Welcome to another sonic treat from the Four Flies 45s series. This 7" combines for the first time ever the two grooviest and sexiest tracks from Gianni Ferrio's score to Steno's detective comedy La poliziotta (The Policewoman), only one of which ("Step by Step") was included in the original (and now very rare and sought-after) 7" released in 1974.

Starting the party is the blaxploitation-influenced funk-blues "Rhythm & Sex" on side A, a tune chock-full of killer drum breaks and driven by an impeccable brass ensemble (a recurring feature of Ferrio's style, due to his exquisite brass arranging skills). On side B, the supercool "Step by Step" takes funky jazz into sultry territory, with the saucy vocalizing of the Cantori Moderni di Alessandroni giving more than a nod to the film's comedy-with-crime atmosphere.

Both tracks demonstrate Ferrio's great mastery as a jazz-funk composer and arranger – a mastery that, back in the day, earned him the moniker of "the Italian Quincy Jones". Listening and DJing pleasure guaranteed!

The movie hit of 2014, Interstellar, chronicles the adventures of a group of explorers who make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage. While the film is directed by acclaimed Christopher Nolan (Inception, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight), the epic soundtrack score was composed by Nolan’s longtime collaborator, Oscar, Grammy, and Golden Globe Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer.

Zimmer and Nolan planned to move away from the Batman Trilogy’s scores and to come up with a unique one. Before (re)writing a word of Interstellar, Nolan did something he had never done before, something that speaks to his desire for more emotionally potent work. He asked composer Hans Zimmer to write some music for the film, but without telling him about the genre, title, characters, or plot: “I said, ‘I am going to give you an envelope with a letter in it. One page. It’s going to tell you the fable at the center of the story. You work for one day, then play me what you have written.’ He was up for it. And it was perfect. He gave me the heart of the movie.” Zimmer says he remembers this idea from Nolan’s letter: “Once we become parents, we can’t help but look at ourselves through the eyes of our children.”

Zimmer conducted 45 scoring sessions for Interstellar, which was three times more than for Inception. Interstellar’s score has been nominated for the 2015 Oscars, BAFTA Awards, Golden Globes and the Hollywood Music in Media Awards.

Interstellar is available as limited edition of 15.000 numbered copies on crystal clear vinyl. The heavyweight sleeve has a deluxe “leather-laminate” finish. The package includes a 4-page booklet with extensive liner notes by Christopher Nolan and Hans Zimmer.

‘Beijing Spring’ is a documentary film that is written, produced and directed by Andy Cohen and co-directed by Gaylen Ross. Damian Lazarus has produced a new soundtrack for this acclaimed documentary – an exclusive presentation of music taken from, and inspired by the critically acclaimed film. This soundtrack album is also the first release on the new Secret Teachings record label.

Focusing on a group of artists called the Stars (founded by Ma Desheng and Huang Rui, and including Ai Weiwei and others), this documentary film chronicles the struggle for free speech and free artistic expression, in the People’s Republic of China during a brief period of political reform during the late 1970s, known as the Beijing Spring.

After the police forcefully shut down the Stars’ confrontational art show hung on a park fence, and arrest activist Wei Jingsheng for posting an essay on the 'Democracy Wall' critical of the Party, thousands of citizens take to the streets near Tiananmen Square, marching in protest and demanding the right to free speech – the first such demonstration since the Communists seized power.

The authorities, provoked by the demonstrations and threatened by the foreign media attention, close down 'Democracy Wall' and force most of the Stars group into exile. Recording it all is a daring young filmmaker named Chi Xiaoning. Hidden for decades, footage from these brave acts of rebellion are now featured in AC Films’ ‘Beijing Spring’ for the first time.

Damian Lazarus first met Andy Cohen in a nightclub in Geneva. This chance meeting led to a commission to embellish the existing more traditional soundtrack with a modern take, something more experimental. Within two days of the meeting, Damian was recording musicians playing ancient Chinese musical instruments in a recording studio in Bali. Each musician experimenting around the same tonal scale, while Damian’s friend Millane contributed vocals. After these intense recording sessions, it was back to Damian’s studio in Italy to edit, compile and complete, before the whole album was mixed by the Grammy nominated Bruno Ellingham. The result is a dense, fascinating album and a worthy partner release to this relevant and pertinent documentary film.

This soundtrack also serves as the first release on the new Crosstown Rebels sister label Secret Teachings. Secret Teachings explores music from the outer reaches, often far from the clamour of the dancefloor. Under the Crosstown Rebels label umbrella, Secret Teachings also shares the same mission. It will endeavour to discover and nurture new talent, and champion the obscure and exciting, from around the world. Collaborations with visuals artists will also be at its core. The artwork for ‘(Music Inspired by The Film) Beijing Spring’ has been created by the great Ma Desheng himself.

