Boogaloo - You´ve Gotta Have Freedom

THE original Jazz dance classic is finally re-pressed once again on a beautiful 7inch and with the original label artwork.

This cover of Pharoah Sanders original anthem was one of the biggest records when it was released back in 2002 and was played all across the globe by everyone from Gilles Peterson to United Future Organization.
Proper "Jap-Jazz" but recorded in Sweden and produced by no other than Mad Mats himself!

Waves LP

23.04.2019

For the label's second release, Amsterdam imprint yeyeh has brought together two musicians from vastly different backgrounds to celebrate the far-sighted musical potential of the Theremin on the 100-year anniversary of the instrument's invention.

'Waves' is the product of two weeks of studio collaborations between award-winning composer and Theremin soloist Carolina Eyck and Eversines, an electronic music producer who has previously released music on yeyeh's sister label ninih. It builds on Eyck's work composing for 'Theremin & Voice', with both artists playing a part in processing, modulating, layering and arranging vocal and Theremin sounds to create six breathtaking electronic compositions.

Varied in tone and execution, the album's six tracks are arguably closer to instrumental pop than academic electronic music. Some tracks bear comparison to the cyclical melodic movements associated with the greats of American minimalism, while others recall the alien, otherworldly futurism of the Radiophonic Workshop, classic ambient music and the sun-bright bliss of early '90s IDM. Yet despite these possible perceived parallels, 'Waves' sits on its own as a stunning work crafted from the simplest of musical elements.

FURNITURE - When The Boom Was On

Emotional Rescue is delighted to present the first of two EPs from British '80s band Furniture, starting with their much sought-after, six-song "mini-album" - as they were known then - which has recently been rediscovered by a new generation of DJs and collectors. "Transatlantic Cable" compares the cliches of a certain type of American romance - Bogart, Sinatra, Dean - to the reality of life in West London. "They're On Me" is probably one of very few pop songs to feature double bass and the word "newsagent", while "Robert Nightman's Story" is powered by a riff on marimba and abrasive rhythm guitar.
"I Miss You", a torch song so good you'd think Julie London might have cut it. A highlight for many is "Why Are We In Love". This track is a key reason for the revival of interest in the band, with pattering rhythm part and the sweet clarinet melody, creating an atmosphere that has attracted a following among discerning DJs. "A Letter To Myself" introduced the band's new, expanded line-up adding Sally Still (bass, vocals) and Maya Gilder (keyboards), which would endure until the band stopped in 1990.

Brian Ellis - Deep Clues LP

Brian Ellis

Deep Clues LP

12inchHOBO013
HOBO CAMP
15.03.2019

Brian Ellis returns with his most personal and well-rounded LP yet, 'Deep Clues', an 8-track project seamlessly encapsulating elements of funk, soul, adult-oriented rock (AOR), boogie, and electro. Following up his last full-length opus ('Mirror/Mirror'), 'Deep Clues' showcases Brian's studio and lyric songwriting prowess, using a variety of analog keyboards, drum machines, and guitars to create a singer/songwriter approach to modern funk and modern soul. Recorded and arranged to retain a live feel, each track takes you on a new journey through Brian's mind and experiences, creating very emotional and personal sentiments, and commentating on and commemorating modern life, love, and music.

'Deep Clues' starts the LP off with a vintage vibe, an introductory Rhodes-esque theme reminiscent of a bygone televised media era...before detouring right into the full-length track 'Bulletproof', a warm and hazy ode to being steadfast in love. 'Here I Am' truly takes on a library-prog-jazz-funk guise, dowsed in glowing synth layers and accompanied by Brian's shredding solo guitar work, and displaying unfettered and uncompromising wit within the lyrics. 'Brand New Love' is an arena rock-style ballad, featuring 'back to back' harmonic guitar leads and lyrics that personify the feelings that arise when entering a new love affair. 'My Favorite Song' is the lead single of the LP, an anthem for the fantasy California lifestyle of parties and free living, accompanied by your favorite tunes. Cruising along like it's title suggests, 'Night Drive' weaves together hypnotic guitar lines, while chugging through Ellis' manic worries and thoughts, attempting to get away from it all. 'Fantasy' is a powerful critique of modern culture and our ability to edit or shape our realities to suit whatever it is we already believe or want to believe. 'Never Had Nothin'' is a sparse and heavy drum machine and synth closer, a down and out anthem that beckons those end-of-the-night lighters to come out and light up the air, cherishing the past, present and future.

