'I started buying Funk and Soul records from Soul Bowl in Norfolk in about 1980, John Anderson the owner had a big barn full to the rafters with vinyl, he would travel the breadth of the States - bringing back container loads of rare music. So many in fact it was a daunting prospect to know where to start in that crazy Barn... endless shelves many of which you could not even get at as there were so many piles of records stacked on the floor. It was here that I first discovered Chuck Brown & the Soul Searchers.... 'Ashley's Roach Clip' was the sort of track title that would grab my attention According to John it was 'shite' from Washington DC... from that album I hunted out many more records, slowly putting the story together and thus finding GoGo. I even went on a pilgrimage to Washington in about 1986 on a record-buying trip... Had to ship 'em back and pay a stupid amount of tax but those tunes still rock and those toms will always roll...' GoGo Get Down is the latest compilation from Dave Lee aka Joey Negro to be released on the Z Records label. A mammoth and rare retrospective of Washington DC's spectrum of Ghetto Funk, this collection showcases the visionary side of the GoGo scene while bringing its key artists the modern exposure they deserve.



Joey Negro gives us an insight into the vintage rhythms and chiming cowbells as well as the dedicated soul screams that pierce through the retro soul rhythm that gives GoGo its distinctive sound.



'As someone who has more or less made a career out of being a music lover, it's a great buzz to put together and release albums of these semi-forgotten genres like GoGo or our recent Brit Funk compilation. Many of the tracks included on this album are ultra obscure local-only releases which I've picked over my years of digging. Seeing a project like this through from the initial concept to the final product is quite a task at Z HQ and at points you can't help but wish you'd never started the damn thing ;-)



However, all of the graft is forgotten once the finished release arrives and you're listening to those bumpy DC grooves in all their re-mastered glory'

New Leng signing Auf Togo are the combination of Clement Cachot-Coulom from the Fabulous Penetrators and Sasa Crnobrnja, one half of In Flagranti.
Their combined sound is one of vintage recording equipment and instruments coupled with tweaks and blends from the modern studio. This new 12 for Leng draws on all their knowledge of the past and of the current club scene, effortlessly gliding through deep, warm analogue sounds and tougher studio techniques. Both tracks have guitar work that reminisces of a late 60's West Coast scene laid over strong bass lines and beats giving the perfect mix of home listening fuzz and a late night dance floor.

Elbee Bad is another great underground house pioneer from the formative days of NYC house in the late eighties. The True Story Of House Music finally gets told...
Like the Burrell Brothers, Elbee Bad aka Lamont Booker, is an early house producer from New York
City. And the comparison doesn't stop there; Elbee Bad has also recorded under different aliases and has also remained largely unknown to a wider audience. He has also recorded for Nu Groove Records, for which he has recorded his most famous material, but like the Burrell's he wasn't a Nu Groove fixture. Bad recorded for a slew of other independent New York house labels like Bassment,
City Limits, Easy Street, Red Heat, United States Of America and then there was his own LaRhon
Records. Almost 25 years have past since his first release 'Just Don't Stop', yet 'The True Story Of House
Music' is the first time Bad's catalog gets compiled for re-release. Although the best and most prolific
part of his catalog is his late 80's and early 90's output, Booker never stopped producing (and dj'ing).
The Nuyorican came up on the live circuit as a teenager, featuring as a drummer in his school band. When the group disbanded he decided to move forward solo. This was as at a time when hip hop and dj culture came up. He started dj'ing and experimenting with beat looping rock, disco and electronic records. He formed a dj crew and they started rocking PA's. Not long after that his first record came
out on an independent house label Bassment, which features 'Just Don't Stop'. Many singled followed on different label, including his most well-known EP entitled 'The True Story Of House Music' on Nu Groove Records. Not only does this feature various versions of the title track,
which caused a storm with djs around the globe, it also features the ambient song 'New Age Of Faith'.
The theme got used by Sabres Of Paradise who made it their own on 'Smokebelch II' which became a
landmark house and balearic record in the early 90's. Unfortunately for Elbee, the Sabres left him out
of the equation. It left a bad taste, but he kept on producing music, purely on emotion and never with a marketing mind. This is probably the main reason why he has stayed out of the limelight, yet has produced so many
timeless tracks, of which most can be found on this compilation. Elbee Bad aka LB Bad aka The Prince Of Dance Music aka Lamont Booker aka The Voodoo Man, aka
Lord KCB aka BAD currently lives and works in Berlin where he continues to work on music as well as
producing and running his Bad's Label.

A towering talent in the future house scene and one of Bristol's most adored exports, Eats Everything is about to deliver his first full EP for the kindred spirits at Futureboogie Recordings. Displaying his softer sound palate, the mid-tempo grooves of the aptly named 'Slow For Me EP' are more slinky than slamming but every bit as cheeky.
Described by Resident Advisor as a purveyour of 'full fat house', Daniel Pearce aka Eats Everything follows up the monster 'Vertigo EP' on Dirtybird with an altogether moodier trio of tracks to usher you gently into the the wintry months ahead.
A-side 'Tone Music' builds with a melodic structure of electronic droplets as rattling percussion does the driving. A n injection of techno wonk stabs blended with pitched down RnB sampling, 'Tone Music' is a sonic patchwork of futuristic beams and bleeps, synth shards, and shakers.
Moving into crackling, dubby terrain, 'Lo To Hi' is a spooky affair with solid claps and a nifty little bassline groove. As warped vocal snippets float into the atmosphere, the swirling pads serve to envelop the senses and build a sense of tension and drama up to the break.
In keeping with the slower vein and bathed in warm, ethereal pads, 'Doldrums' builds with distorted synth melodies and chopped up vox until the rise of drums, and unexpected drop of heavy bassline throb along with subtle twists of acid swerve into the mix.

Spectacular Italo disco 12' featuring two superslick synth-groovers from the mighty Klein & MBO, aka Mario Boncaldo and Tony Carrasco, whose genre-bending electro-Italo proto-house sound hit big on both the NY disco and Chicago house scenes of the early 80s. Side A slides in with the deeply electro 'MBO Theme' whose killer blend of disco-tinged techno beats, quirky 80s robotic rap-style lyrics and catchy guitar licks was a huge favourite of masters like Frankie Knuckles, Larry Levan and Ron Hardy eventually being covered by Chip E for his 'MB Dance' track on the seminal Jack Trax EP . Flip over and you are treated to the the aptly named 'Wonderful'. First we have the fantastic eight-minute disco-dub version featuring the gorgeous sweet vocals of Rosanna Casale followed by the hugely in-demand instrumental version. Sounding almost like a live mix, this tech-heavy beauty punches out synths and drum machine effects that are way ahead of their time! Minimal Italo production at its best, these tracks were played to death at The Warehouse, The Paradise Garage and The Music Box and are still DJ favourites today. Don't miss out!!
