After a relocation to the Pacific Northwest,
Continental Drift's Conoley Ospovat turns in a laid-back EP befitting his verdant environs. Even the most energetic of the selections, Last Month in Lincoln from the B side, is anchored by an understated groove bopping along far below the floating chimes & rolling bass-line at its forefront. The pace across this record is often reminiscent of Melbourne's Analogue Attic showcases. Harwood Summer Nights dispenses with percussion altogether, while Dreamin' (Daydream Mix) reimagines the titular downtempo breakbeat tune as heard through a struggling FM radio receiver a little further up the beach.

Celebrated composer, producer, techno talent and ambient craftsman John Beltran is a real Detroit don and now he is back on one of the city's own labels, Motor City Wine, with Volume 4 of Back To Bahia on 7". This one finds him going even deeper than before, starting with 'Laguna', which will soon uplift you with its Afro-Brazilian drums and live bass from James Simonson next to lush keys. 'Just Beyond The Sun' then gets fully Balearic with its mix of sultry trumpet, shuffling and Latin-tinged rhythms and wispy cosmic chords. A real delight.

Soul Clap Records serve up the flavours of Tatie Dee for their next release. Morning Routine is a six-track weave through bumping house complete with trademark remixes from Black Loops and Belaria.

Opener ‘Nuit d'Ménil’ channels journeys home through the 20th arrondissement of Paris, around Ménilmontant, for Tatie and her friends. Those late-night walks inspiring this dreamy glitched out, synth heavy roller.

Next up, ‘Bed and Break fast’ is a dancefloor bumper, raw and emotive yet powerful and punchy. Moving from a breakbeat to a 4/4 rhythm it’s an intoxicating concoction laced with grooving bars, glistening pads and deft sax injections. Black Loops steps up on remix duties honing in on that breakbeat flavour with a late night, blissful, bouncy burner.

On the flip, ‘I Wasn't Born In 1937’ nods to Tatie’s pal Lucas Moinet, who runs Studio 937. The person that introduced her to the world of the MPC, rolling with her to buy her first one. Having got home and plugged everything in, the first sound Tatie composed on her MPC was this one - it was for him.

Next, ‘16 Swing-71’ is a classic-leaning, ‘90s feeling deep house track. Weighty organs and trademark deep house stabs are served with the 16 swing-71 shuffle from the SP1200 to make everything groove just right. Closing it out Baleria puts a fast-paced new beat spin on 'Bed and Break fast’ for a club ready powerhouse remix.

Bárbara Boeing joined Toy Tonics. The Brazilian DJ selector and heavy addicted worldwide vinyl digger (that some of you might have seen at the last Dekmantel Selectors Festival). Bárbara has been playing with the Toy Tonics DJs for some time, so it was just a matter of when the EP would happen. Now it’s the moment.

Bárbara teamed up with Sam Ruffillo, the Italian producer, keyboarder, DJ (who just had a little scene hit with the Italianissimo release). Sam helped her to shape 3 tracks. Dance floor fillers that Bárbara basically did the way SHE needs them for her DJ sets. And the results are bangers. Inspired by people like DJ Raffa, Mr. Monday, Yello, MBG international Records, Penny Penny she and Sam created 3 instrumentals that reflect 3 different shades of Bárbara’s taste:

Baile Do Silêncio:
Inspired by the 90s funk from Brazil and its high energy inside the dance floors, Baile Do Silêncio was made to make people dance.

Brasiliana:
Dreamy Italo House chords over some Latin percussion creates the intimist atmosphere of this deep and mysterious track.

Brigada:
Hard to be categorized into one genre, this track serves a pinch of Balearic elements over a dancefloor-oriented House with some Kwaito and also Italo Disco references.

Bárbara Benghi Boeing – yes, that is her real name - comes from Curitiba, South of Brazil. She is a great example of a person with an ultimate passion for music, spending big periods of her life only searching for sounds, organizing parties, playing in hundreds of events and then slowly growing into an international famed DJ personality that stands for a high-quality music standard and a tasteful selection that only SHE can serve.

Bárbara is very disciplined in selecting and creating moods inside of her sets. As she puts it: “... there is a magical part in attracting people into the music that is more of a feeling or sometimes just a mix of tracks I like. In my mind, I usually know where I am going to for the next couple of tracks. My DJ sets become something very individual in the end. With Sam, I wanted to create tracks that can fit into certain special moments of my sets..“

In fact, her sets are very exiting soulful trips through different sound worlds. Always very colorful and percussive, sometimes deeper, often full of Latin positivity. She has a long history of DJing and searching for music since she started to play guitar with 13 years and later became part of a local DJ crew (with Phil Mill, who is part on one of the tracks of this EP) in Alter Disco, her local party in Curitiba. Slowly, she became known and started to play outside.