Keys - Voltage LP

Keys

Voltage LP

12inchRIO01

08.03.2019

Keys are Benedikt Frey and Chris Cox, the front and rear covers of a lucid
narrative of an incomprehensible nature. Substance induced Hara-kiri, a human
consciousness leaving it's temporary and insignificant vessel, a motorcycle ride
through the sands of a desolate Martian desert or a twisted eternity dissolved
inside Pandora's Box. These are just a few of the scenes effortlessly evoked by
the epic yet somehow erotic omnibus of slow-motion electronica that is Voltage.
In a time dominated by robotic beat and melody, this 8 part expedition away from
the dancefloor may surprise, disorientate and hypnotise. Allow Keys to seal you
in their infinite vacuum of flirtatious melancholia.

Lcd Soundsystem - Confuse The Marketplace

This iconic vinyl EP from LCD Soundsystem has not been in print and for sale since 2012.

Originally released in 2007, the EP contains two non-LP tracks, including the 12 and a 1/2 minute slo-mo disco workout 'Freak Out / Starry Eyes' and the instrumental burner 'Hippie Priest Bum Out' (made popular on 'Fabriclive 36: Murphy and Mahoney').

There is also a devilishly acidic rework of 'North American Scum' by James Murphy himself.

Beautiful cover art design by Mike Vadino.

Alien Nose Job - Buffet Of Love

After two private press punk singles, an indie pop LP on Anti Fade Records, we bring you an Italo Disco inspired LP from Suburban Boy Jake 'Alien Nosejob' Robertson.
Jake spent six months bedridden with crippling psoriatic arthritis, watching the Vivien Vee 'Higher' video on YouTube, mimicking the rhythms, the melody and wishing he could mimic the dance moves.
Two songs about love and two songs about hyper-intelligent extra-terrestrial beings.
This record is a trend-punk poison.

Ela Orleans - Movies For Ears

'With Ela's music I feel emotional, engaged... I can't help but feel she's always looking for a sense of belonging and it
seems to inform all the music that she makes. Glasgow must have more of that belonging feeling than most
cities because she's spent the most time here, an exotic bird in a rainy city she maybe finds a lttle bit of comfort in. It's
a pleasure to have her here, in this awful time to be living in Britain, her illuminations feel important and hopeful. A
stubborn light; someone making great timeless music out of the humdrum of the everyday.' - Stephen Pastel
Movies For Ears is a retrospective collection of works by Polish-born, Glasgow-based artist Ela Orleans which
navigates almost two decades of songwriting in the heart of the global pop underground. This remastered collection casts
an ear over what Orleans might call the 'pop sensibility' within her back catalogue. Released previously on a number of
small DIY labels, Orleans' music coincided with the explosion of auto-didactic musicians finding their voice in the age of
the blogosphere, artists emboldened by the democratisation of music-making afforded by the internet. From the outset,
Orleans' childhood studying formal music mixed with cut-up techniques, sampling, sound-art and experimentation to
create a distinctive signature cloaked in an innate melancholy and playfulness. Fully remastered by James Plotkin,
featuring extensive sleeve-notes and rare photos from Orleans' archive, Movies For Ears presents an appraisal of the
musician's work, painting a portrait of an artist with an uncanny ability to evoke emotions and ghosts of memories in the
listener.
Each song pulls sunshine from its surroundings, moments of pleasure plucked from eulogies. The Season employs a
hypnotic loop with Orleans's prophetic voice heralding the season we're doomed to repeat. In fact the singer is often cast
as the changing protagonist in her songs: on Walkingman, a hazy ballad heavy with ennui, the narrator is laden with the
world's weight, forever pacing a groundhog day world blank, a pissed-off actor in a Kafka-esque melodrama. On Light At
Dawn we're in a seedy kitsch bar-room go-go scene, a ghostly rock'roll romance with shimmering percussion, poledancing
in a Lynchian half-dream. Movies For Ears' moods straddle memory and fantasy: scratchily invoking halfremembered
exotica, the flickering shadows of europhile cinemas screens, a delicately woven world anchored in Orleans
existential meditations on longing, intimacy, solitude and the search for love. These rich textures in every song don't
overpower some crystalised moments of emotion however: on In Spring Orleans sings simply 'I have been happy two
weeks together,' summarizing that feeling of elation when emerging from a depression, a long winter. It's a moment that
perfectly illustrates the lightness of touch and clarity in the singer's voice.
The power of the loop and Orleans' weaving songwriting that breaks its spell is illustrated perfectly by I Know. Over an
aching chord progression, the vocal takes flight into bittersweet loneliness, Pachelbel's Canon played at a wedding where
only one person shows up. The repeated refrain 'I know, I know' ascends to the heavens as the chords descend to the
dumps and the listener is left in the middle, happy but not knowing why, maybe a little changed, two weeks together. On
Movies For Ears, Ela Orleans lets us into a secret: the rare moments of joy to be found in the joins of the loop, the spaces
between things, the spring after the winter are the moments that last after the day has faded.

