Harvey Sutherland returns today with new single 'Amethyst', a jazz-leaning broken beat odyssey born out of sessions with London-based saxophonist Nubya Garcia and drummer Kahlil Memphis. Harvey Sutherland has also been confirmed to open for Little Dragon at Printworks this November, in addition to lining up an intimate headline show of his own at X on X. 'Amethyst' is the first half of a double-A-side single; along with the second track to follow soon, it will be released on a limited edition 12-inch vinyl later this year.

'Amethyst' is the next step in an already-unpredictable career from Harvey Sutherland, a producer, DJ and funk synthesist from Melbourne. After steadily making a name for himself amongst Australia's bubbling electronic underground, Mike Katz began to make international waves in 2013 with a series of successful 12' records under his nom de plume. Blending a broad array of crate-digging influences, his initial EPs have already been championed by international tastemakers like Gilles Peterson, Jamie xx, Disclosure, The Black Madonna and Pete Tong. Sold-out shows with his impeccable live band followed around the world - including Glastonbury Festival, London's Jazz Cafe and Corsica Studios - alongside some unique side-projects: Harvey recently performed an original cinematic disco suite alongside the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, as well as directing an east coast Australian tour with an 11-piece band in support of New York disco icon Leroy Burgess.

From the time Harvey Sutherland began making music, he was influenced by dance music, but not comfortable inside its rules. Still rooted in soul, disco and funk, the modern techno universe was not exactly where he fit - and so (as he continues to today on 'Amethyst') Harvey instead sought to create a world of his own. 'Looking for songs in strange places', as he says, but in ways only Harvey Sutherland knows how to look.

Part one of this exploration proved to be 'Amethyst', a transcontinental collaboration with two musicians also at the peak of their scene: London-based saxophonist Nubya Garcia and drummer Kahlil Memphis. Garcia has earned acclaim for her expressive style of playing, which has afrobeat, hip-hop and grime influences seeped into its bones rather than worn like a badge. Memphis, meanwhile, glides through complex rhytms with ease, their edges roughened up by a sensibility lifted from London's pirate radio, around which Harvey Sutherland's cosmic synths and strings orbit.

'I wanted something that had a jazz feel and lightness that was still really informed by the London broken beat scene,' says Mike now. That it's jazz is secondary - what's exciting for Katz is exploring the 'exciting, ephemeral' sensation of 'interplay, the sound of people playing together.' And whilst 'Amethyst' might signal a more experimental evolution in Harvey Sutherland's sound, you also sense his desire to bring players, sounds and global scenes together into something exciting and new is only just getting started.

For its debut vinyl, De La Groove has gathered 8 tracks to build a genuine Various Artist EP. It is willingly offering an aesthetic and eclectic overview of modern House producing.

Opening on a groove cruising track brought by Jeff Tuts, you can feel the western coast vibes grooving upon a cosmic vocal. Second track by Bellaire goes right into you, blurring lines between a very jazzy sax gimmick and a ghetto-alike vocal, a House track that might well bring up a complete dancefloor together. Third comes Knuckle G with a loud track, swinging over a heavy bassline with Rhodes tricks on top, a very dynamic track that can easily turn into a dancefloor weapon. Forth and last of the A-side, Too Many Cars signed a solid 90's house beat, carried on by a relentless drum covering a swarming pad.

B-side opens on a soulful house track blooming in harmonies, at the crossroad of jazz and discoid genre, courtesy of Le Hutin. Chinau delivers the second track, a smooth ballad dubbed with a pregnant moogish bassline sprinkled with rare piano play coating a wide string pad. For the third track, B.K Mik drops a soulful garage-house ambience, with a forceful half-broken beat thriving over a vocal jazzy background. Closing the B-side, Vanderkraft lift us over new horizons with ethnic percussions along an Indian vocal sample and a funky guitar riff, a refreshing final track.

For ANMA's sixth outing we see a coupling of two remarkable talents from either sides of the Atlantic, each taking two turns across a side of crisp wax.

First up for the US Side we have New York based Trinidadian Deep. Personally mentored by Chi-Town legend Ron Trent and with his own unique vision of soulful deep house, he has imparted us with two deeply immersive cuts of intense dance floor electricity, laced with his signature percussive club spirituality!

