Malouane - Daze Island LP

Our first long-player for 2019, Daze Island, by French producer Malouane, is a seasonally-appropriate departure for Let's Play House that's more summertime meditation than dance-floor ammo.

Across these ten tracks, Malouane takes us on new age-indebted journeys down cobblestone paths banked with flowering cherry blossom, to clear-sky tropical beach sunsets, on hang glider flights across endless fields of golden wheat. As the LP progresses, the tempo picks up and the ambient washes and puffs of pads pull back to make way for dancier rhythms, but even in these moments, Daze Island is a tranquil affair, pressed first and foremost with a desire to independently explore the mysterious worlds within.

Roman Flügel, Oliver Achatz, Tcb, House Of Life - Gemist Part 2

It's the big 5! Berlin - Frankfurt based label House Is OK is celebrating its five-year long presence and has decided to mark that period with something special Label's story started with a sticker Homeboy printed in his former hometown, Zagreb, saying House Is OK'. Catchy, right It became an underground slogan of the local scene. It didn't take long for people to embrace the idea stating that it's OK to be into melodic, fresh, groovy yet, at times, a bit awkward dance music.
Just around the same time Homeboy's Frankfurt based bro's Oliver Achatz and Janis played with the idea of starting a record label. Guess what the logical choice for the name was
Ten records, dozens of original songs and remixes later House is OK continues to grow.
Literally. What was once a platform for the original three founders is now an international family affair supporting the talented artists from Frankfurt, Stockholm, Alexandria and Orlando. Nurturing the friendly approach this musical family continues to grow.
Looking back at the first five years, not only at the music that connected them all but at the bonds that deepened through the production process, House is OK crew wanted to take
create a proper reminder and thank the ones supporting them throughout the years. A double 12' pack titled Gemišt' seemed like a proper way to do that.
- Gemišt will be released as two separate EPs featuring the original music from Kornél Kovacs, Roman Flügel, Gavri & McQueen, TCB, House Of Life and the label makers themselves. Oliver and Janis deliver tracks under their known names, while Homeboy
introduces his new project with fellow Wilde Renate resident The Swift, called Longhair.
Croatian artist Ugruv Smek marks his yearlong collaboration with the label delivering yet another smashing artwork.
Mark the upcoming February when Gemišt part I' is to be released and while you're at it, move on to March just so you don't miss the Gemišt part II' release. And yeah, in case you're wondering - of course it's both 12' EP release and in digital format. House is OK's got you covered.

Chris Coco / Camillo Miranda - Dinosaur Baby EP

IIB celebrate their 50th release with Chris Coco dropping his Dinosaur Baby 12. Featuring the quirky vocals of Camillo Miranda. The OG mix is a hazy stoned out percussive groove dripping in mediterranean sunshine. The dub mix focuses on the hynoptic percussion parts and less on the vox. Rune Lindbaek creates a more electronic disco tinged affair while Luke Solomon creates a straight up deep house bomb. A great release to celebrate a half century!

Kota Motomura - New Experience

3

Brand new Hobbes Music signing from Tokyo, Kota Motomura is a slightly mysterious character with an ear for idiosyncratic music that runs the gamut from Exotica and Jazz to House and Techno. Highly original, it all adds up to a confection perhaps best described as Balearic. This is his second release.

Motomura started sending the label demos in late 2017, off the back of the success of international underground hit Web Of Intrigue (from Leonidas & Hobbes’ last EP, The Rags Of Time). These demos immediately pricked up the ears of label boss Hobbes (already enamoured by Japanese culture, following a couple of Far Eastern DJing tours, Spring ‘17 & Autumn ‘16 - a love affair reflected in his choice of fellow Japanese artist Sayori Wada to create the sleeve for HM010). Hobbes asked to hear more demos. These were also good and the pair agreed on an EP release. And then the line went dead... for more than six months. When Motomura got back in touch, he explained that he had been sick (and would soon be returning to hospital). In any case, label scheduling and other commitments meant it hasn't been possible to release this music until now.

Opening track ‘Aboy’ sets you afloat down a psychedelic stream, plucked strings lulling you into a dreamy state, while the occasional image from some long-forgotten Miyazaki film flows past. It’s a rare gem, sounding a bit like few things from the past but like nothing else out there right now. A2 ‘Yes’ ups the tempo and adds beats, saxophone and vox but is no less unusual, occasional bird calls and other fx dropping into a mix which gets stranger as it progresses over for a marathon ten minutes. Accelerating hyper-actively towards the end, it’s sure to leave a few DJs scratching their heads...

