The New Tutenkhamen - I Wish You Were Mine

Nyami Nyami Records present a lost piece of Zimbabwean musical history: the only album from local legends the New Tutenkhamen, combining Jazz, Soul, Folk and Township rhythms. There are only 2 known copies of the original LP - this reissues make the music available again for the first time in over 40 years.

The New Tutenkhamen included many stars of Zimbabwean township music: Elisha Josamu was an alumnus of the fabulously-named Hallelujah Chicken Run Band (alongside Thomas Mapfumo), and Green Jangano's long-running Harare Mambos, and would later form Two Plus Two with bassist Christopher 'Chex' Tavengwa. Jethro Shasha played the drums, and would arguably become the New Tutenkhamen's most famous export, making continental waves working with likes of Salif Keita. Paul Sekerani played the rhythm guitar, with Amos Chatyoka on the organ, while the enigmatic Maggie Mbuli provided vocals and F. Manda played the sax.I WISH YOU WERE MINE was recorded at Teal Records and was produced by Crispen Matema, a talented jazz drummer in his own right who had played drums on the all-time classic 'Skokiaan', and had backed Louis Armstrong on his 1960 Rhodesia visit. Combining the heavyweight producing talents of Matema and the writing chops of Josamu, the New Tutenkhamen band created an album showcasing various musical styles popular at the time.

From the afro-jazz jam session aesthetics of 'Tutenkhamen Theme', 'Big Brother Malcom' and 'Forever Together', to the almost Van Morrison-sounding 'Sunday Morning'; from the upbeat rock ballad 'True Love', to the funk-infused dance song 'Togetherness'; from the bouncy jazz exhortations to work hard in 'Ane Nungo', to the brassy, raunchy foot-stomper 'Me & Dolly'. The title track 'I Wish You Were Mine' is a ska-infused ballad that wouldn't be out of place in post-war Birmingham, while the star of the show is 'Joburg Bound', itself a fast-paced rock piece with Motown undertones and funky guitar lines.

Afro-Blue Persuasion - Cuban Fantasy

**UNRELEASED AFRO-CUBAN JAZZ**

Afro-Cuban Jazz of the highest orderl! And even better, these two songs have remained UNRELEASED for the past 52 years! Vibraphonist, flutist, and band leader Ulysses Crockett was a big name on the Bay Area latin-jazz scene of the 1960s. He started out with his own group Afro Blue Persuasion which included a very young Paul Jackson on bass who later became famous as a member of Herbie Hankock's fusion-jazz masters The Headhunters.

"Cuban Fantasy" and "Poinciana" were both recorded live in 1967 but remained unreleased until now. Both songs are taken from the soon to be released 33rpm record titled "Live at Haight Levels" which includes more unreleased material as well as the full length version of both of these two edited tunes.

This 7" runs at 33rpm to provide the best sound quality possible.

Duke Pearson - I Don't Care Who Knows It

'This collection of performances, previously unissued in their entirety, drawn from five recording sessions from 24 June 1968 to Duke's second-to-last Blue Note session on February 13 1970, shows both sides of his musical nature. On one hand, Andy Bey is belting out a backbeat-driven Buddy Johnson tune. On the other, Duke is scoring Brazilian guitarist Baden Powell's haunting Canto Ossanha for alto flute and alto clarinet. From October 1969, on his own Xibaba (Brazilian slang for marijuana), Airto Moreira is wailing with both his voice and hands. Soul music from another part of the world.'

-The first ever complete release of the 1968, '69 and '70 sessions on a limited edition double vinyl LP

- All Analogue mastering: taken from Rudy Van Gelder tapes; transferred by Grammy-Award winning mastering engineer Sean Magee at Abbey Road Studios

-180 gram audiophile quality double LP

-Gatefold cover artwork features previously unpublished original Blue Note session photos

Sarah Tandy - Infection in the Sentence

A unique voice within the new UK jazz generation, 'Infection in the Sentence' is shaped by London's thriving and diverse live music scene.

