Mara performs with her band (Poppy Ackroyd, Fiddes Smith, Jools Owen, Jamie Patterson) as well as solo.

Mara is classically trained in composition, piano and guitar as well as fine art. She has performed over 300 shows, both on festival stages and intimate concerts, most recent stages include Fusion (Germany), Kaltern Pop (Italy), Together the People (UK) and Sazavafest (Czech). Mara's music has taken her across Europe, to New Zealand, Australia, the US and around home shores in England, performing in venues small and large, some conventional, some extraordinary (including canal boats, caves, and a hospital!). She's become known for captivating audiences with her soulful melodies, rich lyricism, captivating voice, unassuming charm and wicked laugh

'Hive Mind Records present a 2LP compilation of songs by Moulay Ahmed El Hassani, a master of modern Moroccan music, who updates traditional folk forms with drum machines, autotune and incredible psychedelic guitar.

Moulay Ahmed El Hassani is practically unknown outside of his home country of Morocco where he's released over 50 albums on cassette and CD over the past 30 years, however Hive Mind Records seek to remedy that situation with the release of this compilation featuring songs originally released on Ahmed's own label, Sawt el Hassani, between 2006 and 2014.

Ahmed writes his own songs, plays all instruments himself, records and self produces at his home studio in Beni Mellal. His unique sound takes influence from a variety of Moroccan folk forms, particularly the Izlan and Ahidous styles of the Amazigh people of the mid-Atlas region. Ahmed has blended these styles with the rai and chaabi that were popular across the country through his youth. The resulting sound is like a twenty-first century folk music for a people caught somewhere between a vision of their own idealised pastoral past and a turbo charged, technologically driven urban future. Ahmed has embraced new musical technologies and his songs are made up of complex, polyrhythmic drum machine patterns, subtle loops, washes of new age synth, heavily autotuned male and female duet vocals, and his signature psychedelic microtonal guitar playing. His songs are sometimes gentle and melancholic, and sometimes more upbeat, but always deeply lyrical and melodic, and all feature lyrics in Amazigh and Arabic that deal with social issues and universal themes of love and loss.

Ukerewe is the largest inland island in Africa and can only be reached by an overpacked four-hour ferry ride on Lake Victoria. It is a place so remote that historically people often traveled there to abandon their albino children, based on the regional belief that they are in some way 'demonic.'
Eighteen members of the Standing Voice community volunteered for their first ever songwriting workshop, ranging in age from 24 to 57. But even among the willing, singing-out proved difficult, considering the group routinely avoided eye contact, rarely spoke above a whisper, and were unaccustomed to dancing.
Produced by Grammy-winner Ian Brennan (Tinariwen, Zomba Prison Project, Ramblin' Jack Elliott), the Tanzania Albinism Collective actively pushes the boundaries of what is considered Eastern African and 'world music,' while continuing to attract greater awareness and confront the dangers that the collective face daily due to prejudice and persecution at home.

Bill Callahan, fka Smog, is simultaneously a staple of strange American country, lo-fi, folk and independent music. His lyricism comes across as challenging and deeply autobiographical, equal parts "poetry leaning on true-to-life darkness" and "three chords and the truth."
So, it is fitting that Callahan's live set would command the same sense of friendliness-with-difficulty that the recorded songs do. With brief, candid, and charming interludes between older and newer material, an outsider can hear that this performance was obviously a full-bodied (and multi-era) engagement, no space left for distraction.

With the release of breakthrough albums Masterpiece and Capacity, Big Thief's Adrianne Lenker has established hers as one of the most powerful voices in music. As Consequence of Sound describes it, "Thanks to the swift ascent of Big Thief, singer-songwriter Adrianne Lenker has become one of the most praised indie folk artists of the last five years.'

While her output with Big Thief is what brought her music to the attention of most who hold her in such high regard, Masterpiece is not the beginning of the story. "My first solo record I made was Hours Were the Birds,' Lenker explains. 'I moved to New York and, starting from complete scratch, had nothing to show anybody that was representing what I did, other than stuff I made when I was 13. So, I decided I should record a solo album of my songs that I had been accumulating.'

In 2013 Lenker returned to her hometown of Minneapolis and entered Terrarium Studios with producer Rob Oesterlin, where she laid down ten songs on acoustic guitar. 'It's basically just like a live solo show,' Lenker describes, 'but with an added twist.' She then enlisted NYC friend Andrew Sarlo to mix the album (he would later produce and mix Masterpiece and engineer, produce and mix Capacity), and on January 24, 2014 Hours Were the Birds was released into the world.

