Favorite Recordings proudly presents this new official reissue of ARIAN: A rare and underrated Disco album originally released in 1981 by PGP RTB label and fully recorded in New-York.
Arian Kerliu was born in the small town of Macedonia, Dibra or Debar. Arian's first recordings for a local radio stations were at the age of 14, appearing in almost every music festival in Ex-Yugoslavia. When he was 19, Arian came to New York City, working different jobs and studying music. His first music engagements were in various clubs throughout the city, playing guitar and singing. He then met with James Benjamin-Fish, well known bass-guitar player, with whom he formed the band ARIAN & FUNKY FAMILY, mainly performing in the best clubs of NYC at that time. Together, they came to an idea to record an album of their own. After travelling throughout the US, they got to know each other very well, and had connected with probably some of the best musicians you could find at that time. Thus they had Sinclair Acey arranging three songs and Hubert Eaves, as a writer of "Still Together", a beautiful ballad written in honor of his wife. By that time Hubert had gained two Grammy awards for Stephanie Mills' albums. Kornelius Cambell also wrote and composed two songs of the album, which Sinclair Acey arranged. The album also contains a great cover of Can't Say Goodbye' by Bobby Caldwell, a song that Arian and James had interpreted almost every night when touring. And all of this completed with the background vocals of Tawatha Agee (Mtume), Shevill Alexander and Sybil Thomas (Raw Silk) .Arian & Funky Family band was then invited in Yugoslavia for a European tour, including James, Kornelius and Stacey, but also others great musicians such as William "Spaceman" Patterson, Zane Mark, Steve Kroon, Trevor Gale, Alex Foster, or Reggie Marks, not forgetting Flame Braithwaite and Meli'sa Morgan on background vocals. Having the material of the 4 songs ready and finalized, the PGP RTB label from Belgrade offered them to release an album, with the idea to also adapt the songs with lyrics from the famous Croatian musician and writer Mario Mihaljevic.Today, Favorite Recordings is deeply honored to bring this brilliant LP back to life. In order to insure the best sound quality, the original tracklist has been dispatched on a double vinyl version, which should please all DJs and music collectors.

Blackman, multi-keyboard wizard played with the biggest names in fusion music including Lenny White & Twenny-nine'. As a leader and featured recording artist Don's keyboard, vocal and composing talents all came to shine on this debut LP, Blackman' originally released on Arista/GRP in 1982. The album became a sensation on the soul, jazz fusion, funk and rare groove scenes leading to it being constantly in demand since. In the UK Don performs every year at The Jazz Cafe' off the strength of this one album twenty years ago! In 2002 Expansion released his first solo album for Expansion Listen'.
Don toured the world with his band and The Marcus Miller Band', The World Saxophone Quartet', with jazz and bassist Tuero Nakamura.. His work on the acoustic piano and other keyboards was recorded on Mary J. Blidge's, Feel Like A Natural Woman' and Janet Jackson's That's The Way Love Goes' Nard' was sampled by Snoop Doggy Dogg' entitled Hustlers N' G's'.

First edit is of an old Bert Stride track from 1983, originally recorded at Compass Point in Bahamas and mixed by FK - this starts with the actual song and moves into dub territory. An irresistible steel drum hook combined with that "Island" feeling and the unmistakable voice of Bert Stride makes for a true Balearic winner. Next in line is 'Thanks But No Thanks', one of those great warm up records heard in bars around Ibiza and also hugely popular in Italy - an 80s jazz cover version of that old Devaughn track from the early 70s, made even more famous by Massive Attack on their debut album. Flip over for record diggers' heaven 'Baateside', a funky obscure library music gem full of sunshine and beach feeling, lush keys, ambient guitars, wobbly bass, floating pianos, edited and with added guitars from KBE - a guaranteed Shazam free 'Cafe Del Mar' vibe. Last but not least is 'Leo's Diner', an old mid 80s Ibiza classic - pounding drums, groovy organ, strumming guitars, dubbed out indie vocals, memories of hierbas and madness. Debut solo album for the producer and DJ Danilo Seclì , titled "Reverse" and comes out on March 31, 2017 Smilax /. The symbol of the famous dj Samsara Beach Gallipoli beach doing dance and dream, looks back on many years of music has long coordinates the collective project Calls Salento Italy, with whom he released three albums and several compilations. For the first time, with this record he makes his musical personality and does so by collaborating with Sandro Cappello, German songwriter of Italian origin. "Reverse" is perfectly halfway between pop and dance. The lyrics of some songs give energy, others, it is the case of "Starlight", are true love songs, electronic sounds sometimes take a back seat. There are two covers ( "Master Blaster" by Stevie Wonder and "Sweet Harmony" of the Beloved), but even then the melodies and sounds of the past are proposed in a new way. It is no coincidence: Reverse in Italian means return and cover stands on a sort of portal in the form of R, facing the future and simultaneously towards the past. "The album is a kind of circulation and recirculation of life and music," says Danilo Seclì. "We 'a loop that tells the emotions that we all live and still live again through music. 'Crazy Colours' (originally marketed in 1979 via BAM label, credited to the New Sound Quartet), is quite a big effort for a library music album, since it features a whole orchestra to back the quartet and soloist Hugo Heredia (always present on sax and flute in the albums by the four musicians). In these eight tracks, orchestral disco music is the main focus: in the vein of late Seventies, the biggest influences are to be found in Quincy Jones and Barry White.

