Various - PLASTIC DANCE: VOLUME TWO

Ten more cuts of unacquainted and elusive synth squat-pop, angular funk, metallic jazz and fraudulant disco from the self-propelled imprints and global co-ops. this elasticised series combines rare, unknown and untravelled wax nuggest of night club punk, art school Zeuhl and quasi-political pop united by soldering irons, C-60s and sarcastic synth tones. The second volume in the Plastic Dance series compiled by Andy Votel and Doug Shipton - featuring exclusive liner notes by Andrew Weatherall.

"Greetings sisters and brothers. Let's talk about reductionist revolution and the kicking in of doors. Let's talk of iconoclasts and culture bombs. Let's talk about moral panic and censorship. Let's talk about punk rock.
On second thoughts let's not bother. The white noise is already deafening and actually, thinking about it, the Sex Pistols were really a heavy metal band with a funny singer and the whole shebang eventually, as all revolutions do, succumbed to conservative dogma and self parody. And anyway, as Dr Cooper Clarke said, 'punks were just hippies with zips'.

Instead, sisters and brothers, let's talk about the dangerous counterrevolutionaries who went out and bought a cheap synth and a rudimentary drum machine. The ones that got what 'punk' was really about. The democratization of art. A democratization unhindered by rules concerning the means of production. A democratization forged in the blazing fire of unrestricted influence. A democratization free of perceived notions of 'talent'. Sniffing Glue said learn three chords and form a band, Throbbing Gristle said why learn any chords at all... I am an artist because I say I am. More Marcel Duchamp than Malcolm McClaren.

So, sisters and brothers, who do you think led the counter-revolution Well I'll tell you. It was the man who stormed the Bastille and kicked the door down in the first place and he did it on the 16th July 1977. With the help of Tommy Vance. John Lydon's playlist that night on Vance's show included Tim Buckley, The Creation, Augustus Pablo, Bobby Byrd, Neil Young, Lou Reed, Peter Hammill and Can and put paid to any punk rock 'year zero' claims. Meanwhile, locked out of the studio, Malcolm had to listen to the counterrevolutionary manifesto being broadcast across the metropolis. Mark that date in your diaries, sisters and brothers: 16th July, the anniversary of the birth of 'post punk'. Just over a year later in October, Lydon rammed the point home with the release of Public Image, a personal and musical manifesto in 7' form.

The music on Plastic Dance 2 is the strangely coloured, distorted and frighteningly beautiful fruit of the seeds planted on that fateful day. Lessons learned and inspiration taken from the sonic aesthetics of dub, knowing that not all disco sucked and that even jazz was allowed. Music shaped by wonky approximation and appropriation. The artists on Plastic Dance 2 were artists because they said they were. Listen to their work and you'll know they were. Listen in transcendent wonderment as George Attwell creates alchemical space funk in his home studio... as a future Mock Turtle and members of The Manchester Music Collective channel Robert Calvert and Bill Nelson... as Korzynski comes on like a Jeff Mills remix of Terry Riley. Listen in the wide-eyed joy of being as Stabat Stable's drum machine runs amok to the accompaniment of discordant organ stabs... as a future founder of 808 State channels Albert Ayler alongside a galloping synth arpeggio.

Andrew Weatherall"

26.03.2019

« Remixes » is a meeting of French electronic champions.
French Touch veterans I:Cube and Chateau Flight, trendsetting DJ Raphael Top Secret and newcomers Flegon provide us with remixes of the autumn released LP « Sphere Of Existence » by Antoine Kogut.
Where the LP explored atmospheric and experimental pop, « Remixes » gives us a perfect four tracker that is made for the dancefloor.

On side A, Chateau Flight transforms the title track « Sphere Of Existence » into a 90's Italo house banger while I:Cube does what he does best in his unexpected dub version. On the B side, Raphael Top Secret reworks « Current density » into a Hip House track full of jaunty vibrations and newcomer band/label Flegon fulfilled their goal of working with their all time favorite French Touch pioneer label Versatile giving us a Nu-Disco remix of the song « L 'oeillet noir ».

Phonica Records
25.02.2019

For Phonica's landmark 25th main label release we present the latest 12' from Will Saul.

Will is known to many as the man behind Aus Music and prior to that Simple Records as well as an excellent recent mix for the highly respected DJ-Kicks series. If that wasn't enough to keep him busy he has produced a sizable back-catalogue for his own labels and the likes of Kompakt, Buzzin' Fly and Systematic.

Will's relationship with Phonica goes back a long time, as a core member of staff he worked in the shop in its early days and needless to say, we've been following his career since day one, so it feels right that he returns to Phonica, though this time as an artist on our main label.

A prolific producer, he's explored everything from Micro-House and Minimal Techno to Deep House and Acid. For the 'Lakeside EP', Will unleashes three peak-time House tracks, starting off with the anthemic 'For Joanie' and its heartfelt vocal loops, onto the uplifting and euphoric 'Drama' before rounding the record off with the late 80s electro-pop vibes of 'Never Enough'.

