For a year, in 2015, Matthew Sage (aka M. Sage) cataloged near-daily recordings made with a very narrow creative constraint; electric guitar and a few pedals, all recorded and mixed directly to cassette 4-track. Eschewing the often complex studio gadgetry and computer editing that he relies on for his primary project, Free Dust became a respite that offered room for technique to fall away and for pure expression to surface. He collected and released more than two-and-a-half hours of this material throughout the year as quarterly digital downloads; this body of work was then re-released as a double-CD in 2019 on his now-defunct label Patient Sounds. Now, Past Inside the Present presents a new collection of Free Dust material, the first proper LP for this project.

FD serves up a prime cut of soulful House with 'Ribs'

Inspired by recent influences as well as years spent in Europe, versatile Drum & Bass producer FD teams up with Maverick Soul and Issac Rosie to create a classy soulful House bubbler - Ribs - one of the highlights of his debut album Better Days on The North Quarter.

To complete this 10” appendix to the LP, Byron the Aquarius (Eglo) is enlisted to remix the stand out track Ice Cream off of FD’s 2017 EP on the Amsterdam based label. The man of the moment takes it in a totally new direction in a freeform Detroit workout.

The Underwater Island is a collection of four tracks from Grenoble based producer Denis Morin. Philosopher, gardener, father and sonic explorer. Our friendship dates back over a decade, with some of this music first shared during a visit to Glasgow almost 5 years to the day - when 12th Isle the label was but an idea. For ISLE009, Vague Imaginaires gifts us with autobiographical field recordings, FM synthesis and skilled sound design inspired by the ocean and the Drac river which flows through the mountains of his city. Harmonising natural sound sources with digital realms, he navigates through minimalism, ambient techno and flashes of dub inspiration. Morin combines these musical ideas with Roland TR-8, 303 emulations, hydrophone recordings and vocal fragments from Tunisia, Morocco and Vercors Massif.

Day one is the first Asierhans’s EP, which consist in bunch of ideas collected during the last year, formed by 2 club-ready tunes inspired in a sound between House and Techno as well as sounds from Nu Disco, Balearic/Ambient in other tracks as Seville or Aderall. This is also the first reference of Noreple, a London/Madrid based label.

Roots Underground is at its 6th release, with this new sophisticated EP.
A collab between italian producer, but Berlin based, Luca Murgia a.k.a. TWO THOU and the jazz ensemble HOBBY HORSE, composed by Dan Kinzelman, Joe Rehmer and Stefano Tamborrino.

Feats are very present throughout the whole record, like in the exotic broken beat opener THE CHASE (A1), where Eric Demuro bass licks intertwine with Kinzelman's flute and Two Thou beats.
INDIA SCI-FI (A2) is a sultry ambient painting, enriched by balearic flavours, courtesy of Mike Matias, sending the listener in a dreamy altered state.
The B side opens with a collaborative rework, CASCADE (B1) by Two Thou with Brooklin's Eric Porter, better known as Afrikan Sciences of an already released track by HOBBY HORSE (Helm, 2018)
Porter lays the drums and Two Thou morphs the hypnotic double bass/bass clarinet loop in a solid organic "house" track, with deep and dubby vibes, that will be appreciated by picky clubgoers everywhere.
The EP includes also the original version of CASCADE ( B2)

TEEBS veröffentlicht Vinyl Reissue seines kultisch verehrten Debüts und Durchbruchsalbums „Ardour“ an, welches vor 10 Jahren erstmals via Brainfeeder veröffentlicht wurde!

