Celebrating his recovery to full health, Gordon Giltrap has teamed
with Paul Ward to create this beautiful collection of tunes, 'Te Last
of England'. Released on vinyl by independent label, Psychotron Re-
cords, 'Te Last of England' is an innovative new album that blends
the many infuences that have inspired Gordon throughout his
career to create a sound that warms the heart and soul. He thinks it
is possibly his best album so far.

Gordon's melodic guitar sound marries perfectly with the key-
boards of Ward to create a harmonious collection of tunes inspired
by the painting by pre-Raphaelite artist Paul Maddox Brown. Key-
board layer and producer Paul Ward has a number of credits to his
name including work with David Jason and Martin Kemp.

Te vinyl loses a couple of tracks but more than make up for this
with the fantastic sound quality of this super pressing. Only 500
copies made with super shiny gatefold sleeve which really shows of
the Ford Maddox Brown painting, and pressed on orange vinyl.

Te Cd has spent several weeks towards the top of the Amazon Folk chart.

Madeline Kenney - Night Night At The First Landing
  • 1: Don't Forget // There's Room
  • 2: Rita
  • 3: Witching Hour
  • 4: John In Irish
  • 5: This Way // You're Happy
  • 6: Always
  • 7: Big One
  • 8: Waitless
  • 9: Uncommon
  • 10: Give Up // On Anything

Madeline Kenney begins her new album with a helpful reminder: 'Don't forget, there's room for you.' The declaration is meant to lay to rest unnecessary competition. The universe is pretty large. It's a fitting welcome to Kenney's debut full-length, Night Night At The First Landing. The record is framed by meditative, repetitive recordings that each offer some kind of encouragement. "Don't you worry about a thing, you're fine." "I won't give up on anything now." The trip on Night Night is deciding whether the narrator is full of confidence or talking to themselves privately.

Kenney began working on the record immediately after completing her first EP, 2016's Signals. As with Signals, Company Records label head Chaz Bundick (Toro Y Moi) was on hand as producer, but with Kenney as the arranger and key creative force, Night Night reveals more of the artist. Kenney wrote and arranged all the songs and tracked most of the instruments at home.

"No one's a hero for just being strong," Kenney sings on first single 'Rita,' letting us know it's about action and how that strength is utilized. It takes guts. The song bursts with an exhilarating guitar workout providing a clear-headed version of distorted bliss. Similarly euphoric is a math-y tapout on 'Witching Hour.' Narratives of people and how those people affect others are surrounded by musical worlds of echo and propulsion. The melody through-line of 'Always' is a transfixing piano part of royal heritage. 'Big One' is a lyrical puzzle and a musical skip across happy times.

The album is unavoidably dreamy, dipping into sweet fuzz while usually sailing through smooth, crystalline production. The songs are about people, and though people sometimes disappoint, this record is meant to comfort. Fall into it and imagine the clouds scooping you up, or the changing tide's ripples gliding you past a gentle moon's new reflection.

Whenever you combine the greatest men in their trade, you get genius. The album is an amazing compilation of talent and song writing. These men are legendary country music singers on their own, and when you combine them, you get something special.

Highwayman 2 is the second studio album released by American country supergroup The Highwaymen, which reached #4 on the country album chart. The Lee Clayton- penned song Silver Stallion' was the first single and made the country Top 40. The album was nominated for a Grammy for 'Best Country Vocal Collaboration'. Highwayman 2 was produced, once again, by Moman. Six of the songs were written or co-written by members of the group.

In that light, John Lee Hooker took a break from his Chicago electric blues recording career and returned to his country blues roots with an acoustic blues LP that featured the stripped down sound of just Hooker and his acoustic guitar. Essential acoustic blues reissued on 180 gram LP with download code.

Emma Russack - Permanent Vacation

Permanent Vacation

  • 1: Migration
  • 2: Idealisation
  • 3: Permanent Vacation
  • 4: Everybody Cares
  • 5: Free Things
  • 6: Blonde
  • 7: Body Goals
  • 8: Dream Man
  • 9: The Way
  • 10: All My Dreaming

Some people love to work, some people love to vacation. Thankfully for us, Emma Russack loves to do both! The concept for Permanent Vacation - the fourth album from Melbourne-based singer-songwriter, Emma Russack - stems from a lack of guilt about not having a 'real job'. Emma explains, 'I had some well-paying gigs last year, which meant that for 3 months I was literally just going to the beach, reading and lying in my parents' hammock - without feeling guilty.'

