The fourth Express Rising LP (and second featuring the expanded lineup of William Suran and Kevin Blagg, in addition to leader Dante Carfagna) finds the trio largely eschewing percussion in favor of twelve concise, three-minute-or-so-long bittersweet excursions that nevertheless retain the restrained, measured, and highly melodic scaffolding of their previous work. There's more than a bit of Santo & Johnny at their most somnambulant here, slightly glazed, definitely reverb'd out, mysteriously bottling the flaring, saturated light of the desert at dusk.

The womb is the Stargate of Humanity' says Ras G relating to the title of his third and strongest full length for the LEAVING label. Ras is more than your L.A. beat-scene beatmaker/producer/DJ, but rather an influential OG with an admirable no-fucks-given attitude towards liberally experimenting with fidelity and genre in the Los Angeles underground producer scene since the early 2000's. Ras has released multiple projects on luminary labels such as Brainfeeder, Poobah, and Fat Beats.

Following up his now sold out Redef debut (1996 Beat Tape, Vol 1), veteran producer DJ Spinna returns with another wave of hard hitting instrumentals. Entitled, Unpicked Treats Volume 1, the Jigmasta' Spinna has prepared the first of an ongoing series of beats that all have a similar story. Making tracks for well over 2 decades, this latest project features a small collection of beats that were created with the intention of backing MC's and vocalists, but were never officially used. Rather than archiving the material, DJ Spinna realized his fan base would appreciate these compositions in instrumental form. After all, he is the same producer who has garnered respect from the likes of J Dilla, Pete Rock, Jazzy Jeff and yes, the one & only Stevie Wonder himself. Without giving too much of his process away, Spinna challenged himself using the latest cutting edge software in tandem with some of his favorite gear from over the years. The end result is a glimpse into the spontaneous execution of top notch creativity. Listeners will have an unobstructed view into the ears and mind of the artist. Employing several different approaches, Unpicked Treats Volume 1 maintains a consistent vibe throughout it's 12 songs. Whether, you love beat tapes, instrumental music or are entertained by the art of sampling, this record is a commodity. Plans for volume 2 are already in progress, but in the meantime, be sure to get acquainted with Unpicked Treats Volume 1 and the genius of DJ Spinna.

Comprised of Vancouver producers and multi-instrumentalists Nick Wisdom and Astrological, Canadian duo Potatohead People boast a number of noteworthy accolades thanks to a their signature sound drawing influences from 90's boom-bap, future soul, classic jazz, deep house and boogie/funk. Beginning with a series of EP's, including their landmark "Kosmichemusik" EP, Potatohead People's productions quickly made their way to artists like Illa J who tapped the duo to produce his now critically acclaimed self-titled album, as well as producers like Kaytranada (who co-produced Illa J's "Strippers" with the pair). Supporters such as Soulection, Nightmares on Wax, Pomo, DJ Spinna, Big Boi, and Phife Dawg have also played formidable roles in championing the sound of Potatohead People worldwide.

Now with three years since their last release, 2015's critically acclaimed debut album Big Luxury, Potatohead People are back their long awaited new album Nick & Astro's Guide To The Galaxy (due out May 11th via Brooklyn label Bastard Jazz) The record picks up right where the pair left off, showcasing a leap forward in production chops, musicality, and songwriting. The first single "Quest For Love" "with it's neck snapping drum break, lush rhodes chords, cosmic synths, guitar & horn flourishes and unexpected musical changeups bring in the hip-hop infected musicality the duo has become so loved for, while Nick & Astro collaborate vocally on top. "Morning Sun" featuring Danish vocalist (and Anderson.Paak collaborator) Nanna.B is in part a melancholy piece with knocking drums, an infectious bassline and a soulful, shimmering hook, while "Do My Thing" featuring Canadian singer Kapok and Illa J is a neck-snapping Hip-Hop joint perfect for the dancefloor. "Liftin' Up" featuring San Francisco's K-Maxx ventures into West Coast boogie territories, while the album's closer "Rituals" goes for a deeper more atmospheric electronic vibe.

