  • Long Way To Fall
  • Home Late

Limited to 500 hand-numbered copies on cherry red vinyl, this is a magnificent return for The Popguns and another smash hit for Matinee. A very welcome return for legendary British band The Popguns! Hailing from Brighton, England, the band's debut single 'Landslide' was released in 1989 on the hip indie label Medium Cool Records and voted into John Peel's Festive 50 by listeners of the BBC Radio 1 show. A rush of brilliant singles and albums over the next six years assured the band its place in indie history before they went on extended break. Sometime in 2012, the four original members reformed along with a new drummer and backing singer for a series of gigs and this year has seen them play to packed venues in London, Paris, Berlin, and New York, as well as the prestigious Indietracks Festival. To commemorate this new activity, the band recently recorded their first new songs in 18 years for this exclusive 7" single. Lead track 'Lovejunky' is an immediate pop hit with incomparable soaring vocals from Wendy Pickles, driving guitars, an insanely catchy chorus, and superb harmonies. An absolutely glorious comeback, the song is a preview of a new Popguns album 'Pop Fiction' scheduled for release later this year. The single also features two exclusive b-sides that will not appear on the new album. 'Long Way To Fall' is another power pop hit that could have been a single on its own. It has more of those signature Popguns vocals plus multiple loud guitars, fantastic melodies, and a fierce drumbeat. Final track 'Home Late' showcases an altogether more melancholy side of the band, with carefully strummed acoustic guitars and chiming female harmonies among its many charms.

VEYU

NEW EP- All That We Know/ In the Forest/ Running/ The Everlasting

Released 3/11/14 on Digital and Vinyl On Baltic Records

"Like Wild Beasts, Liverpool's VEYU imbue neo-gothic northern rock with bookish sensuality." Q

"There's something indistinct and transportative about "Running" that reminds us of The War On Drugs at their rambling best..., "Running" seems to gallop along like Mr Granduciel's epics; it sounds like the perfect cassette to have stashed with you if you decided to hitch a ride across America. It poses more questions than it answers",-Not Many Experts Blog

For some, this will be their idea of heaven up there; others can hear the Smiths in its sombre acoustica, but it's way less arch than that. As for the guitar, can we describe it as "shimmervescent" We can Thank you. Paul Lester The Guardian

A career spanning 16 years old, an incoming fifth album entitled V. A pause lasted six years which sees them get back on track in better shape than ever, as always uncompromising, outspoken.
They returned the Marsh Mallows, band history of the Italian rock scene that comes back mature, precise and pissed off enough! V is a careful analysis of our times made by a band that in his career, developing a unique sound straddles rock, punk and metal, has written songs which have become part of the legacy of the scene "hard" Italian. 13 songs in Italian, as powerful as a slap well placed and ready to explode in a flurry of biting riffs at the right point, to which we add the two covers in the English Civil War and Alien, praise respectively Pennywise and Motorhead.

Minny Pops - Drastic Measures, Drastic Movement

Factory Benelux presents a new deluxe 2xCD edition of Drastic Measures, Drastic Movement, the first studio album by Dutch electronic group Minny Pops, originally released in September 1979.
Formed in Amsterdam in 1978 by vocalist Wally Van Middendorp, Minny Pops took their name from the primitive Korg drum machine which propelled their austere, post-punk rhythms and provocative live performances. An early association with Factory Records in Manchester saw the band work with producer Martin Hannett, share stages with Joy Division and New Order, and become the first Dutch band to record a BBC radio session for John Peel.
Drastic Measures, Drastic Movement is their first album, originally issued on Dutch label Plurex in September 1979. An uncompromising genre classic, the 13 track album mixes hard-edged electronica with modernist noise, and shares much in common with contemporaries Cabaret Voltaire, Suicide, The Normal and early Human League. As well as an early version of Factory single Dolphins Spurt, DMDM features junk food satire MD Mania and a cover of R.U.21 by American punk band Novak.
The 9 bonus tracks on disc 1 include all 3 cuts from the debut Minny Pops EP Kojak, and a 2003 remix of Dolphins Spurt. In addition there are 12 minutes of vintage audio-visual clips of 5 songs performed at the Amsterdam Filmacademie in 1979, playable on your PC in QuickTime format.
This new remastered edition of Drastic Measures, Drastic Movement on Factory Benelux also adds a bonus disc with an entire live performance of the album (12 tracks), recorded at Dansmakers, Amsterdam on 11 March 2012 during their 30th anniversary tour, with Wally Van Middendorp joined by Pieter Mulder, Dennis Duchhart, Thomas Myrmel, Bart de Vrees, Jeroen Kimman and Wilbert Bulsink

To Destroy A City

Sunless LP 2x12"

2x12inchMD233LP

30.08.2024

Sophomore albums can be a tough proposition, often created in a much shorter time span than the years of refinement most debut albums receive.

Chicago based trio To Destroy A City dropped such a perfected debut in 2011 that fans have collectively held their breath for a follow-up. However, unlike
some artists who rush into the studio to complete their sophomore release, TDAC has taken nearly three years to craft their follow-up: SUNLESS.

The time and effort shows in the nine cinematically crafted tracks. At
times SUNLESS is more electronic leaning than its predecessor, yet is still punctuated with sheets of glacially emotive guitar-work. Intricate electronic beats give way to propulsive live drumming. The synths, while more prominent this time out, fit effortlessly into the TDAC framework.

SUNLESS is an album of contrasting moods, though the trio transi-
tions between these moods more gently than their peers.

