As is often the way, this new one Instinct is as rude as flicking the bird in a pair of Nike TNs and a full tech fleece. It comes from Soul Mass Transit System, a Leeds based duo made up of D. Jason and Baby J known for their retro tinged garage bangers. 'Wine' is all naughty bass, slamming drums and jungle samples, while 'Babeh' gets more down and dirty on tightly programmed kicks, dark bass and echoing vocals that are all made for the peak time. Last of all, 'I Know' is a cluster of percussive hits and reversed effects, warped bass and twisted rhythms that make for perfect body music.

Set your phasers to wobble - Instinct is back with some of the most potent dark garage weapons they've carried to date. Rising star Holloway's "Acme" is not to be messed with, with a ludicrous, dexterous bassline to get everyone flexing like crazy. Ease Up George is taking no prisoners either with "Wicked", which sounds like it would be right at home on a classic Ghost 12". Daniele Temperilli brings a dense, experimental tint to the shuffled 2-step funk of "Smog", and Raynor seals the deal with the low and growling menace of "Round Off". If you need any proof the UKG scene is in rude health, look no further than this 12".

Eros’ Go For It is a fearlessly original take on Paradise Garage disco, mixed in a way that feels equally Mad Professor and Walter Gibbons.

The story of Eros begins in a high school in Vauxhall, New Jersey in the mid 70s when four kids began a friendship based around their mutual love of soul, funk, rock, disco, and bands like Earth, Wind & Fire and Funkadelic. Assanouan G’Bado, Fletcher Gaines, Bobby Jones and Mike Freeman started off jamming after school, playing occasional gigs in New York and honing in on an original sound. When the group graduated, Assanouan and Bobby went off to the service and Fletcher went to university.

Eros reunited in the late 70’s and began taking things more seriously, producing a set of songs with the intention of getting a deal with Motown. The morning after recording a full album’s worth of material, the group flew to Detroit hoping to sign a record deal. The legendary label was interested in the songs, but made them an offer that didn’t feel right for the group. The songs were shelved and Fletcher and Bobby moved on to new ventures.

Mike and Assanouan pursued a self-released single on their own DAP records, reinterpreting two of their Motown demos with drum machines and overdubs to fill in for their two missing bandmates. Go For It was their individual take on disco, and the new 1985 remake took the AOR-oriented demo version, and transformed it into a transcendent dance floor illusion, that, in an alternate universe, would have turned dancers at the Paradise Garage upside down. Similar to Stephen Encinas’ un-classic, the song mutates deftly at the half-way point, opening up into a stripped-down and dubbed-out denouement, adorned in cascading electronics and the soaring vocals of Barbara Green.

Go For It is the first of two releases from Eros on Mixed Signals, and pairs the group’s expanded electronic remake with the original Motown version, rescued from the last surviving demo cassette. Stay tuned for the unreleased demo album Motown missed out on, slated to come out later this year.

New Japanese label "amidst" debut EP by up-and-coming Colombian-born Canadian producer and DJ, Cosmic JD. The tracks stand somewhere amidst solid Techno with a Garage twist, cosmic funky Deep House, trippy Downtempo and epic Ambient.

Dark Entries returns to the New Jersey basement studio of Smersh to unearth an 18-minute jam session from 1989, backed with two contemporary remixes. Smersh was the duo of Mike Mangino and Chris Shepard from Piscataway, NJ who began making music together in 1978. They were uninterested in traditional notions of songwriting or live performance. Between 1981 and 1993 they released over 40 cassette albums on their own Atlas King imprint. As these tapes traded their way across continents, Smersh developed a devoted following in places far beyond New Jersey, leading to releases on dozens of other labels from around the globe.

