  • B4: Let The Candlelight Shine
  • B6: (I'll Never) Live In Vain

Full House is the fourth studio album by Frankie Miller, released in 1977. A little more funky than most of his albums but overall, this is another fine batch of songs.

The Andy Fraser composition 'Be Good to Yourself' was issued as a single, and reached No. 27 the UK singles chart, becoming Miller's first chart hit.

It features a mix of Miller originals and covers, including a version of John Lennon's 'Jealous Guy'. Of the five originals here, one was co-written by the man who discovered Miller (Robin Trower) and one of the songs was later covered by Lou Ann Barton.

Bitter Tears is a concept album released by Johnny Cash in 1964. It is one of several Americana records by Cash. As the title implies, the tracks on the album focus exclusively on the history of and problems facing Native Americans in the United States.

And not without success: 'The Ballad of Ira Hayes', about the story of Ira Hayes, a young Marine of Pima, reached No.
3 on the Country charts.

The album is a sensitive, clear-eyed take on the unfair treatment of the American Indian. It's stark and moving, his best Americana album of the '60s.

117 Degrees (1998) is the second studio album by former Guns N' Roses guitarist Izzy Stradlin, and his first musical work not released under a band name. The album picks up right where The Ju Ju Hounds left off, offering a set of 14 bluesy hard rockers in the vein of Chuck Berry, the Stones, the Faces, Aerosmith, and Guns N'Roses.

117 Degrees features appearances from Stradlin's former Guns N' Roses bandmate Duff McKagan and former Ju Ju Hounds' bandmate Rick Richards, also ex-of The Georgia Satellites. The tracks 'Memphis, Tennessee' and 'Good Enough' feature the Ju Ju Hounds lineup, as the songs were recorded by the band before breaking up.

This album rocks harder than most roots-Rock albums of the late '90s. None of his contemporaries were even trying for this kind of unassuming, straightforward, well-crafted Hard Rock.

  • B2: I'll Pull You Through
  • B4: Just A Friend Of Mine
  • B5: It's A Lovely Day
  • B6: I Got Time

Back To Basics does exactly what it says on the sleeve. It is unashamedly stripped back. The snappy lyrics are refreshingly audible and the instrumentation is clean, subtle and accomplished.
Bill Wyman's first solo album in 33 years wears its influences on its sleeve - Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, JJ Cale - and there's more than a passing nod to Bill's own English background. It is that rare thing, a melt of styles and genres that actually work together - uplifting in a jaunty, dancey way and pensive in a bluesy, narrative way.
Bill Wyman's last solo UK album, Bill Wyman, was released in 1982. Back To Basics comprises only his fourth UK solo release. But Bill has not been idle of course. 31 years in the Rolling Stones, author of seven learned books, globally exhibited photographer, metal detecting expert with his own brand of metal detector, producer, composer for film and TV and founder of the very successful Rhythm Kings who release albums and tour regularly - he has had a pretty full calendar. It was only when archiving old demos last year he realised he had around 60 songs he'd never released. He chose three songs that needed reworking and did just that. He put them together with brand new songs and went into his studio to record them. The album comprises 12 tracks in total, eight of which are new songs. Musicians joining Bill in the studio include long-time collaborator/guitarist Terry Taylor, Guy Fletcher (Mark Knopfler), Graham Broad and Robbie McIntosh while co-production credit goes to Andy Wright (Jeff Beck, Eurythmics, Simply Red). On Bill Wyman's 'Back To Basics' you get music that's the real deal!

Because Music
11.08.2015

Django's debut album came out in January 2012 on Because Music and was lavished with praise. It was updated psychedelia that beguiles and delights' (The Guardian), consistently mind-melting and often brilliant' (Q), bursting with ideas' (Pitchfork) and gloriously, unpredictably new' (Mojo). By December it had been shortlisted for the Mercury Prize and named one of the albums of the year by Rolling Stone and NME. They became known from their electric live performances full of energy, and went on to play memorable shows at festivals across the globe including as Glastonbury and Fuji Rock. Their latest album released on May 4th, Born Under Saturn is the work of a band fired up by confidence and experience and propelled way beyond their DIY roots. Like before, Django Django are blessedly oblivious to genre rules. A lot of it has to do with growing up being more into mixtapes than albums,' Dave says. I think that sensibility comes through. Since I was a kid I've always tried to see the connections and threads through music.

