Sivert Høyem's album Endless Love is a dark colored and breeding record, where loss and his search for happiness are deeply rooted in the lyrics and music. Highlights of this rock-solid album are the overwhelming piano ballad 'Inner Vision', and the ominously beautiful 'Görlitzer Park'. Høyem manages to create a rare, obscure beauty with a voice that is deep and dark. Shortly after the recording of Endless Love his manager Per Eirik Johansen died, the man who supported him since the beginning of his career.

DEAFKIDS is one of the most exciting bands I have heard in a very long time. They are a unique psychoactive journey of Brazilian polyrhythmic percussion, hypnotic chanting, and aggressive repetitive raw punk all echoing out from another dimension.  Having had the blessed opportunity to play several shows with them in Europe and Brazil I can say that without a doubt, they are something new and mind blowing created from something old and primal.  Their youthful energy is contagious and their wisdom and deep knowledge of sound is beyond their years. While their previous release, 'Configuração do Lamento', captured the group as they delved deep into their own musical world of diverse and discordant characteristics 'Metaprogramação' takes this blend to entirely new extremes. In a narrative where songs melt and dissolve into one another, electronic pulses blend into the power of rhythmic and percussive fabrics frantically woven to imprint this 'future-primitive psychic scenario' into the songs. Difficult to describe or pigeonhole - yet, all the elements which characterize the band's punk and aggressive aesthetic are present (even if in unpredictable and surprising ways) - barrages of delay and noise, wailing guitars, dancing frenzied rhythms - all culminating in a wild psychedelic journey that's bound to reach one's mind through the body while inebriating both.
"Deceived by perceiving our so-called individuality as a form of freedom, we are programmed to live and continue living as a fragmented and binary model of nature. Experimental numbers in a worldwide political power-game where human lives and it's complexities, connections, necessities and environments are lowered in terms manipulated by algorithms, mind control and brutal force upon our conditions, our rights and our true will. Shaping, overwhelming and fragmenting our tunnels of perception to the point where the excess of information becomes diffuse and the whole contained within each being is more and more dispersed, confused and disconnected, reflecting an insane image of one's identification with an artificial reality - where in some bizarre way, all these schizofrenic, corrupted and truculent theaters of domination and submission that appears all over human relations seems to make some sense - and of non-identification with what would be our inner reality, the telepathic level behind the veils where boundaries and divisions between us and the plane of consciousness, between you and the other don't really exist. A level of reality where we might have the power to start learning how to reprogram ourselves by our own tools, being able to visit our internal hall of mirrors beyond space and time and deal with the negative roots of our condensed emotions and traumas trough a new perspective of relation and control with our thoughts, paths and everything we're connected with. We must unite as one and resist against the violent symbols of opression, including what's imprinted on our own self, that must be daily sacrificed. Do not allow yourself to be programmed."

Metaprogramação offers a vertiginous, sensory insight on these inner conflicts and aspects of the animal being.

Their first proper full-length after a series of EPs and singles, Rites of Despair is the resulting vision of two years' worth of tumult, including relocations, lineup changes, life and death. Divided between two Acts, Act I: Depersonalization & Act II: Derealization, Rites of Despair explores themes of isolation, depression, decay, tumultuous self discovery, and abandonment.

Rites of Despair is the descent into sludging funeral doom madness. Melodic interludes and numerous guest vocal spots drive home the narrative with absolute sonic dread.

Tracking and engineering was completed by both Alec Rodriguez at New Alliance in Cambridge, MA, as well as Andrew Oswald at Secret Bathroom in Oakland, CA. Mastering completed by Magnus Lindberg of Cult of Luna.

As tradition, Rites of Despair contains artwork from the vision of Bryan Clovenhoov Proteau, who has worked with Fórn on imagery for all of their solo releases to date.

Started in 2017 as the solo project of Carl Skildum (Antiverse, Threadbare, live guitarist for Obsequiae, Majesties, and more) and now featuring the RIAA-certified gold producer Matt Kirkwold, Inexorum present their debut album 'Lore Of The Lakes'. An ode to the spirit of 90's black metal, 'Lore of the Lakes' sees Skildum and Kirkwold at the height of their musical writing prowess.

Melodic guitar harmonies cascade against driving rhythms and capture that same sense of exhilaration and aggression that formative bands such as Dawn, Sacramentum, and more have pioneered in years past.

Recorded and mixed at the home of Skildum in Minnesota, 'Lore of the Lakes' is an album that deals with the ebbs and flows of perseverance, even in the face of inevitable loss. 'Our time is finite,' Skildum says, 'but each of us has the power to reshape the world in small but meaningful ways.'

Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From A Memory is the fifth studio album by American progressive metal/rock band Dream Theater. Originally released in 1999, it was recorded at BearTracks Studios in New York, where the band had previously recorded their second studio album Images And Words and the EP A Change of Seasons. The album is the sequel to 'Metropolis-Part I: The Miracle And The Sleeper', a song previously featured on the band's 1992 album Images and Words. It was the first album to feature Jordan Rudess on keyboards. Souls Of Black is the fourth studio album by American thrash metal band Testament. The album was released in 1990. It preceded several changes in style to rather diverse styles of metal, including the traditional heavy metal sound heard in its succeeding album, The Ritual. In order to promote Souls of Black, Testament supported Megadeth, Slayer and Suicidal Tendencies in Europe on the Clash of the Titans tour. Souls of Black is also seen as an influential guitar album, being ranked number nine on Guitar World magazine's top ten list of guitar albums of 1990.

Testament is often credited as one of the most popular and influential bands of the thrash metal scene, as well as one of the leaders of the second wave of the genre in the late 1980s.

Bloody Kisses is the third studio album by the successful gothic metal band Type O Negative. The last recording to feature the band's original line-up is an album of an exceptionally high level. Frontman Peter Steele's satirical humor is mixed in heavy soundscapes and creepy guitar riffs. They have matured as songwriters and the sounds goes from the doom to the trash metal. Bloody Kisses starts off with two of the group's most universally recognized songs, "Christian Woman" and "Black No.1". Esens, Germany. Nestled at whatever-end of Lower Saxony, where the East Frisian Islands form a barrier against the wailing North Sea, the town of 7,000 has slept the years away. Most people haven't heard of Esens, once home to Baroque composer Philipp Heinrich Erlebach. But if they have, they've often confused it with Essen, Germany's ninth largest city. Well, that's about to change. Not the confusing part, but the fact that rising death metal stars NAILED TO OBSCURITY are about to put Esens on the proverbial map with new album, 'Black Frost', their first for Nuclear Blast Records.
Formed in 2005 by teenagers Jan-Ole Lamberti (guitars) and Volker Dieken (guitars), NAILED TO OBSCURITY went through the usual ups and downs as a band. The Germans took their name from a song off HATE ETERNAL's debut album, 'Conquering The Throne', but that's another story for another time. Mere months after forming, NAILED TO OBSCURITY issued their first demo, 'Our Darkness'. While most bands live and die on the possibility of signing a label deal, NAILED TO OBSCURITY persevered, releasing their debut album, 'Abyss', independently in 2007. Certainly, line-up shifts were part of the progression as a band, but Lamberti and Dieken -the band's primary songwriters -pushed on, with Jann Hillrichs (drums) and Carsten Schorn (bass) forming the rhythmic foundation. By the time, the group ushered in 'Opaque' in 2013 and 'King Delusion' in 2017 -both for German independent Apostasy Records -they were a different band entirely. BURIAL VAULT vocalist Raimund Ennenga had replaced Alexander Dirks in 2012, and the rest, at least for the present, is history.
Today, NAILED TO OBSCURITY remain Lamberti and Dieken's labor of love, but the duo are far from authoritarian in the way they write music. In fact, while the two axe-slingers comprise the creative core, NAILED TO OBSCURITY complete songs as a band. Songs like 'Tears Of The Eyeless,' 'The Aberrant Host,' 'Road To Perdition,' and the magnificent title track were part of NAILED TO OBSCURITY's weekend forays into the depths of melodic death metal (and beyond). Lyrically, 'Black Frost' continues Ennenga's fascination with struggle, strife, and self-control. The album title was plucked from a concept inspired by seafaring terminology. While at sea, ships may become over-burdened by black frost, a phenomenon where fog or rain freezes to the moorings or masts causing ships to become unbalanced. Unbalanced ships capsize easily. Ennenga took this concept to heart, applying it to humans, who struggle to control fear, anger, or rage. The idea is a cautionary tale to all of us to not let the black frost over-burden our minds.
Where NAILED TO OBSCURITY take 'Black Frost' from here is on tour. As much as the Germans enjoy the creative process and working in the studio, they are, in the end, a live band. A really good live band. They have the track record - where they were either direct support for ARCH ENEMY, PARADISE LOST, and AT THE GATES or main support for DARK TRANQUILLITY - to show for it. Additionally, NAILED TO OBSCURITY have also performed in front of thousands at festivals like Wacken Open Air, Party.San Metal Open Air, and Bloodstock Open Air. There are few metal artists that need no introduction, but Sweden's SOILWORK are definitely one of them. Their reputation as one of the country's finest exports (aside from herrings, Abba and porn) is well-deserved. Few bands have melded the aggressiveness of metal with genuinely catchy choruses to such impressive results. Before you start
name-dropping the latest metalcore sensation, let's just get one thing straight, SOILWORK - which is not a reference to cultivation, but to working their way up from the ground - have established a solid reputation alongside fellow countrymen like In Flames, Meshuggah & Arch Enemy as well as influencing bands such as US heavyweights Killswitch Engage. Surfacing in 1997 with a five-track demo,'In Dreams We Fall Into The Eternal Lake', SOILWORK formed as a quartet before expanding for their first full-length release. The eighth full-length album Ghost Reveries by Swedish heavy metal band Opeth is the epitome of what metal should be: a work of art. The album is filled with heavy, intricate, and precisely performed guitar riffs. You can't avoid the monstrous riffs in a song like 'The Grand Conjuration'. As the band's main composer, Mikael Åkerfeldt successfully managed to transfer his dark emotions into all those twisted solos, surrounded then by wall of even thicker riffs. He's blending classical clean harmonies with guttural growls. Opeth's technical capacity mark them out from both their followers and their peers and accordingly Ghost Reveries is definitely one of the greatest metal albums ever recorded. This album is a culmination of everything Opeth have worked toward throughout their career. It's fully realized, stunningly beautiful, and emotionally fragmented.