It was during this time on the New South Wales south coast, while sun tanning, that Emma struck pen to paper and wrote the majority of the songs for Permanent Vacation. Playing the same piano on which she learned as a child, you'll hear her tinker away on the keys, from opening tear jerker 'Migration' to the confessional 'Free Things', where Emma admits, 'sometimes I wish I had a partner', and on the haunting 'The Way' - perhaps one of the most strikingly beautiful songs Emma has ever written. While instrumentation is noticeably pared back on this album, the song structures and tempos are as intricate and varied as ever; from the calypso feel of title track 'Permanent Vacation' to the anthemic chorus of tongue-in-cheek single 'Everybody Cares' where Emma dryly proclaims 'everybody cares if I'm not at the party.'

Discussing the concept behind 'Everybody Cares', Emma explains: "Some people think that your friends aren't really going to miss you or be annoyed if you don't show up to some kind of social gathering that you've said you'd attend. I decided this couldn't possibly be true in my case - surely I am THAT much fun that everybody cares if I'm not at the party. Speculation Certainly - but I like to think that's how it is.'

Overall, Permanent Vacation is a less confessional album than any of her previous works, In a New State (2016), You Changed Me (2014) or Sounds Of Our City (2012). Emma explains, "For the first time in a long time, the songs came out of contentment and reflection - as opposed to some kind of existential crisis or breakup.'

The album was recorded very quickly with producer John Lee, who worked on In a New State. Emma played all guitar and piano, and John played bass and drums. It was tracked in a mere 3 days, with minimal follow up work.

Leonard Cohen - Live In Los Angeles April 18th, 1993 - Fm Broadcast

The Future World Tour began in late April, 1993, in support of The Future, Cohen's 1992 album. It was the only tour Cohen would go on in a nearly 20 year period (1999-2007). Just prior to the first date of the tour, Cohen and his group recorded a live set at The Complex in Los Angeles, for a live radio broadcast. Including tracks from The Future as well as classics like "First We Take Manhattan", "Bird On A Wire", and "The Sisters Of Mercy", this live set is impeccably recorded and is one of the few available live documents of Mr. Cohen for all of the 1990s and into the late 2000s. A truly beautiful live set from the brilliant, beloved, and dearly missed Leonard Cohen.

Sir Plastic Crimewave - Feathered Serpents

Sir Plastic Crimewave aka Steve Krakow, creator of the long-running underground psychedelic magazine Galactic Zoo Dossier (Drag City) has also played for over 2 decades in heavy/avant psych bands like Plastic Crimewave Sound (Eclipse records, Jagjaguwar, etc) , Moonrises (Captcha Records) and Plastic Crimewave Syndicate (Swordfish Recs), but at last is ready to release his first solo LP! Though Sir PCW wrote all the songs, "solo LP" might be a misnomer, as special guests abound on the Sunstone Record's album "Feathered Serpents." Recorded over the span of over 15 years (!), a folkier, more atmospheric, cosmic vibe prevails, as aforementioned guests like Judy Dyble (Fairport Convention, Giles Giles and Fripp, Trader Horne) lends her ethereal vocals, Kaleidoscope's Peter Daltrey contributes an incantation, Bobbie and Jon Seagroatt of legendary pagan-folkers Comus contribute background vox, hand drums, horns and beyond, members of Acid Mother's Temple throw in strange voices and flute, and wunderkind Ryley Walker adds finger-picked guitar bliss. Heady folk influences like Simon Finn, Mark Fry, Witthauser and Westrupp, St. Syd, and banjo-raga gods like Sandy Bull and George Stavis also invade the experimental song cycle. The album features lush and colourful art by PCW himself (fully painted by Sara Gossett, who also is one of 4 flute players on the LP!) and gently tows the line between acid excess and stripped down chamber folk: sunny yet damaged, but all with a sublime stony sheen.

Sound Of Yell - Light The Currents

Light the Currents is the third release by Glasgow's Sound of Yell, following their 2014 LP Brocken Spectre and 2015 single Fortunate Fume on Chemikal Underground. Composed by Stevie Jones, and performed together with Georgie McGeown, visual artist Vikki Morton (Muscles of Joy, Suckle) and Trembling Bell's Alex Neilson, Light the Currents is a bright and buoyant acoustic arrangement in two parts, the first written for a special performance at an exhibition of artwork by Katy Dove at Dundee Contemporary Arts in October 2016, the second written afterwards as a response to the exhibition and the experience of playing there.