Only 100 copies of vinyl available

A must-have for fans of God is an Astronaut, Hammock, and Lights Out Asia. SUNLESS will be available on CD as well 2XLP.

A Certain Ratio - Sextet

Factory Benelux presents deluxe double vinyl and CD editions of Sextet, the ethereal yet rhythmic second album by Manchester postpunk funk group A Certain Ratio, originally released by Factory Records in January 1982.
Self-produced at Revolution Studio, Sextet saw the original Ratio quintet of Donald Johnson, Jeremy Kerr, Martin Moscrop, Simon Topping and Peter Terrell joined by co-vocalist Martha 'Tili' Tilson. Written and recorded following a transformative sojourn in New York in late 1980, the album reflects Latin, samba and even jazz influences (eg Skipscada, Day One), while still retaining Ratio's signature brittle funk textures, heard in full effect on Lucinda, Gum and trancelike floor filler Knife Slits Water.
'It all came together for us on Sextet really,' confirms bassist (and latterly vocalist) Jez Kerr. 'We were all working together - more involved in the recording, and what went down onto tape. It's definitely got something that the other albums haven't.'
Newly remastered, the bonus tracks on both the CD and vinyl formats include non-album single Waterline as well as dub plate Abracadubra (released as Sir Horatio), and the band's three song John Peel session from June 1981.
The double CD version also includes a further Peel session from November 1982, featuring two songs never before released on record: Piu Lento, and Who's To Say. Also included on the CD are both extended 12' mixes of Knife Slits Water, together with an early demo version of percussive marathon Si Firmir O Grido.

Bj Nilsen, Stillupsteypa & Anla Courtis - Golden Circle Afternoon

Recorded and mixed in Berlin, Reykjavík, Buenos Aires 2013
Artwork by Helgi Thorsson, Bj Nilsen & Sigtryggur Berg Sigmarsson
Layout by Jeroen Wille
"here back in Buenos Aires after more than three months touring...so nice to slow down and relax a bit."
Those were the first words coming from an email from Anla after
another long tour around Europe but there had been many other tours.Day 10. After a long train delay in Mannheim we were confused and exhausted and not remembering where the next destination would be.
Mannheim had only offered a hard floor as bed and no sheets, and this is in the middle of winter time. Of course this experience gave us the idea that we should or more precisely MOST do a record together which concept would be: Travelling. Like an audio travel guide. Plus we are all big fans of the Travelling Wilburys. We thought this idea to be one of the best one on this tour so far. In the train we were listening to Future Days by CAN.
Day 4. Moving backwards a bit here. We caught Anla working on
recordings in his hotel room. This was in Stockholm and one of the better paid gigs, with hotel rooms for all of us.
Anla was interested in the sound coming from the heater in the bathroom. So he started recording it´s sound using a dictaphone. It sounded really interesting and was made into a long fade at the nights gig in Stockholm.
That same sound you can hear on the record.
Day 6: Copenhagen: Here traditional town flavors, located bookstores can be found all around. Beer capital town some might say. Weather was not on our side and the trip took close to 12 hours but was all worth it.
I think it was Siggi saying something along the lines of: "Expensive but worth it!"
Helgi also remembering that time in the late 90s when touring with
Reynols. Back then we did gigs with small card paper boxes as main sound source.
Day 8: The Keukenhof Gardens, Leiden, Holland. We decided to invite some local musicians to the bar, as we had a few days off we took advantage of doing a few outtakes. Some of it appears on this record but we can't tell you where as the track listing got mixed-up by the recording engineers.

Maurizio Bianchi - Teknoise

2

Maurizio Bianchi has been at the forefront of the Industrial 'scene' for four decades and has no inclination to stop producing music of unique experimentation. A prolific artist that has encompassed several genres, namely Industrial, Noise, Dark Ambient and the Avant-Garde. Bianchi was inspired by the music of Tangerine Dream, Conrad Schnitzler and Throbbing Gristle. He originally wrote about music for Italian publications, before beginning to release his own cassettes under the name of Sacher-Pelz in August 1979. He subsequently released four cassettes under the Sacher-Pelz banner (which have now been re-issued by the Italian label 'Urashima') before switching to his own name or simply "MB" in 1980. Maurizio released a further 14 albums on cassette and LP, before leaving music behind in 1983 to follow a more 'refined' existence. Having been persuaded to return to music, Maurizio once again starting recording in 1998. He still contends to pushing the boundaries of 'difficult' music to this day.

Coming soon to Peripheral Records and now available for pre-order, Maurizio Bianchi's unreleased 2-track album entitled, 'Teknoise'. Originally recorded in August 1980 this album has never been released in any format and is an extremely rare artifact from Maurizio's collection. Two long tracks, 'Tek' and 'Noise', deliver that unique sound that M.B. has made his own. Primitive drum machines pulse over sinister analogue synths, that create an unsettling atmosphere, perhaps only the true Italian master of Industrial and Musique Concrete could ever create. Limited to 300 copies in standard jewelcase, with artwork by Nullvoid.

Anti-flag - A New Kind Of Army

A New Kind of Army is a punk rock album originally released by Anti-Flag on May 25, 1999. It was reissued by A-F Records on October 19, 2004. A New Kind of Army is easily one of Anti-Flag's most varied albums, from the childish fun of "Captain Anarchy" to the ska-like vibe of "That's Youth" to the slowed-down protest song "The Consumer's Song" to the satiric "This Is Not a Crass Song". It is also the only album to feature only Justin Sane as lead vocalist. All other albums featured at least one song sung by either Andy Flag or Chris #2.

