Starting out in 2001 to tie up some loose ends from our regulars, SPEICHER has since become a guarantee for vanguard dance sounds from all over the planet, allowing KOMPAKT to invite and support electronic artists that comfortably inhabit both the delicate and the more deliberate ends of the electronic music spectrum. For SPEICHER 81, Amsterdam-based DJ and producer PATRICE BÄUMEL presents two adventurous minimal epics with decidedly mind-bending propensities.

As a long-running resident DJ at Amsterdam's renowned Trouw club, PATRICE BÄUMEL certainly knows how to draw in a crowd, having proven his skillful approach to hypnotic techno time and time again, as an impeccable host as well as an internationally acclaimed guest DJ in the world's leading venues. Just as his DJ sets, Patrice likes to infuse his own music with raw energy and a sense for sonic adventure - MILE HIGH GANG serves as a perfect example for his credo, underpinning its vibrant synth sequences with a meticulously crafted - and intensely propelling - beat.

The true mind bender, however, arrives with the flipside's aptly named VERTIGO, a deceptively simple, yet unstoppable son of a pitch shifter, cutting its way through spiralling serpentines in dizzying heights. Never one to let himself get bogged down by genre markers or scene compliancy, PATRICE BÄUMEL commutes between electronic factions with ease: he caters to a purist crowd as well as those in dire need of sonic surprises, giving both daydreamers and nighthawks something to rock out about.

3 Feet High and Rising is the debut studio album by hip-hop trio De La Soul, and was released on March 3, 1989. It marked the first of three full-length collaborations with producer Prince Paul, which would become the critical and commercial peak of both parties. It contains the singles, “Me Myself and I”, “The Magic Number,” “Buddy,” and “Eye Know”. The album title came from the Johnny Cash song “Five Feet High and Rising”. It is listed on both Rolling Stone’s 200 Essential Rock Records and The Source’s 100 Best Rap Albums. When Village Voice held its annual Pazz & Jop Critics Poll for 1989, 3 Feet High and Rising was ranked #1. It was also listed on Rolling Stone’s The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Released amid the 1989 boom in gangsta rap, which gravitated towards hardcore, confrontational, violent lyrics, De La Soul's uniquely positive style made them an oddity beginning with the first single, “Me, Myself and I.” Their positivity meant many observers labeled them a “hippie” group, based on their declaration of the “D.A.I.S.Y. Age” (Da. Inner. Soul. Yall). Sampling artists as diverse as Hall & Oates, Steely Dan and The Turtles, 3 Feet High and Rising is often viewed as the stylistic beginning of 1990s alternative hip hop (and especially jazz rap). 3 Feet High & Rising was chosen by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry for its cultural significance and general excellence.

This special boxset release of De La Soul’s 3 Feet High and Rising includes twelve 7” custom singles pressed on splatter vinyl and housed in custom sleeves, housed in a box that includes a 7” pinup and a double-sided 7” slipmat, and is available first at record stores as part of RSD Black Friday. In between his stints with the James Gang and the Eagles, Joe Walsh tackled his second solo studio album The Smoker You Drink The Player You Get which became his most successful solo outing. The 1973 LP continued the heavy and light rock mix of tracks found on his previous release, Barnstorm.

Ihre selbstgewählte Genre-Zuschreibung Dark Punk kratzt dabei nur an der Oberfläche. Das Spektrum reicht vom aggressiv-düsterem Surf-Punk ("Das bin ich nicht") über spröden, repetitiven Sound mit Noise-Ausbrüchen ("Aufmerksamkeit") bis zu hymnisch-melodischen Post-Punk ("Delirium"). Bei "Das Programm", - einer bittersüßen Romanze in Zeiten totaler Überwachung - , wird es plötzlich ungewöhnlich ruhig-melancholisch dank 60ies-Orgel und Background-Gesang von Mara. L'APPEL DU VIDE beschäftigen sich textlich in knappen Worten mit Verleugnung, Scheitern und Entfremdung. "Delirium" klingt dabei wie der Soundtrack zur Pandemie, wurde aber schon 2019 geschrieben. Die Songs wurden von Flatty aufgenommen und klanglich von Max Herrmann/Gloven Studio Leipzig (Mix) und Mikey Young (Mastering) veredelt.