Molly Nilsson - History

Long overdue reissue of this Molly Nilsson early release (her fourth), now repackaged and reissued via Night School / DSA.
'I hope you die by my side, the two of us at the exact same time, I hope we die not long from now, the two of us at the exact same time'
By the time Molly Nilsson released History, she had already established a fledgling cult status built on homemade YouTube videos and home-burnt Cdrs. Writing from a distance, it's clear that History is the first classic album in her canon and arguably a classic of the 21st Century underground music panorama. While the methodology on
History hadn't changed from Nilsson's previous 3 albums - it was recorded solo at The Lighthouse, Nilsson's home studio based on a Berlin crossroads - on this record the songwriting reached a new peak and the
emotional scythe cut deeper. Here, Nilsson managed to combine a cosmic, outward looking perspective with an intimate knowledge of the human condition and its place in these turbulent times. In truth, no other songwriter has excavated the modern psyche so clearly and perfectly.

The tracklist to Nilsson's fourth album reads as an early greatest hits for Molly Nilsson followers and also serves as the perfect entry point to a whole world the artist has been building for the last 10 years. In Real Life crystalises the millenial obsession with relationships built online, with a generation paying for the baby boomer's excesses with their anxiety towards the harshness of every day life. It's a call to arms for a generation who fell in love on Skype. On I Hope You Die, one of Molly Nilsson's most iconic songs, the songwriter flips the song title into a tale of doomed romance, a relationship based on miscommunications and the thrill of the other. It's also one of the most heartfelt songs full of pathos written by anyone, an ode to obsession. Doomed romance, life lived on the flipside of day and the role of the outsider in society are themes that crop up through-out History. On Bottles Of Tomorrow, the narrator is sweeping up, in love with the night and examining the remains a society
leaves behind.
On City Of Atlantis, Nilsson veers from the plaintive balladry she had begun to make her name with, embracing trance-like synth and dance music details to create an unlikely anthem using the mythological city as a means to comment on the patriarchal rendering of history by power. With by now trademark panache, she turns complicated subject matter into a glorious song that transforms into an ecstatic pop moment.
Hotel Home, another Nilsson classic, paints loneliness not as a debilitating anxiety, but as a powerful tool that propels the artist forward through her travels. It's a song that hints at an endearing self-awareness also; the writer is never at home, living life on the road, content that 'the world will find me when the time is ripe.'