Pauline Murray - Pauline Murray And The Invisible Girls

PAULINE MURRAY , LEGENDARY VOCALIST OF MUCH LOVED PUNK BAND PENETRATION.
GUEST MUSICIANS JOHN MAHER (BUZZCOCKS) and VINI REILLY (DURUTTI COLUMN).
PRODUCED BY THE GOD-LIKE MARTIN HANNETT.
ARTWORK BY PETER SAVILLE AND TREVOR KEY
LINER NOTES BY JON SAVAGE
The double vinyl edition also includes a bonus CD featuring instrumental versions of all the album tracks (a must for students of Hannett's unique production sound), along with alternate takes of key singles.
Les Disques du Crepuscule presents a deluxe remastered edition of Pauline Murray and the Invisible Girls, the debut album by post/punk icon Pauline Murray, produced by revered sonic architect Martin 'Zero' Hannett.
Recorded at the famous Strawberry Studios in July 1980, the album offered epic electronic pop written by Pauline and partner Robert Blamire and marked a radical departure from their shared past in pioneering punk band Penetration. 'This is sophistication,' enthused Paul Morley in NME. 'Lovely songs of anxiety, malaise and self-doubt.' According to Melody Maker the album was 'unquestionably a musical highpoint of this year or any other.'
As well producer/arrangers Martin Hannett and Steve Hopkins (aka the Invisible Girls), the album features a stellar cast of guest musicians including John Maher (Buzzcocks) and Vini Reilly (Durutti Column). Indeed Pauline Murray and the Invisible Girls presents almost a Factory record, exquisitely sleeved by Peter Saville and Trevor Key. Stand-out tracks include the popular singles Dream Sequence and Mr X, with the newly remastered Hannett tracks now augmented on CD by a wealth of bonus material including non-album singles, live recordings (from tours in 1980 and 1981) and a John Peel session (1980). The liner note is by Jon Savage.
'It's a bit of a missing link album,' says Pauline today. 'Written and recorded after punk, but before Martin Rushent and the Human League made airy pop respectable again. We chose the other Martin in 1980 because we wanted the incredible sounds he achieved for Joy Division and Magazine. Thundertunes, basically.'

Spacemen 3 - Live At The New Morning, Geneva, 1989

First Spacemen 3 release in 10 years since 'Live in Europe 1989' - LP Vinyl Only - with silver cardboard sleeve, 500 copies - Liner note by Sonic Boom - 29:12 version of Suicide - Recorded from the mixing desk - Picture sleeve from the actual gig - 500 copies printed on shiny silver cardboard We all know and love Spacemen 3. We've been exchanging this recording since 30 years. We thought this was about time to release it properly. ... so instead of dealing with the impossible task of finding the words to describe how amazing this record is, let's just hear what Sonic Boom has to say about the release: I seem to remember this show more distinctly than most, and always did. Spacemen 3 was a band not overly loved in their day. It was tough, or at least uneasy. Musically people thought we were some sort of twisted joke. Which in some ways we were. You needed to be bloody-minded to make this music at that time. The set presented here, is as it was .... except the show was twice this length. We tuned and smoked for almost as long as we played. And then our disenfranchise moment, installed to filter the wheatfrom the chaff in our audiences - the sprawling SUICIDE wheeled out here in a long mischievous version. We slipped away mid song amongst much fog and dry ice. With taped down keys and feeding back guitars propped against our speaker cabs keeping the song pulsating and screaming. Disappearing back down to the already too familiar dressing room. We rolled large smokes and cracked fresh drinks. And finally after an extended 'break' re-appeared on stage. Not to wind down as normal at that juncture, but to re-fire up the piece for a further onslaught. Extending the maelstrom as bloody mindedly as we could.

Grmln - Soon Away

Soon Away

12inchCAK98LP
Carpark Records
29.09.2014

With Soon Away, GRMLN veers from the pop-punk-rooted road the band traversed with last year's Empire; it's an aggressive album, darker and heavier than what's come before. While it carries these characteristics, there is also a certain peace to Soon Away, thanks to songwriter Yoodoo Park's personal growth.

The teachings of Krishna were an inspiration to Park while writing the record and it's a force that helped define his perspective in these songs. The singer-guitarist sees the constant changes of life allowing people to embrace the true nature of living. Still, there's intensity to these guitar-driven tracks. On the opener of the album 'Jaded' Park sings, 'Go, but you're breaking without me / When days can crawl around / To waste myself away,' which is built around one of GRMLN's catchiest riffs to date.

The album grapples with letting go and getting used to good-byes. 'Find a way to be wanted and here for someone else / Break away from the notion, the poison in my head,' Park sings on the cathartic 'Faux.'

After writing the songs in Japan and whilst on tour in the U.S., Park went back to Different Fur Studios in San Francisco with engineers Patrick Brown and Sean Paulson, who worked on GRMLN's previous album Empire. On Soon Away, Park is joined by his brother, Tae San, who assisted with bass parts and arrangements; with the addition of long-time drummer Keith Frerichs providing a rhythmic backbone.

GRMLN is the musical project of 21 year old, Yoodoo Park. He was born in Kyoto, Japan and moved to southern California at a young age (though he still goes back to Japan every summer). Yoodoo started playing music at the age of 13 when he was given a bass guitar and released his debut album Empire in 2013, preceded by the debut EP Explore.

