Plath were a duo from Prato, formed in 1982 by Silvia Innocenti (voice, bass guitar) and Fabrizio Lucarini (synth, drum machine). Plath were influenced by Throbbing Gristle and early Cabaret Voltaire works, moving in between two essential thematic actions: first, the constant search of a sound which aims to reflect the current reality as they were interpretating it and, second, the constant exposure of their anarchist ideological thinking against the established political and social system.

While the A-Side includes the original single in full, with the classic 'I Am Strange Now', recently unearthed by Alessio Natalizia/Not Waving in his monumental 'Mutazione' compilation released by Strut Records in 2013, the B-side instead contains a killer percussive edit of Alessandro Adriani made for the most crazy mental dancefloors..

The first release by Britain's most enigmatic and unclassifiable band. Formed in 1968 by two Cambridge students, Fred Frith and Tim Hodgkinson, Henry Cow's original influences included the likes of Soft Machine and Frank Zappa. The band was staunchly anti-commercial, never compromising their sound to please anyone but themselves, and it is precisely because of this that they have gone on to influence so many musicians on the outer fringes of rock & roll on both sides of the Atlantic, particularly the NY experimental music scene.

A landmark in the history of European experimental rock, the third "Cow" work, originally released on Virgin in 1975, represents the second act of joined forces between Henry Cow and Slapp Happy, and the first fully integrated appearance of Dagmar Krause. In Praise Of Learning is a unique piece of art, showing perfect unity of political content, with rock complexity, extended song form and free noise explorations. MOLLY, a duo from Innsbruck, Austria, sound like a band out of time - and ahead of it.
Their music dense, at times cinematic, the pair mine both the Thames Valley and post-rock scenes from the late-80s for inspiration, whilst also adding hints of the otherworldliness found in Scandinavian bands such as Dungen, Sigur Rós and The Radio Dept. What they've done with all these elements is what sets them apart, creating music that is both immersive and captivating.
Working towards their debut album next year, their new EP, Glimpse, is out on December 8th on Dalliance Recordings. Featuring three brand new tracks, the EP is being pressed on a limited clear 12' likely to sell out on release, it's a great marker put down by them for what's to come next.
Another reason to get excited about MOLLY is their live show, as what they achieve on stage as just a two piece is nothing short of breathtaking. *REPRESS ALERT* Today we introduce Charles Howl, a London-based brit-psyche group with a thrillingly melodic sound.
Charles Howl release their debut album 'Sir Vices' with a dozen tracks that deliver. Comprised of Charles Howl & Bobby Voltaire (both of The Proper Ornaments) they elected to record at Syke Lane's warehouse studio on the outskirts of Leeds, utilizing the foggy and remote atmosphere. Locked away Howl honed his songwriting, and production skills, slowly bringing in a team of friends, including Chris Hicks (Talons) on bass and Wesley Patrick Gonzalez (Let's Wrestle), who laid down a lead line on track 5 while round for a cup of tea.
As some of the last children of the '80s and with a britpop upbringing, it's no wonder Charles Howl has produced an album that sounds like The Modern Lovers channeling The Stone Roses while maintaining its contemporary charm. It makes for an album that is outward looking with tight rhythms tying down whirling guitars and lustrous textures bouncing off melodies.
The band have already shared stages with the likes of Let's Wrestle, Younghusband, Toy and Fidlar, set to head out on a run of European dates in March (London show Shacklewell Arms 13th February).

