Sometimes what you don't do is as important as what you do. Brandt Brauer Frick have made name for themselves producing techno without the technology, using classical instruments in preference to synthesizers and computers. It's a negative that's had positive results. On the Berlin trios third album 'Miami', it's again what Brandt Brauer Frick are not doing that is once again important: they aren't slavishly following the formula of its two predecessors. ''Mr Machine' (2011's sophomore album) the record made with the (ten piece classical) ensemble, especially was very planned and strict,' says Paul Frick. 'We wanted to be more spontaneous this time. We wanted to do something very different, more dark and more rough. We wanted to write songs rather than tracks that slowly evolve.' Another major difference is the appearance of a number of guest vocalists who had a big influence on the direction the album took. There are appearances from Jamie Lidell, Om'mas Keith (Grammy nominated producer of Frank Ocean's 'Channel Orange', Kanye West, Jay Z), Gudrun Gut (Einsturzende Neubauten and German punk band Malaria!), Erika Janunger and Russian DJ and producer Nina Kraviz. The new album is accompanied by a new stripped down live show—no ensemble this time, just the three protagonists and a specially built stage set. The visuals will be created by Brandt Brauer Frick affiliated production company Park Bennett, who make all of the bands videos and also came up with the overall visual concept for the album inspired by Fluxus art of the '60s.

NuNorthern Soul returns with an EP from talented UK soul-folk trio Abimaro and the Free. We fell for their sweet, multi-layered and poetic productions when we first stumbled across them and now we are utterly delighted to showcase their work and to introduce them to some top remixers too.

Abimaro and the Free are three talented young friends who reside in London town where they are the relaxing antidote to the city that never sleeps. Think of the folk-soul of Laura Mvula only injected with a very welcome dose of jazz expressions and experimentations. This is authentic soul music for 21st century Britain and we unashamedly love it.

Mark - The Original

The original sees Abimaro's soft poetics riding the waves of an epic, up-beat piano. For the final flourish a cinematic soundscape is conjured from the rising rhythms, bass and keys to whisk you away.

Smith and Mudd's My Everything Dub

Esteemed producers Smith and Mudd take 'Mark' into Fleetwood Mac territory by emphasising the simple bassline and chanted refrains while adding scattered percussion and spacey noises that hint at what is to come. The loping beat keeps you swaying rather than nodding until it all starts to coalesce into one dubby, progressive fusion.

BJ Smith in the Grass remix

BJ Smith's In The Grass remix finds all the parts of the track that Smith and Mudd left behind by putting the emphasis on the vocals themselves. The lyrics skip over the rhythmic guitar backing, much like BJ Smith's own music. Then, just as you are settling in and closing your eyes, the song fires into life with a reprise that brings ever more instruments into the mix for a rousing finale.

Lo Tide's Follower Remix

The fourth and final take on Abimaro and Free's original is courtesy of Lo Tide who brings forth the bassline and replaces the full percussion with simple handclaps to create a sparse number. The momentum in the track ebbs and flows, taking you to different places as winds out of your speakers. A proper jam.

Kick starting the new year, Cinematic's latest release comes from label debutant Reggie Dokes in the form of 'Child of The Sun EP'. An inspired artist hailing from Detroit, Reggie spoils us with three funk fuelled cuts via the motor city!

An inspired artist through his association with Derrick May and Transmat, Reggie is one of the unsung heroes from Detroit who's sole purpose has always been to concentrate on the music. His Psychotasia record label has been an outlet for releasing his signature sound of soul inspired deep house and techno that has gained him plaudits all over Europe. Recent guest appearances have seen Reggie release on esteemed labels such as Royal Oak, Kuumba and We Play House.

The first track 'Child of the sun' is a slow Techno burner fuelled with funk and electronic rhythms that builds, envoking vibrancy and colour before the bassline sets the tone in pummelling throughout the track.

The second track aptly titled 'Funk Below' further signifies Reggies versatility this time with a deeper mindset giving us the feeling of intimate night spots that are smoke filled with llow ceilings. Think browns and deep reds when listening to this and funk below that radar.

Make Believe compliments the release thats a little leftfield but not to be ignored. Synth laden and downtempo, the hi hats whip away providing energy climaxing with clever arrangement of strings before the whole thing gets stripped down for a more heads down moment.

Daniel Dexter, well-known for his expressive productions, presents this classical piece of house music that has one undeniable influence: Jazz. The sample might evocate a 90s Hip Hop feeling, reminding of that summer of our youth when girls still tasted like ice cream and music still came out of your portable ghettoblasters. But combining very earthy old school drums with the sax playing its intriguing twirling melody, Dexter's focus on the pure essentials gives the track an inimitable contemporary sophistication.