It was chance that brought about the release of One/Three, Dabrye's debut album. Early demos were tucked on the B side of a cassette Tadd Mullinix passed to Sam Valenti in 2000 while working at the Dubplate Pressure record shop in Ann Arbor. Mullinix had spent the late '90s producing jungle, techno, house, hip-hop and more using the All Sound Tracker software as a primary instrument. Each style pulled from a similar sound palette as Mullinix used limitations to define the contours of di-erent musical personalities. Dabrye was his hip-hop wildstyle, a captivating collage of sparse instrumentals inspired by the laid back vibes of midwestern hip-hop and east coast boom bap, the futuristic funk of Umma-era Jay Dee, and the calculated subtlety of Detroit dance music. Released in 2001 as the first in an intended trilogy, One/Three announced Dabrye's arrival with an unavoidable contribution to Detroit hip-hop. Ghostly International is reissuing the album in 2017 for the first time, including a long overdue vinyl edition.

On its release One/Three was the rare album that appealed to both fans of Slum Village's smooth yet rugged hip-hop and enthusiasts of the distinct American IDM released by labels like Schematic. Over the following decade, the inadvertent demo submission turned into a body of work that placed Dabrye alongside innovators such as Prefuse 73 amid the cannon of a new generation of producers. Today, One/Three remains a concise and intriguing study in instrumental hip-hop that helps join the dots between J Dilla and Flying Lotus.

One/Three is a record that says much with little. There are no obvious hip-hop tropes. Instead Mullinix captures the ingenious minimalism of '90s hip-hop instrumentals to build tracks both supple and hard, joyous and melancholy, full of sharply angled rhythms and warm rubbery basslines: 'The Lish' throws a sickly sweet saxophone against digitally fragmented melodies, 'How Many Times (with this)' draws you in with an irresistible, clipped guitar groove, the rhythmic stutter of 'Smoking The Edge' makes your head spin with pleasure. Playing with his inspirations, Mullinix injects omitted downbeats for imagined rhymes and repurposes the intricacy of ragga jungle for breakdowns.

But what really defines One/Three is the rhythmic sensibility and metric modulation of Detroit's school of hip-hop production, which Mullinix was a fervent student of. The beats feel like they're constantly escaping a rigid tempo grid even though they are, in fact, pretty tight. A lot of it is nuance,' Mullinix explains. I've been known to say that I'm not impressed by spectacle. I think that nuance is what really captivates people.'

When Ann Arbor's Tadd Mullinix began exploring hip-hop under the name Dabrye 20 years ago, he soon honed in on a startling vision of what the genre could be: ingenious, refined, daring. This vision came to life across two albums for Ghostly International — 2001's One/Three and its 2006 follow-up Two/Three— with each record further positioning the quiet Michigan producer as one of his generation's best, equally comfortable creating minimalist instrumental meditations or sharp rap salvos. In the late 2000s, following critical acclaim and accolades from both peers and inspirations (including the late Jay Dee with whom Mullinix collaborated before his untimely passing), Mullinix put the Dabrye moniker on ice and dedicated himself to other genres and ideas. All the while the influence of his work on a new generation of electronic musicians continued to make itself felt in subtle but meaningful ways.

All this changes in 2017 as Dabrye makes his long-awaited return with Three/Three, a razor-sharp rap album that brings to completion a prophetic trilogy. Mullinix's incisive productions provide the backdrop for equally acute rhymes that run the gamut from intergenerational observations and being your best self to back alley deals and having fun in the ride. Guests include indie rap legend DOOM, whose previous collaboration with Dabrye remains a point of reference for many, Wu Tang storyteller Ghostface Killah, L.A word fanatic Jonwayne, and Long Island's rugged surrealist Roc Marciano. Most importantly Three/Three is, much like its predecessor, an unfettered celebration of Detroit-area talent with Guilty Simpson, Phat Kat, Kadence, Quelle Chris, Danny Brown, Shigeto, Clear Soul Forces and more all lending their touch to Dabrye's return.

The blend of American and British dance music, hip-hop sampling, and Jamaican sound clash energy that underpinned Two/Three remains a quiet, guiding principle. At the same time Mullinix rejoices in a refreshed perspective, having had time to incubate ideas and find clarity in the distance between albums and the evolution of scenes.The beats are looser and less angular, more embracing of repetition. Organic techniques inspired by soul and jazz round off some of the harsher sonics. The resulting broad palette of tracks reflects both this evolution and the range of the Dabrye persona: relaxed headnod ("Tunnel Vision"), nervous, slow-motion electro ("The Appetite"), glacial motifs ("Emancipated"), jazzy, cut-up funk ("Sunset"), minimal brutalism ("Electrocutor"), intricate layering ("Culture Shuffle").

