Miles Davis - Porgy & Bess

Miles Davis

Porgy & Bess

WAX LOVE
05.04.2018

Recorded in 4 sessions in 1958 at Columbia's 30th Street Studios with a large group that included Cannonball Adderley, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones, this album is Miles Davis and longtime collaborator Gil Evans' brilliant arrangement of the 1935 Ira Gershwin classic Porgy and Bess. Miles Davis was one of the all-time greatest interpreters of standards and with the arrangements from Evans, this album might be the best example of Davis' interpretive prowess. A beautiful piece of 1950s jazz on Wax Love.

Blue Cheer - Oh! Pleasant Hope

Oh! Pleasant Hope

"Hiway Man," which opens the sixth album by Blue Cheer, is a far cry from their version of Eddie Cochran's "Summertime Blues," which launched this group to worldwide fame. And though they were the original group to put their amps on "11," Oh! Pleasant Hope is a musical album. This first track, resplendent in heavy vocal reverb, sounds like Waylon Jennings fronting Quicksilver Messenger Service. OPH quickly changes pace with "Believer"'s interesting riff and the experimental production by Blue Cheer and Eric Albronda. Albronda assisted on the production of the self-titled fourth album, Blue Cheer, and co-produced BC#5 - The Original Human Being. It is the production that is a significant ingredient that makes this project by a legendary cult band so appealing.

Januara Tyme - First Time From Memphis

The title alone sheds light on what, upon listening, becomes confirmed. A mix of blues and rock with a touch of soul that never goes bad. Produced by Enterprise Records, in 1969, the label was wisely distributed by Stax. Today, finally, you'll see that the light gives justice to the great voice of singer January Tyme, for many reasons compared to the late, great Janis Joplin. The rest is filled with fuzz guitar and keyboards all over the place!

Dee Clark - Rhythm & Blues Ep

This limited edition extended play 45 (500 worldwide), is Part 2 of our Dee Clark EP collection, and a must have addition to any Soul/ Rhythm & Blues vinyl collection. These Dee Clark gems from 1959 - 1961 are a pure vocal masterclass. Our opening track 'Hey Little Girl' needs very little introduction, penned by the incredible Otis Blackwell, it's an ever popular floor filler. 'Hold On' is real a 'popcorn' gem from 1961, originally released on a special issue 331/3 rpm single format. Billboard Magazine described Dee's 1960 single, 'You're Looking Good' as: 'Here's a smart outing for the swinging cat...' what more do we need to say! Our closing track, 'Lucky Me' from 1961, hails back to an earlier sound, complete with Clyde McPhatter vocals. If you want more Dee Clark on 45, check out our 'Dee Clark Rock 'n' Roll EP VTREP302', taking us back to his mid to late 50s period, where he moved between his Clyde McPhatter and Little Richard sound.

This limited edition extended play 45 (500 worldwide), is a must have addition to any Rock n Roll / Rhythm & Blues vinyl collection. These early Dee Clark gems from 1956 - 1958 showcase his amazing vocal versatility, with his ability to switch from out and out Rock 'n' Roll screamers, to beautiful R&B Vocal Group ballads. '24 Boyfriends (Falcon 1005)' is a frantic Little Richard styled rocker, complete with screaming vocals, and wailing sax. 'Kangaroo Hop (Falcon 1002)' is another up-tempo Kool Gents 'dance craze' recording, hailing from their last recording session of February 1957, surprisingly the 45 credits only Dee Clark. 'Oh Little Girl (Falcon 1009)' is another fine Little Richard styled rocker, backed by the superb Upsetters (Little Richard's band). Our closing track, is the stunning R&B Vocal Group ballad, 'I Just Can't Help Myself (Vee Jay VJ 207)', another Kool Gents cut featuring Dee Clark on fine lead vocals (sounding exceedingly Clyde McPhatter'ish... and why the hell not). If you've enjoyed this EP, check out our second instalment titled: Dee Clark Rhythm & Blues EP VTREP303, taking us into the early 1960s, his most commercially successful, all be it brief period.

There's been the roof-raising world tour, taking in twenty-plus countries. There's been the classic Songs From The Road live album. Cyril Neville, Devon Allman and Mike Zito have all found time for critically-acclaimed solo releases, while Yonrico Scott and Charlie Wooton have lent their talents to the hottest artists around.

Heartsoulblood. The album title says it all. In a rock industry increasingly driven by sales charts and demographics, this second album is the sound of five world-class musicians following their guts and playing tug-of-war with their eclectic influences, whether that's funk, soul, old-blues or hard-rock. This is an album made to soundtrack people's lives.
Respectful of the music's past, but twisting it into new shapes as they stride boldly into the future, this is one band adding to the story of rock 'n' roll - and heartsoulblood is the latest thrilling chapter.
