Right from their inception in 1976, back in the first stirrings of punk, Wire went about making music in a subversive, conceptual way, setting themselves apart from both their peers and their influences.

'I had this idea that I wanted to avoid things that had a particular kind of tradition,' explains singer and guitarist Colin Newman. 'I thought the three-chord trick was too simplistic and that the one-chord trick would be better. Or the two chord trick where the second chord is definitely not the right chord.'

Bass guitarist and vocalist Graham Lewis identifies another trait that has run throughout the group's lifetime. ' People said, we were mysterious, arch and dark. But the only way of doing that successfully, is by also having a sense of humour. You have to have that balance. With Wire there's a peculiarity, a contrariness and that can be funny." This questing approach has served them well in guarding against repetition and cliché. In context, Wire's last album, 2013's aptly titled Change Becomes Us was another case of 'Expect the unexpected' as it found them extensively reworking a rich cache of material abandoned amid a temporary

break-up in the early 80s.



Their 13th studio album - simply titled Wire - comprises material that was written with the album in mind, but toured extensively first, as well as songs that Newman introduced to the group in the studio just prior to recording. The idea was to get the most spontaneous reaction possible from the musicians, and far from the rough and ready results one might expect from such a tack, Wire is full of swooning pop melodies with a 60s tinge and an irresistible, near motorik rhythmic momentum. One can recognise certain melodic inflections, guitar and bass motifs, and drum rhythms from Wire's idiosyncratic vocabulary but it has a remarkable freshness. The basic tracks were recorded at Rockfield Studios with overdubs added at Brighton Electric. The 11 tracks selected for release were the ones that came together most naturally.



From the outset Wire was an alliance between four very different characters and continues today with the addition, in 2012, of It Hugs Back guitarist Matthew Simms, who is around thirty years younger than the other group members. 'With Matt there was a really new dynamic that had appeared in the group's sound and that was something we wanted to capture, utilise and be creative with,' says Lewis.

Wire is the first album where Simms has been involved in formulating the material from the ground up, but when the group's particular chemistry starts working he is now very much part of the process.

Lewis provides most of the lyrics for the album, their subject matter encompassing love songs, cryptic narratives and coded messages. One time, Newman asked Lewis to send over some unfinished, unformatted text so he wouldn't be bound by what to use for the chorus. This material spawned two songs written on the same day, 'Split Your Ends' and the droll 'In Manchester'. The latter has the disorientating and rather absurd situation of having 'In Manchester' as a soaring chorus, when the song is not about Manchester beyond a single line in the lyric.

As the album progresses, some of the sunlit pop tunes become more shadowy and it ultimately plunges into the musical black hole of 'Harpooned', eight churning minutes of the group's darkest, most abrasive music to date, and a favourite in live performances since 2013.



'The point where our personal narratives meet is all about change - moving on and keeping it interesting for ourselves,' says Newman. 'We're in it for the long haul and this is a one-way trip.'

'Divide And Exit' sees Sleaford Mods once again released on the elusive Nottingham-based low-profile Harbinger Sound label. Once dismissed around their native Nottingham as "two skip rats with a laptop" the last 12 months has seen the Sleaford Mods simply knock all their distractors clear out of the way. The mounting hysteria surrounding their 2013 album " Austerity Dogs" has spread like chlamydia at a teenage house party and saw them topping many 'End of Year' lists worldwide.  Along with a handful of limited 7" releases on labels as diverse as Matador and X-Mist, plus an extensive european touring programme have all helped to solidify their growing reputation as the 'ones to watch '. The Sleaford Mods duo of Jason Williamson and Andrew Fearn have also been busy throughout the year working on the follow up album which finally sees a release at the start of May. "Divide and Exit " contains 14 new tracks all written over the last 12 months and the result is as immediately in your face as its vicious predecessor.  Whilst Fearn's beats and loops will pull you up into the urgency of Sleaford Mods they also allow you to run the gauntlet from delibrate clumsy dance-floor swaggers to full-on punk throwabouts with them. Williamson is let free to spit out his unempathic litany of bile and anger towards the bloated and tedious. His verbal salvos and side-swipes are often savage and brutal , yet at turns, hilarious, but always spot on as Sleaford Mods rage and despair as the country sinks deeper into a cesspool of its own idiocy. It's an album that doesn't have the privilege of luxury, indulgence or extravaganza and it will strike a resonant chord with many because it simply refuses to compromise. Many critics have attempted to tag and align the Sleaford Mods with other artists and have done little other than to advertise their own shortcomings and lack of knowledge. If you need a pointer try and imagine an East Midlands take on Suicide that survived rave culture and looked to the Wu-Tang Clan for the escape hatch. The down to earth observations and story-telling of Ian Dury or Patrik Fitzgerald are maybe closer than any other names flung about in desperation. If you wish to tag and place Sleaford Mods you're only limiting yourself. CD version to follow.