Cologne is Danny Lane and Vasilios Manoudakis - a photographer and a ship captain who make songs together. Vasilios works as a boats captain in New York while Danny stays landlocked, producing tracks and hustling work as a photographer/actor in Los Angeles.
The two communicate with one another through music, sending loops and snippets from wherever they happen to be, independently writing pieces of songs that smoothly snap into
place. Throughout this, the two share a thing for synths and classic pop, creating songs that are warm, relaxed, and inescapably catchy. Though their influences range from 80s dance music to minimal house and ambient music, they see Cologne as something new and have a very pure idea of success: If people like it, we are happy. Vinyl tastes better...

Wraetlic - Ad Absurdum

Ever since hearing Pete Tong announce 'Chica Wappa' as his Essential New Tune back in 2004, we've been following the bold Alex Smoke on his musical journey.

Coming from Glasgow, we've shared a lot of common influences - both from within and outside of the city and we have Alex to thank for introducing and strengthening our love for the likes of Villalobos, Rhythm & Sound, Carl Craig and Actress, amongst others. Although he was a familiar face on the 'minimal' scene, he always operated on his own terms and that's a throughline we've admired throughout his career. Not only is he comfortable releasing techno on Soma and R&S, he's produced for ballet, films and even the NHS.

Over the years, Alex has played at a few seminal parties for us; alongside the likes of Oni Ayhun, James Holden, Helena Hauff and Veronica Vasicka. So we were delighted to be approached by him to work on a record together and it's been really exciting to hear it evolve over time. It would be arrogant to compare it to Thom Yorke's - The Eraser, but it certainly occupies a similar world in our mind. To still be producing innovative and inspiring albums 15 years into a career is no mean feat in this age and it's a great honour to welcome such a musical hero on to the label.

As with the last Auntie Flo album, we're also lining up a very special remix package with a swarm of our favourite producers of the moment and we can't wait to share them with you too over the course of the year.

Various - Organic grids & linear fluids - Triggered Sound/Graphic

2 Tracks by Gustaaf and S&W as an result of the audio/visuell Installation - Organic grids & linear fluids —Triggered Sound/Graphic' by Christian Nicolaus. Brought to you on Vinyl by Turnland Records.

S&W delivers an Rhodes driven Track with moody melodies wich sounds in a way dub-ish without loosing that nice 80´s synth edge.

The Track by Gustaaf follows, in contrast to his debut on Prongof 108, more an darkish electro vibe without trying super hard to sound like Drexciya. ;)

About:
Graphic Designer Christian Nicolaus has developed a sound/graphic contraption that uses a projected grid in an half-open cube. This Installation becomes a classic step-sequencer to trigger and create simultaneous sounds and graphics.
A modular grid is played and individually composed by tracked surfaces
that are placed in the sound/graphic grid.
Completely different sound and graphic combinations are created, which
result in a composition created interactively by the viewer.

In collaboration with Christian Nicolaus and Turnland Records two of the compositions made by Gustaaf and S&W are available on Vinyl (release date: 22.02.2019).
The design of the record is also based on the grid used in the Installation. Through folding the cover, eight different modular combinations are possible. The Record comes with a full booklet describing the process of the Installation.

Automelodi - Mirages Au Futur Verre-Brisé

Das Kanadische Synth-pop-duo Automelodi Um Sänger/produzent Xavier Paradis Präsentiert Auf Seinem Dritten Album "mirages Au Futur Verre-brisé" Eine Brilliante Kombination Aus Kunstvollem Sounddesign Und Prägnantem Songwriting, Das Zusätzlich Mit Seinen Französischen Vocals Alle Freunde Des Synth-pop Zurück In Die Glorreichen 1980er Versetzt.

Brilliantly combining the art of sound design with unforgettable songwriting, Montréal-based synth-pop duo Automelodi is back with their third full-length Mirages au futur verre-brisé out May 3, 2019. As an established and respected staple of the international community of underground hardware enthusiasts, Automelodi is led by the inspiring studio engineering and magnetic persona of singer/producer Xavier Paradis. Showcasing his master ability to design infectious rhythms, rich bass lines, and brooding hooks, Automelodi expertly crafts a listlessly romantic aesthetic embodied by Paradis’ dynamic voice and eloquent French lyrics. Automelodi’s focus on color and arrangement converges taste and technique, making Mirages au futur verre-brisé deeply engaging for both party-goers and analog synth connoisseurs alike.

