East Coast minimal wave institution Xeno & Oaklander’s seventh full-length further distills their iconic noir synth pop into a streamlined suite of gleaming, graceful retrofuturism. Inspired by ideas of synesthesia, scent, star worship, and obsolescent technologies, the duo of Liz Wendelbo and Sean McBride began conceiving the blueprint of Vi/deo while sequestered at their Southern Connecticut home studio during the pandemic. The context of isolation, streaming, and remote dreaming seeped into their chemistry, manifesting as both homage to and meditation on a certain cinematic strain of technicolor fantasy: the screen as stage, distance disguised as intimacy, where tragedy and glamor crossfade into one.



Opening with the precision synthetic melancholy of “Infinite Sadness,” the album marks a peak fluidity between the pair’s fusion of analog electronics and poetic melody, both refined and oblique, classic but contemporary. Wendelbo modeled her singing on “a young boy in a choir,” alternately holding notes and whispering them, with the lyrics clear, the voice elevated. The eighth and latest slate of refined retro-futuristic synth-pop by Liz Wendelbo and Sean McBride aka Xeno & Oaklander is named after and inspired by "the study of what not to do, a negative image of a positive, the other side, the other:" 'Via Negativa (in the doorway light)'. Recorded in the fall of 2023 at their modernist Connecticut home fashioned into a two-story synthesizer laboratory and mixing studio, the album is uniquely visionary in spirit yet precision in execution, a contrast central to the duo’s enduring chemistry. Embryonic piano sketches were translated to nuanced modular systems, which McBride weighted with "harmonic padding," tuned percussion, and a spectral transfer device capable of "rendering spasms of rhythmic overtonal filigree." Despite the technological complexity of their craft, emotively the songs require no deciphering – these are technicolor widescreen anthems of the cybernetic age.

The eponymous opening track sets the pace, soaring sleekly over glittering synths and call-and-response vocals about arias, shattered light, and faces in stereo. From there the record expands and contracts, cycling through a gallery of moods and masks, animated by the band’s fascination with drama, "the idea of personae," and theatrical characters. Track by track, a murky, tragic backstory reveals itself: forlorn figures navigating a treacherous mercury mine, alternately poisoned by fumes or buried in collapsing caverns. The tension between Teutonic, utopian synthetic pop and lyrical narratives of ghosts in silos, ruined mills, and the traumas of mineral excavation creates a compelling friction, alternately futurist and obsolete, elevated and subterranean. Wendelbo describes the music’s polarities perfectly: "The heavy machinic din of extraction in contrast with the enchantment of the mined precious gems and metals."

From bilingual odes to bloodstones ("O Vermillion") to cosmic chrome dance floor classics ("Lost & There" "The present tense can never feel real / So many pasts conspire in the burning sun") to strutting EBM sensualities ("Actor's Foil"), Xeno & Oaklander re-prove themselves masters of the axis of technology and poetry, snaking cables and synesthesia, mining melodies and myths across 15 years of focused artistry. Theirs is a muse still gilded and gleaming, burnished red and silver, attuned to "the unobservable, the unfamiliar, that which you don’t see directly."

Debut from genre-defying producer, Yosa Peit. Laurie Anderson meets Bjork; Prince overlapped with Arthur Russell and the hum of Blue Velvet, with jarred and splintered ambient production reminiscent of Aphex Twin. ‘Phyton’ gets a special expanded edition via Fire Records, featuring unreleased tracks; ‘Tyrann’, a live version of the haunting album track ‘Serpentine’ and end of the night lament, ‘Rise’. ‘Phyton’ is a conundrum with its own humour and beauty amid the electronica soundtracking; it’s a record that’s defied genre categories when first released on Tax Free Records two years ago. Yosa’s ascension from singer to producer is now complete. “In my head I was making a movie,” Yosa told No Wave magazine, “I dreamed up a Coen Brothers’ movie scene for a few tracks.” The result is a haunting, provocative sound; a soundscape where songs merge and splinter, a trip that’s never predictable.

This work was released in 1988 by guitarist Yuji Toriyama, who continues to work as an arranger, producer, and studio musician.