The B-side is a bit straighter: opening track Stars is a bossa nova style house number with infectious piano motifs, while B2 Cry Baby sounds a bit like Carl Craig’s seminal ‘Throw’ re-imagined with different vocal and a wonky piano. Bonus track Satellites (download only) is the kind of low-slung plodder Detroit legend Theo Parrish might drop in one of his warm-up sets, all solid groove and scat-style vocal fx with a nagging keyboard refrain and featherlight shakers against a HEAVY bottom end. And secondary bonus Return (download only) is the kind of bonkers techno bizniz Maurice Fulton or Pepe Bradock might dream up when they're feeling a bit goofy...

Mr Raoul K & Mapiko Mweya - Talking About Woman ft. B'Utiza (Onesided)

This time Mr Raoul K is teaming up with fellow producer Mapiko Mweya. They shift Mr Raoul K's usually blend of real westafrican instruments and modern electronic clubsounds towards the electronic soundscape. With the vocals of B'Utiza, they take us on a rollercoaster ride into an urban concrete jungle very reminiscent of the nineteennineties. Voluminous baselines, westafrican drums, irie layers of swirling sounds, long buildups, occasional breakdowns – delivered with a gritty touch.
Mr Raoul K's mix keeps the atmosphere dense while Mapiko goes for a more airy approach - with either mix keeping its rolling groove up until the end. Dance through the darkness until the sunlight creeps through the cellar windows.
Watch out for Mr Raoul K's Album 'African Paradigm' out on Compost Records this summer.

Hillside - The Kings Tun / Hidden Port

Over the years, Claremont 56 has played host to some memorable collaborative
projects, most notably Bison, an unlikely super-group whose members included
Holgar Czukay, Ursula Kloss, Liquid Liquid’s Sal Principato, Ben Smith and label
boss Paul ‘Mudd’ Murphy. Now Murphy is at the helm of another collaborative
outft, Hillside, whose seductive debut single contains two deliciously pie eyed
instrumental workouts.
Hillside is very much a family affair, with Murphy joining forces with two old
friends: bassist/guitarist Alex Searle and percussionist Patrick Dawes. The trio
has a collaborative history that stretches right back to Murphy’s time in Akwaaba
in the mid nineties. For their debut outing, Hillside has also welcomed a very
special guest musician: award-winning jazz violinist and long-time Bert Jasch
collaborator Mike Piggott.
As opening gambits go, “Hidden Port” is an emphatic statement of intent. The
audio equivalent of sailing slowly around a cluster of sun-baked islands in
search of shelter from an approaching storm, the track sees Searle wrap bluesy,
Peter Green style guitar passages around a shuffing, Latin-tinged groove rich
in Dawes’ distinctive percussion patterns and Murphy’s languid electric piano
and synthesizer lines. As the track progresses, Piggott steps up to make his
mark, with his undulating electric violin lines complimenting Hillside’s impeccable
instrumentation while adding extra emotional weight to proceedings. It’s a
stunning beginning to the Hillside story.
Piggott also makes a big impression on accompanying cut “The King’s Tun”,
delivering fuid and energy-packed solos that weave in and out of a bright
and breezy instrumental track rich in jangling acoustic guitars, subtly spacey
electronics, freside-warm bass and more sparse-but-intricate percussion
courtesy of the effervescent Dawes. Searle’s eyes-closed, rock style guitar solos
cap another memorable excursion from Claremont 56’s latest in-house band.

