Camizole - Camizole + Lard Free

The ranks of Camizole included some of the most essential personalities of the French underground, notably Dominique Grimaud (Vidéo-Aventures), Chris Chanet (Etron Fou Leloublan) and Bernard Filipetti (Art & Technique). Their idea of music, if we look further than the pair Dominique Grimaud - Bernard Filipetti and a style of music influenced by Klaus Schulze, is inspired by the liberty of free jazz. This is nonetheless modified by a cathartic approach close to the esthetic preoccupations of Julian Beckand Judith Malina's Living Theatre. The result is a musical happening, where the important thing is to improvise in the urgency of the moment in front of a not-always receptive public.

Before exploring constructed repetitive forms which would be perfected by Urban Sax, Lard Free were more in the domain of noise improvisation, or even a kind of jazz rock similar to that of Soft Machine, as can be heard on a late retrospective album, from which the track "À chacun son Boulez" emerged.

There was logically great complicity between Camizole and Lard Free, which would lead to the two groups finally merging. This was the case for four concerts in May before the two groups disbanded in order to finally get to grips with the free rock in the style of Faust that they liked so much. As an ode to anarchy, a record now bears witness to those communal experiences.

21.11.2018

Limited Edition White with Red vinyl w/DL
For fans of Electronic / Jazz hybrids like: Anenon, Arve Henriksen and RinneRadio

Transformation is the debut album from Parisian multi-instrumentalist Axel Rigaud.
Rigaud's style as a whole is the exploration of the crossroads of electronic music and jazz. By blending steady big bottomed analog synth arpeggios, shuffling beats, and swirling jazz influ- enced reed instruments Rigaud makes the juxtaposi-tionional a compelling and interwoven whole.
Only a few moments on the album does one genre eclipse the other. Even when this happens one finds that the sax or flute are being electronically manipulated or the elec- tronics have that all to special swing.
While seemingly new ground for n5MD Miles, Coltrane and Weather Report are often in the rotation at n5HQ. So it makes perfect sense that Rigaud has found a home for his debut on n5MD.

23.11.2018

Like his double bass, Henri Texier is a pillar, a landmark in jazz and music in
general. After an early career at the end of the 1960s, along with American
bebop giants such as Bud Powell, Donald Byrd, Dexter Gordon and Kenny Clarke,
Henri Texier stands out for his originality at the forefront of world music
well before the term.
The proof is in his first two recordings made on the label 'JMS' - Amir (1975)
and Varech (1977) reissued here to satisfy requests coming from the four the
likes of Bonobo, Chinese Man, Be Svendsen and many others.
Amir, Le Piroguier, Les "là-bas", l'Elephant, Quand le Blues s'en ira and many
more of his songs are considered today to be true classics.
Reissued by JMS, France. Distributed by Mr Bongo.

Andrzej Korzynski - Possession - OST

As our maiden voyage into an expansive vat of unreleased music by Polish composer Andrzej Korzynski, Finders Keepers Records presents his previously unreleased electro/orchestral/experimental score for Andrzej Zulawski's surrealist 80s horror classic, Possession. These 25 cues were written and recorded exclusively for the 1981 award-winning film starring Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neil, but due to the progressive, stark and modernist nature of the finished film less than half of them made it on to the actual director's cut - leaving many of the tracks on this spackage totally unheard outside of Korzynski's studio.

The intended Possession score in its entirety marks an important axis in Korzynski's career where his various musical disciplines overlap. In one respect it marks his first forays into to synth driven electronics and disco drum machines, while other tracks epitomise the well honed techniques used in previous Zulawski scores, such as Third Part Of The Night and The Devil, which rely on his inimitable orchestral arrangements and combination of clavinet, Rhodes, piano and electric guitar.

This is the first time any of this music has been released outside of the films original context and is packaged on CD, 12" vinyl and conceptual green compact cassettes housed in miniature clamshell cases reminiscent of the films original VHS release that briefly adorned UK video shops in the early 1980s (before being banned by over excited censors as one of the unproscecuted 'video nasties' in the infamous 1983 tape cull). The important restoration of Korzynski's music aims to shed new light on the seldom manufactured productions of the composer whose vast cinematic catalogue warrants overdue global status alongside other golden era Eastern European composers such as Kryzstof Komeda, Jan Hammer and Zdenek Liska - not to mention the best of the French and Italian soundtrackers, such as Roubaix, Vannier and Nicolai.

