Returning from the Italian excursion of Vol. 13 before the U.K. pulls up the proverbial drawbridge, Neil Diablo delivers another To Rack & Ruin winner live and direct from the Northern powerhouse. Showing some love for the finer half of the county, Neil presents the best the North East has to offer, enlisting 'Our friends from the north' Yorkshire's Craig Bratley and Newcastle's James Hadfield to do the damage on this slick split 12".
After a relatively quiet 2016, Mr Bratley shuffles his Magic Feet into the studio and sticks his fist directly into the mainframe, coming back with a pair of strangely psychedelic body movers to decorate the A-side.'Ani Kuni' bursts out the blocks in a swell of fizzing sequencer, throbbing bass and tonking mid tempo percussion, sparking away wildly like a Tesla toothbrush.
An East-meets-West affair, the track marries the thrusting electronics of Krautrock with lightly spiced Indian vocals and hippie guitar licks, conjuring visions of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi gurning away at a Faust show. Bratley retains the propulsive percussion for A2 number 'Acid Mother', syncing gurgling synth bass beneath loose funk guitars and warbling lead lines as we're slowly sucked through the wormhole.
As the track chugs ceaseless through Baldelli's cosmic terrain, rhythmic chants and rubbery bass solos reverberate through the vacuum, locking us into their other worldly gravity. Resistance is futile.We head up the A1 for the flipside, hooking up on the toon with Elizabeth Collective mainstay James Hadfield, who serves up two reheated treats tastier than your last parmo! Wielding the white stiletto and sweet sequined shimmer, Hadfield lets loose his disco juice on "Love And Affection", chucking some dreamy Gamble & Huff vocals over a dope and dusty groove.

Another solid selection of cuts, overlooked gems and classics from the deepest recesses of the KMS vaults. The legendary label should require no intro, but for the uninitiated it's one of the OG Detroit imprints, operating since the late 80's well into the future under the watchful eyes of Kevin 'Master Reese' Saunderson. The idea behind the KMS "Origins" series is to shine a light on the lesser known cuts in the KMS vaults as well as the classics that have given the label it's legendary status during it's lifetime.
Across 4 tracks here on EP #3 we have some heavy hitters for sure - Terrence Parker's stellar 'Come with me', a deeply solid soulful cut of the highest order, flipping a well known vocal sample in the process and teaming it up with some soaring strings and pads. TP is already a legend and his style is unique, tracks like 'Come with me' will always have that timeless quality. 24-7-365 was a monicker used by a young Mr. Derrick Carter (alongside George Andros) the 'Tropical House' mix of 'Sample That!' first dropped in 1989(!) and is a rough and ready robotic jam featuring all manner of samples for the eagle eared to get stuck into, proper early house sounds right here, the way it should be done - with the FUNK intact!
Side B sees a stone cold classic kicking things off - C&M Connection's 'Bio-Rhythms' leads us in, these artists would be known a little later under the guises of Altern-8 and Nexus 21 leading the UK rave charge. 'Bio-Rhythms' is Detroit leaning techno-soul of the highest order, smooth, melodic and introspective - a late night / early morning winner. The mighty R-Tyme round out the EP, one of the maestro Derrick May's pseudonyms from back in the day, here May bends genres (alongside Detroit luminary D. Wynn) and pushes a futuristic sound that is uncategorizable, sounding like little else from the time (1989!) 'Illusions' is classy, other-worldly and techno in it's purest, most crystalized form - Utterly essential!

The E.P is 4 cuts that build in brilliance from the original which has extremely broad appeal. Indian producer 'Daisho' delivers a straight ahead 4 x 4 house groover, south-London production duo Modified Man swing their analogue machines into action for a heady synth adventure, which is just a bit broken. Berlin-based duo of Dirk Leyers and DJ Nomad (Hans Reuschl) are the ideal pairing to merge technology and tradition together as AFRICAINE808 bring up the rear with a balearic sensation to round off the EP.

Makadem is a talented musician and vibrant performing artist from Kenya. He's a figurehead of the Benga scene in Nairobi. His stage presence and powerful vocal delivery, had him likened to the legendary Fela Kuti. Makadem innovates by bringing traditional African instrumentation, story telling and contemporary production methods together.

