Black Marble - It's Immaterial

Released in 2016, It’s Immaterial found Black Marble refining its coldwave and synth-pop foundations into a warmer, more melodic expression of isolation, longing, and quiet resilience. Guided by Chris Stewart’s unmistakable baritone and a palette of analog synths, pulsing basslines, and minimalist rhythms, the album feels simultaneously nostalgic and forward-leaning. Its songs drift between shadowy introspection and subtle hope, creating a cinematic atmosphere that’s both intimate and hypnotic.
With It’s Immaterial, Black Marble deepened its signature sound, offering a collection that resonates like a faded memory—soft, hazy, and endlessly replayable.

"Melodies twist inward and out of the comfort zone, but never overstep their boundaries or demand extra attention they don’t deserve. The fragments that have been found, from beginning to end, click and fall into place almost effortlessly. It’s surprising how nothing feels forced." - Drowned in Sound

Culture Club - Colour By Numbers
  • A1: Karma Chameleon
  • A2: It's A Miracle
  • A3: Black Money
  • A4: Changing Every Day
  • A5: That's The Way (I'm Only Trying To Help You)
  • B1: Church Of The Poison Mind
  • B2: Miss Me Blind
  • B3: Mister Man
  • B4: Stormkeeper
  • B5: Victims

Colour by Numbers was Culture Club's most successful album, and can even be considered as one of the most popular albums from the 80s in general. Scoring no less than five hit singles, this set of songs dominated the charts for a full year, both in the US and in Europe.

With its infectious songs, videos all over MTV, and Boy George as a charismatic appearance, the band was a media magnet back in 1983. The vocals sounded as warm and soulful as ever, resulting in both the burning down the house churner Church Of The Poison Mind' and the irresistibly catchy Karma Chameleon'.

In the 80s music was, in many cases, flamboyant, fun, sexy, soulful, colourful, androgynous, and carefree, and this album captured that spirit perfectly. A must for any collector of 80s music, and the artistic and commercial pinnacle of a band that still attracted new fans years later.

Happy Meals - Fruit Juice

Re-release of Happy Meals' 2nd release.
Fruit Juice is the follow up to Happy Meals' Scottish Album Of The Year-nominated debut album Apéro. Shorter in scale but sharpened and expanded, Fruit Juice takes the tender experimental beginnings and unabashed pop moments of ther first LP into undiscovered countries glowing with possibility.

Since Fruit Juice's original release in 2016, Suzanne Rodden and Lewis Cook have toured the globe, from Moscow to Bangalore via various European festivals, invited to tour by the likes of Liars, Andrew Weatherall and Flaming Lips, and have honed their dynamics live, in the moment, improvising and twisting the beat into new forms. As their live show has become more visceral and cinematic, Fruit Juice documents the duo's new confidence. Run Around opens the E.P., with a sun-soaked tropicalia as conceived by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, Rodden's vocals warped into wordless peons to the rising sun. Lá Lá-bas reaquaints the listener to Rodden's Franco-Gallic tendancies, but this time Happy Meals reveal a sparse melancholy, with spacious percussion and synth fragments giving way to one of the group's most immediate moments to date. If You Want Me Now is pop music, pure and from the source. Alternating between French and English, Rodden recreates the live persona that has emerged since the group's beginnings, an unrestrained performer bringing the innate sensuality beneath Happy Meals' surface exploding into the light.

Cook's production work here sounds fresh and classic simultaneously, a glorious Jacno tribute enthralled to House music and Italo Disco. Fruit Float, opening Side 2, brings us back up into the cosmos, with arpeggiated synths from Cook's synth arsenal duetting with a flute solo before Suivez-Moi delivers another pop song worthy of eternal repeat, a slice of electro not unlike the heady heights of Dare!-era Human League. Seductive and irresistible, it precedes the biggest step-up in Happy Meals' history, the acid-fried Now That You Have Me: ostensibly a high-BPM remix of If You Want Me Now that hints at the insanity of the final moments of a Happy Meals live show.