In the early 1980s, YDI (pronounced: Why-die) put Philadelphia on the map with their ferocious brand of Hardcore.

In 1983 they unleashed their debut 7' EP A Place In The Sun' a blistering nine-track blast of american-hardcore fury. Circa-1985 the band changed musical directions and created filthy, metallic, damaged punk.

The Black Dust' (a concoction of PCP, heroin and formaldehyde) 12'-LP was YDIs' final recording and a criminally underrated slab of disgusting mayhem.

This double vinyl document contains every known recording of the band.
Also inside is a 10'x10' full color photo book with tons of never before seen images from the era.

On paper, Ye Nuns are a tribute band. An all-girl celebration of The Monks, proto-krautrock garage punkers formed by a gang of American GIs stationed in Germany who legendarily sported tonsures and nooses on stage. But Ye Nuns are more than a tribute band.
Formed by seven London ladies in 2006, Ye Nuns send witchy, six-part harmonies crashing over scratchy guitars, layer on evil fuzz bass and add pounding drums. Lead vocals screech and soar. Electric banjo hacks relentlessly. Vintage keyboard sounds stab. Yet it's still music that puts grins on faces and gets feet moving.

In an arena where youth is often prized above talent, a band of seven women north of 35 is virtually unprecedented. Their experience and assured poise shines through on stage. There's no need for faux-sexy posing or cute apologetic stylings. Members' other bands include Curve, Mambo Taxi, Thee Headcoatees, Gay Dad, The A-Lines, Echobelly, Joanne Joanne, The Werewandas and The Priscillas .
Debut album Nun More Black grinds, grooves and assaults. Recorded in two days flat on old-fashioned tape at Gizzard Studios, there are proper tunes, moments of astonishing avant-garde sonic assault and lashings of righteous ire which you can dance to. Again, Ye Nuns are more than a tribute band.

Formed in 1980, POISON IDEA became a household name in the hardcore/punk scenes early in their career, and are known as one of the most notoriously in-your-face acts in the American musical underworld, with an enraged, high-energy live set even more rambunctious than the massive roster of singles, EPs, full-length studio and live releases and more, across a realm of labels including Pusmort, Tim/Kerr, Epitaph, Farewell, TKO, Southern Lord, and their own Fatal Erection. They've been an incredibly influential act to major performers including Nirvana, Pantera, Napalm Death, Machine Head, Eyehategod, Emperor, Turbonegro and an endless list of others.

It is with massive enthusiasm that Southern Lord Recordings announces the brand NEW Poison Idea studio LP: Confuse & Conquer featuring eleven raging new anthems. Recorded by Joel Grind (Toxic Holocaust) and mastered by Brad Boatright (From Ashes Rise), the record booms with thirty-five minutes of fully ignited hardcore punk in the monolithic style the band has provided for three-and-a-half decades now.