The South will never rise again,' Jacky Cougar Abok intones in a manner that suggests he is looking straight into your eyeballs while singing the opening track on Des Demonas' debut album on In The Red Records. His hand may be around your neck as well! Sounding like The Last Poets acid tripping to '60s Sunset Strip, the band drags you on a wild ride of fuzzy guitars and swirling Farfisa organ, while the bass and drums keep pounding a rhythm to the brain. And that's just the first song! The band hails from Washington, DC, and have been denizens of the byways and highways of the city's musical underground for years. Jacky Cougar Abok is the six-footfive-inch tall Kenyan punk singer who has drummed with Thee Lolitas and Foul Swoops. Guitarist Mark Cisneros has bent strings with Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds, Deathfix, and Medications, and has pounded the traps for The Make-Up and Benjy Ferree, the latter alongside organist Paul Vivari. Joe Halladay (Citygoats) on bass and Ryan Hicks (Suns Of Guns) on drums round out this squared circle of sight and sound. The songs on this album range from Nuggets-style snottiness on Tuff Turf,' to the brash warnings of Liez' ( Lies... only seem to matter if you never wise up'), to the stomper Psychedelic Soldier' and cool psycho creeper Say You Tried,' to the hard boiled '70s punk of Swahilisung Golden Eggs.' Formed in 1961 when Dennis Wilson, the only Beach Boy to regularly visit the beach, asked his brother Brian to write a song about the sport of surfing. The Beach Boys reached number 75 in national charts with their first single (the resultant song 'Surfin'') and were immediately signed to a major label. Though many debut albums in the early '60s were mainly built around a few smash-hits, the Beach Boys' 1962 full length debut on Capitol (featuring such hits as 'Surfin' Safari,' '409' and their version of the Eddie Cochran classic 'Summertime Blues') remains one of the greatest first steps in American pop culture, and a mandatory chapter in the history of rock and roll.

Jesús Chamón (drums), José Luis Muñoz (bass and vocals), Gustavo González Ros (guitar) and José Luis Valderrama (keyboard and vocals) were friends from Madrid and shared their passion for music in the mid-sixties. Their first band was called Punto de Fuga and later it was renamed as Célula. They played in clubs making cover versions of Chicago, Santana, Deep Purple or Uriah Heep. One of the gigs was in 1972 in M&M, one of the most popular discos in Madrid. That was a very special night for them because in the audience was the curator of Teatro Español. He was searching for a band to play in the first Spanish opera rock, 'Marta la Piadosa'. He was so impressed that hired Célula for the project. The premiere of the show, with some of the best spanish actors of that time and with the band playing live, was held the 29th of June of 1973 in Toledo. After making a successful tour across Spain, the next and final step was the stage of Teatro Español, from the 5th of December of 1973 until the summer of 1974. The reviews were excellent and Célula even appeared in the national TV (Estudio Abierto). As happened to hundreds of bands, the military service destroyed the dreams of these youngsters. At least, they recorded the 16 songs of 'Marta la Piadosa' in Estudios Kirios and we can enjoy them after almost half a century. Progressive and hard rock meet in this great unreleased record.

Brand new reissue for a Belgian KBD punk rock classic by RAXOLA, formed in 1981 by Yves Kenge, who previously played in Bastard with Brian James from the Damned and Lords of The New Church. Raxola was a Belgian punk band spawned by the legendary Bastard, which also brought forth The Damned (through Brian James) and Elton Motello (through singer Alan Ward). Their debut album (1978) is now a collector's item. Formed along with better known bands, The Kids and Hubble Bubble in the fertile Belgian punk underground of the mid 70s, Raxola are usually the least name-checked of the three, but yet quite possibly the most brutal, and with their violently brilliant formula straddling their songs between sepulchral scrapings and melodic raw pop gargled with broken glass, they are long overdue on their time in the spotlight. Much appreciated for their rough pop punk songs and their somewhat socially and politically committed lyrics, Raxola has returned to the limelight, urged on by their fans. The only remaining original member, Yke N. Raxola (Yves Kengen) pushed ahead creating new material with Hadrien Frank, Dave Porzio and with a little help from Brian James, Fabrizio Manzini and other friends.

All tracks on this record have been selected from the cassette series Oscar's X-mas Carols, originally released on Christmas Day 1984, 1985 and 1987 by Oscar Smit's imprint Noel Tapes in Holland. I've had a thing for Christmas music ever since I heard Phil Spector's Christmas Album in the late 1970s. Through the years I've become a massive collector of every genre of Christmas songs. Each year, I can't wait for December, when I can play Christmas music again.