Duplicated and carefully remastered directly from Korzynski's original master tapes this album boasts the uninhibited studio experiments and retains the pre-cut ambience.

Test Pressings II

12inchMUSCUT10
MUSCUT
21.11.2018

Ukrainian label Muscut celebrates its anniversary - Muscut X (10) Test Pressign II - is the tenth record in a row. The first release was published in 2012 on 7 inches and was called simply Test Pressing. Like six years ago, the current vinyl is a compilation of Muscut's 'residents', as well as new friends of the label. Test Pressing II is 12 inches on which there are exactly ten tracks. Both sides are significantly different in color of mood. Party A starts with dub-drone sketches of key figures of the Odessa underground - Wildstyle Crew and Bryozone. Then we hear the mantra-like M2 - the work of the creative union of Nicola Ratti, Mads Emil Nielsen together with Nikolaenko. The Canadian sound-artist Mark Templeton continues the line of rhythmic textures crowned with unhurried percussion - it is in all senses of Soft Education at number four. The first part is completed by an exquisite curtsy from the Andrew Pekler label frequenter called Underwater Nocturne as a soundtrack for the perfect tea ceremony.

The second side confidently sets a completely different compilation rhythm from the very start - the tribal tribal dance from the Berlin project Native Instrument instantly introduces into a trance. It is followed by a warm, enveloping minimal synth track from the Ukrainian trio Nisantashi Primary School. The middle of the second side is decorated with the pensive house-ballad of St. Petersburg producer Fadeev known as AEM Rhythm Cascade. Another Russian settled next to him - Muscovite Oleg Buyanov, aka OL, with a massive broken dub Nutmeg. The final composition consists of burning afrosint motifs from luminary Odessan Vakula.

Jon Lucien - Lady Love / Love Everlasting

The infamously velvet tones of Jon Lucien get a much welcomed official remastered, reissue - with the original 'Rashida' 7' e.p., that contained four of Lucien's tracks, now split into two 7's for a louder, more refined pressing of each song.

First up, 'Lady Love', with it's bossa nova inspired style, drawing every last drop of emotion from Lucien's infamously voluptuous voice. Once dubbed by Herbie Hancock as 'the man with the golden throat', it's easy to see why - Lucien's rich baritone evoking dreams of summer sunsets, glistening blue seas whilst wrapping you up in a blanket of warmth and tenderness that few can rival.

On the B side - 'Love Everlasting', another of Jon Lucien's bossa nova leaning tracks, swells with jazz flutes, plucked acoustic guitars and a soul drenched string section to compliment Lucien's beautifully calming tones.

With the original Rashida 7' exchanging hands for over £150 on Discogs, here's a chance to get Jon Lucien's golden-throated voice in the collection without raiding the savings.

STRUT
26.11.2024

Strut proudly present the brand-new studio album from Nubiyan Twist, 'Jungle Run'.

Now one of the leading lights in the UK's new generation of soulful, genre-fluid artists, the Leeds-born and now London-based 12-piece collective have created their finest recordings to date, effortlessly weaving together elements of jazz, soul, hip hop, African styles, Latin, dub, hip hop and electronics in a flow of thought-provoking and life-affirming music.

Recorded at the band's own self-built Henwood Studio in rural Oxfordshire, the album effortlessly moves through different voices from the band's circle. The inimitable, timeless vocals of Nubiya Brandon lead the way on the album's title track about breaking preconceptions and promoting equality, 'Where you from I'm from wherever I be.' Saxophonist Nick Richards vocals the killer first single from the album about inner turmoil and a search for the truth, 'Tell It To Me Slowly' while rising Ghanaian star K.O.G. appears on the Afro jams 'Basa Basa' and 'They Talk'. Percussionist Pilo Adami (Nina Miranda / Afrosamba) voices the infectious bossa-jazz jam 'Borders'. The band also draft in two African legends for guest duties with the original Afrobeat maestro Tony Allen on 'Ghosts' and Ethio jazz pioneer Mulatu Astatke contributing vibes on the sinuous 'Addis To London'. 'The depth of talent and ideas that every member of this group has brought to the table for this album is incredible,'

says producer and orchestrator Tom Excell. 'Conceptually, 'Jungle Run' is all about connecting different people and cultures whilst exploring the journey of individuals. This album is the pinnacle of everything we have done to date and to collaborate with the godfathers of Afrobeat and Ethio Jazz and celebrate their music in a modern context was very humbling.'