Though Confuse & Conquer is the first new POISON IDEA album to be released since the passing of iconic guitarist Tom 'Pig Champion' Roberts in early 2006, the loved, infectious sound delivered on the band's seminal albums including 1990's Feel The Darkness and 1992's Blank Blackout Vacant blazes through the entire album. POISON IDEA currently includes Eric 'The Vegetable' Olsen, back on lead guitar. He was the first real lead guitarist in the band and the second player after Pig Champion, and he played on the 1987's War All the Time LP and 1988-released Filthkick EP. The band also welcomes the return of Chris 'Spider' Carey on bass, who played on Latest Will And Testament, the last recording before Pig passed. The lineup is rounded out with Brandon Bentley also joining on guitar, Nathan 'Skinny' Richardson on drums, and as always, founding vocalist Jerry A. Lang handles the hot-blooded vocal delivery.

'What can I say We're all happy with the record,' reports Jerry A., on the completion of Confuse & Conquer. 'It's a group effort; we all had a part in writing the songs. We've been screwing around for too long. We had to hang back and see whose heart was really in this thing we've been doing for thirty years and who was bullshitting. We have a lot of touring to do next year, to make up for the last one being cancelled due to people with the wrong priorities. Everybody in the band now lives to play and make music; that comes first. It always has, it just took a long time to filter out the flakes, and keep the diehards. So these guys know how to make this ship float. As far as I'm concerned, it feels like being reborn, having a second wind, a hardcore revival, and just discovering meaning, all at the same time. To put it mildly, we're happy, I'm happy, and this is just the start. No stopping from here out.'

Dominic Waxing Lyrical - Woodland Casual

Dominic Waxing Lyrical is Dominic Harris and friends, an Edinburgh band consisting of singer/songwriter Dominic Harris and a rotation of backing musicians. 

Dominic released one (very excellent) album (eponymous, though sometimes thought to be called 'Simplicity' on Neptunes in 1996 - last seen on discogs for £50 and rising) and a series of singles in the 90's. The album was at the time described as 'd.i.y-baroque-folk' by Melody Maker and, in our favourite description, like 'a punk Jake Thackray'' (Sounds). 

Dominic was also well known in the Edinburgh locality for memorable live performances involving, on occasion,  blood, nudity, police raids and shoddy transvestisism amongst other antics. Fans of Dominics at this time included John Peel and Jonathan Richman (who asked Dominic to support him on tour in 1994). 

Now, after  a mere 18 years, Tenement Records is pleased to announce the release of 'Woodland Casual', Dominic's second album. With a backing band consisting of Edinburgh musicians (and long term Dominic fans) Riley Briggs (Aberfeldy), his brother, Edinburgh drum stalwart Murray Briggs (Oi Polloi, Aberfeldy) George McFall (Clean George IV) and Neil Bateman (Badgewearer), the sound is more band-oriented than the more acoustic sounding first album. 

Featuring songs about care-in-the-community discos ('Wednesday'), transgressive custodians ('Janitor'), existential custodians ('Nightwatchman') and Thursday ('searching') - a song detailing Dominic's weekly Psycotherapy sessions.

23 Skidoo - Beyond Time (12" + Dvd)

Beyond Time is the first album by acclaimed experimental group 23 Skidoo in fifteen years, released in a special double disc edition combining the soundtrack music to 2011 documentary film Beyond Time, and a DVD of the film itself.
Directed by Alex Turnbull and Pete Stern, Beyond Time is a journey into the life and work of artist William Turnbull, from his modest roots as the son of a Dundee shipyard engineer to his standing as one of the world's most highly regarded modern sculptors. Narration is by Jude Law. 'An insightful, irreverent documentary, yet with a palpable sense of purpose' said the Daily Telegraph, with the Guardian confirming that'William Turnbull helped change the way we see art today.'
The soundtrack music is performed by 23 Skidoo. Formed in 1979 as industrial, post-punk and funk genres coalesced, the group included Bill Turnbull's sons Alex and Jonny together with Fritz Catlin and Peter 'Sketch' Martin. As well as new music, the accomplished score features re-worked versions of older material. 'Johnny and I thought 23 Skidoo's anti-commercial tendencies came from a punk sensibility,' explains Alex. 'But it turns out we had a genetic predisposition to anti-establishment practices. Bill was a polymath at a time when that was a dirty word, shifting between sculpture and painting and putting both in a symbiotic relationship. Now crossing boundaries is everywhere: think of hip-hop. The name of the band referenced a William Burroughs short story. Burroughs used, as we did, cut-up techniques, collaging and sampling. We were oblivious to the fact that a lot of that aesthetic was in what Bill did until I made the film.'
Both the CD and vinyl versions of Beyond Time include a Region 0 NTSC format DVD of the documentary film (with bonus features), but feature different artwork. The CD/DVD package features a portrait of Bill by photographer Ida Carr, while the vinyl/DVD version features a detail from 05 by William Turnbull (oil on canvas, 1959) printed on matt reverse board.