Am 11. Oktober 2010 veröffentlichte Brainfeeder das Debütalbum eines 23-jährigen Ex-Skaters, Malers und Musikproduzenten aus Chino Hills namens Teebs (wirklicher Name Mtendere Mandowa). Der Titel "Ardour" bedeutet großer Enthusiasmus, Liebe oder Leidenschaft und war eine treffende Beschreibung für seine von Natur aus warmen, üppig texturierten Beats. Er ist ein unbestrittener Klassiker im Brainfeeder-Kanon und gilt weithin als ein wesentliches Kapitel in dem sich ständig weiterentwickelnden Puzzle der globalen "Beat-Szene”. Auf „Ardour“ (10th Anniversary Edition) finden sich neben den Hits wie „Why Like This“ oder „Gordon“ sechs neue Songs auf der D-Seite, die bis heute unveröffentlicht blieben. Teebs, der seine Wurzeln beim "My Hollow Drum"-Kollektiv, Dublab und Low End Theory hat, ist eine feste Größe in der Musikszene von Los Angeles. First full release from Paul David Gillman on Ten Lovers Music and it's a big one with his debut album Secret Garden under his Red Earth Design artist name. The eagle eyed amongst you will already know Paul has previously guested on Memories by Caruso (TLM022) playing the flute and flugelhorn and also supplied a dark jazzy dub for the same release. Secret Garden has eight tracks over two 12" and will only be available on a limited vinyl run, styles range from dark jazzy house, broken beats to ambient, something for everyone in fact.

DAUW present the release of What the Fog, the second album of David Allred & Peter Broderick. The album is a follow-up of their first full-length LP Find the Ways, which was released through Erased Tapes in 2017.

The music itself was originally composed as a soundtrack for an 11-hours slow motion journey in the Louvre museum in Paris. The title, #monalisa, can be interpreted as a new way of perceiving art through technology and social media such as Twitter or Instagram. The movie is directed by Jennifer Anderson and Vernon Lott and tries to make us more aware of the presence of technology in our lives as well as the way we experience an exhibition or art itself. The album is a 42-minutes extraction of the 11-hours journey they went through. Each track is built in a way that makes it possible for the listener to travel from one place to the other, as if you were walking in the museum yourself. In that way, the record can even be perceived as a music documentary.

Being completely instrumental, What the Fog distinguishes itself from their first album in which the voices of both artists held a central place. Nevertheless, in line with an earlier observation from Clash Magazine, the music still combines minimalism and serenity to construct intense pieces of music.

Born in Maine, raised in Oregon, Peter Broderick learned to play several instruments such as piano, banjo and violin. In 2007 he joined the Danish ensemble Efterklang on their tour and had numerous collaborations with artists such as Machinefabriek and Nils Frahm. His most recent release Blackberry was released this August through Erased Tapes. It marked his first vocal album in 5 years and once again showed the variety in his ever growing repertoire.

In a relatively short period of time, Portland-based musician and multi-instrumentalist David Allred showed his songwriting capabilities through several releases on Oscarson and Erased Tapes. Besides his own music, he played as a session musician for several artists and ensembles such as Heather Woods Broderick, Masayoshi Fujita and The Beacon Sound Choir. His most recent album Felt the Transition sees the light late December 2020 through Erased Tapes.

Kristian Craig Robinson, aka Capitol K, is a multi-instrumentalist and record producer with a long history in London’s most interesting under-the-radar music places and spaces. With a musical story like his, you can expect side streams. New record ‘Birdtrapper’ is “the sound of an initiation rave in a utopian hidden village”, and his latest exploration of Mediterranean audio mythos following from ’Goatherder’ (2018). The six track mini-album was similarly formed from ritualistic improvisations performed in Malta (where Capitol K was born), using home-made flutes, reed pipe, bamboo percussion, drum machine, bass guitar, but this time features a wider use of synthesizers, with the alternative dance floor in mind. Where ‘Goatherder’ was an awakening of genetic primitivism, ‘Birdtrapper’ is an evocation of sonic bird callers, proto-rave abandon, ambient resonance and an ecstatic captive state, along with the previous work's visions of hunters, temples and scrub land music
‘Goatherder’ caused a quiet kind of quake and was beloved by The Quietus, BBCR3 and 6Music. Vinyl Factory described it as “like a series of manipulated field recordings that have an ancient, ritualistic quality … Goatherder shimmers with Balearic strangeness, rooted in an earthy outer-national dance music tradition”. For the last seven years K has been behind the consoles at the heavily influential Total Refreshment Centre, recording and mixing records with the likes of Trash Kit, The Comet Is Coming, Rozi Plain, Alabaster DePlume, Dry Cleaning, Flamingods Cykada, Ibibio Sound Machine, BAS JAN and John Johanna. It’s not just recording. He’s also become an influential if understated mentor to a new wave of producers and bands. His experience in studio environments is long and storied, including stints at Studio Plateaux on an island in the middle of the Thames and in the Royal Symphonia’s squatted rehearsal rooms. Capitol K has released seven albums and the 'Birdtapper EP' follows a legacy of influential releases on early 2000s electronica labels including Planet Mu and XL. Aside this he also runs the record label Faith & Industry. It’s a friends and family, love not money affair and he has released music by Champagne Dub, John Johanna, Super Best Friends Club, Blue House & Clémentine March.

