This latest addition to the From The Vault series captures a truly unique event in the long and eventful history of The Rolling Stones. On the 20th May 2015 at the Fonda Theatre in Hollywood, California, the band performed the entire Sticky Fingers album live in concert for the first and so far only time in their career. The show celebrated the reissue of the Sticky Fingers album and was the opening night of The Rolling Stones Zip Code Tour of North America that would run over the next two months. The intimate setting of the Fonda Theatre was in contrast to the huge stadiums in which the band would perform for the rest of the tour and made this an incredibly special occasion for those fans lucky enough to get a ticket. The DVD & Blu-ray include interviews with the band members intercut with full length performances. The CD and 3LP feature the full show as performed on the night.

LP + CD

It was early 2008 and The Wedding Present were in Chicago, recording their seventh album, El Rey. But they had also recently completed a successful 'twentieth anniversary' concert tour for their debut LP George Best and, having played that entire album dozens of times live, it was fresh in their minds and under their fingers. So, after they'd wrapped up recording El Rey, David suggested they lay down a 'live' version of George Best in the same studio. After all, the equipment was already set up and the band were on fire. Steve Albini, with whom they were recording, initially wasn't too keen on the idea but David assured him it would be quick and easy. Albini grudgingly caved. But David was right, it was quick... recorded live, more like an early Beatles LP or a Wedding Present Peel Session than a long drawn out modern recording with a bunch of overdubs and multi-tracked layering. One could almost imagine that this is the version of George Best that David would have liked to have recorded back in 1987. It is just so well done... as you'd expect, of course, with Albini at the controls. But you can also feel David's 20 years older self guiding the new recording with experience and confidence. Everything is bigger... the drums on the original recording were played live, but were done on a 'Simmons' electronic drum kit. The combination of Albini's recording and the ultra-talented Graeme Ramsay on 'real' drums brings these frantic songs to life. However, the real difference comes out in the way those super-fast, ever-jangly guitars sound... they're warmer, they're rockier, they're more modern. More... Albini! To round everything off with another contemporary twist, multi award-winning mixer/producer Andrew Scheps (last heard on The Wedding Present's ground-breaking Going, Going... album) enthusiastically agreed to mix the finished recordings, having heard the original LP for the first time in his living room in Los Angeles in 2012, when he was mixing The Wedding Present's eighth studio album, Valentina.

Eddy Current Suppression - Primary Colours

Goner Records is proud to present the second album from Melbourne, Australia's EDDY CURRENT SUPPRESSION RING. Primary Colours was released to rave reviews and sold out shows Down Under, with the first week sales putting the record at number six on the Australian national charts. Guitarist Eddy Current says, 'musically, to me it sounds a bit more '82ish than the '76ish sound of our first LP, slightly less frantic and maybe a bit more palatable.'

Fantastic Australian garage-punk band continues its quick rise on this hastily made but powerfully packed new album.' - Pitchfork

When Eddy Current Suppression Ring formed in Melbourne, Australia, in 2003, bandmates Eddy Current, Rob Solid, Danny Current, and Brendan Suppression thought they would play a few shows and perhaps record a 7-inch or two. One of their first gigs, in fact, was an employee Christmas party at the record pressing plant where they worked.
Six years later, the band has racked up accolades from the likes of SPIN Magazine, London's Guardian newspaper, and the Australian Independent Record Labels Association. In March of 2009, they were awarded the $30,000 Australian Music Prize for their second album, Primary Colours.

Eddy Current's third full-length, Rush to Relax, is already one of the most anticipated releases of 2010. Cut last August in a six-hour session at Melbourne's Revolver Rehearsal Studios, the album combines stripped-down post-punk sensibilities with the sheer exhilaration of a four-man musical unit that has created its own language, and will never run out of new things to say.

While Primary Colours drew on what Guardian music critic Tom Hughes described as "fast 'n' fuzzy garage rock," Rush to Relax employs a pop ethos more common to the mid-'80s Dunedin Sound of New Zealand's Flying Nun label, with cascading guitar riffs and precise rhythms shadowing the introspective lyrics from black-gloved frontman Brendan Suppression. The geographical tug is most prevalent on "Anxiety," the new album's lead single, which is a guitar-driven homage to The Clean's whimsical, scene-launching debut "Tally-Ho," twisted via Eddy Current's inimitable style.

The frantic pace of "Anxiety" is somewhat of an anomaly for Rush to Relax, a shape-shifter of an album that has already garnered comparisons to Television's 1977 landmark debut Marquee Moon. Like that classic group, Eddy Current Suppression Ring harnesses tension and propulsion to blast past the barriers of everyday tedium.

