The prodigiously talented Tim Engelhardt returns to Watergate for his third EP outing.

The young producer has been industrious throughout 2020; he released a new album ‘Idiosynkrasia’ on Stil Vor Talent, remixed Trentemøller and gifted Watergate another excellent EP, ‘Rooted’, among other activities.

‘Prophecy’ EP continues his touch for crafting exquisite compositions that evoke a warm cocoon-like atmosphere. The title track places his sound design skills at the fore, as tender melodic flourishes run
alongside a hummed vocal line, piano and swelling pads. ‘Polygon Particles’ is an intricate acoustic jam centred around a chunky bassline, lilting synth and keys, which builds towards a feel-good finish. The evocative ‘Connected in Silence’ rounds out the trio of tracks, driven by a crisp percussive core and wistful widescreen soundscapes.

We are delighted to announce that July 2023 is the month in which you will finally be able to know the new Apparel Wax product: Apparel Wax Mini. The Mini catalogue (dedicated to 7-inch vinyl) fits into the narrative of our masked hero as a sort of prequel, as the 'Mini' vinyl represents the 'childhood' of Apparel Wax, his life before its music started to be heard around the world. Another novelty is that the first release is double. In fact, APLWAXMINI001 and 002 will drop on the same day, both containing two tracks, one on each side. With a physical product of different size, we have also adapted the graphic design of the project, as you'll notice looking at the record. A new adventure begins in the world of the masked artist who, this time, will tell another musical story created by the now famous anonymous collective of phenomenal artists behind the project. Produced, arranged, and composed primarily by Prince, it incorporates musical elements of funk, dance, and rock music. In 2003, the album was ranked number 204 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Josh Milan’s 2020 collaboration with Patrick Gibin and Kaidi Tatham has been a real highlight for Neroli. "Love To The World" represented a joyful and musical reaction from the gloomy climate of the year, a message of hope and joy. This message resonated also on Theo Parrish who decided to make his own reinterpretation of the song.

Essex-based producer Ruffien returns to Deeptrax with his debut album – To Win in Silence. Though made in just under a year, it is a collection spanning a decade’s worth of personal growth culminated into one package - documenting the meandering highs and lows of his own private metamorphosis, as he blends impulsivity with styles contemporary, soulful and nostalgic.

For the first time, Ruffien features his own vocals on some of the tracks, which makes the album feel more like several torn journal entry segments falling into place. His intent is to be as unambiguous as possible to get his points across – regardless of how grand or intimate they may be; To Win in Silence doubles down on that intent.

Damian Lazarus’ Secret Teachings imprint welcomes a unique project from Malian and French pairing Siraba, unveiling their debut single ‘Ngana Fôlly’ alongside remixes from Philou Louzolo and Peaking Lights. Meaning ‘The Great Path’ in Bambara, Siraba - the duo consisting of Malian hunter Boubacar Samake and Damien Vandesande, one half of French electronic band dOP - are on a path of bringing the traditional sound of the Wassoulou to the world. They met in 2003 when Damien visited Mali to work with local artists and met Boubacar’s father - the legendary Sibiri Samake. Working together on multiple occasions, the two promised to work with one another and Boubacar on a project one day, and 17 years later, the two connected to begin to develop their unique sound and showcase their shared universe.

Inspired by the music of the master hunters from across Mali, the ‘Dozo’, the project transmits values based on justice and righteousness, love and respect for others, moral and spiritual rectitude and protection for everyone. Debuting on Damian Lazarus’ Secret Teachings imprint, an outlet for the Crosstown Rebels boss to delve deeper into musical realms outside of the norm and away from the dance floor, the pair will release their debut album in September, with a series of live performances set to be announced. Their first single arrives in early June with ‘Ngana Fôlly’

A spiritual and hypnotic production rooted within Dozo musical tradition, featuring Boubacar playing the Ngoni while singing in Bambara, ‘Ngana Fôlly’ is a resonant and rich production combining organic textures with warping synths, rich bass and sweeping electronics, capturing the magical essence of Mali across a fascinating journey. Providing the first remix on the package, Dutch DJ/producer and DJ Mag ‘Artist To Watch for 2023’ Philou Louzolo harnesses Boubacar’s vocal and places it at the heart of his soaring remix as stripped-back percussion and a commanding low-ends guide sweeping synths, before handing over to San Francisco husband-and-wife pairing and Dekmantel signees Peaking Lights who tip things down a bright and blissful rabbit hole of soundscapes as vibrant guitar riffs and twisting leads work amongst off-kilter melodies and acid flecked tones for an eight-minute trip.

