German techno and house composer Tim Engelhardt takes you on a deep dive into his peculiar-yet-relatable world of musical meanderings with ‘Idiosynkrasia’. True to the nature of idiosyncrasy, the album is more than the sum of its parts.

‘Idiosynkrasia’ is an ode to the inspiration Tim finds in all kinds of spaces and places: each cut woven from the same cloth of meticulously formed melodic structures and expertly crafted harmonies, gently amplified and unfettered by genre. From the opening track it’s clear that Tim has a profound awareness of rhythm and sound, his background as a pianist lending an easy fluidity to the album as it expands and contracts to tell a story which is gentle, humble and reflective.

Using granular processed recordings of piano, floating strings and other instruments to transmute emotions like love, nostalgia, vulnerability and longing, the album shifts through meditative, flow-state inducing tracks, morphing into cuts designed for dancing it all out.

Take it straight, mix it up or down: ‘Idiosynkrasia’ is cinematic in form and orchestral in structure, each track is marked with Tim’s unique sonic signature and careful attention to instrumentation.

Inhale the spirited and lively flow; exhale and surrender into epiphanic moments: this is an album which will catalyse deep breaths, reflection and a different way of thinking.

Moving into the summer, Phuture Shock Musik strikes back with their next release ‘A New Day’ EP, which sees Bristol soulful house don Sean McCabe join forces with Barcelona’s shining bruk export Damian Botigué, aka Karmasound, for a collaborative 3-track EP. In addition to the production pair, the project also features guest spots from US soul sensation Erik Rico and upcoming Barcelona-based artist Mabreezee, altogether making for an exciting, international all-star line-up.

Frankfurt dynamo Shan, fresh off the back more eclectic fire for Running Back and Live at Robert Johnson, get's to dive into the legendary Candi Staton vocal vaults, and comes back up with 'One Day' : classic sounding, piano-lead house on the Deep Mix, tough, big floor bumper on the Ruff Mix.

Remixes come from fast rising Bristol newcomer Litherland and Phonica's Earth Trax, both strong, with breaks and piano's on the former, space and widescreen dub all over the latter.

"Civis Jams" ist eine brodelndes Werk aus schlummernden Strukturen und ruhigen, kraftvollen Songs. Die Vocals haften an den Rändern der Mixes, was ihnen einen intimen und zugleich kryptischen Klang verleiht. Dieses Gefühl wird nochmal verstärkt durch Darkstars nachtaktive Produktionsweise von Drums und Synths. Zu den Highlights gehören die Tracks "Wolf" in bester Mount Kimbie-Manier der "Cold Spring Fault Less Youth"-Phase sowie "Jam", ein potentieller Peaktime-Banger, den Darkstar aber sanft und mit der Schärfe eines Jai Paul interpretieren. Nach ihrem Hyperdub-Debüt "North" (2010) und den beiden Warp-Nachfolgern "News From Nowhere" (2013) und "Foam Island" (2015) haben Darkstar mit "Civic Jams" ein Album mit grandiosen Unterwasser-Nachtsongs erschaffen.

The name Hugo Mari might not ring a bell just yet, but we've got a feeling this is about to change real soon. He's released a handful of EP's under his former alias Books on Omena and XVI including his own edit series on the latter label (check out his killer track 'in the groove or his jazzy deep house collaboration with Zodiac called 'Feel it in my Bones'). Considering he's also remixed well known artists like afrobeat legend Dele Sosimi and grime master Trim, you might share our view of this amazingly talented and versatile producer. His 'Change ur ways' EP for Heist is soulful, jazzy, deep and energetic with three varied originals and a classic soulful house remix by man of the moment, NDATL label head Kai Alcé.

'Get Loose' features the silky-smooth vocals of Zodiac, some lovely solo work on the Rhodes and a 'free jazz' vibe on the horns. There's a constant funk bassline looping throughout the track to keep the energy going while the loose arrangement as well as the drum programming give the track that care-free feeling of a never-ending live jam. With that, 'Get Loose' is a great club track that crosses the boundaries between funk, jazz and house.

The title track still has that jazzy feeling but moves towards a quirkier territory with some 'Frits Wentink' style harmonization, detuned piano's and loosely chopped samples. There's a definite gospel feel to the track, thanks to the choice in vocal chops, which is complemented perfectly by a filtered disco bassline. The percussion layer and rhythmic elements are full of energy without ever crossing the line where of subtlety that makes this track so catchy.

On the flip, there's 'Feel ur senses', the most straightforward deep house track of the release, that gets its mood from an ongoing tremolo on the Rhodes pads. Space bleeps, bells, a hidden arp and 'reverbed-out' hits give the track an almost balaeric sound that will certainly put a smile on your face.