F Ingers - Hide Before Dinner

Extraordinary new LP from a group comprising Carla dal Forno (Tarcar), Samuel Karmel and Tarquin Manek (Tarcar, LST). Deeply drugged, synth-daubed death-folk and DIY electronics: acutely psychedelic, inscrutable but emotional, sunken but prone to soaring, with flashes of horror too. Beautifully conjures the mirth and murk of childhood summers...a relatable surburban gothic...grazed knees, hide-and-seek, nettle-stings. Trampled flowerbeds and failing light. Ghouls in your neighbour's garden. Think Nico meets Dome or Alison Statton wandering The Pickle Factory after dark...If you dream you die, you die.

Lapsley - Long Way Home Lp

Produktionshilfe für "Long Way Home" leistete Rodaidh McDonald (Adele, The xx, Damon Albarn, Savages).

Naughty Boys (1983) was Yellow Magic Orchestra's sixth and final album to top the Japanese Oricon Pop charts. After that, no Technopop artist was able to reach No.1 until Perfume's 2008 album Game. 'Kimi Ni Mune Kyun' also became the highest charting single by a Technopop artist on the Oricon charts, debuting at No.
2; a record the song retained until Perfume's 'Love The World'
debuted at No. 1 in 2008.

A remix album, Naughty Boys Instrumental was released in July
1983. It contained nearly the entire Naughty Boys album as instrumental tracks in an entirely different running order, as well as the b-side to 'Kimi Ni Mune Kyun', 'Chaos Panic'; and the full instrumental version of 'You've Got to Help Yourself', of which the vocal track was included on Service [MOVLP1473].

Naughty Boys Instrumental featured additional synthesizers imitating the vocal lines, as well as new embellishments and mixes. Several tracks featured sonically updated percussion tracks, while 'Ongaku' featured an acoustic piano soloing over the piece.

Service was the sixth and, at the time, final studio album by Yellow Magic Orchestra. The band dissolved the following year after a world tour, but would later reform in 1993 for a one-off reunion album, Technodon. Each member would continue their already established solo careers, while Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi also formed the band Sketch Show (with Ryuichi Sakamoto assisting), which later turned into YMO.

Like ×-Multiplies [MOVLP1469], it contains a mixture of YMO songs and comedy sketches performed by Super Eccentric Theater, or S.E.T. Service features 'You've Got to Help Yourself', which was previously featured in instrumental form on the previous album, Naughty Boys Instrumental [MOVLP1472].

Yellow Magic Orchestra - Technodelic

1981 was a groundbreaking year for the music industry. By releasing BGM and Technodelic in one year, YMO made a shift happen in Pop music. YMO introduced a new way of using samples and loops by cutting sound bites into fragments and reprogramming them with newly available computer technology.

Technodelic is far more experimental than previous albums, and at the same time their 5th album is more minimalistic and full of Funk and Soul. YMO remained remarkably adept at inventing new ways of looking at compositions and creating a whole new music scene at the same time: Dance.

Martoc - Music For Alien Ears

Martoc

Music For Alien Ears

12inchEM1124LP
EM Records
Release unknown

Martoc, aka Martin O'Cuthbert, has been making alien and alienated synth-pop in the UK since the post-punk period. This compilation gathers six songs released on seven-inch EPs during the years 1978-80, plus four songs released during the first decade of this century !
The tracks show a distinctive stylistic unity, inspired by fellow spirits like Fad Gadget, The Normal, John Foxx and
Kraftwerk, across the decades Martoc has maintained both his close relationship with his synthesizers and an arms-length relationship with society, resulting in an appealingly quirky and individualistic iciness, informed also by his love of science fiction writers such as J. G. Ballard and Iain Banks.

One of the songs included here, "B.E.M.S.", was chosen as
Record Of The Year by John Lydon in New Musical Express in 1978, John Peel was also a supporter. Despite these and other accolades, Martoc and his simultaneously catchy yet disturbing music has hovered resolutely under the radar, an alien craft avoiding detection by an unaware and perhaps unprepared world. Gathered together here, this collection of tracks offers an excellent opportunity investigate an alien explorer.