The album is another landmark for a band that has been consistently developing their sound since their formation in 2015 at Leeds College Of Music. 'One of the biggest factors in our sound was the exciting music scene in Leeds,' explains saxman Joe Henwood. 'From a reggae night called 'Sub Dub' to venues playing whacked out experimental jazz.' Since then, the band's self-titled debut album (2015), EP 'Siren Song' (2016) and single 'Dance Inna London' (2017) have become classics in their own right and their live show has become an essential ticket; previous live highlights have included high profile slots at David Byrne's Meltdown at the South Bank and Glastonbury West Holts

'Jungle Run' is released on 15th February on CD, 2LP and digital. Cover artwork comes from acclaimed designer Marcus Davies and the album is mastered by The Carvery. Nubiyan Twist tour across Europe from November.

Onom Agemo & The Disco Jumpers - Magic Polaroid

Ever since Onom Agemo & The Disco Jumpers broke the dreaded curse of the difficult second album by releasing "Liquid Love", a cocktail so spicy and delectable that it could warm the cockles of the grumpiest man alive's heart, even in the most Arctic conditions, everybody wondered how the Onom crew could top that one. But now you have an opportunity to whip out your "Magic Polaroid" as proof that this wasn't an impossible Project. Never before has the band so successfully captured their full-on live sound as they do here, thanks to three days of recording frenzy at Daniel Nentwig and Sebastian Maschat's Butterama studio, a haven of analog hardware hidden in a remote part of Berlin's Neukölln district. The exploding kaleidoscope of styles that make up this album, perfectly reflected by the stunning cover artwork from Nick Henderson and photography by Christoph Rothmeier, means that they can no longer be confined to their early description as an "Afro-Funk Quintet" or merely described as a lively tribute to the artists which have influenced them: their sound is 100 per cent pure uncut Onom Agemo, even though every track feels like a new beginning. The presence of a charismatic in-house vocalist who brought her own lyrics along has also boosted their confidence considerably and provided a further knock-out punch to their onstage performances.
And no one will be disappointed as soon as the first bars of "The Trumpets Of Denmark" stomp on stage like a boisterous fanfare, with Johannes Schleiermacher's impressive wall of sound production making the musicians sound like a much bigger band than what their line-up suggests (with Maria Schneider from Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra adding some extra percussive clout) and just the right amount of dizzying cross-rhythms to steer it away from potential bombast. When Onom Agemo's powerhouse vocalist Natalie Greffel starts chanting what at first sounds like a string of Onomatopoeia, it soon becomes clear that she's laying down her manifesto for a nostalgic Space-Age yet to come, with a few key words serving as Mantra (Focus, patience, tears and creation): an invitation to drive off the Information Superhighway and its endless litany of polite noises, to redirect our gaze inside ourselves and learn to understand and sometimes question how others perceive us.

Harvey Sutherland - Amethyst EP

Harvey Sutherland returns today with new single 'Amethyst', a jazz-leaning broken beat odyssey born out of sessions with London-based saxophonist Nubya Garcia and drummer Kahlil Memphis. Harvey Sutherland has also been confirmed to open for Little Dragon at Printworks this November, in addition to lining up an intimate headline show of his own at X on X. 'Amethyst' is the first half of a double-A-side single; along with the second track to follow soon, it will be released on a limited edition 12-inch vinyl later this year.