Three/Three marks the return of an innovator after close to a decade of silence. Despite what the title might imply, the album isn't the end of the story but rather the completion of a creative arc. Expect more Dabrye in the near future. The game is far from over.

The early 2000s were a time of upheaval for hip-hop. The underground and mainstream divide that had dened so much of the previous decade was showing the rst signs of irrelevance. Timbaland and The Neptunes made radio rappers sound futuristic while independent artists struggled in a quagmire of backpacks and misguided claims to keep it real. Away from this, in a misunderstood middle ground between hip-hop and electronic music, a new generation of artists were busy imagining a new sound for hip-hop.

One such artist was Scott Prefuse 73' Herren, whose perpendicular MPC chops on his 2001 debut for Warp Records set curious minds racing with possibilities. That same year Tadd Mullinix released his debut as Dabrye on Ghostly International, a sonic wildstyle that appealed to both hip-hop heads and IDM nerds. Sometime that same year Herren and Mullinix met after sharing a bill in Detroit. CD-Rs were exchanged and a year later Eastern Development, Herren's newly launched label, released Dabrye's Instrmntl, a short album with a big impact. On its fteenth anniversary Ghostly International is reissuing Instrmtl on vinyl and making it available digitally for the rst time.

Instrmntl is a continuation of the beat experiments Dabrye began with One/Three and a bridge to the diverse textures that would dene Two/Three four years later. About half of its nine tracks (ten if you lived in Japan) were created at the same time as One/Three while the rest were newer or made specically for the album. Once again Mullinix looked outside of hip-hop to techno, house, and drum & bass for stylistic and technical ideas while embracing the blissful minimalism of a good hip-hop instrumental and the rhythmic nuance of Detroit.

Despite the similarities between Dabrye's debut and this follow up, Mullinix didn't simply replicate what had made One/Three so arresting. He pushed and pulled further between the two cornerstones of his approach to reveal more potentials. Instrmntl takes you deeper into electronic depths — the rugged synth stutter of 'Won', the tumbling, wobbling bass in 'No Child Of God', the electro get down of 'Prospects (Marshall Law)' — while also treading more organic grounds by letting samples breathe and moods unfurl at a gentler pace ('Take Me Home', 'Evelyn', and 'You Know The Formula Right'). And then there are the moments where this push and pull nds balance and the result becomes more, as it does on the mournful march of 'D-Town Tabernacle Choir' and the twinkling daydream of 'This Is Where I Came In'.

At just over 30 minutes, Instrmntl offers a snapshot of a time when potentials seemed innite, when lines could be drawn between jazz, ragga jungle, techno, and hip-hop and the resulting shape divined an exciting future.

FRANK is the latest release from Dolfin Records, a Texas indie label with a prominent underground roster that includes rapper Lord Byron, producer Ben Hixon, R&B singer Jon Bap, and former Stanley Clarke drummer Mike Mitchell. Liv.e is one of the newer artists on the label, having previously collaborated with Hixon through a series of DJ parties in Dallas ( New Math Mondays'). Hixon and Bap have significant marks on this project, providing production, mixing, and background vocals. The beats they lend are often heavy on the drums, with short, hazy riffs that resemble Dilla-style syncopated loops. FRANK opens with a short hiss, launching into a jittery pattern of cymbals and drums, stinging bass slaps, and bouncy guitar riffs. You can almost see the tape reels rolling in front of you as the instrumental loops play themselves out with occasional flutters and skips. A chorus of voices enter with harmonies out of the George Clinton songbook, blending in behind the slow, finger-snapping beat. Magic in Threes release their second release on KingUnderground with a double sided funk 45 inspired by 70s soundtracks.

The band Magic in Threes, consisting of 3 members are from Nashville, Tennessee. On Friday 9th February 2018 we are releasing two songs of theirs that sound like they could be on an old KPM library record or a 1970's soundtrack. The band have a full length in the making coming out on KingUndeground in the near future.

In 2016, the band were writing and recording a new track every week. They spent so much time in the studio that year that the song ideas just kept coming, one after another. They have always been rooted in library music and over the years they've dug deeper and deeper into that sphere of inspiration. "Finnish Funk" and "Shot Thru The Grease" are both loving homages to that genre. Heavy beats with diabolical melodies are the name of the game for The A-side, "Finnish Funk". On the flip side "Shot Thru The Grease" has more of a loping feel to it with ample portions of moody thematic elements. Like a score to a lost 1970s Italian action film, these tracks hit like a hard nosed detective closing in on his next collar.

