After a devastating opening salvo of 19 modernist rave mutations on a double tape pack for Sneaker Social Club, Minder lands on Hypercolour with another 19 cybernetic fever dreams still reeling from the open season NRG of hardcore.
If you need to understand where Minder wants to take you, strap in for the labyrinth narrative of ‘Knotted’, a smudged, 15-minute breakbeat suite barrelling through lurid dystopian street scenes with only a blown-out bass sprite as a guide. Throughout Sanctuary, bass is the constant when all else is chaos. It comes in thick, warped Reese tones on ‘Simulated Hunt’, gets twisted out through angry filters on ‘Popcorn Lover’, comes on wobbly in true 2-step style underneath grimey garage anti-anthem ‘Ard’.
There’s a lot to take in across the spread of Sanctuary. It’s the sound of every rave genre slowly digested over 30-plus years, until the lactic acid metabolises every snare rush, every searing lead line, every chipmunk vocal lick, and everything gets mashed up and spat back out into a gnarly signal chain at the flash point of inspiration. The time taken is key – this is the sound of a life in front of the speaker stack manifesting in something too wild and weird to be derivative. You’ll hear snatches of familiarity thrown into unfamiliar contexts, but for all the detectable lineage, Minder’s sound is unsettling in its originality.
Dislodged ragga jungle techno, muffled hardcore nightmares, hard n’ haggard acid trance, junked up jump up – you could write an essay on the sounds you can spot and the way they’ve been twisted. Aside from the omnipresent low-end, it’s the unflinching honesty of Korron’s repeat appearances on the mic throughout which bring Minder’s disturbing patchwork into focus. For all the futurism attached to these sounds, it’s also caked in a very human filth which can only come from this earth. The roots run deep, and the fruit is rotten, and isn’t that how it should be?

Although devoid of lyrics ‘The Only Way Is Through’, brims with feeling and is the perfect climax. Here’s a record full of hope and promise. Manipulating an array of judiciously chosen synths, PG shapes a vast interstellar space. Over the 8 minute trip, a palette of tight drum patterns come knocking, pleasantly surprising you with each visit. With time on her side, the producer gives each sonic element its moment in the spotlight. And girl do they shine! Where there is light, there is darkness and PG plays with both moods to perfection. The Mumbai-based musician’s solo project, NATE08, treads the groove-oriented territories of funk, r&b, and house – with his elegantly spun productions firmly rooted in dance music's glorious heritage while imbued with a future-facing production gloss.

It's still hard to keep up with all of Burnski's many different labels, but we're not complaining. This one, Constant Black, mixes up things with a tech and minimal twist and next to do so is Daniel Akbar. 'What' soon wins you over with its kinetic and infectious drum programming and smart samples - a phased vocal and a twisted synth lead. 'Retreat' gets more physical - the drums bang with an old-school flavour and hint of tribalism. 'Listen' is a big fat tech roller with low slung bass and 'This One' rounds out with some brilliant drum, hits and brain-frying bass sounds. Pow pow, what a record.

Geography has always been about feelings. Our next record is a special one with lots of them. Several years in the making. A local affair, a Sorgenfri/Sofielund/Gamla Väster/Annelund affair. Geography returns with what will be remembered as probably the best record of 2017, a mini album full of deeply rooted house music from total newcomer Fyodor the DJ, put on wax by Geography straight outta Malmö.
The artwork is done by the artists mother, Margareta. The record is released in two versions, one normal and one special edition, limited to 50 copies. The latter is screen printed by Margareta Heijkenskjöld Holmgren in her studio in Malmö.

For Hooversound’s ninth release, SHERELLE and NAINA welcome San Francisco-based DJ and producer Chrissy to the family for the label’s debut album release. Coming out on the 27th October, ‘Physical Release’ blends elements of ravey techno, house, and jungle that have run through his previous work. The final result is an exploration of what our scene’s physical spaces mean and how they feed into themes of politics, family, connection and joy.
Speaking about the album Chrissy says,
"These songs were inspired by our scene's physical spaces: the warehouses, clubs, record stores, late night cafes, lofts, and friends' living rooms that let us connect to each other, experience the joy and wonder of dance music culture, and find our family.
I've seen these spaces gradually decimated by cops, property developers, cynical corporate brand partners, irresponsible promoters, and a global pandemic. The end result is a dance music culture that feels more online and disconnected, culminating in over a year without any physically shared spaces.
Encouragingly, I've seen many in our community finally acknowledge a painful reality: our scene has failed to live up to its utopian ideals, and to protect, value, and uplift all of our peers. No matter how fondly we remember our first raves, the culture was and is broken, and it's our job to fix it.
So while this album may feel like a paean to a bygone era, it is more a reflection of optimism about the future: a hope that we can rebuild our scene and our communal physical spaces with better priorities and better values, so that everybody can experience the euphoria, joy, transcendence, and physical release of the dancefloor."
The album opens with a quote from artist, author, and transgender activist Edie Fake, who also designed the artwork for ‘Physical Release’. A fellow Chicago-to-California transplant, Edie’s previous work has dealt largely with physical spaces, including historical queer nightlife spaces.

