Same Speed Edits - Same Speed Sambas Part 2

Same Speed Sambas are back to celebrate the sound of the summer in 2017 in their very own unique way. Following on from last year's now hugely sought after debut, they have dug even deeper, searching out for more obscure uses of Brasilian rhythms and coming up with two dance floor delights - one from Denmark and another from right here in the UK - giving them once again, that unique Same Speed re-touch.

Samba Operator takes a rare live recording of one of the UK's finest soul acts of the 80s' biggest hits and re-works it into a mostrous tropical club anthem, while Numero Dois goes down the Samba-Not-Samba route taking a Danish 70s girl band and giving them some very warm disco treatment. The result is something very contemporary sounding that'll fire up the dance every time.

All Same Speed releases are limited, hand-stamped vinyl-only affairs, but also be on the look out for the occasional re-work of more contemporary artists, available for free download as a little treat, to pimp up your DJ sets this summer.

Bosq - Can't Seem To Hide / Take Me There

"'Can't Seem To Hide' will be a bona fide classic of 2017 thanks to its combination of a party-time keyboard line over a relentless groove and Megan Doherty's hypnotic vocal. Nicole Willis can do no wrong, either, as she steps up to deliver further damage on the flip." -Mixmag 10/10 March 2017 Tune Of The Month

Bosq's new single sees him diving deeper into funky disco, creating songs that are more musical but maintain the rawness that translates to a feeling on the dancefloor.

The A-side features a collaboration between Bosq and vocalist Megan Doherty from Social Lovers which has already garnered a "tune of the month" feature and a 10/10 rating from Mixmag. Mark Usher's funk-laden rhythm guitar attack punctuates the song while Megan's silky smooth vocal delivery glide on top of the Bosq-crafted groove with an understated cool and sexiness that permeate the entire track.

The featured vocalist on the flip of this double A-side disco burner is none other than soul-highness herself Nicole Willis, who was featured on Bosq's previous single "Bad For Me". Her powerful vocal style reminiscent of disco divas past along with Mark channeling his inner "Nile Rodgers" delivers yet another future dancefloor classic.

Calling Medellin, Colombia home for the time being, these 2 tracks were the last songs Bosq made in his US studio. Seeking inspiration and surrounded by a new landscape literally and musically while finding new partners to collaborate with on projects such as Body Music with The Rapture's drummer Vito Roccoforte he continues to hone his craft. Along with dropping the Tumbala EP on Soul Clap, the full-length album San Jose 51 recorded in Puerto Rico with the Candela All-Stars and his various remix work for Fania, and Cultures Of Soul to name a few, Bosq's relentless work ethic, output and openness to further develop his sound can only mean good things for Latin, Afro, Disco, Funk, and Soul aficionados alike.

Nang171 - Beach Disco Volume 8

Welcome to the ever so eighth sun-drenched installment of all that is great and summery in the Nu Disco Universe. Back at the helm after a few summers off is Slovenian superhero and all-around Nang buddy Sare Havlicek at the controls. Sare has deftly compiled and mixed a cadre of fine delights for those summer grooving nights (and days).

Things open up with an exclusive from UK based produced Blue Azure, "Wide Awake" is a prefect of the sound we are trying to encompass. Bags of sun, groove with a touch of swing. Next it is off to San Francisco for a combo of talents from The Beat Broker and Sorcerer, shimmering guitar and sparkly synths all in one package. Goldboy turn in a fine remix of the punchy and synth-stabby "La Vache De Dense" from Les Chevaliers Solex. Things toughen up for a tad with Ron Basejam (from Crazy P) giving us a bass guitar driven dance floor work out of Raykos "No Stopping".

The man himself, Sare, is next with his remix of Glasgow based The Korvids getting the summer vocal grooves firing. Also featured is a taster from his upcoming album "No Chance To Dance". Bristol based Situation are next with disco cutmeister Greg Wilson contributing to a fine stomping remix. Talking of Situation their fine remix of underground afro disco classic "Na Real Sekele Fo Ya" by Pasteur Lappe really gets the floor filling. Flanger X keeps the tempo electric with his fine "Back In Business" guitar chopped funker.

