Jimmy Whoo - Motel Music, Vol. 2

First DJ, then producer, Jimmy Whoo founded the collective and label Grande Ville Records with friends and collaborators. For 8 years he has been immersed in studios, producing for or with other members of his crew. A self-taught singer and producer, he composes and records almost everything solo. A fan of vintage gear, he composed the majority of Motel Music Part II with old keyboards, like a Korg Poly 800 II and a Yamaha DX7, throwbacks of the 80's brought into a contemporary form.

Having worked with the likes of Bonnie Banane and Lonely Band for Motel Music Part I, Whoo's new project reflects on his soul and jazz influences amongst modern electronic sounds, forming a sonic journey that weaves together dark, filmic moments with dreamlike visions and hanuting mirages of LA landscapes and Parisian nighttime glamour.

Wildcats, an upcoming single from his forthcoming Motel Music Part II, has been played frequently on BBC 6 with Tom Ravenscroft, Capital 1Xtra, and in France, on FIP, Radio Nova, Campus Radio and RFI. Jimmy recently hosted a full hour on France's Radio Nova, as label boss of Grande Ville Records.

Sublime private spiritual jazz-funk/fusion album, now hard to find. Finally available again, fully licensed and remastered, with original artwork.

Led by saxophonist DAOUD ABUBAKAR BALEWA who studied formal classical music and received instruction from Frank Mitchell (Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers) and Jackie McLean (Blue Note records), AMBIANCE incorporates Brazilian and Latin flavours with a righteous and soulful Afrocentric jazz edge.

This amazing and sought after LP beautifully starts with the haunting "The Clavicle" sampled by MF DOOM on the Special Herbs beat series and contains other gems like the so fresh call for celebration « Fiesta » composed by GATO BARBIERI, the insane spiritual jazz fusion track « Gida-Gida » and the killer modern soul cut There Is A Love' featuring the beautiful voice of SYREETA WRIGHT. This album is magnificent in its entirety, no fillers. Some of the best fusion on record!

« Influenced by the modal jazz of John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, McCoy Tyner and Rahsaan Roland Kirk, AMBIANCE was an excellent but little known post-bop group that was active in Los Angeles in the late 1970s and early 1980s. AMBIANCE reflected the spiritual outlook of its founder and leader DAOUD ABUBAKAR BALEWA, a saxophonist/flutist/clarinettist who also played African and Latin percussion and was heavily influenced by world music » (Allmusic.com).

Roger Raspail - Dalva 2x12"