MONO’s first-ever feature-length motion picture soundtrack. My Story, The Buraku Story is a new feature-length documentary film that explores the discrimination against a group of people – commonly called “the burakumin” who were classed into lowly groups and segregated from the rest of Japanese society. This discrimination is not by race or ethnicity, but rather by place of residence and bloodline, and has existed for centuries – albeit very rarely acknowledged or discussed in Japan. When director Yusaku Mitsuwaka imagined the exemplary score for such a culturally sensitive and significant subject, he idealized MONO to help tell this story through their legendarily cinematic music. Following their recent experiments with electronic textures infused into their trademark dynamic rock compositions, My Story, The Buraku Story finds MONO at their most understated and elegiac. The songs that make up My Story, The Buraku Story are largely built around piano, strings, synths, and choral vocal loops. As one might expect from MONO, the arrangements are masterworks of understated execution with oversized emotional resonance. By far MONO’s most delicate album, it is a fitting document of the band’s first-ever full-length film soundtrack.

“A big part of any scoring project is the process of discovering the musical language that feels like it emanates from the world of the show, like it belongs only to that world, and feels inevitably bound to it. In the case of Invasion, with its multiple interlocking storylines and broad emotional canvas, I needed to invent several musical worlds, and this meant multiple toolkits. I used the orchestra in its traditional setup, but also subverted electronically, I used a variety of different vintage synthesisers and processing tools, as well as solo piano and cello as my main colours. The multidimensionality of Invasion is reflected in the eclecticism of the score, which ranges from a directly emotional approach to thunderous and completely abstract brutalism, echoing the psychological dynamics of the show.” – Max Richter"

Prometheus is the 2012 science fiction horror film directed by Ridley Scott, written by Jon Spaihts and Damon Lindelof and starring Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green and Charlize Theron. It is set in the late 21st century and centers on the crew of the spaceship Prometheus as it follows a star map discovered among the artifacts of several ancient Earth cultures. Seeking the origins of humanity, the crew arrives on a distant world and discovers a threat that could cause the extinction of the human species.

Marc Streitenfeld is a German composer. He has frequently collaborated with director Ridley Scott. Streitenfeld has composed the music for many high-profile Hollywood features as well as critically acclaimed independent films, including American Gangster, Body of Lies, The Grey, Poltergeist and All I See Is You.

Prometheus became the fifth collaboration between the composer and the director. The score was recorded over one week with a 90-piece orchestra at Abbey Road Studios. Streitenfeld began coming up with ideas for the score after reading the script prior to the commencement of filming. To create an “unsettling” sound, he provided the orchestra with reversed music sheets to have them play segments of the score backwards, before then digitally reversing it. The track “Friend from the Past” reprises Jerry Goldsmith’s original main title from the Alien soundtrack.

Ennio Morricone composed and arranged scores for more than 500 film and television productions, making him one of the most influential and best-selling film composers since the late 50s. The Legend of 1900 (Italian: La leggenda del pianista sull’oceano).

The Legend of 1900 is a 1998 Italian drama film directed by Giuseppe Tornatore and starring Tim Roth, Pruitt Taylor Vince, and Mélanie Thierry. The film is inspired by Novecento, a monologue by Alessandro Baricco. The Legend Of 1900 was nominated for a variety of international award, winning several for its soundtrack, including a Golden Globe for Best Original Score - Motion Picture. This release includes the song “Lost Boys Calling” featuring Roger Waters & Eddie van Halen.

Throughout his career, Morricone received an unprecedented amount of awards, including Grammys, Golden Globes, and BAFTAs. Ennio Morricone has influenced many artists including Danger Mouse, Dire Straits, Muse, Metallica, Radiohead, Hans Zimmer, and many more.

The Legend of 1900 is available limited edition of 5000 numbered copies on smoke coloured vinyl. The package includes an insert.

To coincide with the recent Netflix release, Burning Witches Records are honoured to announce the original motion picture soundtrack to The Old Ways by Ben Lovett.

In line with previous scores to The Ritual and The Wind, Ben Lovett has created the soundtrack to your next set of demonic nightmares.

When Cristina Lopez (Brigitte KaliCanales), a Mexican American reporter, goes to her ancestral homeland of Veracruz for a story on witchcraft and faith healers, it’s not long before she finds herself abducted by locals. They claim that she is possessed by a demon and they must exorcise her before they can set her free. Ben Lovett’s score takes you deep into Bruja (witch) territory of Mexican folkore. Live percussion and traditional clay flutes will keep you on your toes before warm piano and cellos draw you in for the final blow of the terrifying death whistle.