Working together for 16 years and counting, Craig Smith & Graeme Clark aka 6th Borough Project possess unrivalled experience. They've DJ'd at pivotal clubs next to the biggest names, released music on seminal labels, and cultivated a solid knowledge of everything from Jazz, funk and soul to Chicago house and Detroit Techno. Frank's Cult Of Glamour focuses his early 80s proto-house aesthetic, with two machine driven cuts at differing tempos for opposing late night moods.
For remix duties, Me Me Me asked all time hero Andrew Weatherall to deliver his own version, and deliver he does with a swamp rock lead bellied organic take of Make It Right (as well as a digital only instrumental version).

It's been a year since Francis Inferno Orchestra's last hit for Superconscious Records 'Harmony' shredded it's way into record bags across the globe, Now, twelve months on, he returns with his latest 12' 'Oasis and A Time'. The A-side consists of two versions of the lead track 'Oasis'. The 'Celestial Body Mix' which is a dreamy uptempo dance escape, and the 'Erotikk Mix' which gives a nod to early Italian DFC records and the sounds of Deep Forest. On the flip, 'Mating Rituals of the Eastern Suburbs' is a devoted chant to the humble inhabitants of the suburb of Burwood in Melbourne.

This time around Kon teams up with The Reflex to drop a summertime sure shot.
It seems MJ stopped by the lab to drop off a few sessions, heaven sent indeed. Two anthemic dance floor bombs that should rock just about any disco party.
Kon goes to work on " get on the floor ", breathing new life into it with unheard vocals, drum breaks and more.
The Reflex flips PYT, and gives it a proper work out, yet again giving a whole new twist to this tune, complete with some call and respo nse action for the ladies.

"Hold On" was their first release and boasted the studio and mixing prowess of 2 of the most legendary figures in early 80's dance music - John "Jellybean" Benitez and Daryl Payne, both of whom were behind numerous club hits of the time and rightfully deserve a mention when talking about this particular influential era of music. "Jellybean" was the resident DJ at the infamous Funhouse in NYC and he went on to work with major artists including Deodato, Talking Heads, Madonna, The Pointer Sisters and many many more. Daryl Payne also turned in a serious amount of music and was behind such underground dance anthems as Sharon Redd's "Beat The Street", NV's "It's Alright", Elektrik Funk's "On A Journey" and a host of others! You know on this particular release the quality control is of the highest standard!

Larry Levan's name is synonymous with contemporary dance music culture, his contributions are widely noted in many books and documentaries and in the memories of the lucky people who got to experience his phenomenal DJ sets at the now legendary Paradise Garage in NYC throughout the late 70's until the late 80's. His name is still mentioned with reverence today and he is listed as an influence by countless DJs and artists across the world.

Not only did Larry hold down a residency at one of the finest clubs on the planet with his impeccable selecting and DJ-ing skills for a decade, he also lent his expert ear to many remixing jobs and production sessions, adding his touch to a slew of classic dance records that encapsulated the era; Tanaa Gardner "Heartbeat", NYC Peech Boys "Don't Make Me Wait", Esther Williams "I'll Be Your Pleasure", Gwen Guthrie "Seventh Heaven" and Loose Joints "Is It All Over My Face" to name a select few.

It is Larry's peerless tastes that form the basis of this 2003 Japanese only Salsoul records compilation. Compiled by Hisa Ishioka of King Street Sounds / Nite Grooves and consisting of some all time classics dug deep from within Salsoul's vast archives. The tracks included here got regular airings on the dance-floor of the Paradise Garage and helped to form the basis of and inspire the subsequent House and Techno movements in the years following the closure of the club and Larrys' tragic passing.

Pressed onto vinyl for the very first time "Paradise Garage - The Legend Of Dance Music Vol.1" contains some stone cold Garage anthems, re-mastered and presented here in triple LP format to remind us all of the power of these timeless records, and the power of the mighty Larry Levan!