In the 1980s I worked for Vinyl, a Dutch monthly magazine. A lot of music at that time was released on cassettes. A significant number of cassettes were sent to Vinyl, from both the Netherlands and abroad, so many in fact that I began writing a separate column, Dolby, to discuss them. For some years, my Dolby page was a meeting place for fans of cassette music. In addition to Christmas music, I was also a big fan of experimental sounds, and I soon noticed that very little electronic Christmas music was being produced. That's when I got the idea of creating a cassette myself, featuring adventurous and original Christmas numbers. I was in contact with a lot of musicians because of my work at Vinyl, and I invited a large number of them to record a holiday number especially for my Christmas cassette. The production and distribution were in the hands of Ed and Ignit from the Ding Dong label. The first edition of Oscar's X-Mas Carols was released shortly before Christmas 1984, on my own Noel label. I never received any payment or sales figures from Ding Dong, so I have no idea how many copies of that first edition were sold. That's one of the reasons why in 1985 I decided to take on the distribution myself. Plus, I'd just gotten hold of a rubber stamp that was suitable for stamping serial numbers. That gave me the idea of producing a limited-edition, numbered cassette. I'd package the cassette attached to a picture frame containing a beautiful black-and-white photo of my sister's hand, holding some of my parent's Christmas ornaments. My friend Theo Kamphuis not only took the picture, he also had to develop it 350 times, because that was the edition's print run. We spent two evenings assembling the 350 packages, each containing a framed photograph plus a cassette. The artistic-looking result disguised the fact that the project was a financial catastrophe. I barely recouped half of the 4000 guilders in production costs. I had well and truly learned my lesson and decided to stop producing cassettes. However, in 1987 I started to get the itch again, so I invited a large group of international and Dutch artists to send me numbers for my third Christmas cassette. This time, to cut costs, I did everything except the cover design on my own. The cover was mimeographed, and I reproduced the cassettes myself. And so, Is That You Santa Claus was created, in a limited and numbered edition of 100, made for approximately one-tenth of the production costs of its forerunner.

In 1988 I got a full-time job and had little time for my Christmas label. Subsequently, cassettes lost more and more ground to the encroaching CD format. A fourth cassette would therefore never materialize! It wasn't until 2010 that Oscar's X-mas Carols volume 4 would be released, in the form of a CD entitled Christmas Cover Up. The songs on that CD were covers of not-so-well-known Christmas numbers, performed by such artists as Hunter Complex, Jaap Boots, Eddy de Clercq, and Kaat Hellings. The music, however, was much less experimental than on the cassettes.

Now, in 2017, there's a vinyl version of Oscar's X-mas Carols. For this album's tracklist, its compilers Jordi Serrano and Oscar Smit made a personal selection from the three previous cassettes. In this, they were unfortunately hindered by the limited playing time available on a long-playing record. Of the fifteen tracks on this LP, seven come from the Netherlands. I've remained in contact with many of the original artists and was able to track down the rest on Facebook. Welcome to the digital era. I wish you much listening pleasure with these tracks from the previous, analog century!

Help Yourself, known to their fans as The Helps', were an English rock band of the early 70s.

Formed in London, originally as a backing band for singer-songwriter Malcolm Morley, who had left Sam Apple Pie and been signed as a solo act by Famepushers. The band was assembled by John Eichler who, as well as working for Famepushers, was a production manager at Strand Cosmetics.

The eponymous debut album Help Yourself was recorded from late 1970 to early 1971. Malcolm Morley, (guitars/keyboards/vocals) wrote all the songs on this album, which was recorded with another former Sam Apple Pie member Dave Charles (drums/percussion/vocals), ex member of Monday Morning Glory Band, Richard Treece (guitars/vocals/harmonica) and former Growth member Ken Whaley (bass). The album was recorded before the band had played a gig.

Snot is a Southern California American Rock Band, USA. The band was formed, in 1995, by founding members vocalist Lynn Strait along with guitarist Mikey Doling. Snot built a incredible following with their powerful performances on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles, selling out every concert they played. After a record company bidding war Snot eventually signed to Geffen records, finding a home with the likes of Guns N' Roses, Nirvana, and White Zombie and many more iconic names.