"The Australian quartet works with the basics to produce a simple, hooky garage punk racket, yet delivers a surprisingly multi-layered mixture when everything is said and done." - Dusted

'A document of four dudes having a good time over the course of six years-- teases out the Australian punk-loving rock band's trajectory through B-sides and singles.' - Pitchfork
They've drawn comparisons to Wire, Can, The Fall, Fugazi and The Stooges. They have a singer who wears black gloves to overcome stage fright. They won the $30,000 Australian Music Prize for their 2008 album Primary Colours—then recorded the next one themselves in a few hours in their practice space and spent the dough on a photo shoot for the album cover. They do not care about you and your expectations. You could call them 'fiercely independent' but they don't seem fierce at all. Quietly, and definitely on their own terms, Eddy Current Suppression Ring has become a force in underground music.

Now, after three albums, it's time for a compilation of singles tracks, demos and other stuff they had lying round. Turns out there was lots to choose from—and even after trimming, they ended up with a double album. Goner Records is happy to provide So Many Things.

The Effect - Eyes To The Light

Formed in Washington, D.C. in January of 2014, the EFFECTS are Devin Ocampo, Matthew Dowling, and David Rich.

A multi-instrumentalist, Ocampo is a former member of the bands Faraquet, Medications, Smart Went Crazy, and Deathfix, all of whom released music on Dischord. He has also toured and recorded with Mary Timony, Beauty Pill, and J. Robbins.

Dowling was the bassist and co-leader of Deleted Scenes, while Rich was the drummer in the instrumental group, Buildings. Both released music on the experimental-minded (and now defunct) local record label, Sock- ets. Devin met both Matt and David years before and while there had been talk of a possible collaboration everyone had their own projects at the time. However, by 2014 all were between bands and it finally made sense to get together and start something new.

For the trio, playing together was a nice change in routine. It was a new configuration of musicians, rather than a recombination of old friends and former bandmates, which happens regularly in the close-knit music scene of Washington D.C. Matt and David offered a fresh perspective and (possibly) gave the Devin a nudge out of his comfort zone.

Since then, the EFFECTS have performed sporadically throughout the East Coast and digitally released four two-song singles. Their full-length debut, Eyes to the Light, will be out this fall on Dischord.

Falling Man - Ghost

Vynilla Vinyl
06.10.2017

Deluxe Edition 200 copies worldwide. 1 x LP 180gr black vinyl, silkscreen gatefold cover, CD included + PVC protective sleeve). Falling Man is: Sven De Potter, Lode Sileghem, Sander Van den Broecke, Paul Van De Velde.

'Forever is a lie' is a line from 'Soon', one of the songs on 'Ghost', the new album of the new Falling Man. Everything changes. Singer Sam Louwyck left the band. His blooming acting career did not allow him to spend more time on Falling Man. Sven De Potter, Lode Sileghem and Paul Van De Velde went on a quest for a new voice. Enter Sander Van den Broecke. Sang his last note 29 years ago in a 50'ies rhythm and blues cover band. After that: nothing more, except eagerness. Falling Man has always been fuelled by zest.

First: spend time in the practice room, than in the good old 'The Yellow Tape' recording studio. Falling Man reinvented itself, and asked long-time band-friend and producer Wouter Vlaeminck to record the album. A collection of songs where guitars and illusions are being shattered, driven by riffs and noise that penetrate the heart, just like the overall theme: loss. The underlying melodies and beats serve as soothing or fiery actors. It is still Falling Man, yet somewhat different.

They still love the Berlin Bowie, Sonic Youth, Unwound, The Fall, Beefheart, and Jon Spencer, a dash of fury and respect for David 'Pere Ubu' Thomas.

There is a lot of 'saying goodbye' on'Ghost'. The loss of youth in 'Wrong Song' and 'Soon', break-ups in 'Beach Blues' and 'Sleep'. 'Red Haze' focuses on self-control. Or loosing it. There is even an hommage to Suicide's singer, in 'Mister Vega', and in 'Robot Kaput' somebody looses the ground from under his feet. In 'My Ghost', een beloved-one goed. And 'Blood Moves' is about plain sex.

Howard Marks and Dylan Thomas are kindred linked by geography but separate by time. When you read Dylan Thomas's poetry, your imagination usually does it in the best Welsh baritone it can muster, basically as close as it can get to Howard Marks's speaking voice. Take all of that and add the gentlest yet most evocative and stirring music and the result is Do Not Go Gentle. The green vinyl is just a bonus.