Sillyboy’s Ghost Relatives - In A Small Place

Earlier this year, Claremont 56 served up something rather special: the
atmospheric, claustrophobic debut single from Greek band Sillyboy’s Ghost
Relatives, “In A Small Place”. A warm, drowsy and evocative commentary on
smalltown paranoia, the single showcased a band not afraid to embrace their
love of blue-eyed soul, soft rock, West Coast jazz-rock and hazy AOR.
These influences shine through on the band’s eponymous debut album, which
will be released worldwide (with the exception of Greece and Cyprus) by
Claremont 56 this September. It’s a slight diversion from an imprint renowned
for its sun-kissed Balearic grooves, pastoral soundscapes and dubbed-out
dancefloor moves, but one fully in keeping with the imprint’s love of warm,
beautiful and atmospheric music.
It’s certainly a confdent debut from Sillyboy’s Ghost Relatives, an Athenian four
piece founded by titular hero Sillyboy (AKA experienced musician, producer and
vocalist Charalambos Kourtaras, who has previously released a string of solo
albums to wide acclaim in his home country). The band is modeled in his image,
with a warm and hazy sound marked out by bold, toasty basslines, effects-laden
guitars and a mixture of retro synths and thickset electric piano motifs.
Sillyboy naturally takes centre stage throughout, delivering his loved-up and
lovelorn lyrics like a latter-day Michael McDonald. His vocal performances, and
that of his similarly experienced colleagues, lend the album a dreamy, visceral
quality fully in-keeping with the languid richness of the music.
Highlights are plentiful throughout. Check, for example, the dewy-eyed, string
laden bliss of opener “Secret”, the 1960s style dream pop cheeriness of “High
Life” and the drowsy, late night drift of “Daylight”, an impassioned plea for
reconciliation rich in close harmony backing vocals and soft focus saxophone
solos. Or, for that matter, the chunky blue-eyed soul grooves of “Muscle Cars”,
the slow and seductive “Favourite One”, the tropical wooziness of “Better Than
Words”, the vintage Steely Dan shuffle of “Learn To Forget” and the breezy
Americana of closing cut “Wasted”, which delivers a stunning conclusion to an
album of rare cohesion.

FERDI - ALL IN ONE

Ferdi

ALL IN ONE

2x12inchC56LP013
Claremont 56
28.05.2019

Two years ago, Ferdi Schuster was a young multi-instrumentalist and producer
daydreaming of releasing his music on Claremont 56, one of his favourite labels.
Now he’s set to release his stunning debut album, “All One”, on Paul Murphy’s
long-running imprint.
It’s been a long time between drinks for the German producer, who last graced
C56 with his superb double A-side single, “Little River/Befreit”, in the autumn of
2017. Fittingly, it’s “Little River” – a babbling brook of audio bliss rich in samba
influenced drums, soothing acoustic guitars and spacey synthesizer licks – that
kicks off “All One”, a seductive set in which every drumbeat, piano note, guitar
riff, synthesizer flourish and freside-warm bassline was played by the man
himself.
Throughout, it’s easy to see why Murphy decided to snap up Schuster and
push the producer to record a debut album. Check, for example, the dubbed
out shuffle of “Thinking of You”, where ghostly chords, soft-focus guitar solos
and ethereal vocals drift across the soundscape, and the slowly unfurling bliss
of “The Good Fight”, an effortlessly Balearic workout rich in sun-kissed guitars,
bubbly synth lines and chords so snugly they could probably be used as a
comfort blanket.
Schuster’s greatest strength is undoubtedly the evocative and enveloping nature
of his instrumental music, which draws on a variety of complimentary influences
but never sounds anything less than original and fresh. Some listeners may be
enchanted by the loose and languid pulse of “Fading Away” or the lo-f reggae
jazz of dusty closing cut “Night Talk”, though others may prefer the stoned funk
shuffle of “Interaction” or the spacey vibrations of “Pulsa”, where intergalactic
synthesizer lines wind their way around heady bass guitar and sparse, off-kilter
deep electro drums.
“All One” is that kind of set; an atmospheric and musically accomplished
collection of cuts capable of muting the mundane and distracting from the stress
of 21st century life. As debut albums go, it’s something of a stunner

San Laurentino - The Garden Of The Hesperides

Hungarian enigma San Laurentino always had a slow-paced release schedule but has anyway accomplished 12 maxis on a bunch of tier-1 imprints like Let's Play House,

Electric Minds, Mathematics and Live At Robert Johnson.
His distinctive, charming style of synthesizer useage remains unmatched in the world of recent electronic music, hoovering somewhere between Vangelis, Jean-Michel Jarre and
Alan Vega's Suicide.

S4AW proudly presents this artist EP of San Laurentino containing three tunes, connecting the dots between Ambient for after hours, Lounge Music and prime time tracks for a club.
Hear for yourself, surely music to fall in love to...