OST - Leftovers Season 1 / Max Richter

Issued on limited edition red vinyl is Max Richter's emotive and minimal score to Damon Lindelof's TV series about a post-apocalyptic global event where 2% of the world's population disappears without explanation. Richter's approach explores the feelings of the protagonist's family, the Garveys, through intimate, small scale music. He tackles this psychological landscape by bringing a ritual quality to the score, while themes of departure and loss are represented by a sense of sonic decay, relying on the instrumentation of a few sustained tones on pianos, harps and celesta.

Max Richter is a classically trained composer that defies boundaries. Trained at the Royal Academy of Music and finishing his studies under the tutelage of avant-garde composer Luciano Berio in Florence, Richter's career has followed many paths. His musical output ranges from ballets (Wayne MacGregor's Infra), reinventions of classical works (Vivaldi's Four Seasons), collaborations with The Future Sound Of London, Roni Size and Vashti Bunyan to writing scores for film and TV (Waltz With Bashir, Lost and Found, Last Days on Mars) and solo work (Memoryhouse, The Blue Notebooks, 24 Postcards In Full Colour).

Various - BBC Radiophonic Music

31

The reissue of the 1968 BBC Radiophonic Workshop's hugely influential 10th anniversary album, featuring remastered early electronic works of John Baker, David Cain and Delia Derbyshire.

Widely regarded as a major influence on the development of electronic music worldwide, BBC Radiophonic Music is a compilation of short works, often composed as intros to various radio or television programs. Conceived in a time when analogue sampling meant hours of slicing tape with razor blades, BBC Radiophonic Music is brimming with zippy themes, unsettling atmospherics, riffs, loops, clicks and beeps. Insanely catchy yet deeply sinister, this is 'collage music', produced, according to Desmond Briscoe of BBC Radiophonic Workshop, 'with the intention of entertaining rather than informing'.

This is an essential album for analogue and TV theme obsessives, and anyone with an interest in contemporary electronica; mysterious, eccentric and celestial, it is a celebration of one of the UK's most treasured and unique institutions.

Sly5thAve & DJ Center - Paradise feat. Thalma De Freitas (Limited Edition)

DJ Center and Sly5thAve share a love of two things: the drum heavy, 'Samba-Jazz' of Brazil and the transcendent songs of the Queen, SADE Adu.

Coming off the success of Sly's epic orchestral interpretation of Dr. Dre's music, The Invisible Man and Center's Afrobeat-infused dance floor rocket, Dem Say Ah (feat. Akoya Afrobeat), the two come together for this future soul session- fuelled with cosmic synths, driving bass grooves, funk-filled guitar licks and a samba backbeat to match.

The lush vocals on the tune come courtesy of Rio de Janeiro's own, Thalma de Freitas, who styles on this version of Sade's Paradise, dancing between lyrics sung in both English and Portuguese, ending in a smoky jazz scat to take out the song. Thalma's melodies transport us to a magical place that we never want to leave, one that could only be found in paradise. A Paradise that Sade once described in 1988, and now one that DJ Center, Sly5thave and Thalma de Freitas revisit in 2018, with their own style and flavor.

The original artwork found on the cover is blessed by the amazing, Indie 184.

from start to finish. Crunchy vocoder lines, soft pads from the Oberheim, and Chini's experimental
live drumming at the end is sure to make your body move.
'High Life' brings an arrangement of synthesized vocal pads from the Sought-after Korg DVP-1,
which will make you feel like your head is in the clouds. A four on the floor disco tempo from the
LINN drum, a catchy delayed lead & dry bass line form a psychedelic tinge & feeling. This track sets
itself apart, and hopes to please music lovers everywhere. 'Waiting All Night' features Portugal's
underground Funk front man Sair, while Boy Dude (Adam Chini's brother) lays a funky bass line
over the top from start to finish. 'Wanna Do Ya' is a track strictly for the Break dancers & Poppers.
Layered vintage drum machines, Jonzun Crew sounding vocoder parts, and a dirty bass line, set an
aggressive mood for the second to last track. Chini takes you on a wild ride, while closing this track
out with his heartfelt lead solo. 'Clap Boogie' was meant for the 1970's. Chini drives the tune with a

instruments, live percussion, and more. Cruise in a low-rider & turn the volume up. This tune sets
the tone for what's to come from Chini's future production & style, and will leave you wanting more.