Originally from Normandy now residing in the country's capital, French DJ and producer Adam Boufeldja (aka Adam BFD) has been making a serious name for himself, having put out a string of self-released singles and curating his own self-titled Youtube channel.
Adam’s tracks have always been vivid, detailed portraits; drawing from memories and influences from around the world, and his latest EP is no exception; using his eclectic tastes to produce a record truly unique, and brimming with personality.
‘I’ll be walking’ meanders through an always evolving city, creating space and a sense of an otherwise chaotic and fleeting world. Big Ever is the new moniker of Sydney born, Berlin based music producer Thomas McAlister. ‘Holly Grove’ evokes a sense of mystery and intrigue with it’s celestial rhodes and flute flourishes, before being joined by syncopated bruk-beats and the alluring vocals of Sarah Zoyaya, who’s tones entwine with some wild synth playing and twisting polyrhythms. Final single ‘I Haven’t Recovered From Last Night With You’ entrances the listener with it’s hypnotic saturated percussion, swirling vocals and reverb-laced key stabs. Creating visions of endless and vast expanses, it shows Alvaro’s ability to weave textures and melody to incredible effect.

Emerging from the shadows with 2021s ‘Bring Me Sunshine’ album, electro duo Sons of Slough see their debut 12” back in print via Perko’s FELT label. A quiet highlight of turn of the millennium-era British dance music that takes cues from the New York and Detroit schools of thought, ‘Live EP’ is rough, heavy and proves just as effective on the dancefloor two decades later. The Sons played shows with Richie Hawtin, Two Lone Swordsmen, Dave Clarke, The Chemical Brothers and more, often performing (as the title might suggest) in a live context. Indeed, the A1 cut ‘Snares and Temptations’ was a regular fixture, reportedly taking the roof off the place at the first Dedbeat Weekender as well as some of the worlds ‘less congenial establishments’. It's a sharp, low-end laden assault on the senses making great use of a distorted vocal sample and Drexciyan-like drum programming. The other three cuts are equally as powerful, vocoders and 'squelchy messes of clicks and whirrs' aplenty. Glaswegian producer Jai Dee follows up from his hard-hitting debut on 1Ø Pills Mate with a devastatingly beautiful and visceral blend of breaks, jungle and emotive leaning electronica.
Opening track ‘Coming Up Again’ covers a range of responses over it’s seven minute duration; from it’s front-running introduction, radiating keys and its finale, featuring alien electronics futuristic enough to send you straight to space. ‘Tears In Your Voice’ is simply put, a stone-cold banger; with a hint of humour sprinkled on top for good measure. If you want to incite a riot and be at risk of being sued for whiplash, this will surely do the business.
The B side kicks off with ‘We Can Have It All’ an ultra-kinetic sound that mixes choppy breaks, soaring pads and Jai’s own signature keys, before the EP comes to a close with the unforgettable ‘Hold Love By The Hand’. Stuttering percussion and dense stabs float amongst cloud-like pads, moving effortlessly throughout a star-lit sky; a kaleidoscope of shifting emotions rushing back and forth bringing to close another deeply stirring record from a seriously talented producer.

Following from a.s.o. 's self-titled LP, we have a set of remixes taking their trip-hop torch songs in new and different directions.
Under his Lew E moniker, Lewie Day takes 'Go On' for a trip to trance-town. Brooding minor key menace as Alia Seror-O'Neil's melancholic vocal gets twisted into strange shapes, eventually becoming an instrument of its own. Mutating from the organic to the synthetic during an adrenaline-racing breakdown. Day sounds like he's having a great deal of fun playing with and defying the conventions of the genre.
Maara explores a similar space on her re-rub of 'My Baby's Got It Out For Me'. Once again, Seror-O'Neil's voice is flexed and warped, spinning around the stereo field, as emotive as she ever sounds but more abstracted. Gossamer light with a heavyweight trance chassis - an iron fist in a lace glove.
Rising star Cousin moves in an earthier and more dubwise fashion on his remix of 'Falling Under.' His trademark shuffling, layered percussion comes with gnarly electronics and blissed-out synths. All the while, that vocal refrain leads us through the bong smoke toward the light. A work of restraint and release, the perfect fit for a.s.o.
Purelink's redo of 'Rain Down' is closer stylistically to the original. Bubbling synth-bass grooves atop a breakbeat, the vocal chopped and diced tastefully. Balearic street soul vibes, a hypnotic and heady five minutes. Beautiful business.

Dorisburg is Bossmusik regular with four releases on the label under his belt. For this EP he is joined by Efraim Kent - the newest member of the Boss family. Dorisburg and Efraim have many things in common, not just the previous records the pair has produced, but more importantly they unite in a shared love for intricate drum patterns, as well as being masters of trippy spiraling sounds.
For the 10th installment in the Bossmusik collection, the Swedish duo goes all in with four deep, yet funky, expertly produced tech house cuts. The tenth release on the label will be released exactly ten years after the first record was released the 13th of October. The A-side opens with Further.
A penetrating kick keeps chopped up drums and a spitting vocal sample in order and when the brooding bassline gets to close, hypnotic x-rays twists the narrative. On A2 the boys are clearly letting you know it is playtime; opening with a funk-driven beat and tumbling drums, this track is nothing less than a funhouse full of twirling tocsins - Attjo is certainly nothing to sneeze at.
B1, Cave Gossip, is a low-slung affair with an electro-infused bassline; here a deep groove takes you on a hallucinogenic underground journey and a nonchalant vocal sample grows into a warped echoing choir. Final track Skrattack is where the drum-loving duo puts the full spotlight on the percussion: complex rhythm patterns provide a spaced-out backdrop, attacked by what sounds like giddy little extraterrestrial critters, ready to mess up the party in the most charming of ways.
