For the last 10 years or so the iconic blend of African folk, American jazz and funk, and percussive horn, drum and chant oriented music called Afro Beat has experienced a grand revival. Dozens of new bands worldwide consciously carrying the legacy of Fela Kuti into the new century. JariBu Afrobeat Arkestra is one of those new bands on the scene. Spiritually influenced by the great Fela Kuti, 'JariBu' which means 'Try' in Swahili, have created their own 'Neo Afrobeat' sound, interweaving traditional Afro Beat with funk and jazz sounds.

December 2010: The group 'Deep Jazz' is playing a concert at 'Studio 2' of the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation, this time in a new nonet formation. Leader and bassist Jerker Kluge wrote nine completely new compositions for the group, chose two classics of the genre for a new interpretation and arranged the material for the new exceptional and very special line-up.

On You Never Come Closer, an experimental track that was way ahead of its time, Janne Carlsson unleashes a fearsome sound on drums helped by Bernot Egerladh on organ.

Originally released on EMI Sweden in 1970, this was Doris’ lone solo album. A Swedish funk / psych / jazz rarity, it attracted little attention upon its initial release and seemed doomed to obscurity, but thanks to crate-digging DJs and a Mr Bongo 1996 reissue, it has since seen a new lease of life as a highly prized cult classic amongst record collectors.

The album presents a unique blend of pop, jazz, funk and soul, containing more than a hint of Joni Mitchell, Led Zeppelin and the like. ‘You Never Come Closer’ was sampled on ‘Closer’ by influential hip-hop producer Madlib for Quasimoto. This has led to Doris' work becoming increasingly popular amongst underground hip-hop fans.

‘Did You Give The World Some Love Today, Baby’ is more than just a curiosity, it’s an overlooked gem, showcasing a singer with a distinctive voice, great range and charm.

Hidden away in the North East of England, DJ Chris Tarn and double bass player Phil Smith discovered they shared a fondness for sampling long forgotten or never discovered dusty vinyl and decided to hook up
and bounce around a few ideas. These ideas took a life of their own as they started to work with other musicians and the sound of the band took on more of a live feel. The songs were passed around friends and ended up getting radio plays on Craig Charles' Funk & Soul Show (BBC 6 Music) and Pete Isaac's Jelly Jazz Show.

Vocalist Gary Walker (who recorded a couple of 45s for the Jin label in Lousiana and later teamed up with the Boogie Kings) should not be mistaken for the drummer Gary Walker (that came to some commercial success in the UK in the 1960s).