Jerusalem In My Heart - Daqa'iq Tudaiq

Genre: Electronic, World (Arabic). 180gram vinyl includes 12'x24' art print poster + 320kbps DL card. RIYL: Matar Mohammad, Pauline Oliveros, Nadah El Shazly, Lucrecia Dalt, Chino Amobi, Sote, Arca, Fatima Al Qadiri, Tacita Dean, Stan Brakhage. Jerusalem In My Heart (JIMH) returns with Daqa'iq Tudaiq, the third full-length album from the Montréal-Beirut contemporary Arabic audio-visual duo, following the acclaimed 2015 release If He Dies, If If I f If If If (ye ar-end li sts at The Wire (#39), The Quietus (#24) and A C loser Listen (Top 10), among other accolades).
Featuring voice, electronics, buzuk and other instrumentation from composer-producer Radwan Ghazi Moumneh (Matana Roberts, Suuns, Big Brave) and abetted by the 16mm analog film work of Charles-André Coderre in live performance, JIMH continues to expand the horizons of its profound conceptual and aesthetic engagement with Arabic/Middle-Eastern traditions. Daqa'i q Tudaiq translates as 'minutes that bother/oppress/harass'—which presumably needs no further explanation—and features two distinct album sides of music. Side One realizes a long-held dream of Moumneh's to record a modern orchestral version of the popular Egyptian classic 'Ya Garat Al Wadi' by the legendary composer Mohammad Abdel Wahab. JIMH assembled a 15-piece orchestra in Beirut, enlisting the celebrated Montréal-Cairo composer Sam Shalabi (Land Of Kush) as arranger and musical director for the session. Anchored by the stately hypnotic pace of mallet and percussion instruments (riq, santur, derbakeh, kanun), the piece unfolds with lush, languid, reverb-drenched manoeuvrings through virtuosic Maqam shifts (Oriental scales). Moumneh's melismatic lead vocals and electronic production sensibility pay homage to the genre's documented historical recording traditions, while pushing things subtly and respectfully into new territories of sonic distortion and noised, artefact-laden transmission.
The song's original title (with lyrics penned in 1928 by the poet Ahmad Shawqi) translates as 'Oh Neighbour Of The Valley', but JIMH takes a different line from the original lyric as the new title for its orchestral-electronic re-interpretation. 'Wa Ta'atalat Loughat Al Kalam' (' The Language Of Speech Has Broke Down') is an expression of wordless love and transcendent communication between two lovers' eyes in Shawqi's poem; JIMH re-titles the song with this line, exploding the sentiment with more complexity, tragedy and socio-political meaning - also prefiguring the formal aesthetic ruptures JIMH bring to the piece itself. Love in a time of politics, politics in a world conspiring against love, and the specificity of Arab diasporic experience in our brutish 21st century. Side Two comprises four tracks of non-ensemble 'solo' material by Moumneh which push rupture and decomposition/recomposition of tradition further into avant-garde territory - voice, buzuk and electronics take the lead on a suite of emotive and evocative songs, including the percussive loopdriven instrumental 'Bein Ithnein' ('Between Two' ) and the stunningly unsettling processed vocal track 'Thahab, Mish Roujou', Thahab' ('(The Act Of) Departing, Not Returning, Departing'). Daqa'iq Tudaiq is a masterful, mesmerizing artistic statement and confirms Jerusalem In My Heart as one of the most engaged and forward-looking avant-Arabic projects at work in contemporary music today. Thanks for listening.

'60s icon Marianne Faithfull released her commercial album Dangerous Acquaintances in 1981. The album, whose title refers to the French novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses contains amongst others the song 'For Beauty's Sake', which she co-wrote with Steve Winwood. She moved back to the mainstream rock territory and released some incredible tracks, like 'Truth, Bitter Truth' and 'So Sad'.