'Amethyst' is the next step in an already-unpredictable career from Harvey Sutherland, a producer, DJ and funk synthesist from Melbourne. After steadily making a name for himself amongst Australia's bubbling electronic underground, Mike Katz began to make international waves in 2013 with a series of successful 12' records under his nom de plume. Blending a broad array of crate-digging influences, his initial EPs have already been championed by international tastemakers like Gilles Peterson, Jamie xx, Disclosure, The Black Madonna and Pete Tong. Sold-out shows with his impeccable live band followed around the world - including Glastonbury Festival, London's Jazz Cafe and Corsica Studios - alongside some unique side-projects: Harvey recently performed an original cinematic disco suite alongside the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, as well as directing an east coast Australian tour with an 11-piece band in support of New York disco icon Leroy Burgess.

From the time Harvey Sutherland began making music, he was influenced by dance music, but not comfortable inside its rules. Still rooted in soul, disco and funk, the modern techno universe was not exactly where he fit - and so (as he continues to today on 'Amethyst') Harvey instead sought to create a world of his own. 'Looking for songs in strange places', as he says, but in ways only Harvey Sutherland knows how to look.

Part one of this exploration proved to be 'Amethyst', a transcontinental collaboration with two musicians also at the peak of their scene: London-based saxophonist Nubya Garcia and drummer Kahlil Memphis. Garcia has earned acclaim for her expressive style of playing, which has afrobeat, hip-hop and grime influences seeped into its bones rather than worn like a badge. Memphis, meanwhile, glides through complex rhytms with ease, their edges roughened up by a sensibility lifted from London's pirate radio, around which Harvey Sutherland's cosmic synths and strings orbit.

'I wanted something that had a jazz feel and lightness that was still really informed by the London broken beat scene,' says Mike now. That it's jazz is secondary - what's exciting for Katz is exploring the 'exciting, ephemeral' sensation of 'interplay, the sound of people playing together.' And whilst 'Amethyst' might signal a more experimental evolution in Harvey Sutherland's sound, you also sense his desire to bring players, sounds and global scenes together into something exciting and new is only just getting started.

A Day at United. The name practically says it all. An album recorded in a single day. No rehearsals. No second takes. Just Mocky and friends. Some instruments. Some songs Mocky sketched in the week leading up. Oh yeah, and a recording studio. United Recording, in fact. The legendary independent studio, financed by Sinatra among others. A refuge for artists seeking more control. Or maybe 'less interference' is a better way to put it. Because this is not an album about control. It's about putting certain conditions in place — creative limitations, even — then letting go. Letting the magic happen. Letting the human happen. In an age of computer-led precision, this is an album about the struggle for imperfection.

Tenderlonius - The Shakedown ft the 22Archestra

dream team of top talent he named the 22archestra, who he leads seamlessly throughout. Listeners are exposed to the full breadth of Cawthorne's technical and compositional skills, ranging from subtly meandering jazz, to hip hop, Afrobeat, Latin and exhilarating free form jazz.
The groups includes former Yussef Kamaal member Yussef Dayes on drums, Ruby Rushton bassist Fergus Ireland and producers Reginald Omas Mamode IV and Jeen Bassa on percussion.
The tracks include SV Disco', a nod to the mighty Slum Village, is a chunk of sensually-contorted disco vibes that brings on full party mode instantaneously, with the slinky bass licks and pitch-bent synthesiser recalling Roy Ayres's blissed-out funk.

'Maria' showcases Ed's roots as sample-based producer, pulling influence from around the globe to create an undulating piece of flute-led Brazilian fusion that fans of Ruby Rushton will find familiar. The eastern-inspired embellishments raise the temperature further, whilst former Yussef Kamaal member Yussef Dayes' sizzling cymbals and shuffling snare work propel the track forwards, locking down a signature 22a groove.

'Yussef's Groove' kicks off with driving drums, and each of the 22archestra enter steadily, fully utilising their virtuosic power, switching between low-slung bass, chic open piano solos and hazy electric piano.
The 22archestra was conceived after Tenderlonious was invited to record at Abbey Road Studios. The whole crew was rounded-up and the album was recorded during a single 8 hour session - a testament to their musicianship and ability to nail a take.
Personnel: Ed 'Tenderlonious' Cawthorne (flute & synth), Hamish Balfour (keys), Fergus Ireland (bass), Yussef Dayes (drums), Reginald Omas Mamode IV, Jeen Bassa, Konrad (percussion)

Kerbside Collection - Smoke Signals

Jazz funk and gritty rare grooves ensemble from down under - Kerbside Collection - return with their third record "Smoke Signals"! Continuing in a down home, instrumental approach, but this time crafting newer ideas and flavours into their spectrum of warm, analogue, dusty grooves from much more Fender Rhodes electric jazz elements, to New Orleans sprinklings alongside their 60's inspired West Coast style.