A2. Today (Animal Trainer Remix)

Who could put warmth into a track with long stretched bass sounds better than a Swiss That's why we have Animal Trainer straight out of Zurich aboard, emphasizing the track's laid back summery feeling by accompanying it with lots of ear tickling tinkling, dreamy synthie pads, and hand made drums. It all builds up, little by little, towards the ultimate break that will put you to the state of complete madness.

We knew that Audiojack is always a sure shot but this time they outdid themselves. They boys from the industrial allyes of Leeds made a killer track topping understated coolness with hard drums and short crisp synthie steps that pierce your brain, two goose bump moments included that will keep you wanting to just go 'yippeah yeah!!!' over and over again.

This one starts out with a pumping chicago bass and is driven pitched black vocals and swirling Rhode chords. No doubt you will end up with a feeling of standing in a warehouse back in the infamous nights when the Roland TR 808 and 909 gives off clouds of smoke. Daniel Dexter managed to create a gentle and subtle tribute to heroes like Lil Louis, Adonis or Steve Silk Hurley giving the track an advanced touch by turning it into a mélange with modern UK sound.

Gordon, who represents the science-fiction hero Buck Rogers. Buck fights a
number of villains from the mars and the outer space and we get a musical
insight in the task of Buck Rogers. The piece is dominated by the piano and
a thrilling bass line similar to the fight with his arch-rival Killer Kane.

'Buster Crabbe & Buck Rogers' ist die Inspiration für die Interpretation des
Superhelden im 25.Jahrhundert. Buster Crabbe, welcher sich auch als
Darsteller des legendären Flash Gordon einen Namen machte, verkörpert die
Person des Science-Fiction Helden Buck Rogers. Buck ist im Kampf gegen die
Tigermenschen vom Mars und allerlei Bösewichte aus dem Weltraum schwer
vereinnahmt und wir bekommen einen musikalischen Einblick in die Aufgaben
Buck Roger's. Das Stück wird dominiert von einer Piano Hook und einer
durchdringenden Bassline die sich unaufhörlich in die Magengrube gräbt,
ähnlich wie ein Handgemenge was Buck Rogers mit seinem Erzrivalen Killer
Kane ausfechtet. Wir hoffen das Gute siegt gegen die angestrebte
Weltherrschaft von Killer Kane...

Chocky's production shows the listener that with modern dance music less is some times more... Sophistication does not come from complexity here, but rather
From that unreachable art resulting from eliminating all the superfluous, so the clean soul Alone emanates from these two tracks.

Toby Tobias a multi-faced artist having recorded for labels such as Future Classics, Quintessentials, Rekids, & Delusions of Grandeur Toby add his magic to 'The Supplier' on this release & we will let the music do the talking.

Specter is enlisted to remix 'How long's a piece of String The man from Chicago reinterpretation takes us to that exquisite balance where raw vintage analogical drums melt with that unique magic of His subtle, psychedelic atmospheres.

Sometimes it's good to return to the source as this spirited production from Soul Renegades aka Craig Smith (6th Borough Project) & Ricky Reid (True Rebels) seamlessly testifies.

As the title implies this gospel referencing vocal sings passionately over infectious Jazz inflected piano along with a kicking rhythm track that is all about getting the message across.

It's the soulful energy of it all that carries the track over the course of some nine minutes while never pausing for breath.

The Instrumental version works equally well which I guess only goes to highlight the resilience of these classic influences from decades past.

James Johnston is another man who's been on a bit of a purple patch of late - not least thanks to his work on another fledgling label, Nathaniel Jay's The Love Revolution.

On 'Dance With U', he opts for a straight-up, unashamed house
palette, and one that calls on both vintage and contemporary approaches.

The spliced, echoing vocal lend it an extra momentum, but it's the simmering snares and the groove-laden bassline that help drag it in the direction of the floor.

Corbeau's Addicted sounds lifted straight out of early 90s warehouses, with its whaling female vocal sure to prompt many a 'what the' moment wherever it's unleashed.

If you've already exhausted your Strictly Rhythm, Yoshitoshi and King Street Sounds back catalogues, you might want to consider this as a more than worthy alternative to sounds
elsewhere. And even if you haven't, it's sure to do a job either way.

Closing out the package is 4 Beat Club, who inject another dose of, eh, groove back to the table thanks to 'Basement Groove'.

Canny piano keys mingle throughout, the vocal is polished and refined and the smattering of claps wrap it all up with some precision. In all, this is an EP of considerable excellence - and one that house music aficionados are sure to revel in.

Ashley Beedle and Darren Morris under their Afrikanz On Marz guise rework it to stunning effect adding the cosmic dance vibes. Already exclusively played by Gilles Peterson on his BBC 6 Music show. This is set to rock the more discerning dancefloors. Get your air drums out!

Todd Harry Rundgren (born June 22, 1948) is an American multi instrumentalist, record producer, songwriter, legend! Much loved by the Afrikanz On Marz they have flipped his In Your Mouth into a deep, dubbed out, housed up, blue eyed soul beauty. A future classic.