This is his fifth album overall. This work is a culmination of his specialty, the programmed sounds, and it explodes with solid digital sounds.

On March 13, 2020, Yumi Zouma's highly anticipated album, Truth or Consequences, was released. One day prior, the band played their first show of a fully sold-out US tour, at Washington, DC's DC9. This was also the day the Word Health Organization declared COVID-19 an official pandemic, resulting in the band cancelling the entire tour and flying back to Europe the next day - the day of their album's release.

"So after returning home and spending a few numb weeks adjusting to this strange new way of life, April came, the reality set in, and we quickly started to miss that feeling of exploring our new songs by night," the band says. "Writing new music around them, we took the songs of Truth or Consequences and found ourselves a new way of re-contextualising them safely, amidst the tragedy and fear going on in the world outside our windows – and the Alternate Versions were born. We encouraged each other to be bold, fearless, and to experiment like we would on stage – but from the comfort of our own bedrooms, living rooms and hallways.

After almost two years without a release, Naarm 5-piece Zombeaches return with a post-punk whirlwind of a track. A Taste of Oxygen immediately hooks you with its chaotic garage rock sound, with frantic drums, and scratchy guitar lead. The reverb and distortion partnered with a commanding vocal performance create a hypnotic feeling, drawing you in completely.
What sets this track apart is the energy switch from the raw, aggressive energy in the verses entirely flipped to a more brooding chorus with beautiful harmonies, before being taken right back to the madness of the verses, almost experiencing whiplash as a listener.
Amongst this sonic chaos, lyricist James Young shows off his impressive songwriting skills, detailing how exciting and colourful the big city looks from the outside, only to realise how unhealthy the lifestyle can be.
A Taste of Oxygen is our first taste of their upcoming album, which is set for release later this year. This track sounds like it was made to be experienced live in a sweaty, crowded venue, so definitely keep an eye out for that opportunity

Toothpaste Records are proud to announce the first international release from the amazing Zombie-Chang! “Petit Petit Petit” is a new expanded version of the Japanese mini-album release of the same name. The first digital single “We Should Kiss” is available 24th July. “Petit Petit Petit” will be released on 13th September on digital platforms and a limited edition transparent blue vinyl release.

The 10 track album is the second release on Toothpaste Records, the U.K.-based label that focuses on international releases of the cream of the Japanese indie scene. It follows the release of the critically-acclaimed and fan-praised international debut album from Tentenko in 2018.

Zombie-Chang is the moniker of 25 year-old Tokyo-based singer and songwriter Meirin Yung. “Petit Petit Petit” is written and produced by Meirin, and performed with help from the rhythm section of another act based in the Japanese capital, Never Young Beach. The addition of drummer Kento Suzuki and bassist Keigo Tatsumi for these recordings has further developed the Zombie-Chang sound. Having already morphed from her Moldy Peaches-inspired anti-folk first recordings to the embrace of electronic sounds and synthpop (which Meirin called “anti-EDM”) on 2016’s “Zombie-Change” and 2017’s “Gang!”, “Petit Petit Petit” introduced the sound of a cohesive band to perfectly frame Meirin’s strongest batch of songs yet.

Das eigene Album bleibt auf der Strecke. 2014 wird Feminismus noch nicht groß geschrieben. 2016 trennt sich die Band. Beide fangen für sich solo nochmal von vorne an und erfinden sich neu. Pola Lia Schulten arbeitet als Gastsängerin und Live-Musikerin, schreibt Chorarrangements u.a. für Carsten "Erobique" Meyer, Stella Sommer und Pantha du Prince Sie komponiert Musik für mehrere Theaterstücke und veröffentlicht als Pola X 2019 zwei Singles. Chris Schalko zieht nach Berlin, gründet das Soloprojekt Gigolo Tears und spielt Konzerte unter anderem auf der Fusion und in der Berghainkantine gemeinsam mit der Live-Band The Crybabies. 2021 ist die eigene Energie plötzlich zurück und die vielen Versuche ihres Albums noch immer zu schade zum Verrotten. Zucker beschließen sich zu reuniten und endlich ihre Debütplatte herauszubringen.