Time for some legends next, Pete Herbert joins up with Martin Denev and US House Music vocal legend Robert Owens for a big beater "Pass Me By", Australian cut-up-king Dr Packer doing the business on a remix. "Believe In Love" is a left field quirker from album kings Proper Heat. Things get plucky and bouncy next with "Arp" from the Russian contingent of Kim and Buran. Back to the US West Coast next with Grooving in Guatamala from Aimes.

To round things off it's a slice of slick psych disco from Italtian Billy Bogus and his Caribbean House project. Before a fine vocal stomp from Sheffield based Hiem with their bass and sax driven "Highlife".

Until we meet next summer, a fond farewell.

Mr. K - Street Life / Nubian Lady

Mr. K gets jazzy on this new 12-inch from Most Excellent Unlimited. The breakdown of the smooth R&B staple "Street Life" stands out with a steady four-on-the-floor pulse that contrasts with the funk backbeat of the verses. Working exclusively with this portion, Krivit teases out six-and-a-half slinky minutes of sophisticated groove, weaving percussion and vocalist Randy Crawford's ad-libs in and out of the mix in tantalizing fashion.

As a DJ, Danny Krivit is renowned for his willingness to throw a funky curveball into the mix, and for the B-side of this single he gives us a peek at one of his secret weapons. A year after Yusef Lateef released his hit version of "Nubian Lady" in 1972, pianist Roy Meriwether was at a small club in Dayton, Ohio with his trio and laid down a sprawling live take that covered the entire side of a album, including a bridge that pushed the languid tempo of the original to a sassy upbeat workout. Mr. K's edit focuses on this section, leaving us with nine minutes of gritty, get-down funky jazz complete with thunderous drum break. Whether working as a surefire party starter or a clever changeup, "Nubian Lady" is a dancer.

Funk With Me

12inchPMG070LP
PGM Rec.
15.07.2017

Danny Offia's Funk With Me is a prime slab of Nigerian Boogie. Sinewy and urbane, it's the soundtrack of Lagos in the early eighties. The city was awash with oil money, clubs were booming and every night was a party night - the perfect place for a man with a great voice, a white suit and seductively-clutched packet of B&H Golds. Funk With Me was recorded in London with a crack team of session musicians. Drummer Blair Cunningham was from Memphis and had played with Robert Johnson. Sax player Ray Carless was regarded as the London jazz scene's best-kept secret. Engineer Duncan Bridgeman would go on to work with Duran Duran. Danny Offia brought the songs and the Lagos attitude. 'Funk With Me' is a certified party starter. '10 Years In Love' and 'Weak For You' are sophisticated groovers. 'Sat Nite (Is A Party Nite)' is guaranteed to get any girl on the dancefloor, while 'Don't Make Me Cry' is smooth enough take her home. Funk With Me is Lagos in an album - cosmopolitan, sexy and witty with an energy and spirit, all of its own. - Peter Moore

  • B1: Let's Dance Together
  • B2: Jah Help Us
  • B3: B.m.s. Bowl

William Onyeabor wasn't the only Nigerian experimenting with synthesizers in the 70s and 80s. Goldfinger Doe was twiddling knobs too, no more so than on Let's Dance Together - a prime slab of cosmic Afro boogie funk, recorded with legendary percussionist, Mike Umoh (a.k.a B.M.S.) Goldfinger met Umoh playing with Bongos Ikwue & The Groovies. Bass player Bashiru Musa, was a fellow Groovie too, and when the three hit the studio to record Let's Dance Together, the groove was already tight and hot. The title track, 'Let's Dance Together', is an urgent boogie monster, peppered with cosmic synths. 'Funky Africa' is an irresistible floor-filler, driven by the 'funk in the black soil and the soul in the air.' 'Jah Help Us' is a reggae-tinged reworking of the Lord's Prayer, with added squelchy synth. 'B.M.S. Bowl' It's just an excuse for Umoh to show off his preposterous percussive skills. Goldfinger's extraordinary synth skills are always front and centre. They transform 'Jane', providing a humorous commentary in an otherwise straightforward romantic lament, and propel the funkier tracks to become the heartbeat of the album. Let's Dance Together is an Afro Funk space ship, fuelled up and ready to take off. - Peter Moore

