With Cuba poised to become more connected to the rest of the world, the Cuban people's pride in a unique musical heritage has never felt more vital. Arising from that lineage, Daymé Arocena has returned to deliver an ambitious second long player, rooting her compositions in Cuba's classic rhythms, Daymé encompasses the rich, diverse musical make-up of her home whilst looking outward too - to the world she has spent the last two years traveling. It's her most polished, fully realised project since meeting her mentor (and record label head), Gilles Peterson, in 2012. Benefiting from Gilles' expansive vision as a DJ, broadcaster and promoter, Daymé has been nurtured to this point by the Havana Cultura project - a platform for contemporary Cuban creativity driven by Havana Club rum.

Philippe Baden Powell - Notes Over Poetry

Philippe Baden Powell (son of Brazilian musical legend, Baden Powell de Aquino) is reinventing Brazilian jazz in the lineage of his father's generation. Balancing the classical with the spiritual, the cinematic with the introspective, and sensitivity with a distintly Brazilian groove, Notes Over Poetry, a new album for Far Out Recordings, calls upon the inspiration of the many musical and artistic greats Philippe has been surrounded by throughout his life.

The great Brazilian poet and old family friend, Vinicius de Moraes used to say that 'life is the art of encounter', and that is what this album is about.' A nomadic upbringing - moving between Rio, Paris and the coincidently named German city of Baden-Baden, as well as touring internationally alongside his father and brother, provided boundless encounters with inspirational figures, too many to name. Touring also gave Philippe his first taste of life in the spotlight: recorded when he was just thirteen, a sold out show alongside his father and brother at Sala Cecília Meireles in Rio De Janeiro, would become the 1996 album Baden Powell & Filhos.

Classically Brazilian in its roots, but global in its outlook, Notes Over Poetry sits as comfortably next to Tom Jobim's 'Wave' as it does to Robert Glasper's 'Black Radio'. Vamos Donatear - a track dedicated to the great Joao Donato - is hot, fluid samba-jazz in the vein of the Brazilian legend himself, while the equally groovy Chica hosts punchy horn arrangements reminiscent of masterpieces by Arthur Verocai and Eumir Deodato. With lyrics in English, title track and the satin-soft 'State Of Music' lean toward the cooler climate of North American Hip/Hop and RnB, while 'For You To Know' is a spellbinding syrup of deep-jazz, flaunting Philippe's innate talent for writing powerfully emotive melody and harmony.

To his father, Philippe attributes key characteristics which have enriched and guided him in his professional life: He transmitted to me the passion and commitment indispensable to any artist.' With his father he also shares an innate pull towards collaboration as key to the creative process. I can't remember a time making music just by myself, I've always felt like a kid with toys waiting for friends to come and play.' Credit is indeed due to the musicians on the album, many of whom are legendary artists in their own right: French jazz drummer André Ceccarelli, who has worked with everyone from Aretha Franklin to Michel Legrande, prolific Belgian jazz vocalist David Linx, and Afro-Brazilian percussion master Ruca Rebordão.

Today we are in the midst of a global revival of jazz as an art-form capable of traversing its once tired image as music for an older generation, with the emergence of artists like Kamasi Washington, Shabaka Hutchings and Takuya Kuroda. Parallel to this, from MPB (Musica Popular Brasiera) to Samba, Bossa-Nova and Tropicalia, new generations of music lovers are rediscovering Brazilian music from the 60's onwards. Philippe Baden Powell's music perfectly reflects Brazil's huge and unique contribution to the global jazz landscape, and with Notes Over Poetry, set for release in Spring 2017, he presents a milestone release in his career as a torchbearer for a new wave of Brazilian artists.

Azymuth - Dear Limmertz / Maracana

Alex Malheiros' earth-shaking slap bass in the first few seconds of 'Dear Limmertz' makes up an iconic moment in jazz-funk history. Next to their groundbreaking disco hit 'Jazz Carnival', it's one of the heftiest of Azymuth's dense and still growing catalogue of floor fillers, along with being one of the trio's most recognized tunes. The flip is home to the equally club ready 'Maracana', another super-heavy jazz-funk belter encompassing Ivan 'Mamao' Conti's signature swing, backing Jose Roberto Bertrami's effortlessly slick keyboard harmonies. Both tracks were classics on the London Rare-Groove scene in the 80's and remain as relevant today as ever.

Now re-mastered from the original tapes and pressed onto heavyweight 12' vinyl, the sole purpose of this release is to make these career defining tracks sound bigger and bolder than ever before, and we honestly can't believe how PHAT these new remasters sound.