Herbert Bodzin - Revival I - The Electric Jazz Rock Recordings

Revival is an as-of-yet totally undiscovered electric jazz rock recording from 1977 composed by visual artist and multi instrumentalist Herbert Bodzin. It features brilliant soulful fusion with echoed Fender Rhodes, phased flute, and electric bass and guitar. Most tracks are overdubbed with synthesizers. Fellow musicians are Hans Kämper (of legendary Krautrock group Annexus Quam), Bernd Szemeitzke, Peter Johannesdotter and Bernd Schöttner. Unreleased instrumental versions taken from the rare protest album "Niedersächsische Schlachteplatte".
.
"In 2016, a friend of mine randomly told me about a "...German Placebo album" - he was referring to the Marc Moulin led Belgian jazz fusion supergroup. Of course, this was an audacious comparison and he may have only used it to gain my attention. So he continues with "well, not really - but this album certainly has some breaks". He was talking about the Niedersächsiche Schlachteplatte - an album that I had neither seen nor heard about.

A few weeks later, I had a copy in my hands. Here was an LP that had been privately released in early 1977 by an artist collective as a protest action against the division and reformation of several rural districts close to Bremen. The original recording itself is an odd mixture of fusion jazz and "Platt", a northern German dialect, which is pretty hard to understand, even for most Germans. The idea for the project initially came from Mr. Gronau, a political activist and art teacher from Heiligenfeld. Assisted by Mrs. Traute Dittmann, they both provided the lyrics for the album. The musical background was written and composed entirely by Herbert Bodzin. I contacted Bodzin immediately when I heard the record. The story began.

Although Herbert Bodzin, born in 1936 close to Dortmund, may be little known within jazz circles nowadays, he was a prominent figure in the local scene in his day. He played piano, saxophone and flute and had been experimenting with synthesizers since the early 1970s. From 1957 until 1964, in the golden age of European modern jazz, he was in charge of the Jazzclub Hohenlimburg, in partnership with pianist Heinz Wendel. The scene nurtured countless fabulous jam sessions with local musicians and also led to contacts with other German and European jazzmen. Klaus Doldinger was invited a few times as well as the George Maycock Quintet from Düsseldorf, some of the best of the hard bop groups in Germany at that time. Bodzin even recalls how he used to jam with Peter Herbolzheimer in the mid 1960s, while legendary trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff and Dutch jazz pianist Jack van Poll inspired his playing as well.

While the public interest in jazz waned with the rise of the Beatles and other beat bands, Bodzin continuously sought out new developments within the genre. The days of Soul Jazz, Jazz Funk, and Jazz Rock came, bringing with them electrification and further tonal and rhythmic innovation. Meanwhile, Bodzin lived in Weye, close to Bremen - one of the districts that were about to be reformed. When it was time to perform the "Schlachteplatte', he was ready with his Fender rhodes and his new synthesizers to provide what he called "Modern Jazz Rock", as noted on the back of the original album sleeve.

The recording session with the band took place in two days in late 1976 at Boccacio, a small studio in Bremen. On the third day, Bodzin went back into the studio to record the synth backgrounds. The band consisted of Hans Kämper, former member of the legendary Krautrock band Annexus Quam, on trombone and guitar. Bernd Szemeitzke and Peter Johannesdotter, both local artists, featured on drums and percussion, while Bernd Schöttner played electric bass. Though the quintet didn't exist for very long and was initiated originally for the recording session only, a few live performances at political events took place. One of the bigger ones was "Das große Schlachtfest" on February 27th, a major event among the many actions against the division and reformation of the local districts.

The record itself was released just six days earlier, on February 22nd, 1977. 500 copies of the album were pressed, recalls Mr. Bodzin. The price was 12 DM (German marks, roughly about 6 EUR). About 300 were sold to the local constituency, almost entirely within non-jazz circles. The name "Niedersächsische Schlachteplatte" is a play on words. Niedersachsen is the region in question, whereas "Schlachteplatte" is a German meal with sausages and meat - the name literally translates to "slaughter dish" - a reference to how the land of Hoya was to be slaughtered.

Even though the combination of jazz and spoken word was moderately popular during that time, because of it's extreme locality, and perhaps also because it was politically motivated, the album was never a huge success. The few jazz fans that were reached by this album could not relate to the artwork and prose, and many local listeners could not relate much to the progressive music. Hence, the Schlachteplatte slipped into obscurity.