The second instalment of David Augusts 99CHANTS comes in the form of Adisceda, the debut offering of 21-year-old UK Producer Louis Sterling.

Louis talents initially caught David’s attention through a demo, which showcased Louis’ impressive musical maturity and his ability to express complex emotions through his music. Through an in-depth correspondence over the next months, Adisceda slowly found it’s shape as chant#02.

Conceived during the mourning process for a close family member that passed away in 2016, Adisceda was freely written as a continuous prayer of reminiscence: “Like a photograph, capturing a close memory as it gradually fades away, becoming pale, faint and less visible”, as Louis recalls “Even at times of desperately trying to recollect the close moments that once meant the world to me.”
Yet, Adisceda captures the overcoming of grief and loss – A healing process. Beautiful, hopeful, pure and transcendent.

The record will be released as chant#02 on a 12” heavyweight vinyl mastered by ambient specialist Rafael Anton Irisarri at Black Knoll Studios NY in a full-cover designed by Colin D. Fletcher.

Lontano Da Dove? by DsorDNE is a four-track LP written and recorded between 1996 and 1999 - at Acqualuce studio in Alpignano, Torino - by the mind of Marco Milanesio and Luciano Gelormino. Additional guitars were provided by Danilo Beltrame on piano zeroquattro (extended) and vocals by Snowdonia founder Cinzia La Fauci.

It was conceived to be released at the time but only a few promo copies were distributed. After about 20 years, the original recordings, which were considered lost, were found by Marco, who remastered them in his O.F.F studio and brought it back to life.

The all album is an organic work, who mash spoken ethereal voices and dubby basslines with tr-909 beats, borrowing elements from trip hop, techno and industrial.

As a project, Line Gate has been undergoing a slow, steady transformation, much like the longform drone works that have come to characterise it. What began as a band in 2010 and most recently surfaced as a solitary hurdy-gurdy resonance on 'Den' in 2017 has now flourished into ‘Apex’, Michal Vaľko’s latest album. 'Apex', simultaneously an album about perceiving the beauty around us, about sacredness, and a meditation on a state of timelessness and seeming non-action, is divided into two 30-minute pieces.

The gently modulating drone of the hurdy-gurdy remains present during the first piece, along with its very characteristic (almost psychedelic) resonances and overtones. However, the listener's ear is almost immediately drawn to another sound source - the human voice. 'Apex I' presents an interplay between these two instruments, which, strangely enough, are positioned in a similar space on the frequency spectrum. The result is a mind-bending interplay between the hurdy-gurdy and the voice; one weaving around the other in seemingly indeterminable patterns.

'Apex II' takes Vaľko’s explorations of the human voice even further: the hurdy-gurdy is withdrawn. Layers of voice, some processed, some raw, are the only building block here. A resonant layer of sampled voice, not dissimilar from the hurdy-gurdy, acts as an unstable, shifting sonic bed around which a gradually growing choir of voices orbits endlessly. Sibilants, consonants and vowels recited in mantra-like cycles form a non-linguistic vocal tapestry, one without explicit meaning, but imbued with huge emotional gravity and a unique enchanting quality.