Burning Witches Records are honoured to present the David Julyan score to one of the greatest British horror films ever made – The Descent.

Neil Marshall’s sophomore film, 2005’s The Descent, brought the British filmmaker into Masters of Horror territory (and for good reason). The claustrophobic as hell look at a group of women exploring caves while also coming to terms with internal secrets, untreated trauma and if all of that wasn’t bad enough: cave dwelling creatures, hungry for blood, shocked audiences worldwide and solidified Marshall as a filmmaker to watch out for.

Like the cavernous horror playing out in front of us, composer David Julyan’s score for The Descent engulfs its listener in a claustrophobic yet ethereal atmosphere, easing you in with its beautiful string arrangements, before closing into such dreadfully tight sounds of horror. A combination of symphonic and ambient sounds, Julyan uses his knack for world building, utilising the composer’s ability to combine the classical and the experimental into a cornucopia of mood and tone. - Jerry Smith

The soundtrack, realised within the vast interior of Berlin's Kraftwerk power station, employs the cavernous reverb of the space in response to the video's encompassing narrative of scale, time and entropy. Centred around the use of contrabass and elemental percussion, the stark rendering of instrumental sound crafts an evocative portrait of this former industrial site, mapping an overarching texture onto the underlying acoustic compositions. The project draws parallels to Ginzburg's sonic spatial explorations within emptyset alongside Glotman's own forensic examinations of rhythm and tonality initiated through his work as Ketev, bringing the two into a formal dialogue through techniques of acoustic production.

The neo classical and electronic score completely pin-points the film and retains all its unsettling power as a stand-alone listen. Experimental use of vocals and Serge modular synthesizer with more traditional orchestral instrumentation, give the score its genius of restraint and cinematic tones. A real masterwork.

The horror, thriller movie, written by and starring Brea Grant (Halloween 2 (2009), The Stylist) and directed by Natasha Kermani (Imitation Girl) is available to stream now exclusively on Shudder.

12 Hour Shift is a 2020 American black comedy, horror, thriller film written and directed by Brea Grant and starring Angela Bettis, Kit Williamson, and David Arquette. Bettis plays Mandy, a drug-addicted nurse involved in a black market organ-trading scheme

Matt Glass has done an exceptional job creating a unique score to this much applauded thriller. Live drums juxtapose with opera, orchestra and electronics to make a grand statement that this movie and score are never what they first seem.

Burning Witches Records are once again honoured to be working with Director Brian O’Malley (The Lodgers) to bring you the fantastic and atmospheric score to 2015’s cult horror Let Us Prey by composer Steve Lynch.

“The Minimoog pulsating bass throughout the score is a nod to 80’s horror, but I wanted to modernise it too, so all the synth textures are on a Dave Smith Prophet 12, which is a modern classic. Rachel’s Theme was a chance to bring in a more emotive organic tone using cellos, bowed bass guitar and voices. I think the combination of all these elements gave the score its own particular sound.”

Having previously explored the world of 60's and 70's library music with their Nuggets, Connectors and Digs compilations, Lo Recordings now brings to your ears the wonders of 80's library music.

Long derided by those in search of fat beats and funky grooves, the 80's reveal themselves to be a time of unparalleled musical exploration and invention.

As with all library music, an enormous amount of sifting was needed and the man for the job was no less than Ed Macfarlane of renowned pop band Friendly Fires.

As strange and as beautiful as the film itself, the Imitation Girl score by writer/director Natasha Kermani and Kevin Hufnagel is a journey through the cinematic landscapes the movie portrays so well. The wide spectrum of musical styles from electro pop to a stunning guitar, violin score of Natasha’s intimate instrumentation and Kevin’s otherworldly soundscapes. The very astute choices of more traditional songs, by the likes of Tyger, Carl Sagan and MaryLeigh Roohan also make this something uniquely special.

The movie is about a mysterious young woman who materialises in the middle of the southwest desert, where each step teaches her about her new world and her new body. As she assumes a new life, she discovers she has a twin with whom she shares more than just an outward appearance.

Am 27. Mai erscheint die Wiederveröffentlichung der Vinyl des Soundtrack-Album „TRON: Legacy“ zum gleichnamigen Film aus 2010. Damit erscheint der Soundtrack zur Fortsetzung der Filmreihe aus dem Jahr 1982 pünktlich zum 40-jährigen Jubiläum des ersten „TRON“-Films.
Der Soundtrack zu „TRON: Legacy“ wurde mit einem 85-köpfigen Orchester in den AIR Lyndhurst Studios in London aufgenommen. Daft Punk zitieren in den Stücken Wendy Carlos, die Komponistin des OriginalTRON-Films, sowie Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, John Carpenter, Vangelis und Maurice Jarre. Es ist die einzige Filmmusik des französischen Musikduos Daft Punk.