The Popguns - Pop Fiction

Highly anticipated and absolutely superb new album from legendary English band The Popguns! Purveyors of heartfelt, uncomplicated pop music, carried by melodies and vocals that go straight to the heart, the group's debut single 'Landslide' in 1989 was voted into John Peel's Festive 50 and a rush of brilliant singles and albums over the next six years assured the band a well-deserved place in pop history. Recently the four original members reformed along with a new drummer and backing singer and this year has seen them play to enthusiastic audiences in London, Paris, Berlin, New York, and the prestigious Indietracks Festival. The first Popguns album since 1996, 'Pop Fiction' is a truly magnificent return. Epic album opener 'City Lights' begins with a chiming guitar intro that builds into dreamy vocals telling a tale of misplaced affections and the alluring lights of the big, bad city, accompanied by some especially dazzling melodies. Meanwhile, 'If You Ever Change Your Mind' is a classic three-minute power pop tune with a wicked hook and a little twist in the tail. The song was inspired in part by an episode of the Danish political drama 'Borgen' and is a stunning showcase for the incomparable vocals of Wendy Pickles. The album continues with the immediate pop hit 'Lovejunky' which was released earlier this year as a limited red vinyl 7" single. It's a glorious song with soaring vocals, driving guitars, an insanely catchy chorus, and marvelous harmonies. Next, a long acoustic intro for 'Still Waiting For The Winter' showcases dual female vocals before the rest of the 'Guns arrive for a reflective journey through a vignette of Popgun nights out on the Brighton seafront. The song references the band's second single and live favorite 'Waiting For The Winter' from 1989, giving long-time fans even more to smile about. 'Alfa Romeo' is a single contender inspired by the fascinating story of American trumpeter Chet Baker, and the mood of the song perfectly fits the romantic image of the unimaginably cool Baker in his Alfa Romeo on the boulevards of San Francisco, Paris and Rome. Side two of the album opens with the slow burner 'Out of Sight' with its tom-tom intro providing the base for some ethereal feedback guitar and gorgeous layered vocals. It's an altogether different side to The Popguns as they sink into the divine sound of a long distance love affair quietly beating on a rainy Wednesday night. This segues into the sparse backing track of 'Not Your Night Tonight', which lets Wendy's voice be heard in its full beauty with lyrical shades of Lou Reed and Bob Dylan and some beautifully twinkling keyboards. 'Leaning on the Backline' is a proper up-tempo indie guitar track and a nostalgic look back to the late 80s and the people and places around the band at that time, while 'Something Going On' sits perfectly beside any track from that time period as a classic Popguns song with Wendy's vocal delivery leaving no doubt that this is still someone not to be messed with! Finally, 'I'll See You Later' is a celebratory sign off to the album with The Popguns getting as close to rock as they probably ever will with some solid guitar riffs. Utterly accomplished and bursting with confidence, 'Pop Fiction' is that great pop record The Popguns always promised when they formed 25 years ago and an absolutely spectacular return for the band. Pop perfection indeed!