The Best of the B-52's: Dance This Mess Around is an excellent summation of the group's late-'70s/early-'80s heyday, featuring such staples as 'Wig', 'Give Me Back My Man', 'Song For A Future Generation', '52 Girls', 'Private Idaho', 'Strobe Light', 'Devil in My Car', 'Planet Claire' and 'Rock Lobster'.

It is arguably the best compilation of the group's work. Dance This Mess Around is a first-rate survey of the band's best (and most groundbreaking) years.

X8 Multiplies was released as an EP in 1980. Now this album is something different!

Filled with humor, catchy commercial tunes, instrumentals, computerized vocals and 2 versions of the Soul classic 'Tighten up' by Archie Bell & The Drells, YMO took a break from their serious side and decided to have a go with a more poppy sound mixed with humor and fun.

Still, having said this, X8 Multiplies is phenomenally played! This album will make you want to get up and dance to 'The Number One Dance Band In Tokyo'!

Yellow Magic Orchestra - Solid State Survivor

While Kraftwerk was emerging in Europe and became an influence and inspiration to the Japanese superstars, YMO stayed true to their unique sound.

YMO's second album Solid State Survivor was released in 1979, and represented numerous crossover tracks from Techno to New Wave. Solid State Survivor is probably the most sampled YMO album, as over the years several artists performed numerous covers of 'Behind The Mask'. This extremely popular album peaked at # 1 in several charts all over the world.

Jee Jee Band - Glass Fish

Glass Fish

EM Records
30.09.2015

Here's a tasty treat for all fans of DIY pop music: a multinational confection, the perfect blend of sweet and smart. Based around the core members Matt Jones, originally from Western Massachusetts, and Busan native Jee Eun Lim, who met in Korea in 2011, The Jee Jee Band fuses simple pop structures, airy instrumentation and breathy vocals with clever lyrics, in both Korean and English, often of a satirical or political nature. Currently based in Northern California, the band quietly celebrates Korean culture while also evidencing a cosmopolitan classic pop sensibility, blending K-Pop and other Asian pop elements with a classic and yet contemporary US/UK pop feel. The songs on Glass Fish, all very fresh-sounding, feature performers from South Korea, America, and, on one song, the Khmer-language vocals of Cambodian filmmaker Vanntey Morn. Jones' Western Massachusetts pop roots allowed him to enlist the skills of former members of Sunburned, Sebadoh and others to help record this charming and refreshing release, sure to appeal to fans of the K Label, DIY sounds, and pure pop. Liner notes by Byron Coley."

Victrola - Maritime Tatami

For our 55th release we are launching a special series called Dark Entries Editions, dedicated to 12" singles made for the dance floor. The first release in this series is Victrola, the duo of Antonio "Eze" Cuscinà and Carlo Smeriglio from Italy. The band formed in Messina, but later relocated to Florence to join the rich musical scene there with Neon, Pankow, Alexander Robotnick and Diaframma. Beginning as a 4-piece combo (two guitarists, bassist, drummer) in 1979, they slimmed down to a synthesizer and guitar-based duo a few years later. Their sole release was the "Maritime Tatami"/"A Game Of Despair" EP, from 1983. Using an array of now-classic Roland synthesizers (TR 606, TR 303 Bassline, Juno 6) plus a Korg Polysix and Fender Stratocaster, they crafted two darkwave ballads. "Maritime Tatami" engulfs the listener with trance-inducing synth lines and melancholic vocals over its epic 8 minutes. Oblique minor-key bass lines provide an anchor while snappy, brittle 606 rhythms propel the track along. The lyrics tell the story of Tatami, a boy from a fishing town who yearns for a new life in the big city. "A Game of Despair", on the flipside, is a haunting crawl through the eyes of a woman left by her lover. An angular guitar riff repeats hypnotically, as fragile icy synth lines chime emptily above it. Each song has been carefully remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The vinyl comes housed in an exact replication of the original jacket, and includes an insert with lyrics and never-before-seen photos. Victrola's only release is a truly singular and timeless masterpiece—it's from a dimension of its own

’Still’ is a compilation album first released in 1981 after the death of Joy Division singer Ian Curtis. Their two previous albums had already cemented the Manchester’s band’s iconic status in music history and ‘Still’ filled in gaps.

