Recorded in early September in Hollywood, The King was in top form, mixing up tracks from Lieber & Stoller, to blues legend Arthur Crudup, to country heroes Red Foley, Chet Atkins, and Webb Pierce, as only Elvis could do. Tacoma, Washington's The Ventures went from an unknown instrumental hot rod / surf rock group to million selling superstars practically overnight with the success of their very first single, "Walk Don't Run", a rock cover of a Chet Atkins track. With the release of the first 45 came huge success and national tours and the recording of their classic debut LP, titled Walk Don't Run after that legendary first piece of wax. The album is a blazing set of instrumental surf rock and hot rod jams and required listening for any fan of 60s surf and garage. Yet another amazing band from the Pacific Northwest, there truly was something in the water over there.

Cubist blues is considered as one of the best recordings Alan Vega ever did. The combination of 3 great talents, Alan, Alex Chilton and Ben Vaughn, who deicided to spend 2 nights in a recording studio and just follow their instincts, their inspiration, and combine the experience they acquired
during their impressive careers gives a surprising and amazing result.

If a music critic could design their own supergroup, it might look something like the one that released the experimental, unique, and pulse-quickening 1996 album, Cubist Blues. The trio-Suicide's Alan Vega, Big Star's Alex Chilton, and singer-songwriter Ben Vaughn-are outsiders each and cult heroes in their own right. Their unlikely union happened in December 1994 in a fog of cigarette smoke at two barely-lit, all-night improv sessions at Dessau Studios in New York.

After that fateful session, the three reunited to play one NYC show and promptly flew to Rennes, France to play Trans Musicales 1996. Vaughn recalls, 'the place went wild. It was a great reaction. Alan is truly famous in France, so they were going nuts. For the encore, Alex called out 'I Remember,' an old Suicide song. It immediately fell into place, and the vocal Alan delivered was astounding. The memory of listening to his voice through the monitors during that song still kills me. What a gift he has.'

The next day, as the musicians we were being dropped off in Paris for their flight home, the driver handed them a DAT tape of their set from the festival. Vaughn states, 'I put it in my guitar case where it stayed for over ten years.'

'Looking back, it was magic to work with those guys,' continues Vaughn. 'Two nights in the studio, two live shows, and then it was over. That material was never performed again.'

BOB AND EARL have perhaps made more impact on the UK Northern Soul scene than any other duo or individual performer. During their respective careers they have recorded as Bob Relf, Bobby Garrett, Bobby Valentino, Earl Nelson and Jackie Lee. The duo wrote 'Harlem Shuffle' in '63 and it was arranged and produced by West Coast luminairies Barry White and Fred Smith. MEL AND TIM were cousins and were signed to Mel's mother's label, Bamboo Records (managed by Gene Chandler), when they hit with 'Backfield In Motion' in 1969. The disc went to No.3 R&B and No.10 Pop on the Billboard charts selling over one million copies.

BOOKER T. & THE M.G.'s will be forever synonymous with the sound of Memphis Soul, as defined by Stax Records for whom they were the house band. In 1962 they made it to No.1 in the R&B Charts and peaked at No.3 in Billboards Hot 100 with 'Green Onions'. The classic 12-bar blues anthem features Steve Cropper on a Fender Telecaster and Booker T Jones' rippling Hammond M3 organ. The ultimate Funk/R&B/Soul instrumental. THE MAR-KETS (later The Marketts) were a California instrumental surf band best rememberd for their 1963 million-selling album Out Of Limits. 'Balboa Blue' features on their debut LP Surfer's Stomp and first appeared on the Northern Soul scene at Manchester's Twisted Wheel club.

John Lee Hooker, million-selling blues icon, cemented his place in the Northern Soul hall of fame with his legendary 1964 appearance at Manchester's Twisted Wheel, captured forever by blues archivist, photographer Brian Smith.
On that same UK tour Hooker played the hit TV show Ready Steady Go! performing his 1956 recording 'Dimples' propelling it into the UK charts, peaking at No. 23. Here we feature the best of Hooker's self-penned, uptempo 45s, recorded for the black owned Chicago label Vee-Jay.