One of the most seminal Japanese punk bands ever, Stalin formed in 1980 and blew away all previous attempts at Japanese punk thanks to their frontman Michiro Endo's crazy on-stage perfomances and their unique style. Even though by the release of their first LP "Trash" in 1981 Stalin moved towards a more 'hardcore/punk' direction, which resulted in what's known to be their best work - the classic 'Stop Jap' LP from 1982, Stalin's early singles are one of the best examples of what would be 15 years later defined as 'killed by death' punk rock. Originally released in 1987, the 'Stalinism' LP collected their first flexi 7", the 'Stalinism' EP, the 'Fish Inn' flexi single, along with 'Chicken Farm' their contribution to the legendary international hardcore compilation 'Welcome to 1984', to whom Stalin owe a good portion of their cult status. A great reissue for all Japanese punk fans out there.

Martin Hannett & Steve Hopkins - The Invisible Girls

Factory Benelux presents The Invisible Girls, a collection of rare and unreleased recordings by legendary new wave production duo Martin Hannett and Steve Hopkins (aka The Invisible Girls), most of them never before heard.
Martin 'Zero' Hannett is the legendary Manchester producer famous for his work with Joy Division, Buzzcocks, New Order, Magazine and Happy Mondays. Steve Hopkins was his musical partner in The Invisible Girls, the floating studio collective that shaped epochal records by John Cooper Clarke, Pauline Murray, Nico and several others.
The first five tracks on the album are a selection of previously unreleased 'Moods' recorded at the famous Strawberry Studios between 1980 and 1987. 'These were the beginnings of Martin's Invisible Girls world domination plan,' Hopkins explains. 'The idea was to assemble a roster of key instrumental players, produce tracks to be fronted by different singers/stars - and get some hits!'
Other tracks include rare solo tracks by Hannett, collaborations with Section 25, Pauline Murray, Nico and Crispy Ambulance, as well as the complete soundtrack to All Sorts of Heroes, a short animated film from 1976 scored by Hannett and Hopkins.
The 74 minute album features detailed liner notes by Steve Hopkins and others, as well as archive TIG and Strawberry images.

Bay Area Retrograde (BART) Volume 2 is Dark Entries' second compilation of underground music from San Francisco (and the greater Bay Area) made between 1978-1983. Towards the end of the 70s, San Francisco's experimental music scene clashed with the aftermath of punk and gave birth to a vibrant underground. By the early to mid 80s the DIY music scene of the Bay Area was a hotbed for experimental and quirky new wave, post punk, and synthpop, quite similar to New York's No Wave scene and Berlin's Neue Deutsche Welle. This compilation connects the (transit) lines between these varied musical offerings and tells the secret story of eleven forgotten Bay Area bands. BART Volume 2 features slow, dystopian horror from pioneering industrial group Factrix; crushing, motorik noise from acid punks Chrome; amphetamine-driven synth punk from Red Asphalt; an early demo, never released on vinyl, from legendary post punk band Tuxedoomon; chilling atmospheric drone from Ki Di Me; leftfield new wave from Indoor Life featuring Patrick Cowley on synths; Los Microwaves more sinister side project Baby Buddha; gay drag icon Timmy Spence delivering an unknown camp classic, a pure instrumental electro-pop workout from Human Being Men; TR-808 fueled synth pop from Menlo Park duo Wonders of Science, and a poetic yet somber and haunting song from the mysterious Zru Vogue. All tracks have been carefully remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Each LP is housed in a large 6-panel, 2-sided fold out poster designed by Eloise Leigh, featuring original photos and fliers from each band's personal archive plus a 36"x24" print of a photograph by Ruby Ray from1978. BART is the acronym for Bay Area Rapid Transit, the main rail transportation system for the San Francisco Bay Area. This LP is by no means a definitive compilation but merely opens the tunnel to the underground of the Bay!