Paradis was born and raised in Québec, gravitating towards the sounds of post-punk and industrial music in early adolescence. Inspired by the expanding tonal language of electronic instruments, Paradis fully immersed himself in the vocabulary of drum machines, samplers and synthesizers as his primary tools of composition. By the age of fifteen, Paradis was writing pop songs and dark ballads while developing his vocal style and learning to produce his own tracks. In the mid-’90s, Paradis truly formed his musical identity under the solo moniker Arnaud Lazlaud, recording and playing live for many years in the dense music scenes of Montréal. Paradis’ gifted capacity for melodic expression through complex tones began to blossom and caught the attention of the electronic scenes in the US and Europe. Before long, he was releasing albums on labels like Kernkrach (Germany) and Wierd (New York) and by 2006 he assumed the new alias, Automelodi. Since then his discography has expanded to include full-lengths, EPs and collaborations with artists like Liz Wendelbo of Xeno and Oaklander as the duo Liz and László. Paradis further elevated his poignant compositions with the addition of Dillion Steele on guitar in 2015, resulting in a refined and unique lexicon that continues to evolve.

The Misz - The Lonely Crowd

The Misz

The Lonely Crowd

2x12inchMW069
Minimal Wave
22.05.2019

An LP of tracks, taken from various cassette releases, by Belgian synthwave luminaries The Misz (Jan Van den Broeke and Dries Dekocker)! 600 copies on 180 grams vinyl.

The Misz formed in Gent in 1983 by Jan Van den Broeke and Dries Dekocker at a time when they had both just relocated from the country. They lived on the same street and collaborated freely with the limited equipment they had, which always centered around the Fostex 250 4-track tape recorder. They used an unknown monophonic synthesizer, casio synths, roland drum machines, hand drums and guitars through effects pedals, improvising with their voices and often and included friends for additional voices and sounds. They captured these sonic experiments and sometimes released them on cassette in editions of 100-200. They were also included on numerous cassette compilations throughout the 1980s on labels like Mad In Belgium, The Cassette Factory, 3RIO Tapes, Minimart production, Fraction Studio, Cauchy Productions, Home Product, R.R. products, ZNS Tapes, and Body Records. They described themselves as young, immature and bit strange yet totally bold and fearless. They sang about what surrounded them from world politics and environmental catastrophes to love and lust. The songs on The Lonely Crowd span from various cassette releases and have been remastered from their original reel to reel tapes.

Waves LP

yeyeh
23.04.2019

For the label's second release, Amsterdam imprint yeyeh has brought together two musicians from vastly different backgrounds to celebrate the far-sighted musical potential of the Theremin on the 100-year anniversary of the instrument's invention.

'Waves' is the product of two weeks of studio collaborations between award-winning composer and Theremin soloist Carolina Eyck and Eversines, an electronic music producer who has previously released music on yeyeh's sister label ninih. It builds on Eyck's work composing for 'Theremin & Voice', with both artists playing a part in processing, modulating, layering and arranging vocal and Theremin sounds to create six breathtaking electronic compositions.

Varied in tone and execution, the album's six tracks are arguably closer to instrumental pop than academic electronic music. Some tracks bear comparison to the cyclical melodic movements associated with the greats of American minimalism, while others recall the alien, otherworldly futurism of the Radiophonic Workshop, classic ambient music and the sun-bright bliss of early '90s IDM. Yet despite these possible perceived parallels, 'Waves' sits on its own as a stunning work crafted from the simplest of musical elements.

Tor Lundvall - A Strangeness In Motion: Early Pop Recordings 1989-1999

As a visual artist and ambient composer, Tor Lundvall's work often recontextualizes the familiarity of everyday life through abstraction and space. Starting with the snapshot of a moment, Lundvall extracts its underlying complexity of the seemingly mundane and gives sleeping suggestion a presence and purpose. Mainly working sans vocals, Lundvall returned to voice exploration for 2018's A Dark Place, a somber, dark synth album that merged his mastery of textural ambience with traditional pop structures.

Rescued from old DAT tapes A Strangeness In Motion: Early Pop Recordings 1989-1999 are some of Lundvall's earliest completed synth pop works which have remained unreleased until now.

Though Lundvall's work throughout the collection has the recognizable ambient bones and sensibilities he has refined throughout his career, many of the tracks call back to the synth-driven pop of Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, The Human League and New Order, with the common thread being the sparse density and mood created by reservation and the lonely impulse to twist convention, not to rip it up and repurpose it. Rather than 10 disparate ideas, Lundvall's curation of A Strangeness In Motion: Early Pop Recordings 1989-1999 feels like excerpts from a broader work, allowing the listener to fill in the holes and ladder up to his larger themes and concepts, perhaps coloring his prior works in new hues and tones.

'For years I dismissed these songs as naive and youthful relics, but I've grown much fonder of them in recent years along with the memories they evoke,' he says of the decade spanning collection of tracks, many of which were sketched out in his duo with Drew Sullivan, After The Outing. 'Original One', 'Procession Day', 'The Clearing', and 'The Melting Hour' are present here as solo reworkings, originally culled from his sessions with Sullivan. The remaining songs were ideas originally considered for Passing Through Alone (1997) and its proposed follow up, provisionally and playfully titled Femalamania.

'The title was summing up my girl problems at the time and also a silly word spin on Robyn Hitchcock's Fegmania!' he says. 'Sadly, the project was abandoned—a rare decision for me and perhaps the only time I've scrapped an album entirely.'