V/a - Look What The Cramps Dredged Up: Rocknroll Pearls From The Big Beat Deep

32

Over four sides of vinyl, Lucky Parker unearths nuggets from the rock'n'roll era, as resurrected by American band The Cramps. Formed in 1976, with singer Lux Interior and guitarist Poison Ivy, the two constants in their line-up, The Cramps were part of New York's diverse CBGB punk scene. Favouring a stripped-down rockabilly/garage sound, their repertoire of originals and cover versions displayed a penchant for rock & roll and rhythm & blues, and a predilection for retro science fiction and horror imagery, which saw the band come to be regarded as pioneers of the psychobilly genre, although the tag woefully fails do them full justice.

As well as original songs, The Cramps' albums habitually included cover versions, and Look What The Cramps Dredged Up features 32 of the tracks that were covered by the band. Although most fall into the loose category of rock'n'roll, they all possess a unifying deviancy; rock'n'roll at its most wildly primal and juvenile, the freakish teen music Lux & Ivy idolised and aspired to refashion. Despite their cohesive character, these discoveries vary widely in style, from the peerless balladry of Ricky Nelson to the abandoned rockabilly of Johnny Burnette and the frankly unhinged sound of Fat Daddy Holmes. Rhythm & blues numbers vary from Andre Williams' greasy Bacon Fat to Little Willie John's timeless Fever and The Top Notes' pre-Isley Brothers original of Twist & Shout. Throw into the mix Link Wray's sinister instrumental Rumble, the B-movie horror of The Frantics' The Werewolf, plus classic sides by Carl Perkins, Richard Berry and Wanda Jackson, and you have a fantastic cross section of The Cramps' jukebox.

Stranger Than Fiction: - Rockabilly Rules Again

36

Like any underground musical movement, the so-called rockabilly revival which curiously blossomed in the UK and spread out to the rest of Europe during the 1970s was largely fed by bootlegs or, at least, reissues of dubious legality. However, among the first independent reissue labels to emerge on both sides of the Atlantic, in an effort to quench the growing thirst for obscure US rockabilly in the 1970s, was a handful of rock 'n' roll collectors and record dealers who diligently sought out the original artists and label owners to create their own legitimate catalogues and identifiable brands which have, today, become collectable singles in their own right...forty years and more down the line!

With Europe in the grip of another rockabilly revival, rock 'n' roll authority Dave Penny has compiled the 3CD Stranger Than Fiction, which is devoted to recordings revived in the 1970s on some of those specialist labels. For this special 2LP vinyl edition, complete with annotated insert, he has selected 36 highlights, with Sides 1 and 2 drawing on the Rollin' Rock and Record Mart respectively, while Side 3 investigates the sister labels Injun and Spade, and Side 4 rounds up the best releases on other labels of the period.

Serving as the soundtrack to a series of articles Dave Penny has contributed to Now Dig This magazine, Stranger Than Fiction allows new fans to acquire these classics, and conjures up memories for those who filled the dancefloors of the UK rock 'n' roll clubs in the 1970s: the tom-toms introducing 'Robinson Crusoe Bop', the manic cowbells heralding 'Lay Your Head On My Shoulder' or Pat Cupp's long drawled-out 'Aaaaaaa'm aaaaa...long gon' daddy'. The obsession for obscure 1950s Americana by a host of British teenagers born two decades too late may have seemed stranger than fiction, but it cast a spell that weaves its magic to this day!

Though he started performing in the USA, it was on a trip back to London that he met the players who would become the Playboys, and it was in France and the rest of the European continent that Taylor found most of his success. Inspired by the likes of Elvis and Gene Vincent, Taylor brought rockabilly to Europe in a major way. Oh! Gunquit - Eat Yuppies And Dance

OH! GUNQUIT are a London-based 'rumble-bop trash freak-a-billy' five-piece that formed in 2011 after neighbours Tina Swasey and Simon Wild met each other while frequenting a North London vinyl-only sweaty cellar club DJ night. After an energetic pogo competition they decided to create a group blending their love of wild garage punk, exotica, raw rhythm'n'blues and surf-trash. They have played shows, festivals and events in the UK and around Europe alongside acts such as Black Lips producer King Khan with his Shrines, Fat White Family, Public Service Broadcasting, Andrew Weatherall, Keb Darge, the director of Danny Boyle's Shuffle Film Festivals, and survived a crazed impromptu stage invasion by eccentric '80s pop-punk prince Adam Ant. The group have also done two live sessions for London's only independent art radio station, Resonance FM, and the singles have had frequent airings on BBC Radio 6 (Steve Lamacq, Gideon Coe, Lauren Laverne) Huey Morgan's BBC Radio 2 show and XFM Exposure with John Kennedy. To date, they have put out two limited edition selfreleased seven inch vinyl singles distributed through Rough Trade, the second being single of the week in Artrocker magazine, and also have a track featured on a Japanese compilation of garage rock'n'roll with the all-girl 'Woo Hoo' hit-makers The 5,6,7,8s. Last December saw the release of a brand new single 'Sinkhole' backed with the instrumental 'Stampede' via new One Little Indian imprint Winwin Records. Altsounds.com says, They are a sight to behold with bags of personality and an endearing amount of humour. Their music and performances appear effortless, with lyrics that are macabre and kitsch and a live performance that is better than any art-punks out there at the moment. This is retro pop at its killer best. You know that this is a band that, in years to come, people will be arguing over which cramped Camden basement they saw them in first. Live on stage, the fiery, exotic sound on Eat Yuppies And Dance has been described as a cross between The Cramps and The B-52's, a unique blizzard of horns, spirited howls, buzzsaw guitars, hula hoops and fun, riotous rock'n'roll abandon, a crazy road trip of B-movies, freak shows, twisted carnivals, and adventuring