The summer after graduating from Berklee College of Music, Adrianne Lenker moved to New York City. She met Buck Meek the day she moved there, at a corner market called Mr. Kiwi (although, technically they had already played a show together in Boston, so they recognized each other but weren't sure from where). The two explored the city by bicycle and eventually began to play songs together. "It was one of those friendships that developed extremely fast where suddenly you're each other's best friend," Lenker says. "We hung out every day from the moment we met.'

Meek's off-kilter, piercing guitar licks and solos are the perfect juxtaposition to bring Lenker's melodic and stirring vocals and lyrics to fruition. "I guess what struck me as a songwriter then was that her songs all seemed to be really human, and really emotional, and really honest — vulnerable — but at the same time they all somehow had this ineffable quality," Meek says. "Like, all of that human content was serving as a medium for something beyond.'

Soon they picked up a white conversion van, named her Bonnie, and made touring their whole lives. In 2014, songs crafted on the road were captured on two EPs released under the Buck and Anne moniker: one called a-sides and one called b-sides. Both warm, acoustic affairs.

In the ensuing years, Adrianne and Buck joined with Max Oleartchik and James Krivchenia to form Big Thief, one of the most beloved bands in music today. a-sides and b-sides provide an early glimpse at what was soon to come, while standing on their own as documents of a deeply meaningful time in the creative lives of Lenker and Meek.

This is the original line-up of Lone Justice.' —Ryan Hedgecock Musician and producer Marvin Etzioni first saw Maria McKee and Ryan Hedgecock in a club in 1982, playing George Jones and Hank Williams covers. He convinced them they needed original material. After working and writing, the band added Dave Harrington (bass) and Don Willens (drums), the band worked up material with Etzioni and cut 5 of the 6 tracks at the famed Record Plant. An earlier session provides the 6th track. The Western Tapes: 1983 exhibits the genesis of this highly-influential band. While the original demo version of 'Drugstore Cowboy' has appeared on various compilations, the remainder of the other tracks from the sessions have remained in the can. Two of the tracks appear in their earliest demo form and wound up landing on the classic 1988 Lone Justice debut, 'Working Late' and 'Don't Toss Us Away' (written by Maria's half-brother, Bryan MacLean of the classic band, Love) which would eventually become a top 5 smash for Country superstar Patty Loveless. Released in conjunction with the band, the 12" and CD EP were mastered by Bernie Grundman (who also cut the 45 RPM lacquers). It's a look into where they started and foretells where they would go. As Etzioni (who would later join the band) says in his liner notes: 'With countless hours together, it was a fun and innocent time. I believed we were creating a 21st century country band.' They created much, much more.

Beloved singer-songwriter-painter-poet Joni Mitchell will turn 75 this year on November 7th . Rhino will start the birthday celebration a few days early by releasing Mitchell's critically-acclaimed 2014 collection 'Love Has Many Faces: A Quartet, A Ballet, Waiting To Be Danced' on vinyl for the first time as a limited-edition, eight-LP box set.

'Love Has Many Faces: A Quartet, A Ballet, Waiting To Be Danced' was first conceived as the music to a ballet about love. But after spending 18 months trying to distil everything she'd written about love - and the lack of it - down to a single disc, Mitchell abandoned the ballet. 'I wanted the music to feel like a total work - a new work. No matter what I did, though, at that length, it remained merely a collection of songs,' she wrote in the liner notes to the set.

Undaunted, Mitchell did not give up. Instead, she continued to sequence her songs, determined to prove to herself that what she was after was possible. After two years, she had created a four-act ballet based on the 53 songs that make up this inspiring collection. 'I am a painter who writes songs. My songs are very visual. The words create scenes... What I have done here is to gather some of these scenes (like a documentary filmmaker) and by juxtaposition, edit them into a whole new work,' she explains.

Mitchell organized the music into different thematic acts, which allowed her songs to interact with one another in a whole new way. The process, she says, was a lot like making a film. 'I had forty years of footage to review. Then, suddenly, scenes began to hook up. Then series began to form. Instead of it being an emotional roller coaster ride as it was before - crammed into one disc - themes began to develop. Moods sustained. I was getting there... When this long editorial process (two years) finally came to rest, I had four ballets or a four-act ballet—a quartet. I also had a box set.'

Long-term listeners should find the music familiar but fresh. Newcomers have an adventure before them - a journey into highly-original, harmonically innovative, unusually rhythmic music. Some of the greatest musicians in the world are gathered here - supporting this emotionally charged exploration of love's many faces.

Limited to 5000 individually numbered copies, the set is presented in a hard-bound deluxe folio package. It includes 53 songs on eight 180-gram LPs. Etchings of Mitchell's artwork are featured on four individual album sides, each one signifying the end of an act in the ballet.