Ihr zerstörerischer Appetit auf 80er-Jahre-Crossover-Thrash wird nur noch von einem unstillbaren Durst nach eiskaltem Bier und guten Bud(s) übertroffen. Moshemian Thrashody hält die Party in Schwung. Insanity Alert geben vier bekannten Klassikern, darunter Guns 'N' Roses und Iron Maiden, einen schnellen und spritzigen Dreh. Einer von ihnen könnte Sie allerdings überraschen. Die Leadsingle "Beerless Fiesta" parodiert... George Michael? "I'm never going to drink again / Poor old lives has taken a beating" schreit Heavy Keevy in rotznasiger Agonie, als würde er sich an die Toilette klammern. "The Holy Empire" sollte das letzte Warlord-Studioalbum mit neuem Songmaterial bleiben, denn Bandgründer William J. Tsamis verstarb am 13. Mai 2021 im Alter von nur 60 Jahren. Allerdings erschien danach noch ein weiteres Warlord-Album, nämlich "The Hunt For Damien" im Jahre 2015. Darauf zu hören ist als Sänger Nicholas Leptos (u.a. auch bei Astronomikon, Prodigal Earth, Gangland und Diphteria tätig). Das jetzt erscheinende "Free Spirit Soar", welches auch zwei überarbeitete Nummern von Lordian Guard enthält, ist ein Tribut von Sänger Giles Lavery an das musikalische Erbe von Bill Tsamis. Er wird dabei unterstützt von Mark Zonder (Drums), Jimmy Waldo (Keyboards/Synthesizer), Phillip Bynoe (Bass) sowie Eric Juris (Gitarre). Alle Songs wurden zwischen März und September 2023 aufgenommen.

Giles Lavery, der auch als Produzent fungierte, erklärt die Entstehungsgeschichte des Albums im Detail: "Unser erklärtes Ziel als Band war es, diese Musik für Bill fertigstellen. 1981, the leaden years are over, the socialist left is in power in France and the first wave of punk seems a long way off. However, the youth of the day had not said its last word, and bands were springing up all over the place, free radio stations were opening up, fanzines were being published, concerts were being staged on the fly and little by little a scene was forming, a motley crew of kids in revolt, radical activists and just plain old folk passing through.

After having cut their teeth in a variety of more or less confidential bands, in which you'd come across a good number of players from this up-and-coming alternative scene, the members of Guernica moved up a gear, determined to blow on the still-glowing embers of rebel rock. With the shortage of venues the rule at the time, they began by scouring the suburban MJCs, putting on wild concerts and eventually meeting up with the squatters of the Couronnes commune and the members of V.I.S.A., with whom they played an active part in organising concerts in squatted buildings in these relegated areas of the capital.

In February 1983, the V.I.S.A. association and the Abattoir art collective (which included some members of Guernica) organised a concert at the Usine Pali-Kao. That evening, two groups took to the stage in succession: Guernica and a fledgling duo, Bérurier Noir. The evening will go down in the history of alternative rock as one of the key turning points of the period. After the departure of Loran, who played guitar with both bands, Fabrice Benoît joined Guernica on guitar, and the gang continued for a few more months, ending on a high note with a chaotic concert at the Eldorado in Paris.

Until now, it's been impossible to get your hands on any of the band's recordings unless you're lucky enough to own the Paris Mix compilation, the Guernica/Bérurier Noir split or the V.I.S.A. Usine Cascades 1982 cassette. This vinyl, a perfect record of the era, brings together the six tracks recorded by the band at the time.

Whether you’re on a journey towards self acceptance, or locking yourself away for days, it’s safe to say the human experience can be an emotional rollercoaster; GAMI GANG explores the highs and lows, and all the twists and turns in between. In similar fashion, joyous and anthemic tunes find themselves winding their way into their somber and soft spoken counterparts, swerving through explosive bridges along the journey. Throughout manic momentum shifts, the ride slows down to make way for moments of clarity. Happiness and innocence are sprinkled in with displays of darkness or arrogance, and most of the time we exist in the middle. However, those unexpected jumps of adrenaline are what make this ride enticing. It’s human nature to get back on, and feel that rush one more time.

