Todd Terje, Four Tet, Prins Thomas - Jungelknugen (remixes)

That's right folks, the Todd is back, bucking trends and shucking conventions to bring us two tip top reworks of an as yet unreleased original.Taking the console for A-side manoeuvres, Four Tet scans the star maps and picks out a particularly jazzy path to a distant dance floor dimension.Over on the flip, Olsen regular Prins Thomas gets in on the action. After the show it's the after party and before the album it's the remix single! That's right folks, the Todd is back, bucking trends and shucking conventions to bring us two tip top reworks of an as yet unreleased original. Now you can't trust any old knob-twiddler with an assignment this specialist, so it's only right that Terje invites a pair of esteemed audio experts onto the ISS Olsen for operation 'Jungelknugen'. Taking the console for A-side manoeuvres, Four Tet scans the star maps and picks out a particularly jazzy path to a distant dance floor dimension. Hanging a left down Myrtle Avenue, the Text boss takes off with a surge of spectral arps, swelling sine waves and shuffling percussion, the sweet syncopation of off-beat piano leaving Earth's atmosphere in the rear view mirror. The ship shudders as we head for hyperspace, unleashing a booming bassline so weighty it has its own gravitational field - perfect for keeping the dancefloor packed like interstellar sardines. Over on the flip, Olsen regular Prins Thomas gets in on the action, rocking a retro-futurist remix which reps vintage R&S, Dutch electro and Sheffield bass on its way down the space techno highway. Pairing an infectious breakbeat with nagging sequences and full bodied subs, Thomas tunes up the rhythm section, tickling our collective fancy with a particularly x-rated bassline. Up at the top end fluttering keys blur into the nebulous swirl of dopamine-drenched vocals, ensuring we're in for a full frequency assault. Part robot - part raver, this snarler sounds like a secret Decepticon mixtape snatched from Soundwave's chest-deck and re-routed onto the blackest wax for your late night pleasure. So there you have it, a two track party platter packing spacious bassweight, astral jazz and abstract grooves from the minds of Four Tet and Prins Thomas. As for that Terje original, who knows We'll have to wait until the LP to find out...

Nadia Ksabia - Virtual Lover (Jordan's Nocturne Edits)

Repress!

Originally released in 2013, ‘Virtual Lover’ was the debut single from Nadia Ksaiba, the East London DJ icon best known for her joyous sets at beloved queer space Dalston Superstore.

Fast-forward to 2020, and Ksaiba’s ‘Rhythm Connection’ with Dan Beaumont, is one of NTS Radio’s longest running shows. Meanwhile, as Phantasy approaches a landmark 100 singles, ‘Virtual Lover’ still sounds timeless, masterfully channeling boogie, Italo and disco reminiscent of early Madonna to classic Midnight Star. With this in mind, Phantasy are delighted to offer a new perspective on Ksaiba’s club hit with two spellbinding edits from Belfast born and based DJ/producer, Jordan.

On PH28RMX, Jordan refreshes the energy of ‘Virtual Lover’ with two additions to his already beloved series of Nocturne edits, which have earned multiple represses having gained huge support from the likes of Erol Alkan, Midland, Gerd Janson and Kornel Kovacs.

With an analogue touch, Jordan deftly shifts the casual call of the original into a lean slice of brooding freestyle electro, transforming Ksaiba’s charming vocals into a robotic paen, yearning across a futuristic grid of deeply satisfying bass. ‘Jordan’s Nocturne Dub’ achieves a similar effect driven by a frenetic, chopped-up vocal amid cybernetic flourishes.

DAZION - A BRIDGE BETWEEN LOVERS

Following up on the 2017 debut EP 'Don't Get Me Wrong’, Dazion returns with his second release on Second Circle.

On his latest EP; 'A Bridge Between Lovers’, we hear the Dutch multi -instrumentalist take even more unexpected swerves and turns in the form of fi ve new tracks recorded in his home studio in Den Haag. Setting himself loose from any musical confines, his process develops spontaneously; a Spanish guitar connects with an Indonesian wind instrument, wood sticks are channelled through a gritty sampler, while weird drum pattErns make their way out of Alesis HR 16-B and Yamaha computers. The results of these recordings are a fluid yet familiar Dazion sound; typically utilising electronic and organic sounds in his own distinctIve way. As with its predecessor, the tracks on ‘A Bridge Between Lovers’ are heavily rhythmically fuelled as well as rich in melody. Not least during another collaborati on with the Portugese vocalist Paulo on the alluring opening track ‘Eu Ñ ao Sei’, where Dazion again radiates what he himself calls, his "musical message of love to everyone".