"Smoke Signals" continues the wilder tones, textures and 'library' sounds of extra instrumentation found on their last output "Trash or Treasure", whilst introducing hints of fusion and cinematic analogue electric colours into the mix bringing things into early 70s territory. Opening with the lush, analogue synth and keys palate of "Waiting Game", reminiscent of some classic Air "Moon Safari" grooves, before the album properly begins with a fresh rendition of the Rhodes heavy Cedar Walton 70's jazz funk classic "Jacob's Ladder".

Then straight into the street-styled jazz bongo breaks and funky flute of "Traffic", a skankin' New Orleans reggae homage to one of its finest Creole dishes, featuring funky Hammond organ courtesy of guest Jake Mason (Cookin' on 3 Burners) and tasty piano work from multi instrumentalist Andrew Fincher who handles both guitar and keys on the whole record.

The middle of the record comes with a steaming afro funk workout, and a low slung N'awlins styled blues 'n' soul groove, both featuring the fruity, low-end brass action of Papa Jo on the big baritone sax, before taking a gentle emotional breather with a delightful, soft, soulful, Rhodes ballad, and a 'waltz-jazz-wig-out' attributed to their label's A&R Mr Mellow (reminiscent of some humorous UK acid jazz à la Corduroy and James Taylor Quartet) featuring some beautiful jazzy Flugelhorn, and acoustic double bass.

The album wraps up with another cover - a grittier reinterpretation and arrangement of a Bob James 80s jazz funk classic "Westchester Lady" complete with funky flute and soaring guitar solo, before finishing with the explosive rock funk workout and title track "Smoke Signals", rounding out a record with a full spectrum of handmade jazz funk, reggae, soul, library and gritty rare grooves all recorded to tape machine.

Mica Levi & Eliza McCarthy - Slow Dark Green Murky Waterfall

Mica Levi returns to Slip with six piano pieces played by Eliza McCarthy in 'Slow Dark Green Murky Waterfall' - a crepuscular suite riddled with Mica's inquisitive, conversational phrasing and
smartly expanding upon their 7' track, 'Riding Through Drinking Harpo Dine' (Foom, 2017), a new recording of which also appears in this set
The culmination of three years work between Mica and Eliza - winner of the 2013 British Contemporary Piano Competition - 'Slow Dark Green Murky Waterfall' follows up their collaboration on the Oscar-nominated score for Pablo Larrain's 'Jackie' score with a finer-shaded, patient space for low-lit, smoky expression that's so intimate and personal it almost feels like eavesdropping a private recording.Ineffably bound by a sense of unreal poise, Eliza's interpretations are subtly, dynamically rendered in-the-mix by Mica to present the pieces as though in flux, like poignant, unresolved statements that occur in the flow of quiet, intent dialogue and linger in the air. It's testament to the pair's well-honed intuition that the results connote this feeling so naturally.
And it's maybe our familiarity with Mica's work, from her earliest chopped 'n screwed orchestrations, to her 'Under The Skin' score and her mutant pop pieces, that we keep expecting
hers or Tirzah's voice to match her melodies with wordless vocals or harmonious limns throughout the six pieces. That's probably simply down to the fact that Mica writes with such a pop-wise appeal and soulful sensitivity that it prompts subvocalisation in every listener, or maybe it's just us, but either way the hook of these instrumentals will be floating your head for days, weeks, or a lifetime after they're imbibed...

Neue Grafik - I Miss Something / Bed Stuy's Mood

Following on from the three highly-acclaimed CoOp Presents 'Selectors Assemble' compilation EPs from the past year, it's now time to focus on some of the individual talents from the ever-evolving movement. As the international foundation grows, we invite aboard the extremely talented Neue Grafik into the fold.