Although you expect thecompilation to be talking jazz, volume 3 explores a broader array of styles, genres, and sounds than ever before, arriving at a point where the 'young cats' of today don't bother no more. It may focus on the Belgian scene, but let's face it, seeing the influences, this one could be compiled from all over the world. From the empowering and bittersweet voices of Oriana Ikomo and Adja, over the more acoustic-electronic productions of Moodprint, Ciao Kennedy, Kassius and echofarmer. It's even expanding the Jazz Cats universe to dub and bass-heavy tracks with Kin Gajo and Le Ministère, Ethio-jazz from Azmari, while sending you back to earth with bodies' swirling sax and drums. Famed for his gloriously eclectic taste on the decks, he switches effortlessly between hip hop, funk, breaks, neck-snapping beats, future bass, South-American influences, bruk riddims, some wild African rhythms and of course, jazz.

Growing up as a child, his father would have the sounds of jazz flowing through the speakers. Which led him to bars around town to hear the latest jazz ensembles. Falling in love with the genre, he would later refine his knack for record digging and fine ear for music working at Belgium's legendary Music Mania record store in his hometown Brussels. Which makes that Lefto is consistently a couple steps ahead. He doesn't wait for the next thing to land in his lap, but actively seeking it out.

"Berlin is the Spanish TV series created by Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato for Netflix. It serves as a prequel to Money Heist/La Casa de Papel, focusing on Andrés de Fonollosa, aka “Berlin”. The story goes back his golden age before the events of Money Heist, where Berlin and a masterful gang gather in Paris to plan one of his most ambitious robberies ever. Bach und Jazz - diese Verbindung besteht seit mehr als 60 Jahren und ist mittlerweile längst nicht mehr neu - aber wieder immer neu zu entdecken. Und mit "About Bach" ist die aktuelle LP-Veröffentlichung der Vinyl-Edition Black Forest Sounds ein weiterer musikalischer und klanglicher Leckerbissen für Musikfreunde, eingespielt von Johannes Mössinger im Ensemblehaus des Freiburger Barockorchesters auf einem Steinway D-Flügel. Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) ist unstrittig einer der wichtigsten Komponisten überhaupt. Seine Musik übt auf viele Musiker einen Reiz aus, vor allem aber auf Jazzer. Spätestens seit der Franzose Jacques Loussier Ende der 50er Jahre mit "Play Bach" die Grenzüberschreitung zwischen zwei Musikwelten etablierte, haben sich viele Jazzmusiker vor allem eben mit J.S. Bach beschäftigt und diesen immer wieder neu aufgearbeitet... Hier ein weiteres Meisterwerk, eingespielt vom Freiburger Pianisten Johannes Mössinger, der sich seit vielen Jahren (auch) mit Bach beschäftigt. Der 1964 geborene Musiker ist seit fast 30 Jahren auf der Jazzszene aktiv, unternahm aber Ausflüge in die Klassik und hat seit vielen Jahren immer wieder Bach-Themen aufgenommen. Im Jazz arbeitete er mit zahlreichen US-Musikern, wie Joe Lovano, Joel Frahm, Don Bradon und Adam Nussbaum zusammen, um mit denen vor allem seine eigenen Kompositionen zu präsentieren. Mösssinger hat seine ganz eigene Sichtweise auf Bach und kombiniert Bach mit seiner eigenen Musik: "Wie Mössinger Bach verwandelt, so verwandelt die Musik auch den Zuhörenden: Ein Gang durch eine sorgfältig kuratierte Gegenüberstellung, die den Blick auf Bach schärft, herausfordert und verändert. Bach hat sich bewegt, wurde bewegt, hat seine Räumlichkeit verändert und die Position gewechselt. Am Ende scheint ein anderes Licht darauf", schreibt die Musikerin und Autorin Maria Reich in den Liner Notes zur LP.

The Madlib Invazion Music Library Series Entry #8: Karriem Riggins’ To The Jungle. Riggins is the type of drummer whose power and finesse shakes even Malcolm Catto. If you know what that means, this is the album for you. The Madlib Invazion Music Library Series was created by Madlib and Egon to give their creative friends a chance to stretch out and indulge in whatever type of music they wanted. This music was created for easy, one-stop clearance in film and television synchronization usage and for sampling. You can also enjoy these albums in the way that many do with the best of the best vintage library catalogs – listen, ponder, repeat.