Swiftly rising to become one of the most in-demand players of her generation, Sarah Tandy has performed on keys for Jazz Jamaica, Nu Civilisation Orchestra, Maisha, Where Pathways Meet, Camilla George, Nubya Garcia, Nerija, Daniel Casimir, Binker Golding, Clark Tracey and many more. She is also a member of Ronnie Scotts House Band, the W3 Collective.

On 'Infection in the Sentence', Tandy's technical virtuosity showcases a fearless approach to her own individual brand of piano-led jazz. "The music developed gradually through many years playing on London's underground music scene... In the album I'm seeking to find a continuum between the jazz music which I grew up listening to, and the multi-faceted, genre-melting sounds of present day London", she says.

A finalist in BBC Young Musician of the Year, she also held a residency at Servant Jazz Quarters in Dalston where she met band members Femi Koleoso (Ezra Collective, Jorja Smith), Mutale Chashi (Kokoroko, Jorga Smith), and Binker Golding (Binker & Moses), who were pivotal to her development. The inimitable Sheila Maurice-Grey plays trumpet in the band.

She's performed at Love Supreme, Berlin Jazz Festival, and twice with her her trio at the Ronnie Scotts International Piano Trio Festival supporting Robert Glasper.

In an earlier incarnation, she has also appeared as a classical soloist with the BBC Symphony Orchestra. In 2019, Tandy will be one of many jazz re:freshed artists to appear at SXSW. She will be performing songs from 'Infection in the Sentence' at the album launch at Ronnie Scotts, London on the 4thMarch.

blaue Gesichter, verzerrte Perspektiven."

Ruby Rushton - Ironside

Ruby Rushton

Ironside

2x12inch22A027LP
22a
09.04.2019

22a proudly present's the 4th studio album from the Tenderlonious

led jazz quartet - Ruby Rushton. 'Ironside' is Ruby Rushton's most

complete work to date and was recorded over a 2 day session at the

legendary Abbey Road Studios.

'Ironside' sees the band continuing to push boundaries, and lead the way, with this

new genre defying recording. The quartet's fresh, high energy sound is rooted in

the spiritual concepts of John Coltrane and Yusef Lateef, paying homage to The

Headhunters and Weather Report heyday, whilst still adopting influences from hip

hop, Afrobeat and the UK underground culture.

'Ironside' - meaning someone who is 'courageous and possessing great physical

and mental strength' sums up the Ruby Ruston journey so far. A personal, against

the odds journey, that required Tenderlonious starting a label, 22a, back in 2013.

Nobody much cared about jazz back in 2011 when the first Ruby Ruston album

('Two For Joy') was recorded, so the 22a platform was built, a home for friends and

members of the family to release music from. Fast forward to 2019 and the jazz

landscape is looking a whole lot healthier.

The album's title track embodies its meaning more than any other track on the

album. A highly technical, jazzy jungle mover, held down by Tim Carnegie's drums

and Tenderlonious' expeditious flute solo.

'The Return Of The Hero' nods most explicitly to the ever-present flute hero Yusef

Lateef, the prancing dance of 'Eleven Grapes' builds a locked groove perpetually

upwards in spirals of dizzying frency, whilst 'Triceratops The Caller' evokes

alternating contributions from 4 Hero's sampled breaks, J-Dilla's loping beats and

Lonnie Liston Smith's cosmic keys, all of which coalesce in a perfect, joyous blend.

The solemn beauty of 'Prayer for Greenfell' is a respectful and dignified memorial,

befitting of the magnitude of many lives stolen and 'Pingwin VI' is dedicated to

another hero of Tenderlonious - the Polish jazz legend Kristof Komeda.