Snot released their memorable debut studio album Get Some in 1997, getting rave reviews from critics, and touring with iconic names such as Ozzy Osbourne, System Of a Down, Megadeth, Pantera, Tool, to name a few. Then in the midst of an exploding music career, tragedy struck. Sadly their vocalist/charismatic front man Lynn Strait was killed in a car accident on December 11, 1998, along with his dog Dobbs (who appeared on the cover of the album). This completely crushed the band members and led to the band disbanding following the untimely death of their brother in arms and vocalist.

Snot's music is a mix of rough around the edge rock 'n' roll and fun funky hardcore punk-rock, especially on the standout songs Snot', Deadfall', Joyride', The Box'. Get Some was produced by T-Ray who has worked many great rock bands.

MAGMA, one of the most influential of all French bands, will release the Retrospektï 3xLP collection, including Retrospektï Volume I & II and Retrospektï Volume III via Southern Lord .

The collection will be made available as a limited pressing of 1500 hand-numbered copies, remastered by Brad Boatright, including original artwork by Eva Nahon, also including the classic comic strip by Solé, Dister, and Gotlib depicting MAGMA's trials and tribulations.
 
The first ten years of MAGMA were celebrated on three memorable evenings in June 1980 at the Olympia theatre in Paris. This retrospective, reuniting most of the musicians who had performed in the group, was issued as two albums, the Retrospektï I & II double-LP and Retrospektï III LP. Issued first, Retrospektï III comprises three titles. "Retrovision" is a long piece in the style of the album Attahk, in which the vocalists Stella Vander, Guy Khalifa, and Maria Popkiewicz turn in a blazing performance over a driving rhythm section. There is a supercharged version of "Hhai," in which the trio of Lockwood, Paganotti, and Widemann works miracles. And finally, "La Dawotsin," where, in a more muted register, the voice of Christian Vander triumphs through its mastery and profound sensibility.

Recorded, like Retrospektï III, during the soirees at Olympia in June 1980, Retrospektï I & II is an absolutely fundamental album in which "Theusz Hamtaahk" -- the first movement of the trilogy of the same name -- is presented for the first time. The second and third movements, "Wurdah Itah" and "Mekanik Destruktiw Komandoh," were of course already well known. Although played in concert since 1974, Christian Vander had waited for years before recording it for posterity as he wanted every note to be as beautiful, magical, essential and definitive as possible. It is with the same respect for his music that he releases here the most successful version of "Mekanik Destruktiw Komandoh," considered outstanding on account of two incredible improvisation from Bernard Paganotti and Didier Lockwood. Klaus Blasquiz, who did not perform on Retrospektï III, is the lead vocalist on this version - and justifiably so, since he was indeed the MAGMA singer who first sang these two masterworks.
 
There's no doubt about it, MAGMA has left a legacy of music that defies any of the standard and convenient classifications of rock, operating instead in a realm of their own creation. Southern Lord looks forward to being part of their ever-evolving story...

Lysergic Saviours: Kicking arse for the Lord since time began!

Beggars Opera was a band from Scotland that managed a handful of albums from 1970 to 1980. Of course, it's their first three albums that their reputation lies on: Act One (1970), Waters of Change (1971), and Pathfinder (1972). With Waters of Change, the band added Virginia Scott, a rare example of a female Mellotron player (other example going to Angela Allen of Carmen). Organ duty of course, still remains to Alan Park, who decided to ditch the classical themes of Act One. The results being this best album of Beggars Opera and an excellent example of early British progressive rock.

Waters of Change is an album truly deserving to be in your collection.

Blind delon surprised last year to everyone with their sold out debut ep 'edouard', a work full of darkwave soul but with a very fresh and modern sound as well. this second work 'maniaque' just confirm them as one of the best french acts of the alternative scene, again we are going to find post- punk classical influences updated on a very attractive and personal way, but as well low tempo minimal techno monsters and even naïf pop. a sure super seller. all tracks has been remastered by eric van wonterghem at prodam studio (berlin).