The latest release on Francis Harris' Scissor & Thread is another exercise in subtlety and restraint, brought to us by the emerging talents of Nadia Khan. With little known about the artist, this release lets the sublime music do the talking. Title track 'In Gleam' is a beautifully evocative drift into ambient textures - rising pads and occasion bass tones combine to set an exquisite scene. 'Local Visit' is a collaboration with label boss Francis Harris, and features some of the trademark submerged rhythm and textures the label has become known for, unfolding its deep structures over the course of the track. 'Restless' sees label regular Alex Albrecht aka Melquíades (whose previous EP on S&T was received warmly) provide the Last Bells remix - again muted tones and rhythmic complexity glide under ethereal piano fragments and slowly evolving pad washes. 'Sorting Through' finds its groove early, a deadened kick unfolds into an urgent percussion creating a thick atmosphere of melancholia.
'Sunburnt' rounds out the physical release - ending how it started - with dreamy, smudged tones, and warm pads.

Lovely Music presents a reissue of Robert Ashley's Private Parts, originally issued in 1978. This newly mastered LP release is a must-have for aficionados as well as a perfect introductory work to Ashley's oeuvre. Among Lovely Music's first six releases, it came to be known as "the yellow record". No one had ever heard anything like it; Ashley presented an unvarnished exposition of the inner workings of a man's mind. And on the other side, those of a woman. These two episodes were the foundation for Ashley's seven-part opera, Perfect Lives (LCD 4917CD, 2017), which was performed by his ensemble throughout the 1980s and was completed for television broadcast by Britain's Channel Four. New arrangements of Perfect Lives, notably Varispeed's site-specific version, continue to intrigue and enchant.

Banoffee Pies Records begin their newest venture with a nod to the past. Introducing the latest Re-issue series focusing on old and lost gems. All five tracks originally produced in 1991-1994. Paradise 3001 aka Dr Nunu kicks things off with "Low Sun Archives". A deep dive into a small section of his outstanding back catalog which flaunts many layers of adventurous and floor ready music across Trance, Techno, Ambient, Dub and DownTempo.

The release starts with "Several Huge Yellow Snaplike Somethings" - A forgotten beach trance titan with instant teleportation to another time, neatly followed by the mesmerising sunset plod of "Low Sun In Dub" riding slow at 94 bpm. Keeping steady, the B side opens with the heavy drums and spaced pads of "Inner Rhythm (Bio Sensitive Mix)". The second injection of speed comes from the tribal percussion and heavy swirling sounds of "Beautification Bang Bang Bang (Daktari Mix)". The release then falls to a calming close with "Gates Of Eden". Waving you off the shore into the night. For all the moods. Love BPR x

The Growing Bin may have taken a hiatus for AW18, but don‘t be fooled into thinking this is a deciduous operation; after all the most powerful plantlife grows from below. Moving through the mulch, Basso traces the mycellium network from Hamburg‘s forests to the gentle slopes of Hasenheide, reconnecting with James Booth for the officially first Growing Bin release of 2019, or the first ever Glowing Pin Release.

Emerging from the green house with a heroic dose of wavy caps, the Mancunian export unleashes A-side sizzler ‚Space Echo Track‘, a little post-minimal magic for the peak time shamans. Built around the polyrhythmic patter of organic percussion, a touch of UK shuffle and the occasional blast of soundsystem bass, the track rolls and rattles from start to finish, tailor made for mid-set hypnosis. And while neon leadlines dance with disorienting sampler vox and papaya whistles summon the ethno-flute melodies, Booth brings us to a new level of future primitive consciousness, unlocking the Stargate once and for all. Onto the B-side and we‘re hurtling through galaxies, submerged in the entheogenic frequencies of‚ Locus of Control‘. Shimmering swathes of angelic synth vox and dreamlike pads drift freely, forming a
perfect counterbalance to the warp factor thrust and rasping resonance of the wormhole sequences. Beatless in space, ‚Locus‘ balances ambient techno and acid gurgle, cleansing your synapses like a Sven Vath warm down circa ‚94. This is music for the microdosers...