Molly Nilsson - History

Long overdue reissue of this Molly Nilsson early release (her fourth), now repackaged and reissued via Night School / DSA.
'I hope you die by my side, the two of us at the exact same time, I hope we die not long from now, the two of us at the exact same time'
By the time Molly Nilsson released History, she had already established a fledgling cult status built on homemade YouTube videos and home-burnt Cdrs. Writing from a distance, it's clear that History is the first classic album in her canon and arguably a classic of the 21st Century underground music panorama. While the methodology on
History hadn't changed from Nilsson's previous 3 albums - it was recorded solo at The Lighthouse, Nilsson's home studio based on a Berlin crossroads - on this record the songwriting reached a new peak and the
emotional scythe cut deeper. Here, Nilsson managed to combine a cosmic, outward looking perspective with an intimate knowledge of the human condition and its place in these turbulent times. In truth, no other songwriter has excavated the modern psyche so clearly and perfectly.

The tracklist to Nilsson's fourth album reads as an early greatest hits for Molly Nilsson followers and also serves as the perfect entry point to a whole world the artist has been building for the last 10 years. In Real Life crystalises the millenial obsession with relationships built online, with a generation paying for the baby boomer's excesses with their anxiety towards the harshness of every day life. It's a call to arms for a generation who fell in love on Skype. On I Hope You Die, one of Molly Nilsson's most iconic songs, the songwriter flips the song title into a tale of doomed romance, a relationship based on miscommunications and the thrill of the other. It's also one of the most heartfelt songs full of pathos written by anyone, an ode to obsession. Doomed romance, life lived on the flipside of day and the role of the outsider in society are themes that crop up through-out History. On Bottles Of Tomorrow, the narrator is sweeping up, in love with the night and examining the remains a society
leaves behind.
On City Of Atlantis, Nilsson veers from the plaintive balladry she had begun to make her name with, embracing trance-like synth and dance music details to create an unlikely anthem using the mythological city as a means to comment on the patriarchal rendering of history by power. With by now trademark panache, she turns complicated subject matter into a glorious song that transforms into an ecstatic pop moment.
Hotel Home, another Nilsson classic, paints loneliness not as a debilitating anxiety, but as a powerful tool that propels the artist forward through her travels. It's a song that hints at an endearing self-awareness also; the writer is never at home, living life on the road, content that 'the world will find me when the time is ripe.'

- LIMITED EDITION OF 1.000 INDIVIDUALLY NUMBERED COPIES ON WHITE VINYL

'60s icon Marianne Faithfull released her commercial album Dangerous Acquaintances in 1981. The album, whose title refers to the French novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses contains amongst others the song 'For Beauty's Sake', which she co-wrote with Steve Winwood. She moved back to the mainstream rock territory and released some incredible tracks, like 'Truth, Bitter Truth' and 'So Sad'.

There are few people who can say they were discovered by The Rolling Stones, had a relationship with Mick Jagger, had several songs either inspired by or written about her, such as 'You Can't Always Get What You Want' and 'Wild Horses' by the Rolling Stones and 'Carrie Anne' by the Hollies. On top of that have overcome some serious drug addictions. And despite - or maybe thanks to the fact - that she has an impressive body of work, it's never quite clear what Ms Faithfull's roots are or what she's going to do next.

Dangerous Acquaintances is available as a limited edition of 1.000 individually numbered copies on white vinyl.

Beta Evers & Alienata - Devotion EP

Discos Atónicos is proud to announce their new release: The Devotion EP a rare split 12" of the legendary queen of darkness, Beta Evers, and the founder of Discos Atónicos, Alienata.

Beta Evers has landed on Side A with 2 special tracks perfect for dark electro lovers and obscure diggers alike.
Predictions, is an unreleased track written & recorded during the years 2007/2008. Dark bass lines, paranoid bleeps, snares that spank the mind and the unmistakably sexy voice of Evers make this track perfect for the more obscure dance-floors.
Bodyvolt Mix, has Miss Evers digging into her back catalog, revisiting a track originally released in 2003 by Dutch Label, Creme Organization titled Only For My Satisfaction. 15 years later, the synths have seemingly multiplied creating a stronger and dirtier version - You can feel the latex in your face.

Alienata finds herself on side B featuring her 9 minute trip titled Memory. The track was composed and recorded in one take at the Nation Studios in Chicago in the winter of 2012. Alienata flexes a far reaching knowledge of genre bending with this one featuring influences from Gothic-Balearic rhythms to a Chicago house touch reminscent of the legend, Mr. Fingers. To sum it up in a few words,
Hypno-beats for psychedelic minds

Some of the most beloved music comes from heartbreak and loss. This 5-track EP by Honey Soundsystem's Be´zier was recorded in a vacant apartment unit in his grandmother's ('Amah') property in Tainan, Taiwan. Having to make the 15+ hour journey from SF to Taiwan multiple times in 2018, Be´zier set up shop in Amah's house surrounded by his live touring setup, a microphone, and the memories of loved ones recently passed. Away from his San Francisco analogue synth-based studio, Robert Yang (aka Be´zier) manipulated samples of his own vocals and mobile mono synths to tell his stories about returning home, honoring ancestry, and embrace life's hardest challenges. The result is a deeply personal release with track titles named after landmarks surrounding Amah's building, and songs both short and long, free of genre and tempo restrictions.