Vazz & La Bambola Del Dr Caligari - Whisper Not / The Wrong Holiday (feat. Vazz & La Bambola Del Dr Caligari)

A-side features six tracks from Glasgow's Vazz, a duo consisting of Anna Howson & Hugh Small. "Whisper Not" was recorded at the legendary Hellfire Club in Glasgow in 1982 and was eventually released on limited edition cassette, before the band were signed up to appear on the 2xLP compilation "Antelopes & Alligators" on Operation Twilight - a sublabel of Belgium's infamous Les Disques Du Crepuscules. All tracks on "Whisper Not" are also available on CD format as part of the Vazz anthology compilation ((FN010CD).

B-side features Italy's La Bambola Del Dr Caligari and 5 tracks recorded between 1983 and 1986. The band were a short-lived minimal synth trio from Bologna, Italy, consisting of Judy Asquith (voice), Aurelium Spitty (sound engineer, synth, drum machines, effects) and J.R. Ewing (keyboards, effects). They recorded their first demo tape in early 1984 and sporadically played live in 1985/86, eventually arranging the soundtrack for an installation at the art gallery Number Zero (Bologna) in Feb 1986. Several self-produced tapes were recorded over the years but were never properly released.

DESIRE RECORDS
02.07.2014

A G E N D E R started out as a solo, lo-fi punk excursion for Romy Hoffman (Macromantics, Romy), and has since morphed into an all girl 3 piece, known for their intense, fast, tight knit punk shows. A G E N D E R play a unique blend of schitzo synthy paranoid punk.

The first record 'Self (en)titled' was entirely written, recorded, played and mixed by Romy Hoffman, with additional mixing and mastering by Mikey Young (Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Total Control). A G E N D E R's sophomore album 'FIXATIONS' was recorded onto 2'' tape, at Head Gap studio's in Melbourne, Australia, by Casey Rice (Liz Phair, Red Red Meat, The Dirty Three). It was co-produced by Rice and Hoffman. The songs on this record are fixations on, and fetishes with femininity, and explore the desperate/ disparate nature of queerness, sexuality and obsessive, dysmorphic desire.
SIDE A of the record, is a synth heavy post punk affair, while SIDE B is a raw onslaught of classic punk brashness. Some of the songs on this side were recorded in one take. 'FIXATIONS' is a spillage of sexual secrets and the purging of perversions.

Live Skull - Pusherman

DESIRE RECORDS
06.06.2014

Recorded in 1986, The Pusherman EP is the final studio record released by the original Live Skull quartet of Mark C, Tom Paine, Marnie Greenholz and James Lo. Along with Sonic Youth and Swans, Live Skull was the face of New York's post-No Wave "noise scene" during the 1980s, and the songs on The Pusherman EP are in many ways the culmination of that movement and the essence of what Live Skull was all about.
Relentlessly fierce but with an unnerving ability to insinuate themselves in your brain, the songs on The Pusherman EP further refine Live Skull's pioneering strategy of threading unlikely hooks through mystifying interference patterns that subvert traditional rock in previously unheard ways. The EP would deserve its classic status if only for its free-associating version of Pusherman (a very curious hit on college radio back in '86), a thoroughly abstracted but weirdly faithful cover that re-imagines Curtis Mayfield's original through the cracked and filthy lens of Live Skull's crumbling East Village.
Less than a year after this record's release, Live Skull would find itself in transition, eventually becoming a quintet with drummer Rich Hutchins and Thalia Zedek on vocals - but The Pusherman EP stands in the minds of many fans and critics as not just the original line-up's final testament, but possibly its finest. In his much-quoted review for The New York Times, Robert Palmer declared, "With each new record, New York's Live Skull delivers a more concentrated brand of emotional intensity, a more ferociously disciplined sonic assault. Live Skull's music - a high-wire act played for keeps, without a net - is as challenging, as spiritually corrosive, and ultimately as transcendent as Albert Ayler's mid-60's free jazz or the implacable drone-dance of the early Velvet Underground. It's one of the essential sounds of our time."
Out of print for nearly thirty years, Live Skull's Pusherman EP has now been reissued on limited edition vinyl and (for the first time ever) on CD, complete with a lavish booklet including extensive liner notes by founding members Tom Paine and Mark C, and six extremely rare bonus tracks. This is the fourth release in Desire Records' Live Skull project, an ambitious eight-title series of reissues of the entire Live Skull catalogue, personally overseen by Mark C and Tom Paine.
12": limited edition of 300 copies - clear yellow vinyl - 24 pages booklet with rare and unseen pics and extensive liner notes by band members Tom Paine & MarK C. Download coupon including the 6 CD bonus tracks.

Kubo - This Desolation

Peripheral Minimal is proud to announce the new 7" by Irish duo KuBO, who consist of: Aidan Casserly (also of synth act Empire State Human), and Brian O'Malley (also of Polydroid).

This will be the first vinyl release by the band, after the initial tape single I Dream Electric, onManchester based label Vocoder Tapes. KuBO pay homage to Cubo-Futurism, the early 20th Century Russian art movement which concerned itself with contemporary concepts of the future and the technological triumph of humanity over nature.

KuBO's futuristic synth stylings perfectly fit their nom de guerre. For lazy comparisons think of 80s synth protagonists, O.M.D and Depeche Mode or even Associates, owing to Aidan's beautifully soaring soulful vocals. But KuBO are more than that, they create wonderfully melancholic Minimal Synth, that's highly emotive, able to fill dance floors and act as cerebral fodder simultaneously. A full length album will follow this release in the not too distant future. Plug in and tune out, you won't be disappointed.

Limited to 200 copies.