The first trees trembled with constant little oscillations, junctions -disjunctions. A red light started blinking, half-buried in the snow. Deep in the Siberian forest, in the middle of the night, a girl with a Morse key, was running a shortwave transmitter off a diesel generator, sending messages toward the ionosphere.

Her hands moved closer together, without touching. The pulsations became almost innumerable, incredibly elongated, hollowed out in the middle, like little pinnacles, but she knew that someone, thousands of miles away, would decipher her message. In a dimly lit hotel room, in a subterranean vault, he would build the bridges, channel the frequencies. Forming, unforming, and re-forming the lines, the waves, and the words."

Nikki Nairs latest release for the new label Muy Muy Limited, based between Mexico City and Ponderosa CA, is a rich and textured testament to his ever evolving production abilities.

Evoking feelings of fireside reflection, this 6-song EP flows from rich ambient orchestration to hypnotic hymns + rhythmic instrumentation, while maintaining an overall feeling that evades description.

This all seems fitting for the first release on a label the was born in a remote cabin high up the Sequoia National Monument.

It's only fair - in terms of universal balance - that stratospheric pop success should be countered with some gutter realism.

Release No.12 then is the smudged mascara of the morning after, still in the club, but definitely not ready to leave.
'Imperfection Turns Me On' is the sound of Nile Rodgers sharing a bag of flake with the local bell-ringing society, while B & E upsets the curtain twitchers with an uplifting lude-a-thon of swirling synth riffing and those ever-present Crooked and pin sharp beats.

SLEEPWALK unashamedly hogs a whole side, gently imposing its dub-soaked 15 minute self directly into your hypothalamus, with some Basic Channelesque transcendentalism, but from Yorkshire.

Dependably unbendable !

Rocksteady Disco's newest recruit is Eddie Logix. He's been at the heart of the Detroit underground for over 15 years, most recently with his Technically Yeah live hardware nights, a grip of ambient and hip-hop releases, engineering for Assemble Sound. He’s one half of left-field funk-hop duo Mega Powers with Pig Pen, and of 'BLKSHRK' alongside Blair French, who first appeared on Rocksteady Disco
back in 2016 on; For Todd.

Placebo Palace is Eddie's first solo dance EP, combining all of this experience into a diverse offering for discerning dance floors.

The EP leads with “Que Locos”, a tropical house banger driven by brass and Latin-Jazz piano. “Baby Girl” rounds out the A side, with a dusty R & B vocal sample coupled with a massive and unexpected bassline. The B side is darker and deeper, starting with the frantic Afro-Jazz-Deep House “Sunday Palaver”. Closing the EP is “Bottle Rocket”, a psychedelic surf rock-tinged disco-not-disco chugger, with live guitar by Daniel Monk and electric bass by stphn-b. More forward thinking music from Detroit via Rocksteady Disco!

The next release in the Phonica Special Edition series comes from Ukrainian duo Asyncronous who first came to our attention after hearing their critically acclaimed debut on Berlin label Slow Life, 'The Art of Fighting In A Dream'.
A Phonica favourite, it provided the soundtrack to many days in the shop throughout the year, culminating in its inclusion in our top ten Best Singles of 2019!

The Phonica Special Edition series is focused on one-off projects, special remixes or collaborations, highlighting music that is slightly left of the dance floor and pairing it with unique artwork.
This time featuring a beautiful piece by celebrated Ukrainian artist, Mykyta Storozhkov.
The pair initially joined forces in an effort to explore human imagination and life experiences through music, focussing on creating feelings and atmosphere rather than be constrained by genre limitations. The result on this EP is a hazy cosmic trip through their universe of synth swells, deep sub bass and meticulous percussion.