It truly is an artist-curated collection. Mitchell selected the material from 40 years of recording. She designed the package, which includes a book containing 53 lyrical poems, six paintings, and an autobiographical text illuminating her recording process. It is funny, mystical, and informative.

The legendary disco producer (and drummer) Cerrone has announced the release of his new Afro EP II, that will be coming out July 29th via Because Music.
Based in France, Cerrone has sold over 30 million albums worldwide throughout his career, and won a GRAMMY Award for his first hit 'Love in C Minor' (he also has four other GRAMMY nominations).
It was not a surprise to see him come back to his first loves in 2016 with his first 'Afro' EP.
Today, Cerrone announces the release of the second chapter of his Afro series, the second return to the roots for the French disco maestro. 'African Voodoo' and 'Papa Oye' are his two new songs paying a passionate homage to Africa and its syncopated, spontaneous and genuine rhythms.

Originally conceived as a book of 6 poems that developed into a record released independently in 1986, Universo Da Ilha sits at the cross-section of many different genres. Connecting contemporary New Age and ambient minimalist movements with traditional West African and Cape Verdean elements from the past (griot voices, djembe rhythms, melancholic morna), Vasco constructed his own 'universe' where, in spite of the isolation of the island at the time, he transcended barriers and created a global record that was ahead of its time

Vasco used his own synths and drum machines, and with the help of a small group of friends (Tey Gonçalves on percussion, Neney's amazing griot voice, Luis Morais on sax and flute), he recorded this Not-Balearic-but-Atlantic Ambient odyssey on a 16-channel Peavey mixer directly to an Akai tape recorder without overdubs.

I Started Writing And Recording Music In High School Using 2 Sony Two Track Tape Recorders To Simulate Multi-track Recordings. Around 1969 I Met David Lewis. We Played In Three Bands, Cold Teeth, The Enerjets And The Fool Bros. Members Included Sam Kirckhoff, Geoff Royce, Richard Armiger, Ralph Tucker And Guy (yug) Phillips. In '74 A Friend Brought Me Out To Blue Seas, A Recording Studio / Record Pressing Plant In Hunt Valley Md. Basically I Started Living There. George Massenburg Created The First Fully Parametric Eq / Programmable Console And State Of The Art Compressor. This Brought In The Big Names. Little Feat Was Making 'feats Don't Fail Me Now'. Lowell George Was Producing Robert Palmer 'sneakin' Sally Through The Alley'. Emmy Lou Harris Was Recording With The Seldom Scene. People Like Bonnie Raitt And Van Dyke Parks Were Regular Visitors. The Studio Was Being Managed By Steve Boone (bass -the Lovin' Spoonful). He Was Putting Together A Band And I Was Asked To Play Guitar. With Trudy Morgal, Lee Diamond And Bobby Webber, Blanche Performed Regionally Till '77. In '76 Blue Seas Moved To A Refurbished Grain Barge In Baltimore's Inner Harbor, Then Under Construction. On Christmas Day 1977 The Barge Sank In Freezing Water. Most Of The Equipment And Tapes Including A Steinway Grand Were Lost.

Assuming I Was A Recording Engineer, Flite Three Studios In Baltimore Asked If I Would Like To Be Their Chief Music Engineer! I Had To Learn Quickly But Took The Gig. At Flite Three I Recorded Local Bands, Gospel Groups, My Bands The Enerjets, Fool Bros. (suicide Squeeze, The Birds Are On Tonight) And In 1980, Began A Long Relationship With John Palumbo And Crack The Sky. White Music Was The First Of Many Projects.

In 1985 I Moved Over To Sheffield Studios In Phoenix Md, One Of The First Studios On The East Coast With A Ssl Console. There I Continued Working With Crack The Sky And Worked On A Variety Of Projects Including A Choice Hotels Commercial With Johnny Cash. In 1986 At John Palumbo's Suggestion I Created An Alias (rik Harley) A Heavy Metal Band 'steel Rider' And An Album 'eat The Monster'. I Used A Teac 8-track, A Linn Drum And A Rock Man In A Spare Bedroom. It Was Never Released But In 2005 I Was Writing For A Production Company In La. My Wife Suggested I Send It To Them. They Licensed 8 Songs And Two Were Featured In Mtv's 'road Rules'.

In 1990 I Became The First Official Employee Of Clean Cuts Music With Jack Heyrman And Tom Alonso. While There I Worked On Hundreds Of Commercials And Several Album Projects Including 'dr. John Plays Mac Rebennack' And Wall Matthews 'riding Horses'.