Nina Simone recorded her landmark debut album Little Girl Blue for Bethlehem Records in 1958. Despite including the Top 20 hit single I Loves You, Porgy and her cool jazz standard My Baby Just Cares For Me, Simone never saw a dime in royalties, an estimated loss of over $1 million!
Here we couple My Baby Just Cares For Me with her jazzy version of Oscar Brown Jr's civil rights message Work Song, a fitting tribute to Simone's life-long campaigning for racial equality

Slim Harpo, aka James Moore, hit pay dirt with his debut solo 45 for Excello Records in 1957.
I'm A king Bee was originally released earlier the same year as the B-side but was quickly identified as the more popular track. The Rolling Stones covered it for their debut album in 1964 and the song finally received a Grammy, for historical significance, in 2008.
The other side, I Got Love If You Want It, is also of great significance. Mod icon Peter Meaden famously reinvented it as The Face for the inaugral single of his fledgling band The Who, rebranded as The High Numbers.

Reprint of the rare 1972 library LP by Maestro Giuliano Sorgini under the pseudonyms of Raskovich and The Bid-On. Originally released in just a few copies for a small label owned by a friend of Maestro Sorgini, this LP includes 12 really beautiful tracks with positive vibes. From Jazz Dance, Bossa Nova, Funk, and some Killer BreakBeat, with lots of percussion, growling flute and honking sax. Reissued with the original minimal artwork designed by Giuliano Sorgini drawn with chalk on a black sheet. Glossy Cinedelic cover. Limited to 600 copies.

Cream by The Black Fire is a nearly impossible to find Italian LP from 1973. A Library album that mix several themes including sexy and psychedelic whispered scat vocals, space synth lounge, lazy bossa with harpsichord, fender rhodes and a lot of congas, bongos and insane flutes; it also includes the killer wah-wah funk tune 'Alcoholic' used years later as the opening song of the kung fu movie Operation Cobra aka Squadra Omicidi Chiama Cobra. A Blues Christmas is a new vinyl compilation featuring the best of the Alligator's two holiday releases, 1992's The Alligator Records Christmas Collection and 2003's Genuine Houserockin' Christmas, which have combined sales of nearly 120,000 units.

Neither title was ever released on vinyl. A Blues Christmas features an all-star cast of blues legends like Koko Taylor, Charlie Musselwhite, Shemekia Copeland, Marcia Ball, Elvin Bishop, Michael "Iron Man" Burks and many more. All tracks have been remastered to sound even better than the original releases.

Joy is Dan Madri and Matt Savage, who have played music
off and on together since 7th grade or so. Their 2002 self-titled
Shrimper debut put a subtly eccentric spin on the bedroom folk
template. Subsequent recordings Hatred & Grief, Devil's Blues
and Sailing Days saw the band expanding its lineup (Ariel Rabinovic
on electric guitar, Matt Dodge on drums) and refining its
production value—but never at the expense of the simplicity or
off-kilter pop sensibility of its songwriting.
On Shallows, Joy's third release for Shrimper, the spotlight
returns to the core duo. The record is a patchwork of new recordings
and older, unreleased material dating as far back as
the turn of the millennium. Each of the fourteen tracks brings its
own character and fidelity to the table—though at roughly 30
minutes long, Shallows never feels disjointed.
Though ten years separate the record from the band's last output,
it feels like a logical extension of the catalog. Joy will be
playing a small run of shows—its first in nearly a decade—to
coincide with the Shallows release.

This 1959 Club favourite, originally comp'd on a Desperate Rock'N'Roll LP has packed dance floors for years and the killer flip is no slouch either. Another band of Brothers but this time from Kentucky / Ohio. This 45 was originally issued on the famed Dixie custom pressed series in mid '61 and features the hot Guit fiddlin' styling's of Dale Gentry who'd previously lit up the Van Bros 'Servant Of Love' 45. Both sides of this rare 45 are crackers, with 'Swanky' being a popular club favourite.