For the UK Flip, London based Will Lister is a name to watch out for, a young producer who can boast his first wax release being put out on Phonica's own house label! Taking things down a notch on the pitch fader, Will has provided two slow-mo jams that reward the attentive listener with his sensuous and detailed production style. Building tension meticulously before releasing energy with aplomb and polishing things beautifully with his class jazzy flair.

Fina Records strides into 2018 with another fresh new house EP, this time from PASO aka Pascal Pamme. Over the last few years this French artist has released on the likes of D.KO Records, Increase, and The Groove, and always showcases his knack for loose limbed, organic house grooves laden with jazzy keys and soul-infused synths. The four cuts he offers up here once again prove he is a producer with a truly authentic and musical style.

The warm and golden 'Idocracy' kicks things off with gently shuffling kicks, noodling chords and twinkling keys that together make for a perfectly cozy and intimate house track. 'Fuzy' is another perfectly louche and disheveled number with woody kicks stuttering beneath effusive Rhodes keys. Vinyl crackle and tinkling percussive sounds add to the immediately aged and lived in style of the track and mean it is one that will get smaller rooms well and truly involved.

On the flip, 'Limited Perception' ups the ante, with quicker drums decorated with more languid chords, plenty of smartly sampled sounds and a breezy sense of groove that is heartfelt and effortlessly feel good. Last of all, 'No Matter Where You're From' has great female vocals stitched into long-tailed pads as lazy, swaggering drums lay down a perfectly imperfect groove. It rounds out an EP of masterfully atmospheric house for those who like their beats with real feeling.

Opening the EP, 'A Matter Of Time' sets the things up with a phlegmatic tempo centered around a feverish acid line. A soft mist of organic snares, dub percussions and jazz hi-hats slip over a spacious spread of synthesizers.'Abduction' steps into a more intense dimension, bringing distorted, shamanic, high-energy drumming intended to put the listener into a trance state. The momentum is reached as a deep organ covers the whole structure and releases twirls of acid onto its mediative canvas.Closing the side, 'Harmony Of Spheres' brings the pace down again, condensing all the acid material into a drowned mechanical piece that finally breathes when pads comes in at half-course.The B-side opens with 'Alternative Currents' a gasping piece of electronic jazz centred around a play of tribal percussions and dissonant pads. 'Parsec City' continues the story with its amazing free jazz rhythm investigation, showing once again the expertise of Marini in complex patterns. Closing the EP, the shorter 'Seven Transmutation' plays with sharp acid stripes and immersed organs chords on a frame of abstract drum sequences.

Following on from the irresistible debut of Die Vögel's Blaue Moschee, DJ Koze and Marcus Fink continue on in their quest to push the envelope and fill the dancefloor with Pampa Records' second release.

Wade from Hello Records called Mr. PC "Detroit's hardest working DJ" about a year back, and the fruits of his labor shine through on this curious beatdown and jazz funk re-edit record. Strut present a brand-new edition of Oneness of Juju's Afro-jazz classic 'African Rhythms', originally released on Black Fire in 1975 and first reissued on Strut in 2002.

For bandleader James 'Plunky' Branch, 'African Rhythms' marked a significant return to his home town of Richmond, Virginia after a politically charged five years based on the East and West coasts. His personal journey had taken him from activism at Columbia University to San Francisco where Zulu musician Ndikho Xaba used theatre to 'resurrect' Afro-Americans with a new African identity. The first incarnation of Plunky's band, Juju, drew attention to the struggle in South Africa under apartheid, layering heavy Afro rhythms under uncompromising avant garde jazz.

Back in Richmond, Plunky tapped into the mid-Atlantic preference for Southern R&B and gospel: 'Juju had always been blues-based and it was a natural progression to add R&B and dance rhythms. It didn't change our message.' Produced by Jimmy Gray of Black Fire Records, the new sessions included the title track ('We wanted a song to dance to with a message - 'you are dancing to African rhythms''), the positive message of 'Don't Give Up' and political commentary on 'Liberation Dues'.

Originally just a regional hit on the East coast and in Washington DC specifically, the album gradually spread, influencing the nascent DC go-go scene. The UK revived the album during the rare groove era of the late '80s and the title track has since become a soul-jazz favourite worldwide.