Personnel: Ed 'Tenderlonious' Cawthorne (flute, soprano saxophone, synth,

percussion), Nick Walters (trumpet and percussion), Aidan Shepherd (keys and

synths), Tim Carnegie (drums)

Adele Sebastian - Desert Fairy Princess

Adele Sebastian was an Afro American jazz flutist and singer, active from the early 70s (when she was still a teenager) until her untimely death at the age of 27 (!) in 1983 from a kidney failure. In fact she had been depending on monthly dialysis to stay alive for years. She lived through and for the music and you can hear it on her only solo album 'Desert Fairy Princess' which was first issued in 1981. The mostly acoustic instrumentation brings a very natural and therefore rather retrospective sound considering the year the album was recorded. Adele and her band pull it off right from the start as if it had been 1966 and it was time for a revolution to shake the dust from the old time jazz. In a perfect way she mixes classic American vocal jazz elements with playful and more free passages, Latin music and tribal African sounds in the lengthy and quite rhythm oriented 'Man From Tanganyika' and makes the title track start with a mystical 'Allahu akbar' chant while it turns more and more into a dark and gloomy song with something like a psychedelic edge reminiscent of Pharoah Sanders on his early works. Wild rhythms from drums, percussions with tons of bells and chimes weave a thick groove carpet and conjure a magical atmosphere. Those jazz aficionados who love the mid 60s John Coltrane, his sidekick Pharoah Sanders and Alice Coltrane will go crazy for this album.

Charles Tolliver - All Stars

Charles Tolliver

All Stars

12inchSES-19681
Strata-East
19.03.2019

This was Charles Tolliver's first album as a leader. The setting is unique only because his second Freedom-Black Lion album 'The Ringer' and all of his subsequent albums on Strata-East featured his quartet Music Inc. with pianist Stanley Cowell. Here he is surrounded in quartet and quintet formats with a truly stellar cast of the leading players on the New York jazz scene.

Charles plays the role of leader, composer and trumpeter. But it is surely that last role that deserves the most attention. The trumpet is a brass instrument that leans toward a hard sound and staccato phrasing. Yet Tolliver is the quintessence of fluidity. While it may be undeniable that he has learned from his musical heritage and past trumpet masters, a trumpeter of such flow, tone, control, lyricism and creativity is, by definition, a major musician.

Charles Tolliver first came to the professional jazz scene in the mid-sixties, when he first met Jackie McLean. Under McLean's leadership, he played on a number of Blue Note record sessions, some of which have yet to be released. He contributed original tunes to many of those sessions.

Within a couple of years, Tolliver was a well known figure in New York circles, playing and/or recording with Booker Ervin, Archie Shepp, Andrew Hill, Roy Ayers, Art Blakey, Sonny Rollins, Willie Bobo, Gerald Wilson, McCoy Tyner, Hank Mobley, and many others. His compositions were getting recorded by many artists. He gained his greatest recognition during a two year stint with the Max Roach quintet that also included Gary Bartz and Stanley Cowell.

There is also a previously unreleased bonus track of the song, "Repetition", recorded by Charles for this LP which will be included on this new release of the album. This song was originally made famous by Charlie Parker's LP With Strings.

This album is certainly an important and lasting document in light of the musicians involved and in light of its unique context for Charles Tolliver. But basically, it is just a great album to listen to. Michael Cuscuna

Clifford Jordan Quartet - Glass Bead Games

Fifth part of the Strata-East Dolphy Series, Glass Bead Games is arguably the crown jewel of the Strata East movement, an amorphous genre that treads an unusual path between post-bop, 70's avant-garde and spiritual jazz, with a groove.

Glass Bead Games is full of revelations at many levels. First, the decade of the 1970s did produce genuinely creative, "human" new music flowing from the jazz mainstream; second, Bill Lee was more than Spike's dad: he was a superlative bassist, a team player of the first order, a powerful catalyst who, if anything, deserves to be better known than his son; third, Billy Higgins was, as so many musicians insist, a once-in-a-lifetime drummer—the bellows inspiriting the collective flame.