Spring Theory
04.06.2019

For its 12th release, Spring Theory is excited to present a four-tracks EP from Mogwaa, from Seoul, South Korea, his first on the label. The music is by inspired by his experience of living in Peru and Vietnam (more below), and the artwork is a picture of a tapestry I found in Sidi Bou Said, Tunisia. So this record is just an ode to what happens when different worlds meet in an unexpected way and human open-mindness allows colors to fade out on each other to create new tones.

In his own words: “The first track is kind of ode to Lima, Peru. It was the first country that I lived besides Korea so everything was so new to me. And it made lost in thought of their culture: colonial era, dictatorship, and even japanese president. And second track I made it remembering where I lived in Vietnam, a place where the Mekhong river find its way to the sea. Which is full of mangrove forest and mango trees. And third one is scenery of my neighborhood: at some point I could find feelings from my Seoul neighborhood in Peru and Vietnam. And last one is kind of nostaligia for Peru and Vietnam looking forward to coming back someday.

As they influenced me a lot, at some point I could say they’re my holy land so I’ll make a pilgrimage when I’m really exhausted.”

Blair French - Patio Pastel EP

In 2017 Blair French came out of hibernation to release contrasting but similarly sun-kissed EPs on Rocksteady Disco and Claremont 56.

Here, he returns to action with a scintillatingly sunny and sensual six-tracker on NuNorthern Soul that may well be his strongest release to date.

Given French's chameleon-like musical history, that's certainly a bold claim.
Over the years, he's been a member of a multitude of musical collectives - most notably Cosmic Handshakes and Formless Figures - established his own DIY record label (Fat Finger Cosmic) and released music that touches on a dizzying array of styles, from award-winning movie soundtracks and Afro-fired deep house, to skewed techno, blissful ambience and experimental hip-hop.

On Patio Pastel, French is in full on sand-between-the-toes Balearic mood, delivering a range of lucid, ear-pleasing compositions that will sashay their way into your consciousness.
Contrast, for example, the drowsy organs, glistening pedal steel and undulating hand percussion of opener 'Patio Pastel' with the Serge Gainsbourg style chanson-goes-tropical bliss of 'La Playa De Tercipelo', which features some deliciously breathy vocals from Stephanie Lyon.

Then there's 'Morning Sail', a sumptuously evocative soundscape rich in toasty, dub disco bass, shuffling percussion and lilting, Jonny Nash style guitar solos (see also the effortlessly horizontal Lounsbury Gardens'), and the kaleidoscopic, saucer-eyed Balearic pop brilliance of ;'Human Make Human', where new age synthesizer melodies and the fuzzy vocal refrain of Kasi Seguin gentle dances above an Afro-flecked, mid-tempo groove.

Throughout the EP, French mixes electronic and acoustic instrumentation, drawing together musical elements from a myriad of styles to create sumptuous new fusions.
It's particularly evident on superb closer 'Belle Isle Sunsets', where colourful synth motifs, eyes-closed guitar riffs and Mediterranean-warm chords wrap themselves around a gently pulsating, impressively layered groove.
Like the rest of the EP, it's perfectly pitched, expertly executed and wonderfully atmospheric.

ANGELES Y DEMONIOS 2x12"

2x12inchS88100AB
CBS
27.05.2019

A true Balearic / Cosmic classic LP - Columbian brothers Elkin & Nelson's 1974 debut double album 'Angeles Y Demonios' is the perfect blend of traditional latin music, psychedelia, fuzz, glam, ethnic rhythms, progressive rock leanings and everything else in-between! The album had been received quite well on it's release, enabling the brothers to move to Spain and explore their ideas and melodies full-time, but it wasn't until the late 1980's Balearic explosion that the brothers unique musical vision struck a chord with those outside of Spain whose interests were rooted in the more esoteric corners of the record shop racks. Possibly the most well-known track from this LP was 'Jibaro (Enrolle)' that featured on the closing side of the set. This track was picked up and subsequently covered by Paul Oakenfold and the burgeoning wave of UK DJ's who had become enamoured with the white isle and her many sounds, thus birthing the term 'Balearic Beat'. 'Jibaro (Enrolle)' is perhaps one of the benchmarks of that particular microcosmic scene and sound but that doesn't mean the rest of this amazing LP should be ignored. A truly wondrous trip through the rock underground, not traditional by any means, if you dig the Balearic sound, psych-rock, funk and all of it's orbiting planets then this will certainly flip all the right switches for you. A very original set. This classic has been legally reissued by Above Board distribution in conjunction with the legal rights holders - Sony Music Entertainment. This high quality 2 x LP repress features original 1974 gatefold sleeve and label artwork and has been remastered from Sony's original sources by Optimum Mastering, Bristol UK.

