Quattrovalvole is the future/past/disco/drive project designed by Joone and Miss Zagato. Four on the floor Italo-disco, glossy 80s new wave pick us up in this afterdark lifestyle EP. The title track ‘Into the Night’ is a curb crawler’s seduction. Dedicated to the leather hand-notated black book, our dial up lover calls with arpeggiators demanding, then teasing like feathers over the phone. Big chords push us to drive fast, ready for what we long for.

B-side ‘Too Many Lights’ squeezes us, just what we need when broken glass is swept up from the disco floor. Tame drums and retro claps dictate, as the chords are stargazing with Miss Zagato’s vocals. They preside over the party, with potions of bliss and intoxication, we are invited intimately into this dream life.

Joone’s ‘Into The Night’ remix takes us into the future, driving at the wheel of an alcantara suede upgraded Ferrari 308 Vetroresina. The layers of well-informed 80s synth wave sends us into another dimension.

Sounding like a constipated and forced minimalistic funky music created in a small bedroom environment, warm, dirty and slowed down like from an old tape cassette but full bodied, the release begins with the intimate and dark mood of Sam and keeps going on with the mysterious vibes of March, the breakbeat rhythm of the Broken Gravity track and the smokey atmosphere of the downbeat sketch Slap.More mechanical grooves on B side with the percussive mid tempo of Attrazioni and more ethereal, intergalactic broken beats with Amarcord, going back to obscurity with the soulful slow house jam of Gess, while the dubby The New Stein track close up the release with a touch of micro spacial spirituality. I write these lines with tears. Tears of joy and tears of regret. Joy, because Todd Terje's 2011 release "Ragysh" on Running Back is still one of my labels' pivotal moments - thanks to Terje of course. Regret, because its flips side "Snooze 4 Love" experiences a new dawn via Terje's own Olsen Records - and what a repetition it is. The morning dew is courtesy of Dixon and Luke Abbott, who both puts their respectively unique touch to the original's 8 minute and 8 second long lesson in blissful weightlessness - a true Terjerine dream if there ever was one. That image is precisely where Border Community mainstay Abbott adds his brush and easel to. Ambient, inventive and absorbing Abbott's remix creates something like a fourth dimension to it. So good that it is a perfect start to any day or set. On the other end of the Snooze spectrum, Dixon elbows it in the ribs. First and foremost a DJ, Dixon does what DJs do. He straightens out the thing, loses its fat and makes it fit for his specific dance floor and anyone who is keen to joy. So good that it is a perfect end to any day or set. Damn, I am jealous of this record.

A lost UK boogie gem from 1982 / Brit Funk era, recorded by singer Tony Crockett and Ralph Lewars' band "Pastiche" !

All in their early to mid 20's and born in London of Caribbean descent. The group were short lived, working on material for just a few years with the "Queen of Hearts" 12-inch being their only release. The track immediately demands the listener's attention with it's jazz piano, thumping drums, heavy bass, guitar licks and laced with funky flute, synth stabs, spacey sound effects, then dropping into soulful silky vocals and slinky rap - bringing together this killer boogie groove. Now finely re-issued for the first time by Diggers Dozen, giving this incredible rare record a more deserved chance to be heard and loved!

Here is a special record for the disco fraternity. Pressed in a limited quantity of 300 copies only.

Chicago veterans Rahaan and DJ Emanuel have teamed up for a remix project for new label “Yams n Rekkids.” Reworking this collection of classics, the pair brings a reimagined take on disco era dance floor staples with Rahaan’s trademark minimalism and punch. In 2021, these mixes shine a light on much of what was missing over four decades ago.

Side A side contains a session remix of “Burnin’ Up,” a UK dance-pop crossover from seminal vogue performers, Imagination. With stems derived from a combination of the original 1981 mix and 1983’s Night Dubbing album remix, “Up In Flames” is a combination remix of a remix bringing to light a different side of Leee John and company’s original concept.

Side A also includes 1976 Motown disco classic “Love Hangover,” by Diana Ross. Only this time it’s not actually Diana on the track! Expertly crafted, DJs Rahaan and Emanuel’s “The Cure” excerpts Diana while bringing to the forefront a mysterious background vocalist to helm the lead. The result is pure dance floor magic.

Across the entirety of Side B is a dubbed out 1978 groove from female P-funk phenomenons Parlet. Originally known as “Pleasure Principle,” the “Lucky Starships” remix remains close to the integrity of the original composition, while bringing to light that which has been buried in the original mixes.