For his second solo album in 20 years Roger Raspail, a true legend on percussions, wished to reunite all the musicians who he has had the chance of performing alongside and that have marked him. The result is this wonderful intersection of jazz, cadense and Gwo Ka.
With only two albums in a career lasting over forty years, the least one can say is that Roger Raspail takes his time - and great care - before he puts his vision of the world to music. A big drummer who has featured on hundreds of albums, the native of Guadeloupe is finally taking centre-stage. I had other priorities: meeting people, sharing things, exchanging.' Free jazz or Cap-Verdean morna, Caribbean swing and Congolese rumba, spiritual funk and trance from the Sahel, the guy from Guadeloupe is one of those backing musicians whose humility only serves to underscore and enrich his musicality. Caressing one minute, banging the next, his expert fingers know how to bring the best out of the skins. Drumming is in his genes. He's been linking and binding for decades, working on projects whose sheer variety says all there is to say about his open-mindedness and his ability to adapt. This is what this compilation is about: sounds that seem worlds apart, a jigsaw whose pieces, if assembled end to end, would tell a different story of our world. On this album he describes diversity at work, but behind that there's a sense of deep roots from which he draws his identity. Creolized', to paraphrase the West Indian essayist Édouard Glissant, for whom the poetry of any relationship is based on the presence' of all languages. This desire to encompass vast swathes of musical territory has never prevented him from tending to his own garden, to quote a different philosopher. Quite the opposite, in fact. Roger Raspail has never surrendered an ounce of originality, starting with the seven rhythms that go to make up gwo ka, the drum that is his island's hallmark.
Whatever happens, I'll always be a gwo ka, and that is a firm part of my roots, my genes and my blood. I can't help thinking, dreaming, eating and charming through and with gwo ka. This drum and this music have given me everything. The clear trade-off, though, is that my music sounds like gwo ka, whichever type of instrument I play. Gwo-ka, like jazz, reggae or any other form of musical resistance, is a philosophy of life.' Born in December 1953 in Capesterre Bel Easu, Roger Raspail grew up with that sound, the echo of the emancipation movements of the 1970s. After some early experience with his mentor Rudople Coppry, with whom he learned to make his own drum, Roger Raspail left the tropics to settle on the other side of the Atlantic. When I left Guadeloupe it was to listen and look at things further afield.' He turned pro in the mid 1970s and was a regular at the American Center, which sucked in experiences in free jazz from all corners. It was a time of awakening, followed by a dazzling array of appearances as a percussionist during the 1980s. It became difficult to keep track of his collaborations, although one particularly long-lasting one was with Cabe Verde Show. One could also cite the cult flautist Eugène Mona, the barefoot diva Cesaria Evora, the zen pianist Mal Waldron, and the brilliant guitarist Dominique Gaumont.
At the beginning of the new millennium, he recorded his first album for Marge. He then had to wait for almost twenty years, recording over two hundred records with others, before he was once again the leader. Dalva' is his beloved' granddaughter's name, and thus a natural successor to his first album, Fanny's Dream', which took its name from his daughter. It all sounds so obvious, because the repertoire shows off the many facets of a musician who has always brought his own spirit to his music. Bossa, calypso, rara, soul jazz, beguine, cadences... Composed over many years, this compilation of mostly new tracks is a perfect excuse to travel into the heart of the creole world, an opportunity for the MC to play with old friends, always in good company. All of them follow the same course through this archipelago of sound that surpasses any divisions between black and white, any clear boundaries, any fixed categories. This album is not about enclosing orthodoxy, it's about opening people's minds.
As proof of this, his accompanying musicians hail from a range of backgrounds, but they are all part of his family'. As the songs progress, we meet some of his old friends, and some he got to know more recently. Here again, there is no point in drawing up a full list, but it's worthwhile mentioning a few names. Jacob Desvarieux harks back to their many exchanges during the 1980s, and in particular to two albums by Kassav' led by Roger Raspail. The same goes for Patrice Caratini, a double bassist the percussionist met over thirty years ago - We had recorded an album at the Dréher with George Brown, Richard Raux, Mal Waldron and Roy Borwos' - and stayed in touch with throughout the 2000s. It's also the case of the quintessential pianist, Alain Jean-Marie, whom Roger Raspail heard paly in Guadeloupe before catching up with him in Paris at the famous concerts at Le Dunois with Dominique Gaumont, Alan Silva, Bobby Few and lots of other avant-garde jazz musicians...' Younger but no less close, the cellist Vincent Ségal was also part of this unblinkered musical family. Vincent happens to be Alain Jean-Marie's nephew. I met him at concerts and recording sessions with Morena, Alain's wife, and then we did a two-week tour of Guadeloupe. That cello-ka duet was one of my best experiences ever.'
There's also the London-based Trinidadian singer Anthony Joseph - the little brother from a big island near Guadeloupe' - whom he met in Parisian clubs before they truly collaborated on various albums, the latest of which was Kumaka', which bears Roger Raspail's imprint. But Raspail's most iconic collaborator is perhaps not the best known: It's a lovely story. Reda Samba was barely nine years old when I invited him to play on my first album, his father, Mokhtar Samba, was the drummer. Twenty years on, and the job's his!' How symbolic that this is a long-term affair, and that once all the tracks on this album have been assembled, they might just paint the most accurate self-portrait of its creator.

La Natura E L'uomo

Intervallo
31.01.2017

Third reissue (of seven planned) in the incredible series of nature-themed libraries originally released in the first half of the Seventies by Cardium, Chic, Nereide, Musical, Rhombus, Spring, and Weekend labels. Seven never-reissued-before albums, real hardcore collector items, which gave birth to a small cult during the last four decades.

"La natura e l'uomo" (Italian for "Nature and mankind") first came out in 1973, despite being part of the same series of "Biologia marina" and "Ittiologia" (earlier reissued by Intervallo), it is actually a different affair, in which the avant-garde urge partly leaves room for sweeter, acoustic atmospheres. But there are also amazing examples of ambient experimentations (like the ones of the previous volumes of the series) such as "Protozoi" or "Venus", both featured in two versions. The main characters of this release are pretty much the same ones we met in the other volumes - Alessandro Alessandroni, Franco Tamponi e Amedeo Tommasi - but "La natura e l'uomo" also introduces two new names. Marco Di Marco, author of the tracks with a more definite easy listening mood, is a pianist and a jazz composer from Bologna, while the alias Kema hides Alessandroni's wife, the amazingly talented Giulia De Muittis. She and her husband are responsible for the most enticing tracks of the album: "Bassa marea", "Pescatori" and "Venus".