Their second full-length offering for Blackest Ever Black, following 2013's Deformed Worship, Privacy is a defence of the anti-social, the secretive, and the inward-looking; a call to resist the contemporary obsession with "connection", exhibitionism and peer approval, and to claw back ownership of the self. It's only then that the real battles begin. Raspberry Bulbs is the invention of visual artist and musician Marco del Rio, who, under the guise of He Who Crushes Teeth, co-founded Bone Awl - one of the most distinguished black metal projects ever to come out of the USA. Bone Awl has been on indefinite hiatus since 2011, the same year that Raspberry Bulbs' debut album, Nature Tries Again, emerged (following three demo cassettes of dour, hermetic riffage issued in 2009-10). Hitherto a solo endeavour, RB expanded to a five-piece in the wake of Nature's release, and sought to make a definitive break from black metal's musical signifiers, if not its underlying themes of alienation and abjection - a path of self-discovery that culminated in the bruised, dynamic visions of their sophomore LP, Deformed Worship (BLACKEST018). Privacy (BLACKEST034) arrives barely a year after its predecessor, but it's a markedly more developed and far-reaching album. Songs of excoriating intensity once again form the basis of the work - the no-frills 4-track recording capturing all the violence and nuance of del Rio's vocals, of the dual guitar rapport, and the machine-gun rhythm section - but this time they're interspersed with eerie electronic miniatures, instrumental pieces that suggest unseen worlds, malign energies, forces beyond our comprehension and control. This aura of the uncanny is no accident. Though it's practically impossible to describe Raspberry Bulbs' music without mentioning punk or metal, the band's most important influences are not musical, but literary: in particular the "weird fiction" of Lovecraft, Machen, Chambers et al. Privacy certainly has far more to do with this esoteric lineage than it does with contemporary punk or metal cultures. Indeed, the spirit of "weird fiction" runs not just through this album but through all del Rio's prior projects, and even his root influences - explicit Lovecraftian references abound in everything from The Fall to Rudimentary Peni to Morbid Angel, after all. Privacy, then, is perhaps best understood as an entry into this cross-discipline canon of the "Weird" - a genre concerned with transformation, sacrifice, forbidden knowledge and fate. In rejecting the outside world and turning inwards to face "the boundless and hideous unknown", Raspberry Bulbs have delivered their defining statement.

Nazoranai comprises three gentleman, three friends and three fans of each others creative output. 'the most painful time happens only once has it arrived already..' is the second release from Nazoranai, a power proposition made up of three sound/song heavyweights: Haino Keiji, Oren Ambarchi and Stephen O'Malley (no introductions necessary, intimidation checked in at the door).

Recorded by Chris Fullard at CCSO, Birmingham 9th July 2013 'the most painful time...' expands the trio's devastating explorations of improvised rock based shapes. The opening track 'you should look closely those shattered spells never attaining embodiment as prayer they are born here again you should look closely those shattered spells never attaining embodiment as prayer they are born here again' hurtles the listener straight in the abyss with an epic 18 + minutes off apocalyptic free rock. This is music on the threshold, a searing landscape where soaring guitars circle amongst a pounding minimal tribal rhythm. 'will not follow your hoax called history' lurches out at the listener offering a hand as a guide for this invented netherworld. The multi limbed 'who is making the time rot' documents our hosts in absolute freeform mode, wildly rummaging the remains of exploded structure. Finally the title track swings the pendulum back to earth in the guise of structure, base, rhythm and song.

Hovering between annihilation and brutality 'the most painful time happens only once has it arrived already..' is a sonic sinkhole where the unrestrained improvised peaks are indelibly stamped with the unique traits deployed by these three titians of rock and experimentation.

Mit Bands wie At The Drive-In und The Mars Volta haben sie sich in den Annalen der Popgeschichte gespielt.
Anfang 2014 gegründet, haben sich Antemasque sofort daran gemacht, neue Stücke zu schreiben und aufzunehmen. Neben Omar und Cedric ist auf dem Album RHCP-Legende Flea am Bass zu hören, Mars-Volta-Drummer Dave Elitch sitzt an den Drums. Omar's Bruder Marfred Rodriguez Lopez stieg kürzlich als fester Bassist für die Liveshows in die Band ein.
Am 09. April gab es das erste Lebenszeichen der Band in Form der atemberaubenden Debüt-Single '4am'. Drei weitere tauchten in den Folgewochen im Netz auf, schließlich am 01. Juli für kurze Zeit das komplette Debütalbum. Im Novemeber erscheint das selbstbetitelte Debüt nun ganz offiziell. Wenngleich die Messlatte durch ihre früheren Bands in schwindelerregender Höhe liegt, darf man sich auch bei Antemasque sicher sein, dass es auf ihrem ersten Album an hyperaktivem Soundgewitter keinen Mangel geben wird.