Breaking their hiatus after their celebrated Steeplejack debut, The Night Chemist follows up on their previous outing – and the beast has evolved. Various - Attack The Dancefloor Vol.14

Z Records unstoppable ‘Attack The Dancefloor’ series powers it’s way to its 14th Volume of remixed disco gold.

Delia Renee - You're Gonna Want Me Back (Joey Negro Disco Blend):
"You’re Gonna Want Me Back” was an all but forgotten early 80s obscurity only known to hardcore vinyl collectors. Joey Negro has got hold of the original multi and has transformed what was already a very strong song into an end of the night anthem. Delia’s vocals are classic power soulful vocal disco diva, whilst JN makes the most of the parts in the fully orchestrated live backing track.

Foreal People - Shake (Dr Packer Re-Shake):
Originally released in 1999 the Joey Negro revamp of GQ’s Chic like “Shake” features David Grant from Brit Funk act Linx on lead vocals. It's back out 20 years later with a fat funky Dr Packer remix, who drops down the bpm and adds a more dubby approach to the arrangement.

Z Factor - Gotta Keep Pushin (Grant Nelson Remix):
A classic from the ZR back catalogue gets a brand new makeover from Grant Nelson, making it an instant dancefloor hit.

Four80East & CeCe Peniston - Are You Ready (Joey Negro Redemption Mix):
Brand new gospel tinged soulful house originally produced in Toronto by live jazz funk act Four 80 East featuring the powerhouse vocals of Ce Ce Peniston. It has now been remixed by Joey Negro for release on ZR. The Redemption Mix showcases the full song which harks back to the big vocal records that came out of NY and Chicago in the late 80's/early 90s.

Another indispensable ATDF 12", destined to cause waves across dancefloors worldwide.

Glenn Astro - Homespun

Glenn Astro

Homespun

12inchTARTALB014
Tartelet Records
20.10.2020

Five years after his critically acclaimed debut album Throwback, Glenn Astro returns with his deeply personal album Homespun.

Marking a change in course from his first release on Tartelet Records, Glenn Astro is set to showcase his sophomore album Homespun, a testament to a visionary artist who has come into his own. Made up of ten tracks spanning 45 minutes, the record twists and turns between electronic meditations, soulful vocals by Ajnascnet, and futuristic electro, carving out a world of spacey eclecticism that is as nostalgic as it is experimental.

“This album is in all facets different from the first one, which was a deliberate decision. No vintage sounds and references, no sampling, combined with futuristic sound design and song structures.I tried to keep it as current and intuitive as possible,” he says.

Known for his chunky beats and fuzzy textures, Glenn Astro has released on labels such as Ninja Tune and Apollo, leaving a distinctive signature on everything he touches.

But Glenn Astro has quietly been crafting a new sound for himself. Sometimes taking detours – morphing into his dark alter ego and experimenting with artist collaborations.

The sound of Homespun is a culmination of several years of reflection and artistic development – however, the album itself was produced in less than three months. “I set myself an ultimatum to finish the album within three months. If I didn’t make it, I’d
have to rethink my career path and keep music as a hobby, he says.

On the introspective first single and album title track “Homespun,” Ajnascent’s vocals lend a sincerity to the melancholic production. “It’s about the regret of not taking chances and giving in too much, but also about taking responsibility and being honest with yourself. Homespun is a nod to nostalgia and a desire for simplicity and prudence, being equally the culprit and the cure,” elaborates Ajnascent.

On “The Yancey,” an homage to J Dilla, Glenn Astro paints his vision of contemporary dance music with shimmering melodies, deep ambient soundscapes, and advanced drum programming. “Moreira” and “Look at You” feel like spaced-out electronic funk hybrids, while “Taking Care of Business” goes back to the future with Glenn Astro’s take on jungle. Other tracks such as “Mezzanine,” “Slow Poke Flange,” and “Viktor’s Meditation” provide the finest dubby electronics.

