The Groove Brothers, AKA Jef K and Rhythm&Soul, keep things moving with the second release on their fledgling label, On A Mission Records. It's been seven months since the label's debut, demonstrating the duo's considered approach to their outlet, which has been set up to capture the true spirit of house music, basing its ideals on some of the industry's most respected labels and keeping that timeless, classic ethos alive. This second release unites the label owners with a couple of newcomers to the scene. Retaining the sultry outlook of the first release The Groove Brothers inject jazzy notes and smooth funky rhythms into their music, while Mr KS and Kub follow in a similar vein with their well-crafted contributions. KS expanding on the jazz theme, while Kub takes a more sensual pathway.

The Stateside bass collective Elevater Action's 5th vinyl release finds London based maestro Mr. Mageeka delivering 2 cuts of visceral and hypnotic house music. Previously known as MC Mega, Mageeka has been a part of the UK garage movement since it's formative years and the authenticity of his music speaks for itself with relentless and truly unique vibes. The A-side "Most" finds him at top form: swing-driven four on the floor with a timeless bass line that rolls seamlessly into soulful pads and tastefully placed chords, with a frenetic vocal hook that doesn't let up. The B Side Vinyl exclusive "Up In Smoke" features a sexy and sinister organ line leading into a bonafide sermon about Jack himself. Peppered with a swaggering vocal chant that keeps the intensity high throughout the track, the raw groove revives a classic sound into a modern context. EA's own Dylan C closes out the plate with a stripped down dub edit of Most, bringing the vibe of the original into a darker context with cryptic bass flexes and stripped down, minimal percussion while the vocal of the original melts into hallucinatory staccato.

Submerged beats, a skippy groove and a simple effective riff are the essence of the track while 'Keep On Loving' injects a glorious uplifting feel with a bouncing b-line and classic piano riff. Flipsides 'The Almighty' keeps things deep whilst 'Aliena's Groove' is one of Schatrax's signature tracks with it's haunting melancholic riff keeping the emotions high.

Bassdrums und pumpenden Beats, betören weiche Gitarren-Sounds und Hippie-esque
Flötenklänge. Der Name 'El Niño De La Flor' (spanisch für Blumenkind) kommt also
nicht von Ungefähr, sondern hält was er verspricht. Mit diesen harmonisch-
hypnotischen Klängen entführen die beiden Künstler Henning Richter und Tom Schön
zu einem Spaziergang nach Miami Beach.

Unusual tunes from PRAXXIZ Well, for this dreamy summer track the organizers of
the record label knocked the whole label concept on the head - just 'by the way'.
Where usually only real techno anthems are pressed into vinyl they allow themselves
the exception to the rule. Instead of smashing bass drums and pumping beats you'll
get an almost laid-back composition with a smooth guitar and hippie-esque flute
sounds that seduces your ears. So the title 'El Niño De La Flor' doesn't come out of
the blue and lives up to its promise. Henning Richter and Tom Schoen take you by the
hand to a nice summer walk in Miami Beach...

Tokyo Offshore Project are Frankie Valentine and Simon Lovejoy, djs and producers heavily involved in the construction of the underground UK house and electronica scene of the 90's and Japanese musician Kiyoshi Myaura. This album is a collection of their best underground house / electronica moments circa 1990-1992. POINT OF INTEREST First time on cd with 3 unreleased tracks. Simon Lovejoy is responsible for Dj Harvey's edits on their own Black Cock label and produced Björk's first electronic tunes. - Simon Lovejoy was resident at Soho's Brain, an historically important club in the development of house / techno and the first club to encourage live PA's like Ultramarine or Orbital. Frankie Valentine, dj since the late 70's, is one of London underground house finest player, still working the crowd like frenzy. Old school really do know how to work it better.

Er überschreitet Grenzen, adaptiert bekannte Klassiker und formiert sie zu elektronischer Tanzmusik.
Es war eine lange Reise zu dem aktuellen Meilenstein seiner Karriere: Sein Debutalbum SYNESTHESIA, auf dem, wie man es von Frans erwartet, elektronische Musik auf durchdachte Live-Aufnahmen trifft.