Remastered from the original sessions and featuring rare photos and extensive liner notes, this new repress also features Part 1 and Part 2 of the original 45 version of 'African Rhythms' and the previously unheard 'Afrobeat', recently unearthed from the original tapes.

First Word Records is very proud to present you with 'The Offering' - the debut album by Darkhouse Family, a Cardiff-based duo consisting of Earl Jeffers & Don Leisure.

Previously releasing music under their respective monikers, Metabeats and Jamal, they've produced an assortment of sounds over the years, from Hip Hop to House to D'n'B. Connecting as a duo almost a decade ago, this merger logically saw the birth of their own unique style, comprised of a bonafide fusion of genres.

Darkhouse Family entered into the public domain via labels Fat City and Earnest Endeavours, before joining the First Word family in Summer 2016, with the 'Solid Gold' EP. This was their first release to incorporate live instruments into their signature hybrid of sampled beat-chops and electronic sonics. 'The Offering' serves up further evolution in the Darkhouse Family's sound - a progression that also embraces Jazz and Soul.

Following the success of 'Solid Gold', the duo embraced a more collaborative approach, embarking on a series of sessions between Oct 2016 and May 2017, building a bonafide family of musicians and vocalists. This notably included Kamaal Williams (aka Henry Wu, formerly of Yussef Kamaal), up-and-coming drummer Daf Davies (who was a key inspiration in the sound and vibe of the record) and strings arranger / player Jonathan Powell. Vocal performances include regular DHF collaborator, Vanity Jay, a masterful talent, Jessy Allen, and an amazing newcomer, Esther, amongst a veritable assortment of sublime Welsh talent...

The breadth of tools used on this recording very much ranged from the old to the new, from 19th Century violas, to Fender Rhodes, to Juno synthesisers. Despite the wealth of live instrumentation brought on board for the project, there was always a crate of vinyl nearby, to provide dusty-fingered inspiration whenever required. The whole mood of 'The Offering' radiates with a sense of organic fusion - retro analogue sensibilities blended with future vibrations. This conglomeration of eras, sounds and skills summarises the ethos of the project, as mentioned most poignantly in the title track, "unity is the beginning"...

Their amalgamation of styles on Darkhouse Family's previous catalogue has in turn had support from a wide-range of selectors and tastemakers, such as Tom Ravenscroft, Mr Thing, Kutmah, Rob Da Bank, Lefto, Om Unit, Huey Morgan, ThrisTian, Jon1st and Gilles Peterson, and their own turntable formidability has seen them grace the decks at Boiler Room, Fabric, Worldwide FM, Solid Steel, Glastonbury Festival and much more. This is only the beginning though.

This album is a true testament to Darkhouse Family's undiluted love of music across a vast spectrum. The end-result is quite simply a gift to the masses.

Ijsbrand & Gert had always wanted to create balkan inspired music, and hence came the duo Stavroz. Beyond just sharing the same musical tastes, these two buddies bond over both being sound engineers (live for Ijs, studio for Gert), which makes them real goldsmiths' behind each and every production (such can be seen in this short clip which presents their title The Ginning').
Their music is imprinted with original inspirations while keeping to a jazzy/burlesque influence, leaving little to be left displeased. The bridge, so it seems, borderlines between minimal and jazz-house.

The first title of the EP, The Ginning' is constructed around guitarist, Max Honckelinx. The track's instrumental harmony is skilfully constructed by the duo as they borderline minimal and deep house.

The second original title of the EP, The Finishing' is merely a dialogue between a rhythmic stratospheric universe and the sax of Nathan Daems, well preserved from the first studio recording. The end result leaves us with 8 minutes of lyricism soaked in sophistication and technicality.

In regards to the remixes, Felkon, who has been presented several times before on the Délicieuse, takes on The Ginning' by including vocals which create a more dance-like ambiance.
Britta Arnold, a legendary pioneer from Bar 25 and Katerholzig, worked on The Ginning' as well with Sascha Cawa. They delivered a version more obscure yet wickedly effective.