It featured previously unreleased studio material, two non-album tracks ‘Dead Souls’ and ‘Glass’ and a live recording of Joy Division’s last ever concert, at Birmingham University. The show included the only live performance of ‘Ceremony’ by the band, who later morphed into New Order and released it as a single.

Amyl and the Sniffers are a punk band possessed by the spirit of seventies Australian rock. Amy Taylor (vocals), Bryce Wilson (drums), Dec Martens (guitar) and Gus Romer (bass) are former housemates who formed the band, wrote a handful of tunes and released their debut EP, Giddy Up, all in a span of 12 hours. Taking their cues from a diverse bunch of legends including AC/DC, Cosmic Psychos, Dolly Parton and Die Antwoord, they set out to have as much fun as possible.Amyl and the Sniffers' second EP, Big Attraction, was released in February 2017, kicking off a stellar year for these young punks. Growing buzz around their blistering live show made the band a hot tip at Bigsound in Brisbane, while the band was added to festival line-ups including Meredith and CherryRock17. The band sold out their first headline show at the Bendigo Hotel in September, and were invited to join the Cosmic Psychos on their November/December '17 tour. A stadium show awaits in January '18 with some unknown band, Foo-something or other. With a ton of heat behind them, a debut album due mid-2018, Amyl and the Sniffers are barely off the leash.

Secret Boyfriend - This Is Always Where Youve Lived

Blackest Ever Black's last release of 2013 comes from Secret Boyfriend, the solo project of North Carolina's Ryan Martin, who is also one half of Boyzone (not that Boyzone, unfortunately) and founder of the Hot Releases label - a catholic endeavour that has seen him release records from the cream of the contemporary N.C. underground as well as reissuing classic sides by the likes of Maurizio Bianchi, Ghedalia Tazartes and Ashrae Fax. To date, Secret Boyfriend's presence has been felt largely in the shape of live performances and short-run cassette releases (including Carved At Birth, Furnishing The Void and Skin On The Clock), as well as vinyl splits with Russian Tsarlag and Horaflora. This Is Always Where You've Lived is SB's first LP release and unquestionably his most potent, fully realised work to date. Twelve songs from under the floorboards: a heart-rending but hard-edged synthesis of downer folk, tape experiments, noise etudes and basement-mildewed pop for edgeland fuck-ups, loners and wanderers; recommended if you like Peter Jeffries, Flaming Tunes, Storm Bugs, etc. Arguably comes closer than any previous BEB release to articulating the 'mesmerised suburban daydreams of our youth".

In July of 2009 a-ha released their ninth studio album “Foot Of The Mountain”, which became an instant success. Now, 15 Years later, they are back with that fantastic album for the first time worldwide with a crystal clear vinyl release. The album marks the band’s return to their original sound after world hits like “Take On Me” and “The Sun Always Shines on T.V.”. As Lead Singer Morten Harket puts it: “It was about time that we reached out a little more.” With its typical synth hooks, deep lyrics and melancholic sound, the album creates an atmosphere of nostalgia, that made the band one of the biggest acts in the world. The first single and title track became their biggest success since “ Stay On These Roads” and the album reached number one in Germany as well as Top 10 placements in other countries like the UK and Norway right after its release. Reviews were also great, among them a four-star review from the Times Magazine.

ACT! - Face to Face, Day by Day LP

On August 16, Toronto-based musician and producer David Psutka aka ACT! (fka Egyptrixx / Anamai / Ceramic TL) will release his latest project ‘Face to Face, Day by Day’ for his own Halocline Trance imprint.