2012 sees Detroit label, KMS Records, celebrating it's 25th Anniversary.

Founded in 1987, by Kevin Maurice Saunderson, his first release was 'Triangle Of Love' produced by, 'Kreem', (just one of his many guises), little did Saunderson know, at that time, that two and a half decades later, he would still be releasing music on his KMS label.

Let's go back to the beginning... Born in Brooklyn in 1964, Saunderson moved to the picturesque Detroit suburb of Belleville, when he was nine, a different world to the urban decay of the city itself.

Saunderson has an enviable dual reputation. To the dance cognoscenti he's one of the 'Belleville Three,' (with Saunderson being the 'Elevator', Juan Aktkins being the 'Originator' and Derrick May being the 'Innovator'), the trio of friends invented Detroit Techno.

The trio met at Belleville High School where, Saunderson befriended Juan Atkins and Derrick May, who introduced him to the eclectic post-disco playlists of Detroit radio DJ Charles 'The Electrifying Mojo' Johnson. ' Johnson played disco, funk, Prince, Parliament/Funkadelic, Kraftwerk, the B52's and Tangerine Dream, to name just a few. Saunderson already had a serious love for music, but he didn't realise he was going to produce music, until then.

In his first year at East Michigan University, where he studied telecommunications, he gave up football to become a DJ himself. He took inspiration from visits to Larry Levan's Paradise Garage in New York and Frankie Knuckles' Warehouse and Music Box in Chicago. Saunderson, Atkins and May, played at campus parties, until setting up their own club in Detroit, the fabled Music Institute.

Of the 'Belleville Three' Atkins was the first to make a record, with electro group Cybotron's 'Alleys of Your Mind' in 1981, then May, with Rhythim is Rhythim's 'Nude Photo' in 1987. Inspired by his friends, Saunderson bought some basic equipment and made his own debut in 1987 with 'Triangle Of Love'. 'I just had a good ear and a good heart for music,' he says. 'Juan Atkins led me into DJing which led me into making extra beats to play in my set. Then I started learning how to play basslines, putting a lot of work in, just elevating it from there'

Undeniably, Saunderson is a gifted producer (going under guises such as Reese, E-Dancer, Tronikhouse and Reese Project), remixer and a tireless international DJ. To lovers of great pop music he's also one third of Inner City, who made regular visits to the Top 20 in the late 80s with jubilant hits like 'Big Fun' and 'Good Life', paving the way for hundreds of underground-to-chart crossover records to come.

On a visit to England in 1988 Saunderson realised that a mythology had built up around the 'Belleville Three'. To his even greater surprise, 'Big Fun' became not just a massive club record but a pop hit. He also helped to revolutionise remixing when he worked on 'We Know It' by Wee Papa Girl Rappers. Over the following decade Saunderson would continue to produce imaginative remixes for the likes of New Order, Pet Shop Boys, The Shamen, Paula Abdul and the Lighthouse Family.

Even whilst travelling the globe, djing or touring with Inner City, Saunderson continued to produce and release not only his own tracks on his KMS label (with tracks such as 'The Sound' by Reese, 'Rock To The Beat' by Reese, 'Truth Of Self Evident' by Reese & Santonio, 'Let's, Let's, Let's, Let's Dance' by Keynotes and 'Colour Of Love' by The Reese Project), but he also released tracks by other up and coming artists, releasing classic underground gems, such as 'Flash' by Fix, 'Can You Feel It' by Chez Damier, 'Soundscape' by Kosmic Messenger, 'Definition Of Love' by Kaos and 'Use Me' by R-Tyme. The list is endless.

Fast forward to 2012 and it's hard to believe that KMS is still releasing records. With such a long history, what better way to celebrate than to release a special CD Boxset. The 'KMS 25th Anniversary Classics' will be released on CD, Digital (and for those vinyl collectors, there will be 6 x 12' Samplers). Each format includes a plethora of gems which have been released on KMS over the last 25 years.

KMS may be celebrating it's 25th Anniversary, but there's no slowing down for Kevin Saunderson. He's still producing, remixing and djing (all over the world). Here's to the next 25 years....