Chancha Via Circuito - Rio Arriba

This is the highly antcipated re-press of the much sought afer and long unavailable sophomore album from South American producer Chancha Via Circuito who molds local South American rhythms into global artstry.
Rio Arriba bubbles up from the Andes like percussive lava, seething as it is soothing. Layers of drums play out like water and earth batling heat on Rio Arriba, where South American folklore takes the reins and, under Chancha's steady hand, obscure backwoods rhythms take on a top shelf lifestyle as folklore hits the club. Cumbia made Chancha's frst album Rodante a stand out, Rio Arriba takes his sound primal, rooted in rhythm, but worldwide in scope. The album mingles remixed songs with instrumentals that apply clubland aesthetcs — sampling, patent repetton, isolaton of individual elements — to folky rhythms and
sounds.' The New York Times The sophomore album from Chancha Vía Circuito ofered shufing Latn rhythms, pastoral
melodies, hints of Latn folk, and, above all, an exquisite listening experience.' XLR8R Rio Arriba is a dreamy, neo-primitve mix of chopped-up pan futes, folk guitar, Coke-botle percussion, and booming, electronically treated drums-- an almost shamanistc sound that carries its own landscape: underbrush, riverbanks, campfres.' The only album by Brazilian Octopus is a wonderful mix of bossa nova, pop, Cuban rhythms, jazz and all kinds of cool sounds and vibes that transcends any possible category. Among several top musicians, the band features Hermeto Pascoal, Cido Bianchi (former Milton Banana Trio member) and Lanny Gordin. Presented in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180g vinyl. This is such a unique album. Each tune is a winner, no wonder originals have fetched exorbitant prices in the collectors market, and it has been hailed by connoisseurs such as Nicola Conte or Andy Votel over the years.
It features Hermeto Pascoal, Cido Bianchi (former Milton Banana Trio member), Lanny Gordin and shows an unusual mix of different styles and influences that transcends any possible category: from pop to Cuban rhythms. The bossa nova is obviously also present, as in many other Brazilian recordings from 1969, but the complex arrangements make this record lean towards the jazzier side of things while the organ/guitar/vibes sounds will also be appealing for garage music lovers.
Brazilian Octopus was formed in 1968 after Livio Rangan, a wealthy businessman from Sao Paulo, asked Cido Bianchi to put together a band that would play at the shows run by his fashion company, Rhodia. A proper work contract was issued, including three months of paid rehearsals. Despite their diverse background, most of the members of the band already knew each other as they would often perform at Stardust, a popular club managed by Lanny's father. Hermeto Pascoal and Nilson da Matta joined the band a few months later. Then Mr Rangan approached the band again with a new idea: the recording of a full album mixing tunes written by other artists and their own compositions. The record was released by Fermata in 1969 and the band was then tempted with the idea of recording a second album. However, the offer was declined since the musicians had not received any fee for their work. That was the end of Brazilian Octopus.
Nearly five decades after its first release, with original copies having almost vanished off the face of Earth, now is the time for making this beauty available again

If you're looking for the influence of Italy on popular music it's interesting to compare the careers of two great Italian-American singers, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. While Ol' Blue Eyes steered clear of recording much Italian-based music, his pal was happy to embrace his cultural heritage. This is a compilation of well-loved Italian love songs - second nature to a man who, like Sinatra, was the proud product of Italian immigrant parents. The result is a happy hour (and more) in the company of an acknowledged master. Enjoy this superb collection including "Volare", "Sway", "Arrivederci, Roma" and many more in coloured vinyl.

Novos Baianos - Futebol Clube (1973) LP

A great 70s album by Os Novos Baianos - a wonderfully youthful group that was one of the bright spots in Brazilian music after the Tropicalia years. The band had a style that mixed folksy percussion with honest personal songwriting, plus occasional touches of elements gleaned from the larger influences in Brazilian rock at the time. The album has a sound that's a lot more intimate than later work, with some especially great work on guitar and bandolim, and great production on the band's vocals. Titles include "Sorrir E Cantar Como Bahia", "Dagmar", "Vagabundo Nao E Facil", "Cosmos E Damiao", "Com Qualquer Dois Mil Reis", and "Os Pingo Da Chuva".

Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids - Tinoge Ya Ta'a Ba, Pt. 1 & 2

1

2016 was the year for Idris Ackamoor & the Pyramids: their album "We Be All Africans" (produced by Philophon and released on Strut Rec.) vaulted them among the global top acts of the current Spiritual Jazz renaissance. The strengh of the group is its deep connection to Africa: not just that their music is inspired by the spirit of Africa, they actually founded themselves on an extended trip to the Motherland in 1972.

On that trip Idris Ackamoor visited the tiny town Bolgatanga in Northern Ghana to play with local Frafra musicians - an experiance which changed his life. Now, after 45 years, Idris dives once more into the magical music of the Frafra people by teaming up with master musician Guy One, the no. 1 Kologo artist of the vital music scene of Bolgatanga. On "Tinoge Ya Ta'a Ba" Guy One sings about the power of unity - a unity you hear clearly on this Afro-Euro-American cooperation: a driving rhythm, a eulogizing saxophone, a gripping voice and in total a journey into another dimension.

Dos Santos Anti-beat Orquesta - Cafeteando

Clear some room for Dos Santos Anti-Beat Orchestra from Chicago. Definitively Latin-tinged, it's hard to pin an exact genre or sub-genre on the group. For their forthcoming 45RPM 7" on Electric Cowbell, we picked 3 songs off of their recent EP "Fonografic" that highlight their instrumental muscle and delivers groovy Chicano-noir atmospherics simmering atop a boiling pot of cowbells, congas, and timbales. The band's signature formula of guitar-heavy, percussion-driven sounds moves further into the fierce sonic terrain of traditional Latin rhythms and hard-hitting funk and soul. Side A's "Cafeteando" is a dubbed out descarga that nods to an imagined meeting in the lab between a young Willie Colon and Mad Professor. "Camino Infernal/Phantom Weight" on the B-side percolate as a B-movie action sequence of a nail-biting chase scene. The sound is at once an urgent, uptempo psychedelic cumbia complete with twangy, reverb-drenched guitar then halfway through resolves itself into a commanding strut of Latin funk badassery that vacillates between time signatures yet never steps out the deep groove trench that these lads dig. These are heavy-weight vintage salsa, and organic cumbia vibes that will surprise you at every turn. Essential hot sauce for your record tote!

Totó La Momposina - The Garabato Sessions

Totó's music has been sampled and remixed by countless DJs and producers from Timbaland to Michel Cleis - indeed the trance-like grooves of her tambores and the majesty of her voice continues to be an irresistible formula.
The Garabato Sessions brings influences from Bristol to Bogotá, with new remixes of Totó's classic Adios Fulana. DJ, musician and remixer, Rob Smith (RSD), best known for making and playing breakbeat, drum & bass and dubstep, and as half of the duo Smith & Mighty (with Ray Mighty) provides the Bristol connection with his remixes.
Bogotá-based Richard Blair - from the band Sidestepper - retains the earthy Colombian sound of the traditional African-influenced drums and adds his own dub twist

Nouvelle Vague - I Could Be Happy- Ltd Orange Vinyl

Bossa Nova = Nouvelle Vague = New Wave.
This transliteration was the starting point for Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux's unique project, which, by appropriating the punk and post-punk cannon and running it through the Bossa Nova filter, reinvented the cover band genre, revealing new and brilliant talents along the way: Camille, Phoebe Killdeer (whose Fade Out Lines was remixed by The Avener,) Nadeah, Mélanie Pain, and, soon, Liset Alea. The gambit paid off, with sales of over one million records over four albums released between 2004 and 2010, and world tours that included stops at venues such as London's Royal Albert Hall, L.A.'s Hollywood Bowl and Paris' Olympia. Since 2011, Nouvelle Vague had stopped recording, focusing on an innovative live show created in collaboration with the mythical Jean-Charles de Castelbajac (Ceremony and Dawn of innocence,) and branching out into different projects: Olivier's Uncovered Queen of the Stone Age, and Marc's Bristol, along with his Kwaidan label.
The time seems right to write a new chapter in the Nouvelle Vague saga: with a new album I Could Be Happy' and live show, the band and its coterie of female vocalists continue their time travels with a renewed alegria. Nouvelle vague by Nouvelle Vague and Some Friends is thus more of a nexus of forthcoming projects: a new album comprised of punk and post punk standards imbued with the inimitable Nouvelle Vague touch, and, for the first time, a bevy of surprising Collin/Libaux which prove that the two producers are more than prodigious arrangers.
This album is also the opportunity to gather again the pioneer singers of Nouvelle Vague: Élodie Frégé, Mélanie Pain, Liset Alea, Nadeah and to find other guests as Camille or Clara Luciani.
A worldwide tour is already confirmed and announced. It will begin in Europe and Asia, in the fall, and will continue through South America and the U.S.A. in the new year, and feature the entire crew on stage, around Marc and Olivier: Mélanie Pain, Élodie Frégé, and Liset Alea.