Remixes From The Dungeon is the second project from DJs Rahaan and Emmanuel and the first of many for nascent label Yams n Rekkids. Primed for the dance floor, these songs bring a Chicago take on dance music history,

This dichotomy is clear on opener ‘Silicon Horizon’, a propulsive banger from Kayroy which draws inspiration from the threshold of the digital age, evoking the rush of a nighttime race through city streets on a Tron bike.

The anthemic ‘Make Italo Disco Great Again’ gives tune to the phrase brandished by DJs such as Skatebård. Romain FX faithfully celebrates the ongoing Italo legacy with appropriately tuneful synths and cheesy lyrics, courtesy of vocalists Guido Balboa & Annika.

On the flip, German synth-wave fanatic Compilerbau delivers an atmospheric masterclass with ‘Raindance’. Here, intricate percussion and retrofuturist synth-scapes create an adrenaline rush of a track which could easily be the theme song from a lost 80’s action movie.

GREETINGS completes the release with ‘Time Is A Thief’, a bombastic trip to the Paradise Garage complete with piano stabs, a throbbing bassline and enough cowbell to cure any fever.

What began as a challenge to fight creative stagnation, soon grew into a fully-fledged audio-visual project for Belgian DJ, producer and live artist, Biesmans. Setting himself the goal of making three tracks per week for a month, he re-scored ‘80s pop culture moments – including films, TV shows and games, resulting in a brilliant 12-track work encompassing new wave, indie, dark wave, electro and
disco.
Moving his modular-heavy studio to Berlin in 2014, the ensuring years saw Joris Biesmans drop heat on Correspondent, Disco Halal, AEON, 17 Steps and Future Disco. He’s been a core member of Watergate
family since his arrival in the capital, working as the club’s sound technician. He made his debut on Watergate Records in 2020 with the well-received ‘Electric Love’ EP.
The ‘Planes, Trains & Automobiles’ album took shape in April last year as the lockdown was starting to take grip and Biesmans needed a positive distraction. Ensconced in the music of his childhood and ‘80s
pop cultural fodder, he locked himself in his studio and set about creating, later digging through archival footage to match the music. Biesmans, who previously undertook work scoring films, was so absorbed by the process, he’d sometimes do it in reverse; allowing the vintage media be the guide. Throughout the period, the clips were shared each Monday, Wednesday and Friday on his Instagram, building up a firm following from fans, friends and colleagues. And thus, the project found its wings, developing into an album.
Throughout the dozen tracks, highlights are plentiful; from the neon ambience of the Kraftwerk-inspired ‘ ‘Cosmic Cruise’, which later accompanied a smoky scene between Tom Cruise and Rebecca de Mornay in ‘Risky Business’; the sun-soaked, retro-pop title track, which became the album’s first single, and was paired with a jubilant dance scene from the Breakfast Club; ‘Cold Void’, the album’s second single, which saw Biesmans link up with fellow Belgians Boi Wonder and Tom the Bomb for a dark wave creation built around a heavy guitar solo and set against a backdrop of Blade Runner clips; and the silky electro funk of ‘Another World’ that soundtracks scenes from Miami Vice.
Biesmans explains about ‘Planes, Trains and Automobiles’: “I started this as a lockdown challenge, in which I would make three tracks per week for a month, alongside providing videos where I re-scored
footage of 80s pop culture moments. Inspired by the movie of the same name, I picked the title because it ties to the theme of ‘mobility’. Our society is based upon being mobile and when Corona hit us, we
could taste a bit of being immobile. As an artist that meant, I could focus on making music 100%. No distractions, no weekend gigs, no parties just making music. This new lifestyle resulted in my first album.
A journey into the past but looking forward to the future, experimenting with other genres and techniques to make a real album that goes beyond club music.”

Gordon Koang, South Sudan’s enigmatic superstar and ceaseless fountain of infectious, upbeat pop music, kick starts 2021 by revealing a series of remixes from his recent Unity album, this time partnering with two of the undisputed leaders of electronic music in his adopted home city of Melbourne, Australia - Sleep D and Andras.

Stranded overseas after civil war tore apart their country over six years ago, Gordon and his cousin Paul Biel Kueth, who were on tour performing to expatriate communities in Australia, were forced to apply for humanitarian protection and made the heartbreaking decision to leave their families stranded at home, on the chance that citizenship would be granted and reunification made possible.