Eureka California - Crunch

Eureka California

Crunch

CDHHBTM161
20.10.2014

Crunch marks the 2nd Eureka California album in 18 months, eleven more songs you can't stop humming. They can't get arrested in NYC--well they can, but they're going to need someone to help post bail because they spent all their tour money on Dolly Parton cassettes back at the travel plaza. In an age where everything's overplanned and under thought, underwhelming and overwrought, EC's spontaneity feels like a breath of fresh air. They walk the fine line between not giving a fuck and not giving a shit and come down on the right side every time. Crunch moves with an easy, breezy confidence. Just when you think they're only tossing off, they turn around and toss off a powerpop classic like 'This Ain't No A-Side,' that can stand proudly alongside early Jam or Plimsouls. On an album of two-minute bursts, 'Art Is Hard' is a 4-minute epic with lyrics stolen from other songs. 'I know one day someone will say the same things I have said / One day someone will say the same things you have said,' in the sound of someone banging their head against the wall, seriously fighting the need to be taken seriously. It ricochets between hilarity and pointlessness until culminating in the true brilliance of: "because it's never the being that you dream of only the becoming you want If this wasn't your life would you care what you got" It's a game that Eureka California play like experts, and it's the ace up their sleeve. You think we're kidding, and we are--until we're not. Like a baseball pitcher who knows how to change speeds, EC works the corners of the plate, leaving the listener dizzy and off-balance, entertained but needing to go back and listen again. Did he say what I think he just said Torn between rocking out and giving up, their live show blurs the line between comedy and tragedy in a way that borders on performance art, a band who appreciates the dumb jokes as much as the funny ones, and yet on a good night they're one of the best bands you could ever hope to hear. When Jake Ward sings, 'Money money is everywhere but there's not a cent to spend so what do I care if I don't get my share' you believe every rushed note and every defeated shrug in his voice. In the tradition of bands like Mudhoney or The Replacements, they take nothing seriously, least of all themselves except when they do. But thankfully, they possess one of the best drummers on the planet in Marie A. Uhler , who gives the songs a force and energy that gets the hooks across. Come for the show, stay for the songs. Eureka California will sabotage their dreams to hold onto their freedom. And in an age where everyone's got one eye on the blogs and the other on their bank account, they're exactly the kind of band we need right now.

Attrition - Demonstro: 1982 - 1985

CD with 8-page booklet, limited to 300 copies. A definitive collection of 20 of the rarest ATTRITION songs...; With previously unreleased tracks, demos and alternate versions. So many experiments with analogue synths, drum machines, tape loop, bass guitar and effects... Many of these tracks were released on cassette compilations at the time ...; and 2 of them on our very first vinyl release... a 2 track flexi disc with Adventures in reality fanzine in 82... But there were a lot of tracks that never did get released back then... some were demos, some just never found a home at the time... For the last 30 years i have been carrying boxes of those cassettes around with me as i travelled around the UK, and Holland briefly... I've spent a lot of time selecting the best and cleaning them up in my studio from the old cassette mixes, and in some cases from the original 4 track tapes... It's time to put these to bed.... i hope you enjoy this little slice of our life.... Martin Bowes, Coventry, England, 2014

Review:

Another twenty tracks of primordial goodness from Coventry's Attrition. Martin Bowes gives up some his most remarkable darlings with the release of this new collection from the band's earliest days. A word of warning, dear listeners, these are the rough outtakes and alternate takes which never saw the light of day and which Bowes lugged around all these many years in boxes on slowly decaying cassettes. I suspect this is being released for the fans like myself who knew that 'Something Stirs' was just the appetizer because unlike that release this one is sprawling. It's like being locked in a tiny, constricted room with no windows or ventilation listening to this.

The desperate intensity which these pieces give off burns like a fluorescent bulb stripped of it's insulation. Naked, savage and crudely abrasive, this era of Attrition was certainly the most unpredictable. You never know where these compositions are going to wind up, most are extremely minimal. A couple synth lines, some jarring percussion and over the top Martin bellows while Julia rasps and wails. The pacing is manic, the production definitely shoe-string, which only expands the raw power this album displays with glee. Every time I go back and immerse myself in this sort of work from them I come away with the feeling of having just been pummeled by an avalanche of sharply hewn boulders.

If free-formed electronic experimentation is your forte, you'd be wise to check this out. Their later refinements are not to be found here, these are the private moments of a group who during this time were well praised for 'The Attrition of Reason' but out of the media glare and that infamous 'Elephant Table' compilation did some remarkably inhuman sounding songs. Don't worry, there's a demo version of "Monkey in a Bin" to give an indication that they could play nice when the situation required it. There's also another take on "Mind Drop" which gives the officially released version over to the dogs to rip apart. You spooky types are not going to be very enamored with what is on here, 'Etude' this is definitely not.

Whenever there's need to torpedo yet another youngster's view of how safe and slick the 1980s were, I know I can always pull out what this bunch did in those days to underline the point. No clever hooks, no catchy choruses. This is the bare bones skeleton of Attrition, the cement and steel foundation to a band who continue even now to confront and confound. I'm so pleased to get more of this, it's like a breath of fresh air given what the state of the underground has mainly become. The dynamics they achieve with so little equipment is remarkable, I can't imagine many of these dervishes could have been done in any kind of proper studio setting.

Renegade sound tacticians roaming the countryside composing whenever and wherever they could. I only wish I'd have been able to see them live during these days, the audience reaction must have been one of complete repulsion (remember, the punk era was still going on during these years). Did they get it as bad as Suicide A lot of what's on here has that same kind of anarchic core to it which Rev and Vega pioneered in the early 70s. Attrition took it in a different direction, however, adding a few more layers of effects and contrasting vocal styles.