Electric City is quite a mixed bag, a batch of vocal tunes sports the album's most overtly rock-oriented, groove-based arrangements, and vocals by Downes himself. To say that Downes' vocal gifts are not on par with his head-turning instrumental talents would be putting it kindly, but there are plenty of other sides to this outing. Such tunes as "Crush Hour" and "Dawn Until Dawn" bear heads that show the influence of '60s post-bop jazz, interwoven with modal improv sections bordering on free-blowing freakouts.

Beauty And The Beast is the latest in the series of special limited edition David Bowie 7' picture discs being released and will be out on 5th January 2018, almost 40 years to the day of its original release on 6th January 1978.

Beauty And The Beast was the second single taken from the album Heroes, the second of the Berlin Trilogy albums recorded with Tony Visconti and Brian Eno at the legendary Hansa Studios in Berlin. The track also features Robert Fripp of King Crimson on lead guitar, who claims that his guitar was all recorded in his first take.

The A-Side of the 7' picture disc features the track with newly remastered audio, mixed by long-time Bowie collaborator Tony Visconti. The AA-Side is a previously unreleased live version of Blackout, recorded live at Deutschlandhalle, Berlin on 16th May 1978 during the ISOLAR II tour.

This special collector's edition electronically reproduced stereo 7' single (only 200 copies), comes in two fantastic coloured vinyl options (100 x red vinyl and 100 x purple vinyl). A refreshingly new take on mono to stereo conversion. Elvis fans growing up in the 1960's and 1970's unwittingly listened to his 1950's catalogue in electronically reprocessed stereo, love it or loathe, it was pretty much all there was back then unless you could afford to track down expensive mono copies. To better understand where the electronically reprocessed stereo versions originate from, we need to go back to 1961, at which point RCA had begun the process of taking Elvis' 1950's mono masters and converting them into a stereo sounding effect. By 1960 when Elvis returned from the army, he was recording in true stereo and as far as RCA were concerned, mono was a thing of the past. You just need to listen to the sound quality of the 1960 'Living Stereo' version of the 'Elvis Is Back' album, to appreciate just how much the recording industry had moved on in just two years. Such was the demand for stereo records in the early 1960's most major labels had created their own process for converting mono into stereo or 'fake' stereo as it became known, with some labels producing better results than others. Opinions on Elvis' 1960's electronically reprocessed stereo versions are mixed, with some recordings making the transition from mono to stereo effect better than others. Some DJ's actually preferred playing the electronically reprocessed stereo versions, believing they gave a wider fuller sound on the dancefloor. By late 1970's, RCA had once again begun to re-issue original mono masters, giving many fans their first opportunity to hear how these tracks were originally issued. By the time compact discs had arrived on the scene in the 1980's, electronically reprocessed stereo was well and truly dead and buried. Very few electronically reprocessed stereo recordings ever made it onto a digital format and the few that did are now highly collectible. Recorded at RCA Studio 1, New York on the 30th of January 1956, My Baby Left Me is a driving powerhouse rockabilly masterpiece with a real Sun Records vibe to it (produced by Steve Scholes with Elvis on vocals and acoustic guitar, Scotty Moore on electric guitar, Bill Black on bass and D.J. Fontana on drums). Our flip side Blue Moon Of Kentucky is another rockabilly classic which first appeared as the opposite side to That's All Right (Sun 209) in 1955 (Elvis' first single). Blue Moon Of Kentucky was recorded on the 7th of July 1954 at Sun Records (produced by Sam Phillips with Elvis on vocals and acoustic guitar, Scotty Moore on electric guitar and Bill Black on bass). Both tracks have been painstakingly re-engineered to create a stereo effect sound. The result is a bigger, sharper sound that jumps straight outta the grooves at ya! A refreshingly new take on mono to stereo conversion. Elvis fans growing up in the 1960's and 1970's unwittingly listened to his 1950's catalogue in electronically reprocessed stereo, love it or loathe, it was pretty much all there was back then unless you could afford to track down expensive mono copies. To better understand where the electronically reprocessed stereo versions originate from, we need to go back to 1961, at which point RCA had begun the process of taking Elvis' 1950's mono masters and converting them into a stereo sounding effect. By 1960 when Elvis returned from the army, he was recording in true stereo and as far as RCA were concerned, mono was a thing of the past. You just need to listen to the sound quality of the 1960 'Living Stereo' version of the 'Elvis Is Back' album, to appreciate just how much the recording industry had moved on in just two years. Such was the demand for stereo records in the early 1960's most major labels had created their own process for converting mono into stereo or 'fake' stereo as it became known, with some labels producing better results than others. Opinions on Elvis' 1960's electronically reprocessed stereo versions are mixed, with some recordings making the transition from mono to stereo effect better than others. Some DJ's actually preferred playing the electronically reprocessed stereo versions, believing they gave a wider fuller sound on the dancefloor. By late 1970's, RCA had once again begun to re-issue original mono masters, giving many fans their first opportunity to hear how these tracks were originally issued. By the time compact discs had arrived on the scene in the 1980's, electronically reprocessed stereo was well and truly dead and buried. Very few electronically reprocessed stereo recordings ever made it onto a digital format and the few that did are now highly collectible. Recorded at RCA Studio 1, New York on the 30th of January 1956, My Baby Left Me is a driving powerhouse rockabilly masterpiece with a real Sun Records vibe to it (produced by Steve Scholes with Elvis on vocals and acoustic guitar, Scotty Moore on electric guitar, Bill Black on bass and D.J. Fontana on drums). Our flip side Blue Moon Of Kentucky is another rockabilly classic which first appeared as the opposite side to That's All Right (Sun 209) in 1955 (Elvis' first single). Blue Moon Of Kentucky was recorded on the 7th of July 1954 at Sun Records (produced by Sam Phillips with Elvis on vocals and acoustic guitar, Scotty Moore on electric guitar and Bill Black on bass). Both tracks have been painstakingly re-engineered to create a stereo effect sound. The result is a bigger, sharper sound that jumps straight outta the grooves at ya! Graham Bond died in May of 1974 and it seemed the world of music forgot about one of the most interesting and legendary artists to come out of the early 60's music scene. Graham was multi-talented, mastering the alto sax, piano and the organ. His vocals and phrasing are truely one of a kind. Graham experimented with various forms of R & B but these particular albums are totally spiritual and mystical. Check out "The Magician" , "Moving Towards the Light" and "Time to Die". Some of the most moving pieces of music I've ever heard. Graham was experimeting with a form of new age music long before anyone had ever even tried to.