The B side is complemented with a vocal and instrumental remix of 'Get Loose' by Kai Alcé, who has been throwing out one killer tune after the other, remixing Volcov's Isoul8 project (one of our favorites of the year), as well as kicking out releases on his own NDATL label. Kai goes for a full-on soulful house vibe, giving his own chord progression center stage along with a set of rimshots. He chooses to leave the horns out, and instead work the vocal, Rhodes, and cowbells from the original to great effect, adding a little solo work of his own on a bell-like piano where he freestyles happily throughout the track and copies the vocal for added harmonies.
The instrumental version is perfect for those moments where you're done with all the vocals and just want a tight soulful groove.

Balearic trailblazers Psychemagik take the controls for the B side, creating an atmospheric extension which is low slung and laid back but still dressed for dancing. Building a haunting riff into the main refrain, they lead us through nearly 12 minutes of floatation tank funk awash with heart-swelling strings and cascading keys. As the breaks and bass intensify, the track swells into a true end of night anthem for the horizontal dancers.

Featuring the sultry vocals of New York based Kendra Morris, the slinky and catchy album version of 'Same Old Clown' is joined here by deeper re-workings from USA DJ and re-edit king Kon (Kon & Amir, Nitetime), who provides both a vocal and dub remix as well as UK producer Linkwood, known in underground circles for his groundbreaking mix of future-boogie, house and detroit techno on Scotland's excellent Firecracker Recordings imprint.
Guitarist with the band Antibalas, multi instrumentalist and guitarist, Chico Mann (AKA Marcos Garcia) has in the past worked with the likes of TV On The Radio, The Roots and Dam Funk as well as remixing Little Dragon and Alice Russell amongst others.

New Zealand DJ collective 'Flamingo Pier' return to Soundway Records with their "Indigo EP". Their previous release, the eponymous Flamingo Pier EP in February 2019, was the beginning of their relationship with Soundway, garnering support from industry peers including Gilles Peterson, Tim Sweeney (Beats In Space), The Black Madonna, Gideon Coe, The Wire magazine, JD Twitch and more.

Drawing inspiration again from cosmic disco, Afro-house and and Italo - Luke, Brad and Dominic hone their craft further on the Indigo EP with tight percussion, balanced arrangements and hardhitting grooves. The EP was recorded in Auckland and London over the course of 2019, with additional contributions from local New Zealand collaborators: percussionist Isaac Chadderton and brass player Finn Scholes.

Berlin native Florian Kruse has been a key part of the underground house and tech house scene for years now, and his productions have rightfully been bringing him plaudits for their emotional maturity. Finding a kindred spirit in German vocalist Hendrik Burkhard, as TheGround the pair have crafted a killer new album - 'Dediction', including these four exceptional tracks that will appear on the vinyl edition 'Dediction EP'. 'Homeless Hearts' exemplifies the duo's effect on each other - the slick, nuanced and spacy production gives way to a powerful groove, providing the perfect backing for Burkhard's dreamy vocal. 'Undercover' is a clear dance-floor killer, with Kruse's exceptional flair for programming meeting Burkhard's understated delivery. Co-written by Raphael Hofmann 'Silence' explores some melancholic terrain before finding its way back to the floor via Kruse's & Burkhard's lush production. The EP is concluded with 'Creature' - featuring a thick growling bass and precise, arpeggiated synth lines that cut through the mix like lasers.

Multi Culti is honoured to reissue this 1996 classic by Ghanian highlife legend Gyedu Blay Ambolley, adding amazing remixes by Red Axes and Johnny Aux, as well as an in-house edit by Dreems & Thomas Von Party.

A major force in Afro-funk since the early 1970s, Gyedu Blay Ambolley is considered the godfather of hiplife, transforming the highlife genre by adding elements of hip-hop, funk and jazz. The opportunity to reissue the amazing and influential "Simi Rapp" is one of the clear high points of the label's trajectory thus far.

The reissue package is bolstered by an ecstatic rework by Israeli gurus Red Axes, an early-morning anthem from master remixer Johnny Aux, and a laid-back house edit from Multi Culti Executive Shamans Dreems and Thomas Von Party.

"Winter in America", diesen Eindruck gewinnt Johannes Brecht beim Anblick des sozialen Klimas in der westlichen Hemisphere. Eine Mischung aus politischem Eiswind, turbulenten Glaubensfragen und Veränderungen des gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalts. Diese Themen verbinden Johannes Brecht und Fetsum sowohl persönlich als auch in künstlerischer Hinsicht, so dass ihnen als grosse Gil Scott-Heron-Fans, aus unterschiedlichen Richtungen kommend, nichts näher lag, als dessen Klassiker "Winter in America" in diesem Zusammenhang als Vocal-Deep-House-Track neu zu interpretieren. Zusätzlich liefert Brecht mit "Crystal" einen Tune, der statt wie üblich am Sequenzer bei einem Live-Jam am C15 Synthesizer entstanden ist.