The Tel Aviv based music label 'Raw Tapes Records' has been getting a lot of attention in the last few years, broasdcasted around the world (Gilles Peterson/BBC, The Gaslamp Killer, Toshio Matsuraa/Tokyo Moon FM, Dom Servini/Wah Wah 45 London, Peanut Butter Wolf/Stones Throw LA, Radio Nova/France, Wicked Jazz Sounds/Amsterdam, KCRW/LA, Andrew Jervis/Bandcamp).

With more than 70 albums released out of around 20 local artists within an 10-years work, this is no doubt the most productive independant music label in the history of Israel, and surely Tel Aviv's leading Beats/Hip Hop label and collective.

Puzzles vol.3 is the third volume in the Puzzles Compilations Series from Raw Tapes, featuring 13 of the current artists on the label, including Buttering Trio, Sol Monk & Nitai Hershkovits. The release features cooperations with MNDSGN, vocalist Jenny Penkin, Uzi Ramirez and more.

Originally released through the Beastie Boys' French fan club, The In Sound From Way Out! is a collection of the group's funky instrumentals from Check Your Head and Ill Communication, with a couple of new tracks thrown in. The Beasties have a flair for loose, gritty funk and soul-jazz, and the stuttering, greasy keyboards of Money Mark give the music an extra edge -- he helps make the music sound as authentic as anything from the early '70s. Few artforms are as apt to describing the fervour and tumult of human emotions as music is. Songs transport us to real and imaginary places, living someone else's experiences as our own, connecting with thoughts and feelings through melodies, rhythm and words. As a producer working primarily with the tools of traditional Hip-Hop - samplers, records, synthesizers - Onra has distinguished himself over the past decade as one of the best of his generation, capable of creating vivid music that sparks the mind of the listener and brings them along to uniquely detailed spaces, both real and imagined. On Nobody Has To Know', his fifth album for All City Records, the versatile French producer created music that reflects on the various aspects of a secret relationship pulling from R&B,New Jack Swing and Funk to soundtrack the passions of attraction. Stylistically Nobody Has To Know' picks up from the Future Funk style Onra originated on his 2010's Long Distance' (and its 2012 companion EP Deep In The Night' for Fool's Gold). Where those two releases mined the early and mid parts of the 1980s for ideas and references, the new album digs into late '80s and early '90s jams for smoother and richer sounds. Last year I linked up with Redbull France. They brought me out to Paris for a week, paid for my records, and let me craft beats in their studio (I ended up moving the equipment to my hotel room due to smoking restrictions). The idea was to use strictly French samples, then hook me up with a bunch of dope new young artists from France and Brussels to make songs out of the beats. The nal piece to the project was a sold out show in France where I presented each artist and they performed both the songs we did and their own hit songs. The project came out dope, I linked up with some really talented artists, and ended up making more than enough joints. This is the instrumental version of the project. Only 1000 pieces made. Led by Saxophonist Rob Mitchell, Abstract Orchestra have been a consistent presence on the u.k. music scene, touring constantly in the promotion of their debut LP "Dilla" and steadily building a loyal and supportive fanbase.Inspired by the legendary live performances of The Roots with Jay-Z and the 40 piece orchestral arrangements by Miguel-Atwood Ferguson of the work of J Dilla, classic arranging techniques underpin modern loop-based structures, breathing new life into familiar material.The band itself is based on the classic jazz big band instrumentation of saxes, trumpets, and trombones and features the cream of the north of England's jazz scene, who collectively have played with Jamiroquai, Corinne Bailey Rae, Mark Ronson, Martha Reeves, John Legend & the Roots, Roots Manuva and Amy Winehouse.