Nevertheless, the compositions and themes, the instrumentation with drums and percussion, electric bass, trombone, Bodzin's delayed piano, the phased flute and his overdubbed synth "string arrangements" make this album a serious hidden treasure. It is arguably one of the most unique German jazz recordings from the 1970s. It stands apart from most contemporary fusion as it retains notable touches of Bodzin's bebop and hard bop influences, yet builds progressive and even psychedelic elements into it. The musicians provided uptempo tunes such as Landswien Hoya (Land of Hoya), deep psychedelics on Kreisteilung (Flute of Freedom), 6/8 grooves on Ik kann di seggen (Let Me Tell You This) and more.

Due to the short run and its strictly local distribution the original record really never made it to the surface for jazz and rare groove collectors. Even in recent years and during the German rare groove trend in the late 90s it remained undiscovered. Unsurprisingly, the LP was not added to the Discogs database until late 2017. The aforementioned friend simply used it as a nice odd trade item with other vinyl collectors when original backstock copies of the album were being given away for a short time in 2013 at a local newspaper and later sold from a museum for a low price until they were gone.

Unfortunately, instrumental master tapes from before the vocals were overdubbed in a later session are inevitably lost. Either thrown away from the studio or, more likely, destroyed during a fire in September 1986 when an arsonist was active in Bodzin's hometown of Weye. One night, while he was away at a birthday ball, Bodzin's house - a 250 year old historical building - became engulfed in flames. Herbert Bodzin lost almost all of his personal belongings including an array of early synthesizers and his TEAC tape reels. Luckily and most importantly, his wife and four children were safe.

Because of the nonexistence of the master tapes, we carefully re-edited and re-mastered the material from a mint vinyl copy to a version whose quality surprised even us. All tracks still have a length of 4 minutes, the arrangements are intact and one surely will not miss anything. Any of the six tracks is a winner, and has something for everyone! Our approach to this album required fresh artwork and new title because of the omission of the original political speech and poetry. Even though we respect the political aspirations of the artists of the original work, and appreciate the lyrical approach of the "Platt" dialect, we hope that the new recording, "Revival", can finally reach the ears and hearts of jazz fans and fusion enthusiasts. It may not be "...a German Placebo", but Herbert Bodzin's brilliant compositions and beautiful production represents an important missing piece in German jazz history.

By the way, while in contact with Herbert Bodzin - who is now 80 years old and still active as steel artist, painter and musician - we were led to a totally unreleased recording employing experimental synths from 1982 that survived the fire. This unreleased masterpiece will be entitled "Revival II" and is slated to be our next project on "The Artless Cuckoo". "

Crowd Of Chairs - Fuck Fuck Fuck

triple x six-six-six counting
Here comes Crowd of Chairs! With Fuck Fuck Fuck, their debut album, these Ghent based noiseheads (winners of 'De Beloften' 2015) have created an energy and vibe that is unique to Belgium.
FFF is a eleven-track trip that flirts with the bounderies of noiserock, post-punk and hardcore in the vein of Liars, Metz and Pissed Jeans. Crowd of Chairs really proves that there are no bounderies in energy.
The young imprint Live Fast Die Young is set to bring the best from the buzzing Belgian underground.

Ever since I was a kid I've loved the blues. I used to buy The Blues Collection magazine back in the 90s - I've still got all of those CDs. It's a genre that I've always loved and doing this album was a dream come true.' Keith Weir. There's a genuine buzz in the Quireboys' camp as the veteran rock and rollers ready their most ambitious album to date. It's never been black and white where The Quireboys are concerned,' said frontman Spike. There have always been shades of the blues. And now we've got the perfect chance to put a new twist on some old classics.' But why now After a successful foray into the world of Americana and the release of their most raucous album to date (2016's Twisted Love), the decision to record a raft of iconic blues tunes might seem like a surprise - almost sideways - move. Far from it. When Spike and I met Chris Ingham from Ramblin' Man Fair he floated the idea of doing a blues set at this year's festival and we loved the idea,' said guitarist Guy Griffin. Why not do something different to the norm And at that point we sensed an opportunity to make a blues record. All of the guys are great musicians - as a band we can play anything. I suppose the trick was giving these blues classics a unique twist and that's what we've tried to do.' And on White Trash Blues the genre's legends come thick and fast. Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Chuck Berry and Billy Boy Arnold are all afforded a unique Quireboys makeover. Never has Spike sounded so authentic and the band so audibly confident. The album came together very organically but they are songs everyone has played at different times over the years and they feel like they're part of our history,' said guitarist Paul Guerin. There are a few leftfield choices and we love that but it's always great to give the classics a go. We're naturally suited to playing the blues but let's be honest - once Spike starts singing they all sound like they could be Quireboys songs. And they can be!' Featuring special guest Lee Vernon, from Pearl Handled Revolver, on harmonica, White Trash Blues is the perfect companion to what promises to be a set to remember at Ramblin' Man Fair. We didn't just want to do carbon copies of these great old songs but at the same time we wanted to pay due respect to the people behind the songs,' said keyboard player and self-confessed blues aficionado Keith Weir. I think we've managed to strike the right balance.' The Quireboys are: Spike (vocals), Guy Griffin (guitar), Paul Guerin (guitar), Keith Weir (keyboards), Nick Mailing (bass), Dave McCluskey (drums).