She adds: "When I had the opportunity to go to Europe, I used to send a million emails to people that maybe would like my music and one or two would answer me, then I could play at small gigs and radios. Then, slowly people started to invite me for bigger things. Over the last 2 years now, there is a lot of buzz around Bárbara. She was invited to play main time slots at festivals like Dekmantel (BR) and Dekmantel Selectors, Time Warp, Nuits Sonores, Lente Kabinet, Cocktail D'Amore, Flow Festival and many others .. and is part of the Toy Tonics Jam DJ crew officially now.

We begin with the title track, Quiet City, and immediately conjure up images of late night drives through anonymous city streets. A producer, live performer and solo act whose productions merge influences spanning Turkish, Kurdish, Armenian and Arabic sonics and beyond, Safak Oz Kutle, aka Oceanvs Orientalis, has crafted a sound that is entirely his own ever since making his debut back in 2014. Following on from his impressive debut appearance on the imprint with ‘Il Lupo’ alongside Italian talent Tooker, revealing the first single from his forthcoming album, the Istanbul-based talent is back on Crosstown Rebels with another gem taken from the project as he reunites with singer-songwriter Idil Mese for the excellent ‘Heart Pieces’ - with remixes from Crosstown and Rebellion regular Mustafa Ismaael, and legendary house talent and Warp favourite Nightmares On Wax.

Slow-blooming and resonant throughout, guided by Mese’s soulful and emotive vocals, vibrant sax melodies and trippy background samples, ‘Heart Pieces’ is a dazzling slice of laid-back, jazz-infused house music full of subtle elements. Remixing the record, Mustafa Ismaeel leans towards late-night hours with a remix drenched in rolling percussion and sweeping leads, while Nightmares On Wax takes the track in two directions - opting for loose drums, hazy tones and chugging grooves across his first take before laying the focus solely on the musical elements with his ‘Club Dub’.

Since emerging on Golf Channel Recordings a decade ago, Payfone has built up a strong catalogue of singles that effortlessly blur the boundaries between slow-motion electronic disco, seductive songs and sun-splashed Balearic beats. While the project has appeared on a number of different labels, some of the best material – including the superb ‘Last Night In Sant Celoni’ and atmospheric ‘Sofian’ – has appeared on Leng.

‘I Feel You’, Payfone’s first outing on the long-serving label for two years, is another high-class mid-tempo offering tailor-made for loved-up dancefloors and intoxicated, sofa-bound listening sessions. Produced by Phil Passera and Jimmy Day in collaboration with Dominican Republic-born lyricist and vocalist Kyd Nereida, who also appears on the cover artwork, the song is a typically atmospheric, mid-tempo treat marked out by immersive chords, squelchy synth-bass, eyes-closed jazz guitar motifs (courtesy of guests J Felix and Royce Wood Jr.) and smoky sax (provided by Jordi Blanch). Add some bonus percussion hits and Nereida’s sassy lead vocal, and you have another superb, stirring and spine-tingling treat.

The accompanying remixes come from label co-founder Paul Murphy under his now familiar Mudd alias, marking the first time that he’s provided reworks for the imprint since 2015. His vocal and instrumental wrap Passera and Day’s original mix in layers of tactile, evocative musical goodness for a heady and intoxicating atmospheric excursion. Opting for a warming, soul-enriching vibe, Murphy adds slowly shifting synth sounds, flanged guitars, sun-soaked chords, simmering synth-strings and spacey electronics. By the time guest keyboardist Michele Chiavarini’s solos make their way into the sound space to – taking things up a notch emotionally in the process – you’ll be lost in Murphy and Payfone’s loved-up aural world. As remixes go, they’re as stunning as Payfone’s superb original mix.

A side starts with proto-house flavored drum action from lower latitudes, moving onto portuguese slow jam synth pop featuring female and kindergarten vocals over more chunky drum generosity. B side features a lazy edit of a well known 90s hit which will most likely land DJ Piñatas a special DJ set in the courtroom, followed by almost 7 minutes of recordings of various helicopter models landing and taking off. Don't ask...

Early 90's Italian house album compiled from two releases, composed and played by Marco Calderoni with help on production and writing by Giacomo Brunetti.

The legendary Test Pressing blog launch their new offshoot label, Test Pressing Catalogue with street soul tinged music brought to you by Apiento and Andrew Hale of Sade with vocals by the truly talented Laura Groves (who has recently released her new album and been working with Sampha).