There are few people who can say they were discovered by The Rolling Stones, had a relationship with Mick Jagger, had several songs either inspired by or written about her, such as 'You Can't Always Get What You Want' and 'Wild Horses' by the Rolling Stones and 'Carrie Anne' by the Hollies. On top of that have overcome some serious drug addictions. And despite - or maybe thanks to the fact - that she has an impressive body of work, it's never quite clear what Ms Faithfull's roots are or what she's going to do next.

Dangerous Acquaintances is available as a limited edition of 1.000 individually numbered copies on white vinyl.

Mal, das unterscheidet sie von den Songs der ersten beiden Alben, sind es keine Sehnsuchtsgebilde;
sie haben alle stattgefunden, Dagobert hat sie erlebt. Manche sind bittersüß. Andere todtraurig. Und
wieder andere lakonisch. Ganz so wie das Leben selbst.

Peter Broderick & Friends - Play Arthur Russell

*Limted to 300 copies worldwide* It all began in summer 2017 when Peter Broderick's former Efterklang bandmate Rasmus Stolberg invited him to perform at his new festival in Denmark, with the specific idea that Peter would play an entire set of Arthur Russell songs. As a long-time lover of Arthur's work, Peter immediately accepted the invitation and began to learn a collection of Russell songs. Stolberg put together a band of Danish musicians to join Broderick on stage, and the festival performance went off without a hitch.

Immediately after, Peter starting receiving invitations from other festivals, asking for the same thing — a full set of Arthur Russell songs. Even Arthur's long-time partner Tom Lee took notice of these performances of Arthur's work, and reached out to Peter personally. It wasn't long before Broderick was invited to examine some of Russell's archival work, and asked to do audio restoration work on the old tapes.

Peter's strong love for Arthur's work grew exponentially as he dove into the psyche of his hero, listening to hours and hours of unreleased material. He discovered that some of his favorite Russell songs have yet to be heard by the masses, and felt inspired to learn some of these tunes himself.

It was inevitable that Peter would record an album of his own renditions of Arthur's songs. And there was no better place to do it than the state of Maine, where most of Arthur's surviving family are based, and where Broderick himself was born back in 1987. With a large cast of friends and family, including Arthur's niece Rachel Henry and nephew Beau Lisy, Peter set out to capture his love for Arthur's music with a diverse collection of 10 songs, two of which have yet to be released in their original versions.

Its cover adorned with an original painting by Tom Lee, 'Peter Broderick & Friends Play Arthur Russell' is a vibrant and joyful tribute to one of Broderick's greatest heroes. Peter extends his deepest gratitude to all of Arthur's family, friends and fans who have so warmly welcomed his own versions of these tunes. It is hoped that these recordings will serve to honor the truly staggering legacy of Arthur Russell.

  • 9: Instrumental (Halligans Live Rehearsal Version)
  • 10: Entry (Halligans Live Rehearsal Version

40 years after disbanding comes 'Fond Reflections', the
debut album that never was from cult 4AD band Rema
Rema.
Rema-Rema featured former members of The Models
and Siouxsie and The Banshees and their much-loved
'Wheel In The Roses' EP (1980) was among the first
records to be released on 4AD. Their only contribution
to the label's storied history, they split-up before its
release, going on to form or join bands as diverse as
Renegade Soundwave, The Wolfgang Press, Mass and
Adam and the Ants.
The debut album that never was, 'Fond Reflections'
comes almost forty years after their debut EP and has
been culled from the band's rich archive of reel-to-reel
and cassette recordings, with member Gary Asquith and
mixing engineer Takatsuna Mukai painstakingly working
on them to make the album as cohesive as possible.
The ten tracks pretty much reflect the band's live set
and is the closest to what their debut album could have
sounded like. Worth noting too that although all their
1980 EP tracks are present on the album, they are all
from different recordings.
The 2CD edition comes with a second disc entitled
'Extended Wheel In The Roses'. As its title suggests, it's
the four EP tracks as they were plus 'Entry' (taken from
the same studio session as the EP's A-side of 'Feedback
Song' and 'Rema- Rema') and 'No Applause' and
'Murdermuzic', two more tracks recorded at the same
1979 Albany Empire, London show as the EP's B-side,
'Instrumental' and 'Fond Affections'.