There's some serious exploration going on here with 'Demonstro', if he's hiding any more of this I cannot wait to hear it. I'm more than familiar with what he does musically but this one threw me for a loop, I had no idea Attrition got this far outside the established norms of song structure. Somehow, I know I'm not alone in this. Step through the curtain and hold on for dear life.

Hidden Place - Retrospettiva: 2004 - 2014

Peripheral Minimal is proud to announce the latest release by HIDDEN PLACE 'Retrospettiva: 2004 - 2014' the best of. Containing 3 tracks from each album and a bonus unreleased remix. CD limited to 200 copies. Italian act Hidden Place create a perfect mix of Minimal Synth and Coldwave, ranging in influence from early Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark / Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode to Clan of Xymox and mid-80s 4AD stylings.

Review:

'British label Peripheral Minimal is in the process of releasing a retrospective compilation of tracks, with the Italian electro/new-wave group Hidden Place. Having released four albums in total, from 2005-2012, this retrospective album will feature three songs from each of their albums, plus an unreleased remix. As they gradually moved on from their most experimental first album "Weather Station", they put out a new album each two years that passed, in the end making it three years - with their latest album up to date; "Novecento". Being on labels like Hellektroempire, to Twilight Records, Calembour Records and now finally, with Peripheral Minimal, very soon. Approaching a colder picturesque landscape of sound with their overlaying electro, as the more pop-induced new-wave sound made the melodies all the more danceable. A fresh new sound had been developed through the years, as the vocals of Sara Lux, a member of the group - became more and more distant from the sound itself. Making it a rather accomplished combination between vocals and the sounds of Fabio V., Antonio L. and Giampiero Di B.'

Bird - My Fear And Me

Bird

My Fear And Me

12inchBALTIC007LP
>UK / England
23.06.2014

"We love BIRD and are very much looking forward to seeing them play the BBC 6 Music Festival's main stage this year." Lauren Laverne

"I'm a big fan of BIRD and Adele Emmas' ethereal, haunting vocals" Tom Robinson

"BIRD are creating music that's hauntingly beautiful and forcefully captivating." Guardian

BIRD is the creation of Adele Emmas, Sian Williams, Alexis Samata and Christian Sandford. Hailing from Liverpool, they create dark, haunting yet enrapturing music which will entice you into their otherworldly universe.

With a dynamic mixture of power and fragility, BIRD combine hypnotic, tribal drum beats, atmospheric guitars and dreamlike synth-scapes to create the foundation for Adele's beautiful, siren-esque vocals and lyrical poetry.

After releasing two EPs (one of which was produced by composer and ex-The Coral guitarist, Bill Ryder-Jones) and continually touring the UK, BIRD have gained a large loyal following and garnered praise from all corners, including BBC Radio 1, 2, 3, 6music and have even been invited to play sessions for Simon Raymonde (The Cocteau Twins/Bella Union). The Guardian, Metro, NYLON, NME, Q Track of the Day, TLOBF and Channel 4 are just some who have featured the band. They recently played at the BBC6Music Festival, and at the end of March they will be on tour in Europe supporting Rodriguez

They have also shared the stage with the likes of Wild Beasts, Soley, King Charles, PINS, Poltergeist (Echo and The Bunnymen) and Stealing Sheep which cemented BIRD's reputation as a formidable live presence. In 2013 they performed at Festival Number 6, The Great Escape and Liverpool Sound City.

Now with new Liverpool label, Baltic Records, launched in 2013 under ADA, BIRD have been working with producer Darren Jones to create their debut album entitled, My Fear and Me to be released 2nd June 2014.

Retaining the atmosphere and dark heart of their early EPs, and combining this with melodic hooks, stark lyrical imagery and intensely-layered soundscapes, the band utilise instruments such as harp and theremin to add to their unique sound.

The Tea Street Band - The Tea Street Band

The Tea Street Band release self-titled debut album on June 23 on Baltic

Timo Tierney (vocals/guitar); Lee Smith (guitar); Nick Otageui (bass); Dom Allen (drums); James Albertina (keyboards)

"I love The Tea Street Band. When I first heard Disco Lights, I thought 'Fucking hell!' It blew me away; they're right on it." Michael Head

"Think of 808 State having a meeting mid-channel with Space Disco You to hear some French electronica. You need to hear The Tea Street Band soon." Dave Monks, BBC Introducing

"Glacial guitar-led house. Really quite beautiful." High Voltage

Track Of The Week - Huw Stephens, Radio 1; Track Of The Week - Tom Robinson, 6 Music; Janice Loves Track - Janice Long, Radio 2; One Night Stand/Shock Of The New/Guess Who Track/My New Favourite Band Track - John Kennedy/Jo Good/Lliana Bird/Clint Boon, XFM

You could call The Tea Street Band the most popular band the media has yet to recognise. They've headlined the 900-capacity Liverpool Evac, as well as Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen. Support shows include The Charlatans, Jagwar Ma, The Enemy and Inspiral Carpets.

The five-piece's album is funded by Pledge Music. Many higher profile artists have failed to reach Pledge targets, but The Tea Street Band achieved over 100% of their recording budget within a fortnight. Self-sufficient funding means it's a freeing, uninhibited world away from label demands.

They're the favourite new band of Shack icon Michael Head. Amongst airplay from Radio 1 to 6 Music has been a One Night Stand session for John Kennedy on XFM. Before games, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Everton have played their singles, Disco Lights and Lost For Words. Even Lennox Lewis is a fan.