Mickey Baker, also known as Mickey Guitar' Baker, was an American guitarist. He is widely held to be a critical force in the bridging of rhythm and blues and rock and roll, along with Bo Diddley, Ike Turner, and Chuck Berry. His musical style was influenced by saxophonist Charlie Parker.

In the 50s Baker did sessions with The Drifters, Ray Charles, Ruth Brown, Big Joe Turner, Louis Jordan and numerous other artists. During this time, Baker played on numerous hit records. As part of the pop duo Mickey & Sylvia, he had a hit single with Love Is Strange' in 1956.

In the late 50s Baker had the chance to show off his virtuosity on guitar on his first solo album, The Wildest Guitar. Originally released in 1959, the all-instrumental album also displayed his arranging talent and musical ideas. The music is a blend of both jazz and pop, backed by a solid beat that makes it both musically exciting and attention-getting.

In 2003, Mickey Baker was listed at #53 on Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time'.

Modern jazz has had from the start two main sources whence came most of the ideas. These two founts, as it were, of inspiration and of ideas are Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Indisputably they have enriched the lore of jazz throughout the world. They have taken what people have built before them, refashioned it in many ways, added to it, and have sent the jazz edi ce soaring for others to look up to, be inspired by, and, eventually, build upon. Most of the playing of Parker and Gillespie together was in the period 1944-46. At that time Gillespie had a small unit in which Parker was the featured soloist. Shortly after that period, they separated, each to go his own way. This album represents the rst get-together, in a sense, of the two since their separation. I took, as an ideal rhythm section, Thelonious Monk, who is a lesser light in modern jazz but, nevertheless, an important one: Curly Russel, an itinerant bassist, in the modern idiom, and Buddy Rich, a very swinging drummer. We made the sides contained in this album at a very happy date: and I think you will agree that Parker and Gillaspie are fresher and better than ever before, and axiomatically as they play, so does modern jazz grow'

The Hoodna Orchestra is a 12 members orchestra who studies and investigates the African origins of western popular music. The Orchestra formed in 2012 in the south side of Tel Aviv, by a group of musicians, and it functions as a collective and a record label.

Hoodna's musical director is The Guitarist and composer Ilan Smilan. The cultural and musical environment that surrounds the group has a great effect on its creative process. Exposure to Ethiopian', Eritrean and Arabic musical traditions, coupled with an ongoing study and exploration of different jazz styles, creates a unique blend which has made The Hoodna Orchestra one of the most appreciated and sought-after live shows in Israel.

YELBEN (from my heart in Amharic) is the new single from the Hoodna Orchestra and Tesfaye Negatu. It is a love song, reflects a painful longing for a love that is long gone.

The song was written by the Ethiopian poet and singer Demisu Belete and composed

by Ilan Smilan.

The B-side is the instrumental song BEZE ("on my side" in the ge'ez language).

Both songs recorded live in the Hoodna studio, on mostly analog equipment.

The songs convey a respectful nod to the glory days of Ethiopian jazz and pop in

Adis Abbeba, during the 60's and 70's.

The new single is the first in a series of collaborations between the Hoodna Orchestra and Ethiopian singers and musicians, both from Israel and Ethiopia.

Judee Sill was an American singer and songwriter. She released two albums and partially completed a third album before her death in 1979. Sill encountered Graham Nash and David Crosby and toured with them for a time as their opening act, a year before the release of her debut album. She was hired by the Turtles to write songs, on which a few of them appeared on her debut album, such as 'Lady-O'. Two of Sill's biggest influences were Bach and Ray Charles.

Judee Sill's eponymous debut album of the same name was originally released in late 1971. Backing musicians include John Beck and Jim Pons from the Leaves. The majority of the album was produced by Henry Lewy, noted for his work with Joni Mitchell throughout the 70s. Graham Nash handled the duties for the single 'Jesus Was a Cross Maker' with his production designed to aim for radio airplay before the release of the album. Judee Sill featured Sill's voice in multiple overdubs, often in a four-part chorale or fugue. The songs are delivered in an acoustic style on guitar and, for 'Jesus was a Cross Maker' and 'Enchanted Sky Machines,' on piano. The songs on the album feature elements of folk, country, and gospel, but also strong classical influences.

Jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd's critically acclaimed career and life have assured the Detroit native his rightful place as one of the most respected musicians of the 20th century. Having successfully transitioned to Jazz Fusion in the 1970s under the guidance of the Mizell brothers, creating four albums on Blue Note records including the highly influential Places and Spaces, Byrd continued to explore the fertile possibilities of Fusion with four more albums recorded for Elektra Records between 1978 and 1982. 1978s Thank You... For F.U.M.L (Funking Up My Life), 1979s Donald Byrd & 125th Street N.Y.C. , produced by Byrd, and the two Isaac Hayes produced albums Love Byrd and Words, Sounds, Colors and Shapes from 1981 and 1982 respectively are fully represented over a two-disc anthology package from BBR.

Tracks produced by Byrd include the up-tempo jazz-funk-disco tracks 'Thank You For Funking Up My Life,' 'Loving You,' 'Have You Heard The News,' 'Pretty Baby' and 'People Suppose To Be Free' alongside the deeper jazz-fusion cuts of 'Sunning In Your Loveshine,' 'Your Love Is My Ecstasy,' 'Gold The Moon, White The Sun' and 'Loving You,' which reached #74 on the Billboard R&B chart early in 1979.

The Isaac Hayes produced tracks include 'Love Has Come Around,' (Byrd's biggest R&B hit at #15), the dancefloor work outs 'Sexy Dancer,' (R&B #38) 'Star Trippin'' and 'I Love Your Love'. The rich Hayes' influenced ballads 'I Feel Like Loving You Today' and 'Falling' sit with the deeper jazz-fusion compositions 'Butterfly,' 'I'll Always Love You,' 'So Much In Love,' 'Forbidden Love' and 'Everyday.'

Big Break Records is proud to present Donald Byrd & 125th Street N.Y.C, Love Has Come Around: The Elektra Records Anthology 1978-1982. Featuring comprehensive liner notes and rare photos across a sixteen page booklet housed in a super-jewel CD case, Love Has Come Around is an essential addition to any Jazz Fusion, Funk, and Disco fan's collection.

Nat's singing was what ultimately brought him fame and fortune, it was almost exclusively as a pianist that he began his
career, and in this sphere he came to be regarded among the finest of the twentieth century. This magnificent collection
compiles some of his best songs, including "Nature Boy", "Mona Lisa" and "Too Young" among others.

Laurent De Schepper Trio - Into Olymp

After their furious debut "Aquanaut", Leipzig's LAURENT DE SCHEPPER TRIO release a mature follow up that sees the genre-blending jazz / indie formation heading for new peaks.

4 years have been passing since the LAURENT DE SCHEPPER TRIO (who actually became a quartet in the meantime) unleashed their highly praised debut album "Aquanaut": "great band" (De:Bug), "worth listening and important" (Wolf Kampmann / Eclipsed) or "stunning magnificence!" (Subjectivisten) were some of the opinions on the Leipzig-based formation whose sound blends fluidly the progressive now-jazz of NILS PETTER MOLVAER, TALK TALK's ethereal art-pop and the structural freedom of SONIC YOUTH. "Into Olymp" - the title as well as the artwork document an extended band trip to Greece in october 2015 - again turns out a corybantic stylistic balancing act, a brilliant symbiosis of jazz and indie, mature serenity and vital dynamics, sublime finesse and high energy. Complex arrangements, propelled by bass (ISABEL FISCHER) and drums (LARS OERTEL), are the backbone for the multi-faceted guitar play of new member RENE PALFFY and THOMAS BÄR's effect-modified saxophone. A truly monumental effort, recorded at Ballroom Studios / Dresden, produced by JOHANNES GERSTENGARBE and soundwise refined by REUBEN COHEN / LURSSEN MASTERING (CAT POWER, GEORGE HARRISON, IGGY POP, ELVIS COSTELLO, QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE) in Burbank, California.