Next year, Light In The Attic will release a detailed series showcasing the work of impassioned poet, painter, actor, and prolific, self-taught musician Lizzy Mercier Descloux. Instrumental in the late 70s New York underground yet of Parisian origin, Mercier Descloux, with partner Michel Esteban, established the magazine Rock News and ran in the same circles as Patti Smith and Richard Hell. Lizzy became a genre defying artist and pioneer of worldbeat and avant garde rock, and supreme minimalist of the no wave genre in her own right. A glimpse of what's in store for this upcoming archival series, this 7" presents two key tracks from the Mercier Descloux catalog: the epitomic, 1979 disco-punk classic "Fire" backed with a rare session featuring Lizzy and "Godmother of Punk" Patti Smith reciting a bilingual version of Arthur Rimbaud's poem, "Matinée d'ivresse/Morning High," set to music by experimental contemporary Bill Laswell.

In 1978, legendary label ZE Records released a mini-album by Mercier Descloux's performance art duo, Rosa Yemen, and went on to release several of Lizzy's solo albums. Her debut solo album, Press Color, consists of eight songs owing more to disco, funk, and film scores than punk rock, all recorded within a two week span. Lizzy's second solo release, Mambo Nassau, evokes Talking Heads' "Zimbra" and "Born Under Punches," riddled with off-kilter-time-keeping, flailing guitars, and lush basslines. Heavily influenced by African music, art rock, funk, and soul, Mercier Descloux's music gained extreme popularity in her native France, the height of which came with her 1984 album, Zulu Rock. The album seems a more vivacious and enthralling harbinger for Paul Simon's Graceland. ZE Records' Michel Esteban recalls, "This South African music reminded us, as incredible as it may sound, of The Velvet Underground."

Lizzy spent the next two decades living somewhat nomadically in Africa, France, New York, South America, and the West Indies, never ceasing her pursuit of the arts as she transitioned from music to painting and writing. Mercier Descloux was diagnosed with cancer in 2003 and passed away the following year. This year marks the ten-year anniversary of Lizzy Mercier Descloux's death; the five albums in store for 2015 (CD/LP/Digital) will be newly remastered with bonus tracks, expanded artwork, photos, and new liner notes.

Vocalist IAN 'MOET'MOSS is one of the few people who can actually claim he was at the infamous Sex Pistols gig at the Free Trade Hall Moet has been at the epicentre of the underground and punk scene in Manchester for over thirty years. he spent time in the Hamsters, Moet formed Kill Pretty in 2010 after the break-up of his previous band Sicknurse whilst Mike Leigh was the drummer with The Fall in 1979/80 playing on the classic Fall recordings like Dragnet, Totales Turns, Fiery Jack and Rowche Rumble.

A Certain Ratio - Sextet

Factory Benelux presents deluxe double vinyl and CD editions of Sextet, the ethereal yet rhythmic second album by Manchester postpunk funk group A Certain Ratio, originally released by Factory Records in January 1982.
Self-produced at Revolution Studio, Sextet saw the original Ratio quintet of Donald Johnson, Jeremy Kerr, Martin Moscrop, Simon Topping and Peter Terrell joined by co-vocalist Martha 'Tili' Tilson. Written and recorded following a transformative sojourn in New York in late 1980, the album reflects Latin, samba and even jazz influences (eg Skipscada; Day One), while still retaining Ratio's signature brittle funk textures, heard in full effect on Lucinda, Gum and trancelike floor filler Knife Slits Water.
'It all came together for us on Sextet really,' confirms bassist (and latterly vocalist) Jez Kerr. 'We were all working together - more involved in the recording, and what went down onto tape. It's definitely got something that the other albums haven't.'
Newly remastered, the bonus tracks on both the CD and vinyl formats include non-album single Waterline as well as dub plate Abracadubra (released as Sir Horatio), and the band's three song John Peel session from June 1981.
The double CD version also includes a further Peel session from November 1982, featuring two songs never before released on record: Piu Lento, and Who's To Say. Also included on the CD are both extended 12' mixes of Knife Slits Water, together with an early demo version of percussive marathon Si Firmir O Grido.