E.N.M. steht fur Endlich Normale Menschen (E.N.M. stands for finally normal people, editor's note). This double opus, compiled by Low Bat, can be considered as a collection of friendships and encounters, where phlegmatism and melomania are intertwined. It includes tracks by F. Æmbient or Vamilienfa†er, two sheet metal artists from the Berlin experimental scene with their respective labels, Kashual Plastik and Bohemian Drips, as well as a track by Dame Area, a Barcelona duo that Low Bat booked during their 4 years of Berlin penitence.

The nine tracks oscillate between two main lines. The first record offers to discover a palette of more introspective feelings, where twilight layers cross broken rhythms and almost acidic progressions. The second, on the other hand, allows one to step by step to break away from this approach and look at introspection in a different way, alternating between unbridled joy (4K - Schabernak) and consistent melancholy (3H by Blume Attempt).

Catapulted into the public consciousness by Beth Ditto, Kiddy Smile seeks to spread the retro love in his beats - all of which he produces, sings and sometimes even raps over himself. Deeply influenced by the sleazy, lazy feel of 80s and 90s house music and the fabulous legacy of the Ballroom scene, he has performed live alongside the likes of Hercules & Love Affair and The Gossip. Through his own music and performances, Kiddy has kept the nostalgic sounds of the dancefloor very much aliveBio : Via his extravagant persona and good music, the parisian producer Kiddy Smile gets great coverage in the music world, but also fashion (he's the sound designer for Balmain, and spins for the like of Alexander Wang, Balenciaga shows etc.) and queer community.It's impossible to dissociate his music with what he represents today in the gay and voguing community and many filmed / photographed features celebrating diversity have highlighted Kiddy Smile in them.

When you inject church into soulful house in a most subtle and
effective way, you get the newest release from Kalim Shabazz in
the form of “Joy”. What I like about this track is the fact that it is
not overpowering like a lot of spiritual house tunes akin to this
one. The vocalist delivers and doesn’t try to compete with the
world or themselves. The subtly of Shabazz’s production is
perfect and grounds everything as it clocks in at about 126.5
bpm.

DJ Kemit’s The Lounge Lizards Remix of “Joy” (126 bpm) adds
that ATL sound with a little bit of an extra bounce and groove
but doesn’t take away from the feel of of the tune. The remix
production fits the vocals just as easily as the original. It is a
safe bet for either to be a choice mix for the DJ. Highly
recommended!

Today's headliner was quick to steal our hearts, as we fell hard four months ago for his title « Swept Away » made in collaboration with his friend Mr. Gramo.

The two buddies were once students at the Hochschule der populären Künste (University of Fine Arts) in central Berlin where they studied sound design amongst many Berlin newcomers of the current scene such as Egokind, Marlon Hoffstadt, and 4nton.

We first soothe our way into the delicious world of Parra for Cuva with their piece « Fading Nights » seducing you with a hypnotizing beat, making way into a magical moment between Nicolas and Anna Naklab, as his faithful sidekick's vocals exuberate powerful emotion, yet still maintaining a lightness. Let your mind adrift as a thrilling sensation takes over...

Enter a state of release as the EP adjoins under the title « Small Flowerd », a track which oozes of mind blowing sensuality. The duo creates a natural ease and is sure to fulfil your devastating hunger. A melodious air overwhelms, sending us further into the depths of our imagination.

It's a journey, a haute couture production which comes to an end with the mastered version of their forerunner title « Swept Away », once again enhanced by Anna's sublime vocals, skilfully accompanying a punchy and exhilarating melody. A piece with returning synths and ethereal arpeggios affirming their undeniable loyalty to the style of Deep Pop', a main reason for teaming up with our German counterparts.

The A side features an analog approach for a solid, instrumental techno, enriched with harmonica’s riffs. B side keeps a live techno touch, but flavored with house vocals and thought beats.

Raised in Corsica, Stephanie made a name for herself as a dj in Paris but more recently focused on producing her own sound. The roots of her musical style are deeply entrenched in Pop, House and Ambient music, all genres that to her reflect our human desire to express our feelings. Her heartfelt debut, AUTEL, released on new label Lake Of Confidence, is an invitation to be fully present in the moment and listen to ourselves with awareness. The track "Disarm" is an uplifting tonic for the soul and could not have come at a more fitting time, encouraging the letting go of fear. Stephanie's grounded voice and the tender tones of the music take us on a liberating journey and reminds us of what is important in life - to move beyond ourselves and embrace joy. The captivating "Unchain" and the Superpitcher remix of the track, are both powerful guides for deep contemplation. Each beat is a metaphor of the breath of life, space and the impressive vastness of this extraordinary mystery we live in.