After languishing on the outskirts of Melbourne’s suburbs for many years, Gordon met the Music in Exile label, a not-for-profit run by members of Melbourne’s flourishing music scene in order to create more opportunity for the city's numerous refugee and migrant musicians. He immediately assembled a band and tracked his eleventh full-length album, Unity (his first recorded album featuring performances in English and made widely available).

In the midst of a successful run of singles and festival performances around Australia, the Covid-19 pandemic hit, derailing Gordon’s newfound success and growing status as the darling of Melbourne’s vibrant music scene. Forced to find alternatives, Gordon reached out to some of his newfound friends in that city’s community. The result - this set of startling remixes by some of the finest voices in electronic music today.

Gordon, who was born blind in a small village in South Sudan’s Upper Nile Valley, began composing on the thom, a five-stringed instrument sometimes referred to as a Sudanese banjo, He started busking on the streets of Juba, accompanied by his cousin Paul Biel, who would sell homemade cassettes and CD’s. His anthems of peace, love and unity struck a chord, and before long Gordon found himself as something of a folk hero and a voice for peace in a country torn by ongoing conflict.

Now resettled in Australia, Gordon records and releases music in order to support his family back home in East Africa. He still awaits Australian citizenship, and forges on in the hope that this may one day be granted, allowing him to reunite with his wife and family in his newfound home.

Unity is Gordon’s eleventh full-length album and first to be recorded in Australia. It was produced by Stefan Blair and Liam Parsons of Melbourne lo-fi legends Good Morning, and features an ensemble cast of Australian performers. South Sudan and Y Dah are taken from the album, reimagined here by Andras and Sleep D. The remixes were a gift to Gordon and his family, with no fees paid or royalties due - all proceeds go directly to Gordon to help him reunite with his family.

At Cloud’s Length is a collaborative compilation of musical works from artists on Melbourne/Naarm based collective WAT artists, using the vehicle of music as the driving force of connection.

While the opportunities to gather have been put on hold, this compilation is a collaborative release rising from a challenge set to the WAT artists roster to connect and create using isolation as a creative parameter from which to generate new music, resulting in surprising and powerful musical cross-pollination.

At Cloud’s Length - an ode to the use of cloud storage as the last front of musical collaboration during lockdown - reaches through the veil of isolation, passing overland, gathering energy and offering a release saturated with creativity and collaboration from afar.
This compilation is both a confluence of unique and diverse creative minds and a narrative of humanity's desire for deeper meaning and connection.

Yokohama-based producer Foodman - aka 食品まつり or Shokuhin Matsuri - continues his expansive sonic voyage with his new EP Dokutsu, out on 6th March 2020. It follows his 2019 release ODOODO, which was issued on Diplo’s Mad Decent label. Dokutsu is the first release on Highball, a brand new label exporting forward-thinking music from Japan.

Foodman emerged from Japan’s nascent footwork scene, using the genre as a springboard for an escapist exploration into a dazzling array of sounds. He’s since earned the respect of influential fans including Diplo, Benny Blanco, Cashmere Cat and HOMESHAKE, while Pitchfork, Noisey, FACT and Tiny Mix Tapes have included his releases in various ‘best of the year’ lists since 2016.

Opening track Kazunoko sets the tone for what will follow. Its woozy rhythm is evocative of the off-kilter playfulness that’s become a hallmark of Foodman’s uncategorizable artistry. It’s also a sign of his inventiveness that he constantly adds fresh layers to the track without losing sight of its light-hearted, spacious feel.

Another of Foodman’s unorthodox traits is his ability to meld the frenetic with the soothing. Hirake Tobira is a case in point. Its production is hypnotic, while its central motif - endless twists and variations on a vocal sample - is sufficiently insistent to demand attention. Kachikachi reverses the trick with a thrilling rush, stuttering otherwise unobtrusive sounds.

Elsewhere the EP plays on sonics which have echoes of the familiar while remaining alien: the boss fight soundtrack of Oshiro, the clattering percussion that dominates Imo Hori, and the ambient psychedelia of Konomi.

Based in Yokohama, an hour south of Tokyo, Foodman’s multifaceted skills also encompass DJing and painting. His press image, shown above, is a self-portrait. From the stripped-back sketches of his 2012 set Shokuhin (released on Giant Claw’s Orange Milk label) to the richer textures of ODOODO, Foodman has subverted everything from Okinawan folk to J-Pop to D&B/classical fusion into his own otherworldly inventions.