This is is Psutka’s third album proper as ACT! following the release of the “sonic mixtape” ‘Universalist’ in 2018 and the augmented reality soundtrack ‘Grey Matter AR’ in 2021; a series of Snapchat filters created by artist Karen Vanderborght and soundtracked by ACT! which explored the poetic and existential potential of AR and social media.

“Aesthetic accidents in the periphery of the ‘work’ can be the message. In 2018, at an Egyptrixx concert at Bagni Misteriosi de Teatro Franco Parenti - a gorgeous, sprawling outdoor pool theatre in Milan - I had a clarifying moment. Gigs around then had mostly been in pummelling, dark music venues, so I wasn't prepared for this expansive space (and the thoughtful work of the organisers who had layered sheets of plastic film on the pool to parallel eco-materialist themes from a previous album). It was the midday soundcheck that struck me most - brittle digital sounds from the set echoed off the colonial Milanese facades and ricocheted down the Via Carlo Botta, pinging off buildings in the distance and clashing with the noise of traffic, tourists and whatever else. It was a strange, collisionist moment, and a reminder that my essential approach to music is, above all, a preoccupation with the materiality of sound.

Everything on Face to Face, Day by Day began as an improvisation. Openness to accidents and the emotional complexity that comes from centering them in composition has become important to my work, and helps the music go beyond the possibility of what is playable, imaginable. I also wanted to channel adventurous solo pop records of the 1970’s and 80’s, like Yasuaki Shimizu, Jon + Vangelis and Stevie Wonder. These came from an interesting era in commercial music as studio production techniques became increasingly formalised as compositional devices, like AMS RMX16 percussion sounds and early digital stereo effects.

Like many musicians, I’ve been travelling and performing less since the pandemic and as a result, have wanted studio sessions to feel more collaborative and improvisational. There were great writing and recording sessions for this album. Vox, synth, sax and guitar jams - much of what ended up on the record isn’t edited much, if at all. I jammed a sm57 into Colin Fisher’s sax bell and created feedback loops using various preamps and distortion units. The clunky sounds were sampled and used as percussion elements. I also had a great synth jam session with Jeremy Greenspan at Barton Building Studio in Hamilton, which was recorded by filmmaker Liz Adler.

I’ve had a few months to sit with this album and see clear throughlines connecting it to previous projects. There are aspects of the experiential and structuralist sound design ideas from the EGYPTRIXX records; and also some arrangement tricks borrowed from ANAMAI - specifically, the use of interruptionist sound events. Perhaps most of all, it feels connected to the Ceramic TL + Ipek Gorgun record ‘Perfect Lung’ and its splattered take on musical complexity. “ (David Psutka)

In addition to ACT!, Psutka has released music with numerous projects including Anamai, Egyptrixx and Ceramic TL, he has collaborated widely with artists such as Junior Boys, Ipek Gorgun, and Kuedo as well as Jessy Lanza (2016) and an official remix for Massive Attack’s ‘Hymn of the Big Wheel (2012). The contributions on this album, from Robin Dann and Ben Gunning, reflect the deeply collaborative nature of the Halocline Trance label and the Toronto creative scene more broadly.

Many of Psutka’s releases have received critical acclaim from media outlets such as Pitchfork, Exclaim, The Quietus and Resident Advisor. As a live performer, he has toured extensively including performing at Sonar Festival, Roskilde, Mutek, MOMA PS1 Warm-UP and CTM Festival. He’s also presented sound installations at various institutions such as Galeria Civica Commune di Modena, and Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO).

In 2015, Psutka launched Halocline Trance as a home for his various sound projects, events and collaborations. Now a creative collective and label, it has grown to include a diverse array of artists including Casey MQ, Xuan Ye, Myst Milano, Colin Fisher and others. The label is described as “genre-agnostic” and conceptually open, supporting work across a wide spectrum of creative fields including soundtrack recording, AR design and traditional artist albums. Their impeccable roster also includes, theorist/improviser Eldritch Priest, and AR/VR artist Karen Vanderborght. In recent years, Halocline Trance has established itself as a platform that facilitates many of Canada’s most exciting creative music projects. Many of the releases have received critical acclaim from outlets including Pitchfork, Exclaim, Bandcamp and Resident Advisor.