They were one of the few racially and sexually integrated bands on the scene. Vocalist Pauline Black wrote about sexism, racism, and social issues. Their debut release was the AA side of the Specials single 'Gangsters' in the summer of 1979, which just consisted of Neol Davies and John Bradbury (of The Specials) before quickly forming a full band by the end of the year. Releasing their follow up single On My Radio' which reached No. 6 in the UK charts. Their debut album 'Too Much Pressure' was released in February 1980 getting to No. 5 in the UK charts, which also included two further hit singles 'Three Minute Hero' and 'Missing Words'.

Seafood Sam is a futuristic artifact. If that description might sound confusing at first, it matches the eclectic dualities found in true originals. With his effortless cool and timeless style, the North Long Beach native defies convention and exact comparison. He's a virtuosic rapper, a stop-you-in-your tracks singer, and a symphonic producer. Welcome to the lavish life of a laid-back transcontinental man of mystery, rolling in old school Cadillacs, eating caviar with a blade in his pocket, and making plays in vintage Pelle Pelle gear. A blaxploitation icon for the Instagram age, blessed with the bars of a `90s legend and 23rd century swagger. Seafood Sam is a true hero of modernity. On his full-length album debut for up-and-coming label drink sum wtr (Kari Faux, Deem Spencer, Aja Monet) debut, Standing on Giant Shoulders, Sam splits the difference between Snoop Dogg and D' Angelo, Curren$y and David Ruffin. The songs reveal a forward-thinking sensibility rooted in ancestral soul. He creates spiritual hymns for the streets that tap into universal ideals and irrepressible groove. In an era plagued by short-term thinking, his ambitions reveal a crate-digging depth of music history and a meticulous ear for detail. The giant shoulders in the album's title refer to James Brown, Bobby Brown, and Miles Davis - the holy trinity who inspired Sam's process. While the constant artistic left turns of the trumpeter that birthed Ccool offered an aspirational archetype. The story starts in the glory days of Long Beach hip-hop. As a young child, the G-Funk era soundtracked rides in Sam's father's car. Some of his earliest memories are trying to memorize Snoop's verse on "Nuthin' But a "G" Thang." Beyond gangsta rap, the LBC has historically doubled as a capital of lowrider soul and carwash oldies. At any intersection, you could hear Dogg Food or Brenton Wood, Warren G or Barbara Lynn. This too was absorbed via osmosis. It also just so happened that the art of performance was always in Sam's blood. So at family functions, he and his sister supplied entertainment by singing karaoke renditions of The Isley Brothers. While his Harlem Shake remains a thing of local lore. Long Beach is a culturally diverse mecca of skate parks and gang life, street fashion and tricky dance moves. This is the place that raised Sam on a diet of Wu-Tang and Nelly Furtado, Lil Bow Wow and Allen Iverson. He was the middle ground between his two older brothers: one who gangbanged, the other who graduated with a master's degree from UC-Santa Barbara. But it wasn't until the end of high school that Sam started to take rap seriously. Alongside long-time collaborators like Huey Briss and Reaper Mook, Sam's name began to make waves on the northside of the city, but he was partially distracted by a modeling career that paid the bills and took him all to way to walk in Paris' fashion week. The first turning point arrived with 2018's "Ramsey," a self-produced, slick-talk anthem with over 10,000,000 streams across all platforms. With each subsequent release, Sam showcased his peerless consistency, building buzz both online and in the city streets. Spin hailed his "smooth and unhurried cadences and understated lyricism_ that sounds like nothing else in Long Beach." Clash raved about Sam's "evolution as an artist, cruising through nostalgic production with slick, witty rhymes." The culmination arrives with Standing on Giant Shoulders. High Llamas present Hey Panda - a modern pop music/deep listening experience that could only issue forth from their personal quadrant of the galaxy. Hey Panda projects soulfully through an enervating abstract of today"s popular music; the sound of the Llamas" stately melodies and expressive ditties laid open - blissfully shattered - with drums and vocals hitting different, burning sounds and contemporary production twists pulling the ear at every turn. For the past few decades, High Llamas have trafficked in contemporary pop sounds directed toward the avant end of the spectrum as much as not. But here the message was clear. Llamas" composer-in-residence Sean O"Hagan was determined to let go. Hey Panda does just that, with a set of tunes reflecting on multiple levels how definitions change over the course of a lifetime, radiating an optimism derived from the diverse conundrums of today. Eight years since their last release, the pop musical Here Come The Rattling Trees, High Llamas have reinvented themselves again, mixing their peerless harmonic voice with what Sean regards as the "extraordinarily good" production sounds of today on Hey Panda. Choosing not to look backward to former golden ages celebrated in earlier Llamas eras, Sean"s instead found himself opened up by the sounds of music brought into the house by his adult children and the sounds encountered at sessions for which he"s recently written arrangements. For all of its sense of departure, Hey Panda is a movement in the High Llamas oeuvre that"s been a long time in development. Aspects of soul music were addressed at the time of Can Cladders; similarly, aspects of electronic dance music were in the mix in the late 90s, around the time of Cold and Bouncy. But nothing up to now has refocused the music of High Llamas so completely. Sharing the impulse of late-period Miles Davis and Quincy Jones, with further inspiration from Steve Lacy, SZA, Sault, No Name and Ezra Collective, among many others, Sean O"Hagan and High Llamas are living joyfully in the new and the now, with Hey Panda.