BROTHER RESISTANCE - TONITE IS DE NIGHT

Four 1986 in demand dancefloor bangers from Trinidad & Tobago’s father of Rapso. Incl a unreleased dub version of ''Rapso Space'' and the BIG tune ''Crucial Descosion''..

Out of the social unrest and revolutionary times of the early 1970s a new musical art form emerged on the streets of Port of Spain,
Trinidad & Tobago. A group of young guys started to combine poetry with drumming and created the musical art form that is known
today as Rapso.

Poets known as much for their fiery verses as they were for leading protests were at the vanguard of the 1970s Black Power
revolution. There was a new consciousness building in the Trinidad and Tobago arts scene. The two most influential characters were
Cheryl Byron and Lancelot Layne.

Lutalo ‘Brother Resistance’ Masimba and others would play basketball during the day and come back out at night, ‘liming’ and playing
drums. Other people from the block would join with instruments and Brother Resistance would perform his poetry on the rhythms. The
prestigious boys school that Resistance attended refused to acknowledge his attempts at creating verses that reflected the rhythm of
the Trinidad and Tobago creole. ''They said it wasn't poetry. They didn't want to put it in the school magazine.''
Resistance and his friends toyed with other words to describe their style. They came up with 'rapsody' but one night during a show in
Santa Cruz somebody in the audience shouted out ''How you could rap so!'' And the rest is history.

They recorded their first album ‘Bustin Out’ in 1980. More albums followed and they started to work as producers. In 1986 the band
performed at ‘Caribbean Focus’ festival in London and toured the U.K. which helped to lift their reputation internationally. The same
year Brother Resistance decided to produce his first solo album and went to England to record ‘Rapso Take Over’. This album
contains the highly acclaimed tracks Ring De Bell, Dancing Shoes Rapso and Star Wars Rapso. An unreleased take of Wars In
Rapso is featured on this Cree Records 12''.

The band wasn’t too impressed with the ‘English’ production and they decided to record a new version of the song. Junior Wharwood
recorded the guitar tracks. Resistance came up with the idea of Tonight Is De Night. The more or less improvised song became a big
carnival hit in Trinidad and he went to perform it live with bands like Sound Revolution, Shandileer and Charlie’s Roots.

Willie Graf & Darren Eboli - Tribeca Tapes Part Two

Following on from 2018's 'Tribeca Tapes Part One' release, Willie Graf & his musical partner Darren Eboli deliver another fantastic 4 tracker on Copenhagen's Music For Dreams Label.

Willie Graff splits his year between DJ residencies in New York and Ibiza (Pacha). In this second outing with studio partner Darren Eboli, the influence is, African, NY clubbing, World mixing Mediterranean and further afield. The duo finds its roots in the past, building a link between the soul of a song and the warmth of a melody then combining them with a contemporary sound.

The opener 'All Is Bliss' sits at the pinnacle of the underground - A powerful, Balearic, disco influenced club track full of Spanish guitar, handclaps, club synths sounds like it was made for Dj Harvey's 'Mercury Rising' at Pikes in Ibiza. 'Ahimsa' is an outstanding track with funky breakbeat, weird Eastern samples, sneaking acid and Kraftwerk like arpeggios.

'La Sirena' is a balearic beach styled mid tempo chugger with chopped up breaks, deep sub-bass, Compass Point styled keys, whispering voices saying 'Let Your Mind Be Free'. If you are a Cafe Del Mar connoisseur and longing for that sunset moment 'Bellatrix' does the trick featuring bits of Spanish Guitar, Flute, Oboe and floating warm pads creating that early 90ties vibe. Another winner from Willie and Darren - and hopefully an album soon.

Beautiful Swimmers - The Sound Of Love International 002

After signing on with Gatto Fritto’s mind-melting Sound of Love International Volume 1, we’re back, we can smell summer and we’re putting you in the capable hands of festival favourites, Washington DC’s Beautiful Swimmers.

A beautiful swimmer is a small blue crab. The Beautiful Swimmers are Ari Goldman and Andrew Field-Pickering (AKA Max D). And you, my friend, are about to get high on the happy. They’re here to take you on a gleeful joyride around their collective musical imagination.