Laurent De Schepper Trio:

Isabel Fischer - bass

Lars Oertel - drums

Thomas Bär - saxophone, guitar

Rene Palffy - guitar, samples

Guest musicians:

Paula Akinsinde - vocals

Alfred Haberkorn - tuba , trombone

Michal Tomaszewski - clarinet , thumb piano

Johannes Gerstengarbe - piano

Sun Ra: piano, John Gilmore: tenor sax, Marshall Allen: alto sax, Pat Patrick: baritone sax, Robert Cummings: baritone clarinet, Teddy Nance: trombone, Ali Hassan: trombone, Clifford Jarvis: drums, Ronnie Boykins: bass, tuba, James Jackson: log drum, flute, Carl Nimrod: sun horn, gong.

The 1965 sessions that produced the original two volumes of Heliocentric Worlds came during the most extremely free-form period of Ra's career, contemporaneous with The Magic City (Saturn Records). Volume 1, recorded in April with an 11-member band, consists of seven relatively short tracks (none over eight minutes), these tracks find Sun Ra breaking ground by using synthesizers and having the Arkestra musicians double on percussion. Recorded in November with an octet, Volume 2, in contrast, was much freer and featured the side-long "The Sun Myth" and the 15-minute "Cosmic Chaos." The horn players and legendary bassist Ronnie Boykins have plenty of room to stretch out and take full advantage. "A House of Beauty" offers five minutes of relatively lyrical respite between the other tracks. When ESP-Disk' resumed issuing new releases in 2005, Sun Ra archivist Michael D. Anderson resurrected another five tracks from the November session to create Volume 3, featuring the powerful "Intercosmosis."

"...the two Heliocentric Worlds albums, both recorded in 1965, appeared on the iconoclastic ESP-Disk label, and propagated his music to a wider audience of listeners who were open to freakiness. Both volumes are improvisations by subgroups of the Arkestra (directed by Ra), and even at their most dissonant, they're playful and spacious — 'Dancing in the Sun' is off-the-cuff big-band swing. 'The Sun Myth' is a panoramic 18-minute fantasia in which two or three instruments at a time toss long, buzzing tones and high honks back

In 1966 ESP-Disk' founder Bernard Stollman put together a multi-artist tour of five New York colleges and sent audio engineer David B. Jones on the road with it. When they returned, just 39 minutes of music was chosen to be released as the original Sun Ra LP Nothing Is... (ESP1045). Forty-four years later, Sun Ra archivist Michael D. Anderson pieced together some missing parts of the New York College Tour. Recorded on May 18th 1966 at St. Lawrence University in Potsdam, NY, this illuminating document represents the full 70-minute first set, from which Nothing Is... was taken. In addition, Anderson uncovered a partial second set from the same evening and some rare rehearsal footage recorded during a sound check before the concert. The over 90 minutes of additional material includes the rarely performed "State Street" and alternate versions of "Theme of the Stargazers" and "The Second Stop Is Jupiter." Remastered from the original tapes and presented in superb quality, College Tour Volume One is a vivid snapshot of the mid-Sixties Ra and his intergalactic band.

Various - Spiritual Jazz 7: Islam

Songs ancient and divine - the seventh volume of our acclaimed Spiritual Jazz series examines the influence and impact of Islam on four decades of jazz innovation.

Through Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali, the civil rights era in America saw African American liberation politics famously associated with Islamic belief. This was not the first time that radical developments in African American cultural life had been widely and famously associated with Islam - that distinction belongs not to political or sporting giants, but to the progressive jazz musicians of the bebop generation. Kenny Clarke, Art Blakey, Sahib Shihab, Gigi Gryce, Idrees Sulieman, Ahmad Jamal, Yusef Lateef, all these legendary jazz pioneers - and countless more - were early converts to the spiritually charged Ahmadiyya school of Islam.

Their faith profoundly influenced the music that they made, and the presence of prominent and innovative Muslim musicians at the heart of jazz culture in America has been recognised ever since. The tracks on this collection follow the story of Islam and jazz from the 1950s to the 1980s. Recorded by Muslim jazz musicians, they often draw specifically on

Middle Eastern or Islamic music, dream of an esoteric or spiritual Afro-East, or invoke the landscape and sound worlds of Islamic Africa. Spiritual Jazz 7 presents a selection of visionary music - inspired by faith, powered by jazz.

Mel Tormé, nicknamed The Velvet Fog, was an American musician best known as a singer of jazz standards. He was also a jazz composer and arranger, drummer, an actor in radio, film, and television, and the author of five books. He composed the music for The Christmas Song' ( Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire') and co-wrote the lyrics with Bob Wells.