Most importantly, Clifford Jordan was an artist of the first order, his playing so effortless and unforced, unselfconscious and focused, mature and wise that, at a time when altissimo fury was all the rage, it's small wonder his authentic voice frequently went unheard. His musical rhetoric is so personally expressive, its substance so compelling, the listener couldn't care less about the extraordinary technique required to convey its captivating message. Compared to some of his more acclaimed peers he's a less aggressive yet paradoxically more directive and shaping influence. The climaxes, rather than spelled out, are merely suggested, registering with deep and lasting impact on the listener. It all comes down to learning the language, those precious little beads. Not every player, including Jordan or the listener, can use it like Shakespeare, but all can learn to read Shakespeare and understand its principles of arbitrariness and serendipity, of invariance and transformation.

Jordan, no less than Shakespeare, requires a like-minded cast of players—in this case four musicians of such redoubtable proficiency that each remains committed to keeping the beads in play. He's not a man content with a mere musical "dialogue" with his fellow musicians nor is he about to take the initiative in pulling his troops up to his level. Instead he begins to tell a musical story that's so compelling his three comrades are inspired equally to contribute to a collaborative narrative. This is brilliant music-making by a Coltrane- influenced successor who feels no obligation to mime the predecessor. It may be the most significant saxophone performance on record since Coltrane and, providing the listener stays with it for any length of time, the most deeply satisfying. Jordan's game—so effortless, unforced, and "level"—erases distinctions between composed and improvised, soloist and ensemble, narrator and narrative, the dancer and the dance. It seems incapable of wearing out its welcome.

Dadisi Komolahe - Hassan's Walk

Don't let the date fool you, released back in 1983 this modal to slightly free jazz outfit from California takes you on a journey back to the late 60s and very early 70s, into the spiritual realms of greats like John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, John McLaughlin and Miles Davis among others. A soul jazz treasure from the LA scene of the early 80s - a fantastic record that I rank with the best Strata East sides of the time! The group's led by alto saxophonist Dadisi Komolafe, and features vibes by Ricky Kelly, piano by Eric Tillman, bass by Roberto Miranda, and drums by Sunship Theus - all working together in a style that's infused with soulful, post-Coltrane exploratory energy, never going too far outside, and always staying true to the rhythmic pulse at its core. Kelly's vibes are really great - sparkling underneath solos by Komolafe that remind me a lot of Gary Bartz's earliest work.

It has been produced by the legendary Om'Mas Keith (Frank Ocean, Erykah Badu, Jay-Z) and long-time collaborator Aston Rudi. anaïs arrived in late 2017 with her critically-lauded debut EP 'Before Zero'. Featuring breakthrough track 'nina', the EP was a fiercely intelligent introduction that explored her fascinating life so far (for those unaware, she was born in Toulouse, France but of Senegalese origin, grew up in Ireland and Oakland California before graduating from NYU). A great 2018 included a stunning collaboration with friend Olly Alexander on No Control, her own sold out headline show, festival performances at Great Escape and All Points East, a jam packed room at Pitchfork in Paris plus supporting Nakhane and Samm Henshaw . 'Darkness At Play' isn't a record that shies away from the ugly truth. Sven-Åke Johansson - grau-grün-welk-satt

You can hit beats so that they betray an intention - through accentuation or emphasis. Or you can hit them so that they seem mechanical, devoid of intention, a pure pulse, as in much minimalist music. Both possibilities abound in different genres. But there is also a third one, and that is what Sven-Åke Johannson has concerned himself with again and again: to hit so as to produce one or several accents, or in any case traces of intention, and then to frame them by means of repetition and regularity so that the intention as such fades and appears as a regular, planned part of a now quasi-mechanical process. - Diedrich Diederichsen

*** interview and exclusive mix etc radio, WNUR FM, Chicago, 4.1.2019 ***

** interview & airplay of the whole album @ OE1, ORF - Zeitton Extended 3rd of february 2019 **

In his latest composition, DOLOMITE DUB, the Vienna-based South Tyrolean sound artist Ulrich Troyer presents his perceptions of a several-day high alpine hike across the Dolomites transformed into a soundscape.

The more than 40 minute track DOLOMITE DUB leads the listeners through this landscape of heights transgressing different moods - in which autobiographical memories flash up as well.