"New Day" is the eagerly anticipated new single and features rapper and J Dilla's brother Illa J on vocals. Supported by a U.K. tour with Illa J throughout February, "New Day" takes the blueprint laid out on last years LP "Dilla" and expands it with Illa J's understated vocal delivery. Radio support anticipated from BBC6's Gilles Peterson who has been an advocate for Abstract Orchestra on both his BBC6 and Worldwide FM shows, as well as Huey Morgan (BBC6), Shawn Lee (Soho) and Dom Servini (Wah Wah 45s). "New day" is the first original work by Abstract Orchestra and builds on the foundations laid on their debut. Flutes and electric piano lay out a gentle pad, propelled forward by Joost Hendrickx's insistent drums. Occasional fragments of saxophones add an urgency to the insouciant groove laid out by the rhythm section as soft trumpets and trombones are gradually added to the flutes. This provides the perfect foil to Illa J's laid-back vocal delivery as he describes a typically relaxed Tuesday morning spent contemplating the day ahead. The B-side is the AO remix which takes the instrumental performances of the A-Side, chopping and fragmenting them and re-framing the original with a slightly harder edge, which should be popular with those DJs and listeners looking for something with a tougher sound.

SNIPS delivers the first vinyl release on Houseology. The Barbershop LP is a tongue in cheek play on the production techniques Todd Worsnip aka Snips normally uses when making his Hip-Hop work. This 8 track LP is meeting of the two worlds of House and Hip-Hop tapping into Snips' raw ability to find the best cuts and chops needed for any genre.

DJ Snips began his career at legendary London record store Deal Real', where he ran the open mic night alongside British host and comedian Doc Brown, Snips' years at Deal Real saw him DJ'ing alongside performances from several US heavy hitters including Kanye West, Mos Def and the Black Eyed Peas.

Snips' knack for manoeuvring through a wide range of Hip Hop oeuvres has seen him play around the world, Specifically in NYC where he has been a guest at legendary parties including Everyday People, Bible Study, Mobile Mondays and Ginny's Supper Club. As well as being a regular in NY, Snips has also headlined events in The Philippines, Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, The Netherlands, Qatar, France, Norway and Spain. When Snips isn't touring or on the Club circuit, he's known for churning out beats for some of the most talented MCs on both sides of the Atlantic. His production work includes tracks for several major US recording artists including M1 (Dead Prez), Capadonna (Wu Tang), Sean Price.

Work on the Houseology record label allows Snips the opportunity to articulate himself even more so within his skilled production, by drawing a definitive line between the House/Hip-Hop relationship which has existed for years.

The last track, What Can I Do,' features co-production with Jonwayne.Samiyam grew up Sam Baker in Michigan. He was among a network of post-Donuts producers focusing on instrumental hip-hop beat as the finished work, who found themselves migrating west and huddling in the scene around Low End Theory in east Los Angeles. So this is how the story goes..a long long time ago in a galaxy far away, that is to say pre internet, 1995 or 1996 to be as exact as we can, all city co founder Splyce found himself on one of his regular record buying sojourns to NY. Approached outside Fat Beats by two guys, who had heard he was a DJ from out of town who were eager to spread word of their production work outside their homeland, they gave him a mix tape / demo of their beats. Named The Midnight Eez, from the Bronx, they were one of thousands of budding production units on Manhattan Island. The tape came only with a name and pager number and after finding the tape when moving house recently beeper number goes unanswered - we decided to put it out as it deserves to be heard. Hopefully this release will see them get some belated but deserved shine!

Baker's Dozen ventures to Japan to welcome our next featured producer, Budamunk. I started listening to Hip Hop in the 90's. My interest grew slowly until it became a collection of records, CDs and taped VHS. This then evolved into experiments, sampling and chopping WAVs on free versions of WaveLab. In 2003 this became an MPC 2000XL. I was living in Los Angeles at the time so I had started going to shows and hanging out with people who shared similar interests. We all began to gather and learn together. Records became beats which became freestyle sessions, songs, laughter and much coughing. After several years I returned to Tokyo and it's been 10 years since I have been back. I still make beats the same way. Going off of feeling I would get when I hear a record. The selection of sounds has changed slightly in accordance with my current environment. Still mostly sample-based but adding new and old tools have become part of my process. Just continuing to create music my body and spirit needs to feel good.'

'A Part Of Me' is the debut album by Ivan Arlaud alias 1954, a young musician from Lyon, France. It's an immersive journey between nostalgic and synthetic sounds, melancholia and hope, fears and confidence. He contrived to describe all the bright, warm, cold and dark moments of his restless imagination in rhythms without being intrusive. As the title says, it's his personal disclosure.