Based in New York, Sub-Urban Records was arguably the best and most consistent American garage and vocal house label there was. Co-founded by the mighty Tommy Musto under Northcott Productions, Tommy had his hand in much of the musical output from the label, and in turn this double-pack 12' collection. Documenting Sub-Urban's legacy, the album also features tracks and remixes from artists including Mike Dunn, Sandy Rivera, and Matthias Heilbronn. The spunky 'Free Me' brings together Dennis Ferrer's co-production with a remix by Kerri Chandler, whilst the Basement Boys add their characteristic groove to Next Phase's 'Piece Of Mind'.

Malka Tuti presents its first label collaboration, this time with the italian Roccadisco, and label bosses Ed Rodion and Hugo Sanchez. Ed and Hugo (aka Alien Alien) are no strangers to pitched down sexy dancefloor tunes. With previous releases on Slow Motion records they've made a name for themselves as sexy bastards. With Perfidia they present the vocalist Igino, a friend from home. Together they've boiled a slow burning, constantly evolving song for the late late hours. On the remix for the A-side Malka Tuti present a collaboration of 2 disco legends Ray Mang and Severino Panzetta, that add a medditerranian flavour to the original tune, easing things up... On the b-side we have another slow burner with Bella l'Estate, joined by a top remix by Tel Avivian prodigy Naduve.

Better known as Kemback, Geoff Wright is a Bristol based producer, selector, composer, violinist, teacher, and waiter whose music is rooted in House and Techno but often treads into the weird and wonderful worlds of Jazz, Soul, Folk, and Blues.
While his gritty drums and shuffling grooves bear the hallmark of the city he now calls home, the melodic sensibility of his emotive strings and distant glimmering synths harks back to the tree-lined footpaths of the tiny Scottish village from which he takes his name. His debut release in 2014, on Bristol mainstay Futureboogie, received widespread support from DJs as diverse as Skream, Mosca, and Nemone.
More recently his effort as part of Alfresco Disco's acclaimed Maximum Joy series, titled 'Awaken', has been likened to the music of artists including Floating Points and Leon Vynehall.
Good Night & For You Today, the two tracks on Kemback's Omena debut, showcase a high level of production skill.
To complete the package the always excellent Auntie Flo (aka Brian D'Souza) & Omena label boss Tooli take turns in remixing Good Night.

Quinn's an amazing talent (as evidenced on his recent EP for Ears favourites Aficionado), with a shining career under his Bing Ja Ling alias, as well as numerous acclaimed solo and band based side projects (Pagua on Claremont56, Coppa, The Phenomenal Handclap Band etc)
Dfferent Aspirations ploughs a familiar funk/rock furrow to his other distinctive output, elevating things (in the cosmic mix on the A) to breezy yacht-rockin' Steely Dan channeling heights.
A radio edit bakes down the hooks into a delicious bitesize piece, while Woodstock is a sublime version of the Joni Mitchell classic

A playful mixture of modern beats with deep roots Reggae influences, all heavily processed in an old-fashioned manner with a political and social messages expressed through.
Riddim Research Lab is a project from two UK based music outsiders, going under the names of Gordon Brown Jr and DJ Neeet.Lay-Far discovered their music by sheer chance, stumbling upon one of the members (DJ Neeet) in the notorious Reckless Records in London's Soho when browsing through the 'Dub' section of the shop. AN brief discussion around the reissue of Mikey Dread's album ensued, revealing the stranger's knowledge of roots Reggae and Dub.Before giving recommendations on several classic albums and saying goodbye, the man handed over a CDR with what was described as "some dub-influenced beats I'm working on with my friend. If you like King Tubby and house - you may enjoy it."
Lay-Far was excited by this unexpected gift but as it usually happens with globetrotting DJs he easily forgot it in the back pocket of his record bag.
It was not until a year later when he discovered the long-presented artefact. What he finally heard was an exciting mixture of modern beats with deep roots reggae influences, all heavily processed in an old-fashioned manner with an obvious political and social message expressed through the music.
Lay-Far directly got in touch with the duo via the email that was neatly carved into the CDR and motivated them to come out of the shadows, advising several labels they should try and sign their music to, one of which happened to be G.A.M.M. The result is now finally ready to be enjoyed by everyone, not just Lay-Far!
