Riki aus Los Angeles ist das dunkle Synthie-Pop-Projekt der mysteriösen Niff Nawor, einer visuellen Künstlerin und Musikerin, die in den Deathrock-/Anarcho-Punk-Szene der kalifornischen Bay Area aktiv ist. Bevor sie 2017 ihr Solo-Engagement als Riki begann, war sie Mitglied von Crimson Scarlet. Ihr Wunsch, ihren eigenen Sound zu erforschen, manifestierte sich 2017 in den Aufnahmen der "Hot City"-Kassette, veröffentlicht auf Commodity Tapes und später auf Vinyl beim angesehenen Symphony of Destruction Label. Riki trat in der Folge mit Acts wie Light Asylum, Black Marble und Trisomie 21 auf. Für ihr selbstbetiteltes Debütalbum für Dais erforscht Riki Mut, Körperlichkeit und Romantik in acht zeitlosen Synthie-Pop-Hymnen. Produziert von der Hardware-basierten Synthesistin Matia Simovich von INHALT, werden Einflüsse und Ideen mit Stolz getragen - nostalgische Verweise auf Neue Deutsch Welle, frühe Adrian Sherwood Produktionen, klassischen ZYX Italo Disco, und New Wave/Pop wie Pat Benatar, Kate Bush und early Madonna - ohne dabei von frischem und gewagtem Elektro-Pop-Territorium abzuweichen.

Kitchen And The Plastic Spoons formed at a basement rehearsal studio in Stockholm, Sweden during the spring of 1980. The band consisted of Anne Taivan (vocals), Helena Lönnqvist (synthesizer), Iggo Karlsson (synthesizer), Jackie Pazda (bass), and Mats Wigerdal (drums). After a few concerts, Kitchen booked some free studio time and recorded their first single “Serve You!” in two days. Six months later Patrik Lindvall (guitar) joined the group and the band recorded their second single “Ice Cream To God” in early 1981. Kitchen’s sound was getting darker and heavier and so was the mood in the band. Anne shortly left and was replaced by Iodine Jupiter on vocals. This new line up recorded a few songs for local compilations. The band broke up in November 1981 before recording their debut LP.
Kitchen were part of the new DIY generation starting bands, making self- produced singles and rapidly breaking up. Their sound echoes the speedy chaotic energy with the synthesizer as its driving pulse. Anne’s vocals are barely understandable but they have a sense of urgency. They didn’t’ sound like any other band in Sweden at the time, having more in common with American bands, Devo, The Screamers and Pere Ubu. A CD compilation was released on Ill Wind Records in 2007 featuring all the songs from their vinyl releases plus 11 additional live songs and demos!

Sad Lovers And Giants are one of the best-kept secrets of the '80s; chiming guitars meet with atmospheric keyboards, and the haunting, emotive vocals of the enigmatic Garce. The group formed in Watford, England in 1980, and after the release of several singles and 2 albums, by 1983 they had disbanded, to be mostly forgotten to the record store bins of yore. But the years have been very very kind to Sad Lovers And Giants and their particular brand of pastoral post-punk and wave has grown in stature to the point that original LPs fetch collectors sums. Doing its part to solve this problem is this wonderful numbered limited edition splatter vinyl reissue from Radiation Reissues for RSD 2019. Includes 6 bonus tracks from early singles.

Solo album by Betonkust (Dutch for Concrete Coast). The vinyl comes with a booklet containing drum patterns used on the album, together with a download link of the original samples that you can use for your own music. This record includes a Bandcamp download code for the digital files. Short bio from Betonkust: I was born in Utrecht (1988). I grew up in a very small town somewhere between Amsterdam, Utrecht, and Hilversum. The so-called 'green heart' of the Netherlands. That means there's lots of nature. It was very boring and/or normal. A typical Dutch 1990s upbringing. I've been listening to house music for as long as I can remember. On cassette tapes, on the radio, it was everywhere. Now I live in Rotterdam and there's a lot going on, mainly in the area of electronic music. There is Operator Radio, Clone, Pinkman, etc. Most of my friends are involved in music in some way. The older I get the less I care about gear. I didn't use any expensive or exotic stuff. Korg Electribes (both the sampler and the synth), Korg M1, some Boss effects pedals, a cheap mixer, a Shure SM57 mic, a cheap guitar. For this album everything was recorded in FL Studio. Some tracks on the album started like five years ago with a melody and slowly developed into a full song. Other songs were made one month before mastering. It really depends. But most of the work was done in 2020 and 2021. I think most of this album is about transience, giving up, the infinite sadness of humanity.