Sideways' was taken from a cassette titled '100', which refers to a 100-minute jam session the band recorded to tape on June 12, 1989 in Piscataway. The track was composed and performed by Mike, utilizing a Roland TB-303, TR-606, SH-09 and an ARP 2600. A frenetic hybrid of techno and acid with driving EBM style beats, Sideways' weaves intricate industrial noises with synth melodies that drift in and out of phase. On the flip are two fresh remixes by different aliases of prolific Ann Arbor producer Tadd Mullinix. As JTC, he expands the sound palette, adding organ stabs and lush pads, drawing on Detroit deep house and UK garage.The Charles Manier remix features chanted vocals on top of an array of pulsating synths, stark percussion, and post-punky guitar effects. Each song has been carefully remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The record is sleeved in a replica of the '100' artwork, which designer Eloise Leigh modified using motifs and textures sourced from the original cassette. Also included is an oversized postcard with notes.

Orbital London, a label with UK flavours embedded in its ethos. They mark their next chapter with the ‘Dartford Crossing’ EP featuring founder, Jack Michael and on fire producer, Alec Falconer.

Time to get busy! ‘Holding it Down’ ignites the EP with it’s killer broken drums, splashes of acid, and old school vocal sample. Essentially everything you want from a 90’s rave anthem, but in modern times. Alec steps up for his ‘Over the Bridge’ interpretation of ‘Holding It Down’ a simpler structure than the original, but not to be underestimated. A squelchy bass line infused with garage drum work.

On the flip Falconer provides ’40oz’ a progressive arrangement which leads you in to a feel good energy, with infectious keys, and pensive pads. In return Jack conjures up his ‘Through the Tunnel Mix’ of ‘40oz’ taking things up a notch with its bending twists and turns, a gritty heads down affair from the talented producer.

The raw sounds of the producers and the Orbital London tenacity strike again, maintaining their status as an essential label.

Mystery white label launches with a single-sided 12" that blends familiar UK Garage samples along with rolling tech house beats.

MASC, the dynamic duo made up of Mark Archer and Shadow Child return to Super Rhythm Trax with an absolute belter of an EP. The A side hits you in the gut with 'Nine Oh' and 'Yih', two hard, funky and intensely tunnel vision tracks almost reminiscent of 90's Dan Bell and DJ Hyperactive in their outlook. Flip the record for a real treat of a remix from Dance System (Night Slugs/Clone etc) of 'Eye Feel' (the breakaway hit from the last MASC ep SRTX 024) where genres and tempos are thrown in the blender to create a masterful and extremely fun version that's as effective as it is playful. The EP is rounded off with 'WKP', a wistful ode to the pairs love of late 80's freestyle and electro.

For DSD023, Bailey Ibbs serves up a killer with his ‘Gurl’ EP. The A side delivers 3 Bailey originals, each serving up a different mood best suited for the dance floor. Where the B side provides 3 completely different flips of ‘Gurl’ delivered to you by Groovy D, Denham Audio & AK Sports.

dle Hands opens up 2021 with a new record from Dream Cycle. While being a new name on the label they continue on from a stellar run of records for Social Sneaker Club. Here they continue their exploration of the hardcore continuum via dubby garage, mellow house and electro.

Record opener ‘Jump Blue’ starts with dreamy pads creating blue moods; opening up into choral pads and a bouncy bassline reminiscent of early records on the label by Facta and Shanti Celeste. Next comes ‘All The Things’ which heads straight to the dancefloor with a swinging 2-step beat, chopped vocals and dubby chords.

On the flip ‘Sonntags’ is an electro track based on subtle keys and suspended chords. Perfect for the end of the night for those willing to experience the journey to the very end. Closing the record we have Deep Dream G rolling at a very casual 92bpm; low tempo vibes with style and grace.

Inside Out is a brand-new series that invites DJs and producers to blur the boundaries between traditional artist albums and mix compilations. Coming from Aus Music label head and DJ-Kicks curator Will Saul, the concept encourages artists to showcase their own music and or the music of those in their own individual circles. The mix will be release digitally and on CD, while a selection of the tracks will also be available on double gatefold vinyl.

Each instalment will feature 100% new and unreleased music. It is a chance for artists to take sole creative charge, A&R as they see fit and then commission brand new music specifically for the cause. Depending on who is at the helm, Inside Out will take different forms: producers may wish to represent their own sound with only music they have made themselves or with close collaborators, while DJs and label heads may wish to reflect the sounds and scenes that surround them. The results will be a window into an artist's world that works as a coherent mix, but also as a treasure trove of fresh new music that steps outside the usual lines of a dance album.