Pastime Paradise, first released by Stevie Wonder in 1976 got a new lease of life when sampled by Coolio on his Grammy Award winning Gangsta’s Paradise. It has also over the years been covered by Patti Smith as well as our fave version, courtesy of Latin percussionist Ray Barretto. First released on CTI in 1981, to this day it remains a staple for both the jazz and soul rooms. Never before released on a 12 inch, Major Keys continue their fine form with this extended floor filler that will appeal to DJ’s and collectors alike. It also flips it with La Cuna and Mambotango taken from the same 1981 LP. This is a special EP and one that you will want for your collection.

Plizzken are back in a big way with their eagerly anticipated second LP, Do You Really Wanna Know? These German punks' debut LP was the first full length where lead singer Sebi sang entirely in English. Since that album's release to great acclaim from the international street punk commu- nity, Sebi suffered the setback of a debilitating workplace accident, but triumphantly rose above all expecta- tions for recovery, making a hard-hit- ting new record with his long-running band Stomper 98 to boot! Returning their focus to Plizzken, Sebi and the crew are locked in and razor tight, crafting 13 brand new tracks of anthemic working class street punk that will thrill their fans while taking them by surprise. What will strike listeners immediately is a renewed focus on melody and hooks. In short, these songs are CATCHY! By the time the handclaps come in on the fourth song, "Memory Lane," you may just find yourself dancing around the room to these tunes. Likewise for the post-punk/new wave influenced groove that drives tracks like "I Don't Wanna. "Without sacrificing the realism and grit with which they face the world and sound the alarms for the working class to rise up, Plizzken sound renewed, positive, and keen to encourage everyone ready "TO FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT," as the gang vocals on "Mad World" put it. Although they are all punk rock veterans with decades playing music, Do You Really Wanna Know? has the energy of a hungry young band who are not about to waste a new lease on life. Combining street level punk rock 'n roll with a genuine pop sensibility and a rabble-rousing spirit, executed with the chops of seasoned players, Do You Really Wanna Know? is truly a record that will have old fans dancing and singing along with fists in the air, hand in hand with what is certain to be an army of new ones.

Nach den ersten gemeinsamen Demos war klar, dass das geplante Albumprojekt viel mehr als eine Aneinanderreihung von Tracks werden muss. Und so kreieren die beiden Producer-Kings kurzerhand einen Soundtrack für ihren eigenen late 80s-Thriller, verzichten dabei aber komplett auf gängige Klischees. Nicht nur der Albumtitel, entliehen aus dem gleichnamigen Filmklassiker von 1989 sondern das gesamte Konzept von Tango & Cash ist eine Liebeserklärung an atmosphärische, auf VHS-Tapes gebannte Verfolgungsjagden der späten 80er und frühen 90er-Jahre.