Slowly And Surely Greatest Heats is what u get when ever you thought what could happened with the instrumental parts of the 90's rap. This is also the way to fill the subjectively perceptible gap in the current beat music tendencies. SASGH is a kind of vision of the future of the past in the context of the present, related to Frank Ohara's poetry. Metaphorically, this is a B grade, sci-fi movie from the late 20th century, dealing with the everyday (favorite rapper's theme before they moved out of the blocks). The eclectic character of the beat tape is not only the selection of samples, but also the attempt to devote attention to a wide spectrum of sensations and situations. Appeal to Black culture is intertwined with the storytelling of the necessary minimum to revive the imagination and to create visual tales. The title is a celebration of constant expectation, which by its active form is not so pleasant as necessary to maintain a balance of life, but also highlights the compilation character of the mini album.

Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde is, simply put, one of the most perfect albums in the history of recorded music regardless of genre. From the lyrical flow of Slimkid3, Bootie Brown, Imani and Fatlip to the cover art by Fuct the project is the embodiment of excellence start to finish. Musically, the foundation of this perfection is the production work of J-Swift. His use of jazz samples, phat beats and live instrumentation had the ultimate effect of creating their own sonic utopia', as NME put it. As such it's more than fitting that Pharcyde's Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde be released as an all instrumental outing. Swift's adventurous use of samples from jazz, R&B, funk, classic rock and more melded with his personal additions of live instrumentation including piano, bass, and Fender Rhodes along with drum arrangements from fellow producer JMD create a lush, jazzy soundscape that works well as a stand alone recording. Though the west coast's predominant G-Funk sound of the time or the east coast's conscious kings De La Soul may have sold more records at the time, The Pharcyde and J-Swift's work on Bizarre Ride has stood the text of time and continues to resonate with fans new and old in a way that few records have or ever will.

Proud winner of numerous beat battles, featured on Adobe website and a collaboration with Samsung x HYPEBEAST Myke has partnered up with world renowned illustrator Daniel Isles (Dirty Robot) to bring the audio/visual project 'Lessons' to life

Myke showcases his silky production skills displayed on the recent remix with prolific DJ/Producer Chris Read and Chicago MC Pugs Atomz released on UK Record Label BBE earlier this year. From tracks like "The Lightbulb" to "Fallen Star" Myke creates glistening, synth-driven electric-soul with each melody on this 9 track EP.

Lessons started out as a reminder that no matter what life throws at you, good or bad there is a lesson to be learnt. Myke has captured that from the titles of the tracks to the dynamic soundscapes featured on this contemporary and imaginative piece of work.

On his long-awaited second full-length solo album Die Cut, the trailblazing DJ and producer underwent a creative birth reflected in its 17 tracks. The artist augments his signature approach famously earmarked by impeccable sample selection, searing scratching, and big-screen worthy arrangements with the inclusion of A-list musicians, songwriter structure,' and a whole lot of team spirit including Los Angeles producer, curator and purveyor of culture, Carlos Nino. Cut Chemist called his longtime friend to act as associate producer and production coordinator. He holed up in Comp-ny Studios four blocks from home and invited a revolving door of high-profile musicians to contribute such as drum superstar Deantoni Parks (The Mars Volta), rap legend Biz Markie, actress Erika Christensen, tune-yards, Farmer Dave Scher, Dexter Story, and more. They comprised his studio band'. Between his high-profile reunion with his rap group Jurassic 5 at Coachella 2013, he dedicated nearly two years to arranging crazy amounts of cutting room material' before starting the mixing process during 2014 with Benjamin Tierney (Kamasi Washington, The Gaslamp Killer Experience) and Andy Kravitz (Billy Joel, The Fugees, Cypress Hill, Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince). Operating out of The Exchange in London, Mike Marsh completed mastering in 2017 as the final product brought a comprehensive and airtight vision to life. Die Cut features a variety of artists including Biz Markie, Chali 2Na, Hymnal, Dean, Mr. Lif, Deantoni Parks, Laura Darlington and more.

Wah Wah 45s are very proud to announce their first foray into the format of the future-retro fan - the cassette. And who better to deliver our debut release on this cult medium, than our very own electronic beat makers and hip hop nerds, Paper Tiger. Over the last four years, the Leeds and London based crew have been quietly pasting together some of the more interesting and subversive off-cuts and live interludes that were recorded around their two LP releases.