The Swimmers are full-bore record enthusiasts you see, but whereas you might associate this with squirrelly, exclusive and crabby sorts, they are inclusive, human and warm. It’s a wide-eyed ebullient romp and the joy of discovery is one to share. And to see them DJ IS a joy - they’re having at least
as much fun as anyone else in the room, locked together tight, riding the same wave.

So even when shit gets somewhat darker, the tempos higher and sounds gnarlier (Analogous Doom) the world is never grey. When we’re stone cold balearic in the Adriatic (Plunky) the vibe is up, young and fun. Banging them B’more house beats? Well, you’re probably going to be recognising a welcoming RnB sample (KW Griff).

We’ve also been blessed with some Swimmer’s specials in the shape of ‘Blow Up Girl’ and ‘Living in a Zone’. Exclusive.

Ari and Andrew have previously worked in dog and childcare respectively. If this compilation were a dog it’d be a “rascal”, if it were a kid it’d be “spirited”. We can’t think of anyone better to be your guides, as they themselves might say, “it’s a vibe”.

This is the sound of Love International. Part Two.

Over the past few years, Palms Trax has cemented his place on the Dekmantel roster and become one of the family. His upbeat attitude and knack for selection have made Jay Donaldson one of the scene's most in-demand and warmly regarded selectors. Combining rare, globally-sourced finds with exuberant house anthems, his annual sets at Dekmantel Festival have showed a nearly unmatched capacity for filling floors and creating grooves. Now, the UK producer puts his talents to work on To Paradise, tapping classic Italo, wave and Balearic house for an EP that has summertime written all over it.

Title track "To Paradise" kicks things off with an infectious, melodic chorus that spirals into a pulsing rhythm. It's full of those 'hand-in-the-air' type moments, and topped with blissful vibes. "Love In Space" follows with a throbbing bassline melded with rich atmospheres. It's more Adriatic than Balearic, careening with an anthemic affection and destined for festival season. "Heron" veers away from the Italo vibes and standard structures that hold regular dance tracks together. A departure into more experimental electronics, the dynamics are controlled through rhythms and the synthesised melodies create forlorn narratives across machine-driven sequences. It's a dynamic finish to this considered and perfectly timed trio of offerings.

Four precision originals, one turbo charged remix: flavours and essences range from the rippled tubular arpeggio and Balearic pull of 'Condor' to the slo-mo struts and shimmering disco twinkles of 'Tifock' via the peppy Latino kick and harmonies of 'Vicuna'. Complete with a total euphoric meltdown from the ever consistent Rex The Dog in the form of his strident trance-tickled re-thump of 'Condor', this is undoubtedly Kiwi's biggest release to date... And it's perfect for the colder club-bound season ahead. Enjoy!

Korenl Kovacs, Gavri & Mcqueen, Longhair - Gemist Part 1

It's the big 5! Berlin - Frankfurt based label House Is OK is celebrating its five-year long presence and has decided to mark that period with something special Label's story started with a sticker Homeboy printed in his former hometown, Zagreb, saying 'House Is OK'. Guess what the logical choice for the name was Ten records, dozens of original songs and remixes later House is OK continues to grow. Literally. What was once a platform for the original three founders is now an international family affair supporting the talented artists from Frankfurt, Stockholm, Alexandria and Orlando. Nurturing the friendly approach this musical family continues to grow. Looking back at the first five years, not only at the music that connected them all but at the bonds that deepened through the production process, House is OK crew wanted to take create a proper reminder and thank the ones supporting them throughout the years. A double 12' pack titled 'Gemišt' seemed like a proper way to do that. - Gemišt' will be released as two separate EPs featuring the original music from Kornél Kovacs, Roman Flügel, Gavri & McQueen, TCB, House Of Life and the label makers themselves. Oliver and Janis deliver tracks under their known names, while Homeboy introduces his new project with fellow Wilde Renate resident The Swift, called Longhair. Croatian artist Ugruv Smek marks his yearlong collaboration with the label delivering yet another smashing artwork.