Veteran DJ and co-founder of Manchester Digital Music Archive, Abigail Ward, launches her new Ghost Assembly identity with 'I Miss Your Love', a raw and emotional homage to late 80's Chicago house.

A locked-on Fingers-esque melody bassline, pounding pianos, Italian organs and widescreen minor-key Solina strings will yank even the shyest onto the dancefloor early doors, but it's the mysterious, yearning, female 80s soul accapella that elevates the track to future classic status and has already seen the scene's most clued-up scratching their bonces for an ID.

'I Miss Your Love' was expertly mixed by PBR Streetgang's Bonar Bradberry through his Bozak mixer (the same model it is believed Larry Levan favoured), which imparts its own special magic, ramping up the hiss and Garagey authenticity.

It's no wonder that when Abigail sent the track to Ruf Dug, Manchester's much-loved tropical cyberpunk, he leapt at the chance to unleash it via his revered Ruf Kutz imprint, and a promising creative partnership began.

Abigail says of her debut:

‘Yemaya’ is the long-awaited new album and Tru Thoughts debut from future soul and electronica duo Anushka. Released on limited edition transparent numbered double vinyl, the LP takes its name from the Orisha Yemaya – the Goddess ofthe Sea, protector of women and the Eternal Mother in the Santeria/Yoruba religion. It is believed in Santeria that Yemaya guidesand supports her children, helping them to grow; as explored with the reference to the life-giving essence of water in focus track“Bad Weather”. Celebrating their progression and those who have helped them on the way, the title expresses the oneness that theduo felt making the record.

This growth is explored on album opener “So Far Journey”. Written by Victoria Port (singer/songwriter) as a “call to the ancestors”,the track explores coming back to yourself and who you truly are after a period of feeling displaced and lost. Garçon Voyage is the first single in French from Courrier Sud's upcoming EP on Délicieuse Records. The song paints a fresco of that special and unsettling moment at the beginning of a relationship when one of the two falls in love, but isn't sure if they'll be loved in return. Its rhythm is heady like a beating heart, set to a mix of minimalist synths, somewhere between Metronomy and Flavien Berger.

King of Town (KoT), originally from Johannesburg but now in the UK, is back after a nearly a decade hiatus from his mutant disco-inflected remixes.

Prior to his long break, King of Town remixed the likes of Franz Ferdinand, Slow Club, Alice Russell, the Detachments and the Phenomenal Handclap Band.
His remix of Desmond and the Tutus' 'Kiss You on the Cheek', released on Tigersushi in 2009, has become a regular feature of Spotify playlists and has racked up a few million listens across various streaming platforms.

For this release KoT serves up four exclusive re-edits.

Lord Have Mercy is a retouch of Willie West's slow-burn R&B lament of his own elegiac defiance, where KoT underpins West's groove with a 303 acid bassline and synth flourishes.
Swimming in Your Eyes is a beefing up of Pasteur Lappe's 1979 Rhodes-heavy space disco groove.
Troubles of this World takes OV Wrights ridiculously soulful take on a gospel classic and transforms it into a retro-futurist track aimed firmly at the dancefloor.
And with Khomo Tsaka Deile Kae KoT nods towards his roots and inserts drive and snap into fellow South African Marumo's 1982 kwela-touched stomper.

As always the artwork has been completed by the very talented Pedro Carvalho de Almeida.

In an age of regressive politics and inward-looking neo-nationalism, there’s something gloriously open and outward-looking about the musical worldview of Rose Robinson. A keen traveller whose mindset and musical vision has been shaped by her experiences visiting different destinations around the globe, Robinson’s releases as Tigerbalm thrillingly combine her roots in dance music – Robinson has been DJing around her home city of London and much further afield for well over a decade – with rhythms, sounds and instrumentation inspired by all manner of indigenous musical cultures from around the world.

This trademark sound is sonically kaleidoscopic, unflinchingly percussive and undeniably infectious, though attempts to accurately describe it are likely doomed to failure. While confounding those employed to review music not Robinson’s aim – she was much more interested in fusing her eclectic global musical influences and showcasing great female vocalists – her brilliant debut album, International Love Affair, will surprise as much as it delights – and all for the right reasons.