In 2013 Paper Tiger released their long awaited debut album Laptop Suntan on Wah Wah 45s. After a collection of head-turning EPs, featuring collaborations with leftfield electronic and hip-hop artists including Foreign Beggars, Homeboy Sandman, Joshua Idehen, Archie Pelago and more, the time for their full-length project finally arrived. In order to whet the listener's appetite for this stunning debut long-player, Wah Wah 45s shared the first instalment of Sonic Boom Head Zoom, a glimpse of the full Paper Tiger live band in action. With hints of what you would experience on the record, plus exclusive bonus material, this twenty-minute live digital beat tape was by turns hypnotically head-nodding, experimental and downright hilarious (shout out to all Emmerdale lovers).

In the words of the band's electronics expert and woodwind player Greg Surmacz: "As we were completing our album, we came up with the idea of recording some live interludes - our live band set-up and instrumental recording/sampling are a big part of what we do and we wanted to give a proper nod to that on the record.

We set up in a studio without much of a plan and ended up recording a few hours of jamming - all live, all completely improvised on the fly. There was an abundance of material, some of which we will sample and develop into fully-fledged tunes, but we thought it'd be nice to compile a short mix-tape of some of the highlights. You can also hear the album's interludes in their original context."

In the autumn of 2013, the band went on to release a remix record, Sultan Ant Pop. As well as receiving contributions from some of their favourite producers (LV, Werkha, Murder He Wrote, Bambooman and more), they decided to record more brand new music to mould it into a coherent listening experience.

As a result, Sonic Boom Head Zoom 2 was born. Clocking in at over 30 minutes, it was a deeper, darker and weirder affair than its predecessor despite being produced in the same way - 100% live, totally improvised and recorded in a single day. There were head-nodding grooves, bizarre and hilarious rhymes from MC Raphael Attar, space-jazz excursions and much more.

After a short hiatus, in 2015 Paper Tiger began work on their second album, Blast Off. Having grown in confidence and stature as a live band, they were keen to fully integrate their live sound into the new record. They spent a day at their regular spot in Leeds, ATA Studios, and recorded over five hours' worth of ideas, sketches and improvisation.

They ended up with an abundance of material, some of which was incorporated into the sound of Blast Off. However, there was still plenty of music left over to compile a new entry in their live mix-tape series. Clocking in at around 30 minutes, Sonic Boom Head Zoom 3 retains the SBHZ premise - 100% live, totally improvised and recorded in a single day - but is more adventurous and diverse than ever. There's everything from Krautrock to neo-soul in there, non-sequiturs aplenty from MC Raphael Attar and the usual leftfield beat music.

In late 2015 Paper Tiger went back into the studio in order to capitalise on the creative momentum from the Blast Off project. As with previous sessions at their regular home of ATA Studios, there was a wealth of material generated from a single day of recording. Much of this provided the starting point for what will become their third album, due for release in 2018, but in anticipation of that they gave us Sonic Boom Head Zoom 4.

Like previous volumes, SBHZ4 is a beat tape made up of live jams, totally improvised and recorded in a single day. This latest set is stuffed full of head-nodding, off-kilter rap beats full of natural swing and groove that you only get with the tightest rhythm sections, pushed into left-field with squiggly synths, curveball sample choices and stoopid-smart similes from MC Raphael Attar. While more focused than the last edition, it's still not averse to the odd jazz freak-out. Just don't mention Whiplash...

The Sonic Boom Head Zoom double-cassette brings all four mix-tapes together on in one place for the first time and is released in limited numbers on November 10th 2017.

Sunstrumental is a double single of two neck breakin', raw, dirty, MPC cuts. It's a nod to the boom-bap school but at the same time also breaks that dogma with fresh current details. Instrumentals that many MCs would love to jump on but it's even better they didn't.

Sunstrumental is the first solo vinyl release by Sunnysun, but expect this to be just the beginning of what is to yet to come. Sunny is an all-round player: established as an MC (Croatian Freestyle Vice-Champion), he lately shifted his focus more on studio work and DJing. He created the first mixtape of exclusively Slovenian rap music Selotejp, his beats underline the lyrics of numerous MCs and appear on compilations like Stiropor, Ctrl N and BTF x rx:tx. All in all, an unorthodox whiz never afraid of gazing into different directions, never limiting himself to just one side of hip hop. Truly one of the key players, linking the various Clans, Posses, Crews and Cliks.