Peaking Lights - Sea of Sand

Californian electronic pop duo Peaking Lights make a splash on Dekmantel with 'Sea of Sand', the band's first release in 2018. It's a kaleidoscopic melting-pot of dainty dub, experimental and leftfield beats, with wondrous sunny soundscapes that blend together the unconventional home-fashioned electronics, and windswept vocals that have defined Peaking Lights to date. 'Sea of Sand' is the band's first record in three years not released on their own imprint. With six tracks, exceeding 30 minutes in total, the extended EP is a prelude to a forthcoming LP. With a DIY aesthetic and approach to analogue instrumentalism, Peaking Lights retro-digital sound is one that sits perfectly with Dekmantel.
.
Already with a string of highly acclaimed albums across their ten year production history, the husband and wife duo that is Aaron Coyes and Indra Dunis have carved out a niche of quirky electronic, and psychedelic pop sounds. 'Sea of Sand' once against sees the act once again teaming up with an international label, having released on some of the most integral and pioneering imprints in the scene. The band, who founded themselves on innovative technology, and a pragmatic approach to sound and composition recorded the EP together in their home studio, Dreamfuzz. The result, 'Sea of Sand' feels more like a mini-LP, with a diverse mix of experimental beats, and extended electronic, pop-dubs. As ever, Dunis focuses primarily on vocals, along with synths, piano, and live electronic drums, with Coyes on synths, drum programming, and dubbing on a mixing console. Recording the vocals live in the studio, the band worked a lot with tape, using tape scratching effects to the give the record an even more dubbier feel. The record kicks off with the quirky, upbeat pop track 'Blind Corner', followed by slower Italo-like 'Hypnotized'. There's a wavey-krautrock sound on 'Shift Your Mind'; a glowing romanticism on 'Read your mind'; and a celestial ambience embedded through 'Noise of Life. The record concludes with the sonically divine harmonic piano track 'Sea of Sand', perfectly setting the template for the EP.

Recorded & Mixed at Dreamfuzz, Los Angeles, CA by Aaron Coyes and Indra Dunis in April/May 2018.

Phillipi & Rodrigo - Paciencia LP

Phillipi&Rodrigo

Paciencia LP

12inchDEEWEE032
DEEWEE
22.02.2019

The latest release from DEEWEE, the record label run by Soulwax/2manydjs' David and Stephen Dewaele, comes from Phillipi & Rodrigo. 'Paciencia' is the Brazilian duo's 9-track debut album, recorded, produced and mixed at Studio DEEWEE in Gent.

This longplayer follows Phillipi & Rodrigo's single of the same name; released in November last year, 'Paciencia' (single) was backed with a DEEWEEDUB. The release picked up plaudits from Lauren Laverne on BBC6 Music, Dazed & Confused, Mixmag, DJ Mag, Rinse France, Acid Stag, and a host of DJs including Âme, Mano Le Tough, Disclosure, Applescal, Elliot Adamson, nd_baumecker, Tiga, Joe Goddard, Citizenn, DJ T., Black Coffee, Carl Craig, and more. All vinyl copies sold out within 3 weeks.

Described by David and Stephen as sounding 'like Stereolab in 2018 singing in Portuguese while a Batacuda band performs at a Brazilian beach techno party', 'Paciencia' (album) begins with 'Magnetico', a languid, dubby start, that opens proceedings before the upbeat, organ-heavy psychedelic pop of 'Retrogrado'. The melancholic 'Minas' (complete with beautiful piano, strings, and birdsong), is the first straight dance cut on the album, a torch song, sung, like the rest of the album, in Portuguese.

Previous singles, 'Mantra', (their second release alongside 'New Beach' on DEEWEE017), and the equally acclaimed 'Karma' (released with 'Gueto De Gent' as DEEWEE010) are also included. 'Barberella' and 'Rotina' show the depth and width to Phillipi & Rodrigo's sound, before the album shifts gear with the slow techno groove of 'Face', and 'Paciencia' (single) closes the album with 5 minutes of hypnotic brilliance.

Tourist Kid - Crude Tracer

Tourist Kid's first release for Melody As Truth. Recorded in Perth and Melbourne between 2016 and 2017. Though the idea of movement between two places could be a somewhat romantic afterthought, a more palpable sense of dislocated unease creeps up on the listener throughout the album.
.
On "Discourse II", stutters of digital trash segue seamlessly into a plateau of serene, glassy ambience - and on "Bacterial", the hiss and sting of rehashed foley seems to dance around a plaintive, oh-so delicate piano solo. These striking contrasts are deftly managed, playing upon notions of digital noise and ambient, while never feeling weighed down by the limits of reference or gesture. Indeed, numerous touchstones to Tourist Kid's earlier work - and to that of contemporaries - are synthesised and expanded upon to great detail and atmosphere. "Crude Tracer" sits in its own adeptly nuanced and assured space.