Naked Lunch - 80s Singles

Peripheral Minimal is proud to present, collated for the first time, all three of Naked Lunch's 7" singles, repackaged into a stunning 12" E.P., with printed inner sleeve.

Naked Lunch are an English band formed in 1979, by Tony Mayo. Later joined by, Mick Clarke. In preparation to play live further members were advertised for and Tim Yorke, Paul Nicholas Davies and Cliff Chapman joined and then, in 1981, by Mark Irving who replaced Tim.

The band was one of the first fully synth based groups, and as such were featured on the Some Bizzare Album alongside, Depeche Mode, Soft Cell, Blancmange and The The.

A brief history of the band includes the fact that as early as 1979 they performed in a show alongside the likes of Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft, Cabaret Voltaire, Fad Gadget, B-Movie and Clock DVA, organised by the band and Stevo Pearce (Some Bizzare Records). The band undertook the Naked Lunch's 'Electronic Indoctrination Tour' in 1980 which included a show at Leeds Futurama Festival. Naked Lunch then set about helping Pearce find artists and recordings to make up the Some Bizzare Album to which the band itself contributed "La Femme" (a song originally called "Le Femme" but Phonogram who released the album was licensed to change it to the grammatically correct French, missing the point of the androgyny of the electronic music scene and that the song was about that).

After a parting with Pearce, Naked Lunch became managed by Ramkup with the now 'infamous' single, "Rabies" being released, though it suffered from a ban on daytime radio play due to the title, it received good airplay and support from the likes of John Peel and Nicky Horne on their nighttime shows. Line-up changes continued before the band split in 1981 with Mayo retaining the name Naked Lunch. A second version of the band emerged as a live act until 1985. Naked Lunch were then resurrected in 2010 and continue to this day!

TRACKS A1 + A2 Taken from the 7" 'Rabies / Slipping Again'. Originally released on Ramkup Records 1981 CAC003.

TRACKS A3 + B1 Taken from the 7" 'You Tie Me Down / Laugh Your Mind Away'. Originally released on Pleazure Records Ltd. 1984 PLZS341.

TRACKS B2 + B3 Taken from the 7" 'Make Believe / Breathe'. Originally released on Pleazure Records Ltd. 1984 PLZS843.

  • 3: Inspriation!
  • 4: An Empty Room
  • 5: Nothing Is
  • 6: Want
  • 7: Second Death Of My Face
  • 8: Overnight Phenomenon

W. H. Lung have allowed this album to naturally gestate over the course of two years . The result is a remarkably considered debut - the production is crisp and pristine but not over-polished, the synths and electronics radiate and hum with a golden aura and the vocals weave between tender delivery and forceful eruptions. There is a palpable energy to the songs, as experienced in 10 glorious minutes of opening statement 'Simpatico People'.
'I think it's important to erase the distinction between 'high' and 'low' culture,' states Joseph E. This colliding of worlds not only exists in the potent mix between whip-smart arrangements, lyrics and seamlessly danceable music but also in the fact that they are named after a cash and carry in Manchester. As Tom P. explains, 'I thought it was funny juxtaposing those kind of austere associations with W. H. Auden and other initialed poets, writers, artists, etc. with the fact that it's really just a Chinese supermarket.'

Museum Of Love - Marching Orders

Mahoney's voice vacillates smoothly between ghostly and falsetto, while McNany's arrangements and instrumentation bump, click, and whirr like a lovingly tuned Rube Goldberg jukebox. Not too surprising, perhaps, considering they named the band after a song by schizophrenic outsider favorite Daniel Johnston, and they cite Harry Nilsson and Roxy Music as influences. - VIBE

  • A4: Music For Chameleons
  • B1: This Is My House
  • B2: I, Assassin
  • B3: The 1930'S Rust
  • B4: We Take Mystery To Bed