Bei dem Soundtrack handelt es sich um das erste Top-10-Album des Duos in den Vereinigten Staaten. Darüber hinaus wurde es in Großbritannien mit Gold ausgezeichnet. Außerdem gewann der Score unter anderem den von der Austin Film Critics Association verliehenen Award „Best Original Score“ und war bei den 54. Grammy Awards in der Kategorie „Best Score Soundtrack Album for Visual Media” nominiert.

Am 27. Mai erscheint mit „TRON: Legacy Reconfigured“ die Wiederveröffentlichung des Remix-Albums
zum Soundtrack von Daft Punk zu „TRON: Legacy“. Seine ursprüngliche Veröffentlichung hatte das Album am 5. April 2011 und erscheint nun wieder pünktlich auf Vinyl zum 40-jährigen Jubiläum des ersten „TRON“-Films.

Das Album enthält Remixe einzelner Titel aus dem Soundtrack zu „TRON: Legacy“ von Artists der elektronischen Musik wie M83, Avicii, Boys Noize, Moby, Paul Oakenfold und viele weitere.
In mehreren Ländern war das Album in den Charts und erreichte Platz eins der Billboard Dance/Electronic
Charts.

Der Maurice Jarre-Score zum britischen Historien-Monumental-Epos 'Lawrence Of Arabia' (1962) ist eine der berühmtesten und bekanntesten Filmmusiken, die jemals komponiert wurden. Die neue Ausgabe auf lilafarbenem Doppelvinyl enthält über 50 Minuten der von der Kritik gefeierten Originalmusik aus diesem David Lean-Epos, darunter über 20 Minuten Musik, die nicht auf dem Original-Soundtrack-Album von 1962 zu hören ist. The remastered, repackaged set Music From Grizzly Man contains all of the out of print material Thompson recorded for the acclaimed documentary. Richard Thompson's score for “Grizzly Man” Werner Herzog's 2005 documentary film of real life and death in the Alaskan wilderness is one of the best-kept secrets in the British guitarist's epic canon: an instrumental masterpiece disguised as a movie soundtrack. Recorded over two days as Thompson played live in the studio to Herzog's footage – mostly alone, at times in chamber settings with cello, piano and percussion – these tenderly detailed melodies and quietly visceral improvisations are cinema in their own right, rendered with pictorial instinct and the dazzling technique forged in Thompson's lifelong passage through traditional folk, psychedelia, North African modes and intensely personal songwriting. Here is Thompson at his natural best – finger-picking dance; snake-curl twang and singing-wire harmonics – in a solo clarity that runs from jig-like joy to deep-note meditation, the "Main Title" blues march with its echoes of Fairport Convention's "Sloth" to the long night of "Treadwell No More," a harrowing darkness in slicing treble and tremolo shiver. Produced by guitarist Henry Kaiser, Grizzly Man is a record of powerful solitude as bold and majestic as the land in Herzog's film; as intimate as prayer and essential Richard Thompson.

Jodorowsky's Dune tells the tale of cult filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky's unsuccessful attempt to adapt Frank Herbert's classic sci-fi novel, Dune, to the big screen. Composer Kurt Stenzel gives life to a retro-futuristic universe as fantastic as Jodorowsky's own vision for his Dune-a film whose A-list cast would have included Salvador Dalí, Orson Welles, and Mick Jagger in starring roles and music by psychedelic prog-rockers Pink Floyd.

Building upon director Frank Pavich's idea for a score with a Tangerine Dream-type feel,' Stenzel lays out a cosmic arsenal of analog synthesizers that would make any collector green at the gills: among other gems are a rare Moog Source, CZ-101s, and a Roland Juno 6, as well as unorthodox instruments like a toy Concertmate organ and a Nintendo DS. I also played guitar and did vocals,' says Stenzel, some chanting... and some screaming, which comes naturally to me.' The score also features narration by Jodorowsky himself. As Stenzel notes, Jodo's voice is actually the soundtrack's main musical instrument-listening to him was almost like hypnosis, like going to the guru every night.'

This highly-anticipated soundtrack LP was sequenced and mixed by Stenzel with the listener in mind and flows through a four-sides' LP approach. I wanted it to play like the records I grew up with, where every side was a journey.'