The journey begins on 'Padma Kirtanam' with a constant drone providing the backbone to a building tension scattered with drums. The tension releases and makes way for A2 'Shinkansen', a beautiful track with minimal drums and dubbed out synths which echo around the listener's ear. Closing the A side 'Volta' continues this aesthetic but adds a 4x4 kick drum upping the groove to a cosmic deep house jam.

'Avalanche' kicks off the B side of the record with a syncopated bass line and skitterish hi hats. The energy is at its highest level here and only stops to make way for the next track 'Blocks of Despair'. The tempo drops and drum hits reverberate above stretched out bass notes creating arguably the most heartfelt tune of the release.
The EP ends with 'Midnight Sun' an ambient excursion that invites you to drift off with Asyncronous into outer space.

Erste Warp-Reissue des zweiten Bibio-Albums "Hand Cranked" auf Vinyl, das 2006 auf Mush Records erschien und für Warp der Auslöser war, den Künstler zu signen. 2009 debütierte Bibio mit dem Klassiker "Ambivalence Avenue" dann auf Warp, der jetzt gleichzeitig auch auf Vinyl wiederveröffentlicht wird.

"Volta No Vento" is the result of a dialog between the French photographer Gilles Roudière and the French musician and composer Toàn initiated by IIKKI, between November 2019 and November 2020.

Toàn is Anthony Elfort, a French musician and composer from Brittany who has released previously his first release on the label eilean rec. in July 2017. After 3 years, this is his second opus splitted in two albums in Vinyl and CD for the experience of two reading with the book.

Gilles Roudière is a French photographer, born in 1976, who lives in Tours and Berlin. Member of the collective project Temps Zero and represented by In)(between gallery, Paris

Denovali presents the first cooperation album of the Italian composer, arranger, producer and guitarist ERALDO BERNOCCHI with the Berlin-based Japanese violinist, composer, electronic producer and TANGERINE DREAM member HOSHIKO YAMANE.

Born in Osaka, Hoshiko Yamane attended the University of Arts in Aichi. Her training destined her to be a violinist in classical music - later on she extended her practice to modern and pop music. In 2011 she joined the legendary band Tangerine Dream. In 2014 she started to release her first solo works.

During his long lasting career in several musical fields and genres London-based Eraldo Bernocchi worked with artists like Nils Petter Molvaer, Harold Budd, Thomas Fehlmann, Bill Laswell, Colin Edwin, Mark Stockhausen, Mick Harris or Robin Guthrie.

The first collaboration of both artists called "Mujo" combines traditional classical music with innovative electronic production techniques. The result is a coherent album that combines eight pieces to a timeless soundscape. The artwork of "Mujo" was arranged by the renowned media artist Petulia Mattioli.

MANSUR is the newly initiated project by Jason Kohnen (ex-The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble) joined by Dimitry El-Demerdashi (ex-Phurpa) and introducing Martina Hórvath on vocals. The sound of MANSUR navigates between the waters of musical fantasy and reality - it morphs and blends traditional instrumentation with modern day electronica.

Horváth, El-Demerdashi and Köhnen return to their otherworldly worldbuilding with their debut album ‘Karma’ on Denovali. MANSUR leads the listener into mystical and magical unknowns, that lie far past the realms of material perception.

For over two decades now, Martin Maischein has dedicated himself to all things meditative and adventurous on release for labels such as Editions Mego, Force Inc. or Position Chrome. Before making his distinctive sound heard on Techno floors around the world once more with a dubbed-out rework of Matrixxman's "Beacon" in the summer of 2017, Maischein released a small-run cassette release on Dominick Fernow's Hospital Productions under his Goner moniker. "Yogascum" will now be re-released on vinyl by the Switzerland-based Hallow Ground imprint. Maischein started working on "Yogascum" in 2014 with the intention of pushing the boundaries of his signature sound even further. Having received a grant by the Musicboard Berlin, he developed an audio-visual show around the three tracks at the core of "Yogascum", all of which feature instruments and sounds previously unheard of in Maischein's work. While the Berlin-based noise cellist UnterLala weaves her signature screeches into the pulsating drones of "YS-1" and "YS-3", zK member Mark Godwin on "YS-2" injects the subtle influence of a band whose records he has been working on as a mastering engineer, Coil.