Trunk Records caught everyone off guard way back in 2003 when they embarked on a series of reissues from the off-kilter musical world of Basil Kirchin, with his seriously scored orchestras, science fiction experiments, home-spun psychedelia and avant garde racket.

Now Trunk pulls out the trump card with an unknown Kirchin 1979 electronic floor-filler, in the shape of Silicon Chip. This nearly 40 year old tune contains all the analogue froth, cosmic thump and boogie down bass to get any party started.

Pressed on yellow wax, dead, dead limited, and brilliant. Backed with the stop/start helter-skelter arpeggio'd Silicon Sessions - works a treat when pitched down a little.

Various - A Little Something Radio Vol. 2: London Sessions

Having welcomed in 2015 on BBC 6 Music with a guest mix on Craig Charles' NYE House Party to over 250,000 listeners, Diesler was welcomed back to the show in late January 2015 to launch the first 'A Little Something Radio' Compilation.
Along side Craig Charles the compilation gained support from fellow BBC 6 Music DJ Huey Morgan who featured it on his show too. Such high profile launch and support, along with the 15 wonderful tracks on the compilation of course, propelled the release to become one of Here & Now Recordings most successful debut compilations.Inspired by his podcast of the same name, Diesler returns with the 2nd installment of 'A Little Something Radio' - 'London Sessions'.
Diesler delves deep into the vibrant and rich Modern Disco, Electronic Soul & Balearic scenes which thrive across the global dance floors and festivals, with a selection which reflects the variety of music he plays in his London DJ sets.
The 14 track CD and LP features established acts including Leo Zero (with remixes including Madonna, Lana Del Ray & Florence & The Machine under his belt), Yam Who(remixer of John Legend, Zero 7 & Amp Fiddler), Darkhouse Family (regulars at Fabric), US producer Tall Black Guy (who's fans include Gilles Peterson, Jazzy Jeff & Questlove) and Plateau Gats (supported by Hacienda legend & M-People founder Mike Pickering) well as debuting new artists Narcsus Prye, Ubiquity and Rich Keyworth who have all been hotly tipped thanks to their amazing live shows and work on feature film scores.
Along side European DJ jaunts Diesler also enjoys a monthly sell out residency called 'You Dig', with his DJ partner Simon Ham, at Soup Kitchen in Manchester, which was rated in the Top 10 UK Clubs by The Guardian.

Chaka, Merry & M+n - Scrimshire Summer Lovin' Edits

Scrimshire's edits are synonymous with our imprint, and every one has been of the highest quality, often hand-picking the more obscure works you never knew you loved, from some of your favourite soul voices.

And as we turn 21 (release-wise) he pulls it out of the bag once again, rework Chaka's string-laiden "Some Love" into a monstrous dance-floor destroyer, adding some serious sliced and diced funk chops to Merry Clayton's percussion heavy version of "Keep Your Eye on the Sparrow", and finally, subtly and tastefully turning McNeal + Niles' rare slow and soulful treat, "Summertime Love" into a late night Balearic beauty.

The perfect summer soundtrack and another sure-fire Dubplate winner!