So there already exists a wealth of devotees won over by dizzying gigs. Plugging into the escapist spirit of early house music, propulsive rhythm section Nick Otageui and Dom Allen bear comparison to Mani and Reni, with Lee Smith's vicious guitar lines preventing matters getting too sweet. It's underpinned by Timo Tierney's angelic vocals, encapsulating the band's yearning desire for better days ahead.

The shows' euphoria is captured on their self-titled debut album, recorded at Liverpool studio Motor Museum with rising producer Al Groves (Jake Bugg, Courteeners). From the hypnotic pulse of Fiesta to Summer Dreaming's wistful beauty, it's a compelling listen that demands to be heard as one long ecstatic groove.

The Tea Street Band began by organising their own warehouse rave gigs around the North West, having formed from the ashes of acclaimed rockers The Maybes (All the band bar dazzling keyboardist James Albertina were members.) From there, shows at Kendal Calling and Liverpool Sound City have helped build the momentum for the band's dream of

Various - This Dismal World

This Dismal World" is a dark concept album about the 'Four Nobel Truths' - the central teachings of Buddhism explaining the nature of suffering (dukkha). Legendary cult industrial act Dissecting Table from Japan and Germany's dark ambient/industrial project Anemone Tube join forces to perambulate the stony path of the four noble truths: suffering, its causes, the possibility of its cessation and how it can be overcome.

With the use of field recordings exclusively made in a mausoleum in China in 2007, Anemone Tube gains insight into the first truth of suffering, the impermanency of all forms of life and the inevitableness of death. "In The Mausoleum" is a dark industrial epic conjuring up a sinister, threatening atmosphere. With the crushing power-electronics track "From Anthropocentrism To Demonocentrism", based on field recordings made in buddhist temples in Nanjing and Shanghai, Anemone Tube consequentially confronts the listener with the origin of man's craving for sense-pleasures and self-perpetuating egocentrism.

Dissecting Table's monumental industrial track "1000 Tones" is dedicated to the 1000-armed Guanyin - being known as the goddess of compassion to save beings from suffering and ignorance. Almost like a self-mortification Dissecting Table is reciting the complete 25th Lotus Sutra about The Universal Gate of Bodhisattva Kanzeon ("the perceiver of the world's lamentations"). Accompanying with ritual drumming, diverse analogue treatments and deep growls, Dissecting Table creates a threnody for today's dejected world."

12" LP, black vinyl, high quality varnished full color 300g cover sleeve Regular edition: 200 copies with A4 insert (210 x 297 mm) Die-hard edition: 88 hand numbered copies with A4 insert (210 x 297 mm), A2 poster (592 x 420 mm) and 2 woven patches, one of each project. Artwork by: Anemone Tube

Review:

'This Dismal World' is a split recording from the German Anemone Tube and the Japanese Dissecting Table which is conceptually inspired by Buddhist related themes. To quote from the promo blurb it is: "a dark concept album about the 'Four Nobel Truths': suffering, it's origin, cessation and the path leading away from suffering". This concept is also expanded upon with a printed insert which includes the lengthy written piece: 'The Lotus Sutra Chapter Twenty Five: The Universal Gate of Bodhisattiva Kanzeon' (which specifically ties in with Dissecting Table's contribution). Additionally the cover depicts Guanyin Bodhisattva aka the 'Goddess of Compassion' in the form of a 21-metre high bronze statue located in Longxing Monastery, Shijiazhuang.

Anemone Tube lead off and based on the sheer quality of their recent output (specifically referring to the 'Death Over China' album), it is great to see the new material is as equally stunningly here. Effectively Anemone Tube's style of taking various field recording elements and welding them into abstract industrial/ dark ambient soundscapes is fully on display here (the field recordings utilised here were evidently made in a Mausoleum and other locations in China). Of the two presented Anemone Tube tracks they are slightly on the noisier side - and great for it. 'In The Mausoleum' is digitally crisp, bass heavy and sweepingly evocative in its cyclic tone and perhaps reminiscent of earlier Inade. Alternately the second track 'From Anthropocentrism To Demonocentrism' aligns more towards a power electronics structure, its sharp tonal squall and looped sampled elements is clearly recognisable as that of Anemone Tube.

Dissecting Table's contribution '1000 tones' is presented on the second side of the vinyl which forms a singular monolithic 20 minute composition. Here the loose and chaotic track infuses stoic ritual percussion, clanging metallic elements, an abundance of noisy outbursts, chanting Buddhist monks (...;presumably reciting the written tract from the Lotus Sutra), screamed quasi extreme metal vocals etc. Here these disparate elements are loosely melded together to generate a heady dose of chaotic industrial madness - Dissecting Table style of course. Although I may not be a massive Dissecting Table fan, objectively I can say the track is a heavy hitter and based on the above description you should know if it is suited to your listening preferences.

As a whole 'This Dismal World' delivers solid material from both projects, but from my perspective Anemone Tube's tracks hit the high mark of the two.

Russell Haswell & Pain Jerk - Electroacoustic Sludge Dither Transformation Smear Grind Decomposition No!se File Exchange Mega Edit
  • 1: Russell Haswell's Mega Edit
  • 2: Pain Jerk's Mega Edit

'Electroacoustic Sludge Dither Transformation Smear Grind Decomposition nO!se File Exchange Mega Edit' is the long awaited collaboration from two of the world finest purveyors of noise, electroacoustics and top shelf audio mayhem. Having met at the legendary Tokyo venue 20000 volts in 1997 Haswell and Pain Jerk (Kohei Gomi) stayed in touch with the intent to collaborate at some point in the future. This was eventually realized in 2012 when they were offered a gig to play together at the Rammel Club in Nottingham. Prior to the show they exchanged files of solo recordings, as a means of forming a basis for what was initially conceived as an 'extreme duet tag mass attack'. It was here that the foundation was laid for the epic extreme end result we now encounter. The Nottingham performance was recorded and both parties took away the results in addition to their solo recordings to re-edit and re-send, back and forth, for 2 years, re-editing, re-contextualising these original sounds.