Agent Side Grinder - Jack Vegas LP

Jack Vegas is the sixth album by Swedish electro/post punk outfit Agent Side Grinder. It marks the band’s first exploration of American culture, drawing heavily on the beatnik-era works of Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs, as well as the proto-punk and avantgarde movements — while maintaining a contemporary storytelling perspective.

The American dream becomes a symbol for escape from a Europe ravaged by pandemics, war and financial instability. Lyrical themes revolve around boredom, resilience, government and corporate intrusion, and mental health — with the occasional glimmer of light. It’s a drum machine-driven road movie, plotting its course through the desperate heart of rural Sweden.

The name Jack Vegas’ is derived from a Swedish chain of low-stakes slot machines.

The album has been produced by former ASG member Henrik Sunbring, and recorded in Stockholm during 2022.

Genre-wise Agent Side Grinder has always existed in some kind of twilight zone. Deeply rooted in early electronic and industrial music as well as proto- and post punk, their sound is driven by iterative, suggestive beats and sudden bursts of untamed ferocity, built on equal parts dissonant samples and elegant melodies.

Akiko Yano - Gohan Ga Dekitayo

Wewantsounds is delighted to continue its Akiko Yano reissue program with the reissue of her superb double album recorded with YMO at a time when she was part of the group’s touring line up between 1979 and 1980. The album is pure Akiko Yano featuring her superb singing and piano playing, enhanced by touches of YMO’s synth-pop sound (check her cult version of YMO’s classic, “Tong-Poo”). It is the first time the album is released outside of Japan and the deluxe 2-LP set features the original artwork with gatefold sleeve and 4-page insert.
When "Gohan Ga Dekitayo" came out in 1980, Akiko Yano had been touring with Yellow Magic Orchestra for more than a year. She'd play keyboards alongside the three founding members, Haruomi Hosono, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Yukihiro Takahashi, plus guitarist Kenji Omura and Synth wizard programmer Hideki Matsutake (as part of the 1980 North American tour, she'd also feature in the group's cult TV appearance on Soul Train for a memorable rendition of "Tighten Up") and they are all present on "Gohan Ga Dekitayo."
The double LP, whose title could be translated by "Dinner is ready," was co-produced with Ryuichi Sakamoto and recorded at two legendary studios: Tokyo's Alfa Studio "A" and Los Angeles' Sound City. It was Akiko's first shift towards a fuller synth sound following four studio albums mixing Pop and Jazz Funk, including her landmark debut from 1976, "Japanese Girl". A shift that would continue with the release of "Tadaima" in 1981, also featuring the YMO musicians.
?The fourteen tracks featured on "Gohan Ga Dekitayo" find Akiko in top form mixing her singer-songwriter's sensitivity with the electro-pop sound of YMO. It's interesting to note though that it is very much an Akiko Yano album even if the group is present on the album (interestingly they do also play analog instruments on the album). Akiko is clearly the one in charge with a string of beautiful compositions and the rendition of one of the group's classics, "Tong Poo" which she reinvents as a slower, less metronomic-paced song adding her own lyrics.
?Other highlights on the album include "Dogs Awaiting..." an hypnotic composition featuring fascinating electro arrangements or "Coloured Water" sung in English by Akiko accompanying herself on Fender Rhodes with subtle percussion by Tatsuo Hayashi and electronics by Ryuichi Sakamoto.
There are many more great moments on this superb album which announces the further experiments of "Tadaima". "Gohan Ga Dekitayo" is an album that urgently needs to be (re)discovered by her growing international fanbase and Wewantsounds is happy to reissue it worldwide for its 40th anniversary.

ALBRECHT SCHRADER - SOFT

SOFT