Identified Patient & Sophie Du Palais - Aborting Your Dreams

Having already debuted on the Pinkman main label, Identified Patient now steps up for the Pinkman "Broken Dreams" series for your stripped back content. The whole EP is furnished with the sinister and commanding vocals of Sophie du Palais, also known as 'Vrouwe Fataal,' creating an infectious vortex of panic and scare to abort your dreams. Throughout the release, hazy percussion is carefully seasoned with the bitter synth lines and guitar riffs from Lasznkioff. The first track, 'Peaceful Panic' is in full seduction and fetish mode, setting the scene for the better corners. 'Sleep Without Rest' violently tightens up the leather and gives you your kicks for thrills. The EP ends with frenzy: messed up intermezzos with Lasznikoff, mixing up an 808 with his destructive guitar rig and, as he states, 'everything is done.' Tashi Wada With Yoshi Wada & Friends - FRKWYS Vol. 14 - Nue

Composer Tashi Wada has performed for years with his father Yoshi Wada—artist, composer, and early member of the Fluxus movement. However, they have rarely appeared together in studio settings. Nue, the fourteenth entry in RVNG Intl.'s intergenerational FRKWYS series, finally brings Tashi and Yoshi, along with an eclectic group of close friends and extended family, together on tape.

Nue draws on aspects of Tashi's background for his widest vision to date—among them the minimalist bagpipe music of Yoshi, who co-composed three of the tracks, the psychoacoustic and perceptual explorations of his mentor, composer James Tenney, and reimagined forms of ancient and devotional music. The album, however, is not a tribute to the past or a recapitulation of familiar sounds. Instead, Nue is an intertwining of people and ideas as a means of growing, of looking inward to move outward, and of looking back to move forward.

To achieve this growth, Tashi assembled a core group of fellow travelers, including Yoshi, composer Julia Holter, producer Cole MGN, and percussionist Corey Fogel, to give life to this multifaceted suite. As an experience, Nue subtly navigates the interactions, intimacy and spaciousness of this group.

The album's title itself is a nod to Tashi's abiding interest in duality and the unknown: nue is a mythological Japanese chimera with the face of a monkey, the legs of a tiger, and a snake for a tail, a composite form, at once disturbing and otherworldly. But, as the composer points out, nue is also French for naked—stripped of complexity, bare and exposed, but also raw and essential.

From the doubling of tones—and the world of harmonic nuances such an action produces—to the rich interplay between individual musicians, all baring their own personalities and experiences through shared performance, Tashi's compositions allow space for these elements to join and grow. The multipartite creature that is an ensemble melds in the simplicity and purity of the music itself.

As explained by Tashi, each part was written with an individual in mind, not simply an instrument. And each individual performer makes their mark, from Holter's vocal performances on the cresting, oceanic 'Mutable Signs' and 'Ondine' with guest vocalists Simone Forti, Jessika Kenney and Laura Steenberge, to Fogel's resonant, precise percussion on 'Bottom of the Sky.' Producer Cole MGN, who has worked extensively with artists like Beck and Ariel Pink, helped to create a world of sound with minimal yet multi-dimensional materials. Like many of its influences, Nue uses deceivingly simple means to create complex, coherent worlds and narratives.

Tashi notes the influence of legendary Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector, whose work looked inward, investigating memory and emotion and dream, to understand the often overwhelming world outside the self. Like Lispector's classic novel Near to the Wild Heart, Nue cleaves these archetypal dualities—world/self, old/new, complex/simple—to create a work that allows them to coalesce into something singular.

As Tashi states in his liner notes: 'My desire was to create something both old and new sounding—ancient and futuristic—and ultimately something of its own world and other. Nue is a vision, an endless night of dreams, and a personal history of sorts, full of joys and demons.'

Nullptr - Future World

Nullptr

Future World

2x12inchCPU01011000
CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT
30.06.2020

Two years after debuting on Central Processing Unit with the acclaimed Aftrmth EP, Nullptr returns to the Sheffield label for the release of new full-length album Future World. Nullptr has created a set of perpetual-motion marvels here, wind-'em-up-and-watch-'em-go electro tunes in which synth lines and 808s weave dexterously in and out of one another to form these lovely interlocking patterns.