Peaking Lights - The Fifth State Of Consciousness

Their 5th album titled, "The Fifth State Of Consciousness", is a double LP produced in Peaking Lights Dreamfuzz studio over the last two years. It's both a departure from the new and a return to the old with a whole new twist on the psychedelic dub-pop they've become know for. Self released...from the heart! Gatefold Sleeve. BIG TIP! Sonically the double album shifts through many states from beginning to end, resonating deep, like a drive thru foreign landscapes where you're glued to the window as everything slowly changes around you. The flow and pacing of songs has a sense of wonderment and each time you play it there's a whole new batch of lovely sounds and eccentricities within each of the players. While bringing together their love of Psychedelic music, House, Electronic and Reggae each song manages to live it's own life and yet still there is some magical thread that binds them together. Produced by Aaron Coyes, the whole creative process was filled with nerdy gadgetry, playful experimentation and deep alchemical soul searching for a musical medicine. Aaron describes Dreamfuzz as 'a small junkyard with many happy mistakes'. Using tape machines, writing melodies backwards then playing them in reverse, layering sound upon sound to create 'pads', literally breaking electronics to get sounds, and a strict motto of 'anything goes, pure creativity'. Most sounds were run thru Peaking Lights' 1976 16/8 soundcraft Series Two mixing console (the same type of board used by Lee 'Scratch' Perry at Black Ark, and at the infamous Cargo Studios where many of the early Factory Records bands were recorded) to add some 'mojo'. It's an album that is sure to be a creeper even if you don't fall in love on the first date.

Tony Allen & Africa 70 - Jealousy (disco Afro Reedit Vol.3)

We are proud to announce the third release of the Tony Allen & Africa 70 (Disco Afro Series): featuring remastered original versions of Jealousy' and remixes produced by Loya (Reunion Island).

Multi-instrumentalist, initially playing jazz as well as African music, Sébastien Lejeune discovered electronic music when he was living in mainland France. This was the golden age of Warp Records figureheads IDM who had a huge effect on him, in particular the naïve melodies of Plaid and Boards from Canada. During a trip back to his homeland Sébastien became Loya. From that moment on, he started to mix Réunion maloya, Mauritian séga and Indian music with footwork tempo. He blends traditional maloya drums, beatboxes and synths, harmonizing the powerful vocals of Indian Ocean Island singers.

Tony Allen Afrobeat groove inspired me a lot to create the patterns with my drums machines which is the basic of my production work. The Indian Ocean Rhythms formerly coming from Africa recover the true sense on this beats.'

In 1975, Tony Allen recorded his debut album, Jealousy, the first of three made with Afrika 70 and produced by Fela Kuti. Jealousy is according to many still the highlight of his 4 solo-albums, featuring 2 afro-beat gems Jealousy' and Hustler'. Recorded at Decca's 16 track Abule-Oja studio in Lagos, Nigeria. Originally released on Soundworkshop Records in 1975.

Deadly Sins - Giant Cuts Ep

Well, KAT Records reach the ripe ol' age of 21 with an exactly what it says on the tin release being the Giant Cuts EP which pays testament to the versatility that's seen the KAT label take on board varying styles & ge-nres since it's conception back in 2007.

This 4 tracker of gargantuan proportions from edit hot shot Deadly Sins sees both classic and underground cuts getting the royal edit treatment and then some this time, mainly focusing on disco, soul & funk.

Starting proceedings we have El Afro, a wicked up tempo disco beauty with an ace afro disco conga loop, squelchy bass, clavs a plenty and love boat-esque keys & strings.....Proper!
Hot on the heels we have Shave a Pair. This absolute Loft classic gets that all important break beefed up and stretched out to satisfy all your dj & dance floor needs.

Mary's Red Hot Grooves kicks off the flip. Originally by Mary Wilson and out in '79 this rolls funk, soul & disco into one producing a monster of a dancer that is simply irresistible - Again, that the break's been stretched followed by a mighty fine arrangement that takes this track from good to great.

Last but no means least we have Give Me Your Love - Originally penned by none other than Curtis Mayfield and covered by Sisters Love in 1973. Deadly Sins firmly has the dj in mind with this re-assembly laying the building blocks and slowly building from the break then those meltingly good vocal stabs hit followed by that riff. Soul music at it's finest !