Mehmet Aslan - Ghost Station

Mehmet Aslan returns to his own Fleeting Wax imprint, in order to deliver the first in a series of releases as part of a new project, ghost station, including a collaboration with fellow Turkish singer, songwriter and vocal producer, Idil Mese.

Efsun, translating to enchantment in Farsi, is the sound of Idil Mese transforming an understated, somewhat folksy instrumental of Aslan's into a bewitching and subtle musical spell. Initially tense,
Idil Mese's vocal spell wraps beautifully around a brittle guitar motif, inches above a sea of atmospheric ambience. In it's second half, synthesis and sitar unite, taking efsun into more revelatory territory, employing a playful melody and warm, cosmic textures.

Meanwhile, on 'ghost station', from which the project takes its name, layers of meaning and recording slowly unravel, revealing a compelling soundscape. Recorded in one take, and completed across one night, 'ghost station' began with Aslan and his sampler surfing the busy radio waves of Berlin, eventually settling on a beautiful score broadcast on one of the city's classical stations. Just as soon as Aslan had the frequency on lockdown, the signal disappeared unable to be retrieved quickly enough, if ever. Loosely inspired by the work of Swiss visual artist and musician Pipilotti Rist, the track instead unfolds woozily like a dream, undulating through offbeat bleeps, ghostly voices and improvised swells of noise, while still maintaining it's own quietly propulsive groove.

Sounding more like himself than ever on his own Fleeting Wax outlet and incorporating an impressive range of musical techniques over just two tracks, 'ghost station' further establishes Mehmet Aslan as a restlessly inventive musical talent. -Text by John Thorp

Released in February 1994, Mother Earth's 'People
Tree' is celebrating its 25th Anniversary with the
release of this 180g green vinyl reissue, mastered
from hi-res transfers of the first generation master
tapes. This is the first time the album has been
available on vinyl for 20 years.

Deighton who would later go on to have a critically
acclaimed solo career as well as playing with Paul
Weller and for a short time becoming a member of
Oasis.
'People Tree' was produced over a year by Acid
Jazz boss Eddie Piller and it showed a love of both
soul and the sort of bucolic rock music made
famous by the likes of Traffic in the late 60s. It
featured incredible songwriting that manifested
itself in band favourites 'Jesse' and 'Apple Green'.
Guests on the album include Paul Weller, DC Lee
and The Brand New Heavies' Simon Bartholomew.
The album was a huge success, charting in the UK
and going on to sell over 100,000 copies

Emily Reo - Only You Can See It

  • B2: Balloon

Only You Can See It is a devastatingly beautiful collection of prismatic pop songs reckoning with the complexity of self-possession. Following the release of her acclaimed 2013 full-length Olive Juice, Reo spent five years writing, recording, arranging, producing and mixing these ten songs—at her apartment in Brooklyn, and at various studios and friends' homes around New York. It's her most intricate web of poetry yet, with prismacolor melodies winding through a vast pop vision. Reo employs her classical vocal training more than ever, her sweeping falsetto delivering doubletime verses brimming in metaphor and mesmerizing layered soundscapes alike.

For over a decade, Reo's vocoder pop songs have played with the space between natural and metallic sounds—with every turn of her voice sounding sweeping, symphonic. Recording and touring independently since the release of 2009's Minha Gatinha, she's continuously released a slow drip of pop experiments via artist-operated imprints. On her 2016 single 'Spell,' Reo grappled with all-consuming anxiety, numbness and isolation; here, throughout her latest album, with alternating grace and playfulness, she maps out a constellation of lived experiences that brought her back to feeling herself—facing loss, heartbreak, and death, but also fighting for her health and independence.