Disclosure returned in February with the brand new ‘Ecstasy’ EP where they rolled out a track a day over five days in the same vein to their last release, the ‘Moonlight’ EP (2018). Only this time, the ‘Ecstasy’ EP was in fact, a precursor to their third album ‘ENERGY’ – set for release on August 28th on Island Records.

Washington collective, The 3 Pieces, privately-pressed Iwishcan William on their own DL Records in 1982. The 12 has Discogs, for one, confused. Is it soul, rap, jazz, go-go, funk, electro, or educational? By nature of its birthplace and date of birth, it`s all of those.

Synths shimmer in harp-like glissando. The bass grumbles, rumbles, machine-made. The beat pops and locks. The whole thing grooving and exuding positivity. One part the cosmic funk of say Cloud One`s Patty Duke. Another, the balearic chug of Will Powers` Adventures In Success. Like Brother D it looks to “agitate, educate, and organize”, and stirs in the sentiments of Razzy`s I Hate Hate. Imagine if the Last Poets jammed with sister Sarah Webster Fabio. Keys parp like car horns, a real trumpet blows a Don Cherry solo, but the track really revolves around its sweet Sesame Street call-and-response chorus:

“I wish love. I can love. I will love. I am love.”

Swiss gentleman DJ and Phantom Island resident, Lexx, produces a killer remix - smoothing out the OG`s jerky edges, upping its sophistication. Making clear the contributions of Lexx` new bubbling electronics. rescuing a clipped guitar, previously lost deep in the mix, and moving the children’s voices to the fore. Ensuring you’ll remember that

Idjut Boy Dan Tyler then ties up the package, well he actually kinda sends it out into space - expanding everything in echo. NYC Peech Boys-esque delay. The result is a mind-blowing, psychedelic, almost ambient, Larry Levan-like, Paradise Garage dub. Where fragments of song fly at you from four corners. Trippily pan from left to right. The horn blasts now paying tribute to King Tubby`s Hi-Fi. François Kevorkian going bang!

Emerging from the Toronto warehouse scene, Tush is a rising electronic music act powered by Kamilah Apong and Jamie Kidd. Taking inspiration from electro funk, early disco, post-punk and '90s house; their debut album 'Fantast' embodies the rawness, vulnerability, and intimacy of the dancefloor.

'Fantast' kicks off with the slow burning 'Wavy Baby', an invitation to get close, get intimate and submit to the groove: "Vulnerability is the key to us getting to that next step of intimacy". Up next is lead single 'Chrysalis', a high octane ride through a technicolour fantasy world of heady synths and driving rhythms that propel Kamilah's voice into an erotic stratosphere.

'Don't Be Afraid' is about having the courage to love defiantly, urgently, and with intention. Driven by Jamie's infectious bass lines and FX blasts, it smoothly transforms into an uplifting gospel-infused track.

Two high points of the album, 'Jessica F***' and 'Marathons', highlight Tush doing what they do best. These tracks are the sound of the warehouse scene that birthed the project in the first place and the late night jam sessions that were full of possibility pre-pandemic. Here, Tush really stretch their improvisational muscles - the interplay of raw soulful vocals, hypnotic basslines, synth pads, and heavy disco rhythms is at the core of what makes them so invigorating.

'Fantast' closes with the uplifting sunrise energy of 'My Joy', the light at the end of the tunnel. "This song is enchanted by the backing vocals of my friends and chosen family, who are my cornerstones to working through the wonderful mess that I am". Kamilah adds "The track gives me this feeling that - no matter how hard the world tries to beat it out of me - I can and I have had to work hard to cultivate my own happiness in my own sacred spaces - one of those being Tush. Ultimately, this is all I really need".

With interest in Disco as strong as ever, we continue to mine the SAM Records catalogue for Disco treasures. “Free” by Rhyze is one of the catalogue’s lesser known titles, but with its inspired rolling horn hits sprinkled throughout the song and its funk based organ and keys, it’s got all the elements for a current hit among disco and house afficionados. World renowned and Grammy award winning producer Louie Vega recognized this a few years back even before disco was back in the spotlight and gave it a massive injection of modern dancefloor energy. And now the universally recognized “King Of the Edit” Danny Krivit has put his unique musical touch on this disco funk jam. On the B Side is another disco treasure from legendary Phillie based producer John Davis. “Love Magic” had all the memorable and classic elements of the late 70’s disco era. Produced at Sigma Sounds in Phillie, the song is embued with lush strings, over-the-top funky lead guitar and throbbing bass combined with sulty female vocals singing to one of the John’s consistently superb tunes.