'Lost Spirits' is an exploration in sounds for dancing. Catalysed by the catastrophe that was 2020, Hidden Empire step off the stage and retreat to the studio on a quest to find out what moves the people.

They seem to have found it. One out of the box, this 16 track album is designed for diversity. Hidden Empire oar their creative rudders, lending their hand from techno to deep house with a cheeky reach-around to a more downtempo vibe.

The first three tracks send you down the rabbit hole on a toe-tapping, hip-slapping aural escapade to the heavier edge of techno, the sublime vocals of Artche taking you directly back to those dancefloor moments when time stands still.

Taking the stairs two at a time in polyamorous heels, you’ll fall in love with the sassy, classy, savage vibes of ‘Resurgence’ and ‘Dark Matter’.

Transitioning to a more tribalesque vibe is ‘Organic Train’ a cut which blends the primitive, esoteric influence of the old world with the punchy, industrial sounds of the new world. Continuing on the exploratory sound voyage of downtempo, broken beaten space techno, ‘Mr. P’ stands in the forest listening to the plants talk to the people. Bebetta slips in with her inimitable style in the collectively inspired ‘All of Us’, keeping the Fun Dial turned right up.

Delving deep into the tundra, ‘Hectic Dreams’ become reality as the album turns towards the chunkier end of the musical spectrum. Punching out the bass-heavy bangers like 'Once Upon' (with a cameo from South African slam poet & spoken word artist The Lazarusman), Hidden Empire roll out with a flurry of cuts that are limitless in genre and luminous in effect.

The ‘Lost Spirits’ album is a nod to the certain kind of limitless magic which happens when people come together, without preconceptions, to get lost in the music together.

On the A side of their - Lovecream EP' Schlepp Geist & Benotmane give a very seductive proposition and at the same time they created an irresistible mantra: - My head is burning, you make my machine clean, my love cream is waiting, so let's become a dream team.' If this is not convincing to move your feet, the B side will do. Because here hides the next ear catcher. - Stuck in my Head' is to be taken literally. Simon Jinadu's fascinating and soulful vocal performance burns itself into your mind with the same strength as on his guest appearance for Deep House icon Jimpster. As usual - Lovecream EP' comes as a 10inch vinyl release in a limited edition and numbered by hand. As a digital bonus track, but no less valuable for that, Rampue gives this release a more hypnotic and dreamy component. It's really too sad that there's not enough space on these vinyl records.

SoSure Music continue to celebrate the legendary work of ‘Directors Cut’, one of house music’s most memorable partnerships. This time Frankie Knuckles and Eric Kupper’s euphoric vocal house classic, ‘Get Over U’ feat. B Slade, gets the rework treatment from esteemed US DJ Tedd Patterson and Berlin-based Chambray, alongside an edit from Sami Dee and Frankie’s own Mr Director’s ‘Feels Good’ Dub, which has never been released on vinyl until now.

The package opens with two brand new remixes. First up is Berlin-based Chambray who has previously delivered a range of dancefloor bombs and worked with the likes of Laurent Garnier and DJ Haus while establishing himself as a respected name in underground music. Here he delivers an energetic and contemporary House meets disco rework, bright and uplifting with piano stabs, electronic claps and brilliantly reworked vocals.

Next is esteemed US DJ/producer Tedd Patterson, who throughout his career has earned the title of House Music royalty and is regarded as one of the best-known house DJs in the world. He delivers a remix that retains the classic house feel; verging into disco territory with big strings and jazz influences whilst always maintaining the dancefloor focus.

The B-side focuses on the original mixes that Frankie and Eric produced in 2012 which still sound just as fresh today. Sami Dee serves up a brilliant edit of the Director’s Cut Mix while Frankie’s own Mr Director’s ‘Feels Good’ Dub takes the final slot, a cut which has never been released on vinyl until now.

Two new remixes from very different and unique artists, both paying homage to the original, whilst bringing a fresh new direction. Combine this with the original Director’s Cut remixes on the B side and you’ve got the perfect package - one which would no doubt have received the seal of approval by Frankie himself. Altogether it is feel good house at its best.

The first What About This Love release sees the Detroit outsider Javonntte and the Berliner-Italian Deep88 on a real underground raw house song, matching the Detroit soul house with the rawness and liveness of the Italian producer, creating an epic vocal track, something that could have been made in the golden age of house music. On the flip there's the Melchior Sultana treatment, a name that is rising release after release thanks to his works and nothing else, playing all the kinds of instruments and being able of using sequencers and drum machines creating a perfect balance between a real musician and a serious house producer, add to all this a Deep88 remix and a Javonntte amazing dub version and the WATL01 is served.