Stevie Jones is one of the great music collaborators of Scotland, involved with a variety of projects incorporating theatre & film, playing as a member of Alasdair Roberts Trio and Arab Strap as well as a wealth of ensembles from Glasgow's genre bending fringes, all to the benefit of his own project. Sound of Yell possess a musical dexterity and lightness of touch that seem distinctly of their home town. These two gorgeous compositions are the perfect summer soundtrack.

A profound, ravishing, spiritual-jazz masterpiece fro mid-seventies South Africa, with some attitudinous funk, delicate Cape swing, and sublime acappella. The opener is a first-round knockout: moody and hurting, soaring and visionary, with him-indoors Dollar Brand threading electric keys through the free-fall, doubled-up, deep-funk drums and bass. Then some delicate Cape Town swing, featuring Basil 'Manenberg' Coetzee on flute; and finally Sathima herself alone at land's end, like a bird.Originally released in 1976 on Rashid Vally's As-shams label, this is a long overdue revive, perfectly realized

Assim Assado

12inchGROO062LP
GROOVIE RECORDS
30.07.2017

The name of the band and the cover of the disc explicitly reveal the influence: Secos&Molhados. Investing in androgenia, progressive rock and samba-soul, Assim Assado tried to be a response of the smallCID label to the enormous success that the Secos&Molhados did to the young public. Led by Miguel de Deus (formerly Os Brazões), who signed most of the compositions and assumed the guitar and vocals, the group never took off, leaving only this LP, now almost forgotten. Curiosity: in 1977 Miguel de Deus falls headlong into funk, casting the rather interesting (and rare) "Black Soul Brothers" Also repressed on Groovie Records.

Band formed by Miguel de Deus in 1974, inspired by the Secos&Molhados and making clear both in the name, which is copied from a song of Secos&Molhados, both on the cover of the band's only album. Also the visual was well androgen but the Music, a mixture of psychedelic, Progressive and a strong touch of Brazilian Soul music. The only album that had the same name as the band, did not get repercussion despite presenting a lot of quality. Now the repress of this rare pearl brings to the light the huge talent of Miguel De Deus.

Bob Dylan's live performances are legendary, from his small Greenwich Village club beginnings, to going electric at Newport, to the incendiary shows across Europe with The Band in 1966. However, in a lifetime of amazing live shows, none are more epic than the Rolling Thunder Revue tour of 1976. Supported by Joan Baez, Jack Elliott, and long-time companion Bob Neuwirth, The Rolling Thunder tour was Dylan at his most unhinged, his most angry, and his most transcendent. Featuring wild, rollicking, powerful arrangements of old classics and recent tunes from Blood On The Tracks and Desire, this 1976 Fort Collins show is capped off by an epic, brutal, Idiot Wind'. Tony Allen & Africa 70 - Jealousy (disco Afro Reedit Vol.3)

We are proud to announce the third release of the Tony Allen & Africa 70 (Disco Afro Series): featuring remastered original versions of Jealousy' and remixes produced by Loya (Reunion Island).

Multi-instrumentalist, initially playing jazz as well as African music, Sébastien Lejeune discovered electronic music when he was living in mainland France. This was the golden age of Warp Records figureheads IDM who had a huge effect on him, in particular the naïve melodies of Plaid and Boards from Canada. During a trip back to his homeland Sébastien became Loya. From that moment on, he started to mix Réunion maloya, Mauritian séga and Indian music with footwork tempo. He blends traditional maloya drums, beatboxes and synths, harmonizing the powerful vocals of Indian Ocean Island singers.

Tony Allen Afrobeat groove inspired me a lot to create the patterns with my drums machines which is the basic of my production work. The Indian Ocean Rhythms formerly coming from Africa recover the true sense on this beats.'

In 1975, Tony Allen recorded his debut album, Jealousy, the first of three made with Afrika 70 and produced by Fela Kuti. Jealousy is according to many still the highlight of his 4 solo-albums, featuring 2 afro-beat gems Jealousy' and Hustler'. Recorded at Decca's 16 track Abule-Oja studio in Lagos, Nigeria. Originally released on Soundworkshop Records in 1975.

The project brings together instruments out of their historical or national contexts and focuses on local sounds that have lost any connection to locality or folk and transforming them through current production techniques.

Negative Chambers feels completely timeless in its quiet minimalism and is made up of an array of instrumentation such as gimbri, violin, karkaba, miniature cymbals, cello, harmonium, steel string acoustic guitar, zithers, transistor radio, tibetan singing bowl, amplified plate & piano frame, partly led by a slow, almost spiritual contrabass. There is some incredibly detailed and wide sound design encompassing the pieces, from the pictural stillness of Orchid Sedation to the unnerving mass of dissonant strings on Ceramic Relic. Glotman & Erlandsson are masters in creating a sound filled with solitude, anxiety and intrigue.

