Ba-da-boom! The Tramp Records crew celebrates its 10th anniversary with one more fantastic release in the Story of series. Another wonderful musician which deserves to be (re-)discovered: Professor Earl Lett. Although his songs have been dance floor favourites of both soul and funk DJs all over Europe, this is the first-ever compilation of his funkiest 1960s/70s material.
Earl Lett was born in 1945 and grew up in Monroeville, Alabama. His musical career started after his demobilization in 1961 when he went back to Massachusetts to go on tour with his first professional circuit band: Earl Lett & the Blendaires.

Roman Polanski's 1967 film 'Dance Of The Vampires' (as it was originally called, but more widely known by its re-named title 'The Fearless Vampire Killers', or 'Pardon Me, But Your Teeth Are In My Neck') is a camp horror cult classic. At the time the film was marketed as a 'farce', which overlooked the fact that this film is fantastically eerie. The major part played by the soundtrack in giving the film this effect cannot be understated, and the cold-as-snow production did much to enhance the bleak wintery cinematography.
· Polish jazz legend Krzysztof Komeda (1931-1969) provided the mesmeric score, as he did for a run of Polanski's films from this period, namely 'Knife In The Water', 'Rosemary's Baby', and 'Cul-de-Sac'.
These Polanski scores are of course his most well known, but Komeda (also a fully qualified doctor) scored over 40 other lesser known soundtracks which deserve attention ('Le Départ', for example), as well as being responsible for the Komeda Quintet album 'Astigmatic', a jazz masterpiece.
· Whilst this particular soundtrack is not typical Komeda, and arguably one of his less fluid records when taken out of context from the film it augmented, it is nevertheless the work of a genius, and more than worthy of its first ever vinyl release.

Two essentials from Ray Charles paired on one natty little 45. 'Mess Around' was one of Ray's first big hits, an irresistible piece of R&B that had floors messing around all over the US back when it was first released in 1953. 60 years on you will find that it has much the same effect - and the same can be said of the flip side 'I Got A Woman', another absolute classic, revived a few years back via Kanye West's usage of the song on his pop hit 'Gold Digger'. Nothing beats the original though!

Amos Milburn shot to fame in the mid-40s and then went on to carve something of a niche making booze blues numbers. Here, Amos is in mainly sober if playful mood as he sings along with snappy lyrics about the fairer sex to a red-hot backing ensemble on 'I Done Done It', whilst on 'Greyhound' he pleads wistfully for the famous bus to bring his sweetheart home.

Rockabilly, R&B or Soul - no matter what your bag, the one and only Elvis Presley has enough power, presence and panache to offer something for everyone, and here are two alternate takes from our favourite Elvis soundtracks, GI Blues and King Creole. 'Pocketful of Rainbows' is a more dancefloor friendly take with stronger rhythm section which was aching for 45 release, while on the flip we have an alternate take of 'Crawfish' with Jean "Kitty" Bilbrew matching Elvis in the mix.

Every so often the soul scene champions a secret record that's too good not to share to a wider audience; here we have just the thing. A record styled on the raunchy sound of Chaka Khan but with the subtlety, confidence and timing of Marvin Gaye. Spun since the day it was released on Northern / Modern soul dancefloors, the charm and sophistication has been completely lost on the rest of the world - probably mostly because nobody ever got to hear it. Those who have seen Miss Nikki Hill sing her ass off agree this isn't just another newcomer on the scene, this is a 'whiplash' moment. Where did this fireball come from Why haven't I heard of her before If you haven't heard of Nikki Hill yet, you soon will, and once you see her perform, you won't forget her.
Hill draws on vintage female rhythm and blues influences such as LaVern Baker, Etta James and Ruth Brown, as well as some of her favourite male singers Otis Redding and Solomon Burke, without being stuck or pigeonholed strictly as a retro artist. Her tough vocal style fits with contemporary sensibilities yet evokes all the great female blues shouters of previous decades