As for the remixes of The Finishing', Powel continues to captivate us while executing his deep and melancholic twists. He entirely redesigns the piece's structure by retiring the voice' of the sax.
And then there's our man, Viken Arman, who spins his version of The Finishing' by refiguring the rhythm pattern and adding a new dimension to the bass.

Jon Dixon, member of Underground Resistance's live band Timeline, pays tribute to legendary Detroit jazz trumpeter Marcus Belgrave. The EP features Belgrave himself (recorded before his passing in 2015), alongside additional contributions from Detroit musicians: UR/Timeline's Mike Banks & saxophonist De'Sean Jones, and jazz trumpeter, composer & educator Kris Johnson.

Reissue of the sought after birth act of the Afro- / Jazz-Parisian scene that fascinated so many musicians and music fans throughout the 70s and 80s. Comes in a heavyweight tip-on sleeve.

Ron Trent takes on the mighty Skymark original, and elevates the listener to a whole other place like only he can. Trent treats us to one of his deepest, dubbiest jams in recent years - embracing the strength of the song while interweaving his own rhythm throughout.

The original track, here on the flip, featured on Skymark's 2015 'Wave From The Nucleus' LP- a beautiful song from the sun-kissed Swiss musician and producer who resided in Rio de Janeiro for many years, and now in Barcelona.

A real meeting of minds. Both artists express their love for the deep and organic, incorporating Brazilian sounds, gospel, disco, jazz and soul in their music. Their similaraly detailed approach and ideologies blend perfectly on this 12' release.

Ziggy Zeitgeist has become a staple of the Australian Music scene. Touring and recording with Melbourne Nu-Soul/ future-jazz collective, '30/70' has enabled Zeitgeist to forge new frontiers in improvisation and drum-set application. Zeitgeist has stepped up to the role of bandleader in the debut self-titled album Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange.

A long time ago, in a Norway far far away in time, keyboardist Bugge Wesseltoft introduced his New Conception of Jazz to the world. We're talking about the late 90s, when Bugge's cosmopolitan blend of jazz, hiphop and techno beats was pretty much the coolest music coming out of Norway at that moment. That was a golden time for Norwegian music, in fact, when the rest of the world began to sit up and take notice that something was stirring up north, and realised the music was more than just glacial tones hurtled from icy mountaintops and frozen lakes. This was the sound of urban Scandinavia.

A few years later came the electronic dance genre 'space disco'. Along with Todd Terje, Bjørn Torske and Lindstrøm, Prins Thomas was at the epicentre of this next big wave to surge out of Norway. Now, the two generations have come together in this exclusive collaboration between Bugge and Prins Thomas on the Smalltown Supersound label. Jazz and electronics combine for that energising vitamin D shot of Nordic sunshine.

The Rainbow Studio in Oslo is a familiar name to anyone who follows the ECM label - many of its classic 1970s jazz albums were recorded there under the eye of resident producer Jan Erik Kongshaug. Bugge and Thomas booked a couple of sessions at the legendary space with Kongshaug at the controls, and improvised some tunes in the style and spirit of some of their favourite ECM moments, like the fresh, open sounds of Codona, Egberto Gismonti, Oregon and Kenny Wheeler. Bugge had previously done a remix of Thomas's 'Bobletekno' in 2015 but this is the first time they have worked together as active musicians. The results - also partly taped at Thomas's home studio - fuse programmed rhythms, live synths and percussion, all captured in a sumptuously spacious acoustic.

For an even more authentic touch they called up one of their all time local heroes and one of Norway's most famous jazz drummers, Jon Christensen, who's been the go-to guy for Jan Garbarek, Terje Rypdal, Keith Jarrett and many more. At 75 years he's still pretty spry behind the kit, as you'll hear on several tracks here.

Make no mistake, though, this is not retro pastiche but contemporary music, coasting on gently insistent programmed grooves and bubbling basslines. The whole thing feels not so much like a consciously hip fusion of DJ and jazz musician, more like two great musicians totally enjoying themselves. Which is exactly what it is.

Prins Thomas's real name is Thomas Hermansen. His label, Full Pupp, means 'full breast'. He's released several albums under his own name, as well as collaborations with Bjørn Torske and Lindström. Check out his amazing Paradise Goulash mixtapes.