"Flux" was originally self-released in extremely limited numbers. Weary of the noisescapes of old, he set out to create long-form minimalism utilizing kalimba, piano, "Mini-Pops Jr." drum machine, and tape loops to create a complex bed of interweaving micro-stasis'. The results of these new experiments were as beautiful as they were perplexing.

A curious dusty fidelity carries these classic tracks across four sides of vinyl, including all of the original "Flux" content. These compositions glow with a sprawling, slow motion haze that's light years ahead of its time. "Flux" reveals wide spectrums of sound from melancholic kalimba and percussion patterns to slowed down, syrupy Exotica. Turman had complex ideas in his mind yet only the simple technologies of the day were at hand. Hear the click of the stopping and starting Tascam 3340 open-reel tape machine as one hand presses the "record" and "play" buttons and the other plays piano phrases. While there are similarities in style to Classical Minimalism, Turman's sound and vision is his own and is exclusive to his limited discography.

Platform 23 is delighted to present music from Colin Potter with It Was, a collection of tracks chosen from his 1989 cassettes Recent History Volumes 1 & 2.

After a burst of activity, mainly on his ICR label, from 1980 - 82, the tapes were the first released music in seven years and highlighted the intervening period.

While much of his earlier recordings have now been reissued by Dark Entries, Deep Distance and Sacred Summits, It Was covers the period where Potter recordings were limited while working as an engineer at his IC Studio, and pre-date his work with Nurse With Wound.

The ambience and guitar of The French Polisher leads to Diary Of A Nobody, an embodiment of Potter, sequencers and guitar against submerged, metallic percussion rising. Dense, claustrophobia follows in Solidarity At Wujeck Colliery towards the guitar refrains of Persistence.

Side two starts with Green Fields, where plucked guitars are surrounded and consumed by arpeggios. Propulsion without percussion, the layers of arps shift and redefine before the scatter of Saw with reversed synths and guitar acting as counterbalance. Nine Months, a possible centerpiece, has an autumnal atmosphere; crashing cymbals and ambulant guitar, leading to the closing Ships That Pass In The Night, a hazy drift of slowly sequenced synths & primitive voice samples.

Completing an album cycle of themes and exploration which began with 2015’s 'Inner Systems', 'The Golden Cage' is perhaps Prequel Tapes’ most diverse and expansive work - utilising the artist’s own vocals for the first time and evolving his production and sound to new, uncharted dimensions.

Working off the trauma of his father’s suicide, 'The Golden Cage' was spawned from a hyper-realistic dream experience which revealed the artist’s path, catalysing new productions and techniques. The result is a striking work of unconventional electronics that journeys through rhythms, atmospheres and experimentations. A true narrative of a continuously challenging personal journey Beginning with the tension-building, free flow of 'My Turn', we then delve into grief and anger with 'I Hate You', which transforms into the pulsating tempos of 'Stranger or Lover'. The glistening nostalgia of 'Last Things' marks the halfway point before grappling with the heavy introversion of 'Alone' and devious energy of 'Mind Corner'. Nearing the end of our trip, 'Without Remission' uncovers the most dance floor tuned
piece while finally the title track closes things out with an energy that will linger long after you’ve listened.