The former is a remastered version of the original motion picture soundtrack consisting of incidental music, sound effects, John Carpenter's synth experimentations, dialogue excerpts, and vintage interferences extracted directly from the film roll. The 7" is red with a yellow label circled in black (in pure beachball alien fashion) and contains Ode to a Bell Jar' remade by loyal Carpenter collaborator Alan Howarth (Escape from New York, Christine, Big Trouble in Little China, They Live...), the fan favorite Benson Arizona' remade by Dominik Hauser, the very sought-after When Twilight Falls on NGC 891 by Martin Segundo & the Scintilla Strings (in the real world *James Clarke's Spring Bossa), as well as endless loops of sound effects from the movie to turn your house into your very own scout ship. Oops, Four Flies did it again! Like other rare Italian gems, Berto Pisano's La Novizia was long thought lost before the FF team rescued, restored and remastered it from the original tapes. And wow, it's just one of the best things, if not the best thing, about the 1975 film it was written for – an erotic comedy with melodramatic overtones directed by Pisano's long-time collaborator Giuliano Biagetti (they previously worked together on Interrabang and La Svergognata) and starring a young and mesmerizing Gloria Guida.

The film's low budget meant that Pisano had to make a virtue out of necessity. Rather than using a big orchestra and strings (as is well known, he was a brilliant conductor and string arranger), he relied on a smaller ensemble – almost a chamber ensemble, but with a jazz-like rhythm section – to create sensual late-night soundscapes that exude a downtempo ambience. In a nutshell: smooth, warm, velvety music. The epitome of the lounge sound.

At times, whispered, sexy vocals by (the then ubiquitous) Edda Dell'Orso float dreamily over brushed drums, bass, guitars and electric pianos. At others, we find Italian library heavyweights like Alessandro Alessandroni (whose unmistakable whistle can be heard in "Canto Notturno") and even psychedelic rock influences, as in the acid distorted guitars, furious drums and crazy synths of "Free Dimension". At yet other times, we're taken into more easy-listening territory – "Fiore Rosso", for instance, offers a wonderfully cinematic example of Mediterranean, rather than Brazilian, bossa nova (did they ever thought of using a spinet in Brazil??).

The secret to the charm of La Novizia is that it encapsulates the Italian erotic sound of the 70s in all of its nuances, from the morbid, to the prudish, to the naïve. Because yes, this is a record of nuance and musicianship. And while the themes are in themselves simple, the fantastic quality of the writing, arrangement and production is a testament to Berto Pisano's superb talent, style and professionalism.

Finally back to life after decades of obscurity, La Novizia is a thing of beauty – which, as a pretty bright fellow once said, is a joy forever. Don't miss out on joy.

Pulsing with neon energy, Tangerine Dream's score for Michael Mann's debut film was markedly bold and unique for the crime genre at the time, which is what makes it so iconic and influential to this day.

Housed in a die-cut package designed by Jay Shaw, and liner notes from David Sims, and pressed on 180 Gram black vinyl.

Years before MIAMI VICE, HEAT, and MANHUNTER, director Michael Mann took his first crack at the gritty crime genre with a film starring James Caan, about a Chicago diamond thief, and his last big score. Seems straightforward enough – but though it could've easily felt like a holdover from the New Hollywood movement of the '70s, THIEF plants its feet firmly into the '80s with Tangerine Dream's incredible, and at the time revolutionary, approach to film music.

They kicked off an electronic film score wave – Tangerine Dream alone would go on to score nearly twenty films over the course of the '80s – but THIEF has always been one of our favorites, and we're honored to re-issue it as we approach the film's 40th anniversary.

One of the very rare chances, and quite possibly the only chance to listen to the genius of Ennio Morricone engaging with the musical world of jazz. His soundtrack for the film The Blue-Eyed Bandit (Il Bandito Dagli Occhi Azzuri by Alfredo Giannetti, 1980) is marked by a relentless rhythm that perfectly matches the atmosphere of the film. The film was shot in Genoa – one of the most iconic cities of the Italian detective (poliziottesco) film genre – and stars Franco Nero, one of the leading stars of the whole genre. The main theme, Città Viva, is a vibrant and metropolitan piece, beautifully arranged for big band + trio of soloists, hand-picked by Morricone himself; his friend and collaborator Enrico Pieranunzi (piano), Roberto Gatto (drums) and Riccardo Del Fra (double bass). This is one of the very few times in which Ennio Morricone, who was famously suspicious of jazz improvisation, asked his musicians to be free and improvise, adding their solos to the original structure – the solo viola of Dino Asciolla, one of the greatest violists of all time, in particular stands out. This is the first time the soundtrack has been released on vinyl since its original release in 1982