This AA side 12" single brings together two seemingly distant, yet somehow closely related zones of psychedelia. One side brings the original version of Magic Carpet Ride by Kontiki Suite, a dense and hypnotic epic culminating in a wall of guitar and harmony; just the way we like it. Far out.
On the flip, The Time and Space Machine, aka Richard Norris, fresh from remixes of DJ Harvey, Tame Impala and Bryan Ferry, stretches the original out into a cosmic psych jam from outer space. Guaranteed to get the hipsters swinging!

At a time when bandleaders in Nigeria used titles as an affectation, Dr. Adolf Ahanotu was the real deal. He had a PhD in music compilation and Master's degrees in education and communication. He also played a mean tenor sax, an instrument he mastered touring Owerri with the Mirabels. Ahanotu's scholarly background is apparent in the impeccable arrangements and the way each track is labelled with its musical type. The banging opening track, 'Sensation' is disco, notes the helpful doctor. The legendary 'Ijere' is to be considered Remire or Afro Jazz. 'Litany of Freedom' is reggae, 'Cupid' is rock and 'Tropical Moonlight' classified as the blues. The mandatory ode to the nation, 'Happy Nigeria', is labelled as calypso. But these are not dry, scholarly pieces. 'Sensation' reeks of dance floor freakiness not the hallowed halls of academia. And listen to the pitch bend craziness on 'Injere'. Sure, Dr. Ahanotu had studied the rules. But he wasn't afraid to break them. From the freaked-out opening seconds of the title track you are left in no doubt: The doctor is in the house. The eastern Nigerian city of Calabar in Cross River State was colloquially known as Canaan City - a place of lush landscapes, alluring women and delicious cooking. When the Biafra War ended it became a land of milk and honey for bands as well, with jumping venues like the Taj Mahal and Luna Nite Club and a label called Clover, set up local entrepreneur Ben Okonkwo, releasing albums by bands like The Doves, The Visitors, Aktion and The Apostles. The youngest band on the Clover roster was Mansion, a teenage highlife group, led by singer and bassist John 'Holy Mountain' Ebiong. Okonkwo decked them out in flares, repackaged them as a funk band and put them in the studio with EMI super-producer, Kayode Salami. The result was Devil Woman, an astoundingly assured funk/rock album. The title track revels in a '60s psychedelic vibe. 'The Love Song' is a direct appeal to teenage hearts. 'Heaven Here On Earth' has an irresistible shuffling groove while 'You Can't Stop Us' is what James Brown would have sounded like if he'd been born in the Cross River State. Devil Woman is an album designed to set young hearts aflutter and draw approving nods from seasoned musicians. It succeeds in both. - Peter Moore

Unearthed by groove archeologist Betino Errera, this black gem was cut in Paris in 1980 by American vocalist Robert Helms. His French career being rather confidential with releases under his own name as well as Bobby Helms or simply Bobby, the Lay Down Girl album remained a well-kept secret for decades despite the fact that it contained two very strong disco-funk tunes.

Helms was backed by a seasoned studio band including Donny Donable (of Lafayette Afro Rock Band) on drums, Christophe Zadire (of Zulu Gang fame) on bass and Beckie Bell on backing vocals. The session was led by master musician Jacob Desvarieux on guitar, piano and synths, who was already at that time one of the founders of Kassav. These recordings were made under the supervision of Pierre Jaubert, who was a major player on the independent French production scene from the late 60s onward, operating his own studio, famous for also being a much appreciated meeting point for musicians. He is responsible for bringing forth works from legendary bluesmen like John Lee Hooker, Memphis Slim, Roosevelt Sykes and jazz greats including Mal Waldron, Archie Shepp and Charlie Mingus. But to funk lovers, Pierre Jaubert is mostly known for his involvement with the mythical Lafayette Afro Rock Band whose prominent breaks and riffs have been sampled by the most illustrious rappers including Public Enemy, De La Soul, Naughty by Nature, Digital Underground, Wu Tang Clan and Ice Cube to name just a few.