This is party music. A mixture of ska with polka in overdrive!
It's party music from the "rub a daughter" territory, from people who've been through hard times, who live in a parched, unforgiving area of Brazil, the Northeast.

There's gonna be forró tonight and in this groove we'll stay for all to dance and feel all right until the break of day.

SOUNDWAY RECORDS
17.10.2016

LIMITED EDITION, 180Gram LP with bonus 7", 8 page booklet & Free digital download.

Colombian musician, Mario Galeano, the force behind the band Frente Cumbiero, and English producer Will Holland AKA Quantic, have joined forces to create the Ondatropica project.

Ondatropica, supported by the British Council, exists to explore and expand the tropical sound of Colombia in its rawest form and to marry it with contemporary influences from around the world. Ondatropica brings together an iconic group of top Colombian musicians representing both the classic and more modern styles of la musica Colombiana. Artists such as Fruko, Anibal Velasquez, Michi Sarmiento, Alfredito Linares, Pedro Ramaya Beltran, Markitos Mikolta and Wilson Viveros joined a group of younger Colombian musicians, members of both Mario's band Frente Cumbeiro and Quantic's Combo Barbaro, to (re)generate the excitement that positioned Colombian music as one of the most influential in South America.

Soundway's exploration into Colombia music began in 2007 with it's much acclaimed compilation 'Colombia! The Golden Age of Discos Fuentes The Powerhouse of Colombian Music 1960-76' which features many original works from the above-mentioned artists. Fitting then that Ondatropica came together over 3 weeks in January 2012 in the legendary Discos Fuentes studios in Medelin with one of Colombia's most celebrated engineers and producers Mario Rincon.

Ondatropica's eponymously titled double album from Ondatropica fuses traditional Colombian styles such as cumbia, gaita, champeta with boogaloo, ska, beat-box, MCs, ska, dub, funk and creates a progressive collection of 26 tracks that re-interpret the tropical musical heritage of Colombia with new approaches in composition, arrangement and production.

Various - Mr Bongo Record Club - Volume 1

The first instalment in our new 'Mr Bongo Record Club' compilation series - a selection of favourites, recent discoveries and sought after obscurities, which form the basis of our DJ sets and our radio show of the same name. Including cuts by Claudia, Cortex, Dave Pike Set, Fruko, Neno Exporta Som, Connie Laverne, Barbosa and more. The original concept for 'Mr Bongo Record Club' was a radio show that allowed us to air our treasured record collections, recorded and broadcast once a
month. We wanted to create an outlet free from any genre or BPM restrictions, not constrained by the need to beat-mix every record, a space where we could play latest finds alongside favourites. The only self-imposed rule being that it had to be played from vinyl. We have always DJ'd across-the-board, but playing in an eclectic way hasn't always been easy. Recently DJ's such as MCDE, Floating Points, Nick The Record, Leon Vynehall, Four Tet, Jeremy Underground, Antal (Rush Hour), Sassy J and Young Marco - to name a few - have opened things up with very diverse sets to younger audiences; Brazilian samba-rock, next to modern soul, highlife, disco, boogie, jazz, house, techno and beyond.   We're seeing a rare groove like sensibility. A shift towards the attitude of legendary club nights hosted by the likes of Mr Scruff and Gilles Peterson, where you could hear house, hip hop, Turkish funk, boogie, jazz, dub and Latin back to back. At the same time it isn't a nostalgic or retro movement, people have a progressive attitude and a thirst for new-old music. It is a vibrant and exciting time - we are proud to be a part of it.

Moreno, Kassin and Domenico were childhood friends from school. They formed a band and made three albums, each one under a different one's name. Their records are different and very influential in Brazil. Morneo is the son of legendary Brazilian musician Caetano Veloso. You can hear him at age 8 on the first Luaka Bop release ( Beleza Tropical') singing the words Ilê Ayê' on Caetano's song of the same name.

Moreno's record is to some extent the most conventional of the three, even though Domenico, the drummer, plays drums on a sampler and cymbal sounds using sand paper. The next release, Domenico's, had the greatest success in the indie world, while Kassin's album is the most produced (which makes sense as he has become one of the most successful producers in Brazil).