Third album by British Prog band Jackson Heights formed by bassist / vocalist Lee Jackson following the folding of the Nice in 1970. The band was basically a trio with guitarist John McBurnie and keyboardist Brian Chatton. Ex-King Crimson drummer Mike Giles plays the drum parts and several other musicians also help out. On this album they played original material written mostly by the guitarist, with one tune revisiting the Nice days. The band had a unique sound and style, which combined different musical influences from Folk to Jazz, and lost nothing of its charm in time. Mostly forgotten in the years gone by, this reissue is a nice reminder of how good the band was. Recommended!

Paladin's first album has always lived in the shadow of it's magnificent successor "Charge". "Paladin" certainly has indications that the band were capable of producing some really good music. The opening track, "Bad times" has some fine organ work by Pete Soley. "Dance of the cobra", an inspiring instrumental track, "Third world" indulges in a form of rap, long before that style became popular, predating even Aerosmith's "Walk this way" by some years & "Flying high" is a softer piece, an early hint of "Mix your minds with the moonbeams".

Check this out if you know the genre of prog well and want something new.

If you like semi hard, blues guitar oriented jam rock then look no farther, grab this one if you can. This puppy rocks from track 1 through track 7 with no let up in between. All seven tracks are toe tappers Miss Purdy.

Here we have some excellent, prog. influenced blues rock with extended guitar jams, some elec. violin, and a nice diversity of material with imaginative songwriting. The album starts off with arguably the best cut. The hard rocking "If I Could Keep From Laughing" is quickly followed by the innovative Native-American flavored "Medicine Weasel".