Both label and band have gone on some wonderful journeys during that time apart but both felt the stars were finally correctly realigned to renew their partnership in all things weird.
 
Long time AMT fans will immediately recognise some of the song titles listed on the album sleeve here. But the songs themselves have been reworked and transformed far away from their original versions. New boy Jyonson Tsu's quiet, almost whispered vocals bring a whole new aura to proceedings, despite the familiar riffs hidden in the depths below them. It's so laid back in places it's practically horizontal, with only occasional trademark piercing guitar squeals threatening to destroy the peace and calm. The whole of side two is taken up with the twenty minute epic 'Black Summer Song' .. and if this is an indicator to where the AMT mothership is heading going forwards we're all in for another fucked up and magical ride.

The inaugural release in Gotta Groove Records' OH Wax series is the 1985 album by Witch - entitled "Salem's Rise' - originally self-released through the Eargasm Productions label. The original pressing from 1985 has long been sold out and sought after by heavy metal collectors. Occasionally, a copy will pop up for sale online for several hundred dollars. GGR tracked down the original label's founder to re-release this long lost Ohio private pressing.

Notes from original executive producer and founder of Eargasm Records, Tim Grogean:

"Ted George and I were introduced in 1984 when he came to my studio in Dayton, Ohio asking me to produce a single for him. He was a shredding guitarist and songwriter from Versailles, Ohio. The first single release was 'Chained Heat' b/w 'Rock-N-Roll Dreams' — released on Eargasm Records in 1984. Ted handled all guitars, with Jon Menger on drums and Larry 'LD' Hampshire on keyboards.

After the completion of 'Chained Heat,' Ted yearned to write a full-length album; and I was looking for a project to present to larger record companies in LA and NY. Songwriting and rehearsals started in Versailles, Ohio with many nights jamming in the basement of brothers Tony and Dave Chappie. Tony (on drums) and Dave (on bass) were accompanied by Ted (on guitar), and Ace Mathews (on vocals). Pre-production was done at Eargasm studios, and into Audio Productions we went to record one hell of a heavy metal album.

Many of long nights and heavy parties ensued for the next month, as the band hammered out the ten songs on "Salem's Rise." The instruments fell in very solid with Ted's fast guitar work and solid rhythm section. Tim and Mike Niklas engineered the recording at Audio Productions. Tim was the executive producer as well, and assisted in songwriting and guitar. The album was Mastered at QCA in Cincinnati, Ohio (where it was also originally manufactured on vinyl). Tony Chappie and I wrote the drum solo; and incomparable pianist Larry 'LD' Hampshire again came to Ted's side for the keyboards. Yes, it is true; we pulled out all the stops in producing a dark heavy metal album. LD Hampshire provided awesome devilish backing tracks and backwards masking. Listen to 'Something Evil' for some great examples of this.

The album was released in 1985, with the release party held at Hara Arena in Dayton Ohio. I opened up as a solo act. The album sold out almost immediately, but the large record companies solicited at the time felt the tide was turning to new wave and big hair metal, away from the heavy metal sound of the late 70s. Unfortunately, no big record deal was inked.

Most of the musicians involved on Salem's Rise continue to play and record to this day. Ted went on to front many bands and work with other artists, including Rick Derringer. He is now known as 'Fast Eddie' due to his freakish speed on the guitar. The Chappie brothers eventually became businessmen. Less is known about the prospects of singer Ace Mathews. 'LD' continued to play in bands with Tim and record in Dayton-area studios. I went on to work with bands like Rush, Sponge, Days of the New, Sun; and I continue to record and tour in my band Amplified.'