Today, Betino's Records reissues two very sought after tracks from the original album: "Feet On The Ground", cowritten by Desvarieux and Helms and "Sekele I Like It", written by Desvarieux and Pasteur Lappe, the latter hailing from Cameroon was the first one to record the song in 1979. In addition, both tunes get the contemporary rework treatment. Baptman and Betino editing the vocals out of "Sekele I Like It" then turning it into a very danceable Philly inspired dub. For his part, DJ Vas digs the Afrobeat seam on "Feet On The Ground", thickens the sauce with thumping bass lines and adds an "Earth Wind & Fire" feel by putting the emphasis on the horn section.

And last but not least, this 12inch pressing is limited to 700 copies worldwide.

The vocal version features Chloë Sevigny with a beautiful melancholic yet powerful chant to Saint Therese an alchemical figure who's words What matters in life is not great deeds but great love' ring true thru time. Peaking Lights production is a playfully psychedelic mid tempo love jam with a lot of groove.

On the flip is Conga Blue with the instrumental to follow. An upbeat weirdo disco cut laying it down at 120bpm with some dreamy vocals with a catchy line through dark and doom can flowers bloom' as the solid rhythm section holds it together while melodies float by and the clav and synths ride the groove. Originally this cut was released digitally in March 2016 one year later it's on wax.

Peaking Lights are also preparing to release their much-anticipated fifth record - a double album (title TBA) in April 2017 on their label Two Flowers Records.

Sofrito present a unique slice of afro-disco from the celebrated griot, Niama Makalou, recorded in the late 70s.


Descended from a family of griots (traditional Malian praise singers), Niama Makalou moved to France in the mid 70s where she cut this, her one and only vinyl release. At the time Paris (like much the rest of the world) was swept up in disco fever, so along with a group of Malian musicians the date was set to cut a piece of disco, griot style. The resulting mixture of off kilter hand claps, raw string arrangements, Balafon flourishes and Bambara vocals combine with a heavy disco groove to produce a one-off piece of cross-cultural dancefloor mayhem.
On the flip Daphni (aka Caribou) crafts an extended version that distills it into a stripped down and dubbed out groove.

SHIRO SCHWARZ returns after a successful breakout 2016 including debut singles on STAR CREATURE & MOFUNK. Two floor fillers - The B Side featuring a party cut, "BOOGIE GHOST" - a cult favorite from their live performances & the romantic floor filler on Side A with "TOGETHER".

Voilaaa is one of the many projects led and produced by Bruno Patchworks' Hovart, who's proven over the past 15 years, his place amongst the finest producers of groove music in all genres.

On 'Other Life' the creative forces of Scottish producer MAKENESS and art pop four piece Adult Jazz combine to create an addictive slice of catchy disco-not-disco with post-punk influences.

MAKENESS is the name of producer and songwriter Kyle Molleson. Having grown up in The Outer Hebrides it was at Leeds Uni that he meet Harry Burgess, Steven Wells, Tim Slater and Tom Howe of Adult Jazz. Drawing on influences from Afro Beat, New-Wave and techno in 2015 he had his debut release 'Laca-Langa', a thundering percussive track. Adult Jazz released two lovingly received records, 2014's 'Gist Is' and 2016's 'Earrrings Off!' (on Tri-Angle) and have established themselves as one of Britain's finest new experimental pop groups, with lyrics that tackle questions of identity and belief.
Prior to the release on Meno Records, a then unreleased 'Other Life' was remixed by Whities producer Minor Science. 15 dub plates were pressed up and stamped with MXMS, finding their way to Jamie XX, Ben UFO and Roman Flügel, who all played the track. The original track is now being released by Meno Records, with a limited run of 300 12' as well as being made available digitally. Fans of avant-disco will rejoice at the sound, with its loose and un-quantized groove, synth squeaks, flourishes and off-kilter vocal falsetto, it's the artists but not as you know them and totally addictive. MAKENESS and Adult Jazz let their hair down and follow Arthur Russell's advice, 'First Thought, Best Thought'.

Robo Arigo is an extraordinary multi-instrumentalist from Nigeria's Ogun State. A founding member of Pogo Ltd, he played bass, guitar and organ on both their albums and plays all kinds of instruments, including cowbell, on Sexy Thing too. One listen to the record, however, (and a quick look at the back of the cover), and it's pretty clear that playing bass is where Robo's heart lay. Especially when he gets to slap it. The slapping starts early on 'Konastone Ponk', a dippy, funky track where Robo implores that if his music 'touches your soul, get up and dance.' The interplay between bass and guitar is magic - it's clear that Eno Louis is Nile Rodgers to Robo's Rick James, with a bit of Prince and Parliament thrown in for good measure. The funk feels dark and dangerous on 'Girls Reservation' and gets seriously slinky on 'Sexy Thing'. I can't over emphasis what a truly great album this is. The sound is clean and the production is stripped back and funky, a sound Robo would finesse as a producer with his Robbosoneex Music Company in Benin. Listen to the audacious cover of 'Get Up, Stand Up', and tell me that you're not convinced that very Bob Marley songs needs a slap bass break in the middle.