Ananda Shankar - Ananda Shankar And His Music

If you read the name Shankar you may right away think of Ravi Shankar, the grand master of contemporary Indian folk music who was very popular in the 60s due to his connection with the music industry in the United States despite staying away from the pure pop music by maintaining his classic sitar and tabla style ragas to express himself musically. Ananda Shankar used to be his nephew who also made a journey to the USA to gather inspirations from rock artists like Jimi Hendrix among others. His first album from 1970, a conglomerate of classic Indian folk tunes and instrumental versions of the hottest rock songs of the day clothed in a veil of sitar melodies and backed up with tabla drum grooves, was an attempt to combine the spiritual approach of his cultural origins with the light minded blissful attitude of western psychedelic pop music. It worked well in the sense that it is still, nearly fifty years later on, a groovy little album that leaves nobody sitting around at any random hippie party. He took a five year break from recording to create what should become his second album and this is what I am about to present to you now. The cover-tunes were replaced by all original compositions with a lush instrumentation that features the typical sitar, tabla and bowed string instruments such as sarong and sera arrangements mixed with sounds that have a definite western origin such as rock guitars, Hammond organ and moog synthesizers plus full drum kits that take care to enhance the actual groove. Psychedelic rock, raga, fusion-jazz and funk flow into each other quite naturally giving birth to something fresh and exciting I would label as Bengali pop'. The borders between eastern and western music get abrogated here. If it was not for a few deeply mythical chants on a bed of drones here and there you could not even tell this was a record by an Indian artist. This album is quite accessible most of the time and comes with a certain slickness that makes it easy for the listener to understand and appreciate what is going on. Still there is the other side of the coin, the depth pop music often lacks. So in the end this might have been too far out for the average western mainstream fanatic back in 1975 when disco began to rule but it is an awesome sound trip for fans of psychedelic dance music like INCREDIBLE BONGO BAND and all eastern influenced popular rock.

Buddy Holly was one of the greatest, most inventive artists in the first wave of Rock & Roll, which the Buddy Holly Collected certainly illustrates. The selection shows his wild-man Rockabilly ways as well as his sensitive songwriting.

Although his success lasted only a year and a half before his death in an airplane crash, Holly is described by critic Bruce Eder as the single most influential creative force in early rock and roll.' The Buddy Holly Collected triple album stands as a great retrospective of the legendary artist.

Though it contains all the big hits, That'll Be the Day', Not Fade Away', and Peggy Sue', this collection encompasses much more, delving deeper into Holly's body of work. An absolutely necessity for anybody who loves American music of the 20th century.

His works and innovations inspired and influenced contemporary and later musicians, notably the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and Elvis Costello, and exerted a profound influence on popular music.

Captain Beefheart's debut album, originally released in 1967, is the most accessible and pop-inflected from his entire catalogue. Still, Safe As Milk is a very strong and heavily blues-influenced work but it also hints on many of the features that would later become the trademarks of Captain Beefheart.

A nice fact is that not only did a 20-year old Ry Cooder play bass & guitar on Abba Zaba' and Grown So Ugly', he also arranged the latter as well as Sure 'Nuff 'N Yes I Do'. Also, Cooder's role in the recording process was 'to translate the Captain's wilder notions to the rest of the band and generally acts as musical director'. With him as a supervisor, the sessions proceeded more or less smoothly and Safe As Milk was recorded within a month.

Fun fact, the album appears in the 2000 film High Fidelity as an album that the character Barry, played by Jack Black, continually refuses to sell to a customer, whom he deems unsuitable to own it.

The 7 bonus tracks are taken from the sessions for the unreleased 'Brown Wrapper' follow-up album. These tracks had been recorded around November 1967, two months after the release of Safe as Milk's and were from the same sessions that yielded the songs on Mirror Man Sessions (MOVLP260). The 50th Anniversary edition of Safe As Milk is pressed on Milky White vinyl. Only 1.500 individually numbered copies are available.