Many of the tracks on Future World are anchored by needlegun grooves in the Drexciyan mode. The album's opening number 'Arrowhead', an eerie dystopian-electro take, sets the scene in this regard, and cuts like 'Cytron' and 'Phantom Cell' also have a rugged bump to their low-end - particularly the latter, which features a deliciously nasty bassline drop about halfway in.

While busybody drum programming persists throughout the album, Nullptr's fondness for washed-out pads means that Future World also provides the listener with space for contemplation. Third track 'Sweet Luna' may be robust enough to do damage on the dancefloor, but its deep chords and relatively muted bassline also push it in the direction of 90s electronica and IDM-techno. 'Sweet Luna' opens the door for many of the subsequent numbers to balance driving beats with wistful textures, and while electro remains Future World's core style the harsh sound of machine-funk is softened throughout by these warm synth tones.

Rather than playing it safe within the genre's familiar confines, Nullptr instead uses electro as a base from which to incorporate other sounds throughout Future World. 'Wave Cannon's bleep-bloop modulars and twittering hi-hats are pure robo-funk, but the track's jumpy bassline shows off a sense of adventure derived from braindance. There is also the ghost of a breakbeat in Nullptr's snare programming here, something which lurks in the back of 'Arvanche' later in the tracklisting. Meanwhile the uptempo 'Bit Device' pushes through to the ruminative techno of Virginia's early Ostgut Ton releases.

Nullptr throws us another curveball in Future World's home straight. The album's title-track closes the record out, and it's a cut which takes us deeper than anything that's come previously. Here Nullptr both lowers the tempo and also does away with drums, leaving the listener with little more than some hanging-garden synth pads and pregnant bassline. It proves to be a hugely atmospheric coda for this delightful album.

FFT - BRUK1

Fft

BRUK1

12inchBRUK1
BRUK
30.04.2020

"BRUK" is a new platform for fresh variations on the soundsystem ethic, in particular where high-end sound design intersects with formidable bassweight. It's an artist-focused endeavour geared towards producers with range, depth and ingenuity in their sound.

The first transmission comes from "FFT", the latest alias from accomplished producer Josh Thompson. Thompson established the Super Hexagon label with long time friends J. Wiltshire and Arthur Scott-Geddes and he's also released on heritage label R&S (as Alma Construct) and the excellent offbeat techno upstarts Power Vacuum, and more recently developed the FFT moniker via essential drops on The Trilogy Tapes as well as Super Hexagon.Thompson helps launch BRUK with a two-pronged attack that shows off the breadth of his artistic scope.

The lead 12" is a dynamic club release that pivots between razor-sharp drum programming, hyphy synth acrobatics, breakbeat science and dub-loaded atmospheres. If there's one constant that runs through all Thompson's work, it's a resounding confidence with melody, and that comes through even in the rowdy chops of "Month" – a track that exudes hope even in its gnarliest bars. From the dreadweight minimalism of "Fask" to the expansive electronica shock out of "Sacrifice (The Truth Mix)", this is a head-twisting release that feeds into the vital new energyreverberating around the 150+ axis.

Accompanying that 12" is a cassette album which provides that polar opposite side to FFT – a collection of compelling beatless ruminations under the banner of Total Self-Fulfilment. Gliding from low frequency industrial textures to expressive synth modulation, this is far from static music, even as it moves without the aid of a traditional rhythm section.

It's a strong first chapter for BRUK, with future releases lined up from artists similarly poking at the fabric of contemporary club music to find their own unique spaces for expression.

MONO HAN - BELOW THE WAVES LP

Mono Han are brothers Alessandro and Davide, who collectively have a deep and long understanding of electronic music. Davide is a co-founder of N.O.I.A, one of Italy’s first electronic live acts to perform and record with drum machines and synths as early as 1978. He was also behind seminal Italo outfit Klein + M.B.O and proto-house hit “Dirty Talk”. Alessandro, following in his brother’s footsteps was inevitable and he too became hooked on the incredible new sound palette emanating from the early electronic machines.

Since then they have released under an array of aliases, have clocked up numerous club hits and this project brings them back to their 80’s roots.