Recorded both independently and in very close correspondence between Stockholm and Berlin, Negative Chambers is a dialog between the two composers and manages to be both a meditative reflection on the past while also presenting a surreal and detailed piece of contemporary music.

John Stammers - Waiting Around

Fittingly titled, Waiting Around is the fruits of melodic craftsman, John Stammers' labour. Arriving no sooner than six years since the release of his 2011 debut, a physically demanding day job and fascination for all things analogue has made way for a record of stark beauty and enduring quality - delayed only by an unyielding sense of intrepid experimentalism.

Recording to tape is my favourite thing to do and I only get to do it two weeks a year because it's so expensive,' John explains. When you're working to tape you have to rely on favours - stealing bits of time here and there which means you're at the mercy of other people's schedules and there could be months between sessions. It's frustrating, I'm not gonna lie, but I'm in love with tape and what it does to the music. It's unpredictable in a good way, adding sounds and crunch harmony.'

Just as tape passes between reels, music-making has ebbed and flowed throughout John's life. Song-writing in Manchester before relocating to London, John, like his grandfather before him, is no stranger to a solid work ethic, Waiting Around's enchanting mysticism was created around six 10-hour days a week of building and painting to fund the excessive cost of analogue studio time. The physical and mechanical side of working with your body is a total escape from anything creative,' John says of the contrast to writing in the comfort of his own home.

My Grandfather was a tough Glaswegian steel worker and played the piano Scottish bandstand style, penny whistle and chromatic harmonica,' John remembers. He could recite scores of Rabbie Burns poems on cue. My first single 'The Fridge' was about seeing him after his wife of 62 years had just died - he went from the stern iron man at the top of the table, to a cowering, inconsolable old man. My songs are usually about someone I know well and their life, an experience I've seen them having or hard myself.'

Sounding like its own reel of ticker tape, Waiting Around is punched with even more magical moments, given its name, it's a wake-up call ( It means you're wasting your life and not being as productive as you or I should be!' John says), whilst beautifully warm songs recall friends as well as past and present loves. 'Stepping Round Her Clothes' captures the feeling of being young and in love whilst fiancée Yasmin plays a starring role in 'Woman.' 'Risky Flowers' is about a troubled young man I knew who smoked heroin, he didn't do it regularly but then I once met him and he looked bad. People said they didn't recognize him. Then I didn't see him for ages - that was three years ago,' John says.

Waiting Around also features the varied skillset of John's many musical friends. Paddy Steer (Home Life, 808 State) lends his expertise by way of homemade percussion, Nancy Elizabeth plays Celtic harp and adds warmth with her vocals, piano melodies are provided by Aidan Smith and Alfie's Ben Dumville plumps up proceedings with rousing trumpet sounds. Produced by Jim Spencer (The Charlatans, Bert Jansch), Miles Copeland (Superimposers), and Dan Munslow (The Monks Kitchen, Luca Nieri), the album was recorded in Eve studio, nestled in Manchester's city suburbs. The idea was to book the studio for two weeks and rehearse in my cellar,' tells John. We got to choose which tape machine to use, synths, compressors - the perfect place to record if you're geared to analogue and like 18th century chapels.'

An introduction to a new mystical world, Waiting Around fuses the great Brit folk-jazz traditions of Nick Drake, Bert Jansch, Davy Graham, with further-flung sounds of Gene Rains, Eden Ahbez, Moondog and Sun Ra. Whilst their influence would not sit so brazenly on John's rolled-up sleeves, each one possesses inspiring techniques, I deliberately listen to how music is recorded and put that into my process,' John explains. A lot of percussion in exotica stuff or Indian, South American folk gives me ideas. Things like a distorted reggae hi hat or a backing vocal that's way too loud and bleeds all over the other musicians - I like natural accidents which you only get with tape.'

Various - Jeff Özdemir & Friends Vol.2

Berlin-based musician and mass collaborator, Jeff Özdemir, is back with a new double vinyl and this time he's gone for gold. With cinematographic soundscapes, thick bass lines, tangible percussion, eerie keys and charming vocals, this synergetic masterpiece treads the boundaries between jazz, Gameboy sounds, chanson, psychedelic desert, soul, minimal, seventies pop, dub, electronic and classical music with a hint of a John Carpenter-esque style to boot.