Over My Career I've Co-produced And Played On Two Greg Kihn Cds 'mutiny' And 'horror Show' And Also Had The Opportunity To Work With Barry White, Bill Withers, John Sebastian, Werner Herzog And Sam Shepard.
In 2003 I Started V Audio And Went Freelance. In '04 -'05 I Was A Staff Composer For Bunim- Murray Productions In Los Angeles, Writing For Nbc, Fox And Mtv. Since Then I Am A Freelance Mixer / Sound Designer At The Discovery Channel. I Have Two Telly Awards For Music And Sound Design. I Produce All Baltimore Orioles And Washington Nationals Radio Promos For Masn Sports.

While mystical repetition is common to 'Out of Your Tree' and the Liebezeit trilogy, the new album's rhythm is more meditative, sometimes otherworldly. Added to the still sparse drums and acoustic guitar instrumentation are flashes of lead guitar, keyboards and bass, often coloured with tape echo and reverb evoking '50s Doo-Wop and New York avant punks Suicide - both among Coyne's primary influences. The distinctive drumming of longtime friend and collaborator Werner Steinhauser - formerly the longest serving musical partner of Kevin Coyne, Robert's father - adds further musical and emotional continuity, as do the vocals of Robert's wife Wendy, the only other musician on the album.

The band Deadline Paranoia has been active in Amsterdam from 86 till 88. They have released 4 albums in small quantities. Their music was made and recorded at home with a great variety of instruments. This release is the first of a series of 3 records that will feature the essence of this band. The mastering is done by Brandenburg Mastering to ensure a high quality listening. Niels van Tomme (director of arts institute De Appel) has written the liner notes. The music has been carefully curated by Jeroen Vermandere while being in touch with the artists who worked on the project. Dean Wareham has recorded an album of western dreampop with his friend Cheval Sombre. Produced by Jason Quever (Papercuts, Beach House) and with a band featuring Britta Phillips (Luna), Anthony LaMarca (the War on Drugs).
Dean Wareham founded the bands Galaxie 500 and Luna. One-man-band Cheval Sombre (Chris Porpora) emerged in the 2000s, making recordings in his apartment on the Hudson River, on previous releases he worked with Dean & Britta, Sonic Boom and members of MGMT.

Blitzen Trapper are the Portland, Oregon-based experimental country and folk rock band who, in 2008, released 'Furr', their breakthrough album and label debut for Sub
Pop. The record was met with universal acclaim, earning praise from the likes of The Guardian, Pitchfork, Paste, AV Club and Rolling Stone, who in their four-star review called the album 'an engaging album full of rootsy beauty.' The album would earn
the no. 13 spot on Rolling Stone's 50 Best Albums Of 2008 later that year. For the newly expanded deluxe edition of 'Furr', Blitzen Trapper have compiled over two album's worth of material: the original album and twelve rare and previously nreleased tunes. The added songs are from the same recordings that become
'Furr', with the exception of the 'Live at KCRW' tracks, which were recorded during the 'Furr' tour. The songs 'War is Placebo', 'Booksmart Baby' and 'Maybe Baby' appeared as limited edition singles for Record Store Day in 2009 and 2011. This reissue also features new liner notes from Eric Earley reflecting on the album, as well as a track-by-track description of the bonus songs and a Q&A with the stage and screen actor Rainn Wilson (of 'The Office' fame). It's difficult to remember exactly where my head was in those days, recording 'Furr' in a leaky, dilapidated, pre-boom Portland building, all but condemned, where the
migrant workers congregated at the curb outside hoping to get picked up by desperate contractors, the dealers working the opposite corner, two blocks up the Burnside bridge running with pitched tents and sleeping bags all the way to the West
Side Mission, the black river sliding by beneath. For those in the know enough at the time to have heard it when Sub Pop first released 'Furr' in 2008, listeners had to have been underwhelmed by the hit and miss production, the furry overdriven vocals
and perilous sounding dubs, all industry-standard production fare now. But the songs must have shone through the noise even then. The stand-out title track recorded on a nearly defunct cassette four-track in one take and mixed on a couple-hundreddollar PC was almost an afterthought at the time, but its message was real enough: that life consists of change and growth, love and transformation. With 'Furr' I was attempting to create my own tiny sonic world of freak folk in order
to tell the tale of the Northwest as I remembered it growing up: a misty, empty, bedraggled place of mystery and violence, logging ghost towns and glutted rivers, dark creatures glimpsed from the corner of the eye in the endless evergreen forests where we'd go as teenagers hunting dark spirits, looking for trouble or trying to dodge our troubles back home.