Um das Kopfkino beim Hören perfekt zu machen, ist die Tracklist wie eine Auswahl an Filmsequenzen zusammengestellt. Die Sprach-Interludes als akustische Verbindungselemente zwischen den Tracks und das von Wörn Dauerfeuer designte Albumcover lassen die Hörer*innen ab der ersten Minute in eine moody Filmkulisse eintauchen und machen Tango & Cash zu einem Gesamterlebnis. Als Topping verleiht das analoge Mastering von Dextar dem Album die notwendige Wärme. Tango & Cash ist die musikalische Version eines Vintage-Thrillers, perfekt ins Jahr 2024 überführt.

MIKE TRAMP ist wahrscheinlich der einzige Mensch, der jemals auf einem Album über Jolly Cola, die Beatles, Sauerkraut und Karate gesungen hat. So
geschehen auf "For første gang", das 2022 erschien und Mike Tramps allererstes Album in dänischer Sprache war.
Mit "Mand af en tid" tut er es wieder. Diesmal geht es in den Liedern um alles Mögliche, von Andy Warhols Fifteen Minutes of Fame bis zu Ingrid &
Lillebror, Muhammad Ali, Ole Olsen und Entenbraten. Und wieder geschieht das alles auf Dänisch. So zeigt Mike Tramp, dass es kein Spaß war, als er
zur Überraschung der meisten eine Platte in seiner Muttersprache veröffentlichte, nachdem er mehr als 45 Jahre lang auf Englisch gesungen hatte.
Die dänischen Lieder sind eine Möglichkeit, einige der Geschichten zu erzählen und die Erfahrungen zu teilen, die sich im Laufe seines Lebens
angesammelt haben.
"Viele von denen, die ich bei meinen Konzerten treffe, sind mir immer gefolgt, und wir sind fast zusammen aufgewachsen. Ich spüre, dass es für sie
etwas ganz Besonderes ist, wenn ich plötzlich auf Dänisch singe. Sie können sich in den Geschichten und Liedern wiedererkennen, weil ich über etwas
singe, das mir selbst etwas bedeutet. Ich bin ein erwachsener Mann, der von allem ein bisschen was probiert hat, aber ich bin immer noch da und
muss nicht dem neuesten Trend hinterherlaufen. Ich weiß, wer ich bin und stehe dazu. Deshalb konnte die Platte auch nicht anders heißen als "Man
of a time"".

Die amerikanische Band SKELETAL REMAINS bereitet mit "Fragments of the Ageless" für Century Media einen weiteren Death Metal-Angriff vor. Die Besetzung mit Chris Monroy (Gitarre/Gesang), Mike De La O (Gitarre), Pierce Williams (Schlagzeug) und Brian Rush (Bass) verkörpert das Genre und geht dabei tiefer, dunkler und bis an die Grenzen der Brutalität. "Fragments of the Ageless' ist eine stampfende Platte aus purem Death Metal", sagt die Band. "Ein tyrannisches, blastlastlastiges Sperrfeuer aus schnörkellosen Riffs und Kompositionen. Alles an diesem Album ist verdammt brutal und direkt ins Gesicht." SKELETAL REMAINS schrieben 'Fragments of the Ageless' zwischen Europa- und US-Tourneen/Festivals u.a. mit Emperor, Morbid Angel, Mortician, Left to Die und Defeated Sanity. Die Songwriting-Sessions waren von einer No-Limit-Mentalität geprägt, bei der Kreativität und bekannte Genre-Rituale gleichberechtigt nebeneinander standen. Das Ergebnis war nicht nur ein definitives Death-Metal-Showpiece, sondern eine Evolution. "Wir haben einen Gang höher geschaltet und die technische Seite und die zunehmende Intensität verbessert, ohne die Eingängigkeit zu vernachlässigen", sagt die Gruppe. "Mit jeder neuen Platte streben wir danach, uns in unserer Musikalität und unseren Songwriting-Fähigkeiten zu verbessern. Auf der einen Seite haben wir an Dichte und Brutalität zugelegt, auf der anderen Seite haben wir ein paar Songs mit längeren und 'epischeren' Strukturen geschrieben." Die lyrischen Themen von "Fragments of the Ageless" umfassen Folklore, Science-Fiction, Geschichte und persönliche Kämpfe. Inspiriert wurden sie von dem eindrucksvollen Cover von Dan Seagrave (Entombed, Memoriam). Das Album wurde von der Band und dem Studioexperten Dan Swanö (Opeth, Incantation) koproduziert, der auch den Mix und das Mastering übernahm. Der Death Metal ist mit "Fragments of the Ageless" nicht tot. Er war noch nie tödlicher!