French producer, instrumentalist and DJ, Neue Grafik, has been building a strong rep for himself over the past few years, releasing records previously on labels such as Rhythm Section, 22a and Wolf Music. His sound is a hybrid of jazz, house, broken beat and hip hop, all with his unique geographical flavours of African ethnicity, Parisian roots and a love for London thrown into the mix.

So to the music - two brand new tracks, 'I Miss Something' and 'Bed Stuy's Mood', complete with remixes from EVM128, Danvers, Xtra Bruk and NameBrandSound (aka label bosses IG Culture & Alex Phountzi) respectively, making this one essential package for the bruk soldiers and beyond.

In Neue Grafik's words...

"I remember the first time I was at a CoOp party and met IG - I just said something like "unbelievable party, well done! Thank you, man". I didn't expect to be a part of this brilliant family a few months after that; it's totally insane to think about it now.

I began to hang properly with the CoOp fam during a DJ session at The Flex in East London. I was so happy to live in this moment; surrounded by these talented performers, artists and producers, excitedly talking about unreleased music on everyone's USB sticks.

This EP is a personal vision of the broken beat scene and my love for that. A meeting with artists who build my own taste, with friends keeping the same vibrancy and desire for this music. 'I Miss Something' and 'Bed Stuy's Mood' are two tracks dedicated to Porte Des Lilas (Paris), and Bedford-Stuyvesant (New York). One was made in my house, the other on holiday. These two tracks, as well as the remixes from the Selectors Assemble crew, represent a real and deep friendship."

More essential music from the CoOp Presents camp, available on limited vinyl and all digital services. Don't sleep.

Dijf Sanders - Moonlit Planetarium

Moonlit Planetarium is the 4th album of producer Dijf Sanders, who recently released 'Java' on De WERF.

Exotic, warm and organic rhythm 'n' tunes tell stories of far-away places and distant foreign memories. With Natham Daems (Black Flower) and Jon Birdsong (Beck, Calexico) to back him up on Eastern flutes, sax and horns. This is a classic electronica album that stayed under the radar for too long.

With Tracks like 'Snead' which delve into their Eitho Jazz inspirations, and 'Professional', going down a spicier Exotic journey, you won't be disappointed with this little teenage sojourn.

Play Jazz

ROOK001
06.11.2018

The Rookies were born in the spring of 2014 on the forgotten end of Brunswick Street in a room full of sweat, beer and dimlights at The Rooks Return. What started as a quiet set of background jazz for punters while they imbibed their cocktails quickly devolved into an uninhibited, drunken dance party reminiscent of a time almost forgotten... The Rookies are Jazz, but not like you know it.

Charles Mingus - Jazz in Detroit / Strata Concert Gallery / 46 Selden

'I'm trying to play the truth of what I am. The reason it's difficult is because I'm changing all the time.' Charles Mingus The radical discovery by Amir Abdullah of 5 two-track master tapes in the care of Hermine Brooks - widow of innovative Detroit drummer Roy Brooks - of the Charles Mingus Quintet recorded live in Detroit at Strata Concert Gallery is cause for some serious celebration. These electrifying recordings took place during Mingus' week-long residency in February 1973. They were broadcast live by drummer/producer and broadcaster Robert 'Bud' Spangler for WDET FM - a public radio station dedicated to jazz - from Kenny and Barbara Cox's multi-purpose home for Strata Records at 46 Seldon. Entrance to the gig was $5 dollars in advance and $6 on the door. By the early Seventies Mingus' militant musings, volatile character and hugely innovative musical offerings had already earned him global notoriety. He'd played with the Bird, Dizzy, Max Roach, Duke Ellington and had
released universally acclaimed albums as a leader like Blues & Roots', Oh Yeah' and 'Black Saint & The Sinner Lady'. This gig - one of a Jazz In Detroit series that also included Keith Jarrett, Tribe and Herbie Hancock - took place a few months after the release of Mingus' 'third stream' masterpiece 'Let My Children Hear Music'.The music on these tapes is blazing. According to the late Roy Brooks, the band - which included himself and
fellow Detroit trumpeter Joe Gardner - had not long returned from playing two tours in Europe. Fresh to the quintet was stellar pianist Don Pullen and listening to these recordings Pullen's church-driven power, blues sensibility and harmonic sophistication perfectly complements the bassist's own vision. On tenor
saxophone we have the soulful and innovative John Stubblefield. Like Pullen he was a recent recruit.Unfortunately, the saxophonist's time with Mingus lasted a mere 5 months: 'I got in a fight with Mingus and I shouldn't have done that. After that, I couldn't get arrested in New York." Ironically, when Sue Mingus
formed the Mingus Big Band in 1992, to perpetuate her husband's legacy, Stubblefield emerged as a talismanic presence in the ensemble until he passed in 2005. Thanks to BBE, 180 Proof Records and Strata Records we can now tune in to WDET-FM and transport ourselves back to Detroit '73, and get a taste of the furious energy and compositional sophistication of a unique and modern master at work in the most intimate
of settings.