Programmer is an exploration of the obscure but iconic sound of the Solton Programmer 24. A synthesizer referred to by some as the “Ultimate Italo Disco Machine”. Vancouver’s Corben pairs this strange and beautiful machine with a Mellotron and a Roland SVC-350 vocoder to great effect. The result is a haunting and dream-like suite of music that lends itself well to solitude and other inward-facing experiences.

18 years later the world can finally listen to a new Chari Chari album: We Hear The Last Decades Dreaming.

A sublime original collection of organic-electronic music filled with an exotic design in the middle of nowhere from japanese composer and producer, Kaoru Inoue.
The inspiration for the album came from Kaoru's recent vinyl-digger fever, which has been rekindled after a long time since the beginning of his DJ career.

The influences such as contemporary music, minimal music, ethnic music, ambient, new age music, and avant-electronic music make this LP a total blissful journey - psychedelic sound scroll led by the title itself that contains a will to break away from the rich culture and timelessness of the past decades, and a narrative that embraces the changing times.

This is a truly magical event in such exceptional year in our lives. And again the East - West connection shows its spiritual magnetism to the world.

There is definitely something "afro" inspired about this latest EP from Puma & The Dolphin, certainly in comparison to pretty much everything else I've ever heard from him, which includes a great EP on Canadian imprint Chambre Noir and some stellar inclusions on every one of Dj soFa's highly respected "Elsewhere" compilations.

I'm told that while immersed in domestic life during lockdown in Sofia, Bulgaria, the music evolved to take in what was happening at home and saw the inclusion of toy instruments, his own drum playing, the voices of his children playing and even the family parrots whistling and squawking in the background. These random ambient insertions when seen in the context of the hypnotic and percussive rhythms and timbres throughout are oddly reminiscent of the late, great Francis Bebey who, although culturally and physically a million miles removed, was also known for recording much of his work at home and who also featured the voices of his children playing.

In fact, it is as much the music's playfulness and simplicity that give the pieces their distinctive character, at times echoing the repetition and mesmerism of Raymond Scott's "Soothing Sounds For Baby" series. Yet, childrens' music this is not. There is a mysticism and depth on one hand and a willingness to experiment on the other that reminds me of pioneering experimentalist K. Leimer's early Eno-inspired tape outings as well (see "Supermarket" for example).

I asked Puma & The Dolphin's Nikko Names if he could share the story behind how these six tracks came together. He had this to say:

"This collection of pieces were created during a monotone period of my life which I have overlaid with colour: a time in which I surrender to the beauty of home life - watching my kids play, feeding the birds - entwining these sounds of my surroundings amongst the rhythmic layers of these pieces. Playing the drums to remind us of the next circle dance for four. There is something mystic to travel only in your head; a shamanic trip inside the body with no concepts and answers."

In August 2016 Ultramarine created a photo film featuring photographs from Ian Cooper's Survey East website which focuses on a particular stretch of the Blackwater Estuary in Essex.

The film (and accompanying soundtrack) was screened on rotation at the Caught By The River Thames festival at Fulham Palace in London.

For this original Blackwaterside audio/print project, Ultramarine created two new pieces of music inspired by their time working close to the estuary. Glasgow based printmaker/sculptor Bronwen Sleigh visited this remote corner of Essex to sketch and draw, using these visual references to create a lithograph, printed in three colours, which features on the cover of the book accompanying the 7" single.

The book features a series of Ian Cooper's original photographs, alongside poetry by the writer Philip Terry, inspired by the Essex coast, taken from his book Quennets.