Tormé made his movie debut in Frank Sinatra's first film, the musical Higher and Higher. His appearance in the 1947 film musical Good News made him a teen idol.

Paced by his only hit of the rock era, Comin' Home Baby! is a real crossover record, balancing a few groovy dance numbers (like the title track) with early-60s cool jazz versions of the standards Walkin',' Moanin',' and On Green Dolphin Street.'

Midori Takada - Through The Looking Glass

CD

Palto Flats & WRWTFWW Records are ecstatic to announce the highly-anticipated reissue of Japanese percussionist Midori Takada's sought after and timeless ambient / minimal album "Through The Looking Glass", originally released in 1983 by RCA Japan.

Considered a Holy Grail of Japanese music by many, "Through The Looking Glass" is Midori Takada's first solo endeavor, a captivating four-song suite capturing her deep quests into traditional African and Asian percussive language and exploring contemplative ambient sounds with an admirably precise use of marimba. The result is alternatively ethereal and vibrant, always precise and mesmerizing, and makes for an atmospheric masterpiece and an unparalleled sonic and spiritual experience.

The fully licensed reissue is available as a single 33rpm LP and a limited 45rpm DLP, both cut directly from the original studio reels (AAA), at Emil Berliner (formerly the in-house recording department of renowned classical record label Deutsche Grammophon) for the 45rpm DLP, and at the equally famous Frankfurter SST Studio for the LP. It is also available in CD format for the first time. All versions come with extensive liner notes.

Double 180 gram, half-speed vinyl re-release of the orchestral epic. Norwegian Grammy-nominated and critically acclaimed masterpiece «The Mechanical Fair» finally gets it's long awaited vinyl release

Jampacked with a wellspring of harmonic slingshots, pumping beats and melodic rollercoasters, critics called The Mechanical Fair «the best movie you'll never see» and drew comparisons to Igor Stravinsky's «The Rite of Spring» upon it's original release in 2014. It's apparent appeal to an surprisingly wide range of musical communities finally brought it right into DJ dance-wiz Todd Terje's hands. And make no mistake: the physicist hands doesn't settle for an iPad. It craves vinyl. His wholehearted endorsement led the captain of the Olsen Family to clear the rights, assemble his own killer remix and requisition Grammy-winning cutting engineer Matt Colton for a gorgeous double 180 gram, half-speed vinyl re-release of the orchestral epic.

Originally written for a quintet including heavily merited jazz cats Erik Nylander, Ole Morten Vågan, Petter Vågan and Even Helte Hermansen in 2013, The Mechanical Fair expanded at the initiative of the Trondheim Chamber Music Festival, growing bolder and more powerful with the addition of the adventurous and Grammy-winning chamber orchestra The Trondheim Soloists in 2014.

Having just spearheaded seven genre-blending shows in just six days as the «Artist in Residence» of this years prestigious Molde International Jazz Festival, the multi award-winning Norwegian violinist/multiinstrumentalist, composer and producer Ola Kvernberg (35) can look back at an already impressive recording- and performing career. The once 17 year old jazz manouche violin sensation quickly and impatiently moved beyond the jazz realm for inspiration - resulting in seven albums as a solo artist, eight feature films as a movie score composer and countless additional recordings as a sideman. His list of collaborators range from jazz legends Pat Metheny and Joshua Redman, via post/prog-rock act Motorpsycho, to collaborations with world renowned novelists Lars Saabye Christensen and Jo Nesbø. His fearless attitude and relentless drive towards the boundaries of genres has given him a well-earned high standing on the Scandinavian scene today.

Don't miss out on this rollercoasting, genre-twisting magnum opus as it finally hits is true potential on the Olsen label on November 11 this fall.

Released back in 1983, this modal to slightly free jazz outfit from California takes us on a journey back to the late 60s and very early 70s, into the spiritual realms of greats like John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, John McLaughlin and Miles Davis, among others. Only few contemporary sounds from the bass and keyboards tell you that this album is newer than expected. Listening to it with far over 30 years distance, it easily stands the test of time and even more turns out to be one of these mind bending gems with an ever pulsating flow of magic being transferred into music. With a lead guitar added this could do justice to everything the MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA had ever released, but there is no need for guitars when you have a piano player going crazy and a rhythm section that seems to dance the Saint Vitus dance with each other. Please get me right, this is utterly tight and well performed with each note and each beat sitting where they belong. There are shapes of melodies rather than lines as common with modal jazz. What Miles Davis started 24 years earlier culminates in a sheer musical eruption on this album, which hardly anybody will remember these days. The atmosphere of Hassan's Walk' is deep and enthralling. When the band reaches its starting point, again melody wise after a fantastic roller coaster ride in the sense of an explosive musical performance and relentless improvisations you will fall on your knees. Exhausted but happy. And there is more to experience here. Souljazz of the light-footed yet highly energetic kind, and bits and pieces you can relate to Latin music meet each other on this battlefield of sounds and melodies. I cannot help but I feel totally hypnotized. For all aficionados of at least a bit far out jazz music this is exactly what you need.