Early Feedback:

HARRI, Sub Club, Scotland - Digging all of these, full support and thanks for sending :-)

They have been known to deep soul, funk and disco collectors for decades for their sought after 7' Watching Out/Dazed,' long thought to be the band's only recordings. Egon tracked down Split Decision Band's vocalist and songwriter Gordon Starr Flipping in the hopes of more and got it - with Split Decision Band, Now-Again presents a never-before-released album of devastatingly good disco and boogie from the unlikely city of Des Moines, Iowa. Flipping's collaborations with Prince's stable made him a Midwestern legend, but his band's music is more than an urban tall tale - this album finally proves to the world their merits.

Jalapeno
13.06.2017

The good doctor has been a cherished member of the Jalapeno Records family for the best part of ten years now with three albums and many more singles to his name.

With evergreen support from the likes of BBC6Music and especially Craig Charles his back catalogue never seemed to fall out of fashion and we consistently received requests to reissue classic tracks on vinyl for discerning DJs and fans.

Well we're not the types to argue with anyone and frankly we thought that they might have a good point so we've relented and are releasing a special 7" vinyl with two versions of his seminal track 'Disco Scene'.

Of course the classic original mix is present and the frantically energetic 'Breaks Of Wrath Re-Edit' has got its back...One vinyl, two banging mixes, many happy people - it's just simple maths really.

Timmy Thomas - Africano / Why Can't We Live Together

Reissue of a classic !
.
The Label: TK Records in essence represents the city of Miami when it came to Soul/R&B and the early stages of Disco. In 1974, George McCrae gave the label its first #1 Disco hit with Rock Your Baby. A little more than a year after McCrae's hit, the record label struck gold with KC & The Sunshine Band with five #1 songs on the Billboard Hot 100. Needless to say at the height of the genre's cultural domination TK did pretty well. Timmy Thomas: Without a doubt, he's most famously known for the hit song Why Can't We Live Together. The record topped the U.S. Billboard R&B chart, made the top three in the Billboard Hot 100 and was charted in top 10 in many countries including the UK. A staple in the R&B scene, he had a succesful solo career until the mid 80s, later focusing on the writing and production side of the business. Why Can't We Live Together: It may have been his biggest hit, but also one that keeps resonating to this day. A response to the devastating news coming from the war in Vietnam, its words No more wars, we want peace in this world, and no matter what color, you're still my brother.' are indicative of a time marked by the horrors of war abroad, and the racial discrimination in America. Written and Produced by Timmy Thomas himself solely on a Lowrey organ, and an early rhythm machine, the song however was far from simple as its emotive message continues to provide a profound context. And even though it's been covered over the years by many artist including Sade and Joan Osborne, Why Can't We Live Together has managed to come back on the charts again in 2015, as the
instrumental backing to Drake's Hotline Bling, which has now sold over 2 Million copies in the U.S. Alone. Once a hit, always a hit. Africano: When it comes to this Deep Disco cut, Africano is one of those tracks that probably never got much shine in America, but has since become a dancefloor favorite of underground disco DJs worldwide. Curiously, years after its release, its biggest supporters were Italian DJs like Danielle Baldelli, Mozart and Gianni Maselli who during the 80s played Disco, African records, American R&B, and reggae to create what has been since become known as the Afro-Cosmic scene at the height of Club culture in the discothèques of Northern Italy.

Magic In Threes - At Jodys/a Breezy Day

Hailing from Nashville, Tennessee the smoked out instrumentalist trio Magic In Threes are highly influenced by library records, old film soundtracks, and hip hop tapes. They were formed in 2010 as a side project to their work with DeRobert & The Half-Truths. Following a long line of solid and well-received releases on Nashville's own G.E.D Soul Records, KU started their investigation into the chances of signing the group.

In 2016, Magic In Threes members, Dave Singleton, Nick DeVan, and Mark Spain set a goal to record and release a new track every week. You are about to hear two of them. The a-
side At Jody's' was recorded at flautist Jody Douglas's house in the Sylvan Park neighbourhood of Nashville, Tennessee. Breezy Day' was recorded at DeVan's Poor Man Studios in Madison, Tennessee. We think you'll agree, it's quite blazed out.