Limited orange vinyl. We've all heard the axiom, "if you ignore it, maybe it'll go away." That goes double for a lot of people who wish to apply that saying to rap music. But when it comes to the West Coast "gangsta rapper" genre made popular by the likes of NWA, Eazy E, Ice-T and his Rhyme Syndicate cohort, King Tee, the truth is hard to ignore. King Tee aligns producer DJ Pooh on this Bass EP consisting of tracks recorded in 1987. They're joined by The Compton Posse that includes the late Mixmaster Spade and J-Ro from Tha Alkaholiks. This EP sharpens the skillful word play King Tee made famous on his debut album Act A Fool. From song to song, this EP has a superior sheen, a tightness and cohesiveness between rhyme and music. Born in Los Angeles and now a resident of the infamous West Coast rap capital, Compton, California, King Tee truly is a product of the streets. He openly admits to running with gangs in his youth, causing his mother endless embarrassment and frustration. So much so that, in a desperate attempt to turn his life around, she turned King Tee into the authorities when she discovered him stealing from her. Once out of jail, King Tee ran of to Houston, Texas. Trouble is that he was underage atthe time, so his mother again had King Tee locked up in a juvenile camp. When King Tee finally realized why his mother did what she did, he decided to turn his life around by dedicating himself to music. He listened obsessively to the radio and chose to become a DJ. When King Tee was released from juvenile camp he secured a mixing gig at KSU and then KYOK in Houston. Between station gigs he handled the mix at various venues and clubs. After gaining the necessary experience behind the tables, King Tee moved back to Los Angeles and hooked up with Ice-T. In rapid succession, King Tee met Du Pooh who enlisted him into his rap group (after King Tee bugged Pooh for months), then Pooh introduced Tee to DJ Unknown with whom he made several 12" records for the Techno Hop labelwhich is now released on this EP for the first time since then. Ice-T's influence brought Rhyme Syndicate Management's Jorge Hinojosa into the picture. King Tee eventually signed with Hinojosa who then secured a contract with Capitol Records for King Tee. The result was 1988's Act A Fool.

1961, Port Richmond, Staten Island, NYC: Five kids stumble into a community center, sent by their parents to keep them off the streets and out of trouble. A lifelong friendship is formed over their shared love of doo-wop. The kids start learning harmony and the next thing they know they're cutting records. The group begins to gain steam as they take their act to the packed clubs around New York City. But history has other plans for the boys. First, The Beatles invade America, making doo-wop yesterday's news. Then, the United States invades Vietnam and two of the five boys are sent off to the jungle. Reintroducing: The Splendids. 61 years after their initial formation, the group has reconvened to cut two truly breathtaking records. With three of the five surviving original members weaving together heartfelt harmonies, the group has regenerated themselves and enlisted the help of multi-platinum soul singer Eamon to sing lead. Eamon is no stranger to doo-wop, as he got his start in the music business touring the Northeast as a young boy with a group his father Walter formed in the 90's. With this father and son reunion on these two tracks, the listener is taken back to a time when walking down the street you might come across a gang of youth singing their hearts out on a street corner, serenading the city with their souls. The Splendids hired Los Angeles based producer and multi-instrumentalist Dan Ubick to produce the records and conjure up the retro rhythm and blues sounds of the 1960's. Frequent Eamon collaborator the Oklahoman Benj Heard was then brought on to mix and produce the vocals. Both Ubick and Heard's sonic fingerprints add texture and groove to the groups legacy on 'Cry Baby Cry' and 'Blame My Heart'. Generations have come together from coast-to-coast to take back what history took from them. Enjoy the sweet, sweet sounds of true soul. Enjoy The Splendids.