EABS - Kraksa / Svantetic feat. Tenderlonious

22a presents a collaborative project with the Polish jazz septet EABS and featuring Tenderlonious on flute and soprano saxophone. Strictly limited to 1000 copies worldwide, this 12' of deep jazz is housed in colour sleeve and

includes an insert containing sleeve notes and photos. The Electro Acoustic Beat Sessions collective (EABS) are without doubt the most accomplished jazz group in the world right now. They have a unique and

innovative approach to music, fusing elements of Polish and classic jazz with hip hop, funk and folk. Their debut album 'Repetitions (Letters to Krzysztof Komeda)' is a dedication to Polish Jazz legend Krzysztof Komeda that focusses

on compositions by Komeda between 1962 and 1967. The album explores Komeda's lesser-known compositions featured in ballet etudes, movies, short films, documentaries and animations.

'Kraksa/Svantetic' is the final part of a dedication to Krzysztof Komeda, recorded straight to tape at Radio Opole in Poland. Polish jazz has had a big influence on 22a and Tenderlonious and working with

EABS became a priority after hearing their album. Tenderlonious was therefore delighted to accept their invitation to go out to Poland to perform with them.

J-jazz Deep Modern Jazz From Japan 1969-1984

BBE
20.06.2018

In the years following the World War Two, Japan developed one of the most insatiable, dynamic and diverse markets for jazz. For a crucial period of little over a decade - from the late 1960s to the early 1980s - Japanese jazz culture progressed at an astonishing rate, producing an extraordinary array of artists, recordings and record labels that created some of the most forward thinking and impressive jazz to be committed to tape. This amazing journey
is explored on 'J Jazz. This compilation from BBE uncovers some of the most sought after and rare material from this period and pulls together key artists who shaped the post-war modern jazz scene in Japan.'J Jazz' includes obscure and sought after rarities like the bass-driven power jazz of Koichi Matsukaze's 'Earth Mother', the holy grail rarity of Aizawa Tohru Quartet's 'Dead Letter' and the loping majesty of Takeo Moriyama's 'North Wind'. This collection takes the listener into deep spiritual jazz, post-modal impressionism and fierce dance-floor fusion with material from artists and composers whose names are generally only known to committed collectors of Japanese jazz. Fumio Karashima, Mitsuaki Katayama, Takeo Moriyama and Kiyoshi Sugimoto are among the names featured on an album aiming to shed a little light on the shadowy world of Japanese jazz clubs, tucked away in the neon backstreets. This music demands a wider audience and BBE are excited to deliver a landmark compilation, lifting the veil on this wonderful and mysterious area of the global jazz catalogue.None of the tracks featured on 'J Jazz' have ever received an official release outside Japan before. The albums the tracks are taken from are extremely hard to find and often fetch huge sums on the collector's circuit. Originally pressed in small numbers on independent and private labels such as Union, Johnny's Disk, Whynot, ALM and VAP, these tracks are now available for everyone to enjoy. Compiled by Tony Higgins and Mike Peden, both long-time collectors of Japanese jazz, 'J Jazz' brings together the very best in modern jazz from Japan, recorded during a critical period of musical and cultural transition that saw composers and musicians not only assert a new artistic identity but also create a lasting musical legacy.