The results of this extended collaboration is a punk academic collision which utilises advanced computer music techniques and analogue/digital modular synthesizer splurge, along with the more basic and belligerent frequencies found in distortion and feedback. This can also be read as a study of editing in all forms; hyper editing, editing in pop music, editing in dance culture, electro-acoustic editing, the editing techniques used in musique concrète, editing used in film and advertising along with the notion of gaps - the audible and inaudible.

A blistering 2cd collision of transformation, technique, ideas and form which resides equally in the advanced fields of electroacoustic study and the high energy freeform noise from which both practitioners sprung.

Acteurs - I W I

Public Information
02.06.2014

A year on from their Public Information debut, Chicago duo Jeremy Lemos and Brian Case return to the fold with five new pieces of exquisitely produced wave-funk-techno-noise-electronics.

It takes great skill to pull off a three-minute electronic drone-grumble to kickstart your new record. Lemos and Case have it in droves. The tension is jet-black, loaded with friction. Modular energy pulses in and out, in and out. Then suddenly Case takes to the microphone, snarls and spits "Hey Bullfighter, read about you in a book..."

I W I finds Acteurs in a more assured, confident, angry mood than their debut. The signifiers are there - claustrophobic Ike Yard glare, Factory Floor throb, Diagonal abstractions - but we now have a bold swagger, stomping triumphantly into frightening new space. The crushing late-song collapse of "Honey Bear" is a breathtaking wall of clatter and noise that Tim Hecker would blush at. The loopy saw-tooth menace of "River Card" is as strange as anything they've done and the pummeling title track could easily shatter those murky dancefloors of strip-lit basements where people from the future dance in amongst the normals; machine drums puncturing the smoke, ear damaging feedback rattles the walls, torn Moog shapes cutting chatter to zero...end of night.

We have a feeling that this is merely a stepping-stone to an incredible future direction for Acteurs, but what a platform. We will be there all the way.

Muuy Biien - D.y.i. (do Yourself In)

Last year's This Is What Your Mind Imagines featured a bunch of teenage boys about to go off. Like early Husker Du, it bypassed conventional notions of melody and headed straight for pure anger. Nevertheless, every paper in Athens put Muuy Biien on the cover. For DYI they're going to need to build them a goddamn statue. Only a year on from their debut, Muuy Biien have undergone an evolution nearly as startling as the primordial fish that grew lungs and crawled onto land. It's a band that is about to make the lazy comparisons of the past—to Savages, to Iceage, to Joy Division, to The Fall—seem ridiculous. It may be all anger & brutality on the surface, but there's a pop sensibility at its heart, a buoyancy that TIWYMI lacked. That album was a pure laser beam of black & white rage, but DYI finds the band slowing down every so slightly and allowing things into the songs—melody, vulnerability, dynamics, hooks—that up till now you had to look closely to find. Muuy Biien is the real thing. No college degrees, no connections, no future. Kids in their 20's raised in the Georgia countryside, born to work in fast food—the band members met while all working at fried chicken chain Raisin' Cane's, eventually moving in together like some kind of white trash Monkees. But art springs forth from the unlikeliest of places (though you'd think everyone would know by now that being rich in Brooklyn doesn't give you access to anything besides access. Or excess. Yet for all their antics—getting kicked out of local awards shows, self-mutilations both verbal and physical—the members of Muuy Biien are first and foremost artists. The power of DYI is palpable and real, but so is the sense of craft that hangs over it. Like the latest Laurel Halo, the album closes with a fractured piano instrumental. They might go anywhere from here. 'She Bursts' is the song that leaves all their peers in the dust. A coiled, unbearably tense depiction of womanhood that keeps ratcheting up the intensity before concluding in a glorious explosion of stars and white light. Muuy Biien is that rarest of punk bands—someone who's pissed off at all the right people, including themselves. Frontman Josh Evan's rage may be scattershot, it may be convulsing in all directions, but in his songs you hear the struggle of someone trying to get it right, reminding themselves to try and hate the powerful first. DYI is the sound of a band learning to rage correctly. Mankind may be a virus, but who do you want to see die first. Between albums, two band members released cassettes of their ambient projects, and sure enough even the most aggressive songs on DYI have all kinds of textures and beauty drifiting below the surface. In Evans, the band has a singer of a once-in-a-generation intensity. He doesn't just sing, 'Another white ego / another good gone bad / to overcompensate for what you lack.' He spits every consonant with contempt. The way he sings 'Be a man / Do yourself in' on the album's title track makes the lines sound like a wish—if the object is going to 'be a man' (that tired macho demand of our fathers) then he might as well kill himself. Because to be a man by those standards would make life not worth living. Too melodic, too artistic, to truly be punk. Too engaged with the outside world to be indie. Too good to be true. DYI is the sound of a band exploding with ideas. Stay tuned for the next evolution.

Tape Waves, made up of Kim Hart and Jarod Weldin, play dreamy indie rock, that melts through the speakers. Delicate vocals blanket jangly guitar lines that bounce back and forth from this Charleston, SC duo, that captures the happiness of a deep day-dreaming session on the beach.

This is their second single, which places them on a line in which Mazzy Star or Beach House intersect with bands like Wild Nothing, Beach Fossils or Best Coast.
