instrumentalkompositionen. Große Freude und tiefer Schmerz, scheinbar Banales und wahrhaft Lebensveränderndes liegen oft überraschend nah beieinander. Der Verlust einer Schwangerschaft in "Little Lost Wonder", die Liebe zu seiner kleinen Tochter in "Tamina's Lullaby", der Tod seines Onkels in "Dear Rainer" oder die Freude über wild wuchernde Garten-Gewächse seiner Lebensgefährtin in "Tomato Party" - "Stories of Life" ist die in Musik nachvollzogene Erkenntnis von Bernhard Schüler, dass im Leben all das verwoben ist. "Ich setze mich ans Klavier und spiele mir alles von der Seele. Schöne und traurige Erlebnisse, Beobachtungen, Empfindungen - Musik zu schreiben ist meine Art, über das Leben nachzudenken", erklärt er.Was "Stories Of Life" musikalisch auszeichnet, sind progressive Strukturen, die immer wieder in Stil, Tempo und Stimmung variieren; die mal laut oder leise sind, verträumt oder kraftvoll. Sie sollen den Hörer auf eine regelrechte Reise schicken, indem sie eine Reihe von starken Klangbildern erzeugen. "Wenn ich komponiere, habe ich das immer im Hinterkopf", so Bernhard Schüler. "Nämlich Geschichten mit meiner Musik zu erzählen. Das ist, was die Leute am meisten berührt." Auf "Stories Of Life" entwickeln er und seine Bandkollegen Tobias Schulte (Schlagzeug) und Omar Rodriguez Calvo (Bass) mit großer Leichtigkeit ihren melodiösen, stimmungsvollen Sound-Mix aus Weltbeat, Folk, Jazz, Rock und Pop konsequent weiter. "Wir gestalten ein totales Crossover", erklärt Bernhard Schüler, "das ist Musik, die zwar in klassischer Jazz-Formation daherkommt - mit Klavier, Bass und Schlagzeug - aber Jazz im herkömmlichen Sinn kann man das nicht mehr nennen. Mir geht es um starke Melodien und klare Songstrukturen. Eine Fokussierung auf das Wesentliche ist mir wichtig oder anders gesagt: musikalisch auf den Punkt zu kommen."Dem Maler Rainer Hoffmann ist nicht nur das Stück "Dear Rainer" gewidmet - mit "Stories Of Life" wird ihm auf besondere Weise ein Denkmal gesetzt. Sein Gemälde "Badere vid Ingetoprsjön" (Badende am Ingetorpssee) ziert denn auch das Cover-Artwork und im Booklet finden sich zehn weitere Bilder des Künstlers - jedes thematisch einem der Songs zugeordnet. "Leider hat die Kunst meines Onkels nie die Aufmerksamkeit und Anerkennung bekommen, die sie wirklich verdient hat", so Schüler. "Aber er hat ein sehr aufregendes Leben geführt und war ein wahrer Abenteurer, der bereits in frühen Jahren in die schwedische Wildnis gezogen ist und die ganze Welt bereist hat, um dort zu malen. Alles andere war ihm egal. Diese Leidenschaft für die Kunst - ohne Wenn und Aber - hat mich schon als kleiner Junge fasziniert, und wenn er damals Geschichten aus seinem Leben erzählt hat, saß ich mit großen Augen vor ihm." Eine dieser Geschichten greift Schüler in "Marrakesh Swing" auf - ein Flirt mit der Kultur einer Stadt, die er nie besucht hat, aber in seiner Komposition zu blühendem Leben erweckt. Der Hörer erlebt sie vor seinem geistigen Auge - in all ihren Facetten, Farben und ihrer Lebendigkeit.Mit "Tamina's Lullaby" ist nach langer Zeit wieder ein Stück für Soloklavier auf einem triosence-Album enthalten. Zudem schließt eine Referenz auf die Vergangenheit den Kreis der Geschichten auf "Stories of Life": Eine neue Instrumentalversion von "Like The Wind", das ursprünglich mit der US-Sängerin Sara Gazarek für das Album "Where Time Stands Still" aufgenommen wurde, bildet den Schlusspunkt des Albums.

Formed in the mid-eighties Midlands, they are still not only eating pop but spewing it up in a chaos of thrilling ideas on new album ‘Delete Everything’. Their eighth record sees them further refine, define and deconstruct their melange of industrial rock, loop da loop techno, gonzoid hip hop and punk rock into a series of captivating sci-fi anthems. The band still look and sound like they have stepped out the pages of 2000 AD magazine with Graham Crabb and Mary Byker trading vocals like bouncing Duracell bunnies to the itching, compulsive beats surrounding them. Davey Bennett brings the bottom end and Cliff Hewitt plays the beats whilst Adam Mole delivers guitar aggro and sometimes waves his keyboard around with a delinquent glee. Still creative, still in a world of their own Pop Will Eat Itself have deleted everything and started all over again.