A match made in heaven and hell, since forming in the cradle of Europe Athens, back in 2012, dark synth duo Selofan have paved their own perditious way, reinventing the modern Darkwave scene throughout the continent and worldwide with their prolific creativity and work ethic over the past decade. Through varied experimental synth-scapes conjured with keen ears for sound design, production, and theatrical aesthetics, Selofan rest not on the laurels of just creating highly danceable coldwave infused music, but with together with Joanna Pavlidou's haunting vocals, and Dimitris Pavlidis' throbbing bass guitar, and modular synth compositions, the pair conjure whole other worlds and narratives throughout each album and music video they create. Thus far the Selofan have released 5 studio albums, issued through their own legendary label they curate themselves: Fabrika Records. Through their Fabrika family, Selofan have championed such acts as Lebanon Hanover, and She Past Away, aiding these bands in becoming two of the most popular Darkwave acts worldwide. Drab Majesty even cameoed in a She Past Away video while being hosted by Selofan during one of the band's frequent stays in Athens, and Kaelan Mikla, a handpicked favorite of The Cure, were first championed by Selofan, through the release of the Icelandic Trio's self-titled debut in 2016. In the Spring of 2020, Selofan released the video for the hopelessly plaintive "There Must Be Somebody", the first single from their forthcoming sixth studio album Partners In Hell, the follow-up to 2018's widely popular Vitrioli LP. "There Must be Somebody" is a discordant composition, mimicking the startled song of birds after a disturbance in a wooded enclave on a mountainside, while a magick ritual unfolds. The album itself opens with "Grey Gardens", a menagerie of morose melodies setting a sombre tone for the rest of a bleak record whose sound design and dreamscapes evoke the best sounds of British and German post-punk of the 80s. "Almost Nothing" is a brooding bell-driven track with a dark and pirouetting melody that is the perfect soundtrack to a figurine twirling in a music box. The German language "Nichts" means No, and this song is both sinister and cinematic with sighing keys, shuddering drum machines, and German lyrics sung with sorrowful conviction. "Zusamen", is a word often asked if you are together, or separate, is a dark ballad whose shadowy keys weave a nightmarish delirium, evoking the soundscapes of a lullaby sung in a haunted dollhouse. "4am" is a restless rhythm, whose soft percussive melody tosses and turns alongside subtle bass and string accents overlaid with despondent vocals. "Happy Consumers" sounds like the swirling of a finger drawn upon the edge of crystalline glass, with vocals and drum machines coming emanating from an adjacent room with echoing acoustics, collectively evoking the sound like lingers when the somnambulist wakes from his dream. "Absolutely Absent" hums onward like a phantom train ride that is a one-way ticket to madness, and with the next track "Metalic Isolation" the locomotive beats gather more steam, propelled forward with anachronistic melody. The album closes with "Auf Dein Haut", which translates as on your skin, and the song is both tactile and tenebrous with sensuously dark synth textures amidst howling German vocals that take flight like witches during a sabbat. Tobias Bernstrup is a contemporary musician and video artist born 1970 in Gothenburg, Sweden. He received an MFA from Royal College University of Fine Arts Stockholm in 1998. Using the visual language of pop culture, video games, sci-fi, classicism and gothic noir, he has created a stage persona with notorious live performances. Dressed in elaborate costumes of skin-tight rubber suits and fetish gear, Tobias' external appearance is androgynous. He raises questions about representation of identity, the body and physical space in both virtual and non-virtual realities. Between 1997 and 1998 he self-released two limited CD-R EPs. In 2002 his debut album 'Re-Animate Me' was released by Tonight Records followed by two limited 12' singles for the song 27' and the Italian version Ventisette'.

27' is a 5-song EP collecting 4 different mixes of the title track plus one unreleased song from the 'Re-Animate Me' recording sessions. The material on this EP is closely connected with the world of computer games which Bernstrup also inhabits. Bernstrup's music is influenced by 1980s Italo disco and synth pop, reminiscent of Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode and Ken Lazlo. On the A-side is the original mix at 115 bpm followed by the Lazer Mix set to an faster beat and additional arpeggiations and heavier bass drum beats. Lyrically the song tells the story of a good looking 27-year old boy from a small town searching for love with any man who can spoil him. On the B-side are both the vocal and instrumental of Ventisette', the Italian translation of the song 27.' Both versions of Ventisette' are stripped back compared to the A-side but keep the melodies in tact. Also released for the first time ever is the demo Dirty Money' a Pet Shop Boys influenced song about male prostitutes ready for a night out working the streets.

All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. For the jacket Eloise Leigh transformed the original portrait of Tobias into a Warhol-like painted polaroid with a striking likeness to Liza Minelli with blue eye shadow and red lipstick. Each copy includes a photo postcard with lyrics and notes. I would rather create alternative routes to experiencing and understanding the world, understanding what it means to be human today,' says Bernstrup. We are more artificial than we want to admit.'

Fatamorgana is the Universe, and Ahora Aquí, Todavía No the journey that will take you through it. Patrycja and Louis will be your guides, and with their Bass Station, RX11, JP-8000 and ethereal voices acting as a synth-pop spaceship, all the marvels and mysteries they have seen will be revealed, because they “want to fly and swim at once, forever, in another density”. The Barcelona-based duo continue to hone their brand of electronic post-punk, dishing out beats, hooks and atmospherics in generous servings, and whilst it retains much of the stark minimalism of their first LP (2019's Terra Alta), Ahora Aquí, Todavía No somehow feels deeper, more lush and considered. Clearly influenced by music from the 1980s – synth-pop, new wave, post-punk – Fatamorgana manage to create a sound that avoids standard retro manouevering, landing instead on something distinctly their own - an album made from cold sounds, that in their union become warm. A record that could just as easily soundtrack an afternoon's solitary contemplation as a night on the dancefloor.