Guided by the influential Andrew Hale of the legendary band Sade, this collaboration channels the timeless soul, jazz, and R&B essence that defines Sade's iconic sound. Andrew's expertise, honed through years as Sade's keyboardist, seamlessly intertwines with Apiento's vision, producing street soul music that pays homage to Sade's enduring legacy.

Band Of Nowhere is a new constellation project by Juanjo Sánchez, together with other collaborators with whom he had previously worked. It is worth mentioning Bob Drake on drums, former member of the legendary formation Thinking Plague (also on Hail, 5UU's, The Science Group) who has also mastered the project from their studio in the Midi-Pyrénées and also to mention the guitarist Jordi Cabayol (Camino al Desván) both Juanjo and Jordi began their career in a significant band of Barcelona of the early eighties, such as Entr'acte.



The becoming of Juanjo Sánchez would take him to other latitudes as a member of Alondra Satori and without losing the lighthouse of his city, he would collaborate with other outstanding musicians such as Quicu Samsó (Koniec, Macromassa).



The fluidity and chromaticism of his previous album Gonza Magilla is still perceived in here, but in a much more electrified way with guitars that are sometimes expansive, other times exuberant wrapped up with contagious synthesizer modulations and very marked rhythms. The production and especially the arrangements are fantastic with those special presences of synthesizers that are not common around here.



Its original improvisation and experimentation is skilfully adjusted by Juanjo Sánchez, giving a much more playful result with unexpected combinations, very much in continuity with a certain European Art Rock such as Aksak Maboul, Etron Fou, Zamla,The Work or the mischievous resonances of The League of Gentlemen; all this mapping the sound transit, to an unpredictable and vibrant non-place.

Magic Wand welcomes Baz Bradley for a series of Special Editions that keep blissed-out late summer dancing sessions alive and possible even as days shorten and the sun fades away. He opens up with 'Soul Boys' (Acetate edit) which is an 80s disco jaunt with superb vocals and noodling funk rifts. 'Super Maxi' is a more stripped-back and aloof groove with sung-spoke vocals and hook melodies making for a weird yet wonderful vibe. 'Flight 207' (Gate One) is another slow-motion and dubbed-out disco funker then 'Burn The Candle' has a raw percussive twist.

Randy Rice mixed accoustic singer-songwriter songs with electrifying acid guitar in his marvellous privately pressed double album from 1974.

I was between the ages of 18 and 20 when I wrote the 22 songs found on To Anyone Who Ever Laughed at Someone Else. They express the thoughts and frustrations, hopes and fears of a young man coming of age in a world that was full of upheaval and transformation. I was a product of that period in America we call the sixties—those years between the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in November 1963 and the resignation of President Richard Nixon in August 1974. In fact, this record was released that same month Nixon resigned. Over the next five years, I toured the country as an acoustic artist performing at clubs, coffeehouses and colleges. During that time, I watched the idealism and social consciousness of the sixties slowly fade away. In its place emerged a cynicism and materialism that still seems to be with us so many years later. More than anything else, I think To Anyone Who Ever Laughed at Someone Else is a time capsule that speaks to us from a past era. A period when, above all other things, we asked questions. We questioned our country, we questioned our faith, we questioned the very purpose of life itself. I am very excited to bring those questions and these songs to a new generation on a new continent. Special thanks to my friends Jordi Segura of Wah Wah Records who took the initiative to release this 50th Anniversary Re-issue of To Anyone Who Ever Laughed at Someone Else and Michel Veenstra Klinkhamer, who introduced us.

George Davis drops part 2 of his ‘Ona’ EP: heavenly house featuring a remix by the legendary Roy Davis Jr.
kickin’ up dust drops part 2 of the ‘Ona’ EP by George Davis. A jazzy bassline, snazzy piano keys and a rhythmical vocal send hips swinging and shoulders shaking in ‘Gomera’, a track which Chicagoan legend Roy Davis Jr. then remixes with a ‘Chitown Vibe’. Squelchy synths and organic percussion enter his version with a stylish swagger, maintaining the keys while moving the vocals to the back of the mix. Next up, ‘Bumpa’ is built for the dancefloor, an infectious groove forming the base for whimsical flute-like melodies, before ‘Soul Journey’ closes out the record with a gorgeous slow-burning vision of sunset shores and distant views.
Following on from his first ‘Ona’ EP which dropped on kickin’ up dust in March, and which won the support of artists like Honey Dijon, Nightmares On Wax, DJ Sneak and many more, George Davis now drops part two in the series. The german label, which initially started in 2021 as a party in the techno capital of Berlin, first turned heads hosting artists with a funkier edge to them such as Maurice Fulton, DJ Deep, and Louie Vega.