A bona-fide Nigerian prince and probably the only musician to have ever played with Fela Kuti, Miles Davis and Bob Marley, Eji Oyewole combined African Highlife with western jazz to create a hybrid so that was as smooth as it was funky. His first album, Charity Begins At Home was an angry tirade against corruption in Nigeria. Me & You is his 'relationship' album, a brighter and happier set of songs that sees Eji all loved up, presumably with the mysterious 'Cameleon' featured on the cover. Eji's flute is no longer a strident voice raised in anger. Instead, on 'Me & You' and 'I'm a Dancer' it is a playful line of seduction. On the wonky and woozy 'Eniafelamo' his sax is a post-coital salutation. Even the one political track, 'Long Live Nigeria', is a loved up call for peace, progress and trust. Chilled, assured and dexterious, Me & You is a sophisticated showcase of Eji Oyewole's chops. 'This is the beginning of an atomic musical evolution,' he declares on the cover. 'Brothers and sisters, stay cool.' - Peter Moore.

However, his label declined to proceed, leading to protracted legal hassles. Spy vs Spy: The Music of Ornette Coleman is the 1989 album by American composer and saxophonist/multi- instrumentalist John Zorn, featuring the compositions of Ornette Coleman performed in the brief intense style of Zorn's hardcore miniatures.

The liner notes thank Ornette and Denardo Coleman, Mick Harris of Napalm Death, Ted Epstein of Blind Idiot God, Pil of Lip Cream (a Japanese thrash core group), The Accused, Craig Flanagan, DRI, CBGB, and the New York-London- Tokyo Hardcore Triangle'.

The outstanding cover artwork was created by indie comics personality Mark Beyer (of Amy and Jordan fame). The album itself approaches free jazz from the perspective of hardcore punk, particularly taking note of the contemporary innovations of thrash core and grind core. Zorn would later pursue these preoccupations in the thrash jazz group Naked City.

The album was included in the book 1001 Albums You Must
Hear Before You Die.

Tape / Cassette

* Kebko Music is Tokyo-based Akiko Kiyama's independent music label focusing on releasing avant-garde music which is not bounded by any specific genres but embraces the whole range of techno, experimental music, field- & live-recordings and classical music. The label owner established her name by Richie Hawtin featuring her track in his well-known DE9 Transitions mix in 2005. Since then, her music style has gradually changed to explore the edge of electronic music. The core of the label is based on small handcrafted editions of cassette tapes. It aims to give a chance for all of artists and listeners to explore their musical experience and creativity.

* Akiko Kiyama was born in Tokyo, Japan. Since her youth, she was surrounded by classic music education and had been playing piano for 20 years. Her music career has started since 2004 since her debut EP "Dimension" on Sud Electronic(London) which got great supports from renowned DJ & Musicians like Mad Mike, Richie Hawtin , Sven Vath, Ricardo Villalobos. And in November 2005, her track " Like Ancient" has been licensed by M-NUS records ,and is appeared on DE9 Transitions by Richie Hawtin. In 2007, She moved to Berlin to follow through with her commitment to dance music and to develop her style further. She also released several singles on reputable labels such as Contexterrior, Lick My Deck, etc and her first album "7years" came out on District of Corruption under Kompakt. Since then she has been playing in Europe, North & South America and Japan widely, including her main acts at Fabric London and Panorama bar Berlin.

* This is Akiko Kiyama's 4th full-length album, stemming from two years of exploration outside her established dance floor inclinations, boiling down her sound to its essential organic grooves, intricate harmonies and eery atmospheres. The nature of her organic grooves lies within inter-sound gaps, carefully crafted to lead the listener through time distortions and into an hypnotic solitary world where music is breathed, not played. A sound imprinted of a definitely human character and vigor, yet sometimes ambiguous, fleeting, and capricious. From her peculiar sense of harmony and rhythm, and a meticulous minimal approach to composition, emerges rich lyrical lines forming a unique musical universe that few has had the chance to hear yet.