Various - Kaputt.wav Compilado Vol. I

Bogota based venue Kaputt kicks starts the label side of things with seven track compilation featuring Alejandro Paz, Nuclear Digital Transistor, Eddie Mercury & Mijo, Rodion, Kabinett, Damon Jee & Ravintsara, Alvaro Cabana & Julian Sanza.

Born from the new Bogota based club who’ve invited the likes of Call Super, Axel Boman, Kornel Kovacs and more, Kaputt launch a brand new label from the enigmatic streets of Colombia’s capital.
Bogota is a place where the underground scene has recently built a new sound of resistance, a sound that sets the local scene alight through unity and community and is now moving on to break down
international borders.

First up is Alejandro Paz, a Chilean musician and DJ whose music is characterized by vocal displacement and musical selection, full of dark Latin American material. His track 'Bogotá' is a lively
dark disco cut with rugged bass and angular rhythms that are finished with some acid melodies. Eddie Mercury then links with Mexican Mijo for the frazzled bass and dystopian bleep-disco cascades of the
excellent 'Chundify.'

The Nuclear Digital Transistor duo is two DJs from the Bogota scene, Pal and Pizarro, who have released on the Ombra International label run by Curses. Their 'Borrador 9' is cosmic groove with crisp
boom bap drums, hits and plenty of stepping arps that reach for the skies. Rodion is from Rome and is regarded as the “new genius of Italian Dance music” after releases on Gomma, Eskimo and City
Slang. He shows why with the chugging dark disco anthem and freaky vocals of 'Processare.'

Critical Monday boss Damon Jee has released on the likes of Correspondant Records, Roam and Hafendisco and is well regarded by from the likes of Joris Voorn to Chris Liebing. Here he links with
Ravintsara for 'Medea' which is filled with post-punk energy, tense synth progressions and real dance floor darkness. Next up is Kabinett, the darkest side of Colombia’s Nicolás Saavedra, co-founder of Nomada Records and someone who offers up 'Don Kebab' here - a skyward track with big disco arps and twisted bass all gliding along and getting the floor under its spell. Last of all, Alvaro Cabana &
Julian Sanza link for 'Psychedelic Advise' which is moody and haunting, with stark hits and metallic synths that ride over rugged and macho drums

Coil - Astral Disaster Sessions Un / Finished Musics Vol. 2

*** Ltd. Edition 300 Copies on RED VINYL with insert! ***

These rare recordings were recorded as part of the legendary prescription label album series in the late 1990's that resulted in the album "Astral Disaster". Coil were invited to record at Sun Dial's studios beneath the London Bridge Hop Exchange. This studio was originally know as Samurai studios that was originally built and owned by Iron Maiden.

The premises in Victorian times was an old debtors prison which had three levels underground, and still had the original chains, manacles and wrought iron doors from the old prison. This caught the attention of John Balance and was very keen to record there.

At Gary Ramon's invitation, Coil spent a number of days recording at the studio during Halloween 1998 and they developed a number of tracks some of which resulted in the "Astral Disaster" album. For various reasons, some of the unissued material and mixes released on this album were omitted from the original Astral Disaster album, and so now is the opportunity to listen to the second volume of "The Astral Disaster sessions".

The album includes all previously unissued mixes and alternative versions, and includes "The Mothership" which was the first version that was later remade in the sessions as "The Mothership and the Fatherland".

Taken from the master tapes and remastered by Denis Blackham.

WHITE MANE HORSE / DEPUTY BENDER / UHU / THEORY OF NOISE / OLLOY / RNBWS - Apophenia

If you can feel a chill in the air it must mean there's more arcane sorcery being cooked up in the Blind Allies labs. This Latvian label are surely providing some of the strongest strains of pitch-black underground electro from lesser known operators in the machine funk catacombs. On this new various artists 12", White Mane Horse and Deputy Bender fire off sleek and sinister rhythms while UHU has a little tongue in cheek fun behind the veil of icy whispered vocals and nervy bleeps on "No Body Knows Electro". Theory Of Noise sound taut and robotic, Olloy keeps things plush but noirish, Rnbws fires off a high-definition sound and Theory Of Noise returns for the simply brilliant "Mission".