Art Of Burning Water refuse to die despite being one of the most frowned upon bunch of noise making twats of the past 10 years.

There is no machine behind this band and the UK 'underground' rock circle jerk has never approved them or championed them and they do not have friends in high places but DO have high friends. You won't be told to check them out and they will not be seen high fiving the correct people in the correct places in order to further their way up festival bills with the correct bands.

Art Of Burning Water are outsiders in the truest sense of the word AND VERY PROUD TO STAND OUTSIDE THE GOLDEN CIRCLE OF YOUR LOVE.

Art Of Burning Water are a steroided immigrant noise punk outfit that does not need to be loved to live.

Art Of Burning Water love what they do and therefore need not be loved for what they do. This is strong music by weak people.

Nazoranai - The Most Painful Time Happens Only Once Has It Arrived Already..

Nazoranai comprises three gentleman, three friends and three fans of each others creative output. 'the most painful time happens only once has it arrived already..' is the second release from Nazoranai, a power proposition made up of three sound/song heavyweights: Haino Keiji, Oren Ambarchi and Stephen O'Malley (no introductions necessary, intimidation checked in at the door).

Recorded by Chris Fullard at CCSO, Birmingham 9th July 2013 'the most painful time...' expands the trio's devastating explorations of improvised rock based shapes. The opening track 'you should look closely those shattered spells never attaining embodiment as prayer they are born here again you should look closely those shattered spells never attaining embodiment as prayer they are born here again' hurtles the listener straight in the abyss with an epic 18 + minutes off apocalyptic free rock. This is music on the threshold, a searing landscape where soaring guitars circle amongst a pounding minimal tribal rhythm. 'will not follow your hoax called history' lurches out at the listener offering a hand as a guide for this invented netherworld. The multi limbed 'who is making the time rot' documents our hosts in absolute freeform mode, wildly rummaging the remains of exploded structure. Finally the title track swings the pendulum back to earth in the guise of structure, base, rhythm and song.

Odd Rumblings - Odd Rumblings

This is Odd Rumblings, a two-piece residing in Brooklyn U.S.A and this is their debut record. An EP of icy grace, haunted atmosphere and devastating pop-hooks pitched in the half-light of a steel sharpened moon.

Audrea Lim and Gabriel Sedgwick are creators of sparsely inhabited pop-dramas, mini epics in chorus and reverb reflected through a chromium camera obscura. Their voices always at play, always at war, twisting in the echo chamber soaring through whipcrack-snares, Badalamenti synth washes, grumbling bass pressure and liquid pads.

They talk of Thieves and Modern War; Wrong Right, Ice Floe, Princess Spoke and Mister Frosty, six tracks bathed in the cold of a dormant snowdrift. But after the Arctic bite, always comes the warm. Their melodies keep us blanketed from harm, smiling through tears. Whether that is flawless vocal harmonies stacked high in Spector Sound or the slow motion synth stabs that tickle the cochlea. Please marvel in the elegant kisses of lead cut "Ice Floe", the cavern techno-pop of "Princess Spoke" the yearning love song to "Mister Frosty" or the freezer burn heartbreak of "Wrong / Right". Music composed of so few elements rarely sounds this full, rich, luxurious, sad.

As we reach the end of 2014, the nights come closer. Our everyday becomes faster, trying to steal every minute in the light. Odd Rumblings are here as antidote to autumn>winter relentlessness, the stormy white-noise of modern life. A perfect pause for breath, but hopefully not the last.