Rooted in the past but spanning to the future, Jeff Özdemir & Friends vol. 2 refuses to be pigeon-holed into any one decade or genre, transcending these categories without destroying them. Through deep experimentation, Turkish-born multi-instrumentalist Özdemir and his circle of friends have managed to create their own unique sound whilst remaining changeable and varied. Much like the collaborators of the project itself, each song has its own personality drawing from the various corners of the musical universe and joining together to create a new world. The tracks oscillate between Özdemir's solo-work, to dual collaborations, to group projects and include names such as F.S. Blumm, Andrew Pekler, Halloumi Express, Sonja Polligkeit, Benjamin Wild and Dizzy from Rotation.

Drawing from their creators diverse backgrounds the songs incorporate multi-cultural, multi-linguistic elements including French, Japanese, Turkish and Portuguese. Despite its wide scope this double-vinyl - also available as a CD and mp3 download - and its catchy, lingering melodies is both cerebral and accessible. Jeff Özdemir & Friends vol. 2 gives you an insight into Özdemir's world which he centres around his record store, 33rpm Store, in the heart of Berlin Kreuzberg. It is through this hub that he and his friends join together to discuss, listen to and, of course, make music. So have a peek through the window of Jeff Özdemir's mind and enter once again into a universe of sound both familiar and entirely new...

Giallo Disco
12.06.2017

Here with a special collaboration with Glasgow's infamous At War With False Noise, Giallo Disco and AWWFN are unbelievably proud to present, for the first time on vinyl ever, the elusive soundtrack to one of the most notorious, twisted and downright wrongest video nasties of all time: Island Of Death by director Nico Mastorakis. These ultra rare recordings of one Manson-meets-The-Wicker-Man babylonian folk and a 'let's cry a river' ballad were the perfect counterpoint for this sleaze masterwork regarding a sex and murder obsessed couple causing havoc on a Greek island. Do not sleep on this. You'd be a fool... in a lye pit.

Lynn Castle - Rose Colored Corner

Though most of the world may not know the songs of Lynn Castle, she is an artist whose work stretches across seven decades. She has created a diverse and vast (albeit mostly unreleased) discography of pop, folk, country, gothic, rock, punk, blues, and children's songs.
.
Light In The Attic Records continues its Lee Hazlewood Archive Series with Rose Colored Corner, a collection of intimate recordings Lynn Castle made with Jack Nitzsche in 1966 and her complete recorded output with Lee Hazlewood on LHI Records. For the first time ever Lynn is sharing recordings from her personal archive and telling her story.

In the 1960s Lynn became the first lady barber in LA just as long hair on men became hip. By day she was styling The Monkees, Boyce and Hart, Del Shannon, Sonny & Cher, the Byrds and countless others...by night she was writing songs. Despite lacking the desire to self promote and a crippling insecurity that made it hard to sing in front of anyone, her songs managed to bend the ears of such industry heavyweights as Phil Spector, Jack Nitzsche and Lee Hazlewood. It was so hard to get me to sing,' explained Castle. I had buried it so low, I didn't think I was good at all. Lee heard my songs and thought I was fabulous. He said, 'Oh my god, you're really good! Let's cut a record.'

Her sole 1967 45 The Lady Barber" b/w "Rose Colored Corner,' released on Lee Hazlewood Industries is a slice of psychedelic pop heaven. A full length album was never completed, but her sparse demos with Jack Nitzsche give the listener a peek of what one might have sounded like. If you are familiar with Nitzsche's mid-60s work with Tim Buckley, Bob Lind, and Buffalo Springfield...you can squint your ears and imagine her songs bejeweled with lush strings, finger cymbals, and delicate harpsichord. Instead, the songs remained unheard until now.

Just because her songs weren't recognized at the time doesn't diminish their magic. This music is meant to be found and heard. Though commercial success may remain elusive, sometimes strange premonitions are realized... When I was young, making music in the '60s, I had this strange thought that one day I would be this old woman, and young people would come find me and tell me that my music meant something to them.' - Lynn Castle

O GENESIS

Tim Burgess' curated imprint O Genesis Recordings present VELD, a new solo album of luminous pop incantations, electroacoustic music and shimmering drones from composer and multi-instrumentalist Daniel O'Sullivan. Whether solo or in his varied collaborative projects, O'Sullivan's work is remarkable in the way it infuses familiar everyday experience with traces of the uncanny, the secret and the magickal. VELD distils these tangled realities into a wonderfully rich and complex record — one of O'Sullivan's most immediate and moving pop albums to date, yet one that's strikingly dense and allusive, alive with enticing sonic diversions, hypnotic mantras and eerie biomechanical rhythms.