Reo's songs have always been imaginative, and here she considers the space between imagination and truth with a heightened sense of tension that seems to have been bubbling under the surface for a lifetime. There are self-combusting soaring synth riffs, sparseness and then engulfing chaos. Melodies that unfurl into melodies (some of which came to her in dreams). On 'Candy', she continues her inquiry into the artificial versus the organic, a song about digitally-facilitated relationships; through robot sounds, she wonders about the confusion of feeling close to someone through a screen, sung from the perspective of someone falling in love with a machine.

'Balloon' is the record's most patiently unfolding mini-epic, one bursting with the enormous energy of an expanding heart; an ode to intuition and growth. It's a song that eventually floats upward as Reo's vocals criss-cross like a hypnotic choir-of-one, meditating on navigating multiple relationships, and the necessity of self-reliance as a prerequisite for them.

These are the first songs that Reo filled out with the help of a live band, multi-instrumentalists Jack Greenleaf and Felix Walworth, adding a visceral energy throughout, with unexpected builds and breaks. Featuring select additional collaborators, namely Warren Hildebrand (Foxes in Fiction) and Julian Fader (Ava Luna, Gravesend Recordings), Reo's singular vision grew illuminated by additions of live drums, guitar, bass, piano, synth, harp, theremin, and sax.

'Ghosting' is her most personal song to date - as she sings about tracing her anxiety and sobriety, her words are clearer than usual, like a voice that has been yearning to escape. 'It outlines my experience with mental illness - depression, anxiety, OCD - and how it made me unable to live even though I was alive,' Reo says. 'It's about feeling trapped inside your mind, not living your life, not knowing if you're really living, if this is what your life amounts to.' So often, the experiences, anxieties and illnesses that define us aren't visible to anyone else; only you can see it. Later, 'Counterspell' is about overcoming the illness she laid out on 'Spell', using the latter track's repurposed vocals to show 'how anything can be reversed.'

In contrast, the buoyant side B opener 'Strawberry' feels all the more powerful, a feminist banger about everyday condescension under the gaze of patriarchy, about navigating fragile male egos in music scenes and beyond: 'Wish you had earned that PHD! In R-E-S-P-E-C-T! How many girls in this city are getting T-I-R-E-D' she belts out. Against the backdrop of 'Ghosting' and 'Counterspell,' it feels like a victory—the thrill of hearing an artist coming into her own voice. Only You Can See It honors what can be the most challenging sight to see: to truly recognize yourself.

Bananarama - In Stereo

For the past three decades, Bananarama's Sara Dallin and Keren Woodward have been one of pop's most influential and revered groups. Their hit packed career happened because they were the mould-breakers. Sometimes reminders of pop genius come in the slightest of touches, the subtlest of triggers. In Stereo, their upcoming 11th studio album, is full of them. With zero complacency and an ever-increasing touring schedule across the world since their last full studio album Viva in 2009 (the band have since released numerous EPs), the duo's creativity, vigour and passion have never faltered. 2017 provided a moment to take a step back from recording the LP, to bring the hugely successful one-off Original Line-up Tour to the stage before returning to complete the final tracks for In Stereo. The electro pulses throbbing through newly revealed track Dance Music; the moody echo vocal effect on the bridge of I'm On Fire; the boisterous Saturday night pure disco Stuff Like That; the Blondie-ish buzz to Looking for Someone; the spare, house music bassline to Tonight. Finishing on a ballad, as all the best Bananarama albums do, on the sad and gorgeous On Your Own. In Stereo is Bananarama back to their pinnacle best, a ten-track total recall on their irresistible pop storytelling capacity. The band have also collaborated with producer royalty Richard X on the stomper Love In Stereo. Richard is not just one of UK pop's great pop producers, he's one of its great scholars, too. Bananarama are, self-evidently, one of its greatest parables, the group who shoved the door open for girls in pop to do things entirely on their terms as the 80s mopped up the mess of Punk and turned it into something real and affecting.