Restored from the original analogue tapes, presented on
HD audio.
Pressed on dark green vinyl.
Originally released in 1982, 'I, Assassin' is Gary Numan's
sixth studio album and fourth under his own name.
Combining fretless bass with heavy rock drumming,
Numan further refined his dark, sparse, funky-electro style,
mixing it with impenetrable, slurred vocals.
Numan recorded and wrote most of the music between
January and March 1982, following his infamous round
the-world trip in a light aircraft and a near-death crash
onto a British road while co-piloting a spiralling Cessna.
Three of the album's songs made it into the UK Top 20.
According to Numan, who was still only 24-years-old at the
time, 'the round-the-world flight, the plane crash, these
were big things that helped me shape a new opinion of

myself. Those experiences gave me a self-confidence, a
genuine strength that I hadn't had before.' Twenty years
later, the singer enthused, 'I still think it's one of the best
albums I've made.'
I, Assassin's heavily percussive approach led to several
tracks becoming unexpected intruders on American
dancefloors, notably the 12' single of 'Music For
Chameleons' and a specially remixed US version of 'White
Boys And Heroes'.
'I, Assassin' stands out as a record fiercely propelled by
powerful rhythms in songs laced with an earthy cynicism.
''I, Assassin' also utilizes the warped elasticity of fretless
bass lines underneath his customary monotone vocalising
and abstract lyricism. Highlighted by the upbeat synthetic
funk of 'We Take Mystery To Bed' & 'White Boys', 'I,
Assassin' is an in-depth examination of genuine dance
music roots.' - URB Magazine

Machine Jazz
15.11.2018

With a string of resonating releases and progressively improvised live-shows, ANNANAN have been expanding and refining their stylistic range across gritty Acid psychedelia, explosive, dark-waving Electro and a raw blend of Techno and House that is as fierce as it is fragile. The duo's first album on their own imprint MACHINE JAZZ does take all of this into account - and yet it's crucially different to everything else they've put out so far. - You' is a captivating electronic pop adventure, an experimental amalgam aligning Anne Ghost's polymorphic lead vocals with Tom Aaron's vast and versatile analogue productions in unexpected ways. Dominated by reduced rhythms and a carefully crafted melodic shape, the result of this dialogic fusion are irresistible, forceful songs that draw from diverse contemporary and traditional sources: you'll even hear Trap fragments, an R&B trained voice, reminiscences of the Knife as well as cinematic synth excursions. While exhibiting a broad set of moods, claims and longings, the LP attains emotive poignancy from beginning to end through its bold openness. Annanan's first album is stripped down, immediate and full of surprises - but don't you worry, there's no lack in bang either!

Emily Reo - Only You Can See It
  • A1: Phosphenes
  • A2: Ghosting
  • A3: Candy
  • A4: Fleur
  • A5: Counterspell
  • B1: Strawberry
  • B2: Balloon
  • B3: Sundowning
  • B4: Charlie
  • B5: In Theaters

Only You Can See It is a devastatingly beautiful collection of prismatic pop songs reckoning with the complexity of self-possession. Following the release of her acclaimed 2013 full-length Olive Juice, Reo spent five years writing, recording, arranging, producing and mixing these ten songs—at her apartment in Brooklyn, and at various studios and friends' homes around New York. It's her most intricate web of poetry yet, with prismacolor melodies winding through a vast pop vision. Reo employs her classical vocal training more than ever, her sweeping falsetto delivering doubletime verses brimming in metaphor and mesmerizing layered soundscapes alike.

For over a decade, Reo's vocoder pop songs have played with the space between natural and metallic sounds—with every turn of her voice sounding sweeping, symphonic. Recording and touring independently since the release of 2009's Minha Gatinha, she's continuously released a slow drip of pop experiments via artist-operated imprints. On her 2016 single 'Spell,' Reo grappled with all-consuming anxiety, numbness and isolation; here, throughout her latest album, with alternating grace and playfulness, she maps out a constellation of lived experiences that brought her back to feeling herself—facing loss, heartbreak, and death, but also fighting for her health and independence.

Reo's songs have always been imaginative, and here she considers the space between imagination and truth with a heightened sense of tension that seems to have been bubbling under the surface for a lifetime. There are self-combusting soaring synth riffs, sparseness and then engulfing chaos. Melodies that unfurl into melodies (some of which came to her in dreams). On 'Candy', she continues her inquiry into the artificial versus the organic, a song about digitally-facilitated relationships; through robot sounds, she wonders about the confusion of feeling close to someone through a screen, sung from the perspective of someone falling in love with a machine.

'Balloon' is the record's most patiently unfolding mini-epic, one bursting with the enormous energy of an expanding heart; an ode to intuition and growth. It's a song that eventually floats upward as Reo's vocals criss-cross like a hypnotic choir-of-one, meditating on navigating multiple relationships, and the necessity of self-reliance as a prerequisite for them.

These are the first songs that Reo filled out with the help of a live band, multi-instrumentalists Jack Greenleaf and Felix Walworth, adding a visceral energy throughout, with unexpected builds and breaks. Featuring select additional collaborators, namely Warren Hildebrand (Foxes in Fiction) and Julian Fader (Ava Luna, Gravesend Recordings), Reo's singular vision grew illuminated by additions of live drums, guitar, bass, piano, synth, harp, theremin, and sax.

'Ghosting' is her most personal song to date - as she sings about tracing her anxiety and sobriety, her words are clearer than usual, like a voice that has been yearning to escape. 'It outlines my experience with mental illness - depression, anxiety, OCD - and how it made me unable to live even though I was alive,' Reo says. 'It's about feeling trapped inside your mind, not living your life, not knowing if you're really living, if this is what your life amounts to.' So often, the experiences, anxieties and illnesses that define us aren't visible to anyone else; only you can see it. Later, 'Counterspell' is about overcoming the illness she laid out on 'Spell', using the latter track's repurposed vocals to show 'how anything can be reversed.'