Tourist Kid's production encompasses all manner of tangible and otherworldly sounds as a vehicle to explore something far more intriguing than a simple instrumental fetish - so much so that the
overwhelming sting of blasted detritus or a broken and bent vocal is capable of eliciting such delicate impulses as glistening, heart-wrenching piano chords. It's a unique - and very special - kind of beauty that Tourist Kid gracefully achieves with "Crude Tracer'.

Eva Be - BElight EP

Eva Be

BElight EP

12inchPFRWAX008
Poker Flat Recordings
28.01.2019

Eva Be has been a key figure on the development of Berlin underground club culture, going back to the 90s and her involvement with the Sonar Kollektiv crew that included the likes of Dixon, Ame and Jazzanova, to name a few. A highly talented producer and DJ, this EP on Poker Flat Wax showcases her skillful mastery of house music.

'Delight' kicks things off on the A side, a low slung groove wirth Chicago-esque percussion that pops out of the speakers. Some of Eva's love for dub and reggae is also present - vocals and chord stabs echo and shimmer across the track.

'Breathe' is a little more floor focussed - a hard knocking kick starts this off and the track develops into one of those deep, emotional and driving tracks that get dancefloors into a serious states of ecstasy.

Flip the wax and 'Pills' is the third offering for this release - precise-yet-wonky drums, breakbeats, deep pads and synth lines that gel together into a perfect, hedonistic whole.

Ross From Friends - Aphelion EP

British producer Ross From Friends aka Felix Clary Weatherall is the newest signing to Flying Lotus's Brainfeeder family. The 24 year old has a fistful of releases under his belt, the distillation of myriad influences from hip-hop cut 'n' paste culture, 80s Eurobeat, Hi-NRG and Italo into lithe, irresistible, raw dancefloor trax. He made his debut on Breaker Breaker in 2015, followed by outings on Lobster Theremin and sister imprint Distant Hawaii, Lone's Magicwire and recently: Molten Jets.

'It's honestly an absolute rush to sign to Brainfeeder,' he explains. 'It has always been pushing such a forward thinking sound, one that constantly grabs my attention with every release. I put these 4 tracks together with Brainfeeder in mind, I wanted to explore the music that I've been developing over the past 7 years as Ross From Friends whilst trying to explore the explosive sound that the label is best known for.'

Up first, 'John Cage' encapsulates both his desire to experiment but also maintain a sense of fun. 'It originally began life as a tune for this goofy hip-hop project that me and my pal Guy from back home always do when he's in London,' explains Felix. 'I'd be making the beat and he raps. It's always a refreshing approach making tracks in that atmosphere because we're both always on such a spontaneous tip. When I'm making music alone, I'm obsessive and everything takes hours, whereas with Guy, we'd try and get as many tracks finished as possible in like a few hours. That's him freestyling a relaxation tape in the intro.'

Limited edition black vinyl 12' housed in an uncoated white board sleeve with product sticker.

Hayes & Zeitgeist - Otway Chimes

Moonshoe set their sights south of the border, shining a light on a collaboration between two vanguards of the Melbourne underground - Ziggy of 30/70 and Analogue Attic alumni Matthew Hayes. This EP bridges both their sounds while retaining a flavour all of its own, and Hayes' spacious production affords their ideas room to breathe. The result combines disparate influences from jazz, ambient techno, house music, and broken beat to form a musical vernacular that feels singular to these two.

In 2007 Smith & Mudd's first album - Blue River - came out as a CD release. It's now been fully remastered by Simon Francis and will be released on a hand numbered limited edition gatefold LP.

"Blue River is a spine-tingling and evocative mixture of the organic and the electronic, the past and the future. It's an album you will want to hear again and again and as you listen more you will begin to notice the subtlety of the production, the clarity of the guitars, the warmth of the bass guitars, even the vivid colours the music paints in your mind while you listen. Blue River is a beautiful collaboration between Paul 'Mudd' Murphy and Ben Smith and features some incredible guitar work from Bob Klose, a founding member of Pink Floyd"