Bill Dixon Orchestra - Intents And Purposes

After spending the early '60s playing in groups with Cecil Taylor and Archie Shepp, trumpeter Bill Dixon recorded his singular and visionary masterpiece in 1967. Intents And Purposes remains not only Dixon's defining statement as a composer, but also one of the most luminous moments in the history of avant-garde jazz.

Combining orchestral timbres with free jazz intensity, Dixon leads a ten-piece ensemble including such heavyweights as Byard Lancaster, Robin Kenyatta, Jimmy Garrison and Reggie Workman. Closing each side of the album, "Nightfall Pieces I" and "Nightfall Pieces II" are evocative duets featuring Dixon's flugelhorn accompanied by flautist George Marge.

With Intents And Purposes, Dixon creates a work focused as much on sculpting and defining space - emphasizing moments of resonant stillness around which the compositions thrum and swell - as on purity of expression.

"One of the richest and most compelling LPs to taunt and tempt listeners into a life of freakdom." - John Corbett

This first-time vinyl reissue is recommended for fans of The Art Ensemble of Chicago, Anthony Braxton and Henry Cow.

The only album by Brazilian Octopus is a wonderful mix of bossa nova, pop, Cuban rhythms, jazz and all kinds of cool sounds and vibes that transcends any possible category. Among several top musicians, the band features Hermeto Pascoal, Cido Bianchi (former Milton Banana Trio member) and Lanny Gordin. Presented in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180g vinyl. This is such a unique album. Each tune is a winner, no wonder originals have fetched exorbitant prices in the collectors market, and it has been hailed by connoisseurs such as Nicola Conte or Andy Votel over the years.
It features Hermeto Pascoal, Cido Bianchi (former Milton Banana Trio member), Lanny Gordin and shows an unusual mix of different styles and influences that transcends any possible category: from pop to Cuban rhythms. The bossa nova is obviously also present, as in many other Brazilian recordings from 1969, but the complex arrangements make this record lean towards the jazzier side of things while the organ/guitar/vibes sounds will also be appealing for garage music lovers.
Brazilian Octopus was formed in 1968 after Livio Rangan, a wealthy businessman from Sao Paulo, asked Cido Bianchi to put together a band that would play at the shows run by his fashion company, Rhodia. A proper work contract was issued, including three months of paid rehearsals. Despite their diverse background, most of the members of the band already knew each other as they would often perform at Stardust, a popular club managed by Lanny's father. Hermeto Pascoal and Nilson da Matta joined the band a few months later. Then Mr Rangan approached the band again with a new idea: the recording of a full album mixing tunes written by other artists and their own compositions. The record was released by Fermata in 1969 and the band was then tempted with the idea of recording a second album. However, the offer was declined since the musicians had not received any fee for their work. That was the end of Brazilian Octopus.
Nearly five decades after its first release, with original copies having almost vanished off the face of Earth, now is the time for making this beauty available again

When Jimmy Scott died in 2014, dozens of musicians, hundreds of journalists and thousands of fans mourned the passing of a jazz legend. Not only had a link back to the era of Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker and Lionel Hampton been lost, but so had the chance to bring the fame and respect denied to him throughout his long and rich life. Now, as if sent from some righteous deity, comes "I Go Back Home", an album full of life recorded by Jimmy Scott years before his death. Created by German producer Ralf Kemper, Jimmy Scott and with mixes produced by Phil Ramone, no expense was spared in giving Scott the lushest musical backdrops possible, creating an album that, like Scott's inimitable vocal style, comes late but but right on time.

This is Jimmy Scotts very last album!
Many of the most talented musicians of the worldwide jazz scene are paying tribute to him on this album: Dee Dee Bridewater, James Moody, Kenny Barron, Peter Erskine, Arturo Sandoval, Joey DeFrancesco, Monica Mancini, Till Brönner, Oscar Castro Neves, Bob Mintzer, John Pisano, Renee Olstead, Gregorie Maret, the legendary HBR Studio Symphony Orchestra are guests and even the actor Joe Pesci got two songs with Jimmy Scott.
Mixes produced by Phil Ramone