It arrives on the back of a string of celebrated singles and was created with the help of a large archive of recordings of jam sessions with musician friends, and contributions from a talented pool of female singers Robinson has met on her travels around the world. It’s those travels that shaped the sound of International Love Affair, with every track being a personal response to the musical cultures of places she’s visited. Combine these vivid experiences with nods to dancefloor-focused styles she loves – think organic house, nu-disco, Afro-house, dub disco, Afro-disco and Brazilian club cuts – and you have a debut solo album that’s as imaginative and entertaining as they come.

For proof, check the album’s two Bali-influenced tracks: album opener ‘Kete’, where Joy Tyson’s stylish vocals ride a heady, low-slung midtempo groove wrapped in Indonesian instrumentation, and the extra-percussive, tech-house influenced dancefloor voodoo of ‘La Brisa’ (a cut named in honour of the Bali-based club of the same name). Or for that matter the two tracks inspired by Robinson’s experiences in Berlin, the Joy Tyson-voiced strut of ‘Tokyo Business’ – a dense, squelchy, dark-room ready blend of heavy grooves, punk-funk inspired vocals and ‘80s freestyle synth sounds – and the irresistible peak-time heaviness of ‘Cocktail D’Amore’, a track made in tribute to the legendary LGBTQIA+ party of the same name that sits somewhere between Afro-house, tribal house, dubbed-out late-night hedonism and the most mind-altering of organic percussion workouts.

Robinson’s positive experiences on Waiheke Island in New Zealand, the location of the legendary Flamingo Pier festival, are explored on two tracks, too – superb recent single ‘Waiheke’ and the inspired ‘Cosmic Camel’ – an impeccable, breathlessly brilliant re-imagining of the mid-80s proto-house sound of Paul Simpson and Boyd Jarvis (amongst others) blessed with cut-up Maori vocal samples and the kind of hazy, dubbed-out horn licks that have long been a feature of records by New Zealand outfit Fat Freddy’s Drop.

Such is the quality across the set, attempting to pick highlights is a futile gesture. Some may cite the breezy, Brazil-inspired samba-house/funky nu-disco of ‘Bahia Escapista’ (this features a very special ‘secret guest’ vocalist, whose identity will no doubt promote debate online), or Robinson’s response to visiting Morocco, ‘Riad De Lister’ – a squelchy chunk of 21st century P-funk that’s as heady and intoxicating as it is addictively dancefloor-focused. An instrumental version of that track is also featured on the album, alongside a handful of other vocal-free alternative takes.

Taken as a whole, International Love Affair more than lives up to the promise of its title, marking out Robinson as one of electronic music’s most inventive and on-point global fusionists.

Few artists strike the balance between the classic and contemporary quite as effortlessly as The Vision. Striving to produce meaningful
and honest records, their latest single ‘Mountains’ makes an apt follow-up to their incredible breakout hit ‘Heaven’, the vocal house record that garnered support from BBC 6 Music and Radio 1, as well as tastemakers that ranged from Joe Claussell and Gerd Janson to Gilles Peterson.

‘Mountains’ illustrates the duo’s ability to create records with boundless dancefloor appeal, without forgoing a drop of soul or emotion, as melodic keys and rich instrumentation bring Andreya’s stirring vocal to life.

Sounds vary from the original 80s synthesised boogie of Colors, the early disco house of ‘Love Fantasy’, through to the mid-tempo grooves of Sunburst Band featuring Leroy Burgess. All reworked by the good Doctor. That’s right, this EP is just packed full of Packer.

Z Lovecraft AKA Rhythm Section International's Mali Baden-Powell, offers up four originals on the Utopia Club Tracks label that showcase the disco/house end of his varied output. 'Exotic Passage' coasts along serenely with gently slapped bongos and warm electric piano, definitely a weapon to have in one's warm up arsenal. 'Release (The Tension)' ups the heat a little with a busier bassline, filters and disco licks, before B-side opener 'Lust In Denial' comes with more jazz-slanted piano riffs and 'People Get Too Deep' closes proceedings with the most spacious and dubby arrangement of the quartet. Musically refreshing and understated but lively enough to move feet onto dancefloors, this is the business.