In contrast, the buoyant side B opener 'Strawberry' feels all the more powerful, a feminist banger about everyday condescension under the gaze of patriarchy, about navigating fragile male egos in music scenes and beyond: 'Wish you had earned that PHD! In R-E-S-P-E-C-T! How many girls in this city are getting T-I-R-E-D' she belts out. Against the backdrop of 'Ghosting' and 'Counterspell,' it feels like a victory—the thrill of hearing an artist coming into her own voice. Only You Can See It honors what can be the most challenging sight to see: to truly recognize yourself.

Adult. - This Behavior

Adult.

This Behavior

12inchDAIS123LP
Dais Records
17.10.2018

ADULT. '20 years ODD.'
Over the course of the last two decades, Detroit-based duo ADULT. (Nicola Kuperus and Adam Lee Miller) have released six albums and nineteen EPs and singles across some of our favorite labels: Mute, Ghostly International, Thrill Jockey, Clone Records, Third Man Records, and their own label, the revered Ersatz Audio. November 1998 marked their first release: the five-song 12" 'Dispassionate Furniture'. This September, twenty years later, Dais Records is proud to announce ADULT.'s seventh full length album: THIS BEHAVIOR.
The album began as 23 demos written and recorded in a remote cabin in the woods of Northern Michigan during the dead of winter. In total isolation, and with a reduced amount of gear (a modified version of their live setup) on the cabin's kitchen table, the duo were completely immersed in an incessant inescapable studio of their own making - looping, repetitive analogue sequences grinding away day and night. At the end of the intense demo session, a handful of peers were enlisted by the band for the difficult task of paring down the demos into the final album.

The result is 10 tracks of uncompromising dark electronics, showcasing ADULT.'s return to aggressive and energetic dancefloor mastery. Album opener 'This Behavior' alongside the follow-up 'Violent Shakes' (which ascends into synths wailing like warning sirens over Kuperus's commanding vocals) set the stage for an on-edge listen, while the heartbreaking 'Silent Exchange' unfolds as a beautiful sad synth dirge.  'Perversions of Humankind' breaks the mood - driving the listener into a slow and low groove before the frantic album midpoint of 'Irregular Pleasure'. 'Does The Body Know' is the album's post-punk anthem, with irresistible singalong 'we're out of order - we're undefined!' The latter half of the album drives forward with 'On The Edge (You Put Me...)' and 'Lick Out The Content', refusing rest and demanding movement and response. 'Everything & Nothing' emerges slowly from sparkling synth textures, snowballing with nervous energy into an acid techno stomper before the album comes to a close on the icy landscape of 'In All The Debris', a goose-bump inducing slow electronic mantra that closes the curtain on a massive album.

Artist statement on the album's writing process:
'It's confounding how often we negate the importance of disconnecting, getting weird, getting lost. Discomfort and joy intertwined. Day to day, theatrical self-presentation set to rest in our frantic social world. Public becomes private, almost too private. Looking out into frozen woods as you deliver your vocals. For who For what Taking walks along icy shorelines as you try to overcome writer's block, as you try to overcome yourself. Not seeing anyone for days and weeks on end. Overwhelming thoughts and feelings come rushing in; anxiety, fear, purpose, banality, futility of task, power structures, power struggles, pointlessness, collapse. You're faced to face yourself. Your awareness is heightened. You are neither here nor there. You are in a liminal state As you work in this isolated cabin your windows become mirrors.'

"Are we distortions. Are we distortions, perversions of humankind. Are we distortions. Are we distortions, twisted somewhere in time."

The Faint - Egowerk

The Faint

Egowerk

12inchLBJ279LP
Saddle Creek
15.03.2019

At its genesis, social-media platforms posited themselves as new, innovative ways to connect with friends and family. You could share and promote your work, trade insights on the latest pop-culture phenomenon, coo over a friend’s new pet or baby—the possibilities seemed as boundless as the Internet itself had in the early ‘90s. But as one platform begot another, and then another, the proverbial milk started to curdle. Especially in the last decade, as algorithms evolve, Facebook and Twitter have morphed into warped personalized mirrors, where users can gaze at and react to left- or right-leaning news sources, specific-to-them advertisements, and—perhaps most relevant—fiery political opinions. Facebook in particular has become a breeding ground for hate speech and bullying, among other issues.

This is precisely what troubles Omaha electro-punk pioneers The Faint on their forthcoming seventh studio album, Egowerk. “Social media is turning well-meaning people into self-important cruel monsters,” asserts lead singer Todd Fink. “Egowerk’s focus is on the current social state of the Internet: an amazing world of free knowledge, communication, and opportunity is proving to be a toxic battleground. One where the people most sure of their opinion are quick to take a stand and destroy anyone who doesn’t agree with them.”