Subsequently to the experimental dub trilogySongs for Williamand the EPDeadlock Versions, a cooperation with Vin Gordon and Didi Kern, DOLOMITE DUB features besides Didi Kern on drums & percussion, Susanna Gartmayer on contra-alto clarinet and Juergen Berlakovich on bass, both long-time ensemble members of the joint project "The Vegetable Orchestra".

Black Light Smoke - City Life

Scissor and Thread regular Black Light Smoke returns to the Brooklyn label run by Francis Harris for a mini LP of raw, atmospheric house. The alias of Jordan Lieb, Emmy Award winning composer/producer/musician, Black Light Smoke drops City Life - six tracks of affecting, deep vibes.
'In Gold' is rich in analog warmth, a bubbling deep house roller that echoes some of the New York, Detroit and Chicago greats. Title track 'City Life' is a stripped down rhythm track, populated with stabs, melodic flourishes, and beautifully arranged pads - as well as a killer vocal. 'Make My Piece' is built around a vocal hook and roughneck drum track, before opening up with crunchy percussion and a sick bassline. Next one is 'Up In This', starting on a dreamy tip, but exploding into life with Lieb's signature feel for propulsive rhythms and deep, warm tones. 'Without You' is a tougher proposition, using heavy compression and distortion to texture the track, while the digital bonus track 'Every Beat (No Regrets)' is a fitting end to the release - a woozy, after-hours come down vibe, wrapping up this journey.

Charly Kingston - Born in Africa - High Fashion

Official repress on 12" of these sought after Charly Kingson tunes..
The label says:
Charly Kingson, (ps. for Charlie Kingue Soppo) is a legend of afro-funk who managed to shake the entire continent up with his infamous 1978 LP, Born In Africa. Often forgotten when conversations turn to Afro-dance, and the likes of Tony Allen or Fela Kuti, he has been an incredible source of inspiration to many musicians exploring the funkier side of jazz-dance, and this album itself goes way beyond any traditional notion of tropical discotheque. "Born In African" itself is a funky groover for the dancefloor and here is the original 1982 Remix, made by Dutch legendary percussionist Eddie Conard available again, featuring Nimele Bolo' on the flip-side. Released in 1982 on Ariola/Fleet, but also pressed on the original Fleet label. The latter (remarkably with identical catalog-number) never saw daylight. But, we got them all! All in all, this hard to find 12' (at Discogs copies on the Ariola/Fleet label go for around 250 euro) was recently re-discovered, and now you can finally enjoy it again.

Stroer Duo - Fluchtweg Madagaskar

Hans P. and Ernst Ströer are the Ströer Bros. Based close to Munich, Bavaria, they work as composers, arrangers, musicians, producers and authors, traveling between many different musical worlds. Hans plays bass, guitars and piano, Ernst plays all kinds of drums and percussion. The two of them descended from the wildly expanded jazz brew of the '70s. In early 1979 Hans went on a six week tour through eleven African countries as a bass player in Jazz guitarist Volker Kriegel's group Mild Maniac Orchestra. Inspired by his experiences on tour, Hans suggested to do a freestyle album together with Ernst. Avantgarde pianist Wolfgang Dauner's Jazz label Mood Records offered them one week of studio time in the well equipped rooms of an old sugar factory between Christmas and New Years Eve 1981. They spent every minute in the studio, sleeping in the recording room, switching between mixing console and musical instruments. The brothers recorded their own performances and engineered the mixes, drumming, playing bass, guitars, all kinds of percussion and keyboards, singing and yelling. The result was the album 'Fluchtweg Madagaskar' ('escape route to Madagascar') released in 1982. The contrast between African and German lifestyles, underlined by the early 80s tensions between nuclear warheads and the peace movement can be felt at the very core of this album. The fear that Germany could become an atomic battlefield made many young Germans think about emigration. Using a walkman hidden in their pocket, the brothers took numerous field recordings sampled over gripping, heavily accented rhythms. A true independent album, music and early sound design without boundaries nor limits. All songs are remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Each copy includes double sided insert with lyrics, photos and liner notes by the duo. Alternative.