Link and the boys did not last long on the label. Faster than you can say Rumble, everyone was talking about the new threat to the morals of American youth. their street image seemed to be sharply at odds with Cadence Records' formality, so the guys were dropped. • Congo
  • Bo's Blues
  • Bo Diddley Is A Lover
  • Aztec
  • Back Home
  • Bo Diddley Is Loose
  • Love Is A Secret
  • Quick Draw

Delivering a devastating punch to rock's early '60s doldrums, Bo Diddley Is a Lover bursts at the seams with Bo's uncompromising, rockin' beat. Yep. Industry and the government may have cleaned up fellow '50s rockers like Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Elvis and Gene Vincent, but they didn't get to Bo -- a defiant rocker to the core.

By the time of the 1961 sessions for this album, Bo had relocated from Chicago to DC, to record at his own home studio. He used his artistic freedom to his complete advantage, churning out a series of killer records unfettered by bureaucratic interference. Considered the pinnacle of his collaboration with Lady Bo (aka, Peggy Jones), Is a Lover is also one of Bo's most diverse. Along with rockers like 'Hong Kong, Mississippi' and 'Bo Diddley Is Loose,' the LP also features fantastic instrumentals such as 'Congo,' straight blues ('Bo's Blues,' that is), a call-and-answer with old sparring partner Jerome Green ('Bo's Vacation') and the fabulous ballad, 'Love Is a Secret,' with backing vocals from a young DC girl group, the Impalas (who would hit the charts three years later as the Jewels). On this album, they're also in fine form on the rocking 'Not Guilty' and the title track. And they're not the only gals contributing, as Lady Bo shines on the axe throughout — particularly on the exotic instro, 'Aztec.' Not to be outdone, Bo closes the album with the badass instro, 'Quick Draw' — with strings pulled and twisted to their limit.

This 180-gram edition, properly mastered from the original Chess mono reels, is where you need to be on this album. For sure, for sure.

Reeling from poor management decisions and inter-band strife, The Animals fell apart toward the end of 1966. Seeking a rebirth, lead vocalist Eric Burdon relocated from London to California. There, Burdon assembled a new Animals lineup, retaining only drummer Barry Jenkins from the previous incarnation. Now known as Eric Burdon and The Animals, the group immersed themselves in the psychedelic culture of San Francisco and their sound followed suit. Informed by his inaugural acid trip, Burdon led his bandmates through a fresh, decidedly lysergic interpretation of American blues. While the original group had largely performed songs written by others, The New Animals began composing as a group.

The prophetically titled Winds of Change, released in September 1967, offered ten stellar examples of this new songwriting approach, along with a heavy cover of The Rolling Stones' 'Paint It Black.' Lead single 'San Franciscan Nights' encapsulated the Summer of Love in what became a top ten hit for the new band (and helped get them on the bill for the seminal Monterey Pop Festival).

'Monterey' chronicled the previous summer's seminal festival while 'Sky Pilot' reflected the growing anti-war sentiment as the Vietnam Conflict escalated. Steeped in a dense, layered sound full of electric guitars, sitars, strings, brass and washes of phased vocals, the album served notice that Burdon and company were totally in-step with America's youth movement. Jack London & The Sparrows - S/t

This embryonic formation of Steppenwolf is often credited as being the first British Invasion band not only in Canada, but in the whole of North-America. Formed in Ontario in early 1964 by London-born Dave Marden (Jack London) the band quickly grew a good reputation and a solid local following. After moving to Toronto from their native Oshawa, the band released their only album: the first beat album in Canada to feature only original songs, and no covers. The album has several stand-out tracks, with a (as expected) marked Beatles / Zombies sound, and is often seen in "favourite" lists by well-known rock'n'roll writers. Now rescued from obscurity after decades being unavailable on vinyl, this historic album finally receives its deserved reissue. Limited to 500 copies, with remastered sound and preserving the original artwork.