His sense of urgency unfurls over the album’s frenetic, cacophonous tracks. Opener “Child Asleep” echoes well-loved Faint singles from the Danse Macabre days, with rapidfire techno beats that sear so hot, your forehead will break into a sweat regardless of proximity to a dance floor. And though the synths should sound familiar to any Faint follower, the song’s monotone message is at once classic and current: “If I was wise, I would see I’m a child still asleep.”
Elaborating further, Todd says, “It would be amazing if I could wake up from the world that I think I'm awake in already. If there’s a better way of understanding life, I'd love to be privy to it. You see the wisdom of all Gurus in the East, and you know they're not bothered by this or that. They've attained something, and the rest of us are just kind of banging into stuff, trying to figure out what to do with our lives.”

But in terms of music creation, the band, which also includes drummer and backup vocalist Clark Baechle, keyboardist Graham Ulicny, and guitarist and bassist Michael “Dapose” Dappen, is very much wide awake. It’s been four years since the Saddle Creek flagship act dropped a proper studio album, and more than two decades since they first tore onto the Midwest scene, alongside area staples Cursive and Bright Eyes, with anxious electro-pop-punk anthems that meshed doomsday themes with thudding dance-floor hooks.

Now with their latest effort, the group began to construct Egowerk shortly after releasing their 2016 career-spanning record, CAPSULE:1999-2016, with Baechle making frequent trips back to Omaha from his new home in Philadelphia to mix the record. “We came up with the foundation of nearly an entire song each day, every day,” says Fink. “We worked really fast and made a lot of progress at the beginning.”

“As a band, we did the whole record ourselves,” says Baechle, who also oversaw the production on Egowerk. “We voted to produce it as a band. For me, personally, this was the biggest difference between this album and others.”
Recording at Enamel Studios in Omaha, The Faint composed 11 blistering tracks that explore society’s current relationship to, well, themselves. “I have work to do on my ego, and so does everyone else,” says Fink. “It's become really noticeable with the state of the world, especially when we're on communications platforms, social media and all that stuff. We have to ask ourselves why we're doing what we're doing. Is it an ego trip? Are we trying to make other people do what we wish we would do? Or are we just trying to feel better than other people and taking people down?”

- LEGENDARY 1983 DEBUT-ALBUM
- LIMITED EDITION OF 1.500 NUMBERED COPIES ON RED VINYL

With Sympathy is the debut album by Ministry, released in 1983. Ministry's members at the time being Alain Jourgensen and Stephen George. The album could be considered more synth pop and new wave in comparison to the harder Industrial heavy metal style the band developed later on albums like Twitch and The Land Of Rape And Honey. Jourgensen's fake English accent was an homage to the new wave bands he loved at the time. Three singles were pulled from the album: 'Work For Love', 'I Wanted to Tell Her' and 'Revenge', the latter of which got a video.

With Sympathy is available as a limited edition of 1.500 individually numbered copies on red vinyl.

Xeno & Oaklander - Hypnos

Xeno&Oaklander

Hypnos

12inchDAIS129LP
Dais Records
16.04.2019

As a musical act, Xeno & Oaklander (Sean McBride and Liz Wendelbo) conflate a rich love of analog synths, melody, and mythology with eloquent nuance and a nod to the heritage they draw from. While that construct is the duo's immediate kiss and crush, there's a deeper importance to their collaboration which began in 2004. As evidenced in their debut Vigils (2004), McBride and Wendelbo's artistic dynamic is more than just a mutual love for electronics but a contrast between architectural precision and painterly expression. From the film scores to the traditional albums they've recorded in their Brooklyn studio, they've both spurred and fostered the global synth wave revival through a commitment to analog-only production and performance as well as a strident respect for the medium.

On their latest album Hypnos and first for the Dais imprint, the duo leveraged the talents of visual artist and live sound engineer Egan Frantz to mix the album. It's a touch that adds both punch and balance, allowing their inherent conceptual voices to converge into a collage with defined edges and warm, synapses of frequency and beat.

'Musically, Hypnos is a return to polyphony after several years of using strictly monophonic synthesizers,' McBride says about the album's ethos. 'This has brought dense harmonies and a more complex counterpoint to the composition. Staying with the same equipment and processes without the inveterate compulsion to update and refashion allows for a clearly perceivable genealogy with our previous work.'

'I felt the desire to tell mythical stories, I also wanted my voice to sit strongly in the mix,' Wendelbo explains. 'I channeled the spirits of 60s French Pop chanteuse Françoise Hardy and 80s New Wave New York icon Tina Weymouth.' Her intentions are best evidenced on the tracks 'Angelique,'and 'Insomnia,' the former a spry track sung in French, against a springy rhythm. Laden with expanding and contrasting frequency and a penchant for strategic rhythm, Hypnos juxtaposes dance with distance, creating an immersive oeuvre that exudes contrast and control.