Similar success is expected in the Netherlands, Gemany, Greece and Italy, where its signed to the major independent dance labels. So Yolanda and DCUP apply describe "We No Speak Americano" as "Party Tech." Sylvester Martinez and Johnson Peterson, aka Yolando Be Cool are rapidly becoming a household name in contemporary clubs. Their tracks have been licensed to compilations such as Fabric 59 and Fake Blood´s Wax On mix compilations and have signed tracks to Herves Cheap Thrills label.

After the very successful foray into split EPs, Luv Shack Records continues to explore this concept with LUV013. The EP sees upcoming duo Space Echo make a return after their smash hit "Soul Power", while the B-side is conducted by Wahlberliner ROTCIV. "Come Back Home", the opening track by Space Echo, is a slowly building but effortlessly captivating piece of hypnotic house music with a raw funk attitude. The gently evolving synth line and the strong vocal hook are the spine of this anthemic track. The seemingly laid back "Hangover" just oozes b-movie sleaze and might be Space Echos little hommage to 60's lounge music, with an array of distorted guitars and soft pads coming to good use. That is until the synth theme kicks in mid-track and turns the piece into a late night weapon.

On the flipside, brazilian producer and one half of "The Rimshooters" ROTCIV lays down two complex yet dancefloor oriented house tracks. "Old Good Luvin'" is a soulful house hymn that pays tribute to synth driven early italo and classic chicago house. ROTCIV intertwines the different styles to create his very own blend of deep house. "Just Take Me Higher" evokes similar feelings but has a slightly darker touch to it. Eerie John Carpenter-esque pads contrast the punchy bassline, eprom drumbeat and organ stabs to create a mood coming straight from an 80s elektro joint.

The latest jam from Thorsten Scheu aka GLANCE (stir 15) and JIMMIE WILSON ("pretender") follows the vibe of classic, timeless house music, three mixes that span a wide range.

After the success of his 'CSA EP' on City Fly's second release under his nom de plume Creative Swing Alliance, label mainstay and producer du jour Pablo Valentino is back bringing the heat to the label's latest EP. His contribution, 'Old New Swing' kicks off with some conversational dusty vocal samples and warm bass - a tried and tested formula that's synonymous with his tracks on his MCDE imprint with partner in crime Danilo Plessow. The track then slowly builds with the de rigueur diva soul vox juxtaposing with the intermittent synths and keys - personifying the track title perfectly. Yet again showcasing his production ingenuity in mixing the old and new effortlessly, 'Old New Swing' will appeal to the heads and dancers alike - one for the soul and the soles...

LAY-FAR - 'PERFECT WORLD'

City Fly have unearthed a raw diamond in the form of Russia's Alexander Lay-Far AKA Lay-Far. The Moscow native and 'In-Beat-Ween Sessions' host is already building an impressive discography with a release on Dutch tastemakers 4lux, Manchester's Development Music and more recently on JD records with Detroit marvel Terrence Parker remixing him. On to 'Perfect World' and with its dream-like harmony, yearning female larynx and warm bass, it's a transcendent production that builds up to an arresting, ethereal breakdown - elevating it above the usual house fare with its timeless aesthetic. With further releases due on distinguished house labels including Amp Art, Visky Recordings and Fifty Fathoms Deep, Lay-Far is definitely one to watch this year...

Roman Rauch's inimitable production style has seen him appear on a diverse array of prestigious house labels such as Philpot, Quintessentials, Endless Flight and MoreAboutMusic, and with his recent guest spot at City Fly's renowned club night, it was only a matter of time and a natural progression that he would feature on their next release. On this occasion Rauch teams up with the mysterious 'Perez' to form the enigmatically named 'The Royal Oberheims' and present the equally intriguingly titled 'Crash Test Dummies'. With its warm pads and bouncy syncopated rhythm, 'Crash Test Dummies' builds relentlessly resulting in arresting climaxes with acid squelches and swirling synths elevating the listener - culminating in an otherworldly groove that is idiosyncratic and infectious in equal measure. Here's to the Royal Oberheims being cast upon the throne in the house hierarchy...