NOW AGAIN
19.12.2014

Archival reissue of the garage-psych Zamrock masterpiece (1974)!! The entirety of WITCH's second album, restored and remastered from master tapes, and presented as an archival reissue. 'Electrified by a diet of James Brown, the Stones and Deep Purple, WITCH were the stadium-filling kings of 70s Zamrock. MOJO // Our comprehensive overview of Zambia's premier garage-, psych-, prog-, funk-,afro-rock ensemble WITCH, We Intend To Cause Havoc!, is now sold out in its 6LP box set form. So we are making the first four WITCH albums available in archival reissue form. As with our box set, the audio is nigh-perfect - restored and remastered from the original master tapes. WITCH's musical arc is contained to a five year span and, in retrospect, is a logical one. The band's first two, self-produced albums - released in unison with the birth of the commercial Zambian recording industry - are exuberant experiments in garage rock, and are as influenced by the Rolling Stones as they are James Brown. In The Past, their second album, is the perfect follow-up for anyone exposde to the WITCH band through their landmark Introduction.

Cyril Davies And His Rhythm And Blues All Stars - Radio Sounds Of Ep

It almost seems hard to believe but the roots of British R&B lay less in a certain rubber lipped, snake hipped vocalist and more in an ageing, balding, ex-panel beater, nicknamed 'Squirrel'. Cyril Davies helped to pioneer electric blues in Britain as part of Chris Barber's band in 1960 alongside guitarist Alexis Korner, before the pair of them fled Barber to set up Blues Incorporated, the first amplified R&B band in the country. In March '62, after building up a sizeable following at Soho pub The Roundhouse, they moved to the Ealing Club where Charlie Watts, Mick Jagger, Art Wood and Paul Jones regularly joined them on stage. By the end of May '62, the band had a more regular line up and was offered a Thursday night residency at The Marquee in Oxford Street. Their first appearance attracted just 127 loyal followers but by October they were regularly pulling in a crowd of 1,000. In November 1962, Davies left the band to form his own Cyril Davies' All-Stars with members recruited from Screaming Lord Sutch's Savages, including drummer Carlo Little, pianist Nicky Hopkins, Long John Baldry on vocals and black female trio, the Velvettes. Davies soon claimed that weekly Thursday night Marquee residency for himself and subsequently played there every week throughout '63. He also released two singles that year, 'Country Line Special/'Chicago Calling' (at the time the only British single that 'American Only' purists bought) and 'Preachin' the Blues/Sweet Mary'. Within a year of forming his band, he unfortunately contracted pleurisy and began to drink heavily to relieve the pain throughout the band's punishing touring schedule and the cold bitter winter of 1963. The All-Stars appeared on stage with Sonny Boy Williamson at The Marquee that Christmas Eve. Davies was in his element, playing alongside one of his heroes. The first edition of Jazz Beat magazine was already out (dated January '64). It carried a half page advert for Hohner harmonicas featuring a photo of Davies and the words 'For the purist in R&B'. The gig listings in the Marquee advert for January listed all of the All-Stars' weekly Thursday night residencies but these didn't feature Davies. He passed away on January 7th 1964, two weeks before his 32nd birthday. Official cause of death was stated as endocarditis, although leukaemia is often quoted. On January 28th, the first of two benefits concerts in aid of his wife and two children took place at the Flamingo featuring Georgie Fame & the Blue Flames, Alexis Korner and the remaining All Stars under the new banner Long John's Hoochie Coochie Men. The second took place at Fairfield Hall in Croydon on Feb 21st and featured Sonny Boy Williamson and Barber's band. Cyril Davies was on the verge of national recognition. Whether he would have been successful in the long term is questionable, but it remains undisputed that he was the greatest harmonica player in this country at that time. Listen to him wail again. Paul 'Smiler' Anderson, July 2014.

Various - Mr Custer Stomp / Firewater

A native American themed twin-spin, with the top side featuring the Scouts recounting Custer's infamous last stand in stomping, hollering glory. In today's enlightened world, it's kind of questionable of course, but the phony native chants really add to the greatness of this wonderfully kooky piece of rock and roll exotica. Speaking of kooky, Rusty Isabel gets himself all juiced up on the b-side, with a jaunty, groovy instrumental named 'Fire Water'. Both sides guaranteed to rock your own little Pow Wow.