Chip Wickham - Shamal Wind Remixes

Shamal Wind Remixes

13.11.2018

Shamal Wind, the celebrated second album by UK flautist and sax player Chip Wickham gets revisited by three producers cooler than the other side of the pillow, hailing from London and Berlin. Max Graef, Reginald Omas Mamode IV, and Ishmael Ensemble get their hands on the tracks of one of the jazz albums of the year and come up with four epic remixes.

Max Graef, who's just put out some excellent releases on Tartelet Records and Apron Records, delivers not one but two remixes of 'Soho Strut': the laid-back, percussive and bleepy Bongo Mix, and the trippy, speedy-not-speedy Bass Mix.

'Rebel No.23' gets renamed '(Soul) Rebel 23' by 22a's Reginald Omas Mamode IV, referencing Bob Marley in an exquisitely soulful and fuzzy rework featuring Reginald's own added vocals.

And finally, Pete Cunningham and his Ishmael Ensemble mix up the original tracks and additional instrumentation on their titanic, trance-inducing version of 'Snake Eyes'.

2018 has been a busy year for Chip Wickham. In May he released his second solo album, Shamal Wind, after which he went on tour with his own band and also as part of his friend Matthew Halsall's Gondwana Orchestra, celebrating Gondwana's 10 anniversary all over Europe.

Over the years, Chip Wickham has played and collaborated with an impressive string of artists, from Nightmares On Wax and Badly Drawn Boy to Grand Central Records, Roy Ayers, The New Mastersounds and Matthew Halsall. In 2017, he released his debut album, La Sombra, followed by Shamal Wind a year later. Both albums got heavy support from the likes of Gilles Peterson, Laurent Garnier, Craig Charles, Jez Nelson, Gideon Coe, Toshio Matsuura, Lefto, and Dom Servini, to name a few. Apart from playing out his own work, in 2017 and 2018 he toured with Matthew Halsall, and American spiritual jazz kingpin Dwight Trible.

Eli Keszler - Stadium

Eli Keszler

Stadium

2x12inchSP099
Shelter Press
19.10.2018

With both his close collaborators Daniel '0PN' Lopatin and Laurel Halo smoking in the back seat of 'Stadium', Keszler is the dynamic battery behind a shadow-strafing suite of spidery rhythms
and inquisitive jazz gestures, effortlessly binding avant instrumental dexterity with cool blue harmolodic sentiment in a timeless style that could feasibly be dated to any point between the mid '70s heyday of jazz-fusion and right now.
Painted in diffuse strokes, darting flurries, and intoxicatingly rich tones, 'Stadium' perfectly shows off Keszler's expressive grasp of meter, texture and proprioception from myriad angles. Combined
with floating Rhodes chords, sighing woodwind and field recordings, the results also demonstrate Keszler's uncanny capacity to transmute sound to limn landscapes, architecture and the sensation of being lost in a crowd. In the case of 'Stadium' he uses this ability to specifically reflect his recent house move from the semi-industrial scape of South Brooklyn to the high rise topography and street level bustle of Manhattan, beautifully and subtly connoting multi-storeyed perspectives and a sense of scale that zooms from the atomic to the panoramic via a gauzy, morphing middle-distance.
Within this space, Keszler navigates webs of sound as structurally fascinating as a spider's web or a deep space image of a distant constellation, seemingly moving on eight legs along steep vertical
and fast-flowing horizontal axes with a shocking grasp of precision and pointillism that will leave new listeners to his work scratching their heads, wondering how you programme such chicanery
electronically. But as longer term followers of Keszler's work know, the magick is all acoustic and haptic, physically converting impressions of images and emotions into overlapping geometries
of geography and psychology - and in this case effectively projecting a singular, inverted form of sonic deep topography, if you will.
Perhaps the most wondrous thing about 'Stadium' is the way it describes the paradoxical quality of keeping your head amid the chaos - a notion that will surely resonate with inner city dwellers
as much as fans of the finest noise, jazz, avant-garde music of all stripes, and is firmly at the heart of 'Stadium' and its amorphous milieu of sound.