CHOCKY - 'LANDED IN HACKNEY'

To round off the EP City Fly are proud to present London Town's Chocky who has already caused waves with his tracks for the Disconnected label. Taking cue from the John Wyndham novel, this was the source of inspiration for the name 'Chocky' - where an alien utilises sounds and frequencies to communicate to the world. Listening to 'Landed In Hackney' you can certainly hear the influence as in contrast to the rest of the EP this track takes the listener on a deeper trajectory with its atmospheric synths, bottomless bass, eerie jazz squiggles and haunting vox - a deeper journey that's definitely one to submerge yourself in with the headphones on. With future releases also due on Roots For Bloom and fellow Leicester-based house posse Artful Division, Chocky is one to watch out for in 2013...

A hugely promising first release from New Jack City helped established Music Is Love as a label synonymous with deep, underground house music. Now back with their second installment, MIL kick off the first of their 'Lovebox VA' series, a double- vinyl release that includes tracks from 8 artists on the label. The premise of this VA is to preview the diverse musical talent available on the roster, laying the foundations for what listeners can expect from each artists' subsequent EPs. It's also a serious exhibition that delves further into the visionary perspective of imprint owners Oli and Angus. The journey through the labels acquisitions will no doubt help illuminate the appeal of MIL as a label focused on exploring and showcasing some of the finest talent in the underground house scene at the moment. The EP is formulated to span the variety of influences indicative of the label's sound, characterized by each artist's uniquely different offering. Keep Coming is an outstanding introduction to Liam Geddes, an incredibly tight production with a heavy bassline containing shades of Kerri Chandler fused with deep chords and swirling synths that build and coalesce back into a straight-up groove. Maintaining the garage tendencies, Maxwell's Need You is all about melody, rhythm and intimacy with skittering percussion laced together with resonating, deep piano stabs and moody bass over an accentuating R&B vocal. There are head-nodding grooves on all tracks, stylized by cut-up vocal flourishes, shuffling hi-hats, groove-heavy basslines and inviting deep house/garage sounds. This mirage of house and garage can be heard on Banjax's Give it to me, a track that pieces tougher bass, dubbed chords and heavy bass-kicks to really compliment the soulful vocal hook. Jackmaster K quickens the tempo slightly utilizing the classic Happy Clapper's house sample anchored over sharp snares and a hacienda-like bassline to create a real Balearic 90's vibe. Tracks from JMX and Mikki Funk will capture the imagination of dance-floors all over with their uplifting, house rollers. The former is more garage tinged, fusing a looping vocal sample over sharp, organ stabs that build throughout while the latter embodies tight percussive elements interwoven with piano stabs, a female vocal and deep bass to give a nice contemporary vibe. It's no surprise that Jamie Trench's Juicy has been gaining some serious heat and earning plaudits from the likes of Ross Yallop and Richy Ahmed. This track nods increasingly to earlier influences with a rolling bassline that resonates with melodic similarities to Omar S' Day, albeit in a more exuberant way. Swinging hi-hats and percussive rhythms give it a hip hop-like feel, complete with a punchy vocal that descends into stripped-back dance floor house at its finest. New Jack City pick up from the success of their highly rated debut EP with yet another straight-up banger. The key with these guys lies in their simplicity. They call on classic tracks of 90s garage and New Jersey house and encapsulate what it means to be contemporary in today's era, effortlessly embellished in Just Love It. Oli and Angus have managed to collate and produce a collection of tracks that not only echo but amplify the passion that they draw their influence from. The difference in approach and outcome from each artist results in a highly impressive outcome, with 8 effective tracks that serve as a seamless statement of purpose to how contemporary house music should sound. It's not just about the musical aesthetic. The artwork is handcrafted with a unique gatefold vinyl sleeve to accompany the double vinyl release. The emphasis on extending quality in all aspects of the label has helped create a refreshing dynamic to the label, and as so long as the label owners pertain to their musical philosophy then no doubt we'll carry on witnessing some of the most promising talent in underground house on MIL.