The idea stems from Will Saul's own approach in the club, which often finds him seeking out brand new and unheard music to play for the first time. That feeling of taking people into the unknown is one that reminds him of the energy and excitement of his early days as a dancer.

For Will's mix he enlists an array of artists who he's worked with over the years, many of whom have released on one of his labels in that time. These include the likes of Lone, Pearson Sound, Move D, Gerd, Youandewan, Martyn, Falty DL, Dauwd, Appleblim and Marquis Hawkes.

Mak & Pasteman finally make it to UTTU, something that has been in the works for a while, DJ Haus launches a new off-shoot ‘Dancetraxx’ for the occasion and here we are with Volume 1. Two tracks, a Deep House number and the crazy cool Garage inspired “T2000”. Fresh from their release on Lobster Boy which is out now.

Off the back of the “Dartford Crossing” EP with Alec Falconer, label founder Jack Michael returns for a solo outing with four dynamite productions entitled, “South East Vice”.

“Mr Nice” has a killer sidewinding bass line which sits comfortably between the gentle synths and deeper vibes of the track. Title track “South East Vice” creeps with a more mysterious and serious energy, jam packed with sounds of the early rave days.

On the flip “Rampage” does exactly as it says on the tin, urgent, and direct, the ghetto vocal pays homage to garage sounds of the past, grime like synths flash in and out - going back to the roots. Showing no signs of slowing things down, the B2, “The Grotty Choir” is a slick and pacey broken beat number, with speedy shuffling drums and chunky bass, on a jungle tip.

Another display of dance floor bedlam from Jack Michael and the Orbital London outfit, enforcers of modern day rave moods out of the UK. Prolific sounds once more.

The past few years have seen UKG come right back around with a host of new producers and legendary heads alike, laying down 2 step heaters and 4x4 rollers to satisfy the appetite of the garage crew out there. Certified royalty, Tru Faith and About 2 are no exception, back in the studio and taking either side of this 12 inch for a double dose of sweet swung, US tinged garage gold, that will be sure to cause back to back wheel ups in the dance.

Already getting heavy plays on Kiss, Rinse, Flex, Centreforce alongside a bunch of the other pirate and underground stations, you know this ones gonna be good.

Cologne's Johannes Kolter made his name as DJOKO, but his most recent outing under that alias for Talman Records also included a pair of tracks credited to Kolter. It's that artistic alias he's chosen to use on this single, which introduces the world to debutant imprint PILOT. It's an EP that's well worth checking out, not least for deliciously bass-heavy opener 'Went Too Far', a weighty, stab-happy and sample-heavy affair that recalls the occasional electro tracks made by early blepe & bass and hardcore producers. Garage-influenced breakbeat workout 'Get Into It' is another funk-fuelled treat, while jungle-influenced breaks shuffler 'Selectoor'sic is a bass-heavy beast. The German successfully rounds off a fine EP via 'Illumination', which reminded us a little of Orbital's most melodious early moments.

Stepback Records returns in 2021 with Dunning Krueger – First Love EP. Krueger (Waze + Odyssey’s Street Tracks, Massa Records, Me Me Me) makes his debut on Edinburgh's own Stepback Records with 3 cool cuts, mixing influences from house, garage and 2-step. Backed with an impeccable remix from London's finest Mr Beatnick (Don’t Be Afraid, NTS) - First Love EP delivers a sumptuous and versatile release on Stepback Records.

New Jersey's Toothgrinder have been active since 2010, hitting their stride with their debut album Nocturnal Masquerade in 2016 and following it up sharply with Phantom Amour. Quite rightly their breakthrough album, it saw the band amp up all aspects of their sound, from the powerful pop-minded harmonizing to the hyper-sheen of the guitars. Embracing an electronic attitude to production that adds a hi-tech finish to their full-fat, emo-tinged songs, it's a perfect document of a band with a lot to say and an irrepressible energy. Now repressed dude to popular demand, the album once again takes up three sides, with the fourth given over to an etching.