Dark Days is the debut offering from Berlin-based Anglo-American trio Deep Heavy Fear. A twelve inch of glimmering pop melodies with a portentous undercurrent, comprised of two tracks from a batch of songs co-produced with cult Bremen synth-pop allies Saâda Bonaire. The A-side's serpentine synth bass and sub-100 bpm mark it for downtempo dancefloor consumption, while the B-side charts a tentative homeward retreat through twilit murmurations. Self-pressed & presented in a hand-printed and numbered multi-colour kraftpak sleeve, designed by band vocalist Chloe Grove. Limited edition of 137 copies.

Rudolf Abramov is taking a step in a different direction from his last release on Höga Nord Rekords. This 7” contains the works of deep mining in an old hard drive during the introversion of the pandemic quarantine. These two gems have been going under a bit of tasteful polishing before reaching the point of release and the result is a punk meets Stoner rock experience propelled by hard sequencers and drum machines.

This record is as English/Irish as you find em: straight forward instrumentation and lyrical performance presented with a dirty and rough production. The beats are stripped with an edgy punch and the synthesisers are overdriven, giving them guitar like qualities.

The Paracetamol/Clonex 7” is a release of covid demons, and the sound of spitting out the bitter taste of isolation, or to use his own words: “On this 7" you will find absurd and desperate lyrics accompanied by heavy English and Irish accents, driven robotic drum machines, dirty synths, crunching bass, and as unpolished as your dad's old Angle grinder. XXX the label returns strong in 2021 with an original EP by none other than The Populists aka Yan Wagner. Yan Wagner has been making a name for himself in the scene for a while now with his distinctive The Populists sound. XXX012 is no different. With three original tracks on the A-side; EBM, minimalistic synth music, banging drum machines, genre bending, different energy styles, but all are functional club tools in their own way. Just what you would expect from The Populists. The B-side contains two remixes by veteran of the scene Marc Houle and fellow Dutchie Coloray.

Savage Grounds return to the never ending warpath with their new EP "Body Weight Compressor". After a one-year break, which was used to collect ideas, machines and material, they are releasing six titles with brooding melodies, sounds from the factory, diystopian texts and authoritative marches. An unnaturally restrained chaos. Being released by Infoline Global it provides a reflection of the city they live in.

The first full length LP for this collaborative project between Jon Brooks (The Advisory Circle) and Jim Juapp (Belbury Poly). John Foxx features on vocals and syanth on two tracks, Trees and Forgotten Towns, reprising his appearance on The Belbury Circle's debut EP, Empty Avenues in 2013.

Brooks and Jupp go back to their musical roots with this release, but there's no weird children's TV or haunted soundtracks here. It's a joyfully re-imagined soundworld that draws heavily on late 70s and early 80s synth pop and library music. An exciting transitional era that first saw the pair taking up synths as kids. With interlocking analogue sequencers, driving rhythms, soaring lead lines, primitive sampling, and its themes of travel and return, the album evokes the eve of the digital era, when "Tomorrow's World" was still an exciting possibility.

After a string of diverse EPs on Swiss labels Light of Other Days & Subject To Restrictions Ethimm returns in winter 21/22 with his debut album. The record delivers snapshots of a hopeless romantic’s life packed into an eccentric mix of genres, all in the spirit of balearic. Fever dreams of Disco, New Wave, Dub and Leftfield Pop echo throughout the 32 minutes. Tales from the jet set, delusions of grandeur and the hangover that comes after, long gone love affairs and one’s raison d’être are among the many subjects Ethimm touches. Distinctly nodding towards the 80ies without falling into cliché references, the album feels familiar yet uniquely contemporary.

The cover art features a bust of producer Elisabeth Thimm’s head, as interpreted by artist Paa Joe. The 12 inch comes complete with a 180g, heavyweight white vinyl with a beautifully printed inner sleeve revealing the albums lyrics.

Thomas Leer and Robert Rental’s ‘The Bridge’ is re-issued on vinyl for the first time since its original release in 1979, and on CD for the first time since 1992. With Robert unfortunately passing away in 2000, this record, Leer and Rental’s one and only album together, stands alone in capturing the duo’s pioneering capabilities.

 ‘The Bridge’ was originally released on Throbbing Gristle’s Industrial Records label in 1979 and is considered to be an early electronic avant-garde synth-pop masterpiece, seeing the likes of John Foxx, Propaganda, Art of Noise and ABC citing the pair as key influences.

 The release of this album aligns with the longawaited London debut of the exhibition ‘From The Port To The Bridge’ which will be held at The Horse Hospital in central London from 21st January until 10th February 2022. The exhibition, which was previously shown in Greenock in 2018, shares the story behind Thomas Leer and Robert Rental and the making of the album.
